Kids in the City Magazine - Brisbane/Gold Coast | Spring 2024 Edition
BRISBANE/GOLD COAST
Welcome to Spring, to warmer days, and our SWIM issue!
Those who know me know that I have a love-hate relationship with swimming. I’m fiercely determined that my children learn to swim, with weekends spent coaxing them into the ocean and after-school sessions spent cheering them on at the pool. All despite my own crippling fear of water. Ironically, after living by the ocean for almost 25 years, I haven’t been able to overcome my phobia, and I am adamant that my kids will not inherit this trait.
On trips north to the reef, you’ll find me holding the towels or hovering at the shoreline, hoping a turtle will come over to say ‘hi’. I don’t think many people understand the importance of learning to swim more than those who are resigned to the sidelines and live in constant fear when around water.
So, to help us all transition to spring and water-safe days, we chat with learn-to-swim expert Chris Shapland to learn more about what makes his family’s unique learn-toswim program so successful.
Still riding the wave from the Paris
Olympics? Our special section takes a look at the swim school that is nurturing infants into olympians. We also have some great tips from Australian Swimming Industry educator Karen Baildon on ways to fast-track your child’s swim development safely. Plus, if your child is showing signs of being scared of the water, we have some great tips on overcoming aquaphobia. I will be putting some of these into practice for myself this spring!
Out of the pool, we visit Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Ashmore to learn more about their dedication to native flora and sustainable gardening program. We also chat with the husband-and-wife duo from Growlife Medical, who are creating a beautiful village for lifelong healthcare for everyone in their care.
As always, we have the regular news, reviews, kid-friendly events and more, all wrapped up in our splash-tastic spring edition.

LITTLE HEROES STRUT THEIR STUFF
at Kidz Fashion Week Gold Coast
They’ve bravely fought cancer, live with disability and have endured countless surgeries. Now, a group of little heroes had the chance to celebrate all they have overcome recently, representing Supertee for Kidz Fashion Week on the Gold Coast.
Kidz Fashion Week enables children and teenagers of all sizes and cultures to showcase their individuality in a way that supports diversity and inclusion as they take to the stage.
This year’s event proudly featured Supertee, a specially designed medical garment disguised as a superhero costume, which makes the lives of children in hospitals a little bit easier.
“These children spend so much of their lives in and out of hospital. It’s fantastic to see them full of confidence on the runway, being their best selves,” says Supertee founder Jason Sotiris.
Jason created the Supertee to help his daughter, Angela, who was diagnosed with cancer as a one-year-old. Their struggles with clothes becoming tangled with IV lines and drips inspired Jason to develop a solution to make dressing easier for children undergoing medical treatment.
Kidz Fashion Week event organiser Terri Svoronos was deeply moved by
Jason’s commitment to empowering children through Supertee.
“This is where Kidz Fashion Week becomes more than just a runway event. It’s a platform
to share the inspiring stories and accomplishments of young people who have spent so much of their lives in hospitals and to raise awareness about important issues.”

AMA PUSHES FOR CRACKDOWN
on misleading toddler milk marketing
The Australian Medical Association is calling for the government’s marketing guidelines on infant formula and toddler milk to be brought into line with international best practices.
The submission says Australia needs a marketing code of practice for breastmilk substitutes that mirrors the World Health Organization’s (WHO) international code.
The AMA is concerned the current code allows unnecessary and potentially unhealthy products to be marketed to parents under the guise of infant formula.
AMA President Professor Steve Robson said, “We want to help parents and carers make informed decisions about their babies by taking an evidence-based approach to health.”
The current agreement only covers infant formulas to 12 months of age, which means that ‘unnecessary’ products marketed at parents, such as toddler milks, are excluded. The WHO’s code
of practice extends to 36 months and classifies toddler milk as a breastmilk substitute.
“Manufacturers and retailers who market infant toddler milk need to be held accountable, and we know the current framework does not protect our children’s health and wellbeing. This leaves the door wide open to invite inappropriate products in at a young age.”
Research shows milk marketed for toddlers does not provide value for money and is often packed with harmful sugars.
“The WHO’s marketing code provides comprehensive protection from irresponsible and manipulative industry marketing practices,” Professor Robson said.

OF LIFELONG SWIMMING A Legacy
Developed in 1938, the Shapland family has taught Southeast Queensland kids to swim for over 85 years. We chat with Chris Shapland to learn more about what makes his family’s unique learn-to-swim program so successful.
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
The Shapland Swimming story spans generations and pools! It all began in Toowoomba in the late 1930s with my grandfather, who used a unique method to teach swimming. This method was then passed down to my father, who, in 1947, secured the lease of the Toowoomba Municipal Baths—a place where I spent most of my childhood!
