W
ow, 2020! Can you believe it? When I was a child, 2020 sounded so futuristic. I imagined there would be flying cars, we’d have cities on the moon and wear mad fluoro clothes. In reality, I don’t feel that different from the child I was. Yes, the world has changed, but not nearly as fantastically as I’d envisaged. To find out how my kids imagined their future, I recently asked them what they thought 2050 would look like. Surprisingly it was much the same as my childhood vision: flying cars (yes please!), holidays to space (hmm, sounds cold), and phones implanted inside your head (gosh, no thanks). Diving straight into the future and the new school year, this issue we are all about getting back to school! We head over to the new Kings College campus at Logan Village to find out about their exciting Prep to 12 school opening its
doors this year. To get you set for the new school year, some of the region’s best educators share their tips on how we can help our little ones settle into their new classroom. We also visit the innovative NCC Kallangur Kindy to explore their exciting bush kindy program. Need a lunchbox revival in 2020? We kick your lunchboxes up a gear with some awesome recipes and tips from Australia’s legendary school lunchbox dad, George Georgievski. And as always, we have the region’s best family friendly events and activities, news, back to school goodies, books and movie reviews, and much, much more. Wishing you a fabulous 2020!

Summer holiday fun in the sun ENJOY THE WATER ANYWHERE
A
s the school holidays are well underway, Queenland families are planning their getaways to the beach, river or pool to cool down by the water. Marina Burley, Kingswim Carindale Centre Manager and mum of three says while most people go to the beach, her family pack up, leave the city and go bush. “We love spending time outdoors as a family. We ride motorbikes, go craybobbing, bushwalking and of course if there’s water, go for a swim.” Terri-Anne Ransfield, Kingswim Lutwyche Centre Manager and mum of four says her family makes the most of Queenland’s beautiful beaches. “Our favorite spot is Kings Beach in Caloundra, we’re big fans of Gelateria Milano – the Gelato’s and Sorbets are amazing!” While everyone plans different summer holidays, there’s one thing they all have in common, swimming and the need for water safety. To ensure the littlest member of the family can join in on the summer fun, and the biggest member of the family has peace of mind, Kingswim has compiled its tips for a safe and fun summer. • L E S S O N S : Try to complete at least one full term of lessons before any swimming trips. FEAST
zHarvest has recently launched a new primary education program, aimed at inspiring kids to eat healthily, waste less and become change makers in their local community. Titled FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training), the program is designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food! FEAST gets kids immersed in handson cooking activities in the classroom (no kitchen required). Students are tasked with exploring and designing their own recipes for a ‘School Cookbook’ to encourage healthy eating and help prevent food waste,
while educating and engaging their community. One child in every classroom goes to bed or school hungry every day. Nationally, one in four children are overweight or obese and many do not eat enough fresh fruit and veg. This affects how they learn at school and can lead to poor physical and mental health. Half of all food waste comes from the home, so the kids and their families can all be part of the solution. Designed for Years 5 and 6, the FEAST program runs for 7-10 weeks and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum STEM Learning Areas. ozharvest.org/feast

ettling a child into an early childhood service can be an emotional experience for both children and their families. We create a family-friendly environment that is focused on the child, while supporting the needs of the whole family during the settling in process. We also maintain an ongoing relationship with the service community. We start building a relationship with the child and their family prior to starting, to ensure that the whole family feels comfortable and confident on the first day. We place a great deal of importance on getting to know the child’s personality, family culture and how we can support them while they settle in. We tailor orientation visits for each family and encourage as many visits as necessary to support relationship development with the educators. We encourage a sense of belonging, to assist with the transition from home to the early learning environment. Our indoor/

outdoor spaces encourage a natural flow for children, allowing them to make choices about where they play and encouraging confidence in moving about the learning space. Spending time with your child at the service during dropoff time and sharing stories about their day at Little Village at pick-up time, demonstrates your comfort with leaving them in the care of the educators. The Bush Kindy provides another avenue for children to make a connection with nature. It supports children’s intrinsic learning style, freedom and natural curiosity by providing an opportunity to settle into a truly nature-based learning environment. Opening in early 2020, Little Village Bridgeman Downs will offer quality early learning and childcare for babies and children from six weeks old to school age, as well as offering Kindergarten and a Bush Kindy Program to children aged three years and over.

