There’s been several changes behind the scenes at Kids on the Coast/in the City in the last month, with the previous owner deciding to move onto new things and myself and Helen taking the plunge to take ownership ourselves. We are super-excited to see where this journey takes us, so watch this space for the many plans we have in the pipeline. Talking COMMUNITY, this issue we are looking LOCAL, where we celebrate everything amazing about our region. We check in with a few mums across the region who have made the bold step to launch their own business and find out the secrets behind their success. Our EDUCATION feature visits two local schools using psychology methodologies in the classroom with impressive results, and we share an amazing creative project from one local photographer whose latest venture is to tell the unique motherhood stories of 50 women. We also get ready for the summer break, stepping beyond our immediate doorstep to explore the many highlights on offer across the region that are only a day-trip away. 2017-18 WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED The hugely popular Woodford folk festival has released its 2017-18 line-up, and there’s stacks for every festival-loving family this year. Over 2,000 individual performers will play across 35 venues ranging from the 25,000seat amphitheatre to smaller, more intimate venues like Bill’s Bar. As well as headline names such as John Butler, The Beautiful Girls, Holy Holy, Husky and Kate Miller-Heidke, a record number of performers will make their first appearance at the Woodford Folk Festival this year. For families, the line-up at the dedicate Children’s Festival doesn’t disappoint. There’s puppetry and fun with the Amazing Drumming Monkeys, stories to share with Bella the Bookworm, and crafts and creativity with ROCKADABADO, Painting with Bubbles and Play with Clay. If you are looking for entertainment, Miss Mimi will be there to leap, laugh and dance with the entire family at her creative dance workshop, or be amazed by Terry the Great, pirate extraordinaire and extreme juggling champion. FIRST CHILDCARE CENTRE TO OPEN IN SURFER’S PARADISE AWARD-WINNING THEATRE WORKS TO BE ADAPTED FOR QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS Queensland Music Festival (QMF) has revealed its 2018 Youth Touring program that will bring some of Australia’s most exciting award-winning artists and works into Queensland schools. QMF Artistic Director Katie Noonan said her team had scoured the country for the best possible productions, and was working with some of the country’s most innovative companies to adapt work for school audiences. "The quality of the work we will be bringing into schools in 2018 is so exciting. We have listened to teachers and ensured the program meets curriculum needs and surpasses expectations.” A reworking of the powerful Australian play Black Diggers, two works by internationally acclaimed hip hop artist and theatre maker Candy Bowers, and some marvellous prehistoric megafauna all feature in the 2018 Youth Touring program, which will

Council has approved a new childcare centre to open at Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre, the first facility of its kind to service the heart of Surfers Paradise.

“The proposed Chevron Renaissance childcare centre will become the first facility of its kind in central Surfers Paradise, demonstrating our long-term commitment to the residents and working parents of our Gold Coast community,” he said.

Expected to launch in 2018, the new facility, to be operated by Rise Early Learning, will have capacity for 88 children and be housed within an expansive repurposed floor space on the second level of the CBD complex.

Students from Clover Hill State School in Mudgeeraba, Queensland have beaten hundreds of thousands of other students across Australia and New Zealand placing ninth in the inaugural Matific Games – a maths competition run by leading online maths resource Matific.

Rise Early Learning Centre Manger Mel Comerford said the centre would be a place where children will feel safe, secure and nurtured to play and learn in a close knit, home-like environment. “Our vision is to create an early learning environment that will be an oasis for children and their families, right in the heart of Surfers Paradise.”

Brent Hughes, former teacher and Teacher Educator at Matific said, “The idea behind the Matific Games was to introduce a fun and engaging way for primary school kids to enjoy and learn maths and we are absolutely delighted at the level of enthusiasm and participation we’ve seen from this first event.”

Chevron Renaissance Centre Manager Gerard Coorey said the new facility would provide an innovative childcare solution in the heart of the Gold Coast, catering to professionals working in Surfers Paradise as well as young families living in the worldrenowned beachside community.

The Matific Games was based around participation by students and teachers using the Matific education resource. During the competition, students took part in over 7 million maths activities in just under two weeks. Winning schools, students and teachers will share a prize pool of over $50,000.

The Light of the Moon

With the aim of bringing women together and celebrating the beauty of motherhood, a Sunshine Coast photographer has embarked on an inspirational story-telling project called ‘The Light of the Moon’. The project is a curated series of written stories and intimate black and white imagery depicting the motherhood journeys of 50 Australian women. ‘The Light of the Moon’ Project aims to explore and acknowledge each mother’s significance in the world in her role of raising a child. These beautiful stories are therefore both unique and incredibly powerful. As a seasoned photographer, and mother of two, motherhood is one of Peta’s favourite things to document with a camera.

