SUNSHINE COAST - BRISBANE - GOLD COAST

Y

ay… summer is just around the corner! After the shemozzle of this year, time rolls on and the silly season is already upon us. Sadly, Christmas may look a little different this year—with Santa on Zoom, socially distanced festivities and much smaller gatherings. But that’s no reason to lose the magic of Christmas. In fact, I’m taking it as the perfect excuse for excessive sparkles and over-the-top Christmas lights for KOTC HQ this year! (Make sure you follow our social pages for plenty of socially-distanced silliness over the next two months!) One thing that will never change about a Queensland summer is our love for the water. And living such an aquatic lifestyle, water safety and learning swimming skills is top of the priority list for our kids. Therefore, this issue we’ve called in the experts from Rackley Swimming to find out about the essentials of getting back

into the pool and preparing for a watersafe summer, particularly after the long hiatus of lockdown. And let’s not forget Christmas! We have a huge Christmas Gift Guide with gorgeous locally made products, games, books and more for the whole family. Plus, we have a round up of summer activities for families—both online and IRL (in real life). Need a break? With Queensland families staying local for the summer (why would we go anywhere else?!), we explore the serenity of the region’s best farmstays and how these secret escapes are providing the perfect respite from city life for families. Wishing you a fabulous Christmas, and I’ll see you in 2021!

WELLBEING

Christmas. A GOOD TIME TO RESET AND LOOK AFTER YOU.

L

et's be honest, 2020 has been quite a year. And as it comes to an end, it's important to reflect on how it affected your family and how it may continue to affect your family. We want to go into this time of the year proactively because we know if we reflect and think about what is going on, we can handle things better. Reflection is so important for us, as parents, but also for our children. It puts us in a space where we can answer the questions that they may have, understand why we seem to be frustrated, or why we are not as present as we wish we were. Importantly, it gives us space to look at proactively putting things in place, so we are what we need to be for our children. How is your family travelling as we enter this period? We know that there may be families still separated by border restrictions. Are you feeling disconnected from your family? It may be helpful to book in some extra time to connect with your family members in the lead up to Christmas. There have also been huge financial flow-on implications from COVID-19. Are you feeling this pressure? How is this flowing on to your little people? How do we have these conversations with our children?

One of the patterns we see at Parentline is a decrease in parents reaching out for help over school holiday periods. This is particularly evident during the summer/Christmas period. It makes sense on one hand as our children are home. This can be a challenge to prioritise yourself or to have potentially difficult conversations when they are within earshot. It is also a worry as this is a time when parents generally need more support, not less. If you are concerned about little ones listening, you can always go online to parentline.com.au and chat to a counsellor via WebChat. It is so important to prioritise yourself, even when it may not feel like the right time. Sometimes it may feel selfish but it is the least selfish thing you can do for your family. We know that children do better when parents feel supported. If you feel like you need help preparing for this period, if you feel exhausted or your capacity is low after the tough year that we've had, give us a call and let us help. Let us listen. Sometimes you may have a specific query about your child/family or you may just be feeling overwhelmed. It does not matter the reason, we can help you reset after such a hard year which will give you more capacity to support your kids.

A SAFE PLACE TO

espite all the health restrictions, kids are still having birthdays. But finding a safe place to host a birthday party at the moment can be tricky. Now, families can design their own party at Kids Zone, with private use of the Kids Zone facility. The unique venue located within the Gold Coast Performance Centre includes a two-storey playground, flying fox, gadget corner and jumping castle. There is also a babies area available to hire for a small additional cost. Gold Coast Mum Amy said, “It was the perfect place for a party! The kids had a blast in the playground, we felt safe as we had the whole place to ourselves. And being an air-conditioned indoor playground, it could go ahead no matter what the weather outside – taking all the stress and uncertainty away. We could bring our own food and decorations too, which really kept the costs down.” Kids Zone Manager Sharon said, “We want kids to still be able to have and enjoy birthday parties. With exclusive use of the Kids Zone, we can ensure it is a safe place to party – with maximum fun and minimum cost to families.”

