EDGE EARLY LEARNING BOOK A TOUR TODAY

Welcome to spring, to warmer days, and our SWIM issue!

Those who know me know that I have a love-hate relationship with swimming. I’m fiercely determined that my children learn to swim, with weekends spent coaxing them into the ocean and after-school sessions spent cheering them on at the pool. All despite my own crippling fear of water. Ironically, after living by the ocean for almost 25 years, I haven’t been able to overcome my phobia, and I am adamant that my kids will not inherit this trait.

On trips north to the reef, you’ll find me holding the towels or hovering at the shoreline, hoping a turtle will come over to say ‘hi’. I don’t think many people understand the importance of learning to swim more than those who are resigned to the sidelines and live in constant fear when around water.

So, to help us all transition to spring and ocean-ready days, we chat with Jay Clarke from Rackley Swimming to find out more about critical water safety education for our little ones. We also chat with Nathan Grieg, surf lifesaver and swim coach from

Alite Edvantage, to find out how to nurture the intrinsic connection to water that all Sunshine Coast kids need.

If your child is showing signs of being scared of the water, we have some great tips on overcoming aquaphobia. I will be putting some of these into practice for myself this spring!

Plus, if you are looking for a swim school, head to page 28 for a list of all the swim schools on the Sunshine Coast.

Out of the pool, we visit Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Buderim, to see how they are nurturing growth in the preschool years through independence. Love that idea! We are also joined by local baby sleep expert Kate Tronc, who is here to solve your baby’s sleep problems.

As always, we have the regular news, reviews, kid-friendly events and more, all wrapped up in our splash-tastic spring edition.

With love,

NEW YOGA PROGRAM for tweens and teens EMPOWERS PRIMARY SCHOOL KIDS

Sunshine Coast tweens and teens are now able to reap the benefits of yoga in a relaxed setting thanks to a new kids’ yoga and mentoring program from youth wellbeing service Sunshine Hope.

“Yoga helps kids improve focus, concentration, and confidence,” says Joeline, founder of Sunshine Hope. “It also teaches them how to manage stress and emotions, making them more resilient and relaxed.”

The eight-week program combines fun and engaging yoga poses with mindfulness techniques, creating a holistic approach to child development.

“Through mindfulness, children learn to slow down, pay attention and prolong attention, develop better focus, become self aware and learn to be present.”

Across the eight weeks, children will learn to strengthen their bodies, calm their minds, and develop a deeper understanding of

themselves and the world around them.

“Our program includes a variety of poses, breathing exercises, and meditation techniques, all tailored to the age and developmental stage of the children,” says Joeline. “We believe that yoga is a powerful tool for helping children build resilience, self-esteem, and a strong sense of wellbeing.”

Beyond physical and mental benefits, the program aims to foster a sense of empathy, selfawareness, and empowerment. By reflecting on their actions and how they impact others, children can develop a stronger understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Sunshine Hope’s kids’ yoga program is part of a broader initiative to support children’s wellbeing. The organisation also offers early intervention services, one-to-one mentoring, and social relationship programs. sunshinehope.com.au

Social entrepreneur, primary educator and avid cook Gemma Brown has launched an innovative food initiative for upper primary school students on the Sunshine Coast.

The Tuck Box Initiative aims to promote positive nutrition and create long-term, life-changing habits around food. It also encourages families to adopt sustainable practices and reduce single-use plastics.

“Our mission is to educate, empower and encourage school children to take responsibility for their nutrition and become active participants in the fight against food waste,” said Gemma. “We believe that by encouraging our students to be proactive, ethically minded, and health conscious, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future.”

Central to the initiative is The Good Food Journal, a unique, hybrid activity-cookbook designed to inspire kids to get involved in the kitchen and create their own school lunches (coined ‘Tuck Boxes’.) Aligned with the Queensland V9 Primary Curriculum, The Good Food Journal is designed as a classroom resource for schools as part of their Health and Home Economics teaching. It is also a helpful tool for families hoping to help their children better understand nutrition at home.

“ The Good Food Journal is a hybrid workbook combining fun food activities, meal planning, goal setting, and cooking challenges based on simple, homemade recipes,” says Gemma.

“The creation of long-term healthy habits is the ultimate aim! And healthy habits mean healthier, happier people and planet!” www.mytuckbox.com.au

A LIFETIME IN THE WATER STARTS with Rackley Swimming

Learning to swim is a crucial part of growing up in Queensland, but are all swim schools the same? We chat with Jay Clarke from Rackley Swimming to find out more about critical water safety education for our little ones.

Across Australia, shimmering coastlines, inviting pools, and sprawling waterways paint a picture of a nation intrinsically linked to water.

This aquatic playground offers a wealth of recreation opportunities. From weekend barbecues by the pool to family holidays splashing in the waves, swimming unlocks a door to fitness, recreation, and a deep connection with the Australian landscape. However, with great aquatic enjoyment comes responsibility. Ensuring everyone, particularly children, feels safe and confident in the water is paramount; knowing how to navigate the water confidently becomes an essential life skill. Therefore, water safety education and swim lessons become the cornerstones for unlocking the joy that swimming and living in Queensland offers. Learning to swim is so important that it begs the question: Are all swim schools equal? Jay Clarke, managing director and long-time business partner to CEO Reece Rackley from Rackley Swimming, believes this is not the case.

Our

mission is threefold: fostering water safety in children, developing their swimming skills, and nurturing their confidence in the aquatic environment.

“Our team is dedicated to nurturing each child’s swimming abilities, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence needed to be safer in and around water. We hear it from customers often, our teachers and the team around them makes the learning to swim experience welcoming and enjoyable. ” Jay says.

Today, the family-owned swim school boasts over 34 locations across Queensland and New South Wales, offering unparalleled access to high-quality swim education. But as Jay explains, Rackley Swimming is more than just a swim school; it’s a community that promotes water safety and confidence.

vision is to equip children with essential swimming skills that last a lifetime, helping them enjoy the Australian lifestyle to the fullest.

“At Rackley Swimming, we are passionate about teaching children the life-saving skill of swimming,” said Jay. “Our vision is to equip children with essential swimming skills that last a lifetime, helping them enjoy the Australian lifestyle to the fullest. We believe it’s never too early or too late to start your swim journey. This belief has become what’s defined our success in the swimming industry, that we offer lessons from infants who are just three months old in our free Baby Splash program and foster them all the way up to elite levels and everywhere in between.”

