INSIDER'S GUIDE TO KID-FRIENDLY NOOSA

WHAT'S ON FOR KIDS THIS SPRING

ISSUE 113 Spring 2023

Ensuring the kids learn to swim and stick at several seasons of nippers has always been top of my priority list as a parent.

Of course, academia is up there. But being safe in the water trumps them all. Because, not only is it perfect for growing bodies, it will save your life and open the doors to an otherwise wholly inaccessible amazing aquatic world.

I know this because I didn’t learn to swim when I was younger—it wasn’t part of the curriculum in cold and rainy Manchester! And this cavernous lack of aquatic confidence has hung over everything I do as a parent living in Queensland. Snorkelling, taking a boat out on the river, SUP, kayaking, surfing, all the things that are part of everyday life here, and you’ll find me watching from dry land or bobbing around clutching a floaty vest trying desperately to understand how this is fun.

Friends and family often say, ‘Go learn to swim,’ and I have tried with some success. But it will never be the same as

growing up in and around the water. That confidence and innate understanding of the water needs to be ingrained from an early age.

To better understand the intrinsic link between the ocean and the pool, for our cover feature, we spend a day with Alite Edvantage Swim School, whose unique approach combines these two critical bodies of water to provide a genuinely remarkable learn-to-swim program for Sunshine Coast kids.

Of course, one of the most iconic beaches in our region is Noosa. So to kickstart your spring, we have a Noosa Special inside. Kid-friendly restaurants, places to play, walk, create and learn, and much more from the northern end of the Sunshine Coast.

As always, we have the usual news, kidfriendly events, reviews, and more… all inside a super-duper Spring edition.

NEW CHARITY to support locals with ENDOMETRIOSIS AND PELVIC PAIN

A new charity organisation, Magnolia Health, is now active on the Sunshine Coast, focusing on providing comprehensive support and advocacy for people dealing with endometriosis and pelvic pain. The not-for-profit aims to build a community where individuals can connect, find support, and get the resources they need for better health and well-being. By educating the public and fostering understanding, the organisation strives to break down stigmas and promote better approaches to treatment.

According to Alice Paine, founder and director of Magnolia Health, “Endometriosis, a common condition seen by doctors, can cause debilitating pelvic pain and significantly impact a person’s quality of life. Magnolia Health recognises that heavy or painful periods and other pelvic pain symptoms are not normal and should not be brushed aside.”

One of the key initiatives of Magnolia Health is the launch of a community support group tailored

for women with pelvic pain and endometriosis. This group offers a safe space where people can share their experiences, seek support, and connect with others who understand the challenges associated with these conditions.

The organisation also offers care packages for women after surgery, community events, and resources to take control and empower them on a journey to better health.

Alice emphasises, “If you or someone you know is experiencing pelvic pain or suspects endometriosis, it’s essential to seek a referral to see a gynaecologist for an accurate diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan. Remember, you’re not alone—Magnolia Health is here to offer support, guidance, and a community of people who share similar experiences.”

“Together, let’s build a supportive network and create a brighter future for those living with endometriosis and pelvic pain on the Sunshine Coast,” says Alice. magnoliahealth.com.au

FAMILY

FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST

The Sunshine Coast is home to a new photography business that aims to capture families’ special moments in a fun and edgy way.

Tanya Lea’s journey from an amateur photographer to a business owner began several years ago.

“I started getting serious about photography in 2021 when I lived in WA for a short time. My camera was practically glued to me,” says Tanya.

Tanya officially launched her photography business this year due to increasing demand from friends and referrals. “I’ve covered everything from portraits and events to interiors and real estate,” she notes.

Her specialty lies in family portraits. “I really enjoy capturing family portraiture as I love to see the interactions of people and family—the warm, intimate and familiar. I’ll capture those moments for my clients to treasure. They make for the best imagery,” Tanya explains.

Tanya’s approach to photography is anything but standard. “I don’t just point and shoot. If you choose me for a photoshoot, expect unique, fun, and sometimes edgy photos. I have a creative eye and want everyone to enjoy the experience.”

Looking ahead, Tanya aims to continue growing her businesses within the Sunshine Coast community, focusing on local families. “I aim to keep offering high-quality, affordable photography for families here on the Sunshine Coast.”

When preparing for a photo shoot, her advice to families is simple: “Come as your carefree selves. Let the kids play. Laugh. Take the hour to be together and enjoy each other. I will capture these moments and suspend them in time.”

Tanya also plans to expand her horizons. “I have an active imagination and so many ideas. I would love to produce creative portraits for clients in the future.”

FUELLING PASSION :

The forward-approach sports program at Immanuel

At Immanuel Lutheran College, a compelling story is unfolding—a story of transformation, sportsmanship, and personal growth. Kurt Jones, a former Immanuel student, has returned as a Performance Coach and Physical Education Teacher, embodying the core values of the Immanuel spirit.

Kurt’s path took him through different avenues. While he initially considered a path in physiotherapy, his experiences with the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Grammar School shifted his perspective: “The impact within the school setting was more substantial.”

Guided by this newfound purpose, Kurt returned to Immanuel in 2022 with a clear vision: to create an athletic development program that reaches beyond competition. “My goal is to cultivate physical literacy, life skills, and resilience,” Kurt explains,

underlining his dedication to nurturing wellrounded individuals; values aligned with Immanuel School’s ethos. “The whole person is the whole point.”

Kurt’s mission is to empower more students, whether aspiring athletes or wellness seekers, to discover their love for sports.

His dedication goes beyond shaping future champions; it’s about improving children’s wellbeing through being active. As interest in the program surges, Kurt’s enthusiasm is contagious, and he’s thrilled to guide more young individuals toward a life infused with the joy of sports.

