I
t’s 4.30am. I’m in my PJs, having a sneaky cuppa and getting my head straight for the day ahead. It’s at times like this that the mama juggle never ceases to amaze me. And there’s never a time of year we feel it more than in the downhill slide into Christmas. The end-of-year wrap-ups and unbelievably cute Christmas concerts, combined with the craziness of planning for Christmas and getting organised for a well-deserved summer break, makes for one very frazzled mama. Like most Gold Coast families, we often turn to the local playground for a much-needed respite from the chaos. The kids can burn off steam whilst you grab a coffee and just breathe for a moment. So, this issue, we take our team of investigators (aka the kids) to Foreshore Coomera to find out what
it reeeally takes to build the perfect playspace. Of course, November also means we are well into the lead up to Christmas! #notstartedshoppingyet. If you are always chasing your tail like me, we have a HUGE Christmas gift guide, with something for everyone (yup, even some sneaky treats for Mum!). We’ve also got a round-up of the best Christmas activities across the region. If you are desperate for a break, check out our trip to the stunning Tangalooma Island Resort to experience all the kid-friendly fun on offer at this natural paradise. And, as always, we have all the latest news, reviews, events and more! With love and Christmas sparkles,

IS YOUR FAMILY SWIM READY THIS SEASON? With the weather warming up, swim safety messaging is increasing and for good reason. Despite ongoing aquatic education, devastatingly, drowning is still the number one cause of accidental death in children under five years. With that in mind, swim school leaders
at Rackley Swimming are encouraging all families to improve their year-round water safety awareness, especially in preparation for our Summer holiday season. “Swimming skills can help save lives, no matter the aquatic activity,” said Rackley Swimming General Manager, Cameron
Speechley. “That’s why our community message, ‘This is Swimming’, is so important. It highlights how any body of water – surfing, wading, splashing, jet skiing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, tyre rafting, even building sandcastles – should be considered to be as swimming, because if a child falls into the water while doing that activity, swimming skills would be required,” added Speechley. Rackley Swimming also suggests that yearround swimming is not only vital, but a smart decision. World first ‘Early Years Swimming’ research by Griffith University has shown that children exposed to regular swimming from a young age, can be six to fifteen months ahead of the normal population, when it comes to cognitive skills, problem solving, literacy, numeracy, as well as social ability, coordination, and following instructions. “Swimming is one of Australia’s favourite hobbies. Through regular swimming lessons and our booster Holiday Swim Programs, we want to help ensure all Aussie kids don’t just love it, but are safer swimmers no matter the season,” concluded Speechley. For more information, head to rackleyswimming.com.au

MENTAL HEALTH IS PRIORITY Kids Helpline says mental health issues and suicide-related thoughts accounted for more than one fifth of all calls made by children and young adults. The number of contacts made to Kids Helpline for the six months to July 2019 was 76,257, with 6,928 (19 per cent) related to suicide. Young people with a mental health issue may experience symptoms of depression or anxiety, emotional distress, psychotic thoughts, thoughts of suicide, or may engage in violent behaviours, disordered eating, substance abuse, or self-harming behaviours. “To cope with increasing counselling demand, Kids Helpline recently increased

the opening hours for web chat to 24/7. This has resulted in an additional 3,108 attempts and 1,723 contacts being made in the first half of this year. As a result, we are seeing longer counselling sessions and increasing numbers of children and young people who require regular support,” said yourtown CEO, Tracy Adams. “There should be no wrong doors to accessing help. We need to be working together towards early intervention, greater access to services and support for families need to be prioritised,” Tracey said. The only 24/7, free and confidential service for young people aged 5 to 25, Kids Helpline is 69 per cent self-funded by yourtown art union, donors and grants. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . The benefits of
SHARED READING
T
hough it can often be a struggle to find the time, curling up with your little one and sharing a book can be the best way to wrap up a day – for both parent and child. But as well as being a wonderful bonding time, shared reading has been linked with improved language and early reading skills. This positive difference is evident throughout their school years and beyond. But why would the simple act of reading together have such a positive impact on a child’s academic achievement? Firstly, there is strong evidence that much of children’s knowledge of sophisticated words is acquired during incidental learning, which occurs while they are being read to. Reading to children exposes them to words not often encountered in everyday life, broadening their vocabulary and general knowledge. This is particularly impactful during those first five years of life – a period of rapid language learning.
Secondly, when reading to children, parents often ask questions and engage in discussions about what’s happening in the story, exploring different outcomes and helping children develop problem-solving skills, which will then lead to enriched cognitive development. Thirdly, research suggests that experiences related to nursery rhymes, songs, games, and book reading can give young children access to ideas, concepts, and vocabulary that lead to higher levels of mathematics performance. You may notice that many children’s books include mathematics-related content, such as counting, measurements, geometry, growth and change. These enhanced cognitive skills not only lead to better literacy outcomes, and
enhanced mathematical comprehension, but great academic achievement in general. So there really is a great reason to read that extra story tonight! Not sure what to read? Pop along to your local library where they have a huge range of children’s books to borrow. Find your local branch at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/storytime