With a history dating back to 1951, Rackley Swimming has carved a reputation for excellence in swim education, catering to individuals of all ages and abilities. Their core

“When you join Rackley Swimming, you become part of a local community. Children can join as infants and continue swimming with us as they progress through the squad. Kids form lifelong friendships, supporting and challenging each other in the pool. It’s great to watch our pools become a place for social connection and gathering. We get to watch many moments worth celebrating, from first swim lessons, to winning Rackley Races and even hosting birthday parties.”

Adults, too, can benefit from Rackley’s expertise, which includes tailored programs designed to build water confidence and refine swimming techniques. Ultimately, Rackley Swimming aspires to cultivate a nation of confident swimmers, contributing to a safer and healthier Australian community.

BEACH SAFETY AND WATER CONFIDENCE

Learning to swim is far more than mastering laps and strokes.

“Swimming skills can help save lives, no

matter the aquatic activity,” says Jay. From fishing to playing at the beach, any activity near water carries a risk; swimming skills would be required if a child falls into the water while doing that activity.”

That’s why Rackley’s learn-to-swim program places a strong emphasis on water safety from the very beginning.

“Swimming lessons can start from three months old, with our free baby splash and play sessions,” says Jay. “These group sessions are a great way to introduce your child to being in the water whilst also being safe in a parent’s arms.”

“Our lessons equip kids with the knowledge and skills they need to be confident and safe around water, making them well-prepared for future adventures, from Nippers and wading through to surfing, and snorkeling.”

“Giving your children the skills of swimming is a gift that will benefit them for a lifetime,” says Jay. “With our dedicated teams, comprehensive programs, and conveniently located facilities, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to become a confident and capable swimmer. We’ve set out to make swimming a safe and enjoyable part of life for everyone.”

LEGACY OF CHAMPIONS AND THE NEXT GENERATION

For those that do have aspirations of swimming for gold, Rackley Swimming has

consistently produced world-class athletes, including six members of the Australian Dolphins team that went to the Paris Olympics and Paralympics.

Ky Hurst, a legend in open water and Ironman competitions, reflects on the unique environment at Rackley Swimming. ”Rackley Swimming had five athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris and one competing in the Paralympics. For the younger

MEET TREV THE TURTLE

When it comes to capturing the hearts (and imaginations) of young swimmers, Rackley Swimming knows just the shell for the job: Trev the Turtle. More than just a cuddly mascot, Trev embodies the core values that make Rackley tick: fun, patience, and unwavering dedication to water safety.

Trev isn’t just there to splash around; he’s a passionate advocate for fostering confidence in young swimmers, celebrating every milestone and achievement. His message extends beyond the pool, promoting the importance of clean waterways so everyone can enjoy a healthy aquatic environment.

Trev’s engaging presence is a winning formula, transforming swim lessons from daunting dives into exciting adventures. Keep an eye out for Trev the Turtle at your child’s school or daycare, as he, and the Rackley Swimming team, provides engaging free water safety education.

swimmers, seeing the dedication and work ethic required to succeed at the highest levels is an incredible opportunity.”

Ky’s son, Koa, also trains with the Rackley Miami squads and aspires to continue his father’s legacy. “I like getting in the pool with my mates and training hard so I can maybe get ready for the 2032 Olympics. My main goal is to one day be an Ironman; I like distance swimming,” Koa shares.

Little Swimmers BIG Adventures

From an idea conceived in a Caloundra internet cafe to becoming an iconic Queensland swimwear brand, Little Shark Fin kid’s swimwear is renowned for its whimsical prints. However, there is much more to these iconic togs than meets the eye. We grab a coffee with founder Philippa Hayball to learn more about the story behind the brand.

Shark Fin has come full circle since its beginning and is now relaunching with your son! How has the journey been?

Yes! Little Shark Fin was born 13 years ago, out of the need parents expressed to me for quality sun protection in swimwear for their kids. However, juggling business and being a single parent meant putting the business on hold for a short while. But we are back and my 12-year-old son is also part of this small family business.

The prints for Little Shark Fin swinwear are so unique! Where does the inspiration come from?

The swimwear design is a collaboration with my friend JoJo. She is an artist who formerly worked in animation and loves creating whimsical and playful scenes. Our fun and vibrant designs allow kids to express themselves uniquely and creatively. Every print is hand-drawn, giving each piece a unique, fun story. Our designs are so different that they stand out in a crowd!

But it’s not just about how they look, right? The Queensland beach life is tough on togs. What's the secret behind Little Shark Fin’s durability?

We've carefully designed Little Shark Fin swimwear to be durable and maintain its shape to withstand the demands of kid life in Queensland. Our swimwear offers UPF50+ sun protection, chlorine resistance, and fade resistance, making it perfect for extended wear. With kids spending countless hours playing in the sun at the beach, pool, camping, and in backyards, our swimwear is up for the challenge!

When is the new range due for release and what can we expect from the designs?

The new range is due in Springtime. It is vibrant in pattern and colour, each a unique expression for any child wearing them. We can't wait to see these designs out on adventures!

The prints are so gorgeous, will you ever branch into adult swimwear?

(Asking for a friend!)

Haha! Other adults have asked, too! Understandably, adults would love something different and something that expresses their creativity, too. We are working on this… watch this space!

What has the response been so far, and where can people see or enquire about Little Shark Fin?

The feedback has been fantastic! The designs have been a labour of love and imagination, and this shines through when seeing our customers’ responses directly when we do markets like Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast. We are also on Facebook and Instagram and have our full range on our website. Enquiries are welcome at info@littlesharkfin.com

RAISING

Water Babies

We all know that learning to swim is important. But how do you teach that intrinsic connection to water? We chat with Nathan Grieg, surf lifesaver and swim coach from Alite Edvantage, to find out.

Living in southeast Queensland, our kids have a unique relationship with the water. From weekend surfing trips to fishing on the river, the water is a part of our lifestyle. Knowing how to swim safely in a variety of aquatic environments is not just a recreational skill; it’s a necessity.

While swimming pools provide a controlled environment to learn basic swimming skills, the ocean offers a vastly different experience. Waves, currents, and marine life can pose potential dangers if not understood and respected.

Alite Edvantage Swim School understands the importance of connecting pool swimming with ocean safety. Founded by Nathan Grieg, a lifelong swimmer and lifeguard and coach, the Mountain Creek swim school offers a unique approach that prepares children for the challenges of coastal living.