Kurt Jones’ journey is more than returning full circle to where his love of physical activity began; it’s a commitment to shaping the future of Immanuel’s sports culture – and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead. immanuel.qld.edu.au

COOLUM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BECOME FACE OF HEALTH EDUCATION

FLINDERS WINS PRIMARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AT THE 2023 AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AWARDS

Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast has been named the most outstanding non-government primary school in Australia.

Health Certificate students from Coolum State High School donned their best nursing scrubs, PPE, and performance faces for the camera recently, becoming the face of quality health education provider Connect ‘n’ Grow’s marketing materials in 2024.

The Connect ‘n’ Grow media team spent the morning capturing students’ infection control practices required for biological matter in a hospital setting.

A Coolum State High School spokesperson said, “This is an incredible honour for our dedicated Health staff, who continue to work tirelessly to bring our school’s Health Certificate programs to the forefront of Health Education in schools on the Sunshine Coast.”

Connect ‘n’ Grow® is a Registered Training Organisation that delivers Vocational Education (VET) in health to high schools across the region.

VET courses are growing in popularity as an alternative senior years pathway, delivering skills and knowledge required for specific industries. Delivery of courses may be in class, online, off-campus, work placement or a combination of these.

Three students from the recent Connect n Grow media event have already secured casual work at Estia Health Mount Coolum, after completing their 80 hours of placement as an AIN healthcare worker while completing their Queensland Certificate of Education.

The Certificate II Health Support Services is one of many VET options available at Coolum State High School. Other courses include: Certificate II in Hospitality, Certificate II in Tourism, Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways, Certificate III in Business, Certificate III in Sport and Recreation, and Certificate II in Engineering Pathways. Flinders won its ‘Primary School of the Year (NonGovernment)’ category in the 2023 Australian Education Awards (AEA), recognising excellence in education.

Head of Primary, Mrs Trudi Edwards and members of the Primary staff accepted the award on behalf of the College at the AEA ceremony in Sydney.

The Australian Education Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the country’s top performing schools, principals, department heads and teachers.

In being endorsed as the top primary school in the nation, Flinders was judged on its:

• consistently high standards of teaching and learning;

• academic and other achievements during the 2022 school year;

• rigorous professional learning to improve teaching and curriculum delivery;

• demonstrated commitment to innovation and continuous improvement;

• strong communication links with students, parents, teachers and the wider community; and

• effective management of facilities, finances and human resources.

“This award recognises Flinders Primary School’s dedication and innovation in providing the highest standards of teaching and learning, and celebrates the dedication of staff who are committed to evidence-informed teaching practices,” Mrs Edwards said.

“We proudly place learning at the heart of all we do, to educate our students so they are of good mind and good heart, and grow into capable, open-minded, compassionate and adaptable young people of integrity.” mfac.edu.au

ROCK POOLS to From

SWIMMING POOLS

A dive into the success of Alite Edvantage Swim School

Three years ago, husband and wife team Nathan Greig and Tamara Scutts embarked on a remarkable journey. Their vision was to establish a family-owned swim school on the Sunshine Coast, where children could build a strong foundation for a lifetime of water adventures. Winning the pool lease at Mountain Creek Aquatic Complex in 2020 and not perturbed by the obstacles of COVID, today Alite Edvantage Swim School is not only up and running but is already one of the most innovative and successful swim schools on the Sunshine Coast.

But what is it about their approach that is having such success with the kids in the water?

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, Nathan Greig has been immersed in the world of swimming since his early years. Moving through competitive swimming, competitive nippers, lifeguarding and coaching, he brings a wealth of experience and understanding to his coaching style.

Unlike traditional methods that focus solely on rigid instruction, Nathan believes in empowering children to explore and discover their own interests within the broad world of aquatics.

“We have a unique approach to coaching where I’m not force-feeding kids what I want them to do,” says Nathan. “Instead, we work with what they want to do, find out what they enjoy, and go down that path.”

With such a deep understanding of all aspects of learning to swim, Nathan can talk to parents with a deeper understanding—

from both the swimmer’s side in knowing the motivation required, and the coaching side in what needs to be done to get there.

THE PERFECT COMBO OF SURF AND SWIM

Due to Nathan’s lifelong nippers and lifeguarding connection, the Alite Edvantage program has the unique advantage of offering that critical connection between the ocean and the pool.

“We’ve got a solid connection with the surf lifesaving community. Many of our kids are in nippers, and many swim competitive pool and surf. Surfing Australia comes in and works out at our pool at times, and we’ve also got a young guy who’s a world-class triathlete,” says Nathan.

Most of the learn-to-swim teachers at Alite Edvantage also come from a lifesaving ocean or competitive swimming background. Many Nathan has coached.

“Our teachers are all exposed to lifesaving and the ocean, some are current patrolling members. So we have a real practical take on swimming for recreation, safety, and plenty of first-hand experience to pass to children,” says Nathan.

This connection between ocean and pool is critical for water safety and awareness in our everyday coastal lives.

“Some families will start nippers and realise very quickly that their swimming isn’t at the level it needs to be. And that’s not necessarily about reaching competition level; that’s just a safety level,” says Nathan. “It isn’t until you get to the beach that you realise the importance of good swimming.”

“I’ve watched Olympics swimmers in the water at the beach on a big day, and they struggled to get in; they just haven’t grown up in it.”

Living on the Coast, it’s inevitable that at some stage every child is going to go to the beach or the river, so it’s critical to educate the whole family on water safety from the get-go. Even in the waterways, the swim school’s focus is always on the progression and experience of its students.

“We understand that they will grow into teenagers, and then one day, they will want to swim and surf with their mates. They may

The ALITE Edvantage Philosophy

• Valuing consistency: turn up even if you don’t want to.

• Teaching resilience: you haven’t got there YET.

• Learning patience: we will get there soon.