By observing children learn at the pool, my father continued to refine their teaching method, and in 1973, he opened the very first Shapland Swim School. I took over the family business in 1980, partnered with a business associate, and expanded the swim school over the last 40 years. Today, Shapland Swim School boasts 16 locations across Queensland and Victoria, all offering the unique Shapland learn-to-swim program.
down swimming into manageable steps. We call it Swim in Five, which revolves around one key idea: conquering gravity—more like befriending it!
Back then, we only had two categories: floaters and sinkers. We focused on teaching sinkers to trust the water’s support, relax, and experience that amazing weightlessness feeling.
Swim in Five is all about building confidence. We remove fear from the water and replace it with the fun of discovery. It’s a program that’s been in the Shapland family for generations, and I’m incredibly proud of it.
AND HOW DOES YOUR SWIM PROGRAM WORK?
The Shapland program is all about breaking
It’s a significant shift for a little one to go from feeling gravity’s pull to feeling almost like you’re floating in space! That’s why stage one is all about getting comfortable on the water’s surface. Teach someone how to lie on top of the water and relax. Don’t be frightened. You won’t fall.
It’s really very simple. Then, for those who already know how the water supports your body weight, we teach them how to hold water with their hands and their feet so they can start to get forward motion.
Swim in Five is all about building confidence. We remove fear from the water and replace it with the fun of discovery.
It’s a program that’s been in the Shapland family for generations, and I’m incredibly proud of it.
HOW DOES YOUR TEACHING STYLE DIFFER FROM TYPICAL SWIMMING LESSONS?
In most swim schools, you’ll find ‘station teaching’. Imagine an assembly line—kids rotate through different stations, each with an instructor giving orders for a specific skill. It’s a one-size-fits-all approach, often with a rigid script and a focus on checking boxes.
Here, we ditch the stations for more dynamic teaching. This unique process is designed to be adaptable whether you’re teaching a nervous toddler or a strokerefining adult.
Our instructors are highly trained in Swim in Five but are not robots reciting a script. They are free to interpret the process in a way that resonates with each child. Some kids respond better to clear instructions, while others thrive with visual demonstrations. There’s no cookie-cutter approach—it’s all about finding what works
best for the student in front of them.
AND EVEN YOUR POOLS ARE UNIQUELY DESIGNED FOR THE BEST LEARN-TO-SWIM EXPERIENCE! HOW?
Yes! I have to credit my dad for our specially designed teaching pools.
The key lies in the varying depths. Our standard pools offer eight different water levels. The steps in the deep end are subtly deeper than the shallow end.
Why the complexity? It’s all about building
confidence one step (or splash!) at a time. Half the pool is shallow enough for a twoand-a-half-year-old to stand comfortably, eliminating that initial fear of the unknown. The other half gradually deepens, allowing them to experience deeper water progressively.
These varying depths are like a built-in confidence course. As they move through the pool, they can feel how their body reacts to the changing water levels, gradually introducing that feeling of reduced gravity. We also take water quality very seriously.
Standard chlorine or salt pools are fine, but we believe in Shapland’s ultimate “healthy water”—magna mineral water. This water has been used for its healing properties for centuries, and it’s packed with magnesium and potassium chloride. It’s a win-win— gentle on the skin and a great learning environment.
AND THE CLASSES ARE SEMI-PRIVATE. HOW DOES THAT HELP?
Our class sizes are limited to a maximum of three students, which is crucial for providing individualised instruction to children. With this small class size, there is no waiting around for each child to take turns. We strive to create a friendly and nurturing environment to help your child learn to swim quickly and confidently.
WHAT AGES DO YOU TEACH?
We welcome swimmers of all ages at Shapland! Our journey starts with our free at-home Baby Development Program, which helps prepare little ones as young as six months for their first swim lessons. We’re proud to offer a trauma-free approach focusing on breath control and getting babies comfortable in the water. And the fun keeps going for adults, too—you’re never too old to learn to swim!
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE KIDS MUST LEARN TO SWIM WITHOUT GOGGLES?
Goggles are great for experienced swimmers,
but they can be a false sense of security for children just starting out. Imagine accidentally falling in without them—the surprise and lack of clear vision can cause panic. That’s why we emphasise learning to swim without goggles at Shapland. It helps kids develop a natural comfort in the water and teaches them valuable water safety skills, no matter what they’re wearing.
“We want children to know the sensation of swimming without goggles if they fall into water without goggles on. If a child can fall into the water, float and get to the side of the pool without goggles, they are more likely to survive an accidental fall into the water.

WATER SURVIVAL SKILLS YOUR CHILD SHOULD KNOW
1. Children must get used to having water fully in their faces and eyes. They must be comfortable putting their full faces in water without protection, such as goggles, when learning to swim.
2. Teaching children to lie on top of the water in a relaxed state without goggles is a critical survival skill. This gives them time to call for help if they accidentally fall in or float towards a wall to climb out.
