I
t’s 4.30am. I’m in my PJs, having a sneaky cuppa and getting my head straight for the day ahead. It’s at times like this that the mama juggle never ceases to amaze me. And there’s never a time of year we feel it more than in the downhill slide into Christmas. The end-of-year wrap-ups and unbelievably cute Christmas concerts, combined with the craziness of planning for Christmas and getting organised for a well-deserved summer break, makes for one very frazzled mama. Like most Brisbane families, we often turn to the local playground for a much-needed respite from the chaos. The kids can burn off steam whilst you grab a coffee and just breathe for a moment. So, this issue, we take our team of investigators (aka the kids) to Newport to find out what it reeeally
takes to build the perfect playspace. For our Education feature, we head over to Grace Lutheran College to find out how this innovative school is equipping students of today with skills for the future through its robotics programs. Of course, November also means we are well into the lead up to Christmas! #notstartedshoppingyet. If you are always chasing your tail like me, we have a HUGE Christmas gift guide, with something for everyone (yup, even some sneaky treats for Mum!). We’ve also got a round-up of the best Christmas activities across the region. And, as always, we have all the latest news, reviews, events and more! With love and Christmas sparkles,

IS YOUR FAMILY SWIM READY THIS SEASON? With the weather warming up, swim safety messaging is increasing and for good reason. Despite ongoing aquatic education, devastatingly, drowning is still the number one cause of accidental death in children under five years. With that in mind, swim school leaders at Rackley Swimming are encouraging all
families to improve their year-round water safety awareness, especially in preparation for our Summer holiday season. “Swimming skills can help save lives, no matter the aquatic activity,” said Rackley Swimming General Manager, Cameron Speechley. “That’s why our community message, ‘This is Swimming’, is so important.
Bush Kindy blossoms at NCC Due to popular demand, the Bush Kindy program at NCC Kallangur has expanded to now run twice a week at the innovative centre. Offered to children within the Kindergarten program, children go off-site to the local park where they have access to bush land, water ways and flora and fauna they may not see in their own backyard. Centre Director, Cassie Dinte explained, “Children get to climb trees, explore a world of nature and learning, use their senses to investigate, learn boundaries and rules, but also be children and be free to learn in nature.” Being in a high-density housing area where children are seeing less of the outdoors, the program is a welcome addition for local families.

It highlights how any body of water – surfing, wading, splashing, jet skiing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, tyre rafting, even building sandcastles – should be considered to be as swimming, because if a child falls into the water while doing that activity, swimming skills would be required,” added Speechley. Rackley Swimming also suggests that yearround swimming is not only vital, but a smart decision. World first ‘Early Years Swimming’ research by Griffith University has shown that children exposed to regular swimming from a young age, can be six to fifteen months ahead of the normal population, when it comes to cognitive skills, problem solving, literacy, numeracy, as well as social ability, coordination, and following instructions. “Swimming is one of Australia’s favourite hobbies. Through regular swimming lessons and our booster Holiday Swim Programs, we want to help ensure all Aussie kids don’t just love it, but are safer swimmers no matter the season,” concluded Speechley. For more information, head to rackleyswimming.com.au
KALLANGUR
“It’s not something that many children have access to at home and there isn’t anything else like it in the area, so families are really on board with the concept.” As well as the Bush Kindy program, NCC Kallangur also offers Bush Playtime to the younger children at the centre. “Children from six weeks to four years old can take part in our Bush Playtime,” said Cassie. “Held in our community garden, children can be in nature and learn to use imagination for play – building on the senses and exploring the natural world around us.” The Bush Kindy and Bush Playtime programs at NCC are at no extra cost to families and open to all children at the centre, however, availability is limited.

ith their Buderim centre already rated as ‘exceeding’, Little Village Early Learning is proud to bring its nature-based childcare service to Brisbane, opening a new centre in Bridgeman Downs. Central to their philosophy is the belief that ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ “Our vision is to create and build a caring community that supports children and their families in the important years before school,” said Leonie Macleod from Little Village. Opening in early 2020, the centre will offer quality early learning and childcare for babies and children from six weeks old to school age, as well as offering Kindergarten and a Bush Kindy Program to children over three years. “We believe nature play promotes cognitive, social and emotional development and builds resilience and creativity - all skills that help a child in school and life,” said Leonie. The 10,000m2 site on Ridley Road, Bridgeman Downs, will provide Little Village with the space to create a unique early learning environment while protecting a nature reserve for our local wildlife, flora and fauna. “Alongside our own natural reserve, we are building our own ‘little village’ with connected learning environments for each age and stage of a child’s development,” Leonie said. The centre will offer an inclusive service, providing nutritious meals and snacks, nappies, care products, bedding and hats. Find out more at littlevillage.net.au.

SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT PLAYGROUND? WE SAIL OVER TO NEWPORT TO FIND OUT WHY ITS IS BECOMING A FAVOURITE FOR BRISBANE FAMILIES.
S
tockland is renowned for its innovative parks and playgrounds, creative design and state-of the-art equipment, and the new Spinnaker Park at Newport is certainly no exception. “The playground has been designed around a nautical theme and will encourage children’s imaginations to run wild with a play ship, a coconut rope swing, climbing nets, slides as well as sand and water play activities,” said David Laner, Queensland General Manager for Residential Communities at Stockland. Designed in collaboration with children’s charity, The Touched By Olivia Foundation, the playground is a showcase of accessibility, ensuring children of all ages and abilities can play together. “The playground’s 18 pieces of equipment include a landmark three-storey high sail tower, incorporating a wheelchair-accessible viewing platform with spectacular views over the lake and Bay,” Mr Laner said. “We are proud to be setting a benchmark for inclusive, imaginative outdoor play in southeast Queensland.” The park spans 8851 square metres and provides public access to Newport’s lake, with a launch area for non-motorised water craft such as kayaks and paddleboards. Ben Urban, Managing Director of Urban Play, who constructed the playground, said the design drew on the park’s coastal location. “We wanted to design a playground that celebrates the beach lifestyle that Australian families know and love,’’ Mr Urban said.
16
N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2019
“An intergenerational design approach was taken to design a play environment, which caters to all ages with equipment offering a wide variety of play activities that develop and challenge children’s physical, social and cognitive development.’’ The park also incorporates a central plaza, showcasing public art pieces as well as interactive water features that are illuminated at night to create a spectacular display. “We are excited to be opening up the lake for everyone to enjoy and we are looking forward to Spinnaker Park becoming a recreational hub for the region, reflecting Stockland’s commitment to creating healthy, active communities,” said David. If that’s not enough space to play, Lock Park has also opened recently in Newport, adjacent to the Newport Lock at Jabiru Canal. With a huge grassed area and picnic shelter, this waterfront park is a great spot for ball
games, picnics and family gatherings. “Our newest park complements the recently opened Spinnaker Park and playground,” said David. “Lock Park has been designed to allow visitors to take in views of the Bay, the canals and our centrepiece lake, and is an ideal vantage point for families to enjoy a picnic and throw a ball around while watching the boats come and go.’’ Coffee lovers are also well catered for, with Newport’s Café Playground. A nautical themed playground, the waterfront park is adjacent to Newport’s popular Izba Espresso cafe as well as the Newport Sales and Information Office. “Mums and Dads can relax while enjoying coffee served from a repurposed 40-foot shipping container while children play in the fully fenced playground,” said David. Here you’ll also find the latest in children’s play equipment including elevated rope walks and ladders, slides and swings. There are also two custom-designed shelters, barbecues, toilets, and the space and facilities for families to enjoy parties and gatherings. Located on the Redcliffe Peninsula and 38 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD, Newport is one of several suburbs in Brisbane’s thriving northern corridor, which is becoming popular with families. And with waterfront parks, kilometres of cycle paths, beach access and improved public transport, it’s easy to see why an increasing number of families are ditching inner-city living for this family friendly option. “It is thrilling to see our vision for Newport rapidly coming to life,” said David. “Families are well catered for with a range of schools, shops, dining and entertainment options in close proximity, as well as a future town centre and marina part of the community and within walking distance of all homes.” As the region grows, there are plenty more family friendly facilities in store for Newport. “The community will feature a retail and waterside dining precinct, leafy foreshore parks, kilometres of cycling and walking paths, and easy access to schools, shops, health facilities, public transport and beaches.” A new access road will also directly connect Newport with the neighbouring Moreton Bay Regional Council Nathan Road Sport and Recreation Precinct, which is currently under construction. “These new sports facilities will add to the wealth of opportunities encouraging Newport residents to lead an active and healthy lifestyle,’’ Mr Laner said. More than 13,550 square metres of parkland has been delivered at Newport so far. The flat topography of Newport makes it a perfect site for families to take advantage of a planned 19 kilometres of pedestrian paths and eight kilometres of cycle ways. Newport also hosts regular free family fun events such as its popular outdoor movie nights, children’s entertainment and seasonal celebrations at Christmas and Easter, as well as free outdoor fitness classes through the Live Life Get Active program. FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Grace Lutheran College is equipping students of today with skills for the future through its innovative robotics programs.
A
ccording to a new report by Oxford Economics, up to 20 million manufacturing jobs could be lost to robots by 2030. This new era is now being coined as the Fourth Industrial Revolution – where technologies such as robots, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, drones and the internet, are merging with humans’ physical lives. This revolution is expected to drastically change ours and our children’s future work and recreation lifestyles. Grace Lutheran College, Skills Generation (RTO number 41008) and Cyborg Dynamics Engineering have partnered together to develop a program that seeks to equip the school students of today with the skills they will need to work with the future robotic and