• Mastering self-reflection: what small tasks can we do to get to the bigger task?

get their boat license and drive a little tinny on the river. Maybe they want to go fishing or wakeboarding. So it is that long-term safety and knowledge—making sure they understand, teaching them how to assess their own risk at a younger age, being aware of their current skills and knowledge, and seeking skills and knowledge if they need to,” says Tamara.

HOW TO KEEP KIDS SWIMMING THROUGH THE TWEENS AND THE TEENS

Parents with tweens and teens all know the challenge of keeping this age group swimming. The learn-to-swim lessons aren’t

21 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU SPRING 2023 COVER FEATURE

fun anymore, but not every kid wants to progress into squad or competitive swimming.

“We strive to support the ongoing growth of our students,” explains Tamara. “As they enter their early teenage years, we often notice a natural inclination for them to explore specific areas of interest such as pool lifesaving, triathlon, or surf lifesaving, which helps to maintain their enthusiasm and engagement. And these are all things that they can pursue within our club.”

The swim school also focuses heavily on cultivating a sense of pride and fulfilment in personal development.

“We instil in children the understanding that consistency yields improvement. If progress slows, we help them to take a step back and identify areas for improvement while acknowledging effort and success. By guiding students to engage in self-reflection and master smaller tasks, we pave the way for tackling larger challenges. These are life skills that go far beyond the pool.”

A GREATER SWIM COMMUNITY

Another thing that Alite does well is building a sense of community.

“We are focused on giving that personal touch and a sense of belonging to our little community and trying to make it the best possible experience we can for everyone,”

ALITE EDVANTAGE DIFFERENCE

• A multi-faceted Swim Club – from recreational swimming, pool competition to triathlons and surfing.

• It progresses children from three months old through to elite athletes.

• Young children are role modelled on older squad members and can see in others their potential future.

• Children are encouraged to follow their own path to achieve their own goals.

• A strong affiliation to Surf Lifesaving, its squad programs for older children takes into account their nipper program in Summer.

says Nathan.

Central to this is the Clubhouse, where children can go before and after swimming to do activation exercises and meet up.

“Being part of a club keeps them more connected to each other; they’re swimming for a purpose, and they’ve got a sense of direction. They belong together; they’re going through the trenches together.”

IT ALL COMES BACK TO THOSE EARLY LEARN-TO-SWIM YEARS

Of course, the most important element of water safety is attending regular swim lessons. And at Alite Edvantage, this starts at three months old with its free baby aquatic sessions.

“It’s essential for baby to bond with Mum and Dad in that aquatic environment. It gives them something different from their average week; they’re bonding and learning,” says Nathan.

“They’re learning to feel the water and to move their arms and legs in a non-weight-bearing environment, and they’re having fun! It also teaches parents the basics of pool safety early on.”

Having fantastic teachers is also a huge part of Alite’s success in the learn-to-swim pool.

Alite Edvantage has an incredibly diverse team of teachers with a fabulous mixture of youth and experience.

SWIM SAFETY ESSENTIALS FOR KIDS

• Always read the lifeguard board first

• Have a responsible adult with you

• Swim where you can touch

• Swim between the flags

• Never swim alone

• Make sure your parent is watching before you enter the water

• You’re not out there trying to prove anything to anyone. You’ve got to be safe, and you’ve got to be comfortable in what you’re doing.

“Our learn-to-swim manager has worked in England and Australia and knows how to structure a program. Our senior learn-toswim teachers are so loved—they’ve done it for a long time and know how to bond with the kids and parents. And then we’ve got these younger ones coming through that are ex-athletes. They’re just full of personality and life, absorbing everything they’re learning in this environment with these senior teachers and giving a different perspective to young kids,” says Tamara.

And all teachers at Alite bring that additional knowledge of having either come from a background in the surf or the pool or they’ve grown up on the beach.

“They understand what’s needed, and you can’t beat practical experience,” adds Nathan.

NOOSA OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

for little legs

The Noosa region is well known for its stunning beaches. However, this little corner of Queensland is also spoilt for mountains and bush walks… many easy enough for little legs to enjoy.

EMU MOUNTAIN

Let’s start with the most manageable mountain to climb—Emu Mountain. An easy 20-minute hike on a well-marked path, it’s not so much a climb as a gentle walk. Our three-year-old had no trouble running to the top. Despite the easy climb, the views from the top are impressive, along the coast north to Noosa and south to Coolum.

Emu Mountain is also a popular spot to watch for whales passing by during their migration season—from June to September.

MOUNT TINBEERWAH

Just a 15-minute drive from Noosa Heads, Mount Tinbeerwah is another easy climb for the little ones. The 1km round trip offers good views from the top, and the first part of the track is paved, so it’s pram friendly too.

MOUNT NINDERRY

A longer trail of about 3 km round trip, it’s still doable with the little ones if you have a couple of breaks along the way. A lot of the trail is shaded, and there are no challenging parts. There are two lookouts at the top—one north, one facing south. Both are spectacular.

NOOSA NATIONAL PARK

This popular path mixes the best of coastal views and the bush. A stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Hastings Street, this is a popular bush walk for kids.

For little legs, stroll along the stunning coastline to Tee Tree Bay, where there are rock pools to explore and a lovely bay to dip your toes. For those keen on a longer walk, continue the trek to Hell’s Gate or take the inland trail up Noosa Hill (2.8km return). Oh, and watch for koalas chilling in the trees above. You may also spot dolphins and, when in season, a travelling whale or two.

WEYBA CREEK CYCLE LOOP

Prefer to travel on two wheels? Take this 6.5km picturesque ride to experience one of Noosa’s estuaries and the Noosa of old. This mostly-flat path isn’t signposted, so have a map handy. The route crosses Weyba Creek on the charming historical wooden bridge and the soaring new bypass bridge for fantastic birds-eye views of this natural area. It’s a tremendous bird-watching location, so look out for an Osprey that nests in the Weyba Park Mangrove Walk area and Mangrove Gerygones and Striated Herons. This track has several road crossings, but it’s still very safe for families. Park in the Girraween Sports Complex car park off Eenie Creek Road to get there. From there, ride to Eenie Creek Road and follow the cement pathway beside it on the left.

