WELCOME

Y

ay, spring has sprung, is anyone else excited to see the mercury rising?! As we roll into summer, the first thing on many people’s minds is getting back in the water. Whether it’s nippers, surfing, or lazy Sundays at the beach, living in such close proximity to the ocean means that water activities are always on the agenda. But what if you can’t swim? I’m faced with this problem every day. As one of those unfortunate people that grew up in a big (English) city, I never learnt to swim as a child. Now I have a very profound fear of water which has stuck with me throughout my adult life. “Just jump in…” people often say, “you’ll get over your fear once you take lessons…” is another. I’ve tried, failed, tried and failed. (I know, I know, I’ll try again!) Because of this, ensuring my kids learn to swim to a high level is top of the activities list. As the biggest hypocrite ever, I’m parked on the side of the pool (with very

dry feet) coaxing them into the water to learn this vital lifesaving skill, knowing that you’ve got to do it early before they are too old and … end up like me! So, this issue swim is IN! We chat to the Centre Manager at leading swim school Kingswim, to find out the critical swim skills every child should learn. And to help get your kids into the pool, we have a comprehensive directory of all the swim schools across the region. As well as getting splashy, the experts at Kings Christian College explain why handwriting still matters and what you can do to help your child with this important skill. And we also sit down to chat with the mama behind the Burleigh Wagon to find out the inspiration behind this must-have beachside accessory. With love and sandy toes,

anctuary Early Learning Adventure has announced the opening of a new centre in Maudsland by the end of the year. With a popular centre already at Mermaid Waters, the childcare service specialises in purpose-built learning environments designed to provide the highest level of education, experiences and care. Lauren Hall, Owner of Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure said that the new centre will continue the existing philosophies and approach to early education. “Like our Mermaid Waters centre, Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Maudsland will be an exciting, heathy and inspiring place to be, with outdoor play spaces including mud kitchens, play forts and sensory paths,” Lauren said. “The new centre will also have a commercial style kitchen with its own chef, who will deliver daily fresh nutritious meals based on rotating seasonal menus.” “We believe that the childcare environment should be an extension of a child’s home environment, so we purposely design the centres to reflect this, providing children with a place to explore and learn in a natural elemental environment that encourages inclusive and creative play.” The educational programs incorporate the Early Years Learning Framework, STEAMbased educational experiences, sport, music and yoga sessions with a mindfulness and self-awareness focus. How long should children take swimming lessons?

We all know that swimming lessons are important. But as kids get older and schedules get busy, are our little ones quitting lessons too early?

sk any parent and swimming lessons are usually the first activity that kids undertake. From as early as 12 weeks old, babies can head into the pool to begin the very important process of learning to swim. But as kids get older and they start to pick up other extra-curricular activities, many parents wonder how long their kids need to take lessons for.

5 MINUTES WITH...

MGatt olinski We sit down to chat to local legend Matt Golinksi about produce, veggie gardens and the power of slow food for kids.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE SUNSHINE COAST? Having grown up on the Coast and lived here most of my life, it is definitely my home and I love every part of it. I’ve lived in other places but always come back to where my heart is. It’s hard to find anywhere in the world that has a better climate, a more relaxed lifestyle or a more diverse natural beauty than the Sunshine Coast. W H AT’S B E S T A B O U T LO C A L P R O D U C E? The key word when it comes to produce in this region is diversity. We’re lucky enough to have access to world class seafood fresh from the trawlers each day, as well as beef, pork, lamb, chicken and dairy from the hinterland, and so many different microclimates on the Coast means we have a greater variety of fruit and vegetables than probably any area in all of Australia. And what makes it the best is the pride and care taken by the producers themselves. WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PRODUCE? I have developed some great friendships with producers on the Coast over the past 30 years, and that network means I have direct access to a lot of the best ingredients available straight to the kitchen door. As a rule, the shorter the distance that your produce travels to get to you, the fresher and better quality it is, and the better the end product. Y O U A R E PA R T O F A C H A R I T Y T H AT H E L P S S C H O O L S B U I L D V E G G I E G A R D E N S ! T E L L U S A B O U T T H AT … Many years ago I was president of Slow Food Noosa, a convivium of a world-wide movement that advocates for good, clean, fair food. I had been to Melbourne and visited Stephanie Alexanders School Kitchen Garden in Collingwood, and saw what a powerful experience that was for the kids. I suggested to the group that this was something we should be involved in establishing within schools in our region. Slow Food Noosa has since helped lots of schools in the area set up gardens and bring kids on the coast that bit closer to understanding how food is grown and why it should be respected. Matt Golinski training Apprentice Chef Harry Jenner how to fillet the Ora King, a popular dish from View by Matt Golinski’s dinner menu. AMONGST ALL OF THIS, YOU ALSO RUN VIEW BY MAT T GOLINSK! Luckily I don’t have to do much running of the restaurant, head chef Andrew Wilcox does most of that! My involvement with View by Matt Golinski is largely a creative one. I get to experiment and come up with new dishes using all the bounty of seasonal, local ingredients that are available to us in Noosa. My favourite thing about my job at Peppers is working with the great team and showing them ingredients and techniques that they may not have seen before. We’ve all grown together so much over the past 18 months. AND THE RESTAURANT ALSO HAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL APPRENTICE PROGRAM! Yes! I love teaching apprentices, they are the next generation of cooks, and any chance I get I like to teach them something new and inspire them to want to learn. It’s a tough industry with a low retention rate for young chefs, so the more we can encourage them and make working in a kitchen a fun experience the more likely we are to keep them. W H AT ’S YO U R FAV O U R I T E T H I N G T O D O O N A D AY O F F ? I love just being with my girls when I get a break. I’m a keen distance and trail runner, so I do a lot of that, and I also love playing music with my friends. One thing I’ve noticed working with kids in school gardens is that if they grow radishes and turnips from a seed into something they can pick, they’ll eat them by the armful! Try getting a kid to eat a turnip normally and they’d scream the house down, so there’s something to be said for that connection to food. Hiding zucchinis and carrots in bolognese always seems to work too! S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2019

