sk most people in our generation about their holidays as a child, and their memory will instantly be whisked back to the good ol’ Aussie holiday park. Thanks to Covid, and many other reasons (see p14 for more on that!), the quintessential holiday park is once again the must-do destination for families. As one of our favourite holiday parks in the region, we take a tour of Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park to find out their secrets to creating a magical family holiday.

This issue is also a celebration of the dads, of the partners and of the diversity that modern-day parenting allows.

Being a working mum, I’m very grateful that traditional family gender roles have blurred since I was a kid.

The traditional nuclear family has also blurred for the better, with same-sex parents, single parent families and

blended families all with kids and thriving.

This positive shift means that partners are more involved in our kids’ lives nowadays too. From changing nappies to sharing the load of Mount Washmore, modern dads are firmly in the parenting trenches… and we love it!

To delve deeper on this, we have some great tips from our friends at Parentline about parenting in the modern-day family. And we meet the dads making positive change in our local community.

And, as always, we have the latest news, reviews, events and activities for kids and their grown ups.

Aussie mum trains Queensland Police Service in how to respond to autistic people

K

athrine Peereboom is no stranger to training police. Founder and CEO of Spectrum Support, a leading provider of autism training, advocacy and awarenessraising, she personally developed an autism training program which she delivered to hundreds of NSW Police in 2019, earning her The Commissioner’s Safety Initiative Award the same year. Now she is providing autism training to Queensland Police Service officers across the state.

“We developed a two-hour course called Autism and Law Enforcement and we have delivered this in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville, Rockhampton, Cairns and other locations,” said Kathrine.

QPS Senior Sergeant Gregory Giles said the training was the first of its kind for Queensland.

“It provides participants with the skills, knowledge and attitude to improve officers’

performance,” he said.

“Police are expertly trained to respond to crisis situations with certain protocols, but these may not always suit interactions with autistic people. Given police are often first responders in an emergency, it is critical for police officers to have a good understanding and working knowledge of autism, and the broad range of behaviours that people on the spectrum can exhibit in emergency situations,” said Kathrine.

“Unless you understand autism and the way it impacts people, their behaviour and ability to communicate, you can accidentally perceive their actions as non-compliance, when in fact they simply don’t have the capacity to engage. Or they simply engage in a different way.”

I wanted to become the 2022 leader of Mount Alvernia to give back to the College community.

When I first started at Mount Alvernia in Year 7, I remember watching the 2017 College Captain and knowing that I wanted to be like her when I was older. From then on, I worked towards this goal by involving myself in different aspects of College life and applying for leadership positions. Through these experiences, my desire to become college captain was not only confirmed, but my love for the school grew.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR AS CAPTAIN?

My main goal this year is to help all students feel they can call Mount Alvernia their second home. Personally, I feel ‘at home’ when I am appreciated, and I feel appreciated when I know that my ideas are valued. To create this atmosphere, I have been working with my team of whole-school captains to create forums where all students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and organise fun and inclusive events.

CAN YOU SHARE A STANDOUT MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME AT THE COLLEGE?

The 2020 multi-sport camp. I was in Year 10 at the time and the school hosted a three-day cross country and swim camp at the Gold Coast. It was an absolute blast and I really enjoyed exercising with my teammates in new settings and the bonding activities that brought us closer together.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT AND WHY?

I actually don’t have a favourite subject.

I love all of my classes as I have amazing teachers and classmates in every one of them! I learn interesting things in each of my classes and enjoy their content each for different reasons.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST WHEN YOU GRADUATE?

The people. Mount Alvernia is such a tight-knit community, and I am going to be absolutely devastated when I leave knowing that I won’t be able to sit with my friends at lunch every day, compete in school sport, attend club meetings and say hi to teachers and students in the hallways. I get emotional just thinking about graduating now!

uring previous generations, the viewpoint of traditional families was described as Mum at home in a nurturing, gatekeeper role.

It was Mum keeping the wheels turning at home; she was the nurse, cook, tutor, cleaner and about a million other jobs to boot! Dads back then were viewed as the breadwinners, the disciplinarian, the weekend outdoorsman, and the tutor (usually to sons). And while the buck tended to stop with Dad, it had to get past Mum to get Dad first.

