I

t seems like only yesterday that my kids were newborns – waking every few hours, smelling a-m-a-z-i-n-g whilst spewing on everything… and completely turning my world upside-down!

Was I ready?

Hell no.

Do I know what I’m doing now?

Not even close.

But what hit me most about life as a new mum was the lack of support. As friends disappeared quicker than a round of shots at 9pm, and with no family nearby, I was lonelier than I ever thought possible. And decisions on routine, sleeping, breastfeeding, and parenting, were all made on zero sleep and with zero knowledge yet with maximum guilt and worry.

So, this issue is a high five to the new mamas out there, with our Babies Special! We’ve gathered the experts together to share their tips and tricks on some of the key areas for the first 12 months, to hopefully make your newborn journey a little easier.

For the busy families heading into spring, we have a huge feature on Learn to Swim, with the essentials on water safety and getting kids back in the pool. And our Education feature looks at the importance of nurturing the potential of gifted and talented kids.

We also sit down to chat to Dr Karl to discover what he thinks the future holds for our kids, and with Halloween just around the corner we’ve got some fun Halloween treats that little hands can make.

GC ROCKS A rock-filled craze is sweeping Southeast Queensland, getting families outdoors and exploring!

Believed to originate in New Zealand, the idea was brought to life on the Gold Coast by Mermaid Beach mother of three, Amanda Shannon.

“The idea behind GC Rocks is to encourage creativity, get families outdoors, and create a sense of community along the way,” said Amanda.

The concept is simple. Decorate smooth rocks and hide them around the region for others to find. When you find a painted rock, take a photo and share it on the Facebook group for others to see.

PREGNANCY BLOOD TEST BREAKTHROUGH A wide range of fetal genetic abnormalities could soon be detected in early pregnancy thanks to a world-first study.

From about five weeks into the pregnancy, fetal cells originating from the placenta can be found in a mother’s bloodstream. The technology can now isolate these cells from the mother’s blood and collect them for genetic analysis.

Combined with LOC technology (lab-on-a-chip) it’s hoped these tests will be able to reliably detect a greater range of genetic abnormalities.

The ever popular Funky Forest is bigger and better and will be home to the Sun Stage with lots of exciting activities for kids.

Nestled under the shady trees of Kings Beach Park, there’s fun for kids of all ages with daily workshops, sports, games, face painting, yoga classes, jumping castles, arts and crafts activities.

Kids (young and old) are invited to dress up in their favourite costume and come create, play and explore!

Moving out of Funky Forest, the kids can build some sand castles, while you listen to some great tunes at the Sand Stage.

Grace Lutheran students take to the skies with the RAAF Simulator

Broadbeach State School Grade Six student, Olivia Shannon, has been selected to be a part of a three-year ‘Contemporary Instrumental Music Excellence Program’ at Miami High School. This program is the only one of its kind in the region.

Olivia’s love of music started at a very young age and through the years the young student has gone from strength to strength.

Workshops will be facilitated by JMI (Jazz Music Institute) Brisbane, a specialist jazz school delivering courses in jazz and contemporary music since 1997. JMI enjoys a reputation throughout Australia as one of the best jazz institutes in the country.

Supermarket strawberries can sit for quite a while, so you don’t know how old they are.

They have to be picked, packed, transported to the distribution centre before they are then shipped on to the store. It could be anything from 2-6 days before they hit the shelves.

CAN YOU FREEZE STRAWBERRIES FOR THE OFF SEASON? Yes, you can certainly freeze strawberries!

However, because strawberries are mostly made of water, they tend to collapse when they thaw out. So, frozen strawberries are most suited to smoothies and desserts.

• 1 pre-made tart shell (or buy from the supermarket) • 1kg strawberries, washed and sliced • ⅔ cup caster sugar • 1 cup water • 4 tbsp cornflour • 4 tbsp strawberry jam DIRECTIONS

• In a saucepan, mix sugar, water, cornflour and jam and place on a medium heat.

Stir until boils, then remove from heat.

• Add sliced strawberries into the mixture and gently stir until well coated.

• Pour into tart shell and chill in fridge until well set.

• Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

and what to expect by six months old

S

ix months is the pivotal age where many families feel their baby ‘should’ be sleeping through the night. Everyone tells you that the first six months are the hardest and once they get on solids they’ll sleep through. This is not always the case and there are a few factors that come into play when looking to achieve a sleep through at six months.

