W
ow, 2020! Can you believe it? When I was a child, 2020 sounded so futuristic. I imagined there would be flying cars, we’d have cities on the moon and wear mad fluoro clothes. In reality, I don’t feel that different from the child I was. Yes, the world has changed, but not nearly as fantastically as I’d envisaged. To find out how my kids imagined their future, I recently asked them what they thought 2050 would look like. Surprisingly it was much the same as my childhood vision: flying cars (yes please!), holidays to space (hmm, sounds cold), and phones implanted inside your head (gosh, no thanks). Diving straight into the future and the new school year, this issue we are all about getting back to school! We get some invaluable tips from King’s Christian College on preparing the kids
for their first day of school. We also take a look at play-based learning in early childcare, to find out what this really means for our littlest ones. And some of the region’s best educators share their wisdom on how we can help to support every child to thrive this year. Need a lunchbox revival in 2020? We kick your lunchboxes up a gear this year with some awesome recipes and tips from Australia’s legendary school lunchbox dad, George Georgievski. And as always, we have the region’s best family friendly events and activities, news, back to school goodies, books and movie reviews, and much, much more. Wishing you a fabulous 2020!

Summer holiday fun in the sun ENJOY THE WATER ANYWHERE
A
s the school holidays are well underway, Queenland families are planning their getaways to the beach, river or pool to cool down by the water. Marina Burley, Kingswim Carindale Centre Manager and mum of three says while most people go to the beach, her family pack up, leave the city and go bush. “We love spending time outdoors as a family. We ride motorbikes, go craybobbing, bushwalking and of course if there’s water, go for a swim.” Tori Hornsveld, Kingswim Robina Centre Manager says her top tip for summer is to never swim alone and always make sure to slip, slop, slap in the heat. “My favourite beach would have to be Burleigh Heads, it’s great for swimming and having a BBQ or picnic too!” While everyone plans different summer holidays, there’s one thing they all have in common, swimming and the need for water safety. To ensure the littlest member of the family can join in on the summer fun, and the biggest member of the family has peace of mind, Kingswim has compiled its tips for a safe and fun summer. • L E S S O N S : Try to complete at least one full term of lessons before any swimming trips. If not possible, try Kingswim’s Fast Track to catch up and refresh skills before going away.

• S K I L L L E V E L : Ask your child’s teacher for an update on their swim skill level before going on holidays and if there’s anything you can practise while away. • C O N F I D E N C E : Check in with your child about their confidence levels in the water and refresh water safety tips specific to your holiday destination; the beach, a pool or river. • S U P P O R T : If your child lacks confidence in the water, be supportive and encouraging to ensure you can both have fun and enjoy the water together. • C O M M U N I C A T I O N : Let friends and family know your child’s ability. This will help children enjoy the water within their limits and means extra eyes watching out for safety and signs of trouble. FEAST
zHarvest has recently launched a new primary education program, aimed at inspiring kids to eat healthily, waste less and become change makers in their local community. Titled FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training), the program is designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food! FEAST gets kids immersed in handson cooking activities in the classroom (no kitchen required). Students are tasked with exploring and designing their own recipes for a ‘School Cookbook’ to encourage healthy eating and help prevent food waste,

new school readiness service has opened on the Gold Coast, providing carefully curated classes to expose children to the many skills and concepts required for a smooth transition into their first year of school. “At Step to Prep, our classes focus on pre-literacy, pre-numeracy, fine motor, health and well-being as well as a reading ready program,” explained Jo Jackson, founder and teacher at Step to Prep. “We work closely and conscientiously with each individual child to ensure they have the tools, confidence and the understanding of what to expect when they begin school.” As a qualified teacher, Jo saw a
while educating and engaging their community. One child in every classroom goes to bed or school hungry every day. Nationally, one in four children are overweight or obese and many do not eat enough fresh fruit and veg. This affects how they learn at school and can lead to poor physical and mental health. Half of all food waste comes from the home, so the kids and their families can all be part of the solution. Designed for Years 5 and 6, the FEAST program runs for 7-10 weeks and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum STEM Learning Areas. ozharvest.org/feast