anuary means many children are starting childcare or kindy for the first time. As unknown territory for both the child and the parents, it can be an exciting yet nervous time! To help your child adjust, make sure you’ve shared a couple of orientation sessions prior to your first day. These sessions are designed for both parent and child to get to know the daily routine at the centre and to make your first day easier. Different centres will provide different items, so check with your own service ahead of time as to what they will provide for your child each day. If you are enrolling at Edge Early Learning, all nappies, wipes, sunscreen and nutritious meals are provided and bedding kits are available to purchase, so all you need to pack is a spare change of clothes. As centre programmes can vary, look for a centre with a philosophy that fits well with your own values. Some may focus on outdoor learning, whilst others may prefer a traditional approach. Edge Early Learning offers a nurturing and open environment, where exploration is encouraged. Aligning perfectly with the Early Years Learning Framework, we believe this inquiry-based approach is best for our little learners. And most importantly, we have fun! Our educators have welcomed many first-time learners into the classroom and are experts in ensuring every child has the best first day on this exciting adventure! Remember, you are never too young to start school! Early education can give your child the edge to succeed when they reach ‘big school’. Edge Early Learning provides quality care and education for children from six weeks to school age, with the convenience of long day care hours. To find an Edge Early Learning centre near you, visit www.edgeearlylearning.com.au and book a centre tour.

Attracting 4,500 school students and offering over 115 talks and workshops, Voices on the Coast Literature Festival 2020 is a significant event in the Sunshine Coast cultural calendar.
t’s our 25th festival this year! It was back in 1996 when two teachers from Immanuel Lutheran College decided to bring authors and illustrators to the Sunshine Coast for one day of talks and workshops, initially involving 23 schools. Now, in 2020, the festival is held over four days, attracts 4,500 school students, offers over 115 talks and workshops by 28 presenters and is attended by 70 schools from a 200km radius. It should suffice to say that the festival has been an overwhelming success over the last 25 years. In 1996, a partnership was formed with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in its first year of operation, which is still strong today. oasting 40 years’ experience in education, King’s Christian College has earned its place as one of the most wellrespected private schools in Queensland. Already with two campuses on the Gold Coast – Pimpama and Reedy Creek – the growing school has been busy constructing a third campus in Logan Village. With the ongoing investment in infrastructure and quantity of housing developments being built in Logan, its easy to see why King’s chose this thriving area of the city to call home. “We are anticipating many families moving to the area,” said Tracey Verreynne, Group Director of Early Learning. King’s College Logan Early Learning Centre opened in October 2019 for children aged two and a half to Kindergarten, whereas the primary school opens in January 2020 for Prep to Year 3 students. Year 4 will start in 2021, and an additional year level will be added each year, with High School (Year 7) commencing in 2024. On completion, King’s College Logan Village will operate an Early Learning Centre, Primary School and High School from the one campus, providing a seamless education for children from two years of age to Year 12. “We are looking forward to welcoming families who are choosing King’s for their Learning journey,” said Ms Verreynne. “Our newly opened Early Learning Centre will give your child a start that’s full of promise, and children attending King’s Early Learning will progress