“How do I get my 6-month-old to sleep through the night?”

Good days mean good nights, so the very first thing to look at is your daytime routine.

It is expected that most babies of this age are still taking three naps. Wake time is approximately 2.5–3 hours between sleeps, but may be less if you have a cat napper on

your hands. At this age, sleep windows really do come into play. This is not the duration of wake time but rather the time on the clock. These windows are between 9–10am and 12–2pm, and emerge from about four months old. As long as bub is napping within these windows and getting approximately three hours sleep across two or three naps, your nights should not be negatively affected. There is a need for a nap around 4–5pm but there is no sleep window here so I recommend doing this one in the pram, car or carrier for only 20 minutes to see bub through and prevent overtiredness.

Once you have got your day routine in place, then look at settling and self-settling.

A baby that can self-settle is more likely to sleep through the night. You can do this without leaving your baby to cry alone and can work as slowly and gently as you feel necessary for your baby’s personality and your comfort level. For example, if you are currently feeding to sleep and bub is waking six times a night to feed and you know

they are not hungry, work from there. Stop feeding to sleep on a feed when you are certain they aren’t hungry and instead try holding to sleep, settling on the bed next to you, or getting your partner to settle in arms. From there into the cot to stroke, pat or hold hands to sleep, then just using your voice, and so on. This process can take a week or five weeks depending on how slow you go. The most important thing is being consistent each time you change the level of intervention you use.

Another method is pick up bub each time they get upset, calm down then replace in the cot. This method works well for a four- or five-month old, but the up/down motion can get overstimulating for a bub from seven months old and you are better off settling in the cot. Of course, a dark room for melatonin production, sunlight between naps during playtime, white noise, introducing a comforter and a nice wind down before bed and nap times are always part of the process.

“How many feeds should I be doing at night?”

Some babies that are not well established on solids may still take two feeds overnight.

Some bigger babies at six months may need three feeds overnight if they have not started solids at all. Do not force the process before they are ready! Often parents notice a big increase in feeding (and night feeds) when bub is ready for solids and milk may not satisfy alone. Once bub is well established on solids (over 4–6 tablespoons worth of food per meal) with productive daytime feeds, and they are gaining weight and meeting developmental milestones, you can look at dropping to one feed overnight, which often happens naturally with the solid increase. It is important to balance

your meals for bub and include some protein (small amounts) starting about 6–7 months with lunch to help stabilise blood sugar at night. Often once the protein is added, the second night feed can be dropped. Go slow, don’t want bub getting constipated do we!

Don’t give protein at dinner, their digestion isn’t ready and this can actually cause night wakes from a sore tummy.

Please remember that babies are not robots and they all have different personalities! They will all ‘catch on’ to selfsettling differently, will have a slightly different routine, meet milestones at different times, have varying interest for solids, and please please try not to compare.

“Can developmental milestones such as rolling, sitting and starting to crawl affect my babies sleep?”

Absolutely! However, it does not mean that you go back to the start if you have been working on self-settling. Just recognise that sleep is a little harder at this time. Give them some extra comfort, or an extra nap or an earlier bedtime rather than going back to feeding to sleep, if you have been working to eliminate this as part of your sleep goals.

Thankfully today’s cloth nappies are super-easy to use and it’s estimated they add just five minutes to a typical day! Scrape any solid waste into the toilet (which you do for disposables anyway).

Using biodegradable flushable liners makes this super-easy. Then store the dirty nappies in a nappy bucket. When you are ready to do a load of washing, empty the nappies into the washing machine and wash. Most parents do a wash every 2-3 days.

The average cost to nappy a child for two years in disposable nappies is $1800. You can buy a generous set-up of cloth nappies for $300–$500, most of which should last two or more children. So cloth nappies cost about one tenth that of disposables.

A R E T H E R E A N Y H E A LT H CONCERNS FOR USING DISPOSABLE NAPPIES? Disposable nappies contain traces of dioxin, an extremely toxic, carcinogenic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. They also contain tributyl-tin or TBT, a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals, and sodium polyacrylate, a super-absorbent

polymer that is highly toxic when inhaled and ingested.

