ood and travel are two words that have completely changed in meaning over the last 18 months. Instead of lengthy flights and currency changes, travel now means exploring the many wonderful corners of Queensland. Since dining out was subject to restrictions, there’s a renewed sense of appreciation for eating out as a family and supporting the local eateries on our own doorstep. Unexpectedly, these shifts also mean the experiences of food and travel now exist in a far more vibrant and meaningful way. It’s less about seeing sights and more about seeing each other. This is because we now use these experiences to do what really matters— to reconnect. Obviously, being parents of wriggly children with zero attention span, we
still want to do these things without too much hard work (or the risk of epic meltdowns). And so, to make this important shared family time simple, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone, this issue is all about local food and travel for families. #supportlocal We’ve got family friendly resorts, fun activities and day trips, as well as plenty of tips for nourishing little brains. Everything you need to take that next family holiday without any of the hassle (or cost) of getting on a plane. Because, let’s be honest… when you live in paradise, why go anywhere else?

FIVE + KNUX REL AUNCHES
fter a brief hiatus changing hands, kids urban streetwear store Five + Knux has relaunched with a fab refresh and stunning updated range. Offering the perfect combination of online shopping, design and creativity with some edgy attitude and cheeky playfulness, taking over the business was the ideal ‘covid pivot’ for event manager Renee Schmidt. “Choosing brands and key pieces in each range to stock, the styling, the mixing and matching of brands, taking photos and creating fun social media posts— it’s great fun!” Renee said. “And it is true, when a small business gets an order in, we really do do a
happy dance!” With an urban, edgy and streetwear vibe, Five + Knux is all about giving kids a chance to express themselves. “It’s mostly unisex, so generally all our pieces can be worn by anyone,” Renee said. “We have a whole lot of attitude. We want kids to have the freedom to express their own style and have fun and be confident in who they are.” “With sustainability in mind it also works well as we stock great quality brands so we’re trying to bring back the ‘hand-me-down’ trend with our pieces—then it won’t matter if you’re wearing your big brother’s jeans or your little sister’s hoodie.” www.fiveandknux.com

ew research has revealed Aussie toddlers are walking over four times more than adults, taking an average of 17,448 steps a day and covering an average distance of 3.4km. While the step count alone is already impressive, the research also uncovered that toddlers are doing a range of movements, with a daily average of 5,280 crawl steps, 2,640 commando crawls, 2,400 leg kicks, 1,440 bum shuffles and 720 climbs. Amounting to 1,710 different moves per hour, little ones are doing more reps than an average 45-minute circuit class! The research was conducted by Huggies to uncover just how much Aussie bubs

Gabrielle Davidson, Head of Marketing at Huggies, commented: “We’ve spent five years developing the SlimFLEX technology to specifically meet the needs of Aussie bubs, and we’re so thrilled with the end result—our very own take on active wear for bubs.” Celebrity ambassadors, Matty ‘J’ Johnson and Laura Byrne, said: “We knew Marlie–Mae was always running around, but we didn’t realise how many steps toddlers clock up. ueensland early education provider, Little Scholars, has launched a new program with Robina’s Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities, inspired by the phenomenal outcomes revealed by the ABC’s Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds. The intergenerational care program connects the young children and seniors once every fortnight; improving the mental and social development of the children whilst helping to alleviate challenges of isolation and dementia commonly faced by seniors. Odyssey resident Carmel Nicols, says it has been a long time since being in the company of children, and that spirits are high across the community after each Little Scholars visit. “We have such a special time playing board games, play doh and reading books … it really helps us connect with our childhood and keep up with the current generation,” says Carmel. Founder and Managing Director of Little Scholars, Jae Fraser, says intergenerational care initiatives are backed by research and are producing extremely positive developmental outcomes for young children; giving them a healthier understanding of the world around them. “Having frequent interaction with people who are one or even two whole generations older than themselves, can help children become more accepting of differences, as well as helping them learn about the natural ageing process and reduce potential fear of elderly people, ” says Jae. www.mylittlescholars.com.au