Now, we know that these roles have morphed over the years. We can see the changes in which Mum and Dad both have careers. There are single-parent families and LGBTQI families. Can it hurt to ask the question: ‘Does my gender identity impact how I parent? Are there still some roles that seem to be defined by this in my family?’

A scenario to try: Take some time; sit down, and think where your family fits on this spectrum of roles. What does it mean to be you in your home? What kind of parent are you? Is this affected? If both parents work, does it feel even?

It might be clear that your family is a pretty up to date 2022 family. But what about the more subtle things?

How does communication and supporting your children feel in your family? Does this feel equal?

ABILITY is everywhere Able Cause is on a mission to neutralise the stigma around disability, and we couldn’t be more on board.

I

t’s a hot summer’s day and I’m in the car in the Plaza carpark, primed to do another phone interview. I do a lot of these—many in the car, some at swimming lessons, some I even get to do at a real desk.

Little did I know that this one would prove to be so one of those ‘seismic shift’ chats.

My interviewee (also, ironically, hiding out in a different car park!) was Sam Hall—dad of Oliver (aged 5), and twins Eleanor and Ava (aged 2).

The twins suffered from twin to twin transfusion syndrome in the womb—a condition where one twin donates and the other receives fluids. As a result, Eleanor was born prematurely with a brain bleed, which led to cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe vision impairment.

In the first few years of Eleanor’s life, with the daily challenges she faced and the many hurdles she overcame, the family were constantly reminded that she is far more than a disability diagnosis.

“She is able of growth, able of change, able to inspire… she is simply, able, in her own unique ways!” Sam says.

And as the passion for her unique ability grew, the ideas did too.

“12 months ago, we wanted to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day. Yet, we couldn’t find anything that we’d be proud to wear. We started doing t-shirts and through that process, I realised we had the opportunity to spread a greater message that could connect with other families like ours.”

And so Able Cause was born.

Its mission? to neutralise the stigma surrounding disability.

“Able Cause recognises that ability is not limited by mental or physical capacity. We are all uniquely different, yet we are all the same. We are all born into this world with the right to be seen, valued, respected and loved for who we are,” Sam says.

to celebrate strength of character, human spirit and individuality and to neutralise the stigma surrounding disability.

“We are all able, whether you have a disability or not, we all have something to be proud of. It could be something huge or it could just be the smallest thing.

But it all matters equally.”

WE ARE ALL ABLE

Sharing that message hasn’t come easily, and the 12 months since this started has been filled with challenges.

“I think the biggest one that a lot of businesses would relate to at the moment, is the pandemic and the endless disruption.

In terms of operating Able Cause, I also have a full-time job, so this is purely a passion project for me,” says Sam. “I've got my heart and soul invested in Able Cause, but there are many challenges for me with time and capacity. It’s crazy trying to wear all the hats, but we just continue with all the ideas and acting on them as they come.”

And with little Eleanor as a constant source of inspiration, that passion never abates.

“I think if Eleanor can achieve more than what was predicted for her and she’s kicking so many goals ... then so can we,” Sam says.

“This message is for all the other Eleanors out there, and there are so many.”

Raising awareness is a large part of Able Cause’s work.

“At the time, when you are first experiencing something like this, it feels really isolating, But you do soon learn that there is a great community out there of likeminded people who have their own stories K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

that might be similar to yours, who can connect on that level. And that was where we wanted to meld the two worlds together with the Able message.”

With a growing t-shirt line and the initiative gaining momentum, what’s next for Able Cause?

“We are so excited to launch a fresh, bright summer series with the messaging,” says Sam. “I’ve got a couple of designs that I'm actually wearing. I wear my Able t-shirts every day, regardless of what I'm doing!

“And at some point, I’d love to start an early education program in daycare centres for pre-kindy kids. Daycares are the hub of future societies, so I'd love to get an inclusive program going that helps kids understand that ability is everywhere.

It takes many forms. So that when they do meet a kid with disabilities in school, whether it be an intellectual disability or a physical disability, there is a positive pathway to them thinking about that person.

“It's important to tell the story so that other people understand that disability doesn't discriminate. It can happen to anybody at any time in any form. But it

shouldn't make a person seem lesser or less important or less valued. There's so much that people can offer in different ways.”