NOOSA RESTAURANTS

Heading to Noosa and want to eat out with the kids?

The Noosa region is home to an abundance of family-friendly eateries—from cheap eats to fine dining, there’s something for everyone. Here are the favourite spots according to the locals.

PEREGIAN BEACH HOTEL

Peregian Beach | peregianbeachhotel.com.au

The PBH is a firm favourite for anyone living on the northern beaches. Its laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff and fabulous food make it a winner for families. For the kids, the bistro inside has a small collection of toys and a kids’ menu with all the staples. For adults, it’s a delicious selection of pub favourites with a modern twist. The cocktails are super yummy too.

SOMEDAYS PIZZA

Noosa Junction | somedayspizza.com.au

Offering a clean menu based on quality sustainability and organic farming practices, Somedays Pizza was named ‘the best pizza on the Sunshine Coast’ by the KOTC minis. Big call, but it’s a fair one… because it really is that good. With a friendly vibe and food that everyone will love, it’s one the locals always go back to.

NOOSA WATERFRONT RESTAURANT & BAR

Noosaville | noosawaterfrontrestaurant.com.au

If you are looking for a family dining experience that’s a little bit spesh, this is the place. With too many awards to list and a stunning riverside location, it’s Noosa dining at its best. Though that doesn’t sound kidfriendly, Noosa Waterfront’s outdoor dining spills into a fabulous little park next door, where kids can play whilst parents watch from their tables. The menu is seasonal Italian inspired and is the magical blend of degustation options, fine wine and menus with colouring in.

SUNSHINE BEACH SURF CLUB

Sunshine Beach | surfclub.sunshinebeachslsc.com.au

The refurbished Surf Club at Sunshine Beach has made the most of its enviable location, offering million-dollar ocean views with a down-to-earth vibe that is great for kids. Relax on one of the decks and enjoy excellent service, delicious meals and refreshing beverages. Very popular with families on a Sunday afternoon.

THE BOAT HOUSE

Noosaville | noosaboathouse.com.au

Though the Boat House is a well-known restaurant and bar, to families this floating venue is all about the takeaway window. Head down to the kiosk to place your order (all food is made fresh), watch the pelicans and birds frolic along the river, then take your fish and chip feast to the Pirate Park for a play and relax. Many local families head here on Friday afternoons after school for dinner and a genuinely Noosa-style start to the weekend.

THE DOONAN

Doonan | thedoonan.com.au

A new pub with a kids’ play area? This has to make the list! Set on two hectares in Doonan, this latest addition to the Noosa area boasts indoor and outdoor dining, bars, beer gardens, a pizzeria, an ice creamery, a cellar door, and multiple function spaces. It already has a play area, slide, and a Springfree trampoline, with more playground plans in the making. The food is exceptional, brimming with pub favourites that the whole family will love.

From little seeds GROW MIGHTY TREES

Providing a nurturing place for creative kids to thrive, Little Seed Theatre Company has grown from a nostalgic thought to a leading youth theatre on the Sunshine Coast. We chat with Johanna Wallace—founder of Little Seed Theatre Company—to learn more about how her incredible passion project has flourished to become an integral part of the Noosa youth community.

Q: WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR LITTLE SEED COME FROM?

Back when I was a teenager, my family moved to Noosa. I started attending theatre classes on Saturday afternoons at the Noosa Arts Theatre. They had a youth theatre company, which I loved. Skip ahead a bit to when I was in my twenties, I would think about how much I’d love to return to my hometown and run a youth theatre, and here we are!

“I started Little Seed to provide a haven for those wonderfully creative souls who don’t always fit the mould.”

experiences from my own youth resonate deeply. It’s a significant part of why I started Little Seed—to provide a haven for those wonderfully creative souls who don’t always fit the mould. The creative spirit often dances to its own tune and doesn’t always fit in the mainstream, so creating a space for them is a massive part of what we’re about. It’s about offering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

WHAT BRINGS KIDS TO LITTLE SEED?

There are a variety of reasons why kids find their way to Little Seed. Some are those diehard performers with big dreams. Then, there’s a significant number of kids who come to us to boost their self-confidence. Some might even be dealing with bullying or not fitting in at school.

I’ve been there myself—those school days when you feel like the odd one out, spending time alone in the library. These

We strive hard to make everyone feel included as much as possible—working with individuals with physical disabilities and ensuring that the LGBTQ community’s kids have a supportive space too. It’s all about carving out a place where every young person feels they belong.

I’m often struck by just how much this place has come to mean to the kids. Parents often say, “You probably don’t realise how much of an impact this has on my child,” which is incredibly heart-warming to hear.

WHAT CLASSES DO YOU RUN?

We run classes from Monday to Thursday in acting, music, theatre, film, and dance across four age groups: Minis (Prep - Year 2), Juniors (Year 4 - 6), Intermediate (Year 7-9), Seniors (Year 10-12). So there are many opportunities for young people to find the right class that fits them. We also run holiday programs every school holiday, and private coaching is available for any student who wishes to excel as a performer. We just started Acting in Film this year, and that’s been fun. There’s a big difference between acting for screen and acting for stage, so we’re really enjoying exploring that.

WHAT PERFORMANCES ARE THE KIDS INVOLVED IN?

As well as being a weekly training ground, we do many shows and are developing a good name within the community for high-quality productions, which I’m so proud of!

Our best-known performances are our annual ‘Shakespeare at the Lake’—a fulllength Shakespeare production at Lake McDonald in the amphitheatre, looking out

28 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU SPRING 2023 THE ARTS

over the lake. We also do a full-length senior musical each year and a junior musical. The junior musicals are based on Broadway musicals but condensed into a one-hour version, so they’re pretty popular.