into Prep at King’s Christian College, providing a seamless transition to big school.” Sharing a campus allows early learners to become familiar with the greater King’s environment. “Preschool students have regular excursions to explore various areas of the College,” explained Ms Verreynne. “From counting school buses, playing on the large ovals, visiting primary classes or having older students reading with us, these experiences add value to the programme that we offer and prepare our preschoolers for their first year of school.” With the Reedy Creek campus turning forty years old and the Pimpama campus turning five in 2020, King’s Christian College Logan is a small school with big school experience. “Our aim is to deliver the same exceptional education program we already deliver at our Pimpama and Reedy Creek campuses,” Ms Verreynne continued. “We can draw on this experience, success and innovative teaching methods to ensure that our King’s Kids are given the best opportunities for success, and that we deliver a Christian Education for tomorrow’s generation.” The early learning centre follows a programme of enquiry-based learning. “Students are given opportunities to foster a love for learning through child initiated and teacher extended learning,” explained Ms Verreynne. “During term time, we also offer opportunity for families with preschoolers to build a sense of community through our weekly Playgroup held in our community room.” King’s Christian College Principal Mr Rees Davis explained that the College’s success lies in its values. “The King’s Foundational Values of Live Purposefully, Love Faithfully, Learn Passionately and Lead Diligently are the basis of the character traits that we seek to develop in our students,” said Mr Davis. “Over the years, King’s students have done remarkably well in all areas of school endeavours. Their academic, cultural and sporting accomplishments have far exceeded what would be considered normal for the State of Queensland,” Mr Davis continued. “Not everyone can be a star performer. Nevertheless, each person can grow to become an honourable person of good character. This is the vision of King’s. We believe that each person is unique, endowed with special talents, and able to grow into the person God desires of him/her.” “We provide affordable education for young people who desire the opportunity to lay the foundations for successful lives,” said Mr Davis.

Getting back to nature
A
s many educators and parents recognise the importance of outdoor play in our increasingly urbanised world, Forest Schools have been growing in popularity across the globe. The concept of the Forest School originated in Scandinavia in the 1950s, as a response to the increased number of women working and the lack of indoor facilities for preschool children. The concept is simple – move the classroom outdoors, where children can learn in nature while climbing trees, exploring waterways, developing their curiosity and resilience. Since then, the movement has grown to see Forest Schools introduced in the UK, Canada and now also in Australia – commonly known here as Bush Kindys.

In Southeast Queensland today, there are several early learning centres across the region that are either wholly Bush Kindys, or are existing centres that now offer an additional Bush Kindy program. One such centre, which has seen a huge success with its Bush Kindy program, is NCC Kallangur. “As Kallangur is a high-density area, many children may not have access to an outdoor area at home,” says Cassie Dinte, NCC Kallangur Centre Director. “We have a lot of families at the centre living in apartments, townhouses, or smaller houses with minimal outdoor space.” For this reason, the centre decided to introduce a Bush Kindy program in 2019. Offered to children within their existing program, Bush Kindy takes place offsite at the local park, where there is bush land,
water ways, and interesting flora and fauna to explore. “The children absolutely love it!” says Cassie. “With their qualified educator, children take their learning outdoors, using their senses to investigate, learning boundaries and rules but also being free in nature. It’s something we took for granted when we were younger but for the little ones today it’s a unique adventure!” With no toys or rigid structure, each trip to the park means something different. “We’ve had times when we’ve gone on bushwalks and we’ve met local community members,” Cassie explains. “One time we met a counsellor and helped to build possum boxes. Another time we met a lady who was doing interpretive dance and we did a lesson with her!” On their adventures each week, children K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . What topics should be covered in
POST SEPARATION PARENTING ARRANGEMENTS?
T
here are several topics that should be included in any post separation parenting arrangement, regardless of whether the parenting arrangement is structured as a verbal arrangement, parenting plan, consent order or court order.
Decision making A post separation parenting arrangement should outline how major long-term decisions will be made for the children, namely, whether decisions will be made jointly by the parents or whether one parent will make the decisions and then inform the other parent.
Parental communication Children should not be used as messengers between the parents. Instead, parenting arrangements should provide for a standard means of communication between the parents. Some options include email, text, phone or a communication app. It is also wise for parenting arrangements to include a process for dispute resolution, in case an issue arises that cannot be resolved.