3.
A child should be able to turn entirely and face a wall should they fall into the water. Then, they can slowly try and swim towards it.
4.
Once your child gets to the edge, they should be able to pull or climb out of the pool without needing the ladder.
5. Children don’t need to be expert swimmers to reach safety. However, they need to swim or tread at least 12.5 metres to reach a wall where they can use the ‘climb to exit’ skill.

OLYMPIANS From infants to
FOSTERING EXCELLENCE AT RACKLEY SWIMMING
As the world basks in the afterglow of the Paris Olympics, there's a renewed appreciation for the power of sport to unite and inspire. With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, this unifying force will continue to ignite the passions of Queensland families for years to come. Swimming, in particular, captivates audiences. Races are often decided by the smallest margins, evoking emotional reactions from fans everywhere. This surge
of interest has significantly boosted the swimming industry, and Rackley Swimming stands at the forefront, contributing considerably to this wave of enthusiasm.
A journey from infancy to elite athleticism
Rackley Swimming offers programs for all ages and abilities, from swim safety for infants as young as three months to training for elite athletes competing on the world stage. This comprehensive approach
ensures that everyone can experience the joy and benefits of swimming regardless of their starting point.
“There's no age limit to gaining confidence in the water,” says Jay Clarke, Managing Director at Rackley Swimming. “We have infants who began at three months old and are still in our program. Looking towards the 2032 Olympics, Koa Hurst, son of Ironman Ky Hurst, is one of these dedicated young athletes who is a testament to this journey.”
Rackley Swimming athletes at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics
A proven track record of success
Rackley Swimming's reputation for excellence is well-earned. With 34 learn-to-swim venues across Queensland and New South Wales, this long-standing swim school has consistently produced world-class athletes, including six members of the Australian Dolphins team that went to the Paris Olympics. Jay remarks, "World stages do wonders for the entire sporting industry. They bring our country together, and swimming is just one of those sports that gets you off your seat, shouting and fist-pumping. Wins are determined by milliseconds and millimetres. We are lucky to have provided the Dolphins with six Rackley athletes and are proud to be a part of their incredible journey.”
Legacy of champions: Ky Hurst and the next generation
Ky Hurst, a legend in open water and Ironman competitions, reflects on the unique environment at Rackley Swimming, particularly the Miami squads. “We had six athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris. For the younger swimmers, seeing the dedication and work ethic required to succeed at the highest levels is an incredible opportunity.”
Ky recalls, “I've been swimming here since the mid-‘90s. We've had elite international swimmers like Michael Phelps and Grant Hackett training here and superstar Ironmen like Trevor Hendy. I grew up with Grant Hackett here for multiple years. We absolutely belted it out, which was fantastic. We had the Giaan Rooneys that have come through this pool. The Gold Coast is the ultimate venue, and it's no surprise that Southeast Queensland will host the 2032 Olympics.”
At Rackley Swimming, we are passionate about teaching children the life-saving skill of swimming.
Ky's son, Koa, also trains with the Rackley Miami squads, aspiring to continue his father's legacy. “I like getting in the pool with my mates and training hard so I can maybe get ready for the 2032 Olympics. I want to be an Ironman; I like distance swimming,” Koa shares.
Attracting international excellence
Rackley Swimming's Miami pool has long been a magnet for elite swimmers worldwide.
Looking ahead
As the region prepares for the 2032 Olympics, Rackley Swimming's potential to contribute to future successes is immense. Koa, who will be 19 by then, reflects on his aspirations: “Train more, get better, and be prepared.” His father's advice on moderation and commitment underscores the balanced approach Rackley promotes. Rackley Swimming's uniqueness lies in its ability to nurture swimmers from their first splash to the podiums of international competition. “We are committed to excellence,

Let’s make swimming a safe and enjoyable part of life for everyone.”

aspiring Australian champions TIPS FOR
From
Damien
Jones, Rackley National Team Coach & Olympic Level Coach
1. Perfect your technique
FOCUS ON FORM: Efficient swimming begins with perfecting your technique. Pay attention to body position, arm strokes, and kicking. Aim for a streamlined body to reduce drag, ensuring smooth and consistent strokes. Practice specific drills like catch-up drills for arms or flutter kicks for legs to build muscle memory and enhance overall form.
2. Mix up your workouts
VARIETY IS KEY: Diversify your workouts by alternating between different strokes. This approach works different muscle groups and improves overall strength and flexibility. Include various drills, kick and pull sets and sprints, to keep workouts interesting and challenging. A varied routine prevents boredom and helps develop a versatile swimming skill set.
3. Set realistic goals
AIM HIGH, BUT STAY GROUNDED: Setting achievable goals is crucial for improvement. Start with small, attainable objectives that lead to larger goals. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, to stay motivated. Whether it’s a few seconds off your PB or challenging your skills with a new stroke, each step forward is progress.