“The bond between a mother and child is incredibly beautiful to watch,” Peta explains. “In its ups and downs, in the closest moments and the most distant… I get lost in the connection, the intricacies, the unrelenting love, the courage, the devotion, the resistance, the curiosity, the compassion, the confusion… the holding tight, the letting go. And what makes it even more magical, is that all of it is fleeting – for a short time, yet for a lifetime.” Aiming to truly ‘see’ and celebrate women at some of their most vulnerable, precious and sometimes uncertain times in their lives, this

project is an empowering one, capturing beauty and strength; sharing moments that help make mothers realise that each of our journeys are significant, powerful, and beautiful. In today’s world where we often don’t slow down to share our stories and are often battling to find our similarities rather than celebrate our differences, Peta aims to bring the art of storytelling back to life. This beautiful and important project is gaining momentum and, as it unfolds, the community of women becoming connected by its honesty is rapidly growing.

I didn’t think I’d have anything significant to say about motherhood. But the more I found the courage to open up to other mums, the more I realised I wasn’t alone. The amazing gift of birthing a child is beyond magic. Yet with all of this can come chaos, uncertainty, self-doubt and guilt as we want so desperately to be the best example of strength, love and harmony we can to our little people, and to raise loving, level headed, kind and confident human beings. As a mother of three, I understand perfectly the pressures of getting this ‘right’. It is so easy to fall into a spiral of questions and doubt about the very important ‘job’ we do. We often put ourselves last, our hair unwashed for longer than it should be, our eyes weary and our bodies not recognisable as our own for quite some time. We are filled with so much love for our babes but can question our place in the world. Motherhood is an incredible thing, we must take time out to stop and remember that. It’s finding that balance between steam-rolling ahead to get things done, and pausing to cherish the endless beauty along the way. I believe we not only need to embrace our own journeys as mothers, but share them with others so that they feel that they are not alone. ONE CHEW THREE Why did you start One Chew Three? I was maternity leave with my second son. Mid-way through maternity leave I felt like I wanted to do something that challenged me; I wanted something that was for me, but also something that supported my family. I’d also only recently come across silicone jewellery and couldn’t find one that I really liked, so I designed one. And that’s where it all began! A month into it and there was no looking back – it really ignited something inside of me. 20

I’d always been creative, but it just gave me an opportunity to follow a passion I never really knew existed! Now, after 18 months, I have 240 resellers worldwide, I make 1,200-2,000 handmade pieces per month, as well as designing a manufactured line. So, it really is crazy!

What makes your business unique? I design jewellery that is modern, funky, and so it doesn’t feel like you are wearing something intended to be safe around baby. The whole concept is a little softer and natural, as we all seem to be moving towards living a little more naturally. We also now offer personalisation so the teethers can be a lovely and practical keepsake.

What do you think is the secret to your success? The growth happened organically, but I’ve been in corporate marketing for 15 years so the way I positioned and grown the brand certainly contributed to the success. The Internet and social media certainly make it easier to get the exposure and give you the momentum. The customers are also really supportive, they are mums like me! We want to shop with people we connect with and we have our roots in the community.

You’ve also won a few awards recently, congratulations! Yes, I was a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Awards, which was an honour to be recognised in that. And I won Gold in the handmade category of the national AusMumpreneur awards, which was amazing.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I spend a lot of time working, but I love the flexibility and I find it really satisfying. I think it’s very much about finding something that you are passionate about. As the kids grow up so fast you realise that you want to savour every possible moment, so I really aim to balance my work with my family.

passed away five years ago – with that comes a lot of depression and turmoil. Leading up to the start, I often wondered, ‘is there a better way to be supportive of mums?’ I didn’t have a great support system and I when I wanted to do something for myself – take a yoga class or a creative class – I couldn’t find anything that I could take her to. So, I decided that I would fix that! And that is when the journey began!

Tell us about what The Mama Project does? The whole theme is about slowing down, being more family based with soothing, natural activities that you can share with your kids. With this, we connect mums with other mums, and connect children with carers – whether that is Mum, Auntie, Grandma or Dad. The mama and youngster yoga classes include storytelling, yoga games, music and a nature-based craft activity, perhaps even something we've collected from a nature walk. Family yoga classes will be added late 2017 and will be an opportunity for the entire family to explore gentle yoga together, including grandparents!

And you support other community projects too? Yes, a portion of any money from the Mama Project goes to the Phoebe Foundation or another foundation that helps women and children in the area. The Phoebe Foundation provides craft kits for Sunshine Coast Hospital, funded in NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

Why do you feel that embracing a slower pace of life is important for mums? We are so frantic. We have gotten to the point in our lives that we feel like we must prove something. Having the kids, the career and getting there on time – it’s marvellous, but do we really need to have it all? We need to put less importance on the material things and realise that what we are doing is enough. We don’t have to sacrifice, we just need to prioritise, as we are totally burning ourselves out, which isn’t helping anyone. As parents, we are their ultimate role model. So, let’s take a step back and think ‘What do I want my children to see?’ We are raising the future peacemakers of the world, so let’s find ways we can be gentler on our earth, and have kindness in our hearts, teaching our kids that there is happiness within ourselves.

LITTLE MONKEY GREASE What inspired you to start Little Monkey Grease? It started mainly because my son has such bad bed hair… it was always all over the place! We wanted him to have the coolest hair, just like Daddy, but adult wax was way too strong for him – kids’ hair is so fine and soft, we didn’t want to use chemicals.

you get genuine mums sharing quality products. They wouldn’t put up something they don’t believe in as they know someone else will use it on their own child. I’ve found that lots of mums are now choosing to step away from the commercial products and shop this way for their family instead, which in turn helps these small mama businesses flourish.