LEARN TO SWIM: AS VITAL AS ABC

Wondering whether you really need to put your child through swimming lessons? We chat to Cameron Speechley, Rackley Swimming’s General Manager, to find out why learning to swim is such a critical part of childhood. WHY ARE SWIMMING LESSONS SO IMPORTANT FOR QLD KIDS? Young or old, Aussies share a love for the water. Despite this, developing swimming skills is something we all need to work on from a young age. Swimming is about so much more than laps and solitary sessions. It is about social interaction, swim races, safety skills, leisure, pool parties, and even the odd bomb dive. And, yes, if you want to represent your school, club or country—a few intensive training sessions might be a good idea too! We believe swimming is a rite of passage for all Australians, and an activity anyone can do—even babies. That is why we offer

20

N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2020

free Baby Splash lessons to help introduce our youngest family members to the water. WHAT AGE SHOULD KIDS START SWIMMING LESSONS, AND WHAT LEVEL SHOULD THEY CONTINUE TO? The process of learning to swim can start from a baby’s very first bath. The bath helps them to become accustomed to the feeling of water. We believe children should begin swimming lessons from two months old, teaching them water confidence which is the foundation to developing strong water safety skills. All kids learn at different rates and progress often depends on the exposure a

child has to various aquatic environments. Swim Australia recommends that children should be able to swim 400 metres continuously before ceasing swimming lessons. While we support Swim Australia’s recommendations, we also recommend a child should continue in swimming lessons until they can swim 1km, as this gives them the endurance they need to cope with a rip at the beach. Swimming is more than a pastime, it’s one of the few children’s activities that can save their life! WHY SHOULD KIDS CONTINUE LESSONS THROUGH WINTER? Year-round swimming is vital. Continuing K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

LEARN TO SWIM

We have been at Rackley Swimming Miami since our almost five-year-old was a young baby. The dedicated team are the reason we travel over 25km to attend this swim school every week. We love their energy, their supportive environment and the way they encourage each child to achieve their goals and dreams. —VICTORIA

lessons across the year helps children build confidence and improve upon their skill level. Children who stop swimming lessons during winter will often experience skill stagnation or ‘winter regression’ and their skills can take time to recover when they do return to the pool. Also, swimming lessons are an integral part of the weekly family routine. Children look forward to interacting with their classmates and teachers each week. We have seen many families excited and eager to return to the pool after our recent closures to get their children back to a sense of normalcy and routine. WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL WATER SAFET Y SKILLS THAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW AND BY WHAT AGE? As well as the mechanics of learning to swim, a large part of our program focuses on educating kids about water safety in and around the water. This includes teaching them to only go swimming with an adult and with their togs on. Parents have an active role to play too, ensuring they continue to teach water safety at home. This is followed up with basic reach and throw rescues and encouraging people to ‘Yell and Tell’, rather than jumping in the water to help someone. Water safety in Australia also needs to acknowledge the many aquatic environments we have (such as oceans, pools, creeks and dams). Developing water safety skills and knowing what to do in a dangerous situation in and around water is key to preventing drowning. The older your kids become, the more important this water safety messaging is. As they grow up, they start to head into more dangerous situations, so they need to know how to keep themselves safe. Rackley Swimming’s Water Safety Week

WATER SAFETY

Australian Swim Schools Association’s (ASSA), SAFER Layers of Protection Swimming skills – ongoing lessons increase skills and confidence Adult supervision – adults should remain within arms’ reach of children under five Fences and gates – ensure all fences and gates are secure and are compliant Emergency plan – know what to do if an accident should occur Reduce the risk … for SAFER swimming

highlights vital water safety messages and strategies for swimmers and their families, with a different safety focus for each week throughout the year. Whilst all our lessons aim to focus on the basics of water safety, our Water Safety Weeks highlight these skills and how they can be applied in real-life scenarios including: • Survival strokes • Treading water • Safe entry and exit from the water • Techniques for clothed swimming survival • Use of devices to assist rescue • Basic swimming skills. WHAT ARE YOUR KEY WATER SAFET Y TIPS FOR PARENTS? For parents, supervision is the most essential part of water safety. If a young child is in the pool, then you must be in the pool with them. Even once children are

older, they should still always be actively supervised when in the water. When there is a group of children or pool party, one of the smartest ways to supervise children is to have a designated supervisor whose single role is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children in the water.

WHAT MAKES A SWIM SCHOOL GREAT? The teachers! At Rackley Swimming, our teachers are heavily invested in our 5 Steps to Success teaching principles: Support, Trust, Energy, Patience and Success. The pool environment is also very important. We offer a warm, nurturing learn to swim experience in family-friendly, all-weather environments. Our 32°C heated and enclosed pools allow the littlest of swimmers to enjoy the benefits of year-round swimming.

