International Friendship Day!
Friend’s Day is celebrated in almost 100 countries on July 30. It is the perfect excuse to celebrate with the people we love the most.
W
hat would life be like without friends? It would definitely not be as much fun; we would have nobody to laugh as much with! So many hours spent at school, doing
homework and playing or practicing sports make us virtually live together with our friends, which turns them into our soul siblings. On July 20, 1969, the Argentine Enrique Ernesto Febbraro had a great idea. While he was watching on TV how men
LET’S PLAY: SECRET PALS! ORGANIZE NA AULA ESTA BRINCADEIRA TÃO DIVERTIDA. COMO É? MUITO SIMPLES: You must be the “secret pal” of someone in your class, and leave clues to be discovered. Mystery, mystery! Everyone puts their names into a box or bag. Then, there is a raffle in which each friend gets a piece of paper. The person whose name is written on the piece of paper you get will be your secret pal. From that moment on, you will have to send that person letters, gifts and anything you can think of to give him/her clues about your identity. At the same time, another person will get your name and you will have to find out who that person is.
landed on the Moon, he realized that for once, the entire world was united, so he sent 1,000 letters to one hundred countries, and he received 700 replies. From that moment onwards, Friend’s Day was founded. General Assembly of the United Nations decided to desig-
nate 30 July as the International Day of Friendship. This is an excellent opportunity to let our friends know how much we care about them. You can invite your friends round, play a PlayStation game or organize a pajama party to celebrate such a special day.

The balls will be the planets. Paint each in a different color bearing in mind the sizes. You can also use modeling clay to achieve the desired size and color!
Mercury: Brown. Small ball.
Earth: Venus: Blue and green. Dark yellow. Medium-sized ball. Medium-sized ball.
•Saturn: Light brown with white dots. Big ball.
Neptune: Blue. Medium-sized ball.
Jupiter: Mars: Orange, red and white Red. stripes. Big ball. Medium-sized ball.

SOCIAL SCIENCES
3d special
The French legacy:
Liberty, equality, and fraternity!
On July 14, 1789, the French took to the streets to fight for their rights. Learn more about the revolution that changed the world!
T
oday we live in democracy: we enjoy civil rights, can choose our representatives and there are public hospitals and schools... But this wasn’t always the case. A long time ago, almost all European countries had a monarchy, a type of government in which power was concentrated in the hands of the King. France was governed by a very young king, Louis XVI, who lived surrounded by luxury and eccentricities. Social conditions were unequal. Rich people and nobles owned land and great riches, while common people worked very long hours, earned low wages and paid high taxes. All the funds raised were for the nobility! This meant that not all men were equal before the law. The French decided that it was time to change the situation, and they created a national assembly to write a constitution by which all citizens could have the same rights. On July 14, 1789, peasants and merchants from Paris marched bravely to the Bastille, one of the king’s castles— used as a prison where all those opposing the King’s decisions were sent to—to free the prisoners. The assault on the Bastille became the symbol of the Revolution.
Did you know that... … when Louis XVI got married to Marie-Antoinette they were only 15 and 14 years old, respectively? … in the summer of 1788, bread reached a price equivalent to one-month salary? The cause: short supply of wheat and bread. … it is said that the Queen Marie-Antoinette, after being informed of the situation, said “if they do not have bread, let them eat cake” Historians believe that this famous quote is false. What a myth
The National Assembly assumed power and established the Rights of Men and of the Citizen, whose motto was “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité,” which in English means “freedom, equality, and brotherhood” among men. Peasants were given lands to sow and political parties were founded for people to elect their representatives. Finally, all men were equal before the law! The Republic was born in France and a new era began for the Western world.

Mafalda’s World
This year is the 50th anniversary of this famous comic strip first publication; to celebrate it, we invite you to learn more about this fun character and about the life of Quino, its author.
J
oaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, known as Quino, was born in Mendoza, on July 17, 1932. As his uncle was named like him, he was called Quino as from his birth, to differentiate them both. At 13, he graduated in Fine Arts, but decided to be a comic and humor strip drafter.
His first work was published in 1954. From then onwards, he published his comic strips in newspapers and magazines around the world. His first book was published in 1963. After that, he was hired by an advertising agency to create a story to promote a brand of home appliances. The campaign was never published, but Mafalda was born in that story!
What I like the most is ... asking questions!
Hi, I’m Mafalda, and I hate soup!
My friends are Felipe, Susanita, Manolito, Miguelito, Libertad, and my brother Guille.
The first comic strip about me was published in the weekly publication Primera Plana in 1964. A year later, it started being published in the newspaper El Mundo.
I became famous! First in South America and later on in Europe.
The last time Quino published one of my comic strips was years ago.