4. Listen to your body
KNOW WHEN TO PUSH AND WHEN TO REST: Recognise the difference between pushing your limits and overtraining. Pay attention to your body's signals, and don't ignore signs of fatigue or injury. Rest and recovery are as important as training. Ensure adequate sleep, nutrition, and hydration to support your body's demands.
5. Fitness and fun
ENJOY THE PROCESS: Swimming should be enjoyable and fulfilling, on top of fitness and swimming fast. The love for the sport is what will keep you coming back, even on tough days.
Little Swimmers BIG Adventures
From an idea conceived in a Caloundra internet cafe to becoming an iconic Queensland swimwear brand, Little Shark Fin kid’s swimwear is renowned for its whimsical prints. However, there is much more to these iconic togs than meets the eye. We grab a coffee with founder Philippa Hayball to learn more about the story behind the brand.
Shark Fin has come full circle since its beginning and is now relaunching with your son! How has the journey been?
Yes! Little Shark Fin was born 13 years ago, out of the need parents expressed to me for quality sun protection in swimwear for their kids. However, juggling business and being a single parent meant putting the business on hold for a short while. But we are back and my 12-year-old son is also part of this small family business.
The prints for Little Shark Fin swinwear are so unique! Where does the inspiration come from?
The swimwear design is a collaboration with my friend JoJo. She is an artist who formerly worked in animation and loves creating whimsical and playful scenes. Our fun and vibrant designs allow kids to express themselves uniquely and creatively. Every print is hand-drawn, giving each piece a unique, fun story. Our designs are so different that they stand out in a crowd!
But it’s not just about how they look, right? The Queensland beach life is tough on togs. What's the secret behind Little Shark Fin’s durability?
We've carefully designed Little Shark Fin swimwear to be durable and maintain its shape to withstand the demands of kid life in Queensland. Our swimwear offers UPF50+ sun protection, chlorine resistance, and fade resistance, making it perfect for extended wear. With kids spending countless hours playing in the sun at the beach, pool, camping, and in backyards, our swimwear is up for the challenge!
When is the new range due for release and what can we expect from the designs?
The new range is due in Springtime. It is vibrant in pattern and colour, each a unique expression for any child wearing them. We can't wait to see these designs out on adventures!
The prints are so gorgeous, will you ever branch into adult swimwear?
(Asking for a friend!)
Haha! Other adults have asked, too! Understandably, adults would love something different and something that expresses their creativity, too. We are working on this… watch this space!
What has the response been so far, and where can people see or enquire about Little Shark Fin?
The feedback has been fantastic! The designs have been a labour of love and imagination, and this shines through when seeing our customers’ responses directly when we do markets like Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast. We are also on Facebook and Instagram and have our full range on our website. Enquiries are welcome at info@littlesharkfin.com

Five benefits of LEARNING TO SWIM
We all know learning to swim is a skill for life and creates exciting opportunities to participate in a wide range of aquatic activities in, on or under the water. But did you know swimming lessons have many other long-term benefits for your child?
1
SWIMMING MAKES YOUR CHILD SMARTER
Swimming lessons are perfect for giving your child some fundamental skills before starting school. They increase confidence, fitness, and coordination and improve numeracy and literacy skills.
Research conducted by Griffith University confirms that early introduction to swimming lessons prepares children for school in terms of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities.
Lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said, “The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem-solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.”
2 SOCIAL SKILLS, CONFIDENCE AND RESILIENCE
The key component for participating in any activity is ‘play’. When learning to swim, your child will develop social skills through various activities specifically designed for their age and stage of development. Taking turns and interacting with other children and adults through play is the best way for a child to learn how to socialise with others. A good swimming program incorporates social skills such as waiting, listening to instructions, taking turns, and recognising shapes and colours, all of which help to build confidence in a classroom learning environment.
The structured nature of lessons gives
children the assurance of knowing what to expect and what is expected of them, which in turn helps them feel more secure. Learning to swim involves hours of practice and comes with challenges mixed in with small and big achievements. Developing the ability to effectively handle their emotions, persist, and never give up fosters confidence and resilience.
3
LANGUAGE SKILLS
It's surprising to think that language skills can be developed through swimming lessons. Counting, responding to questions, and expressing emotions verbally can enhance sentencebuilding, numeracy, and literacy skills. Teachers communicate through language, demonstration, facial expressions, singing, and visual aids. Understanding, interpreting, and responding to actions are incorporated into every teacher-swimmer exchange during swimming lessons.
4
PHYSICAL HEALTH AND COORDINATION
Freestyle is one of the most complex strokes to master. The by-product of the long journey of mastery is the coordination of all three midlines, which is vital for lateral thinking and confidence.