FOREVER ON THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT PLAYGROUND, WE SWING BY FORESHORE COOMERA’S FAB NEW EAGLE TREE PARK TO FIND OUT WHY IT’S BECOMING A PLAYGROUND FAVOURITE FOR GOLD COAST FAMILIES.
S
tockland is renowned for its creative parks and playgrounds and the new state-of-the-art Eagle Tree Park, located at the corner of Foreshore Street and Dales Way, is certainly no exception. Incorporating an array of innovative equipment including a twisting slide, swings and play tower, along with a basketball halfcourt, picnic shelters, barbecue facilities and a ‘kick around’ space, the park is already becoming a recreational hub for local families. David Laner, Queensland General Manager for Residential Communities at Stockland, said the opening of Eagle Tree Park marked the latest milestone for the community, which has recently welcomed its first residents, launched a 21-home display village and opened a waterside park complete with a jetty. “It is exciting to watch our vision for Foreshore Coomera rapidly becoming a reality, with our newest park a valuable addition to the infrastructure we are putting in place to foster active and heathy lifestyles,’’ Mr Laner said. “Sports and an active lifestyle are at the core of Foreshore Coomera with more than half of the community dedicated to open space and conservation, and additional planned amenities including bike and walking trails.” Surrounded by nature, the community makes the most of its location bordered by the Coomera River and Oxley Creek, including 2.5 kilometres of river frontage and more K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . IN THE HEART OF COOMERA than 51 hectares of conservation areas and open space – providing the perfect setting for relaxed family living. Foreshore Jetty Park is another park that opened within the community earlier this year. In an idyllic setting on the banks of the Coomera River, under a canopy of mature shade trees, Foreshore Jetty Park provides the perfect backdrop for family barbecues and get-togethers as well as opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy kayaking and fishing. “Foreshore Jetty Park features 600 metres of walking and cycling trails along the riverbank, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the natural setting as they exercise,” said David. “It also makes the most of the relaxed coastal lifestyle and the stunning waterside setting on offer at Foreshore Coomera.”
A custom-designed covered timber jetty at the park offers direct access to Coomera River, providing a launch pontoon for kayaks, as well as an excellent vantage point for fishing. Family picnics are also well catered for at Foreshore Jetty Park, with a picnic shelter, barbecue facilities, a unisex toilet, a drinking fountain and tap.
More than play Foreshore is also close to a wide range of education hubs, from childcare centres to schools, including the adjacent $64 million Foxwell State Secondary College, which is opening in 2020. “The state-of-the-art high school, located on Foxwell Road, will be able to cater for up to 250 Year 7 students on day one of the school year next year, with stage one of development N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2019

The community is also well situated for shopping with outstanding retail, dining and entertainment options provided by the Coomera East Shopping Centre, located directly adjacent to the community, and the $470 million Westfield Coomera just two kilometres away. It is also close to the popular dining and cafe precincts at Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island. “Being just a short drive to Coomera Train Station and easy access to the M1 Motorway, Foreshore Coomera is steadily growing in popularity amongst local families looking for a family friendly community.” “Offering parks, 51 hectares of conservation area, yet located only 26 kilometres from the Gold Coast CBD, Foreshore is attracting a wide range of new home buyers looking for a relaxed waterside lifestyle surrounded by nature,” said David. “Families are an integral part of our communities. They help lay the foundations for a strong, connected community containing a diverse mix of buyers of all ages and backgrounds.” “Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, the community will ultimately feature 9.5 kilometres of walking and cycling trails, with much of it set alongside nature,” said David. “So far, approximately 6.5 kilometres of trails have been constructed, allowing residents of all ages to wind their way through leafy parkland as well and the view along 600 metres of river banks.”