And everyone is involved! If anyone is in a class, then everybody in that class will have a role. So, for example, we just did Peter Pan Jr. last school holidays and put nearly 80 children on stage—even the really timid ones. Before too long, they always want to perform.

WHY DO YOU FEEL PERFORMING ARTS IS ESSENTIAL FOR KIDS?

The Performing Arts benefits kids in so many ways! It builds confidence and concentration, develops creativity, improves verbal and non-verbal communication skills, develops empathy and emotional intelligence, and encourages teamwork and collaboration.

Of course, the performances set the kids a real challenge each time, pushing and growing students in so many ways. The fulllength versions are a big commitment, they

are no easy task! And then there’s the social aspect too, as kids create new friendships with like-minded peers.

I’ve had many emails over the years from parents saying that their child is getting better grades in English and they’re more confident in their speeches. I remember one child who was being bullied, and after a year of being involved in performing that just stopped because their self-confidence grew so much.

Another told me, “We brought our son to you because he was being bullied, and he just found the most amazing place here and good friends. And it changed his life.”

WHY THEATRE FOR YOU?

I grew up loving stories and theatre, and there’s nothing like it. It’s like a sport for people who don’t want to do sport because it teaches a lot about teamwork and being in the moment. And it’s such an ephemeral art form because it goes on stage, and then it’s gone. It teaches us to be in the moment and give everything we’ve got for just that

second that we’re on stage or working on that project, and then it’s no more. And that’s okay.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING MOMENT?

There are so many things! It’s when you see personal growth within any young performer —something that can look very different from student to student. I remember watching a very shy child get on stage; I was standing in the back of the space with tears because I was so proud of them. And then, we try hard to produce the highest quality work possible, so when you feel like you’ve knocked it out of the park—that is incredible.

Seeing some kids who want to make it their living starting to make inroads in Brisbane is also really rewarding. Last year, some of us went down to Brisbane, and we saw a show directed by a former student produced by a former student starring one of our former students. So it was this fantastic evening of seeing tons of talented kids stretching their wings in Brisbane. That was incredibly special.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD,

Luna!

Missing Ash Gierke from the Hot91 airwaves at the moment? We tiptoe into her newborn bubble to find out how she is going with her gorgeous new little bundle.

SO, TELL US ABOUT LUNA!

She’s here! Luna Darbie Hutchins made her way into the big wide world on July the 10th at 7:06 pm, weighing 3.29kg. (The only time you can talk about someone’s weight!) Her big blue eyes, gorgeous smiles and beautiful nature are everything we wished for and more.

ARE YOU READY TO SHARE YOUR BIRTH STORY?

At 32 weeks, I was getting plenty of Braxton Hicks, multiple sets of false contractions, which we thought, “is today the day?” At 39 weeks, I ended up being induced, thanks to the amazing team at Buderim Private Hospital and Dr Kirsten Morrow. After a four-and-a-half-hour labour and a speedy thirty-minute delivery, she graced us with her presence, and we’ve been over the moon since.

A special shout out to my amazing Brendan, who was very supportive throughout the whole process, to the point of retrieving a booga out of my nose during an intense contraction. I’m not sure if Mia, our midwife, had seen that before, let alone all the giggling that took place while the contraction was happening. (I do not recommend laughing while being in that much pain. It hurt a lot more than I thought it would!)

HOW IS MILLA ADJUSTING TO HER NEW ROLE AS BIG SISTER?

Her big sister Milla, who is two and a half, is extremely proud and very protective. She tells her friends that visit, “You can’t take home my baby sister; she’s mine.”

Since bringing Luna home, we’ve also had the privilege of Milla asking us how Luna was made, how she was made and how Mummy and Daddy were made. We gave her the brief version: “It’s a miracle, you were in our tummy, and now you’re here!” We might save the birds and the bees chat for another few years!

SADLY, GROWING YOUR FAMILY HAS NOT BEEN WITHOUT HEARTBREAK, AS IT IS FOR MANY COUPLES…

The last year has seen our family go on a journey that we never thought would happen to us. Last year on June 24, we lost our baby

boy at 16 weeks. Our pregnancy loss journey saw us come into contact with many families on the Sunshine Coast that had unfortunately been through very similar circumstances as us. We learnt that one in four families suffer pregnancy loss, which is such a heartbreaking statistic. In February, 91.1 Hot FM and my family decided to throw a Butterfly Lunch to raise awareness for Pregnancy Loss and to pull the curtain back on what has always been a taboo subject. Talking about our experience helped my husband and I deal with our loss and look forward to the next chapter that was.

AND WHEN WILL YOU BE BACK ON THE AIR?

I’ll be back on the airwaves full-time in January with my co-host Sam Coward, or Uncle Sammy, as my girls know him by. In the meantime, I’m soaking up the newborn bubble and everything it brings.

OPINION: Reboot your community connectiveness

Despite being increasingly connected in the digital space, the latest Australian Unity Wellbeing Index survey has found that our feeling of community connectiveness is at its lowest in 21 years.

For over two decades, the collaboration between Deakin University and Australian Unity, called the Personal wellbeing Index, has provided valuable insights into our overall satisfaction with life. While the composite measure of personal wellbeing has remained relatively stable, the aspect of community consecutiveness has experienced a significant decline since 2016, with scores dropping from 73.2 to 68.23.

This decline calls for reevaluating how we foster community engagement and build social bonds. Fortunately, local libraries have long stood as centres of community consecutiveness. A place for parents to meet their ‘tribe’, socialise at events such as Storytime and Rhymetime, and enjoy all the

school holiday activities and adult programming on offer. If you are new to the area or need information, the library is still one of the best places to connect families to services, and you will always find a welcoming space that fosters a sense of belonging to the new community. Libraries are not mere knowledge repositories but are pivotal in promoting inclusivity and equity within our communities. They are accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status, background or age. Providing a level playing field where individuals can access educational resources and information. For those lacking internet access or unable to afford books, toys and movies, libraries become invaluable refuges, offering free access to play, literacy, and entertainment.