Swimming builds fitness, promoting strong muscles, good posture, and overall health. It enhances heart and lung health, boosts the immune system, and leads to better sleep, increased energy, and improved motivation. The pressure of the water increases a range of health benefits,
strengthening muscles, lungs, brain function and gross motor movement in a low-impact environment.
5 INDEPENDENCE
Independence is the best skill of all! There is nothing more rewarding than embracing children who love to achieve. Celebrate every small success with your child. As a result, the confidence gained through new experiences at swimming resonates away from the pool, at home, at school and even in the playground.
Remember children are never safe in the water but SAFER. The ‘R’ reminds us there is always a risk in an aquatic environment. Always supervise your child. There is nothing quite like enjoying uninterrupted quality time playing in the water with your child.

SUFFERING FROM AQUAPHOBIA? Is your child
Is your child terrified of water? Many parents of water-phobic toddlers and children find themselves caught in a frustrating cycle of delaying swim lessons, hoping the fear will simply disappear. While it's natural to feel overwhelmed, this fear won’t go away by itself, so it’s important to address it in a caring, understanding and safe way.
According to Kingswim Area Manager Natalie Fletcher, there are several effective techniques for helping your child overcome their fear of water. Once they conquer their fear, they can become confident and competent swimmers.
WHAT CAUSES AQUAPHOBIA?
There are several factors that can cause aquaphobia in kids. As with most phobias, it can be caused by one factor alone, or a combination of several factors over time. These could include:
• Parents passing fear of water down unintentionally
• Separation anxiety (from their parents)
• Anxiety caused by the noise, activity and smells of the pool
• The memory of a negative or traumatic experience in water
• Dislike of getting wet
• Dislike of water going in their nose or eyes
• Seeing an upsetting water-related incident in the pool or on TV
When working to overcome your child’s fear, try to establish the cause of their aquaphobia; doing so will make it a lot easier to address.
HOW DO YOU TEACH A CHILD WHO IS AFRAID OF WATER TO SWIM?
Often children who are afraid of swimming have sensitive, intense or inflexible temperaments by nature. It’s important for you to be positive and relaxed at all times; this helps to take the pressure off them in what can be a very stressful situation.
“Validate their feelings and never be agitated or judgmental when dealing with them. Your patience is also key to helping them to overcome their fear of swimming.”
Make trips to the swimming pool as fun as possible and your child should slowly start to make positive associations with the activity.
If they have a complete fear of water rather than a specific fear of swimming pools, you might want to start with baths and paddling pools.
It could be the case that your child is more scared by the idea of swimming than the actual experience. In these cases, it is essential to take some time to observe the surroundings before they get started.
Natalie says, “Encouraging them to play with water toys on the side of the pool is a great way to build comfort. The next step, if they’re feeling comfortable, would be to do some paddling.”
You will see their bravery and confidence start to increase every time they complete a step. Achieving these small goals will help keep your child motivated, and small age-appropriate rewards such as stickers or small toys will also help.
Consider social anxiety as a potential factor behind a fear of swimming. In such cases, choose one-on-one lessons and opt for a smaller, quieter pool. Professional swimming instructors are trained to recognise and address this fear and use effective techniques to overcome it.
If you have any doubts at all, speak to them prior to the first lesson. “It’s essential not to make their fear of water a big deal,” says Natalie. “It is quite common and perfectly natural amongst children and can be overcome with patience, reassurance and a combination of techniques.
community JOIN A
We know that swimming lessons are critical for a child’s safety around water. Early exposure to swimming assists young children in becoming comfortable in the water, significantly reducing the risk of drowning.
But beyond safety, swimming lessons provide valuable opportunities for socialisation and open the doors to a new community for the whole family.
Young children thrive in environments
where they can interact with peers, and swimming lessons offer a unique setting for making friends. As they play games, learn new skills, and encourage one another, children develop important social skills such as teamwork, communication and empathy. These interactions can lay the foundation for creating friendships and a positive attitude toward physical activity.
Participation in community events like school swimming carnivals is another significant benefit of early swimming
lessons. These events are not just about competition; they are celebrations of physical fitness, personal achievement, and community spirit. For young children, being part of a school swimming carnival can be a thrilling experience. It allows them to showcase their skills, gain a sense of accomplishment, and feel included in school activities. These positive experiences can boost self-esteem and encourage a lifelong love for sports and exercise.

Fast-track your child’s
SWIMMING DEVELOPMENT
All parents want their children to be safer in and around the water. However, these potentially lifesaving skills can take many years to learn. But is it possible to fast-track this process so toddlers rapidly develop strong and independent swimming skills that could save them in potentially lifethreatening aquatic situations? And is it possible to do that while still experiencing kind, caring and fun swim lessons?