PARENTING ARRANGEMENTS AFTER SEPARATION

F

ollowing separation, there are four approaches that parents can take when setting up parenting arrangements for their children. Determining the best approach depends on several factors. If you have recently separated, answer the questions below to find out which approach might be suitable for your family. When answering, choose a single response that best describes your situation. 1. The communication between you and your ex is generally: A Very good: we communicate regularly and easily and agree about most parenting matters; B Good: we communicate when required and when we have differences, we work these out; C Poor: we communicate mainly by text or email and struggle to resolve our differences; D Non-existent: we are unable to communicate at all and disagree about everything. 2. The level of trust between you and your ex is generally: A Very High: we keep our word and uphold our agreements;

B High: there have been a few minor

issues with agreements not being followed; C Low: there have been times when core agreements have not been followed; D Very Low: there is no agreement to uphold. 3. Describe your preference regarding the structure for parenting arrangements: A Very Low: flexibility and being able to change arrangements as needed is a high priority; B Low: routine has a place but the ability to make changes to arrangements is more important; C High: routine is important and the ability to make changes should be limited; D Very High: consistency and certainty are very important. MOSTLY A’S: A verbal agreement may be the suitable arrangement for your family. MOSTLY B’S: A parenting plan may be the preferred pathway for your family . MOSTLY C’S: A consent order may be the best option for your family.

The benefits of

READING ALOUD TO YOUR KIDS

W

e all know that reading is critical to developing vocabulary, literacy skills and a vivid imagination. But did you know about the uniquely positive effects of reading aloud to kids?

IT BOOSTS BRAIN ACTIVITY

Listening to stories fires up different parts of the brain. Research has found that when children are frequently read to, the brain areas that support mental imagery and comprehension are highly engaged. This then helps with word recognition and literacy when they do start to learn to read.

IT IMPROVES LANGUAGE AND IMAGINATION

Reading books exposes children to a broader vocabulary than they typically hear in childdirected speech. Also, listening to speech (rather than reading it) is more linked to the emotional brain centres, sparking the imagination. This power of imagination may help children to transition more quickly to

independent reading of books without pictures.

IT IS MORE ENGAGING

Reading aloud offers a more engaged and inquisitive experience for the child, where they can ask stories and make further associations as you follow the narrative together.

IT SETS KIDS UP FOR A LIFETIME LOVE FOR READING

Exposing children to books at an early age teaches kids that reading is fun. Allow children to be adventurous and choose their own books; make the stories fun by using funny voices and actions.

IT’S QUALITY TIME

Learning aside, the biggest benefit of reading aloud to your child is that it’s a wonderful

opportunity for one-on-one cuddles and quality time with your little one. Helping you to bond, enhancing their social skills and sense of belonging, this face-to-face time will become their (and your!) favourite part of day. Not sure what to read? Pop along to your local library where they have a huge range of children’s books to borrow. Find your local branch at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/storytime.