need to bridge the gap between the ‘kindy’ and school environment. “I increasingly saw a disparity between the skills students had and what was being expected of them when entering Prep,” Jo explained. “These classes are perfect for children who are in their final year before beginning school, helping them to build confidence, selfesteem and a love for learning.” The small, private sessions are designed to complement their current kindy program or perhaps as an alternative for those children who do not attend kindy and need something engaging as they grow older. Classes are for 3-4 and 4-5-years.

reparing for a new school year is exciting! To help your child feel confident when they walk through the school gate, it is important to assist them to be prepared. • Re-establish school day routines. Maintain consistent waking and going to bed-times, and times for homework, sport and relaxation. • Create a timetable together for your child to use to prepare for each day, including which days sport items or music instruments are needed and which days assessment items are due. Include times allocated for homework, sport commitments and relaxation time. Use pictures or symbols for younger children. • Establish a daily reading routine. This may be included in homework time or you may choose to do some reading in the morning before school. • Establish a daily numeracy routine. Encourage your child to spend five minutes skip counting in a variety of sequences and patterns, recalling times tables,

addition and subtraction facts or solving simple word problems. • Help your child set three or four personal goals to work towards during the term. These may be focused on personal habits, learning achievements and/or extra curricular areas such as sport or music. For younger children, break goals into achievable daily or weekly steps. • Encourage your child to develop personal responsibility through packing their own bag, assisting with the organisation of their lunchbox and helping with chores around the home. By being part of these responsibilities, your child will develop their selfefficacy and strengthen their resilience and persistence. • Help your child to focus on strengthening their growth mindset. Eliminate ‘I can’t’ from your family’s vocabulary and replace it with ‘I will keep trying’ and ‘I will try a different way to reach my goal’. Visit sthildas.qld.edu.au for more information.

anuary means many children are starting childcare or kindy for the first time. As unknown territory for both the child and the parents, it can be an exciting yet nervous time! To help your child adjust, make sure you’ve shared a couple of orientation sessions prior to your first day. These sessions are designed for both parent and child to get to know the daily routine at the centre and to make your first day easier. Different centres will provide different items, so check with your own service ahead of time as to what they will provide for your child each day. If you are enrolling at Edge Early Learning, all nappies, wipes, sunscreen and nutritious meals are provided and bedding kits are available to purchase, so all you need to pack is a spare change of clothes. As centre programmes can vary, look for a centre with a philosophy that fits well with your own values. Some may focus on outdoor learning, whilst others may prefer a traditional approach. Edge Early Learning offers a nurturing and open environment, where exploration is encouraged. Aligning perfectly with the Early Years Learning Framework, we believe this inquiry-based approach is best for our little learners. And most importantly, we have fun! Our educators have welcomed many first-time learners into the classroom and are experts in ensuring every child has the best first day on this exciting adventure! Remember, you are never too young to start school! Early education can give your child the edge to succeed when they reach ‘big school’. Edge Early Learning provides quality care and education for children from six weeks to school age, with the convenience of long day care hours. To find an Edge Early Learning centre near you, visit www.edgeearlylearning.com.au and book a centre tour.

Countdown to
STARTING SCHOOL KING’S CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SHARES THEIR TIPS TO HELP YOU AND YOUR CHILD PREPARE FOR THIS EXCITING NEW ADVENTURE.
Start getting into a routine The school day can seem very long for Preppies, with much more time spent listening and concentrating than in Pre-Prep. They will need a good night’s sleep (aim for 11 to 12 hours), a decent breakfast, and healthy snacks and lunch to help them get through their school day. Now is the time to establish early bedtimes and practise getting your child up at the time they will need to rise on a school day. Get them used to eating a good breakfast, morning tea and lunch at regular times rather than snacking throughout the day. Make sure that you read to them every day, perhaps as part of the bedtime routine. Also, ensure that any screen time ends at least an hour before bedtime so that your child is able to unwind.

