KID-FRIENDLY BYRON FOR EVERY BUDGET!
Family owned with female dentist and oral health therapist / oral myologist
NEW DENTAL SERVICE GOES BEYOND YOUR TEETH Going to the dentist isn’t just about brushing your teeth and cavity protection! Family owned Gold Coast Dental and Denture Centre is excited to launch the only dedicated area and special program for children with nonnutritive habits. The centre will be the only certified practice on the Gold Coast to offer the ‘Thumb Sucking Program’. Owners James and Imola Foster pride themselves on creating a child friendly environment and along with Dr Philippa McCarron their aim is to help children grow healthy teeth and jaws into adulthood. “Our team and practice has grown from a denture clinic to a family practice with a passion for early intervention, developmental assessment and detecting
growth in children’s oral health,” said Imola Foster. “We are parents of young children ourselves and the passion has come from lack of services for early years’ intervention.” Additional services offered include: • Tongue Tie assessment and release with laser. • Oral Myology – developing good oral habits around correct breathing, swallowing and oral habits. • Pre-orthodontic treatment with the Myobrace system. Imola and Dr McCarrons’ goal as mothers and providers is to help young children and families achieve the best growth of their child’s jaws.

I
f I had to choose my favourite celebration, Easter would win every time. I adored the Easter Bunny as a child. I always believed he would give the most amazing furry cuddles, and the mischief of hiding chocolate eggs around the house was far more appealing than Santa’s stockings (plus the big red man kinda scared me a little!). The Easter Bunny also took the time to leave us a handwritten letter each year telling us what colour eggs were ours to collect (a clever way to stop my older siblings grabbing them all first, thank you Mr Bunny!). Even as an adult, he’s still my favourite holiday hero. Why? 1. Because he doesn’t live in the North Pole (brrrr… too cold for me!) 2. There’s no requests, letters or decisions. Just one product – chocolate eggs for everyone. That’s my kind of shopping list. 3. He’s cute, fluffy yet a bit of an enigma. Who knows what he really looks like? 4. He doesn’t just drop and run, he makes it into a fun game before he hops on out. 5. I love treasure hunts! 6. Did I already mention the chocolate? March also holds a special place for the Kids on the Coast team as it’s our birthday! And 2019 is a big one as we turn 15 (wow)!
Since joining the team many years ago, and then taking ownership several years ago, this fab little magazine is my third baby, where I live, breathe and (rarely) sleep everything that is Kids on the Coast. Every milestone we achieve, every comment we receive, I’m one very proud mama bear. So, a huge thank you to our amazing advertisers, whose support allows us to continue to produce. And a huge thanks to our fabulous readers, for liking, sharing, chatting and being an essential part of the Kids on the Coast community. As well as celebrating our birthday, this issue we head down to Byron Bay to get the low-down on enjoying a family-friendly, budget-friendly weekend in Northern NSW. We also delve into the digital world to chat to the experts about keeping kids safe online. And of course, with all the latest news, events, education stories, local interviews and more, it’s another bumper issue made with love and fuelled by (way too many) chocolate eggs. Hoppy Easter!

H A P P Y F I R S T B I R T H D AY H O TA ! After more than 30 years as the Arts Centre, HOTA unveiled their new name, Home of the Arts as well as launching their spectacular outdoor stage twelve months ago, and after celebrating a huge year of events, arts and music, the arts precinct has even bigger things planned for 2019. HOTA CEO Criena Gehrke expressed that the Home of the Arts is making its mark on the Gold Coast, “You can expect more big things from us this year. We plan to keep the surprises coming with more unexpected art in our beautiful
parklands, and plenty of amazing events for everyone.” HOTA was also the centre point of various community events and school holiday programs, with their Kids Take Over mini-fests which were popular with kids and parents from all over the Gold Coast. HOTA worked with more than 400 local artists since the rebrand, and joined forces with Bleach Festival, the Gold Coast Film Festival, The Farm and Storyfest and will continue to make a significant impact on the Gold Coast’s arts and culture scene.