water park, ice skating rink, kids club, cafe, retail shops, deluxe family rooms and an adultsonly pool and bar opening this Christmas, all situated within one resort and just a few short minute’s walk from some of the Gold Coast’s best beaches. What could this place possibly be? Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast has just undergone major renovations as part of its 2021 post-COVID glow-up. And here at Kids on the Coast HQ, we just can’t get enough of it! The project has included a captivating upgrade of the resort’s main lobby, complete with a jungle gym, sleek marble walls and stylish decor. Before you even unpack, you’ll find yourself relaxing as you sink into the lobby lounges, soaking up the view of the tropical aquarium behind the front desk. Once you’ve checked in, it’s off to your room in the brand-new deluxe accommodation wing ‘Dusty’s Digs’, a tribute to the iconic Aussie adventurer and one of four resort mascots, Dusty. From there, the choices are endless, rock climbing or laser tag? Perhaps some snacks from one of four new dining venues? Or if you are staying later in the year you can utilise the kids club and sneak off to the adults-only pool bar that is currently under construction and due to be open this Christmas. No matter your mood, personal style or family size, one thing is for sure, the whole family is going to love the new-look Paradise Resort! However, while this multi-award-winning family resort may be basking in the glitz and glamour of a 10 million dollar renovation, behind the scenes there’s a whole different story of what could have been. At the start of 2020, the future for Paradise Resort looked bleak. Amidst a global pandemic and an infrastructure boom, it was set for demolition to make way for a new apartment tower, just another to

After having been an integral part of the Gold Coast tourism scene for nearly 40 years, and having hosted generations of Australians throughout its time, hotel owner Dr Jerry Schwartz knew this couldn’t possibly be the end. So, Jerry and the team at the Schwartz family group put their heads and their pockets together to come up with Plan B—a great big do-over. This refurbishment is revolutionising the meaning of a one-stop-shop holiday destination. Together, Jerry and the resort’s dedicated general manager Mr David Brook, pride themselves on the experience they offer. A place they believe is not somewhere simply to just stay, but a place to visit and experience together as a family. With endless kids club adventures, two giant water parks, a lagoon pool, a large heated spa and a daily entertainment program, you’ll be lucky if you even see the kids! Making the escape to the newly established adults-only poolside bar and cafe all the more appealing, because once it opens, all you’ll need to do is sit back,
relax and replenish. There’s never been a better time to take a staycation right here in Southeast Queensland, as Queensland tourism is revamping its $28 billion dollar industry. With world-renowned theme parks, glorious beaches, a stunning hinterland and some of the state’s best national parks, Mr Brook believes that locals don’t get enough time to explore their own backyard—a backyard that other Aussies travel thousands of miles for. “No other state in Australia has weather like this, especially as we come into winter. W
e chat to Kimberley Harper, Parentline Manager, to find out how we can normalise asking for and accepting help. Because, fellow parents, the era of perfect and stoic parenting is totally over. (Amen to that!) WHAT CAN WE DO TO NORMALISE HELP SEEKING? The shift in normalising help seeking has already begun. The world was different a decade ago—people were less busy, but also less likely to put their hand up when they needed help. Today, most people are more open to discussing their emotional needs. However, there’s still work to be done to remove that stigma that says you are failing if you need support. Parents need to know that needing support is not an indictment on their parenting. Everyone needs help! And this needs to be the norm, not the exception. HOW CAN PARENTLINE HELP? Parentline can help in so many ways! We offer a free (yes, free!) counselling service, available 365 days a year, 8am to 10pm. All you need to do is pick up the phone, or jump onto our web chat.
In this day and age, where wait times to see health specialists are long (and often very costly), Parentline is a service that is always available and always free, and every parent needs to know that. Most importantly, there’s no limitations to how you use the service. There’s a huge percentage that are one-off calls, but we can provide ongoing support too. We can book in calls for families and we can listen— no matter how big or small you feel the problem is. For me, parenting comes down to capacity. On certain days, it can be lower than others. When a parents capacity is low and they are struggling, to have someone non-judgemental to act as a holding space is invaluable. WHY DO YOU FEEL PARENTS ARE R E A L LY S T R U G G L I N G T O D AY ? Everything that happens in your life affects your capacity to parent. And we have so much more going on nowadays—work, managing finances, running a household, friendships, lack of extended family support. All these things impact on our daily life. I like to see it as: it’s not what pops the balloon, but rather what has been blowing it up.
WE ARE VERY PROUD TO BE YOUR MEDIA PARTNER! WHY DO WE ALL NEED TO J O I N F O R C E S T O D AY T O HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE? I’m a massive advocate for early intervention, and normalising use of the service for everyday families. Partnering with a wonderful magazine like Kids on the Coast/Kids in the City—that reaches a large proportion of parents in Southeast Queensland—is invaluable in letting families know that we are here to help. The sooner we get in there and assist, making this service as normal as calling the GP, the better it is for families. If we look after parents and their emotional wellbeing, the kick on effect is huge. I F Y O U C O U L D S AY O N E T H I N G T O N E W PA R E N T S T O D AY, W H AT WOULD THAT BE? Parents need to understand how important they are. The concept of self care needs to be top of mind, and and they need to know that free support is available to them, whenever they need it. And it’s ok to ask for help, everyone needs help sometimes.

The Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort has reopened as the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa, and it’s already impressed families around the country with its amazing offerings. The five-star property, right in the heart of Surfers Paradise, has 223 beautifully redesigned rooms and suites with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean right around to the Gold Coast hinterland. As the very first JW Marriott in Australia, no expense has been spared making little travellers welcome and giving their parents the relaxing break they deserve. When guests check in, children are gifted their own package with an activity book, crayons, and a schedule of all of the family activities that week. And there’s no shortage of those. The Family by JW program caters to families who are creative, active or culinaryminded. The complimentary activities include scavenger hunts, fish feeding at the Lagoon Pool and use of sporting equipment on the basketball and tennis courts. Pre-booked activities start from just $20, and include junior mixology sessions, Mini Minoso sushi classes, pizza making in Citrique restaurant, and herb planting in the
JW Garden. The hotel also has a games room, open from 8am to 10pm, which has arcade-style amusements for all ages. While the beach is only a leisurely 300-metre walk away, families can happily spend hours in the Marriott’s famous water attractions, which include a heated freshwater resort pool, slides, hot-tub, and the ever-impressive saltwater lagoon surrounded by rocky grottos and waterfalls. The four-metre deep lagoon will delight kids—and adults—of all ages, with its reef and more than 300 tropical fish that can be explored with on-site snorkel and sea scooter hire. The lagoon’s sandy shoreline even has a silicone-base that prevents it from sticking, how great is that! And because this is a five-star experience, there’s no need to bring your own towel for the sun loungers and cabanas dotted around the pool’s lush tropical gardens. When it comes to mealtimes, children are well-catered for at the Marriott’s four restaurants and bars. Not only are they all equipped with high chairs and children’s utensils, the menus are both kid-friendly and reflect the hotel’s farm-to-table program, using produce—including edible flowers— from the onsite garden. For those that prefer to eat poolside, they’ve taken care of that too, with a retro food van serving delicious Asian-inspired street food. Now that’s a holiday both parents and kids can rave about!

MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE RE-OPENS
N
orth Star Holiday Resort at Hastings Point has reopened its Marine Discovery Centre following a million-dollar transformation. Featuring a showcase of world-class marine and coastal science displays, state-of-the-art light and sound technology and interactive digital terminals, the upgraded Marine Discovery Centre is designed to inspire and educate, and help people of all ages to understand and care for the aquatic environment. Located above the new adult leisure centre at North Star Holiday Resort, the centre also has a purpose-built space for lectures, seminars, social and business events, and school trips. Since the original centre opened in 2008, thousands of school groups from across Southeast Queensland and New South Wales, along with holidaymakers at North Star Holiday Resort, have visited the centre to learn about the importance of protecting the marine environment. And with the refurbishment complete, the centre is now set to continue to be a leading destination for marine education for many years to come.
THE HISTORY OF THE NORTH STAR HOLIDAY RESORT MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE The Marine Discovery Centre’s story dates back 60 years, to when Marine Biologist Ted Brambleby first began collecting marine specimens. The passionate environmentalist first shared his displays