Is your child scared of the water? They may be suffering from Aquaphobia. Here’s what you can do to help them to begin to enjoy the water.

f you have a toddler or child who has a fear of water, often known as aquaphobia, you’ll probably be tempted to postpone getting them started with swimming lessons. You may think they will get over their fear of swimming as they grow older and you can try again in a few years’ time. You may have even given up on the idea entirely. Perhaps after a few traumatic attempts to get them into the water. Although this fear won’t go away by itself, it’s important to address it in a caring, understanding and safe way. A fear of swimming is fairly common

amongst infants, toddlers and older children. Due to restrictions this year, there may be a rise in the number of children who are unfamiliar with or afraid of the water as a result of limited access to the water and swimming lessons. This could even be the case with children who have previously been comfortable in the water. Fortunately, Kingswim Area Manager Natalie Fletcher says there are several fairly effective techniques for helping your child to overcome their fear of water. Once they do get over their fear, there’s no reason why they can’t go on to be an extremely confident and competent swimmer.

“Even better, overcoming their fear of swimming will give them confidence to deal with any other fears they may have. First, it’s important to understand why kids may be afraid of water.”

HOW DO YOU TEACH A CHILD WHO IS AFRAID OF WATER TO SWIM? Often children who are afraid of swimming have sensitive, intense or inflexible temperaments by nature. It’s important for you to be positive and relaxed at all times; this helps to take the pressure off them in K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

In these cases, it is essential to take some time to observe the surroundings before they get started. Natalie says, “Encouraging them to play with water toys on the side of the pool is a great way to build comfort. The next step, if they’re feeling comfortable, would be to do some paddling.” You will see their bravery and confidence start to increase every time they complete a step. Achieving these small goals will help to keep your child motivated and small ageappropriate rewards such as stickers or small toys will help to keep them motivated.

WHAT CAUSES AQUAPHOBIA? There are several factors that can cause aquaphobia in kids. As with most phobias, it can be caused by one factor alone, or a combination of several factors over time. These could include: • Parents passing fear of water down unintentionally • Separation anxiety (from their parents) • Anxiety caused by the noise, activity and smells of the pool • The memory of a negative or traumatic experience in water • Dislike of getting wet • Dislike of water going in their nose or eyes • Seeing an upsetting water-related incident in the pool or on TV When working to overcome your child’s fear, try to establish the cause of their aquaphobia; doing so will make it a lot easier to address.

A trained instructor can patiently take them from being fearful to being confident in the water.

SANCTUARY Early Learning Centres—where our little ones are safe, nurtured and educated. But behind all the hugs and the play-based activities, do you really know what goes into owning and running a high quality centre? We chat to Lauren Hall, founder and owner of Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, to find out. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START S A N C T U A R Y E A R LY L E A R N I N G ADVENTURE? I have a background in marketing and events but when the opportunity came to make the transition into childcare, it felt like the perfect move. As I spent more time in early learning, something ignited in me; I had discovered something that I was truly passionate about. So, in 2017, my husband and I purchased our first centre together. Three years later, we have just opened our sixth centre in Maudsland. W H Y WA S C R E AT I N G A FA M I LY OWNED CHILDCARE SERVICE IMPORTANT TO YOU? When I had my son, I really felt there was a

gap in the market for a family owned and operated early education service. I envisaged a service where the owners were accessible to families. So, at Sanctuary, we have a really hands-on approach at all our centres. We know all the families and we know our teams. We handpick all the educators and we work together with the directors to ensure we deliver the absolute best in care for every child, whatever their needs. Things at Sanctuary are continually evolving but, being family owned, we are able to make things happen as soon as needed. Before making decisions in the centres, we get input from families and educators to make sure we take a truly collaborative approach to early childhood and care. We also believe that, being family owned, we

could truly stand by our words when we say we are a holistic and inclusive service. We are there each day to work with the relevant authorities, work with families, offer those extras such as a Green Team that focuses on sustainability and teaching the children about recycling, upcycling and looking after the planet. We also have sports programs onsite, as well as a chef that cooks all the meals. As the owners, and as parents, we can make that happen. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT SO FAR? Oh, there are so many!