Nathan explains the importance of building fundamental swimming skills early. “Consistent swimming lessons focus on the small building blocks that become second nature,” he says. “We emphasise

individual progress to scaffold the building blocks that develop confident swimmers.” says Nathan. “These building blocks help children stay calm and confident in the water, increasing their enjoyment in the aquatic environment.”

EMBEDDING FOUNDATIONS EARLY

Getting these basic skills embedded early can make all the difference, which is why Alite Edvantage offers free lessons for babies ages three to six months to get kids into the pool as young as possible. An example is instinctively knowing how to breathe correctly. “Imagine a child jumping under a wave and holding their breath, and as they surface, they breathe out and then in quickly. The child feels a little out of breath; they may swallow water which can cause fear or panic,” says Nathan. “Early swimming lessons can teach children to control breathing out under the water so when they surface, they are calmer and breathe air in at the right time.”

Connecting the pool to the ocean is what sets Alite Edvantage apart. The school's instructors have extensive experience

in ocean and competitive swimming, providing a real-world perspective on water safety. This knowledge is incorporated into the lessons, helping children understand the unique challenges and opportunities that the ocean presents.

“Teachers can see what fundamentals individuals are missing and can adjust lessons accordingly. It is easier to adjust swimmers and focus on getting the fundamentals correct when they are young,” says Nathan.

Kids learn about rip currents, wave patterns, and marine hazards, equipping them with the tools to make informed decisions and stay safe in the ocean.

“As Queenslanders, we have a unique opportunity to raise water-savvy kids. By teaching kids these critical skills of understanding the water, reading the ocean, and being in the water being second nature, we're equipping children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in coastal environments. This not only ensures their safety but also opens up a world of possibilities for exploration and adventure.”

SUFFERING FROM AQUAPHOBIA? Is your child

Is your child terrified of water? Many parents of water-phobic toddlers and children find themselves caught in a frustrating cycle of delaying swim lessons, hoping the fear will simply disappear. While it's natural to feel overwhelmed, this fear won’t go away by itself, so it’s important to address it in a caring, understanding and safe way.

According to Kingswim Area Manager Natalie Fletcher, there are several effective techniques for helping your child overcome their fear of water. Once they conquer their fear, they can become confident and competent swimmers.

WHAT CAUSES AQUAPHOBIA?

There are several factors that can cause aquaphobia in kids. As with most phobias, it can be caused by one factor alone, or a combination of several factors over time. These could include:

• Parents passing fear of water down unintentionally

• Separation anxiety (from their parents)

• Anxiety caused by the noise, activity and smells of the pool

• The memory of a negative or traumatic experience in water

• Dislike of getting wet

• Dislike of water going in their nose or eyes

• Seeing an upsetting water-related incident in the pool or on TV

When working to overcome your child’s fear, try to establish the cause of their aquaphobia; doing so will make it a lot easier to address.

HOW DO YOU TEACH A CHILD WHO IS AFRAID OF WATER TO SWIM?

Often children who are afraid of swimming have sensitive, intense or inflexible temperaments by nature. It’s important for you to be positive and relaxed at all times; this helps to take the pressure off them in what can be a very stressful situation.

“Validate their feelings and never be agitated or judgmental when dealing with them. Your patience is also key to helping them to overcome their fear of swimming.”

Make trips to the swimming pool as fun as possible and your child should slowly start to make positive associations with the activity.

If they have a complete fear of water rather than a specific fear of swimming pools, you might want to start with baths and paddling pools.

It could be the case that your child is more scared by the idea of swimming than the actual experience. In these cases, it is essential to take some time to observe the surroundings before they get started.

Natalie says, “Encouraging them to play with water toys on the side of the pool is a great way to build comfort. The next step, if they’re feeling comfortable, would be to do some paddling.”

You will see their bravery and confidence start to increase every time they complete a step. Achieving these small goals will help keep your child motivated, and small age-appropriate rewards such as stickers or small toys will also help.

Consider social anxiety as a potential factor behind a fear of swimming. In such cases, choose one-on-one lessons and opt for a smaller, quieter pool. Professional swimming instructors are trained to recognise and address this fear and use effective techniques to overcome it.

If you have any doubts at all, speak to them prior to the first lesson. “It’s essential not to make their fear of water a big deal,” says Natalie. “It is quite common and perfectly natural amongst children and can be overcome with patience, reassurance and a combination of techniques.

The benefits of EARLY SWIMMING LESSONS

An early start to swimming lessons can give your baby a head start in life, offering benefits both in and out of the water.

Are you wondering when the best time to start swimming lessons is? Starting your child on their swimming journey at a young age can offer numerous advantages, both in and out of the water. Swimming lessons can help foster physical development, enhance social skills, and strengthen the parent-child bond.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Swimming provides a unique opportunity for infants to exercise their muscles and improve their coordination. The buoyancy of water allows babies to move their bodies freely, promoting muscular strength and flexibility. These benefits can contribute to developing essential milestones like crawling and walking. Additionally, swimming has been shown to benefit children with asthma and support healthy cardiovascular development.

SOCIAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Swimming is an ambidextrous activity, meaning it engages both sides of the body. This can help develop gross motor skills,

encourage coordination, and promote brain integration. As your child gets older, these skills can contribute to language development, reading, and writing.

STRENGTHENING THE PARENT-CHILD BOND

Swimming lessons provide an excellent opportunity for parents and children to bond. Sharing this enjoyable activity together can create lasting memories and strengthen your relationship.

A LIFELONG SKILL

Teaching your child to swim at a young age equips them with a valuable life skill and helps them develop a healthy respect for water. This can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure their safety around water.

WHEN TO START

You can begin introducing your baby to swimming as early as bath time. We recommend introducing babies to swimming lessons around five months old when they have good head and neck control and show interest in their surroundings.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CRIES?

It is perfectly normal for your child to cry in their first lesson or any other lesson. Children cry for all kinds of reasons, not only because they are in a pool. The main thing is to relax and settle them while they are in the pool; they should not be taught to associate crying with getting out of the pool. Your instructor can help settle your child— they have done this many times before! Quick tip: try not to schedule swim activities close to nap or feeding times.

HOW BABIES SWIM

While young children might not have the coordination to perform traditional swimming strokes, they can develop unique movements to propel themselves through the water. These movements often resemble crawling or wriggling.

A child’s development on dry land correlates with their capabilities in the water. When teaching babies to swim, the key is to provide them with age-appropriate activities that address their unique needs while fostering independence, all under the watchful eye of an adult.