Adapting to the digital age, libraries have embraced technology to expand their reach and connect with community members beyond their physical spaces. Online platforms, virtual events, and e-book lending services have transformed libraries into community connectors, enabling individuals to access resources and participate in programs from their homes. This hybrid approach ensures libraries remain relevant and accessible, even in an ever-evolving world.

As we navigate an increasingly interconnected yet isolating society, we must recognise and celebrate the pivotal role that local libraries play in fostering community connectiveness. They cultivate social bonds, ignite a love for learning, and champion inclusivity. Their physical and virtual spaces weave the fabric of our communities together. By supporting and being active in these community hubs, we can reverse the declining trend of community connectiveness and build a future Sunshine Coast in which our kids can thrive and belong.

LET'S ROCK!

school is igniting a love for rock ’n’ roll in kids

There’s no denying it. Guitars are cool. Whether you are into rock, EDM, hip-hop or punk, guitars will always take the Number 1 spot in the coolness rankings. However, the work required to learn to play the guitar is not always as cool as the end result.

Until now.

Because there is a new guitar school in Buderim, Sunshine Coast, with a fresh approach to guitar lessons, and we are hooked!

WHAT IS MATRIX GUITAR SCHOOL SUNSHINE COAST?

After decades of playing in bands and teaching guitar, Jeff Willbanks lives and breathes rock’ n’ roll. And this legendary rocker is on a mission to ignite that love for music in Sunshine Coast kids through his unique guitar lessons.

Matrix Guitar School is different from most in that group sessions are the norm.

“Most people think solo music lessons are best to learn to play guitar, but they’re not,” says Sally Willbanks, co-founder of

WHY LEARN TO PLAY THE GUITAR?

Matrix Guitar School. “Children, in particular, have much more fun and get much more out of group classes.”

But it’s not only the fact they are in groups but also how Matrix Guitar School groups the kids that makes the difference.

“We take a few different levels and put them in the same class. So they’ll be playing the same songs but different parts,” says Sally.

they play better and learn more.”

Kids learn a bit of the history of music during the kids’ guitar lessons too!

Learning to play an instrument is excellent for memory

It develops agility, coordination and fine motor skills

It stimulates both the left and right sides of the brain

It increases IQ, boosts concentration and improves focus

It relieves stress and provides a creative outlet

It builds confidence and discpline

You can use it in many ways: sing and play; play electric, acoustic or bass; play alone or in a group

It’s cool!

“The beginner might play the basic chords or the bass line, whereas the more advanced kids are playing, strumming more and fingerpicking more. So it becomes a homogenous group, as each kid learns to play guitar at their own level.”

“The kids see the same group weekly, becoming friends. So, we are finding it quite a great social aspect for them,” Sally adds.

Jeff noticed that, with this approach, kids keep returning to his guitar lessons.

“When I changed to this structure, the kids seemed happier; they didn’t quit as often. They’re having fun and getting better too.”

SESSIONS ARE ALWAYS FUN!

Jeff and Sally wanted their guitar lessons to be more meaningful than the typical weekly music lessons for kids.

“The social aspect is a huge part of learning to play guitar with Matrix. This is why we called it a guitar school, not guitar lessons,” explains Sally.

“With other kids of a similar age, they start chatting, their shyness is gone, and

“Jeff will teach the kids the history of rock during the sessions and give them background on some of the greatest rock bands, such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd,” says Sally.

And this is the music they also learn to play each week.

“We play the fun stuff they’ve all heard in commercials and movies. A lot of Rolling Stones and things like that, and it’s that type of music that you can’t help but hear all the time,” Jeff explains.

This relatability feeds into kids’ success from the get-go.

“I make sure that kids feel success straight away. We start on a simple song — the Jaws theme song or something that’s just a few strums. And they leave their first class saying, ‘Hey, I’ve learned a song!’.”

“Doing this each week, you string it together and keep coming back. You get better and better, and you feel that accomplishment. The growth, satisfaction and creativity never stop.”

This experience with music is something you can never get from watching videos on YouTube or following a songbook.

“Nothing beats having someone show you up close how to do something, then you mastering it with a group of peers and jamming together,” says Jeff.

Group lessons enables kids to experience what it is like playing in a band.

THE POWER OF PAWS

Therapy through play, paws and psychotherapy

With play therapy, animalassisted therapy and psychotherapy under one roof, P3 Sunshine Coast is making a paw-sitive change to the therapy journey for all ages.

When Jodi-Maree Cronin retired from her job as a doctor and started training assistance animals, she quickly realised the many ways that dogs could change lives. Not only for their ability to open doors, fetch items and assist their human but also for the difference they make simply by being present.

PLAY

Child-centred Play Therapy (CCPT) is a proven way to help kids aged 4-12 struggling with their emotions, behaviours, and relationships. Kids use their natural way of talking—playing—to share their feelings and thoughts. This happens in a safe and caring environment, where they can express themselves when they can’t find the right words.

Landreth,

“Just having them around to co-regulate makes a difference to people,” says Jodi. “They’re a safe other. They live in now, they don’t judge, they don’t hold grudges, and they enjoy the moment they’re in.”

Realising this positive impact, Jodi decided to combine her medical background and her assistance dog training to provide a life changing therapy service that combines play, paws and psychotherapy, all under one roof. We take a closer look at the unique blend of P3 therapy.

“Traditional talk therapy doesn’t work for younger children—they communicate through symbolism and play. They’ll play through scenarios until they rewrite the script. Part of facilitating child-centred play therapy is to help them get to that point where they can rewrite the script,” says Jodi.