WHAT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS? It is estimated that it takes about 250500 years for a disposable nappy to break down, which is long after your children, grandchildren, and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone. Though disposable nappy instructions say that all faecal matter should be deposited in the toilet before discarding, less than 1% of all

waste from single-use nappies goes into the sewage system, which adds raw faecal matter directly into landfill. As well, the nappy production has a huge impact on global energy and pollution too.

et’s get real, this motherhood gig is not an easy one. And to make things harder, sadly in our society, pregnancy and motherhood are often represented in idealised ways. From glorious pregnancy photoshoots to Insta-ready newborns, the reality of baby life can be far removed from that initially imagined.

If a woman or her partner’s expectations are very different from reality, it can result in adjustment difficulties, and this can lead to depression and anxiety – both pre- and post-natal.

Postnatal depression can affect 1 in 10 women whilst they are pregnant, and 1 in 7 women during the first year after birth (beyondblue.org.au).

Postnatal depression is not your fault. You’re not a bad person, you’re not a bad mother and you are not alone. Sleep deprivation alone can cause significant impacts on your general mood. Couple that with the trauma of birth, social isolation and an adjustment to motherhood, and these can all cause difficulties in coping with your new role as a mum.

SIGNS TO WATCH OUT FOR ARE: Sleep disturbances (trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps), including insomnia, early morning waking, excessive sleep.

Changes in appetite (not eating or overeating).

Persistent and generalised worry.

Feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, emptiness or failure as a mother.

Feelings of anger, guilt, resentment, shame and irritability.

Thoughts of suicide.

POSTNATAL DEPRESSION IS NOT YOUR FAULT. YOU’RE NOT A BAD PERSON, YOU’RE NOT A BAD MOTHER AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Here are some strategies you can put in place in pregnancy and the postnatal period, to reduce your risks: 1. Establish realistic ideas of pregnancy/post baby life. Re-evaluate what can really be achieved with a new baby in the house.

2. Establish a relationship with a health professional. Talk to your GP, initiate a referral to see a social worker or psychologist to engage in talk therapy.

3. Avoid major upheavals. If possible, avoid changing jobs, moving house, renovations. This can be a source of stress.

4. Discuss expectations of pregnancy and parenthood. Many factors can influence a person’s ideas about parenthood. Discussing these expectations and coming to a shared understanding can reduce the chance of any disappointments.

5. Get finances in order. Losing an income for a period of time and the extra costs of a new baby can result in added stress. Know the position the finances are in beforehand.

6. Gift substitute. Suggest to friends or family a service instream of a gift such as a cleaner, or pre-made meals.

7. Division of tasks. Work out who is doing what in your household.

Looking after a baby and carrying the mental load for the family can cause significant overwhelm.

Is it time to ditch the dummy?

A

common concern among parents is whether a dummy is bad for a child’s dental development, and when it’s a good time to call in the ‘dummy fairy’. Many of the children that come through the Gold Coast Dental & Dental Centre do have issues with their teeth and jaws from sucking a dummy as an infant and toddler. The most common issue associated with dummy sucking is the development of an anterior open bite – where the front top and bottom teeth don’t touch when the back teeth bite together. Similar to thumb sucking, the impact of sucking a dummy depends upon the intensity of sucking, how long the dummy is used for and also how often. An older child who has a dummy in their mouth all day is much more likely to have issues than a four-month-old baby who uses a dummy just to go to sleep. Although there is a huge range of dummies on the market claiming to be ‘orthodontic’, there are few that don’t interfere with growth of the teeth and jaws, and cause issues with speech and feeding.

Here are a few important tips: • Try to only use a dummy when you’re trying to calm your baby.

• If you are worried that going ‘cold turkey’ will be too distressing, try gradually weaning until the dummy is limited to just sleep time.

• When you feel ready to remove the dummy at sleep time, a soft toy or blankie can be a gentle alternative to help them settle.

• Try to remove the dummy by six months old. That’s when babies start eating solids so they need to develop their chewing muscles.

Enhancing bonding, strengthening the immune system and calming a colicky baby, baby massage is known to have many benefits. Alisa Caddey, registered midwife from My Baby Bubble Spa shares her tips on how to get started.

B

aby massage can be done from birth onwards. You can do it as often as you like, when the baby is receptive to being touched. Start with just a few minutes and work up to longer sessions.

Before starting, look for cues. If they pull your hands towards you of maintain eye contact then they are happy to massage. If they turn away, squirm or cry, then leave it for another time.