JINGERI WALLAL WAHLU!
ABORIGINAL FOR ‘WELCOME EVERYONE’
S
everal research studies have shown that exposing children to other languages and music at an early age helps develop and enhance their cognitive and problem-solving skills. It also encourages creativity through play, breaking down inhibitions and instilling confidence making them less self-conscious in front of their peers as they move through their schooling. Opening childrens’ minds through language and music is an integral part of the curriculum at GC Child Care Centres and they have offered a Yugambeh program at their centres for many years. The Yugambeh language people are the traditional custodians of the land located in southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales and their culture is steeped in tradition. “Our program teaches children the local Yugambeh language through song, dance and stories,’ explained Kylie McLean, GC Child Care Centres General Manager. “As an indigenous woman myself, I am very proud that our centres represent our traditional custodians with a program our children absolutely love.” Many of the parents at GC Child Care Centres comment on their children coming home and sharing dreamtime stories with the rest of their family at the dinner table, or they hear them singing songs in Yugambeh in their bedrooms. The Yugambeh language is fun for the children to learn as the words have unique sounds that roll of the tongue in a different way to that of the English language. Singing plays a big part of the program with the children learning traditional nursery rhymes in Yugambeh language, generally with actions to match improving cognitive skills as well as gross and fine motor skills. Several team members across the centres have Indigenous heritage K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
to contribute to the program but other representatives from within the local indigenous community regularly attend to bring new and exciting learnings to the children. Recently an elder named Uncle Allen visited the Benowa centre to show the children how to play the digeridoo and perform a smoke cleansing ceremony which had the group in awe and full of questions. The educators love the program just as much as the children. During NAIDOC Week an indigenous pre-school student brought his mother and grandfather into the classroom. They talked to the children about significant Australian animals and their meaning and dreamtime stories within the Aboriginal culture. “It was so interesting for all of us,” said Hannah Jebramek, pre-school teacher at GCCCC Bundall. “I love the community of this program and how it brings us all together through understanding and respect.” When the Bundall centre opened two years ago the founding families and children created a beautiful Aboriginal floor art that makes a striking and relevant statement at the centre. GC Child Care Centres also likes to take the children out into the community to give the program further depth. As part of their Bush Kindy Explorers nature-play program the children regularly visit different areas of the Gold Coast to learn about the local flora, fauna and history. One of their favourite spots in Burleigh Headlands which is drenched in Aboriginal history and cultural importance. The Educators explore the landscape with the children and they also visit the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre which offers insight into the spirituality and society of the Yugambeh Aboriginal people. GC Child Care Centres have three locations on the Gold Coast: Benowa, Bundall and Mudgeeraba. M A R C H / A P R I L 2019

ANGELA Owner & Editor Going to my first music festivals, I totally fell in love with the music and energy. And working early mornings at my first job at a bakery to pay for it! Advice, I have soooo much! But mostly have more confidence in yourself. Those things you are itching to do, but don’t think you can? Do them! Oh, and never choose a boy over your passion. If he is right for you, you can have both the boy and the dream.
TANYA Production Manager It would have to be ‘80s music (A-ha, Bon Jovi and Duran Duran rocked my world!) and chasing boys (living in a small town in NZ there really wasn’t much else for a 15 year old to do!). Advice: Don’t sweat the small stuff and be true to yourself !
HELEN Owner & Account Manager

At 15 I got myself a ‘proper’ job at Safeway as a checkout chick, worked far too many hours but saved lots of $$$$$’s! I also discovered Bacardi and Coke (sorry Mum!). I was IN LOVE with George Michael and my bedroom walls were plastered in his posters. Be nice to your parents, listen to them when they say you have plenty of time for boys. And enjoy being young, it doesn’t last long.
Definitely hanging out with my friends and dancing, those two things kept me in school! One of the things I do look back on now though, especially after having three kids is running around the beaches in a cozzie and never once giving a thought about how my body looked. Advice: Always be yourself. Never change for anyone. Don’t ever apologise for your confidence, your passion or your ambition.