LITTLE SEED Blossoms

Little Seed Theatre Company is celebrating its 15th birthday this year! This much-loved theatre company has provided a supportive environment for young creative minds to flourish for a decade and a half. We chat with founder Johanna Wallace to reflect on the company’s journey and learn more about what’s in store for the next 15 years.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT IN THE LAST 15 YEARS?

There are so many! I am proud to have established a strong actor training program that provides opportunities for young performers to explore the work of William Shakespeare from Grade 3 through Grade 12. This training process culminates in Grade 10-12 students presenting a full-length Shakespeare production at the Amphitheatre in the Cooroy Botanical Gardens. This year, our production of Hamlet was attended by 921 people, making it both a creative and commercial success. Seeing Little Seed nurturing talented actors and adding vibrant colours to our community’s cultural fabric is amazing!

Other highlights include the two musicals Little Seed stages each year at the J Noosa. To my knowledge, we are the only performing arts training program on the coast that offers a musical just for primary students. Our secondary musicals are well known for their production values and the standard of talent onstage. I’m also proud of our culture. We have a high calibre of coaches who offer excellent training within a kind and encouraging setting.

WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?

The name came from my belief in the creative potential inside of people. Everyone has that ‘little seed’ of potential for ideas, growth, and creative pursuit. If you

can place that seed in an environment where it is nurtured and fed, it will grow in fullness, and this is indicated in our logo, which is a seed cracked open to reveal a person.

HOW MUCH HAS LITTLE SEED CHANGED AND GROWN SINCE YOU FIRST OPENED?

A great deal! When it began, Little Seed had just a handful of classes, and our performances started very organically. It was a side hobby for me, but it has now grown into a family business producing eight major shows yearly.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS?

I’d like a few new branches on the Little Seed tree in the next 15 years. This year, we have begun to lean into creating new work, and I’d like to develop this part of our work to become a yearly occurrence. I love the thought that we could contribute to the body of new work being developed in Australia. We’d also like to develop a touring arm of what we do, taking our shows into regional areas. We have done some of this work this year and learnt a lot, but in 15 years, I’d love to see this as an established part of our yearly calendar.

WHAT’S THE NEXT SHOW LITTLE SEED WILL PRESENT?

Little Seed presents Mary Poppins during

the spring school holidays at the J Theatre in Noosa and The Events Centre in Caloundra. It will be our eighth full-length musical production. Previously, we’ve staged Spamalot, Fame, Beauty, and the Beast (to name a few). We will present four shows over two days on September 20th and 21st at The J. Then we will perform at the Events Centre in Caloundra in October on the 4th, 5th and 6th. This is such a popular and well-loved musical, and every song is a hit. It’s a brilliant family show, and we’d love to see you there! Tickets available at  www.little-seed.com.au

Igniting A LOVE OF LEARNING

Starts with Edge

Edge Early Learning’s heartfelt mission is to nurture young minds, foster a love of learning, and prepare children for school.

Recognising that the foundation of a lifelong love for learning is established during a child’s early years, Edge is committed to going beyond traditional childcare.

Their approach is about creating an environment where young minds can thrive and a genuine passion for learning is encouraged and celebrated.

EDGE’S HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

Edge offers high-quality education and care for children aged six weeks to school age, fostering a love for learning through playbased experiences and resources.

With 34 centres across South East

Queensland, each Edge centre features modern classrooms, state-of-the-art learning facilities, and engaging and spacious, natural outdoor play areas.

One of the highlights that sets Edge apart is the backing of a passionate team of qualified and experienced educators who support and enhance learning milestones and journeys across all areas of development through Edge’s educational programs.

The educational program is built upon four fundamental pillars: education, wellbeing, community, and sustainability. These pillars form the foundation of their approach to early childhood education.

Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths.

“At Edge Early Learning, we understand that the roots of a lifelong love for learning are firmly established in the earliest years of a child’s life,” Edge Early Learning CEO Annie Bryce said.

The roots of a lifelong love for learning are firmly established in the earliest years of a child’s life.

The educational programs are tailored to each age group—nursery, toddler and kindergarten—and encourage children to learn and explore interests across a range of STEAM-based subjects, including Science,

“We encourage children to explore new ideas and learn through play, as we cater to children from 6 weeks to school age and focus on preparing them for primary school, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.”

Edge’s philosophy is centred around a holistic learning style based on inquiry-based learning. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and learn through play.

This approach is supported by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which emphasises play-based learning to guide children toward their developmental goals.

INSTILLING A LIFELONG LOVE OF LEARNING

Starting primary school is a significant change for children. Edge’s Kindergarten program prepares kids for this transition by providing academic skills and nurturing their social and emotional development.

“We’re not just preparing children for school; we’re preparing them for a future where they become confident and involved learners,” Mrs Bryce said.

“We believe in equipping children with the tools they need to succeed academically and personally, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning.”

A fundamental aspect of Edge’s approach is its strong partnerships with local schools. These connections create a seamless bridge between the familiar environment of Edge and the new adventure of primary school so children can step into their next phase of education with confidence and ease.

eating and an active lifestyle within the centres.

Each centre offers daily nutritious meals made by in-house chefs, catering to all dietary requirements. All meals are served in a communal setting to encourage socialisation.

Children enjoy a wide variety of meals, including salads, soups, main courses, and desserts. Some of their favourites are focaccias, pinwheels, chicken curry, spaghetti and meatballs, and burgers that they can assemble themselves.

We’re not just preparing children for school, we’re preparing them for a future where they become confident and involved learners.

“We are conscious that healthy habits ingrained in a child’s first five years will set the tone for future wellbeing, and that’s why we are so passionate about the health and wellbeing of children at a young age,” Annie said.

diverse needs and schedules. Centres across South East Queensland operate up to 12 hours each day, from Monday to Friday.

This allows families and carers flexibility and will enable them to maximise their Child Care Subsidy (CCS) allocation.

Edge Early Learning instils a love for learning that goes far beyond the classroom and empowers children with the tools they need to succeed in school and life.

Implementing the Science of Reading AT PACIFIC LUTHERAN COLLEGE

The Science of Reading is the converging evidence of what matters and what works in literacy instruction, organised around models that describe how and why.

The Science of Reading is a culmination of major research from English-speaking countries that have been consistent in their findings on learning to read and the teaching of reading.