drone workforce. This partnership has been formed in order to provide innovative learning experiences for students. The introduction of the robotics program to Grace Lutheran College has its foundation in current research on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) education to drive the academic and social engagement of students. It is an initiative that encourages young people to take an interest in scientific, mathematic, engineering and technological fields and to cultivate their interest through encouraging open-ended thinking and hands-on learning. The MEM20413 Certificate II Engineering Pathways (build a robot and build a drone) course allows students to develop an
understanding of how robots and drones work. Throughout this program, students will learn to build and maintain their own robot and drones, as well as complete a class project to build and maintain a robot that will provide a commercial service to the college. Once the robot is built, the students will then continue their learning by problem solving how to maintain the commercial robot in a simulated workplace environment. Grace College student, Nathan Lockyer, has been involved in the Robotics Program since Year 7. During that time, Nathan has participated in the FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Global Challenge. Nathan’s family has been involved in the FIRST Global Challenge at Grace College since the inaugural event where K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

Nathan’s sister, Sarah, attended the event in Washington DC. Nathan followed suit by competing for Team Australia in Mexico City during the 2018 edition of the event. At both events, the Grace College and St Peter’s Lutheran College teams were awarded silver medals. “The event in Mexico City was just amazing – we made so many new friends and the quality of the other robots blew my mind. I can’t believe we have been asked to represent Australia again in 2019, this time in Dubai!” says Nathan. Teacher of Robotics at the College, Peter Kellett says, “I have seen Nathan’s confidence and ability grow so much over the past three years. Like we say at FIRST, we don’t use kids to build robots – we use robots to build kids.” Nathan is also enrolled in the Certificate II in Engineering Pathways and is looking forward to improving his hands-on skills and developing more complex machines. Grace Lutheran College is quickly gaining a reputation for excellence in robotics. Each year they host the FIRST Lego League National Finals North, the FIRST Tech Challenge Queensland Regionals and FIRST Global Challenge – International Robotics Olympiad. Grace students also form part of the ‘Pineapples’, Queensland’s only team represented in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The same Grace students will be part of Team Australia in the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge being held in Dubai later this year. Grace Lutheran College commenced its inaugural class in July 2019 with 15 Grace Lutheran students from both the Rothwell and Caboolture campuses. Schools within the Moreton Bay Region are currently being invited, through the Grace Lutheran Trade Training Centre, to provide an expression of interest from individual Year 10 and 11 students wishing to participate in this exciting program in 2020.
Schools and parents of Year 10 and 11 students (in 2020) are invited to find out more information by contacting Leisa Jones, Grace Lutheran College VET Department on leisa_jones@glc.qld.edu.au