I got my first job! I had some money to call my own (just a little of it!). Piece of advice for my 15-year-old self? Don’t worry about friends and fitting in at school. KEEPING KIDS SAFE
ONLINE With technology changing faster than you can say ‘snapchat’, how do we allow our kids access to the online world whilst also ensuring they are safe?
O
ne of the most hotly debated topics in households across the region is undoubtedly online access and screen time. Kids crave it whilst parents are justifiably concerned. Screens can be a wonderful way for us all to learn, get information, socialise and be entertained, but they cannot be the only way we do this. And unfiltered online access opens a door to a plethora of inappropriate content and chat. Martine Oglethorpe from The Modern Parent believes that managing screen time is based less on time limits and more on the effects of the screens and the impact on other areas of their lives. “Time limits can be effective when children are young and they aren’t able to regulate their behaviours without our input,” advises Martine. “However, we also need to be teaching our families and ourselves ways of incorporating the technology and devices in ways that are balanced and healthy.”

K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
TO FIND OUT WHETHER THEIR SCREEN TIME IS HEALTHY, ASK THESE THREE QUESTIONS: 1. W H AT A R E T H E Y D O I N G W I T H T H E S C R E E N S ?
Are they playing games or viewing content that helps them learn? Are they merely consuming content or are they being creative? There are vastly different uses of screen time and this must be remembered when talking about how much screen time kids have. 2. W H AT E F F E C T I S S C R E E N S H AV I N G O N T H E M?
Is the activity or connection beneficial and helpful? Or is it taking away from their day, or having a negative effect on their wellbeing or their self-worth? Are they learning, growing and being motivated? Or are they wasting time and energy on people or followers that shouldn’t count? 3. W H AT A R E T H E Y M I S S I N G O U T O N?
Using screens can certainly play a part in their day but they also need time to have active play and exercise, have face-to-face interactions, have time to be bored, time to let their mind wander, time to eat meals with the family, and to sleep uninterrupted.
WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE AGE FOR A CHILD TO HAVE THEIR FIRST PHONE? A lot of this will depend on what the phone’s capabilities are, because getting a phone and getting internet access are two quite different things. “A child of any age can have access to the internet as long as it is monitored, filtered and done with intention and purpose,” says Martine. “A parent can use the internet together with a young child for all manner of information and investigation and it may be a really useful tool to learn new things or explore areas of interest.” “Having free reign to search the internet without monitoring or filtering however, shouldn’t be given to children at all, as the internet obviously opens up a world of inappropriate content, as well as being a doorway for people to make contact with young people.” Getting a phone with internet capabilities is vastly different, as this opens a child up to a world of online content, contacts and connections that they need to be cognitively ready to handle in terms of their behaviours K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
and their ability to think critically alone. “Having a phone usually means the parent has little input into what happens with that phone, so one needs to ensure that child is socially, emotionally and cognitively ready,” explains Martine. “As most apps and social media require an age limit of at least 13, getting a phone too soon before this time can obviously lead to times when that cognitive thinking and behaviour is not developed enough yet and can put young people in situations they are not ready for.”
HOW TO MONITOR ONLINE ACTIVITY Another quandary facing many parents is how much monitoring is required. Kids want a little privacy but parents want to ensure they are safe. Monitoring a child’s online activity varies greatly with different ages and with individual children. When young people start out on a social network Martine recommends giving access to one network at a time. “This way parents can access and monitor as much as they can, using this time to teach and guide in the appropriate
behaviours,” she says. “Looking for teachable moments to help learn skills and thinking is also a more effective way to teach than lecturing a child on cyber safety. There are people doing the wrong thing online all the time so one never needs to look far to find these teachable moments!” Whether it’s a sport star who lost their sponsorship deal for an inappropriate tweet, or the group text that was intended for four friends but was viewed by eight parents, using these examples of how we lose control of our audience are much more effective when we can provide real life examples.
ARE THERE ANY APPS TO BE WARY OF? All apps have the ability to get young people into trouble if they are not ready for them or not being used in the right way. “Every social network also has the ability for young people to view porn or inappropriate content, to experience cyber bullying, and to be contacted by people who don’t have their best intentions at heart,” says Martine. “That being said, there are certainly some apps that take more care when setting up for M A R C H / A P R I L 2019