“Learning to read is a complex skill. It requires effective instruction from teachers who are trained to support students from the very beginning,” shares Mrs Sue Zweck, Head of Learning K – 5 at Pacific Lutheran College. “Phonics is crucial but is only part of the solution that would see all students receiving effective literacy instruction.”

Teachers at Pacific Lutheran College make links between speaking, listening, reading, and writing from the start, which helps students connect the dots faster.

One of the main differences between traditional methods of teaching children to read and the Science of Reading research is teaching decoding strategies. In the early years classroom, it is common to teach children a handful of reading strategies that can be used when they get stuck on a word.

THESE STRATEGIES MAY INCLUDE:

• using the pictures for guidance

• skipping over words and coming back to them

• guessing words based on the context of the text

• using the first letter of the word to help.

The Science of Reading research has found that these strategies may not be needed to help children become fluent readers.

“Reading is not a guessing game,” says Clare Wood, Literacy Specialist. “Effective readers use their phonics knowledge to break down words to read.”

“That is not to say that our teachers don’t provide helpful strategies to help a child during reading if they get stuck on a word,” Mrs Zweck adds. “The use of Decodable Readers is really important in implementing The Science of Reading in our classrooms.”

Decodable books are simple books that are written for beginning readers and contain the specific grapheme-phoneme correspondences students have learned.

“This allows our young learners to use

their developing segmenting and blending skills to read words to develop automaticity, or the ability to recognise words quickly and effortlessly and experience independent reading success,” says Mrs Zweck.

Decodable books encourage children to sound out words using decoding strategies rather than guessing from pictures or predicting from other cues. They can be introduced once beginning readers have learned some simple grapheme-phoneme correspondences and can blend from left to right.

The Science of Reading illustrates that sight words are not stored in our visual memory, so they need to be integrated into phonics instruction. Heart Words are an effective, phonics-based approach to teaching sight words.

“Heart Words are high-frequency words that appear most often in print. They are the first words we want to anchor into our students’ memory because they appear so frequently in texts. The ability to automatically retrieve these words allows students to read fluently and successfully,” says Mrs Zweck.

“Pacific students and teachers in Foundation College are enjoying the introduction of this new way of learning literacy. It’s wonderful to be able to access the research and resources to better understand and implement into the students’ learning journey.”

SANCTUARY BUDERIM

ACHIEVES EXCEEDING

Nurturing growth through independence and curiosity at this leading Sunshine Coast early learning centre.

Nestled amongst the tropical hinterland of sunny Buderim, you will find Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure. This child care centre fosters a nurturing environment where children thrive through real-life learning, independence, curiosity and a deep connection with nature.

It’s no secret that the child’s interest and voice are at the core of every learning opportunity and activity. With a consentbased pedagogy, children are empowered through their autonomy and choices.

Recently rated as an 'Exceeding' centre, we visited to see the Sanctuary Philosophy in practice with the children, the environments and the team.

A little over 18 months ago, the Sanctuary Buderim team committed to strive for Exceeding. As you make your way through the centre, you can feel every reason why they’ve been awarded this rating.

“The team have poured their hearts into authentically connecting with the children, the community and each other, which all stems from our Sanctuary philosophy,” says Centre Director Belinda Hammond.

“The opportunity to showcase this to an Authorised Officer was their moment to demonstrate their individual connection in practice.”

Here are the things that we found to make Sanctuary Buderim so magical.

MEALTIME RITUALS

Sanctuary Buderim sees all children as capable and competent, which is why mealtime rituals are embedded from the baby’s studio to the Kindergarten room.

Children are invited to set the table at mealtimes with a tablecloth, real crockery, glassware, flowers and a candle.

This experience sets the scene for mealtimes and provides children with a sense of respect and belonging. During mealtime, children also self-serve and, at times, serve their friends—further establishing their sense of independence and care for others.

CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Sanctuary Buderim is deeply rooted in nature. The centre boasts an active worm farm, a native bee hive, and a bush tucker garden, providing children with first-hand opportunities to engage with the natural world. Tending to real garden beds allows

the children to witness the growth cycle and develop a profound appreciation for the environment. Through these experiences, children not only learn about sustainability but also cultivate a sense of responsibility towards the planet.

ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WITH A PEDAGOGICAL LEADER

Central to Sanctuary's vision is the ongoing professional learning with Kelly Goodsir. The Sanctuary Buderim team has worked with Kelly to deepen their focus on a childled program and consent-based pedagogy, concentrating also on small grouping. By prioritising the interests and agency of each child, Sanctuary creates an environment where learning is meaningful and engaging. Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure in Buderim provides more intentional learning opportunities and care for their children and families. All you need to do is walk

through their front door to see and feel the impact this is making.

There is only so much we can tell you in words and pictures—this is a centre you must visit to feel and see it all for yourself! Get in touch with the team today to organise a tour; call 07 5322 5247 or email buderim@sanctuarylearning.com.au

EMBRACING NEURODIVERSITY A FRESH APPROACH

Once viewed as a deficit, neurological differences are now celebrated as a form of diversity. A new Brain and Mind Hub on the Sunshine Coast is at the forefront of this change.

Ashift in perspective over recent years has transformed how we understand neurological differences. Where once they were seen as impairments, neurodiversity celebrates the different ways our brains work and how people experience and interact with the world.

WHAT IS NEURODIVERSITY?

Neurodiversity is a term commonly used to describe the different ways the brain can wire up throughout development. It is typically used to describe people who have a neurodevelopmental disorder, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or a learning disorder.

Neurodiverse brains process information from the world slightly differently than the neurotypical brain. They experience the world through a different lens, which causes them to react and respond to situations a

little differently, too.

A neurodiverse person often has many strengths and talents that allow them to excel in many areas of life. However, their brain differences can also lead to challenges in navigating the world, and when this occurs, it is essential they receive support.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FEEL YOUR CHILD IS NEURODIVERGENT

If you’ve noticed that your child or teenager has unique strengths and challenges that set them apart from their peers, you might be wondering if they are neurodivergent.

“Difficulties may arise with social interaction or communication, sensory seeking or avoiding, and restricted or repetitive behaviours, interests, or activities,” says CEO, Dr Jim Lagopoulos from Thompson Brain & Mind Healthcare, the team behind the new Brain & Mind Hub in Maroochydore.

Dr Jim Lagopoulos recommends assessing your child for a neurodevelopmental disorder is a helpful place to start.

“Our assessment process will help you better understand your child’s brain—what they find easy and where they experience challenges. If these challenges significantly hinder them, a diagnosis may be made,” says Dr Lagopoulos.