Karen Baildon, founder of Superfish Swim Schools, believes it is possible, but it requires much greater exposure to water at this formative age.
“The amount a baby or toddler is exposed to water is critical in a successful learn-toswim progression. But for fast-tracked skill development, parents and swim teachers should also be nurturing a love of the water from a very early age,” says Karen.
START SWIMMING EARLY
Many misconceptions exist about babies learning to swim, such as the belief that swimming is a waste of time and money or that babies do nothing but splash around. However, baby learn-to-swim programs are crucial to a child's aquatic education!
Karen recommends starting conditioning swimming techniques with babies as young as possible in the shower or bath at home, such as floating, water over the face, and lots of bath time with a parent.
“Also, start swimming lessons with babies as young as possible,” Karen adds. “Studies have shown that the earlier you start your baby in an effective learn-to-swim program, the earlier they become strong, independent swimmers, which could save their lives one day. When taught effectively, building on the skills they have gained in baby classes, young toddlers can develop high water safety skills based on repetition of effective drowning prevention skills.”
SWIM OFTEN AND CONSISTENTLY
“Attending weekly swimming lessons is fantastic, and you may get strong swimming skills by school age, but
One ½-hour lesson per week equals:
= 2 hours of swimming each month
= 13 hours of swimming per 6 months (or 2 days of school)
= With lessons missed with sickness, most children attend around 20 hours per year of swimming lessons!
Can you imagine a child learning to read or write in less than a week?
sometimes that’s too late,” Karen says. “The reality is these young children will not hold high water awareness skills if they only attend one half-hour swimming lesson per week. Toddlers need more if we are expecting them to achieve independent drowning prevention skills.”
Having two swimming lessons per week consistently throughout the year is ideal until the skills are established. According to Karen, it’s also important not to stop swimming lessons during winter because toddlers can lose their skills due to underdeveloped muscle memory.
“Practice swimming skills outside of lesson times. Visit your local pool or enjoy time in the backyard pool, and don’t have unrealistic expectations—this is a process, and parents and teachers need to work together,” Karen adds.
KEEP IT FUN!
Swim lessons and any time in and around water should be a fun and positive experience for little ones, but make sure they are learning actual life-saving skills! “We know that accelerating classes or even their exposure to water means your child can learn drowning prevention skills up to four times faster,” says Karen. However, when learning life saving skills, Karen advises that you ensure your lessons do NOT teach:
Lessons with aids like floaties. Children
become dependent on aids if taught with them. Children need to be taught independence and their own buoyancy in water. “Clear, digestible knowledge about how our body works in water is critical.” Teaching children to blow bubbles. Its dangerous in drowning prevention. “‘Breath Holding’ is vital for buoyancy. Our lungs full of air are natural floatation devices!” Swimming classes chasing after balls and toys in lessons. “Its dangerous. At this young age, the lesson should be teaching skills for drowning prevention and selfsaving in water.”
Lessons with the focus on games, splashing and songs. “ Face up floating, rolling to a back-float and catching a wall or ledge all saves lives if taught and developed in lessons.”

NURTURING NATURE
THE NATIVE FLORA AND SUSTAINABLE GARDENING PROGRAM CREATING A LIVING CLASSROOM.
At Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure in Ashmore, the gardens are blooming with purpose and passion. The centre’s commitment to growing native flora is not just about beautifying the surroundings, but also about creating a rich, educational experience for the children and fostering a deep connection to the land. With the guidance of Chef Mitch and Assistant Director Madi, the centre explores the myriad uses of native plants, from their medicinal properties to their culinary potential. This initiative is a testament to the centre’s philosophy of the outdoor classroom and their passion for Caring for Country and privileging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings.
driven the decision to focus on the gardens and introduce native flora. The team believes that, in some contexts, the deep connection to the natural environment and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives can get lost. By cultivating native plants, the centre aims to honour and integrate these perspectives into their daily routines and programs.
The gardens are more than just a place to grow plants; they are a living classroom where children can learn about Australia’s rich history and landscape.
Sanctuary Ashmore’s gardens are more than just a place to grow plants; they are a living classroom where children can learn about Australia’s rich and diverse history and landscape. The Centre’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) team is passionate about Caring for Country, and this ethos has
The children’s involvement in the gardens is integral to their learning experience. They love watching and helping as the team works in the garden, gaining a firsthand understanding of the effort and care that goes into cultivating plants. This hands-on involvement helps to foster a sense of ownership and pride in the garden’s success.
Sanctuary Ashmore has always placed a strong emphasis on exploring the natural environment, with excursions to Forest School and The Spit forming a key part of their curriculum. Introducing native flora into the centre’s gardens is a natural extension of this focus. By bringing local context into the
centre, the team aims to create a seamless connection between the children’s outdoor adventures and their everyday learning environment.