Sam says it’s about gaining perspective. He says we need to better understand what it actually means to be able.

“It’s not just walking down the street; it’s being able in overcoming obstacles, growing, inspiring ... If I can get that message out to everybody through our living example, then I think that’s our goal achieved.”

Oh, yes, back to the seismic shift. Hearing Sam’s story and passion struck a chord so deeply with my own family, after we also experienced recently how indiscriminately childhood disability can strike. I painfully understand how the word ‘ability’ takes on such a different form, when your own child can suddenly no longer run and jump, and you find incredible ability in so many other ways. It was a phone call that shifted my thinking from anger and heartbreak, to energy and determination, to jump on board the Able Cause. #GotTheTShirt

A dad’s role today is so much more than a game of footy on the weekend. Lukas Ritson from Wearthy writes about stereotypes, nature play and the modern dad.

ender roles in a child’s nuclear family have significantly blurred over the last two decades.

Today we have blended families, single parent families, same sex parents, non-binary parents. And with this, the ‘traditional’ role of dads has also (thankfully) shifted too.

Though this blurring of lines has started, Lukas Ritson from nature play experts Wearthy believes that there is still further room for growth.

“I think we need to move away from the stereotype that being a dad means rough and tumble play,” says Lukas. “While this can be developmental and fun for kids, the modern dad can offer so much more in terms of confidence and identity.”

THE MODERN DAD With the parenting load now more equally distributed, and the responsibility of raising the children no longer solely the mother’s domain, modern dads are far more available for their children and are more aware of the importance of their relationship and influence.

“Presence is a powerful tool for dads,” says Lukas. “Like Joe Brumm said in his talk at Childhood Summit 2021: ‘childhood isn’t all about the milestones or the big events… it’s those small interactions we have with our children every day that matter that most’.”

For our kids, these small yet critical everyday interactions are usually centred around play and sharing jobs around the house.

“Often men operate in the doing/fix it mindset, whilst mums tend to work on experience-based and more social play, rather than being outcome focused,” Lukas explains. “So, for Dads, it’s important to remind themselves to enjoy the process with their child, not the end result. I know for me, when I’m playing with my son Julian, we could be at my work bench and I will consciously need to put my own perfectionism aside—nails don’t need to be straight, cuts don’t need to be perfect.”

"Nature activates children’s physiology, enhances physical health and creates selfesteem. Compared to anything on a screen, it gives children unlimited possibilities— possibilities to engage with elements that can be used in different ways."

FOR DADS TO GET INVOLVED Even if you’re not a reader yourself, your participation in literacy activities at home can have an impact on your child’s academic achievement. You just have to send the message that reading is important!

1. Shared book reading:

Mum does a story one night, Dad the next. Mum might tend to focus on the character’s feelings, whilst Dad might link narrative to something more pertinent to the child: ‘They have a football! Remember when we took the football to the park last week to kick around?’

2. If you don’t see your

child every day, try to arrange a regular time twice a week that is the special reading night with Daddy. If you work away, put aside time to read over video call.

3. Children respond

to your enthusiasm! So, read something that you are enthusiastic about. If you prefer non-fiction, choose books about famous people, how things work, animals or sport. If you need some ideas, head into your local library.

4. If Dad isn’t around, is

there a male in your child’s life that can take the role of reading champion?

Grandparents, uncles, family friends. It takes a village to raise a child so involve the men in your life.

5. Tell stories about when

you were young. Kids love to hear about their parents as a child, and they are easy to recount.

6. Get your child

involved when you are doing household projects.

Describe what you are doing, let them help write shopping lists, label items in the garage, or assemble furniture.

7. When you are driving, read out billboards and signs that you see. And Read the menu together whenever you go out to eat.

8. Involve your child in everyday writing tasks, such as shopping lists, labelling things, writing thank you notes.

9. If you play a board

game with your child, pretend you’ve forgotten the rules and then read them with your child.

10. Make up your own

stories. Kids love dads being silly, and this is the perfect opportunity to use those silly voices and get into a story with your child as the main character.

READING FOR EVERY AGE

BABIES Even young babies can learn from reading books with you. Read slowly and spend time on each page, giving your baby time to focus on the shape of words and the pictures. Turn the page slowly—this shows Bub how to use a book. Point out and name familiar and new things your baby sees; the more words babies hear, the more words they learn.