safety issues, and there are those apps such as Yubo, developed for young people to ‘meet friends’, that can open them up to a world of people who are waiting for young people who may be somewhat vulnerable to make those online connections that won’t serve them well.”
WHAT ABOUT ONLINE GAMES SUCH AS FORTNITE AND ROBLOX? Having some knowledge and understanding of how games work must be a priority when allowing kids to play popular games. “You don’t have to know every single aspect of the game but some initial research can easily help determine whether a game is appropriate for your child,” Martine says. Organisations such as Common Sense Media review every app, game and media, and can be a great way to find out the dangers or elements to be aware of. “Watching YouTube videos of others playing a game can help alert parents to any themes or content they may need to know about or discuss with their child before allowing them to play,” Martine also suggests. “And having systems such as
Family Zone in place can also give parents reasons why they recommend or don’t recommend certain games for certain ages, and parents can then make their own informed decisions.” “Once again, if a parent decides they are going to allow a child to play a game, especially if it is not recommended for their age, then they must ensure that they have gone to the settings areas of the game and made the games as safe and as private as they can.”
yourselves as parents is not affected by the filtering system.” POPULAR If you don’t use a filtering SOCIAL system, Martine recommends APPS going through every device TODAY and setting up as safely as you can. Instagram “Parents must go to Snapchat YouTube and Google and set Tom Tok (formally up the search engines for Misocal.ly) strict settings and must also WhatsApp go to every game and app YouTube their child uses to ensure GroupMe they are using it in the safest Kik Messenger way possible,” advises Tumblr Martine. “Obviously, this can Yubo be tedious and is never 100 HOW TO SET UP per cent foolproof so getting DEVICES a system to back this up is When there are multiple devices in a always recommended.” household and multiple ages of children, “It is also important to note that despite the requirements for safety and wellbeing filtering and monitoring, young people also vary depending on the individual’s stage of need to be learning the skills, the thinking development. “Systems such as Family Zone and the behaviours to keep themselves safe can allocate different levels of access to and to make good choices, so education and different ages. This also ensures the access ongoing conversation should always be part for the older members of the family and of the equation.”

If we manage to have constructive experiences online, to learn and be entertained in ways that still allow us to fulfill the many other elements of our lives, then screens can be a positive addition to family life. “If a child is still getting the right amount of sleep, coming to the dinner table without a fight, having time for all the other important elements of their lives then they are probably doing OK.” Martine suggests. “If these areas start to slip and we see warning signs of the devices taking over their lives, then it is imperative parents step in and make the necessary changes to avoid behaviours that can spiral out of control.” MARTINE OGLETHORPE O F T H E M O D E R N PA R E N T Martine is a digital educator, consultant and mother to five boys. Brace
yourself
Worried your child might need braces? Imola Foster from Gold Coast Dental and Denture Centre shares her tips on what to expect and what to look out for.
N
ot everyone is born with a perfect smile. Unfortunately for many children braces are inevitable. Thankfully, braces have come a long way in recent years, with smaller wires and clear options. Children can need braces for any number of reasons, for example, crooked, overlapping, overcrowded teeth, or a ‘bad bite’ (known as malocclusion). Malocclusion is when the top and bottom jaws are different sizes when they come together. Sometimes tooth and jaw problems can be caused by losing baby teeth too soon, accidents, or habits such as thumb sucking, or using a pacifier over the age of two. Often, your child’s dentist will be the first to notice a problem and recommend that you see an orthodontist (a dentist who specialises in correcting jaw and/or teeth alignment problems). The orthodontist will decide whether your child needs braces. There are ways to prevent or minimise the
need for braces from an early age. Seek advice from an oral myologist or oral health therapist, who is trained to assess and help with myofunctional therapy for young children’s oral development. Things such as early cessation of pacifier use, stopping thumb sucking, correcting oral postures, creating good oral habits, checking for open mouth posture and mouth breathing and providing therapy for these. Good jaw development is very important in preventing the need for braces and can be introduced from a very early age. Babies need to have correct oral stimulation so we encourage things like giving the child appropriate chewy toys. open cup drinking and chewing harder foods. As children grow, dental professionals and GPs can assess correct oral postures, good breathing patterns and most importantly, closed lip at rest and correct tongue position in the roof of the mouth, as these soft tissue functions affect our jaw and tooth development.
Fast Facts • Children should see an orthodontist once their permanent teeth start coming in, around age 7. • Most children get braces between 10 and 14 years old. The average time braces are worn is 18-24 months . • The average cost for braces is $5,000. • Orthodontic treatment is not covered under Medicare. However, it might be covered under private health insurance, depending on the policy.