VISIT THE SCHOOL
Drive/walk to the school with your child to familiarise them with what will be their daily journey. Show them where they will enter and where you will pick them up. Check how long it takes you to travel to the school (allow extra time for heavy traffic).
Prepare them mentally and emotionally • Count down the days until school on a calendar with your child and count the number of sleeps till their big day. • Talk to your child about their expectations – their excitement and their concerns. Be positive and encouraging. • Read books about starting school, such as ‘Starting School’ by Janet and Allen Ahlberg or ‘I Am Too Absolutely Small For School’ by Lauren Child.
Arrange play dates with other children starting at the same school If you don’t yet know any other children attending Prep with your child, make sure they have some play dates with other children their own age in the run up to starting school.
Practise putting on school uniform Buttons, laces, socks and other fiddly bits can be a challenge for little ones, so spend some time letting them practice dressing (and undressing) themselves in their school uniform. Ensure they can go to the toilet independently in the unfamiliar clothes. Kids who are used to running around in sandals or thongs, may find a full day in socks and shoes a strange experience, so make sure they spend some time wearing them around the house to adjust.
Label everything Ensure your child’s clothes and belongings have their name on them. That includes bags, lunch boxes, drinks bottles and hats. If you have room inside your child’s hat, put your mobile telephone number next to your child’s name. This helps to identify and return lost hats more quickly.

J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y 2020
Play with the school bag
Have a practise run
Help develop your child’s independence. Have fun packing the school bag, play with lunch boxes and containers – practise taking off lids and putting them on again and go for a walk with the bag on, so that your child gets used to carrying it.
A few days before your child starts school, have a ‘get ready for school’ practise run. Practise getting up, dressed, fed and packed in time for school and then do the journey there and back. Not only will this prepare your child but it will reveal any issues that may slow you down on a school day, for example breakfast spilt on uniform (maybe eat breakfast in pyjamas next time?) or lunch taking longer than expected to prepare and pack.
Prepare your child for school activities • Run, jump, skip, hop, catch and throw balls together • Do activities requiring fine motor skills – drawing, cutting and modelling • Count, sort and match objects – buttons, socks and lollies • Do some baking together • Read to your child
Get online Familiarise yourself with your school’s website, parent apps and social media platforms – they will be a vital source of information for you over the coming weeks, months and years. Some schools have private Facebook groups for parents of each school year level so that parents can arrange play dates, flag lost uniform items, discuss school issues and more. Contact your child’s school to see what online forums are available for parents of the new intake.
Confirm school start and end times It might sound obvious, but be sure to check your child’s school start day and time. The Prep start and end times may differ slightly from the rest of the school. Ensure you know where you are taking your child and picking them up from and what to do if you are late – put all necessary contact numbers into your mobile phone.
On the big day • Ensure your child has gone to bed early the night before. Have uniform, hat and bag ready. • Include emergency spare underwear/ clothes and a plastic bag in your child’s school bag in case of accidents. • Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and extra time for travel – school traffic is always busiest on the first day of school. • Give your child a good breakfast and prepare a healthy packed lunch and snack for morning tea. Most schools do not have fridges to store lunch boxes, so put an ice block in with your child’s lunch to keep things cool. Don’t forget a water bottle! • Make sure you apply sunscreen to your child. • Accompany your child to their classroom, introduce yourself to the teacher, see where your child is sitting, be positive and enthusiastic. Hug your child, tell them they are going to have a fantastic day and you can’t wait to hear all about it when you collect them in the afternoon, kiss them goodbye and LEAVE. Some children will get upset and experience separation anxiety but it is important not to linger and make the situation more difficult. • Don’t forget your camera and tissues! WHAT IS PL AY-BASED LEARNING? Do the children ‘just play’ all day at pre-school? There’s much more to this play than you think.
I
f you have a child in early education, you have undoubtedly come across the phrase ‘play-based learning’. Many parents hear this and initially become concerned that it means there is no structure in their child’s learning environment. Children, however, thrive in a play-based learning environment, where skilled educators can provide a curriculum that allows children to follow their interests.
W H AT I S P L AY-B A S E D LEARNING?
Children are naturally motivated to play. Children are also individuals with very different interests. A play-based program builds on this motivation and the children’s individual interests, using play as a context for learning and exploration. Children can experiment, discover and solve problems in fun and hands-on ways. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