The assessment process at the new

Brain & Mind Hub Sunshine Coast is shaped by an in-depth understanding of neurobiology. It is designed to help each child and their family easily navigate the diagnostic phase.

“The focus is on understanding each child’s needs across different environments and using that knowledge to create a personalised intervention approach, enabling the child to reach their full potential,” says Dr Lagopoulos.

The centre extends care beyond the clinical, with a wraparound approach that provides fully integrated care. “When you seek support for yourself or a loved one, you can access our full suite of services, including group programs, workshops and education.”

“We also work therapeutically with children and their families to implement strategies post-diagnosis, which are founded using the biopsychosocial model of health and wellbeing.”

NURTURING

NEW BEGINNINGS cost-free

Got a baby on the way?

Coast Life Families is offering free antenatal and newborn support!

The arrival of a baby is a time of immense joy and anticipation, but it can also be overwhelming. Navigating the complexities of newborn care, breastfeeding, and the transition to parenthood can feel daunting. But what if you could receive expert guidance and support when you need it most, for free?

Coast Life Families is now offering Sunshine Coast new parents precisely that, with its free Antenatal and Newborn Package, fully funded by Medicare. This comprehensive program provides expectant and new mothers with invaluable care and support from the experienced Coast Life team of child health nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners and lactation consultants.

PREPARATION MEETS PEACE OF MIND

The package begins with a one-hour antenatal appointment, typically scheduled after 34 weeks of pregnancy. While midwives focus on the birthing process, this appointment is dedicated to preparing you for the incredible journey ahead.

“We talk about what to expect in those early days,” explains Jess, child health nurse, lactation consultant and co-owner of Coast Life Families. “From normal newborn patterns to breastfeeding support, we

empower parents to feel confident and informed.”

Jess emphasises the importance of open communication and partnership: “We provide practical tools to help couples discuss how their lives will change and how they can support each other.”

EXPERT CARE WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST

The support doesn’t end there. Coast Life Families understands the challenges of securing a timely seven-day check-up for your newborn at the GP. That’s why the package includes a dedicated seven-day health check appointment with Jess or Jane, a neonatal nurse practitioner.

“We know those first few weeks are crucial,” says Jess. “By offering immediate access to expert care, we can provide reassurance, address any concerns, and ensure a smooth transition to parenthood. Plus, our appointments are one hour long, allowing families plenty of time to discuss their concerns and give us time to assess your child thoroughly.”

SAVING MONEY AND THE PLANET

With cloth nappies

Cloth nappies are kind to your wallet and the planet and are now even easier to use. Here’s how to get started.

Cloth nappies are not what they used to be. Newly improved Modern Cloth Nappies make nappy changes just as easy as disposables. Not to mention, they are surely becoming the cutest, gentlest staples with gorgeous prints and the softest bamboo. And with the opportunity to save thousands of dollars in your child's early years, it’s a win-win for your wallet and the planet.

“We estimate that households save $4,000 by not using disposables during the child's nappy years,” says Rosemary Covey from Cottontail Nappy Service.

At the current birth rate, approximately 23,347,000 plastic disposable nappies will enter the Sunshine Coast ecosystem. Disposable nappies take 200 to 500 years to break down, so every single one will remain on the planet long after your children, grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren are gone.

Plus, disposable nappies contain toxic materials, mostly made from non-renewable plastics, crude oil, wood pulp, and about 30 different chemicals.

“One chemical is Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by some countries as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. It is banned in most countries,” says Rosemary.

Compare that to luxuriously soft suede and bamboo, and Bub’s skin will surely be happier.

“Our cloth nappies differ from other cloth nappies and inserts in that they are made not only from soft suede and bamboo but also use microfibre and charcoal for extra absorbency. Bamboo has a 40% higher absorbency rate, and charcoal acts as one of the world's most natural, super liquid-attracting fibres. That sounds great, but how do you get started?

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTING USING CLOTH NAPPIES

• Enough cloth nappies to last 2–3 days between washing (ranging from 16–32, depending on baby’s age).

• Two large wet bags or reusable pail liners and a nappy pail or bucket.

• 1–2 travel-size wet bags for outings.

• Possible extras: biodegradable liners, nappy sprayer, cloth wipes.

DOES IT STILL SOUND TOO COMPLICATED?

Cottontail offers a nappy service where you can use cloth nappies for your baby, and someone else does all the hard work! It’s as easy as leaving your bag of dirty nappies at your front door and having us exchange it for freshly sanitised nappies.

The hire service kit includes everything you need for your clothing journey. It includes up to 50 modern cloth nappies (MCNs), boosted bamboo inserts, charcoal

inserts (nighttime inserts), a dry nappy pail, wet bags, travel wet bags, and an odour-eliminating shaker.

“Twice a week we pick up dirty nappies and drop off clean nappies to families across the Sunshine Coast. We include a free at home consultation to show you how the nappies work and to answer any questions, and you have unlimited and direct contact with our cloth nappy experts to help you every step of the way. All this for only $45 per week!”

They even have a rapidly expanding cloth nappy service for childcare centres!

“We provide a service for the Child Care and Early Learning Industry, where every child at the centre can be in cloth nappies!” Rosemary adds.

Cottontail even offers personalised bespoke prints for their MCNs. “Each centre has their own uniquely designed nappies, designed to capture each childcare centre’s individuality,” said Rosemary.

Sweet DREAMS

Your baby's sleep troubles solved

Are you struggling with getting your baby to sleep? Baby sleep expert Kate Tronc from Sleep Play Grow is here to answer your questions on uncovering the holy grail of ‘sleeping through’.

WHEN WILL MY BABY SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT?

The million-dollar question! Each baby is different, so encouraging a baby to sleep through the night can vary. It is generally a good goal to aim for between six and 12 months. Keep in mind that "sleeping through" means sleeping all night without needing to be fed or receiving external assistance to get back to sleep. Babies will still wake multiple times, but their ability to resettle themselves between sleep cycles determines when they will sleep through.

HOW AND WHEN SHOULD I TEACH MY BABY TO SELF-SETTLE?

Self-settling is a valuable skill to teach your baby. When babies can self-settle, it often resolves many sleep issues. It's a learned skill that requires guidance and support, and there are various ways to teach it. Your approach will depend on your baby's age, temperament, how they are used to

falling asleep, and what you, as a parent, feel comfortable doing. The optimal time to teach self-settling is between five and seven months, but it's always a good time to start!