Start with long gentle strokes from ankle to hip. If they are happy, then massage baby’s feet gently from heel to toe. Even just strokes and cuddles are important sensory stimulation and great for bonding, so the best things to do is simply touch and interact with your baby. It’s always best to learn the basic techniques at a class. We teach all the basics you need so you can go home and be confident in your massages at home.

Remember, sucking is developmentally normal in babies. But as babies grow, they grow out of it and learn the skills to chew, so try to ditch the dummy before they are a toddler. At this stage, children are trying to learn facial expressions and speech so it is up to us to give them a chance to do that.

hether it’s the backyard pool or salty days at the beach, aquatic activities are a huge part of family life in Queensland. And as we head into spring, families across the region are dusting off their togs ready to dive in once more.

However, a critical part of enjoying life by the water is water safety.

The Royal Life Saving Drowning Report of 2017 (royallifesaving. com.au) found that 291 people drowned in Australian waterways from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017, and a further 685 non-fatal drowning incidents occurred that resulted in hospitalisation.

Sadly, 29 of those drowning deaths were children under five years old, and 12 were children ages 5–14.

One of the best ways you can protect your child from drowning is learning to swim and water safety education. Cameron Speechley, General Manager of Rackley Swimming says, “If you can increase your child’s aquatic skills and teach them to swim, you are giving them every opportunity to recognise potential problems but also get themselves out of potential problems.”

The essentials of learning to swim The process of learning to swim can start from a baby’s very first bath. “Introduce your baby to water from birth,” Cameron recommends. “The bath helps them to become accustomed to the feeling of water. Don’t be scared to get water on their face, as this leads to them becoming more comfortable in the water and then onto breath control.”

Swimming lessons can start from two months old, with simple splash and play sessions. “These group sessions are a great way to introduce your child to being in the water whilst also being safe in a parent’s arms.”

The next stage is about recovery, balance and buoyancy, where children hold onto the side and begin to learn about water safety

elements such as a safe entry into the water, turning around and getting back to the side and climbing out. “They will also do things such as ‘monkey walking’ around the edge of the pool, so they learn how to safely get from one end to the other.”

Once these skills are mastered, children move onto propulsion and movement, where they learn to work through different depths and plains.

Once that is achieved, it’s onto more formal strokes, treading water and building up endurance.

All kids learn at different rates, so don’t compare a child to others of the same peer group.

“A lot of water confidence and how quickly a child learns to swim depends on how much exposure the parents give the child to various aquatic environments,” says Cameron. “Do they take the kids to the beach, do they go in cold water, do they go into an uncontrolled environment. All these factors will mean different outcomes.”

Royal Lifesaving Australia recommends that children should be able to swim 400 metres continuously before ceasing swimming lessons, and Cameron believes that this should be the minimum. “We recommend a child continues in swimming lessons until they can swim 1km, as this gives them the endurance they need to cope with a rip,” he says. “And even then, they should keep their swimming up on an ongoing basis. Swimming is more than a pastime, it’s one of the few children’s activities that will save their life.”

Water safety

As well as the mechanics of learning to swim, a large part of water safety is educating kids to be safety aware in and around water. “Our learn to swim program focuses heavily on educating the kids – such as teaching them not to go swimming without a parent and not without your togs on,” Cameron explains. “And parents also have an active role to play in this, ensuring they continue to teach this at home.”

This is followed up with basic reach and throw rescues, and the messaging of always ‘Yell and Tell’, rather than jumping in the water to help someone.

“The older the kids get, the more important this water safety messaging is. They start to head into more dangerous situations so they need to know how to keep themselves safe,” says Cameron.

For parents, supervision is the most essential part of water safety.

“If a young child is in the pool, then you must be in the pool with them,” says Cameron. “Even once children are older, they should still always be actively supervised when in the water.”

For a group of children, such as a pool party, Royal Lifesaving states that one of the smartest ways to supervise children is to have a designated supervisor. They suggest the supervisor should wear a ‘Designated Child Supervisor’ Hat and if that supervisor leaves they should hand the hat (responsibility) over to another adult to take over.

Getting the most out of your swimming lessons

Swimming lessons can be a wonderful opportunity for quality time with your child, so try to give it the time it deserves. Rather than rushing to lessons, Cameron recommends allowing plenty of time so the child has time to settle into the environment.