of children who love playing in the mud pit and would stay there all day if they could. They are not interested in learning to write their name and sitting down at the writing table is not something they want to do. Our educators acknowledge their interest of the mud pit and invite them to help with planting and digging in the garden. The educator will introduce concepts that include hypothesising, measuring, writing, sharing, turn taking, mathematics, sustainability and a long-term project that may go on for months, which promotes sustained shared thinking.
HOW DO EDUCATORS SUPPORT CHILDREN’S PL AY?
We believe that children require extended periods of uninterrupted play. Our educators make decisions throughout the day and adjust their routines to enable children to either continue with their play or allow them to return to their play later in the day. Respect is always demonstrated when we interrupt children’s play. For example, a child’s ‘work in progress’ is left out or stored safely so they can return to their play after lunch or rest time.

We have lived through a story of freedom, fun, friends, challenge and adventure, only to see this story step into an alternate universe where the complete opposite is now the dominant narrative unfolding for children in modern neighbourhoods.. After dedicating 12 months of exploring ‘Neighbourhood Play’ in depth, walking neighbourhoods with residents, and talking with over 240 parents and children – after discussing emerging neighbourhood play themes with sociologists, psychologists, town planners, pediatricians, parenting experts and many others – we have honed our knowledge and can now, with unfortunate certainty, share with you some very alarming facts that point towards a negative trajectory not only for children, but for the health of the nation. CHEW ON THIS!
W
ith Christmas over and a new school year starting, it’s that time of year where many families make new year’s resolutions. Better dental habits for our children is often one of the most common resolutions. For those children that don’t like certain toothpastes or having a toothbrush or floss placed in their mouth, brushing and flossing children’s teeth can be a battle. But did you know that dental care starts from the day we are born? Or that the most important factors to our dental health are our diet and the oral habits that were instilled early on? In fact, proper dental nutrition is more important than even brushing and flossing! Teeth are living organs and require proper nutrition to regenerate and maintain healthy levels of enamel and dentin. Without proper nutrition, your teeth will struggle to stay intact. Appropriate eating and drinking skills affect so much of your baby’s health and development, and most of these are learnt in the first two years of life. What topics should be covered in
POST SEPARATION PARENTING ARRANGEMENTS?
T
here are several topics that should be included in any post separation parenting arrangement, regardless of whether the parenting arrangement is structured as a verbal arrangement, parenting plan, consent order or court order.
Decision making A post separation parenting arrangement should outline how major long-term decisions will be made for the children, namely, whether decisions will be made jointly by the parents or whether one parent will make the decisions and then inform the other parent.
Parental communication Children should not be used as messengers between the parents. Instead, parenting arrangements should provide for a standard means of communication between the parents. Some options include email, text, phone or a communication app. It is also wise for parenting arrangements to include a process for dispute resolution, in case an issue arises that cannot be resolved. Schedules for the children
other family members or friends facilitating changeover.
A schedule setting out how the children spend time with each parent is an essential part of any parenting arrangement. A consistent schedule can be set up to apply through both the school terms and school holidays or different schedules may be arranged. Any schedule that is set up should be age appropriate and have the children’s best interests at heart.
Miscellaneous
Special occasions Any parenting arrangement should include details about how the children will share their time with each parent on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other special occasions.
Changeovers and transitions To avoid disputes and confusion parenting arrangements should cover how the children transition between each household. These arrangements should include the day and time of the changeover, the location of changeover and consent for
There are a range of other topics that can be included in parenting arrangements such as extracurricular activities, passports and travel.
Finances Generally, financial support of the children is dealt with separately from parenting arrangements. Parents who have covered details of financial support for the children in parenting arrangements should seek advice from a family lawyer about how to formalise these arrangements. RECIPE
LUNCHBOX EXPRESS Back to school means back to lunchboxes! Love them or hate them, packing a healthy lunchbox that the kids will eat is a critical part of each day. Never fear, Australia’s School Lunchbox Dad, George Georgievski, is here to help!
CHEESY CHICKEN NUGGETS Makes 8–10 Getting the kids to shape their own nuggets means they’re more likely to actually eat them. These can be eaten freshly baked and are great in lunchboxes too. INGREDIENTS
1 cooked chicken breast, sliced (or use cooked lamb or beef) ½ cup grated cheddar 3 slices of wholemeal bread (or 3 cups roughly chopped bread offcuts) Oil spray, for greasing (optional) 2 tablespoons tomato sauce or barbecue sauce METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C or your air-fryer
on medium heat.
2. In a blender or
food processor, blitz the chicken, cheese and bread for about 30 seconds until the ingredients are well combined.
Lunchbox Secrets GET THE KIDS INVOLVED
Whether it’s cooking, prepping, assembling or even choosing their own fruit at the supermarket, the more I get my girls involved, the more they embrace their lunches. They love helping me come up with fun names for my creations too. 4. If cooking the nuggets in the oven, pop 3. Transfer to a bowl and shape tablespoons of
the mixture into nuggets. You can even get fancy and use cookie cutters to create some awesome shapes.

