As an example of my new time-saving regime, I recently discovered EMS – a newish 20 minute workout that means you don’t have to spend hours in the gym. Talk about the ultimate life hack (at least for a while – I loved EMS, but it too has since fallen by the wayside). Another favourite shortcut in our home is those dinner kit boxes that are so popular right now. They’re fresh, local, healthy, exciting for the kids to help cook and, best of all, there’s no shopping and no food wastage. Pretty convenient, huh? It was over a Mexican fiesta dinner one evening that one of the fellow mums at

You don’t simply grow out of dyslexia and dysgraphia
Am I the only one looking for life’s little shortcuts? here’s no doubt that time and energy are the most precious, limited commodity we have. These days, where busy-ness is speed of everyday life, I’m all for streamlining the less important things so I can focus on the things that matter most (raising good kids, nurturing my marriage and squeezing in a bit of selfcare). We’re not talking reckless corner cutting here, merely simplifying what I can.

Brownes Dairy came up with the idea of putting our yoghurt in a handy ‘top down’ bottle. She wanted to add a neat line of Greek yoghurt to her burritos but there was no easy, quick and clean way of doing it – and so Brownes Dairy Top Down Yoghurt was born! We shared the idea with our friends and family and when they said how delighted they were with this invention, we knew we were onto something. ‘Handy for camping,’ one of them said. ‘Great for cooking,’ said another. ‘Now the kids can help themselves,’ someone added. So work began to make it happen! And the result is our new fast, fun and convenient Brownes Dairy Top Down Yoghurt in Greek Style and Vanilla Bean & Strawberry (great to squirt onto some granola or fruit!). Available in Coles and IGA from 10 September and Woolies from 15 October. Don’t forget to let us know how you use yours by tagging @brownesdairy in all your pictures on social media!

veryday I meet parents who want to know why their child is struggling at school. It’s heartbreaking to see children trying so hard but despite their best efforts, not progressing. A common misconception is that children will grow out of it. But if the child has a learning difficulty, such as dyslexia or dysgraphia, this will not be the case. Unfortunately, in most cases, it not something that the class teacher is equipped to deal with, as most teachers are not taught how to identify and support a child with learning difficulties. As a parent myself, I encourage you to seek advice from a specialist earlier, rather than later, to reduce the gap in learning and lessen the impact it has on their education. Impact Education supports children with their holistic approach, focusing on the social, emotional, physical and cognitive aspects to learning. Our fully-
qualified specialist teachers are unique, undergoing training in multi-sensory, brainbased methods (auditory, visual and kinaesthetic strategies) that help children make meaningful connections to enhance their learning. If your child avoids reading, has difficulties with reading fluency, skips words or struggles with their spelling and writing, this might be a sign of an underlying learning difficulty. If you feel that your child is falling behind at school, I invite you to request a free 15 minute phone consult with a learning specialist, via the website. For more information, contact Impact Education on 9450 3870 or visit impact-education.com.au