Change the tone of your voice as you read. This makes it easier for your baby to pick up on different speech sounds, which is an important step towards your baby learning to make sounds.

Look for books with different textures so your baby can hear, see and feel the book.

Waterproof plastic and cloth books that can go in your baby’s mouth and into the bath are fantastic.

Choose books with bright colours or simple high-contrast pictures, as these are interesting and easy for babies to focus on. Babies enjoy books that have rhymes, rhythm and repetition.

TODDLERS At this age, reading with your child is all spending time together and about having fun with books, so it’s time get silly!

Help your child choose a book, and have them hold the book and turn the pages.

Get your child to fill in the words in a story they know. Try pausing, they might well finish the whole sentence for you!

Ask your toddler to describe actions in the book. For example, ‘What is the cow doing?’ or ‘What sound is the dog making?’.

Choose books with animals and animal noises, books about playtime that relate to their own experiences, and books about a favourite topic such as cars, castles, the ocean. Also, lift-the-flap and pop-up books are wonderful at this age, where toddlers can have fun with books with moveable pieces. Books that you can read in 4-5 minutes are a good length for this age.

PRESCHOOLERS Reading at this age is all about exploring stories and spending special time together, so it’s the perfect age to chat and ask questions.

Before you even start reading, ask your child questions, such as ‘Who is the author?’ ‘What do you think the story is about?’ ‘Who might be in it?’

Encourage your child to use their finger to trace the words while you read them.

Changing your voice and expression for different characters can also be fun. Repeat repetitive phrases and words together.

Vary the pace of reading and stop to ask questions during the story. For example: ‘What do you think happens next?’

Also ask them questions that will help them relate to the story, such as, ‘How would you feel if this was you?’ or, ‘What would you do if this happened to you?’

Preschoolers enjoy books that tell simple stories, especially ones with rhythm and repetition, and books about families, friends and going to school. They also enjoy books with characters who are about the same age as them, and characters who have quirky traits. Some preschoolers are very interested in non-fiction books, such as inventions, food, planets and animals.

THE NUTS AND BOLTS

OF CHILDREN'S HEALTH

As parents and carers, our key goal is to give our kids what they need to grow, develop, build a strong immune system and be happy, right? Being at the root of where the immune system, moods, and development flourish, gut health is central. Here are the three tools to have in your gut health toolkit.

NOURISH

• A whole food diet, with lots of diversity makes for happy and healthy gut microbes, happy guts and ultimately happy kids.

• Make plant foods the hero of the meal.

• Include bone broth in the diet.

• Include foods with probiotics like yoghurt and kombucha.

PRO TIPS

Include bone broth in soups, cook rice in it, add to pasta, mashed potatoes and sauces.

Add protein to all meals. e.g. Having crackers - add hummus or nut butters.

If you have a super picky eater, keep encouraging them to explore, but in the meantime you can always supplement by secretly adding in a superfood powder (like Nutra Organics) into pancakes, smoothies or icy poles.

Always have stewed apple-berry coulis on hand to add into unflavoured yoghurt.

DEFEND

• Get dirty: Kids need to play in the dirt and get exposed to a whole heap of different bugs to help strengthen their microbiome, therefore strengthen the immune system. So go easy on the hand sanitiser and let them play with the pet and make those mud cakes.

• Sunshine: There is a strong link between Vitamin D (from sunshine) and gut dysbiosis. Studies have shown that sunlight exposure helps the cells that fight off infection (T-cells) to get to an infection and sort it out faster. So if your kids have the sniffles or around those that do, sending them out for some sunshine daily is a great idea.

PROTECT

• Reduce chemical laden products in the house: laundry powder, cleaners, skin products - all which can have a detrimental impact on our gut microbes. Although we cannot 100% get away from this, we can reduce the toxic load.

• Go easy on the medications: although sometimes they are essential, often they are over prescribed. If prescribed antibiotics, always take a probiotic afterwards.

PRO TIPS

Keep a bottle of probiotics in the fridge, you can buy powders for the littlies. Hide it in smoothies, yoghurt or milk, just remember not to add it to anything hot otherwise you will kill the bacteria.