from the boot of his car in the ‘60s, driving coastal roads and stopping to educate beachgoers, scuba divers, snorkellers and like-minded ocean lovers along the way. In 1999, Ted joined forces with teacher and business partner Kerrie Trees and created a unique opportunity for camps and day visits for students, teachers, community groups and holidaymakers at Hastings Point Caravan Park. In 2008, proprietors of North Star, Ian and Diana Beadel, allocated space in their resort’s ‘Seascape Building’ for Ted and Kerrie to set up their marine specimens and displays.
THE MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE REFURBISHED Fast forward to 2021 and Ian and Diana Beadel have funded the latest refurbishment, with a cost of $1M, to ensure the longevity of this unique environmental learning facility. Ian says he sees this investment as paramount to the continuation of the program’s success, fostering respect and knowledge of the marine environment amongst younger generations. “Many aren’t aware that it is one of the largest, privately funded marine education facilities in Australia; a valuable community asset that must be fiercely protected. It’s one of a kind, and this latest redevelopment is the next phase of our long-term strategy to ensure its future,” says Ian. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . THINGS TO DO
“We aim to teach people to have a voice for the marine environment and be proud to use it” Having been an integral part of the education programs at the Marine Discovery Centre for over 12 years, Ted’s son, Rhett, is now busy reviving their popular school holiday camp program and weekly discovery sessions. “Prior to COVID, we ran a very busy school program, where schools from across Southeast Queensland would come for a one- or two-night camp to utilise both the marine centre and explore the unique rocky shores that we are so lucky to have at Hastings Point,” said Rhett. “At low tide, it’s an incredible place for kids to explore; looking in crevices and pools and finding all sorts of creatures.” “Kids can see octopus and wobbygongs, and hold sea cucumbers. They can experience the huge biodiversity around them and see marine life in action.” “We found that combining theoretical knowledge at the centre with field work at the rocky shores proved to be a huge success, so we can’t wait to welcome school groups to our new Marine Discovery Centre once more and continue that education.” Rhett also holds weekly discovery sessions at the Marine Discovery Centre, for families to visit and explore the centre. “We’ve got microscopes so the kids can explore micro communities and touch tanks for kids to see marine life up

close. These sessions are already proving to be a much-loved part of a family’s holiday activities!” For resort guests staying at North Star Holiday Resort during the school holidays, Rhett also runs free guided walks to the rocky shores. “Its quite easy in our modern world for kids to never really venture into an eco system. They might have gone to the park, watched the Octonauts on TV, but to actually hand them a sea urchin to hold, and see that joy of holding a real creature—it’s always an incredible moment.” Marine Discovery Centre Educator and passionate environmentalist, Kerrie Trees, says it is up to every person on the planet to be the voice for micro and macro fauna and flora that have no voice. “Through this centre, we can continue to encourage the young and the old, schools, communities and governments to take up the challenge and accept responsibility for our environment. “We aim to teach people, especially younger generations, to have a voice for the marine environment and be proud to use it,” said Kerrie. The launch of the new Marine Discovery Centre coincided with the announcement that North Star had been awarded the highly regarded Eco-Tourism Australia certification, which is internationally recognised through the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. HUNGRY LITTLE BRAINS

e know that healthy food absorbed by healthy bodies creates healthy little minds. But how do you know that your child is getting the best in nutrition when at kindergarten or their early learning centre? Boasting onsite chefs that create nutritious meals for children every day, we chat to the team at Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure to find out the secret to nutritional success.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE FRESH, NUTRITIOUS MEALS TO THE CHILDREN EVERY DAY? A nutrient-rich diet is important for healthy growth and development. At Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, we ensure all children in our care are provided with a menu full of nutrientrich food, and that all of our meals are prepared onsite daily by our chefs. Our team is passionate about educating children about the benefits of healthy eating, and creating a stronger connection between nutrition and health.

WHAT PROCESS DO YOU GO THROUGH, WHEN DECIDING ON A MENU? Our menus change with each season of the year. Our chefs identify seasonal produce changes and update each menu. We discuss what did and didn’t work, what the children loved and didn’t love—and the meals they couldn’t get enough of! They discuss what produce is in season, and ways they can introduce new and Australiangrown produce that children may not have tried before, like adding Native Australia Lemon Myrtle to an afternoon tea muffin. Through an active collaboration process, they bring new recipes to the Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure menus that are healthy, nutritious, sustainable, seasonal and delicious. Once our chefs collectively decide on the menu for the season, it is sent to our Paediatric Nutritionist, Jodie Wilson from the Dietitian Studio. Jodie conducts a thorough analysis of our menus and checks the Healthy Eating Advisory Service Menu Planning Guidelines for Long Day Care checklist. She will revise the menu based on her findings and develop recommendations to improve

Our entire team is passionate about driving the ‘paddock to plate’ meal experience and providing sustainability education and knowledge to your children. We use a hands-on method to demonstrate where our food comes from, with each centre caring for their own herb and vegetable gardens. The children learn how to care for the garden, watch the produce grow, harvest the produce, and then create delicious meals.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE
T
(lunch) box
hough we dream of being that parent who packs a Pinterest-worthy lunchbox, the reality is that our kids’ lunchboxes are usually a collection of whatever healthy-ish things we can throw together before dashing out the door each day. Fortunately, the team at King’s Christian College has compiled some handy tips to make that dash a little easier!
KEEP IT SIMPLE
While variety and presentation may make a lunchbox more appealing, there is no need to cut sandwiches into novelty shapes or stuff a bento box with a myriad of tiny snacks. Focus on providing enough food, which you know they will eat, to get them through the day and balance their nutritional needs with other meals eaten at home.
G E T T H E K I D S I N V O LV E D
They are much more likely to eat what’s in the lunch box if they have a hand in preparing it. Even getting their ideas and suggestions can boost the likelihood of success.