Schedules for the children
other family members or friends facilitating changeover.
A schedule setting out how the children spend time with each parent is an essential part of any parenting arrangement. A consistent schedule can be set up to apply through both the school terms and school holidays or different schedules may be arranged.. Any schedule that is set up should be age appropriate and have the children’s best interests at heart.
Miscellaneous
Special occasions Any parenting arrangement should include details about how the children will share their time with each parent on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other special occasions.
Changeovers and transitions To avoid disputes and confusion parenting arrangements should cover how the children transition between each household. These arrangements should include the day and time of the changeover, the location of changeover and consent for
There are a range of other topics that can be included in parenting arrangements such as extracurricular activities, passports and travel.
Finances Generally, financial support of the children is dealt with separately from parenting arrangements. Parents who have covered details of financial support for the children in parenting arrangements should seek advice from a family lawyer about how to formalise these arrangements. RECIPE
LUNCHBOX EXPRESS Back to school means back to lunchboxes! Love them or hate them, packing a healthy lunchbox that the kids will eat is a critical part of each day. Never fear, Australia’s School Lunchbox Dad, George Georgievski, is here to help!
CHEESY CHICKEN NUGGETS Makes 8–10 Getting the kids to shape their own nuggets means they’re more likely to actually eat them. These can be eaten freshly baked and are great in lunchboxes too. INGREDIENTS
1 cooked chicken breast, sliced (or use cooked lamb or beef) ½ cup grated cheddar 3 slices of wholemeal bread (or 3 cups roughly chopped bread offcuts) Oil spray, for greasing (optional) 2 tablespoons tomato sauce or barbecue sauce METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C or your air-fryer
on medium heat.
2. In a blender or
food processor, blitz the chicken, cheese and bread for about 30 seconds until the ingredients are well combined.
Lunchbox Secrets GET THE KIDS INVOLVED
Whether it’s cooking, prepping, assembling or even choosing their own fruit at the supermarket, the more I get my girls involved, the more they embrace their lunches. They love helping me come up with fun names for my creations too. 4. If cooking the nuggets in the oven, pop 3. Transfer to a bowl and shape tablespoons of
the mixture into nuggets. You can even get fancy and use cookie cutters to create some awesome shapes.

them on a greased baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes. Alternatively, drop them in the air-fryer for 5–6 minutes. 5. While the nuggets are cooking, divide the sauce among dipping bowls, then wait for the magic morsels to come out of the oven.
STICK TO BITE-SIZED PORTIONS
Kids are too busy to mess around with large portions – they just want to play. A mixture of bite-sized food is easier to grab and go!

RECIPE
ROB’S DATE & COCONUT BITES Makes 9 These yummy two-ingredient bites make an excellent treat to pop in school lunchboxes, as they contain no added sugar. Try adding a little cocoa powder for a chocolaty taste. These keep well in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. INGREDIENTS
10 dates, pitted (or use dried apricots, which are just as yummy) ⅓ cup desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling METHOD 1. Place the dates and desiccated coconut in a
blender and blitz until everything looks mushy and really sticky. 2. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and roll teaspoons of the mixture into nine balls. 3. Roll the balls in a heap of desiccated coconut and ensure they’re evenly coated – the idea is for all the stickiness to be covered by the coconut. 4. Pop them in the fridge for 1 hour until set.
GeorgTe ´o’sp Tips GET FAMILIAR
Start using the lunchbox a month or so before your kid starts school. That way they’ll be familiar with it by the time school rolls around and it won’t be yet another new thing to get used to. HAVE FUN
Channel your inner creativity through your kids’ lunchboxes! An interesting and varied lunchbox is fun for your kids too, and means they’re much more likely to eat what’s inside. KEEP IT BALANCED AND HEALTHY
In each lunchbox, I make sure there is a portion of protein, some veggies, dairy, fruit and a healthy treat. I prefer to include sugar-free treats as I don’t understand treats being automatically associated with sugar. Why reward your kids with something that’s not good for them? REMEMBER THE NUMBER FIVE
Make sure you include five fresh items (three veggies and two fruits) in every lunchbox. This is essential nutrition for growing bodies! PREP IN ADVANCE
I like to be inspired in the moment when making lunches, but I still do some prep in advance to make life easier. I make sure all my fruit and veggies are washed, then it’s just a quick chop and assemble and we’re good to go. I also make some things ahead of time. MAKE IT VISUALLY EXCITING
Picky eaters are more likely to try something new if it looks cool. And if you change up the presentation, they will never get bored. For example, I present like to find different ways to present sandwiches.

Having said that, there’s no need to go all out with works of art in your kids’ lunchboxes. When I was looking for inspiration, I found so many things that were just way too complicated. Keep it fast, healthy and simple and you can’t go wrong!