This initiative is not just about growing plants; it’s about embedding a philosophy of sustainability and respect for nature into the children’s lives. By learning about native plants and their uses, the children gain a deeper understanding of their heritage and the importance of caring for the environment. This knowledge is crucial in fostering the next generation of environmentally conscious individuals.
One of the most exciting aspects of Sanctuary Ashmore’s gardening initiative is the paddock-to-plate project led by Chef Mitch. This project focuses on teaching children about the journey of food from the garden to their plates, highlighting the importance of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. With the help of Sanctuary’s little gardeners, Mitch regularly harvests produce like lettuce, mushrooms, capsicum, basil, and mint from the garden, incorporating these fresh ingredients into the centre’s meals.
The paddock-to-plate initiative offers numerous learning opportunities and outcomes for the children. For instance, lettuce is harvested semi-regularly and
used in sandwiches, while mushrooms are picked and added to various recipes. Mitch teaches the children the best practices for harvesting each product, ensuring they understand the importance of timing and technique. This hands-on experience not only enhances their gardening skills but also gives them a tangible connection to their food.
In addition to these everyday uses, Mitch and Madi are working hard to create recipes that feature native ingredients. One of their current projects is devising a recipe for lemon myrtle iced tea using leaves from the newly introduced lemon myrtle plant. This innovative approach aims to incorporate native flavours into the children’s diets, providing them with a unique and culturally enriching culinary experience.
Sanctuary Ashmore’s dedication to growing native flora and integrating these plants into their educational programs is a reflection of their broader vision for early childhood education. By fostering a deep connection to the land and instilling values of sustainability and respect for nature, the centre aims to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious and culturally aware individuals.
The success of this initiative at Sanctuary Ashmore has also inspired plans to
expand the use of native ingredients across all Sanctuary centres. Chef Mitch and Assistant Director Madi are leading the charge, creating recipes that can be shared and enjoyed by children at other centres. This collaborative effort ensures that the benefits of this program extend beyond Ashmore, enriching the children's educational experiences across the Sanctuary community.

GROWING
A VILLAGE
GROWLIFE MEDICAL AND
THE
POWER OF LIFELONG HEALTHCARE FOR FAMILIES
Remember the comforting presence of the family doctor who knew your entire family by name, tracked your growth spurts, and treated your scraped knees with a smile?
Committed to enhancing healthcare through connection, Growlife Medical is reviving that sense of community in healthcare in Brisbane, creating a ‘village’ for everyone in their care.
With the rise of large medical centres and frequent changes in doctors over recent years, have you noticed that healthcare has become more impersonal?
Dr Aaron and Alison Chambers, a GP and a pediatric nurse/midwife, recognised this trend. Therefore, in 2017, they created Growlife Medical with a vision for a better model of collaborative general practice.
“In an increasingly disconnected society, people—especially families—need social connection,” says Aaron. “Many of the problems we face as GPs have more to do with what's happening outside the clinic walls, such as social connection,
family relationships, community, and cohesiveness. It’s all those things that impact a person's health that general practice used to be much more involved in,” says Aaron.
The ethos of this innovative medical centre is that strong connections during pregnancy and early life will improve the health of individuals, families, and the community by establishing healthy habits and social cohesion for life. This is the driving force behind their decision to integrate antenatal and postnatal midwifery services, lactation consultants, music therapy, paediatric dietitians, and child health and practice nurses into routine GP care.
PREGNANCY AND EARLY PARENTHOOD CARE
Pregnancy and early parenthood are times of enormous uncertainty and health worries. Therefore, Growlife Medical offers comprehensive prenatal care, seamlessly coordinating with midwives and local hospitals to ensure a smooth transition. Alison explains, “We support mothers throughout their pregnancy by offering comprehensive information, coordinating care with midwives, conducting newborn classes, and collaborating with local hospital services.”
After delivery, mothers and babies are welcomed back to the medical centre as soon as possible for checkups by a dedicated
HEALTH
team of nurses, GPs, and midwives, including perinatal psychologists, to address postnatal anxiety and depression. Lactation consultants provide in-clinic and home visits to support breastfeeding, a crucial factor in a child's long-term health.
Baby Nurse at Growlife Medical Kay Whitby, adds, “The breastfeeding program at Growlife has been so successful that our breastfeeding continuation rates are double the national average, which is a testament to our commitment to long-term health outcomes for mothers and babies.”
CARING FOR A COMMUNITY
This community integration goes far beyond medical care, with Growlife actively fostering family relationships through parent groups and community activities.
“When we were first thinking about establishing a practice, we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if parent groups are integrated with the clinic?’” Alison says. “People living within that very local area can meet each other and develop relationships, and then their kids have that cohort they grow up with. I experienced that with my own children, and the parent group you become part of early after having a baby really creates that village that allows your kids to grow up healthily and have those family connections and those shared life experiences.”