“When parents arrive rushed and stressed, the child also feels stressed and goes into the lesson feeling anxious.”

Once the lesson is over, stay for some free play in the wading pool afterwards. “This is great for kids who are apprehensive,” Cameron says.

“Kids will learn for themselves, if they are allowed to explore and play.”

For cautious children, Cameron recommends increasing the frequency of lessons. “There is a great advantage to doing two lessons a week. We tracked two groups through the school – students who attended twice a week and those who came once a week – and those who attended more frequently learned 3–4 times faster.”

SWIMMING LESSONS CAN HELP PREVENT DROWNINGS Having a child that is skilled at moving through the water, and confident around water, is the best way to reduce the risk of accidental drownings.

Particularly here in Australia, where recreational water activities are extremely popular, this is an even greater priority.

A US study found that children aged 1 to 4 who had participated in formal swimming lessons could have a reduced drowning risk of 88 per cent.

Alice Williams

Water Polo is rapidly gaining in popularity amongst Queensland kids.

We chat to local 20-year-old Alice Williams from the Aussie Stingers to find out what it takes to get to the top of the water polo world.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN WATER POLO, AND HOW OLD WERE YOU? Mum had us swimming from an early age, so I always like being in the water, and once I got my technique right I was a strong swimmer.

But I was 10 years old when that love for water led me to trying water polo – both my sister and I started playing for a club that a family friend was a member of. I was immediately hooked; I loved the competition!

I started out playing for my school, and had a great run with coaches. Then from there I was selected for my first nationals in 2014.

so much fun! Then to add heaps of elements to swimming as well as the physicality of the game – it really drew me to it. Also, I’m very competitive and I love competing alongside 12 other people. So, I’m incredibly passionate about all aspects of water polo.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE SPORT? I love everything! I love the water but also used to play a lot of netball when I was a kid So, the fact I could have a ball in the water was

groups above me, I started to think ‘I must be alright at this sport!’ So, I just kept pursuing it. When I first heard that I had a chance of making the Australian team all my sights were set on that. That’s all I wanted to do.

W H AT D O E S A T Y P I C A L D AY O F TRAINING LOOK LIKE? In a camp situation we’d have two pool sessions a day of two and a half to three hours. And then we also have about an hour and half of gym, every other day. When at home, training includes swimming three times a week, a gym session three times a week and of course water polo games as well – which are happening constantly.

International season, where I play for the Aussie Stingers, is April to September. So, we need to be at peak fitness all year round!

So anytime I’m feeling flat, I just remind myself to keep just keep going – I remember my goal of getting to the Olympics and the feeling of being able to be there, and that keeps me motivated.

WHAT ARE YOU TRAINING FOR NOW? I’ve just come back from Europe where the senior team were training for three weeks and preparing for the World Cup in Russia later in the year. That’s our main focus as the World Cup is the biggest competition of the year.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I study – I’m at QUT doing a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences. And I also do some coaching when I can find the time. I play a lot of social sports with my friends – such as touch and netball. I also love a bit of Netflix – my favourite show right now is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But mostly, I sleep! Whenever I get chance to get to bed I hit the pillow hard!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO FIT STUDY IN AS WELL?!

Yeah, it’s a juggle, and can pretty difficult sometimes! Uni is really helpful and supportive, and I’m only studying part-time so I have a

aising children is no easy road, and the everyday challenges parents face can be quickly exacerbated if a child has a chronic disease. Chronic health conditions in children include allergies, asthma and developmental delays such as weight gain and delayed walking or talking.

Unfortunately, chronic disease in children is on the rise. However, if these chronic conditions are recognised early then an action plan can be put in place for their ongoing health management which should hopefully minimise the impact on the child’s life.

Reviewing development at key age milestones can identify red flags early in development. Though a single red flag does not necessarily indicate a developmental delay or need for referral or special care, it is worth discussing with your family GP. A page on the Queensland Health website lists questions that can help give insight into your child’s chronic health, development and wellbeing. It is called PEDS or Parent’s Evaluation of Development Status, forming part of your child’s personal health record.

The questions are intended to be reviewed at six months, 12 months, 18 months, 2.5–4

years and 4–5 yrs. The children’s health website www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au also has valuable fact sheets for children’s health covering a wide range of issues.