DO YOU USE CIO (CRY IT OUT) SLEEP TRAINING METHODS?

No. I never suggest that anyone leave their baby to cry themselves to sleep. However, some babies can get overstimulated by having someone there "putting them to sleep," and often, it can work well to give them some time and space to self-soothe. However, if they get emotional, I suggest going back to give reassurance and support.

HOW DO I GET MY BABY TO TAKE LONGER NAPS?

It's normal for babies to take short naps until around six months old. After four months, it's recommended to help your baby resettle for at least one nap a day to encourage longer naps and prevent chronic overtiredness. To enable longer naps, ensure appropriate awake time, create a sleep-friendly environment, and teach selfsettling at the beginning of the nap. If the baby can self-settle at the start of the nap, there's a better chance they can resettle themselves if they wake up between sleep cycles.

DO I HAVE TO PUT MY

BABY ON A ROUTINE?

The human body thrives on routine. Eating and sleeping at roughly the same times each day helps regulate the body's rhythm and hormones, which then affects physical and emotional development. Babies and children love to know what is coming as it makes them feel safe and secure. Also, consistency breeds consistency. A routine is the way to go if you want consistently good sleep. However, that doesn’t mean you must be home for every sleep or panic if they don't nap for the intended time. They aren’t robots, and we still need flexibility. I like the 80-20 rule of sticking to routine 80% of the time and going with the flow the other 20%.

HOW DO I GET MY BABY TO SLEEP PAST 5 AM?

Pick what time you'd like your baby to start their days (anytime from 6 am is reasonable) and treat any waking before that like a night waking. Key factors that will help in preventing early rising are:

• Bedtime not too early or too late

• First nap of the day not happening too early (ideally no nap before 8:30 am)

• Room and child are warm

• Darkness and white noise are helpful

• Try not to give too much attention at that time of day and leave alone if they are happy lying in bed.

WHAT DOES WORKING WITH A SLEEP CONSULTANT LOOK LIKE?

You have someone with knowledge and expertise in your corner to support and guide you to better sleep! You can block out all the external noise around sleep that you can see on social media or hear from others, and you can focus on what is happening for YOU and YOUR goals. More importantly, it is essential to have someone there to support you through any changes needed to reach those goals. Change can be challenging for everyone, and it is extremely easy to fall back into "old ways" when things don't go as planned.  When enlisting the help of Sleep Play Grow, you would have a one-on-one consultation

with Kate either over the phone or in your home. This is very in-depth and looks at all aspects of life with a baby, not just their sleep, because how they eat, play, and their general day-to-day life impacts their sleep. Kate will then give a plan that is individualised for you and your baby and then support you for two weeks or a month, depending on what package you select, to ensure you reach those sleep goals! Why Kinderballet is the perfect introduction to dance

Looking for a fun activity where storytelling comes to life?

Kinderballet makes ballet a magical adventure for preschoolers.

Is your little one bursting with energy and creativity? Kinderballet is a unique program designed specifically for children aged two to five. It's all about sparking a love of dance and introducing the fundamentals of classical ballet through imaginative play, storytelling, and plenty of fun!

"The biggest challenge with this age group is keeping them engaged," says Miranda Smith from Dance Empire Sunshine Coast. "Kinderballet tackles this brilliantly by using creative movement and storytelling. They learn basic ballet steps while becoming butterflies, pirates, or whatever their imaginations take them!”

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

Kinderballet acknowledges the power of play in early childhood development. It weaves ballet steps and basic motor skills into captivating narratives and imagery. Picture your child gracefully leaping like a bunny or tiptoeing like a fairy—that's Kinderballet in action!

AFFORDABLE AND CASUAL

Affordability is crucial for all families. Unlike some programs, Kinderballet at Dance Empire doesn't need expensive uniforms and they don't force participation in performances. The focus is on fostering a love for dance in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

MORE THAN JUST DANCING: THE BENEFITS OF KINDERBALLET

While Kinderballet is a fantastic introduction to ballet, the benefits go far

beyond learning pliés and jetés. Research suggests that a good quality program can positively impact a child's development in many ways. Here's why Kinderballet is a wonderful choice for your little one:

• Confidence and focus: Kinderballet helps children blossom into confident individuals. The program strengthens their ability to concentrate, a valuable skill that translates into all aspects of life.

• Brainpower: Early childhood experiences are crucial. By age five, 90% of a child's brain is developed. Through movement and music, Kinderballet helps build these critical brain connections.

• Academic and social skills: Studies show that dance programs can lead to better performance in literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Ballet fosters teamwork, communication, and cooperation—skills that shine in the classroom and beyond.

• Creativity and emotional growth: Ballet allows children to express themselves creatively. They learn to translate emotions and ideas into movement, fostering selfregulation and critical thinking.

• A healthy lifestyle: Ballet promotes an active lifestyle, keeping children fit and establishing healthy habits early on. It also increases strength and flexibility, providing a solid foundation for future physical activity.

“Kinderballet offers young children

KICK OFF YOUR KID’S SOCCER SKILLS

Brazilian style!

Played by 250 million people in over 200 countries, football (aka soccer) is the most popular sport for kids. Teaching teamwork, agility, and (of course) being super fun, Sunshine Coast kids can now learn football... Brazilian style!

Of all the countries across the world, Brazil has produced some of the world’s most spectacular footballers. Pele, Neymar, and Ronaldinho are all global role models and sporting icons of their time. And now Sunshine Coast kids can learn to play soccer the Brazilian way, with Brazilian Skills Soccer offering coaching across the Sunshine Coast. Born and raised in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Cesar da Silva has always been passionate about football. He played for competitive local clubs in Brazil and pursued his interest in sports by obtaining a degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching in 2008. Over the years, he has gained expertise in conducting early childhood sports programs

and coaching football for various age groups. Six years ago, he established Brazilian Skills Soccer to share his knowledge and passion with the local kids. Today, Brazilian Skills Soccer has a team of experienced, professional coaches delivering this exciting style of football from Aura to Tewantin.

TODDLER PROGRAM

Kids can join Brazilian Skills Soccer from 21 months old via the toddler program. This fun introduction to sport and football is aligned with the early years learning framework.

“We concentrate on developing general coordination, motor skills, cognitive abilities, communication, social interaction, and emotional skills, as well as introducing basic counting and colours,” explains Cesar.