At P3 there’s the option of including animals in CCPT providing both the animal and the child are consenting. Ultimately safety determines if one the dogs is invited to participate in a play therapy session.

“There are almost no rules in play therapy, So they’re allowed to express themselves in the play room without judgement.” says Jodi.

CCPT is a well-established form of therapy

for young children, and adding in the comfort of a dog can make that difference to break through certain barriers.

“Through the process, they can label feelings, allowing the child to express themselves in a more regulated, adaptive manner in the real world,” says Jodi.

PAWS

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a way for teens and grown-ups to achieve their therapeutic goals using interaction with animals. This means watching and spending time with animals, almost like teamwork with the dog to reach the goals you want in therapy.

“Many people think it’s simply talking as you cuddle a dog, but it’s not that at all!” says Jodi. “It’s not about always touching the animals. Instead, we focus on how animals can model good relationships and boundaries. During the psychotherapy session, we spend around 20 minutes with the animals. They might play, or if they agree, they might interact directly with you.”

Because the animals model safe relationships, they’re a medium through which teens can communicate.

“It’s amazing what you get out of five minutes with somebody if you know what to ask and what to use as a model out of the interaction with the animal!”

AAT can be very successful for teenagers and adults with anxiety, depression, ADHD, ASD, or those having problems with relationships at school and kids with a history of self-harm.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Of course, not everyone likes dogs! So Jodi also provides regular psychotherapy sessions for anyone who prefers fur-free therapy.

Next Level ADVENTURE

Soaring family fun at Australia’s ultimate high ropes park!

Did you think the high ropes course at Sunshine Plaza is just for the teens and grown ups?

Think again because this epic adventure park has courses for kids from six years old. And yes, it’s fun for adults too!

Located at Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore, Next Level is Australia’s largest high ropes course.

The courses come in four levels. So when you are standing underneath, looking up and wondering what to do, remember: the higher you climb, the more challenging it becomes.

Don’t worry, staff are there to monitor the towers, and grown-up supervision ratios apply.

Children ages 13 years and over can climb without an adult. But that’s no reason to sit out! It’s a fantastic activity to do as a family.

If you have non-climbers in your group, spectators can head up to the Viewing Deck, where you get a birds-eye view of all the courses. Visits to the Viewing Deck are free!

This epic adventure park also offers superfun birthday parties, group bookings and KidZip sessions during the school holidays—where the Next Level team take kids (aged 6-12) on supervised climbs. So there are plenty of ways to climb, whatever your bravery level and ages.

So now there’s no excuse, what are you waiting for?

Mums and dads are amazing. We are multi-tasking superheroes who can simultaneously soothe tears, create a healthy lunch, magic up a book-week costume and hold down a demanding job.

But let’s face it, we never look after ourselves. And as life gets busier and fitness is continually further out of reach, self-care often goes in the ‘too hard’ basket.

CircStudios aims to turn that around by bringing fun and self-care back into parents’ lives at their purpose-designed aerial fitness studio in Warana. Whether you’re a seasoned aerialist or just dipping your toe into this unique approach to health, CircStudios has crafted a program that’s as empowering as it is entertaining.

This gravity-defying, confidence-boosting, strength-building experience is tailor-made to be the antidote to parents’ daily juggle—

DEFYING GRAVITY with aerial fitness

Looking for a new approach to fitness for parents that will make your heart race and your spirits soar? We say goodbye to the mundane treadmill and hello to an accessible workout that is perfect for busy parents, as we fly high for a session at CircStudios.

energising your body and rejuvenating your soul without the grind of the gym.

Class instructor Lisa came to aerial fitness after having three children and being unsure of what her body could do after a six-year break from training.

“In the first aerial yoga session, I had no idea how I would go! But I found aerial yoga did all the physical things that I imagined it might do in terms of decompressing the spine, lengthening and strengthening my body, but what I didn’t know that it would do is give me the mental health benefits,” says Lisa.

CircStudios runs two aerial courses: aerial yoga and aerial arts. Both are aerial in nature, but their focus and outcomes are slightly different.

AERIAL YOGA

Lisa describes aerial yoga as the complete

proactive package for health and fitness.

“There are benefits for the body in lengthening, strengthening and moving. Then the mental health benefits of relaxing, switching off, challenging yourself and having fun are invaluable.”

Most importantly, aerial yoga is accessible to all ages and fitness levels—new mums can do it too, once they have post-partum signoff from the GP to start exercising again.

“Aerial yoga for me was such a gift just to fill my cup up so that I could continue to do mum things and be what I needed to be,” says Lisa.

“It’s joy, it’s mental health benefits, it’s physical benefits, and it’s a super-supportive and encouraging community as well.”

When compared to traditional yoga, the differences are remarkable.

“The hammock acts as a supporter—it supports your body, or it can challenge it.”

50 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU SPRING 2023

“It acts as an alignment tool, so you can gauge more body awareness by how the hammock feels on you and then align certain parts of your body within the hammock,” explains Lisa.

“Then, it’s also sensory—you’re getting continual feedback from the hammock about where your body is. As adults, we’ve lost a lot of body awareness, where our body is, and how to use it. The hammock acts as a guide and gives us a solid tool to continue to grow in body awareness,” adds Lisa.

And then, of course, there is the aerial component, where you can achieve inversions quite effortlessly. With the benefits of being upside down and traction, spinal health is one of the main benefits people can experience.

“When you are inverted, there is zero compression on your spine. All of your

organs, lymphatic system, and digestive system refresh. So it’s almost a kickstart to your system, releasing a whole lot of endorphins.”

AERIAL ARTS

Aerial arts is a more strength-based workout for those that like a challenge! Being more physical, you will build strength, flexibility, aerial awareness, and release lots of endorphins.