THINK ABOUT HOW IT WILL LOOK IN A FEW HOURS
Don’t be fooled by those glossy food photos! Think about how the food will travel and how it will look in a few hours’ time. Our enjoyment of food comes as much from how it looks as how it tastes.
THINK OUTSIDE THE (LUNCH) BOX
There are many alternatives to the traditional sandwich that are quick to prep and pack:
• Left-over pizza slices • Noodles or soup in a thermos • Crackers and spread (with a plastic knife) • Pasta salads • Hard-boiled eggs
PAC K ‘D O I T YO U R S E L F I E S’
Most kids are quite happy to assemble their own sandwiches at school. So, when time is tight, just butter a couple of slices of bread and pack with small boxes of cream cheese/ chicken and leave them to it. Other ideas might include:
• Cruskits/Ryvita and spread (they go soggy if you spread in advance) • DIY ‘Lunchables’ - crackers with small portions of cheese and ham • Plain pitta bread with separate box of salad, grated carrot, cheese, etc. • Plain Greek yoghurt with small container of honey and/or granola
USE LAST NIGHT’S LEFTOVERS
Keep an eye on dinner to see what leftovers can be repurposed. The following will make great lunches the next day:
• Meatballs or sausages • Strips of seasoned chicken • Garlic bread • Side salad • Slices of pie
M U LT I-TA S K I N G T O T H E M A X
Sneak in a little lunchbox prep whilst making dinner. If the oven is on, pop in some cheese straws or sausage rolls at the same time. Or slice extra carrot sticks to box up with dip, whilst preparing the evening veggies. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
PREP AHEAD
Making lunchboxes the night before is admirable, but not many parents actually manage it. However, starting the school week organised can significantly ease the morning stress, and this is as simple as preparing some lunch components in batches in advance. Weekend prep might include things like:
• Slices/tray bakes, which can be frozen • Muffins (sweet and savoury) • Banana bread • Home-made hummus • Savoury pastries or quiches • Home-made muesli/cereal bars • Mini lasagnes (using muffin tins) • Splitting fruit and veg such as carrot sticks and small bunches of grapes into individual portions • Packaging crackers/nuts/dried fruits in individual containers
While leaving sandwich assemblage until the morning keeps things fresh, it helps to have fillings prepped and ready to go in the fridge, such as:
• Shredded iceberg lettuce • Cooked chicken and bacon • Ready sliced cheese • Tuna and mayo
K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
Sandwich fillings that freeze well:
• Butter • Cream cheese (full-fat freezes better than low-fat) • Cheese (except for cottage cheese) • Ham • Pesto • Peanut butter • Vegemite • Meat/chicken • Mustard
PA S S T H E B U C K
By high school (at the latest), your kids should be able to prepare and pack their own lunches. Younger children should be able to assemble their own lunch box, if you’ve prepped the components. Of course, when kids are responsible for their own lunches, there’s the risk of them packing a box full of snacks and sugary nastiness, so it’s important to establish rules. This can be done with a simple checklist on the fridge:
• 1 piece of fruit • 1 sandwich, wrap or alternative • 1 dairy (yoghurt or cheese) • 1 vegetable • 1 fibre/grains (dried fruit, muesli bar) • Water
DON’T OVERDO IT!
Even growing, active children need less food than we think they do. Here is a nutritionist’s guide to how much food children should consume for lunch: TO D D L E R (1-3 Y E A R S)
• 1 slice bread + avocado = 140cal • 100g yoghurt + fruit = 160cal PRIMARY (4-7 YEARS)
• Carrot sticks = 20cal • 1 piece of fruit = 80cal • Popcorn = 60cal • Chicken wrap = 200cal
P R E-T E E N S (8-12 Y E A R S)
• Cut-up salad = 60cal • 1 piece of fruit = 80cal • Popcorn = 60cal • Cheese and crackers = 150cal • Tuna and avocado bread roll = 250cal TEENAGERS (13+)
• 2 pieces of fruit = 160cal • Chicken sandwich = 200cal • Tuna salad = 200cal • Cheese and crackers = 150cal • Nut bar = 150cal