PRO TIPS

When the kids are sick and the sun is shining, get them outside for a picnic or time laying on a rug reading books. If they need encouragement, pillows and blankets on the trampoline work a treat.

At home try naturally sweet desserts like apple crumble, yoghurt with berries, homemade banana frozen ice cream.

For rewards, instead of sugary treats, how about stickers, small toys, or special choices of what to have for dinner instead?

Instead of constantly hand sanitising, switch to hand washing with soap.

evised in 1938, the Shapland family has been teaching kids to swim for over 80 years. We chat with Chris Shapland to find out more about what makes his family’s unique learn to swim program so successful.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE SHAPL AND SWIM PROGRAM? My grandfather was using this particular method in 1938, and then my father after him. From when I was a baby, my parents had the lease of an old pool in Toowoomba.

Throughout the years at that local pool, the method was developed and refined.

In 1973, my dad opened the first Shapland boutique swim school, and it has steadily grown from there.

HOW DOES YOUR TEACHING ST YLE DIFFER FROM T YPICAL SWIMMING LESSONS? In the bigger swim schools, they use what's called station teaching—where an instructor will stand in one spot and teach that one skill to a group of children.

Whereas in our unique Swim in Five system, our teachers are trained to apply our process, which is applicable whether you're a baby or an adult.

We ensure that our teachers are all highly trained in this process, and then they have the freedom to interpret and teach in a way

All our standard-sized pools have eight different water depths. They include an area where a two-and-a-half-year-old can stand up, and another that is much deeper to provide that deep water experience.

AND THE CL ASSES ARE SEMIPRIVATE, HOW DOES THAT HELP? Yes, our class sizes are a maximum of three, which is extremely important for children to really get that individualised teaching.

There’s no waiting around at the end for every child to take turns. We provide a friendly, caring environment to ensure your child will learn to swim with ease and confidence.

WHAT AGES DO YOU TEACH? We teach from babies through to adults. Our babies program starts at home via our Free Baby Home Development program, so when they enrol in our program at 6 months old they have already acquired the important skill of breath control. I personally developed the baby program over the last two decades, and am very proud to have developed a traumafree way for your baby to be able to relax and enjoy being totally immersed in water.

CHOCOLATE EASTER RASPBERRY NESTS Easter baking, anyone? Here is a simple healthy Easter recipe that the kids can easily make with you. Using a variety of wholefood ingredients, there is sweetness, sour, crunch in every bite. They look cute and are utterly delicious!

MAKES 12 | COOKING HANDS-ON TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOLING, FREEZING TIME: 1 HOUR INGREDIENTS:

• ¼ cup of coconut oil • 1 tbsp of honey • 1 tbsp of cocoa • 2 cups of puffed rice • 2 tbsp sunflower seeds • 1 cup of frozen raspberries • 1 tbsp of water • 1 tbsp of shredded coconut

METHOD

1. Warm the coconut oil, honey and cocoa on a low heat to combine, stirring the whole time.

This can be done with supervision from around five years of age. For young children, the adult can do this then remove from the heat into a different bowl.

2. Once all the ingredients are combined, remove the pot from the heat and add in the puffed rice.

3. Stir the puffed rice through and sprinkle the sunflower seeds in while stirring.

4. Line a muffin tray with little patty cases and spoon out the mixture evenly amongst 12 patty cases.

5. Measure out 1 cup of raspberries and if frozen, add in 1 tbsp of water and using the back of a fork, mush them up a little.

6. Spoon out the raspberries evenly over the rice puff mixture.

7. Sprinkle a wee bit of coconut over the top and pop the muffin tray into the freezer for an hour to set.

8. When ready, take them out and enjoy!

Through Jaime, Stephen King has this amazing ability to make the surreal seem so normal and rational. Like it is an everyday occurrence to see dead people exactly as they were when they died (hence the horror component)!

HEART SICK

by Jessie Stephens Heart Sick is a look into heartbreak through the eyes of three individuals—Ana, Claire and Patrick. All three stories delve into one significant relationship of that person. The excitement, the intensity and the desperation of each is striking. You can feel their love, loss and pain. It is both a whirlwind and yet wonderful to read.

Difficult to put down, the only thing that would make this book better would have been a happy ending for each person. But Heart Sick was never intended to deliver on that— because life isn’t like that.