“Aerial Arts will completely flip your perspective on fitness! You will experience amazing strength, vitality and confidence like never before,” Lisa says.

CircStudios offers a fiveweek beginner course to teach you the fundamentals of Aerial Hammock, Silks and Lyra. Experienced instructors guide you through various tricks and techniques on each apparatus to help you build strength

and flexibility whilst gaining confidence in the air.

OUR VERDICT

Honestly, we are hooked! The studio is welcoming, friendly and with zero judgement. Aerial yoga doesn’t have the spiritual side of traditional yoga, which is very refreshing, as the intensity and emotional expectation can be off-putting for many looking for something more fun. Because, in a nutshell, that’s what it is—floaty, fabulous, fitness fun. You will laugh, make friends, challenge yourself, put yourself first and be blown away by how amazing you feel when you leave.

“After their first session, people are always surprised at how good their body feels and how much they need movement, joy and relaxation in their lives,” says Lisa. “Mums young and old often say when they leave: “Oh my gosh, that was amazing! I achieved what I didn’t think I could, had fun, and felt so relaxed.”

BENEFITS OF BALLET FOR TODDLERS THE surprising

In a world filled with technology and fast-paced activities, introducing toddlers to ballet’s elegance and slower pace might seem unconventional. However, this art form for athletes offers many benefits that can shape young minds and bodies— physically, socially and mentally. From nurturing creativity to building confidence and coordination, ballet provides a wonderful foundation for toddlers to explore and grow.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Enjoying ballet from a young age positively impacts a child’s physical development. Toddlers can experience improved balance, strength, posture, flexibility, coordination, increased bone density, and long lean, strong muscles. These structured exercises also encourage the development of fine motor skills, strength, and spatial awareness.

COGNITIVE AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Ballet fosters cognitive and emotional development in toddlers. The discipline of learning ballet steps and routines stimulates memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. promotes creativity, allowing toddlers to express themselves through movement and music. As they explore different emotions and narratives, children develop their imagination and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.

SOCIAL SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE

Participating in ballet classes introduces toddlers to a structured environment to interact with peers and instructors. Through group activities, cooperation, and teamwork, children learn valuable social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and respecting others.

VOCABULARY

There is a world of new words to encounter in the dance studio! Stretch, bend, wiggle, head, toes, knees. An experienced dance teacher will turn the studio into a full-circle learning space where little ones learn about their bodies, healthy living, and the world around them in a fun and engaging way.

BALLET ISN’T JUST FOR GIRLS!

It’s time to shake off the stereotype that boys don’t like ballet. All children love to dance!

WHY CHOOSE KINDERBALLET™?

Kinderballet™ is unique in that the children learn classical ballet steps and develop all of the valuable skills listed above through imagery and story-telling. Our programs are strongly influenced by current pre-school education trends in teaching through play, acknowledging that pre-school children are a highly imaginative age group with pretend play being an important aspect of child development. Through this, Kinderballet achieves the perfect balance, delivering a class that is lots of fun and one in which you learn and develop.

Debunking common pregnancy myths

Pregnancy is a transformative and remarkable journey. However, it is surrounded by numerous myths that can cause unnecessary worry and confusion. Obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Kylie Isaacs is here to kick those misconceptions to the kerb.

MYTH 1:

‘YOU MUST EAT FOR TWO DURING PREGNANCY’

One of the most prevalent myths is that pregnant women must eat twice as much as usual. The truth is that calorie requirements during pregnancy only increase modestly. Most pregnant women require an additional 300-500 calories daily, depending on their pre-pregnancy weight and activity level. Focusing on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is more important than consuming excess calories.

MYTH 2: ‘YOU CANNOT EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY’

Exercise during pregnancy offers numerous benefits, including improved mood, reduced pregnancy discomfort, and better overall health. Unless expressly advised by a healthcare professional due to medical concerns, most pregnant women can engage in moderate exercise. Activities such as walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and lowimpact aerobics are generally safe. It is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate exercise routine for your circumstances.

MYTH 3: ‘MORNING SICKNESS ONLY HAPPENS IN THE MORNING’

Contrary to its name, morning sickness can occur at any time. Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are not limited to mornings and can persist throughout the day. The exact cause of morning sickness is not fully understood, but hormonal changes and an increased sense of smell are believed to play a role. Fortunately, most cases of morning sickness resolve by the end of the first trimester. In severe cases, medication and lifestyle modifications can help manage the symptoms.

MYTH 4: ‘HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY MEANS YOUR BABY WILL HAVE A LOT OF HAIR’

While it may seem intriguing, the amount of

heartburn experienced during pregnancy has no scientific correlation with the amount of hair on the baby’s head. Heartburn is caused by hormonal changes and the growing uterus pressing on the stomach. Genetics and ethnicity determine the hair growth of the baby, not the presence or absence of heartburn.

MYTH 5:

‘YOU SHOULD AVOID ALL SEAFOOD DURING PREGNANCY’ Fish and seafood are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for the baby’s brain and eye development. However, certain types of fish may contain high mercury levels, which can harm the developing foetus. Limiting the consumption of high-mercury fish such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish is advisable. Instead, opt for low-mercury fish like salmon, shrimp, trout, and catfish, which provide the benefits of seafood without the associated risks.

MYTH 6:

‘YOU SHOULD AVOID ALL CAFFEINE DURING PREGNANCY’ While limiting caffeine intake during pregnancy is important, complete avoidance is unnecessary. Moderate caffeine consumption, equivalent to about 200 milligrams per day (approximately one cup of coffee), is generally considered safe. However, it is crucial to note that caffeine is found in various sources, including coffee, tea, chocolate, and some soft drinks. It is advisable to monitor overall caffeine intake and opt for decaffeinated or low-caffeine alternatives whenever possible.

When in doubt, consult a trusted healthcare professional who can provide evidence-based guidance tailored to your needs.