Can I have your autograph?
But I’ll tell you a secret: My comic strip is the best-selling in the history of Latin America!
In Buenos Aires, there is a square named after me, and I have even been made a sculpture!

Troy is burning!
1
The city of Troy was governed by King Priam, who had two sons: Paris and Hector. Paris traveled to Sparta and met the most beautiful woman in Greece: Helen, whose beauty overwhelmed him. Even though she was King Menelaus’ wife, Paris decided to take her with him.
2
When King Menelaus discovered it, he summoned all the kings of Greece to declare war. They set sail to Troy and laid siege to the city. The fight was so even that they spent 9 years fighting without a winner.
3
When they were considering going back home, Ulysses, one of the great Greek kings, came up with a bright idea:
to build an enormous wooden horse and hide soldiers in there!

Some soldiers boarded the ships, and others pretended to go back to Greece, but they only went to a nearby island instead. The Trojans let the horse in thinking it was an offering to the gods. Due to its great size, they had to break part of the wall to let it in.
5
To celebrate the end of the war, the Trojans threw a huge party. Afterwards, when everybody was sleeping, enemy soldiers came out of the horse and opened the gates of the city to let those that had left to the island in. The Trojans were incapable of defending themselves and the Greek burnt the city and destroyed it forever.

Create a Stop Motion movie!
If you like animated movies and are patient enough, do not miss this article: we’ll teach you how to create your own animation! Let’s do it!
T
he idea: In the first place, you need to think the story you would like to tell. Afterwards, imagine who the characters will be, what will happen to them during the story and how it will end. As this is your first try, we suggest thinking a very short story. The storyboard: Once you have planned how your movie will be, move on to paper to design what is known as the storyboard: a sequence of drawings illustrating each part of the movie. If you are going to make a dog jump, you’ll have to draw the dog in motion; the same goes for each character. Bear in mind that you will have to create each movement drawn on the storyboard. Try to keep it simple! Characters and setting: In order to give life to the characters, you can use cardboard models, plastic dolls, or create your own characters using colored clay. As we do not have much experience yet, we advise you to model simple characters. Where will your story take place? Are you in a house, in the garden, at school? That’s up to you! We suggest recreating this location you have in mind by printing a background you like from your computer.
Be careful! For the character to jump, you might need to take 15 pictures, or if you want it to walk to the door, about 12 pictures. All you need is to be patient and very accurate with the movements; they must be slow and gradual.
What is Stop Motion? It is a powerful animation technique that makes static objects appear to be in motion. To give life to an object, you have to take a picture of each of its movements, and then group all the pictures into a sequence. The main types of Stop Motion are: clay animation and the animation with rigid bodies.

Lights, camera… action!
We very often watch movies but never wonder how the film industry works. This is your chance to become an expert in the seventh art! When we look at the movie screen we can see movements, but… Did you know that movies consist in sets of pictures printed on a film following each other in close succession? The human eye retains images a fraction of a second after having seeing them. Doesn’t it sound like magic?
It’s already been over 100 years since the first filmed movie, and what we still do not know is how movies will be in the future... but they have certainly evolved tremendously. Get to know the innovations that made it possible!
Sound film (1926)
Warner Brothers created the vitaphone, the first device that recorded sound and soundtracks for films. Movies stopped being silent!
Silent film (1900)
Movies had no sound. On many occasions, someone played the piano live.
Black and white (1896)
George Méliès came up with the idea that movies, in addition to reflecting reality, could invent stories. That’s how science-fiction movies were born!
The cinematograph (1895)
The Lumière brothers, Louis and Auguste, invented the cinematograph. They were pioneers in the film industry and filmed several documentaries. The first movie was called “Arrival of a Train at a Station.” The audience was impressed!
First studio (1891)
Thomas Alva Edison built the first film studio in the world, the ‘Black Maria’, to carry out experiments on images in motion. His assistant built what some people regard today as the first film maker, the kinetoscope.

…the two Latin American countries that have a film industry with the richest tradition are Mexico and Argentina?
The movietone (1931)
The movietone would record sound on the film.
Color arrives (1932)
Color arrives to movies, although the camera recorded in only three tones. The first color movie was: “Vanity Fair”.
3D Film (1934)
3D film arrives! The Metro Goldwyn Mayer featured some shorts filmed in 3D which were very successful.
Special Effects (1977)
The Star Wars saga was one of the first productions leaving the audience amazed by their extraordinary special effects.
IMAX and 4D (1990)
The IMAX format redefined the 3D film industry. The 4D format also started to be used; it seeks to make you become another character in your favorite movie: it may rain in the room, there may be fog, smells and even movement in the seats.