Practised through fun, play-based activities and games, the aim is to nurture a love for sports and an active lifestyle from an early age. “We are not looking for kids to demonstrate good soccer skills. We’re looking at them having fun and learning, using their imagination to play and be active. They aren’t aware they are playing soccer, we are collecting fruits or driving a racing car with a cone steering wheel!”

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM 3.5 - 5 YEARS OLD

Kids flow into the Brazilian Skills Soccer preschool program from three and a half years old.

“Our preschool program follows the same approach as the toddler years, still based on fun and games. Kids use their imagination to motivate and engage in activities tailored for this age group.”

Children are also introduced to fundamental soccer skills, such as dribbling, running with and striking the ball.

“The program’s core is to maximise playing time and the kids’ contact with the ball.”

“We create a fun environment to motivate the kids. When it’s fun, the likelihood of them all engaging in the activities will be much higher.”

PRIMARY AND CLUB FOOTBALL

Once kids head to primary school, it’s time to move into junior club football. And this is where the Brazilian Skills Soccer program really has the edge. By partnering with Coolum Football Club, they have their own teams in junior leagues—U7s to U11s.

“The kids from our Junior Academy, which

is the next stage from our preschool program, can play for Brazilian Skills teams in the junior leagues. So, instead of playing competitive games separately through different clubs, they now play together as a team,” says Cesar.

“Kids train together, play together and grow together. We have a wonderful team culture, and the program has real scope to provide talented players with optimal challenge and skills development.”

Of course, the Brazilian Skills Soccer program is not just for talented kids.

“We run several schools across the Sunny Coast that cater for all skill levels so that you can learn and enjoy Brazilian-style soccer no matter your stage!”

Also, coaching at Brazilian Skills Soccer continues throughout the year, not just during the football season. Most club teams only train during the season, so kids lose their skills in the off-season.

“Our schools train every week—whether in winter or summer, so the skills and passion for football continually grows!”

“Kids can join us from 21 months old and stay with us until 12. We are a training academy, a club and a place to grow and excel.”

Mini Soccer and Child Development Classes

Fun action-packed sessions for 21 months to 5-year olds

The popularity of futsal has exploded in recent years. Played indoors, this small-sided five-a-side adaptation of football is shorter and more agile than the outdoor game.

Unlike outdoor soccer, futsal is unaffected by rain, and it offers a faster-paced game with usually lots more goals. Played during the Queensland junior soccer off-season, futsal has therefore become a popular choice for younger players.

Being ranked as the World’s number one, the Brazilians really know their stuff when it comes to futsal, and Brazilian Skills Soccer leads the way in futsal skills and development on the Sunshine Coast.

“Futsal demands a unique skill set compared to outdoor soccer and is incredibly enjoyable for kids,” says Cesar.

“We provide futsal skills training yearround to cater to growing local interest. The Sunshine Coast futsal league is booming, and we’re excited to potentially introduce our own Brazilian Skills futsal team next season.”

The program also fosters selfesteem and confidence as children explore their bodies and abilities.

With a strong emphasis on parent involvement in Level 1, Tiny Tumblers provides a wonderful opportunity for bonding while laying the groundwork for future independence in Level 2. As children progress, they will learn fundamental acrobatic skills and prepare for more advanced levels within the Just Acrobatics program.

BENEFITS OF ACROBATICS FOR TODDLERS

Is your child

GRINDING THEIR TEETH AT NIGHT?

Are you concerned that your child might be grinding their teeth at night? Dr Andrew Gikas, a dentist specialising in sleep and bruxism and the relationship between good oral health and sleep health, has expert tips on what to do.

Has your child complained of a sore jaw, headache, or teeth sensitivity? Or has a dentist commented on their teeth showing wear? These could be tell-tale signs of bruxism or teeth grinding, a medical condition characterised by the mouth’s muscle activity resulting in grinding, clenching, or gnashing of teeth.

Bruxism is relatively common, affecting both children and adults. Estimates suggest that approximately 8% to 31% of the general population experiences bruxism at some point in their lives.

Bruxism is particularly common in children, with studies suggesting that up to 38% of children experience it—that’s almost one in four kids. While many children outgrow it, some may continue to grind their teeth into adulthood.

RECOGNISING THE SIGNS OF TEETH-GRINDING

Bruxism often exhibits various signs and symptoms, including:

Teeth grinding: It happens both during the day (awake bruxism) and at night (sleep bruxism), the latter being more prevalent. It starts with a feeling of pressure in the jaws, face or temples and is often accompanied by a grating or grinding noise when the teeth rub against each other as the jaw moves from side to side or clamps closed. Facial discomfort: Persistent jaw pain or tenderness may signify habitual clenching

or grinding.

Tooth sensitivity: Bruxism can erode enamel over time, leading to heightened sensitivity to temperature and sweet stimuli.

Headaches: Grinding strains facial and head muscles, frequently resulting in tension headaches, particularly in the mornings.

Dental damage: Bruxism can cause teeth to fracture, chip, or flatten, necessitating dental intervention for restoration, such as crowns and implants.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF BRUXISM

While bruxism may appear to be a minor inconvenience, its consequences can be more profound than meets the eye and include:

Dental deterioration: over time, bruxism can wear down tooth enamel, leading to cavities, fractures, or even tooth loss.

TMJ Disorders: chronic grinding can strain the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in the jaw (these are the two joints that connect the lower jaw to your skull, sliding and rotating in front of each ear), resulting in pain and dysfunction.

Sleep interruption: sleep bruxism can disrupt sleep patterns, causing daytime fatigue.

Reduced quality of life: facial pain, headaches and dental issues can significantly diminish well-being.

Treatment for TEETH GRINDING (AND THE COST)

The expense of treating bruxism varies based on severity and treatment options.

• DENTAL PROCEDURES: Restorative treatments like dental bonding, crowns, or veneers may be required, and they can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars per tooth.

• NIGHT GUARDS: Custom-fitted night guards can safeguard teeth during sleep. Depending on the materials and level of customisation, they typically cost between $300 and $800.

• THERAPY AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES: counselling or stress management methods may aid in addressing underlying stress contributing to bruxism. If successful, these may eradicate teeth grinding altogether.

• MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS: in severe cases, medications or therapies for underlying sleep disorders or TMJ dysfunction may be necessary, adding to overall costs.

Though bruxism may seem harmless, its impact on dental health and overall well-being can be substantial. If you suspect your child is grinding their teeth, consult your dentist.