The fact sheet on food allergies includes symptoms like wheezing, stomach upsets and skin rashes. Eggs, milk and peanuts are responsible for 75 per cent of childhood food allergies. Another fact sheet on preventing allergies suggests breastfeeding until at least four months, then continue breastfeeding while introducing foods. It recommends introducing common allergy causing foods (such as eggs and seafood) within the first 12 months to reduce the chance of developing allergies. This fact sheet includes a four-step home test that parents can do to check for food allergies.

Identified issues can be discussed with your family GP who can determine if referrals to allied health or specialists may be beneficial in their development. Your child may be eligible for a care plan that entitles them to five subsidised allied health visits.

Common allied health professionals include: occupational therapist, speech pathologist, audiologist, physiotherapist and dietitians.

Care plan reviews can occur three or six months after the start of a care plan to review progress and allow alterations to the plan.

There are many groups and activities which encourage children to play and reach their developmental milestones. Sensory groups are a great forum for kids to get their hands dirty and play with new and exciting textures and sensations. Parent groups provide opportunities for mums and dads to support each other. In addition to sensory play, activities like swimming, play groups and ‘little’ team sports can build confidence and build motor skills. These activities can also help instil important social skills in kids.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SCHOOL OR DAY CARE ENVIRONMENT Young people with autism may need a high level of support to participate in their education. In 2015, 55.8%* of young people with autism needed special tuition and 41.8%* need help from a counsellor or disability support person.

Jill recommends looking for a day care setting or classroom where they have an understanding of the condition.

“Opportunities for quiet spaces within the classroom or day care setting are important if they become overwhelmed with sensory stimulation,” suggests Jill. “Also, flexibility in teaching styles such as allowing headphones for quiet working to reduce noise and improve concentration, allowing movement for those sensory seekers or, if restless or active, giving permission for rest or movement breaks.”

Educators who are able to take the time to get to know your child individually and tailor learning as much as possible is the ideal.

WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE OUTSIDE SCHOOL? There is lots of support out there! Start with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP and seek support from your local psychologist. Early diagnosis can also bring funding for Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy, if required.

“There are many psychologists who also support children individually and parents to understand the diagnosis and work with children to learn emotional regulation,” says Jill.

“And there are psychologists who will support families with parenting strategies to help reduce frustration in the home when distraction or impulsivity is occurring.”

HOW TO SUPPORT SIBLINGS It’s important to work with siblings to help them understand the diagnosis. There are resources and books available to help with this from the library, your local support network, or your psychologist.

“Ensure some one-on-one time with

siblings, particularly if things have been difficult in the family prior to diagnosis,” suggests Jill.

Jill also believes that self-care for parents is critical. “It can be a highly stressful time for parents and families so taking care of themselves is very important. Find some respite if possible, with grandparents or extra time in day care,” she says. “Calm and rested parents means calm responses and better parenting. This helps contain children and their emotions which improves their wellbeing overall.”

rom 2012 to 2015 the number of Australians with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) rose from 115,400 to 164,000*, an increase of 42.1%. This upsurge means more and more parents are faced with the worry of what to do following a diagnosis of ASD. Thankfully, there is plenty of support out there to help families navigate through this difficult time.

Jill Cumberbatch from Dandelion Clinical Psychology for Children believes that one of the most important first steps as a parent is to understand what this means for your child and how it affects thinking and behaviour.

“If, as a parent, you are able to grasp why your child may have responded to a situation, your response is likely to be the most helpful to your child,” says Jill. “For example, children with ASD often have much anxiety around change and transitions.

Things that don't go as the child expects can cause them to feel increased anxiety, leading to emotional or behavioural reactions that can be very stressful for all the family.”

If you can predict and prepare your child for the change through using things such as visual planners and pictures, this can help them feel ready for the change, and cope well.

• Slice the cheese sticks into thirds.

• Using scissors, or gently separating

• Insert a bread stick into the un-cut end of the cheese stick to make the broom handle.

DIRECTIONS

• Peel banana and cut in half.

• Push the cut end of the banana onto the stick.

• Add 2 chocolate chips for eyes and 1 chocolate chip for the mouth.

DIRECTIONS

• Slice apples into slices around 15mm thick.

• Spread cream cheese on one side of an apple slice.

• Stick on marshmallows in a row (like teeth).

• Spread cream cheese on the side of another apple slice and stick on top.