Why handwriting matters

I

n an increasingly digital age, it’s easy to view handwriting as a dying art. Few people own fountain pens; most written correspondence is tapped directly into devices. In Finnish schools, children are no longer taught cursive (joined-up) writing but move straight to keyboards two years after learning their letters. Yet writing by hand is a complex craft that exercises visual, memory and fine-motor skills. It helps children remember spelling and develops their phonics skills. Older children recall facts and information better through the process of writing out notes by hand; brain imaging studies show that cursive writing, in particular, activates parts of the nervous system that typing does not. Our brains appear to work harder and process information at a deeper level when we write things down.

30

S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2019

WRITING FLUIDLY Children need to develop fluency in their handwriting in order to concentrate on what they are writing, rather than the act of writing itself. Without this automaticity, the process of writing will distract a child from their composition. Fluency is far more important than neatness. How can parents help their children develop this skill?

1. MAKE IT PERSONAL When your child first learns to write, start with the thing most personal to them – their name. Get them to trace, copy, decorate, paint it, join dot-to-dot letters and more, until it’s second nature. Then introduce family names, pet names – things that matter to them. Repetition is key. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

E D U C AT I O N

“Writing by hand is a complex craft that exercises visual, memory and fine-motor skills.” PROVIDE A VISUAL AID

STRENGTHEN LITTLE HANDS Use complimentary activities to strengthen hand muscles and develop fine motor skills, such as: • play dough • cutting • drawing • colouring-in • tracing • piano playing • sewing

Make sure your child has a visual aid when practising their writing, should they need a reminder. You can buy handy rulers or work mats with beginner’s letters on, or print a visual aid off the Internet. Your child’s school/preschool should also be able to provide you with something you can use at home.

USE ‘REAL LIFE’ SITUATIONS Try to weave writing tasks into your family’s day-to-day, for example: • Shopping lists • Writing birthday cards • Labelling • Filling in forms • A home chores roster for your children to sign when they have completed their tasks. • Jotting down family members’ choices before ordering at a café. • Use a family whiteboard to leave notes for each other • Experiment and have fun Let your child explore different media – coloured pens, markers and white board, chalk and blackboard, black paper with white pen, highlighters, paint. Kids love writing secret messages to each other with ‘magic ink’ pens, where the writing only showed up under ultraviolet light. Or go old school and get your child to write ‘invisible’ messages in white crayon on white paper. Paint over the paper with watercolour paint to reveal the message.

ENCOURAGE AND REWARD 2. PRACTICE LETTER SHAPES AND MOVEMENTS Focus on the movement used to create letters, rather than just copying and tracing. It is as important to know how letters are formed as what they look like. If a child gets into the habit of starting ‘p’s at the bottom or going clockwise with their ‘o’s they will find it difficult to write fluidly and will struggle to join up their writing later on. Demonstrate the direction the pencil moves to make a letter. For pre-schoolers and Preps, practice the drawing movements they need for writing: • anti-clockwise circles (practice for a, c, d, e, g, o, q) • clockwise circles (b, p) • straight lines, starting at the top (b, d, f, h, i, j, k, l, p, q, r, t) • diagonals (k, q, x, v, z) • curves and wiggles (s, k, g, y, f, j, m, n, r, u, w) • Practice letter shape and movement Don’t worry about size or neatness at this stage. Use different media to reinforce technique – draw in sand, shaving foam, steamy windows and flour, finger paint, use chalk, markers, crayons, pencils or try an app like Writing Wizard or Eggy Alphabet.

LITTLE AND OFTEN Better to practice five minutes every day than do a long 30-minute session. Learning to write can be boring and frustrating for many children, so do short ‘blasts’ of practice, for example: how many times can they write a specific letter or word in 30 seconds? Don’t focus on neatness so much as proper shape formation and movement. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