Internet has revolutionized everything, even the way we relate to our friends. Make friends and have fun online!
S
ocial networks have changed the way in which friends communicate and have fun together. Nowadays, making friends is extremely easy; we only need to send a friendship request and wait to be accepted. But this has not always been this way. Back when your parents went to school and social networks did not exist, people had to be courageous, approach the coolest group, and start talking to them hoping to become friends someday. The shiest kids were the ones who suffered the most! In the past, if you wanted to meet a friend to play, you had to go to their place or to a cybercafé. However, nowadays everybody can play together online without leaving their rooms. Also, you don’t need to call your friends to know what they did after school; you can just go over their stories in their social net-
works! As easy as that! New technologies make it possible to send videos or photos, to share statuses or music, to chat long hours, to find groups of people who share your interests, and much more! For instance: you can create a small group to talk about a video game, a movie, a comic strip, an artist or anything you want. You can also invite your friends to your birthday party, to any other party, or to have an afternoon snack at your place. Awesome! Things to keep in mind Be careful with social networks, and have a blast! Do not send friendship requests to strangers. Protect your privacy and make sure your profile can only be seen by your friends. Do not post personal information. Tell your parents if somebody bothers you.
Did you know that... ...according to the consultancy firm Datos Claros and UNICEF, 28% of kids aged 14-15 claim they have “more virtual than real friends?”

Forbidden not to play!
Playing is the greatest fun in the world and, as if that were not enough, it is also beneficial for your health.

Did you know every child has the right to play? The right to play was acknowledged for the first time on November 20th, 1959, when the United Nations General Assembly approved the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Thirty years later, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was passed. Article 31 recognizes children’s right to play. HSBC is working jointly with Asociación SER+ in order to engage children in playing to optimize their emotional maturity, because playing is not only a right: it helps the kids develop their personality, solve problems, experience unforgettable adventures, and share amazing times with friends and family. Playing with your parents is a lot of fun! There is nothing better than taking a
moment every day to play your favorite board game, build big constructions with blocks, do a sport, or simply create a situation to share happy moments with them. In many families, video games are part of their everyday lives. Video games can also be a great opportunity to have fun and foster imagination. Yes, you’ve read it right! The more you play, the more concentration, creativity, and attention you develop. At Creapolis you can design the city you have always dreamt of; you can build and decorate your own house, make music, draw works of art, produce comic strips... and even create videogames! Within every city there is a Creatrón, a fabulous device to save your creations, and it gets bigger and bigger as you create. Time to play!

Ant bear
Jaguar
Coach: The soul of the National Team is the symbol of wild life. Not to mention the similitudes with our last world-champion coach… This is sheer coincidence!
Right forward: This forward really shows its teeth when playing. The largest feline in America knows how to score!
Maned wolf
tapir
Attacking midfielder: We are lucky this animal is Argentina’s number 10! It is known as aguará guazú, which means “big wolf” in Guaraní. It is quiet, a strategist, and... the team captain!
Central midfielder: It is positioned on the midfield. Used to playing under the rain, it will surely shine in Brazil, where the weather is pretty similar to that of the North of Argentina, where it lives.
Rhea
Black howler

How to be sure if the ball really crossed the goal line? For unclear cases, the referees received the information in their watches. The system had 14 exclusive cameras.
Spider-cam
You surely saw the biodegradable foam that disappeared in a minute. Referees used it to mark the place where fouls had to be called, thus preventing the players in the wall from moving forward.

BIOGRAPHICAL COMIC STRIP:
The Lumiére Brothers. Auguste Marie Louis Nicholas (1862 – 1954) and Louis Jean (1864-1948). Creators of the cinematographic projector.
The Lumière brothers were born in Besançon, France, and studied in one of the best technical schools of Lyon, which enabled them to devote their entire enthusiasm and creativity to their father’s photographic company.
Louis and Auguste invented the cinematographic projector, which can be considered as the first film camera. In 1895, they made the first cinematographic projections, which made a great impact on the audience.
At the beginning of the 1890s, Louis developed a sheet that speeded up the photograph development process. Thanks to this invention, the family received great economic benefits and had the chance to expand their business until it became the most important company in Europe.
In 1894, Antoine Lumiére, their father, attended the presentation of the first device that succeeded in making a sequence of photographs give the feeling of motion: the kinetoscope. He was so fascinated that he asked his children to try to find the way to improve it.
The invention became the trend in Paris, which allowed them to open several movie theaters and to make new films. Among the first films shown, the following can be highlighted: Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory, Arrival of a Train at a Station, and Baby’s Breakfast.
The Lumière brothers preferred to face a new challenge: capturing color in photographs, which could only be seen in black and white until then. They developed a technique that was patented in 1907.
In 1901, with 1,300 movies produced, they decided to stop filming and to start marketing their works. The projector-cameras started to be used basically to make documentaries.
Although they failed to realize the business potential of their creation, the Lumière brothers enabled the birth of the seventh art: the movies.