They've even implemented a program called ‘SongLife Connections’—a music therapy group specifically designed to strengthen the bond between parents and their little ones while fostering social connections amongst parents themselves.
Music Therapist Amy Cooper, who runs the program at Growlife specialises in supportive music practices with neurodivergent children and adults. She also designs individual programs for those with speech delay, challenges in physical coordination, and emotional regulation.
“I am passionate about using music to enhance and shape social relationships and strengthen family bonds to promote overall health,” says Amy.
BUILDING HEALTHY HABITS FOR A LIFETIME
Early childhood presents a crucial opportunity to establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Growlife offers child nutrition classes led by dietitians, beginning with the introduction of solid foods for babies as young as 4-6 months and continuing through toddlerhood.
Aaron stresses the importance of early
intervention, stating, “Establishing healthy habits from a young age is crucial. Our experienced nurses collaborate closely with GPs to ensure that routine child health checks and vaccinations are carried out on time.”
Growlife Medical's philosophy extends beyond early life. Alison adds, “We have established a strong reputation in early life services, but our focus is on providing comprehensive healthcare for the entire family throughout their lives.”
GROWING AUSTRALIA’S HEALTHIEST COMMUNITIES
With so much additional support at these unique Brisbane medical centres, Growlife Medical is more than just a medical practice; each is a vibrant community hub. They believe in supporting families, fostering connections, and creating a village where children can thrive. By focusing on continuity, collaboration, and early intervention, Growlife Medical empowers families to build a foundation for lifelong health and well-being.
Aaron says, “Our core purpose is to support individuals, grow stronger families, and create Australia’s healthiest communities. We look forward to welcoming you to Growlife Medical.”

GRINDING THEIR TEETH AT NIGHT?
Are you concerned that your child might be grinding their teeth at night? Dr Andrew Gikas, a dentist specialising in sleep and bruxism and the relationship between good oral health and sleep health, has expert tips on what to do.
Has your child complained of a sore jaw, headache, or teeth sensitivity? Or has a dentist commented on their teeth showing wear? These could be tell-tale signs of bruxism or teeth grinding, a medical condition characterised by the mouth’s muscle activity resulting in grinding, clenching, or gnashing of teeth.
Bruxism is relatively common, affecting both children and adults. Estimates suggest that approximately 8% to 31% of the general population experiences bruxism at some point in their lives.
Bruxism is particularly common in children, with studies suggesting that up to 38% of children experience it—that’s almost one in four kids. While many children outgrow it, some may continue to grind their teeth into adulthood.
RECOGNISING THE SIGNS OF TEETH-GRINDING
Bruxism often exhibits various signs and symptoms, including:
Teeth grinding: It happens both during the day (awake bruxism) and at night (sleep bruxism), the latter being more prevalent. It starts with a feeling of pressure in the jaws, face or temples and is often accompanied by a grating or grinding noise when the teeth rub against each other as the jaw moves from side to side or clamps closed. Facial discomfort: Persistent jaw pain or tenderness may signify habitual clenching
or grinding.
Tooth sensitivity: Bruxism can erode enamel over time, leading to heightened sensitivity to temperature and sweet stimuli.
Headaches: Grinding strains facial and head muscles, frequently resulting in tension headaches, particularly in the mornings.
Dental damage: Bruxism can cause teeth to fracture, chip, or flatten, necessitating dental intervention for restoration, such as crowns and implants.
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF BRUXISM
While bruxism may appear to be a minor inconvenience, its consequences can be more profound than meets the eye and include:
Dental deterioration: over time, bruxism can wear down tooth enamel, leading to cavities, fractures, or even tooth loss.
TMJ Disorders: chronic grinding can strain the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in the jaw (these are the two joints that connect the lower jaw to your skull, sliding and rotating in front of each ear), resulting in pain and dysfunction.
Reduced quality of life: facial pain, headaches and dental issues can significantly diminish well-being.
Treatment for TEETH GRINDING (AND THE COST)
The expense of treating bruxism varies based on severity and treatment options.
• DENTAL PROCEDURES: Restorative treatments like dental bonding, crowns, or veneers may be required, and they can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars per tooth.
• NIGHT GUARDS: Custom-fitted night guards can safeguard teeth during sleep. Depending on the materials and level of customisation, they typically cost between $300 and $800.
• THERAPY AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES: counselling or stress management methods may aid in addressing underlying stress contributing to bruxism. If successful, these may eradicate teeth grinding altogether.
• MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS: in severe cases, medications or therapies for underlying sleep disorders or TMJ dysfunction may be necessary, adding to overall costs.
Though bruxism may seem harmless, its impact on dental health and overall well-being can be substantial. If you suspect your child is grinding their teeth, consult your dentist.