Perseverance is key to a child’s success in writing but learning to write can be an emotional rollercoaster for many children. Nurture a positive attitude to help develop their confidence. Praise and encourage but hold back on the superlatives. It’s not helpful to tell a child that everything s/he does is ‘wonderful’, ‘fantastic’, ‘amazing’. Be specific with your feedback – for example, “your ‘k’s look neat” doesn’t give your child any useful information, whereas “Your ‘k’s are at the same height as your other tall letters and you started the loop beautifully at the half-way point here. Well done!” is more constructive. Ask your child to assess their own work. Which part of their writing did they do well? Where did they struggle? Is there anything they would like some help with? Don’t compare their writing with others’. Do compare their writing with previous work they have done, where there is an improvement. It is important they recognise and acknowledge their achievements. Talk about the content of their writing, not just what it looks like. Show interest in their thoughts and ideas. Display good work somewhere prominent, such as on a wall or on the fridge, as a sign of your appreciation. If your child has worked very hard at their writing, consider rewarding them with a special novelty pen, ruler or notebook. Make sure they know you are rewarding them for their hard work rather than the writing itself. Aimed at making family outings as stress free as possible, the Burleigh Wagon has been making waves since mother of two Regan Merka launched her creation. We sat down with Regan to find out more.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH CONCEPT FOR THE WAGON? My husband and I moved from California almost three years ago with our two young daughters. We love the lifestyle Burleigh offers, however, like a lot of mums, I found getting out of the house to be a challenge. My girls were not keen to ride in the pram anymore, but I still needed an efficient and safe way to get everyone from A to B without all the fuss. So, I decided to create an outdoor alternative to a pram. The Burleigh Wagon was designed here on the Gold Coast by myself and the help of an engineer, with the intent to help families get out of the house more efficiently and with less stress. accessories catered towards a day of fun in the sun with the family. An alternative to a pram, we have created an easy and enjoyable way for the family to cruise around the beach, parks, markets vand more. Our product was born out of necessity for us. We tried a few wagons available on the market, but we found most were hard to steer, the wheels would get stuck, and we couldn’t fit our children in them AND everything else we needed for the day. Most of my trips consisted of the kids constantly asking for snacks and lugging around all their gear while they simultaneously asked me to pick them up. After being disappointed in what was available, I thought that there surely must be a better way! I have poured all my wants and needs as a mum into the Burleigh Wagon, ensuring

it’s a practical, easy to maneuver beach wagon that fits right into our busy outdoor lifestyle. Most importantly, the kids absolutely love it and want to get in it. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A FEW USES FOR THE WAGON? Currently, Australia has multiple collapsing wagons on the market. Yet none are designed to fit children to ride in AND sufficiently carry all your beach gear. Australia is a beach-loving country that enjoys a good celebration no matter what time of year. The Burleigh Wagon is the perfect companion to accompany any family to some of Australia’s most renowned beaches, gorgeous parks, local markets, hiking trails, and more. transport when the cup holder at the rear is removed. It seems simple, but a lot goes into making something like this work. In addition, our rear boot storage compartment was quite hard to achieve as the cavity under where the child sits are hollow, thus requiring additional structure.

converts to bench seating, pop open a cold beverage from your built-in ice chest, and turn up the volume on your wagon speakers to enjoy your day to the fullest. Also, we built it to last. It is durable, UV fade protected, warrantied for 12 months, and carefully designed to genuinely help enhance a family’s quality of experience when heading out for the afternoon with kids. IS IT JUST FOR FAMILIES WITH KIDS? No, the Burleigh Wagon is for anyone who loves the outdoors and needs a bit of assistance carrying all the gear! The Burleigh Wagon is amazing for outdoor activities such as fishing, surfing and camping. The surfboard rack doubles as a place to store fishing rods, the esky doubles as a tackle box, the snack tray doubles as a water/dog food dish for furry friends, the bench seating configuration is handy for seating at outdoor festivals, concerts, or simply a nice to spot to take in the view at your local beach or park. Older people would also benefit from owning a wagon as it’s easy to pull and gives you a seat wherever you are. Also, it allows the person to be hands-free and not have to physically carry any items. If you like to have

some drinks or a picnic on the weekend, then this wagon is also for you. It allows for a shady spot to sit and enjoy a cool beverage and a meal wherever you are. The tyres are off-road so feel free to bring it with you on any outdoor or festive occasions. YO U ’V E R E C E N T LY W O N AN AWARD, TELL US ABOUT THAT! Burleigh Wagon recently won the Highly Commended Innovation Award at the Gold Coast Girls in Business Awards 2019. We are so delighted to be recognised for the innovation of our product even before it has arrived. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START A BUSINESS OR LAUNCH A PRODUCT? We had quite a few challenges within the design phase of our product. Some of the unique features took us much longer to design than we anticipated. For example, the handle design took almost a month due to its folding mechanism and removable cup holder feature. This allows the wagon’s handle to fold flat over the top for easy

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE GOLD COAST? Wow, so much! The Gold Coast is a safe, picturesque and happening place. We love the mix of city and relaxed beach vibes that it offers. It truly is a place that has something for everyone. The people are friendly, the beaches are gorgeous and the places to go for adventure are endless! These are probably our top picks that we love to cruise to and frequent often. HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK / LIFE BALANCE? Going from a stay-at-home mum to a fulltime business owner has been a hard transition. I experience a lot of ‘mum guilt’ for not being as present as I used to be, not preparing as many home-cooked meals, and not picking them up straight after school like some of the other parents. But I’m learning to find a balance as I go along and hope to continue to implement the family and work life balance I want to achieve. burleighwagon.com.au K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M .