them on a greased baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes. Alternatively, drop them in the air-fryer for 5–6 minutes. 5. While the nuggets are cooking, divide the sauce among dipping bowls, then wait for the magic morsels to come out of the oven.
STICK TO BITE-SIZED PORTIONS
Kids are too busy to mess around with large portions – they just want to play. A mixture of bite-sized food is easier to grab and go!

RECIPE
ROB’S DATE & COCONUT BITES Makes 9 These yummy two-ingredient bites make an excellent treat to pop in school lunchboxes, as they contain no added sugar. Try adding a little cocoa powder for a chocolaty taste. These keep well in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. INGREDIENTS
10 dates, pitted (or use dried apricots, which are just as yummy) ⅓ cup desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling METHOD 1. Place the dates and desiccated coconut in a
blender and blitz until everything looks mushy and really sticky. 2. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and roll teaspoons of the mixture into nine balls. 3. Roll the balls in a heap of desiccated coconut and ensure they’re evenly coated – the idea is for all the stickiness to be covered by the coconut. 4. Pop them in the fridge for 1 hour until set.
GeorgTe ´o’sp Tips GET FAMILIAR
Start using the lunchbox a month or so before your kid starts school. That way they’ll be familiar with it by the time school rolls around and it won’t be yet another new thing to get used to. HAVE FUN
Channel your inner creativity through your kids’ lunchboxes! An interesting and varied lunchbox is fun for your kids too, and means they’re much more likely to eat what’s inside. KEEP IT BALANCED AND HEALTHY
In each lunchbox, I make sure there is a portion of protein, some veggies, dairy, fruit and a healthy treat. I prefer to include sugar-free treats as I don’t understand treats being automatically associated with sugar. Why reward your kids with something that’s not good for them? REMEMBER THE NUMBER FIVE
Make sure you include five fresh items (three veggies and two fruits) in every lunchbox. This is essential nutrition for growing bodies! PREP IN ADVANCE
I like to be inspired in the moment when making lunches, but I still do some prep in advance to make life easier. I make sure all my fruit and veggies are washed, then it’s just a quick chop and assemble and we’re good to go. I also make some things ahead of time. MAKE IT VISUALLY EXCITING
Picky eaters are more likely to try something new if it looks cool. And if you change up the presentation, they will never get bored. For example, I present like to find different ways to present sandwiches.