Winter sports are over and it’s time for Martial Arts
Parents encouraged to take ‘we time’
M
ore than 40 Goodstart Early Learning Centres in Western Australia took part in a ‘Date Night’ on August 24 and 25, to encourage parents to take some time out together.
I
mproved co-ordination, confidence and flexibility are essential for child's development – especially in the offseason, when your child’s winter sports are over.
Goodstart introduced this initiative after listening to parents who felt they had lost their ‘we time’ after having children. The idea is for parents to spend a couple of hours together to focus on maintaining a strong relationship.
Through their Little Dragon and Taekwondo programs, many parents are seeing positive results in their child’s physical and emotional development. Just take a look at their student Christina Ruggiero (pictured above) if you want to see where proper training can lead you! ATI training boosts children’s confidence and gives them the tools to protect themselves if required. The amazing, caring instructors will work with you, the parent, to educate your children. Find out why Martial Arts are so popular. Call for their discounted trial program, including uniform, and family discounts.
Goodstart Kingsley Centre Director, Danika Dixon, said parents often didn’t have time to do anything but work and look after their children. ‘Our Date Nights will give couples the chance to spend quality time together and enjoy a night out or even just to get their groceries done,’ she said. Joondalup (9301 0277), Malaga (9248 7811), Claremont (9385 0577) Midvale (9274 1896) and Yanchep (9301 0277 ). Or visit atimartialarts.com.au for 17 other ATI schools.
If you would like to be part of the Goodstart family and take part in initiatives such as Date Night, visit goodstart.org.au to find your nearest centre.
Transporting children safely
I
n Western Australia, transport related injury is the leading cause of death for children aged 0 to 14 years. Whenever children are passengers in a vehicle they should be seated in the most appropriate child car restraint for their age and size. A correctly fitted and correctly used child car restraint can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death in road crashes. All child car restraints sold and used in Australia must meet the strict requirements of AS/NZS:1754. Restraints purchased in other countries do not meet the Australian Standard, and it is illegal to use them in Australia. Ensure the restraint is no older than 10 years from the date of manufacture and has never been involved in a car accident. By law, all children must be seated in a correctly fitted child car restraint when travelling in a motor vehicle. While the law sets the guidelines by age, it’s important to keep your child in the correct stage until they have reached the maximum size for that restraint.
Birth to at least 6 months: • Must use an approved rearward-facing child car restraint with a built-in five point harness. It is much safer for children to stay rearward facing for as long as possible. At least 6 months to 4 years: • Can use either a rearward-facing or forward-facing child car restraint with a built-in five point harness. At least 4 to 7 years: • Can use either a forward-facing child car restraint with a built-in five point harness or a booster seat with an adult seatbelt. Over 7 years: • If your child still fits in a child car restraint or booster seat, continue to use it until they outgrow it. Your dancer will discover the joy of movement while exploring the delicate balance between the technique and artistry of classical ballet‌ love in motion
ots of things can be recycled but our yellow lid recycling bin service is designed to only take certain items for recycling – paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans and plastic bottles and containers. Other items not named here risk being regarded as contaminants and sent to landfill. Also these items need to be larger than the palm of your hand. Smaller items, like bottle tops or shredded paper, fall off conveyors and end up in landfill. Recyclable items should also be clean, not spotless though, as food or other material acts as a contaminant and may result in the whole item being rejected and landfilled. If unsure, check with your local council.

Montessori gets nod from elite universities
The language of maths By Dr Jack Bana, Maths Association of Western Australia
By Dr Maree Matthews, Principal of Blue Gum Montessori
A
t Blue Gum Montessori School (BGMS), we celebrate the learning of all children. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn and reach their full potential. BGMS educates children up to Grade 6, following the National Australian curriculum approved by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Our students often start off in our Infant Toddler Community programs, which help them transition into Pre-Kindergarten and eventually more formal schooling. The school also accepts children throughout their Primary years of schooling.
Montessori education has been recognised by Harvard University as an educational system that develops the executive functioning skills essential for adult life. This year, the school was one of 100 schools worldwide, recognised for its innovation by Cambridge University, UK. There are plenty of mathematical terms in the language that we use everyday – less, equal, greater, heavier, shorter, difference, add, second, square, measure, distance, metre, even, times, fraction and litre. These terms, and many more, are important for understanding maths. Parents can do so much for their children’s learning by asking questions using maths terms when the relevant situation arises. How many metres is it to the letterbox? Which bottle has less water? Will we need an even number of forks to set the table? Try to use the language of maths at home when playing games, cooking and other household activities – and watch your
children’s mathematical comprehension grow. For more mathematical inspiration visit mawainc.org.au

THURSDAY 13 TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES When the Teen Titans go to the big screen, they go big! “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in their first feature film extravaganza—a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers. It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies—everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!
Join presenters Teo and Abi as they open the pages on the ‘Once Upon a Time’ book to rediscover all your favourite nursery rhymes and stories. The presenters will be joined on stage by everyone’s favourite toys! This 45 minute fully interactive show will have your little ones up jumping and dancing for joy. Q & A with Justine Clarke Before she arrives in Perth with her Justine Clarke Silly Songs Tour 2018, we asked the star of the show a few questions about sing-alongs, her creative process and life as a children’s entertainer and mother. What’s your favourite song to sing with your children? My kids and I all love singing along to Khalid’s album. My kids are all older now and have their own tastes but we recently all travelled to Splendour in The Grass and sang along to Khalid all the way!
What does a day in your life look like? Lunches, ironing, homework, reading and yelling “teeth, socks, shoes, bag!” a lot. Taking the dog for a walk, running, admin, practice, writing, wasting time on social media!
What is your creative process for creating new material? I like to remind myself of the wonder of being a child. Remembering that everything is new and interesting and reminding myself that kids are capable and curious creatures who know a good song or story when they hear one!
Are you working on any new musical projects? I have a few projects I’m working on at the moment. They are still in early stages but very exciting!
Where would we find you on your day off? At a footy field or a netball court watching my kids play.
What’s your #1 parenting-hack?
What are your fans like? They are three or four years old and they are lovely, kind and very surprised to see me.
What made you want to be a children’s entertainer? I didn’t know I would be one! I just enjoy making music and I love making music the whole family can enjoy together.