LET’S HEAR IT FOR MORE PLAY ON VACAY! The best family holidays aren’t about the budget or even the destination
P
By Josephine Agostino
lanning the perfect family holiday can leave many parents falling into a very familiar trap. In an effort to keep everyone happy, and avoid the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ from the kids, trips away from the hustle and bustle of daily life have become overscheduled with back-to-back activities and ticket bookings. New research has revealed that the most rewarding family holidays happen when there is far less planning both before and during a trip away. According to a survey conducted by vacation home website Stayz, the most memorable family holiday activity isn’t one of Australia’s most visited tourist sites. It’s playing. “Playing games, swimming in the pool, eating out and making sandcastles are the greatest holiday memories for Australians,” says Stayz travel expert Simone Scoppa. Regardless of whether the vacation is at a campground, farmstay, resort, rental house—or even a staycation at home—what Aussies really want out of their few precious weeks each year away from work and school with their loved ones is more unstructured downtime. “Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve all had a very serious 12 months and it’s left K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . us craving some good times with loved ones,” says Ms Scoppa. “Time for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, nieces and nephews to escape into a game of cards, hide and seek, dress ups or Marco Polo in the swimming pool. Time not to worry about work, homework or mowing the grass.” The hectic juggle of daily life is providing families with less time to play than ever before, and that’s evident in the survey, which revealed 61 percent of women and 59 percent of men agree that parents feel guilty for not having time to play with their kids. That means creating opportunities for this type of interaction on holidays is far more important than ticking off locations on an itinerary. The survey revealed that seven in 10 Aussies believe that playing with kids helps to create stronger bonds and memories. Of all the states surveyed, it’s Queenslanders who value play the most, with 76 percent of respondents believing play is key to achieving a quality family holiday. Making time to play is also much better for our health than we think, says leading psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. “Nothing lights up the human brain like three-dimensional play with loved ones,” says Dr Carr-Gregg, who is a specialist in

Play is what helps us feel young and energetic throughout our entire lifespan.” So, what’s high on the wishlist for Aussies to enjoy more playtime on holidays? speed internet, a swimming pool with inflatables, an indoor cinema room, board games, and scooters and bikes. “Once we drilled down into the research it was clear that it was human connection—not just internet connection—that really matters most to families,” says Ms Scoppa. It’s not just immediate families who benefit from playtime while on a break. Grandparents create stronger bonds with children in their family during this special time, according to 46 percent of those surveyed. That’s why holiday options that allow grandparents as well as other extended family members to spend more time with each other are becoming more popular than ever as people seek the reconnection lost during the pandemic. When choosing a destination, consider the type of downtime that your family enjoys most. Do they want to spend hours in the water cooling off, or would they rather somewhere to explore the bush and spot wildlife? Wherever you go, enjoying playtime doesn’t have to cost a cent. You could: • Take a dip at the property’s local beach or lake—or if it has a hose in the backyard, spray it at the kids for some old fashioned fun. • Take a few sports items from the garage and create a backyard Olympics. • Bring a portable speaker and have a nightly dance party. • Make a scavenger hunt and treasure map to explore the accommodation grounds. Deciding just what type of

accommodation may suit a family’s needs can be tricky, but there are plenty of online tools to help take the stress out of planning. Stayz provides the option to search for properties with items such as cots and high chairs, those that allow pets, and those that have been rated 4+ stars by reviewers with families. Having dedicated family time to rest and relax together does wonders in helping the family bond more. Look for the right accommodation that will grant you relaxing amenities, like a private pool or hot tub, as well as communal spaces for a game of charades or completing a jigsaw puzzle. Stayz also has a new function on its Trip Boards planning tool where you can now add a poll to allow members of your group to vote on their favourite place to stay. Taking a few shortcuts for meal planning will also give you more quality family time. Arrange a grocery delivery for your arrival day and have a few meals planned out. If you’re driving, take a meal kit box with you and share the cooking load with other family members without having to worry about what dish to make. Creating unforgettable family experiences is the goal of every holiday—and there are just as many opportunities to do that, despite not being able to go overseas. “Family holidays have been a lifelong tradition in Australia,” says Ms Scoppa. “And at the core of what holidays are all about is just bringing your loved ones together and making new memories to talk about for years to come.” K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M .