DEAR M UM MY...
In the lead up to the new school year, separation anxiety is a common concern. Edge Early Learning takes us inside a child’s day, and shares tips on what you can do to help. Dear Mummy, I know I cry at kindy drop off, and seem really frightened about being separated from you. I’m scared, excited and a hundred other words that I don’t even know yet. I have weird butterflies in my tummy that make me feel strange. But, please don’t be sad! As soon as you are gone, and Miss Ellie gives me a big hug, I feel safe and ready to explore. I start the day with my friends, we chat to each other whilst making the BIGGEST sandcastle. Mummy, you’d be so proud! Sometimes I get frustrated when the other kids take my spade, but Miss Ellie helps us to work it out together so we can all share. After morning tea, it’s time for art activities. We explore the garden for things to make collages. We paint pictures, we get messy. We stick, we colour, we create. I don’t know where the time goes, because all too quickly it’s lunchtime – yum! You’ll be amazed at the foods I try at kindy, we have something different every day! There’s curry, tacos, vegetarian pasta, the yummiest wraps. You’d love it, I know

how much you like going out to places where other people cook food and bring it to you. Rest time comes and I’m exhausted. Though I’m not sleeping in my own bed, the kindy bed feels safe and snuggly, and Miss Ellie is always there to give us a pat or a cuddle. They aren’t as good as your sleepytime hugs, but they still feel nice. The afternoon goes by in a blur, but they are always fun. Miss Ellie has a different activity every day. We play alphabet and number games. The teachers use the words ‘learning intentions’ and ‘learning outcomes’ when talking to each other. I think that is grown-up speak for having LOTS of fun in lots of different ways. So, Mummy… I know you only see me crying, and you worry about me all day. But the butterflies go away and I have the BEST day at kindy – learning, making friends, and beginning to find my place in the world. And, my favourite bit? Your great big hug at the end of the day. Love from, Ollie x

Types of Parenting Arrangements FOLLOWING SEPARATION
F
ollowing a separation, having the right parenting arrangement in place provides parents and children with a greater assurance and confidence for the future. There are several types of arrangements available. It is important to understand the difference to choose what is right for you. A verbal arrangement is an undocumented agreement between separated parents regarding where children will live and arrangements for them to spend time with the other parent. The agreement can also cover things such as education, health and religious arrangements for the children. A verbal arrangement is suitable for separated parents who have good communication and a good level of trust. A parenting plan is a written agreement regarding matters for the children that is dated and signed by separated parents. Parenting plans work best for families who have a reasonable level of communication and fair degree of trust in their relationship. A consent parenting order is where separated parents reach agreement about parenting matters but then make an application to the Court to have the agreement recognised as a formal court order. Separated parents who have difficulties communicating typically benefit from a consent parenting order. In some situations, separated parents may be unable to agree about future parenting matters, in which case it may be necessary to apply for a parenting order. A parenting order is a decision about parenting matters for the children that has been made by the Court. The parenting order will cover who makes decisions about the welfare of the children and where
they live. When making a parenting order the Court will consider different factors relating to what is in the children’s best interests and this may be different to what the parents think is in the children’s best interests. Flexibility

Reflecting on kindergarten and
PREPARING FOR BIG SCHOOL
A
s the end of the year gets closer the next step in a child’s learning journey is on the minds of many families. Transition to ‘big school’ has already begun as children share the name of their new school with each other and start to envisage their next step. Transition statements are being written, graduation has been planned and those vital end of year preparations are well under way. This is all part of the process – the opportunity for a farewell to bring the year to a close and to get ready for what lies ahead. The Soaring Seagulls at Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure have had a very busy year so far. There is something quite wonderful about the kindergarten year, setting those early learning foundations before children venture off to new horizons. January doesn’t seem that long ago, when the little learners started their kindy journey – a little bit shy and not quite sure on what was in store, but ready and excited for the year ahead. But oh, how they have grown! This growth has happened in every sense, as they now enter the room each morning as confident and independent learners. Everyone in a child’s life has played a vital part in this development throughout the year – with encouragement and assistance from educators, love and support from home and blossoming friendships that will hopefully continue well into school. Starting Prep is such an important milestone in the lives of all families, many parents ask what they can expect and how they can be ready? It is such a big step; how can we aim to get it right? Talk to your kindy teacher if you have concerns, they know your child and can advise on strategies to ease the transition. Visit the school, walk past it on the weekend so they know the route. Connect with friends during the summer break that are going to the same school, so your child has existing friendships on their first day.
HERE ARE AREAS OF SCHOOL READINESS THAT SANCTUARY EARLY LEARNING ADVENTURE HAS BEEN FOCUSING ON THROUGHOUT THE 2019 KINDERGARTEN YEAR. 1.
Recognising their name. This will be helpful in their prep classroom and managing their own independence which will be vital once they are in a full classroom of new faces. 2.
Strengthening social skills. Something that has been addressed all year is the high importance of social skills valuing independence, starting to empathise and really listen to their friends and teachers. Independence skills are vital to the children once they are at Prep – looking after their hat, finding their water bottle and managing their fruit breaks and lunchtimes. 3.
A love of reading. Fostering a love of being read to and enjoying books daily will continue to embed the reading behaviour already happening in pre-school.