DEAR M UM MY...
In the lead up to the new school year, separation anxiety is a common concern. Edge Early Learning takes us inside a child’s day, and shares tips on what you can do to help. Dear Mummy, I know I cry at kindy drop off, and seem really frightened about being separated from you. I’m scared, excited and a hundred other words that I don’t even know yet. I have weird butterflies in my tummy that make me feel strange. But, please don’t be sad! As soon as you are gone, and Miss Ellie gives me a big hug, I feel safe and ready to explore. I start the day with my friends, we chat to each other whilst making the BIGGEST sandcastle. Mummy, you’d be so proud! Sometimes I get frustrated when the other kids take my spade, but Miss Ellie helps us to work it out together so we can all share. After morning tea, it’s time for art activities. We explore the garden for things to make collages. We paint pictures, we get messy. We stick, we colour, we create. I don’t know where the time goes, because all too quickly it’s lunchtime – yum! You’ll be amazed at the foods I try at kindy, we have something different every day! There’s curry, tacos, vegetarian pasta, the yummiest wraps. You’d love it, I know

how much you like going out to places where other people cook food and bring it to you. Rest time comes and I’m exhausted. Though I’m not sleeping in my own bed, the kindy bed feels safe and snuggly, and Miss Ellie is always there to give us a pat or a cuddle. They aren’t as good as your sleepytime hugs, but they still feel nice. The afternoon goes by in a blur, but they are always fun. Miss Ellie has a different activity every day. We play alphabet and number games. The teachers use the words ‘learning intentions’ and ‘learning outcomes’ when talking to each other. I think that is grown-up speak for having LOTS of fun in lots of different ways. So, Mummy… I know you only see me crying, and you worry about me all day. But the butterflies go away and I have the BEST day at kindy – learning, making friends, and beginning to find my place in the world. And, my favourite bit? Your great big hug at the end of the day. Love from, Ollie x

Types of Parenting Arrangements FOLLOWING SEPARATION
F
ollowing a separation, having the right parenting arrangement in place provides parents and children with a greater assurance and confidence for the future. There are several types of arrangements available. It is important to understand the difference to choose what is right for you. A verbal arrangement is an undocumented agreement between separated parents regarding where children will live and arrangements for them to spend time with the other parent. The agreement can also cover things such as education, health and religious arrangements for the children. A verbal arrangement is suitable for separated parents who have good communication and a good level of trust. A parenting plan is a written agreement regarding matters for the children that is dated and signed by separated parents. Parenting plans work best for families who have a reasonable level of communication and fair degree of trust in their relationship. A consent parenting order is where separated parents reach agreement about parenting matters but then make an application to the Court to have the agreement recognised as a formal court order. Separated parents who have difficulties communicating typically benefit from a consent parenting order. In some situations, separated parents may be unable to agree about future parenting matters, in which case it may be necessary to apply for a parenting order. A parenting order is a decision about parenting matters for the children that has been made by the Court. The parenting order will cover who makes decisions about the welfare of the children and where
they live. When making a parenting order the Court will consider different factors relating to what is in the children’s best interests and this may be different to what the parents think is in the children’s best interests. Flexibility

• Arrange 16 biscuits, glaze side down, over the base of the cake pan, cutting to fit so the base is covered. • Peel and cut the fruit from 1 mango. Process the mango until smooth (you should have ¾ cup of puree). Pour the puree into a jug, then wash and dry the food processor. • Combine the cream cheese and sugar in the processor. Process until smooth. Add the sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and sour cream, and pulse until just combined. Add ¾ cup mango puree, pulse to combine. Pour over the base. Arrange more biscuits, glazed side up, over the top. Bake for 40-45 minutes until set. Set aside to cool. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight if time permits. • Lift the slice onto a board or serving platter. Fold the vanilla through the mascarpone. Gently whisk with a balloon whisk to thicken if
necessary. Spread over the biscuits. Cut the cheeks from the remaining mangoes. Using a large spoon remove the mango fruit from the cheeks and thinly slice. Arrange over the mascarpone. Cut into squares to serve.
Tips WHY CALYPSO ® MANGOES WORK BEST:
• They have a smaller seed, so you have more fruit. • Calypso® produce a beautiful thick puree, which is full of flavour. • The fruit is firmer so the fruit will slice easily, holding the shape when them arranging on the cheesecake.