How do you juggle running a business and being a mum? It is definitely a struggle sometimes, particularly as my husband is FIFO (fly-in-fly-out)! But I have automated processes that help me get through and I have incredible family support. But I really enjoy it too – I get a true enjoyment from the product because its mine, and I brought it up as a baby.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I enjoy the open interaction with customers – other mums and parents. Being able to connect with people and show them a genuine product that is safe and good quality is really satisfying. I always feel confident in telling them about it and letting them try it! But I think my favourite thing is when new people discover what we do and getting positive feedback on the product.

LITTLE MONKEY GREASE

I looked up some recipes for hair wax to make yourself, and after trying about seven or eight different recipes, I put the best ingredients I’d found into a wax. It ended up as just three ingredients, no essence, no nasties, so it just smells like coconut – and that product became our baby wax! All my friends started asking what I put in my son’s hair and a few asked me to make them some… and it just evolved from there!

How quickly has it grown? Before I had plans of starting it as a business I thought I’d try it out on social media. So, I put it up on Instagram and it just went crazy! Hundreds of likes in the first few weeks… I couldn’t believe it! Because it just started as word of mouth, through friends of friends, I never intended things to grow so much as much as they did! Social media is huge and I’ve found this market a very genuine one – especially when kids are involved. Usually, 22

PSYCHOLOGY in the CLASSROOM

AS EDUCATION PRACTICES SHIFT TOWARDS A MORE HOLISTIC STYLE OF LEARNING, MANY SCHOOLS ARE LOOKING TO PSYCHOLOGY TO BUILD POSITIVE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENTS. IN THE HOPE OF BETTER EQUIPPING OUR KIDS TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES AND BE HAPPIER PEOPLE AS THEY GROW UP, THERE ARE NOW SEVERAL SCHOOLS ACROSS THE REGION WHERE PSYCHOLOGY PRACTICES UNDERPIN THEIR ENTIRE SCHOOL CULTURE. GLASSER CHOICE THEORY To help them better understand behaviour, Sunshine Beach State Primary School has been using William Glasser’s Choice Theory as their psychological base since 1994, and in 2003 they became the first Glasser Quality School in Australia. A Glasser Quality School (GQS) primarily functions in three ways: actively building quality relationships, providing a need-satisfying environment, and encouraging all learners and staff to achieve to their potential. And the psychological base to this is Choice Theory. Choice Theory is Dr William Glasser’s explanation of how and why we behave. Even though most people around us operate from an external control perspective, Choice Theory offers us a way to understand how our behaviour is motivated internally and that we are driven to meet our needs. 24

“Choice Theory can be taught to anyone who is capable of understanding what a choice is,” Dr William Glasser explained. “All through our lives we make choices… we make choices that help us get along with people in our lives, and we make choices that harm us. In Choice Theory, we want to make mentally healthy choices… we believe that there are good things to choose.” When put into practice in the classroom at Sunshine Beach State School, the impact was significant. “We saw a huge change in the school,” said Gerard O’Brien, Intensive Self-management Support Officer from the Student Services Team at Sunshine Beach State School. “We were able to connect with those kids that we’d had issues reaching; we were able to build better relationships, teachers were happier, families were happier, and learning outcomes jumped through the roof.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

Building relationships is at the core of Choice Theory. “Teachers put a lot of energy to create a safe environment for the kids; to build trust and get to know every side to the child,” explained Jenny Easey, Principal at Sunshine Beach State School. “Once this exists, when we ask them to do something, they want to do it.” Choice Theory brings with it a common language that is used throughout the school. Everyone knows what is meant when they talk about ‘filling a bucket’ and all the teachers are on the same page. “By looking at what happy people do and think and speaking to each other in a common language to achieve this, we can help kids grow towards those things and think those things,” Gerard said. Rather than forcing kids to learn and behave, and using punishment to achieve this, Choice Theory works from a different angle. Instead of an environment based on a coercive culture, where the aim is to get the kids to do what the teacher says, this theory focuses on self-directed learning. “The kids manage themselves, their behaviour and their learning. We are helping kids get to the point where they are helping themselves; they own their own behaviour,” explained Gerard. “Choice Theory gets kids to recognise

where the behaviour is coming from. They can then understand and know what not acceptable, and the teacher works with the child to help them find another way to get what they want – someone is there to talk to them to help them find a better plan.” Off the back of the success of this methodology, Sunshine Beach State School also began to offer a parenting program, so that Choice Theory could be introduced in the home environment and continued into the teenage years.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY With 139 schools across the region and 71,000 students in their care, Brisbane Catholic Education is another organisation taking a holistic approach to every student’s development, incorporating principles of positive psychology in their approach to supporting student wellbeing and learning. “Our starting point is a principle of positive psychology; a strength-based approach to learning,” explained Kathy Shelton, Principal Education Officer – Learning & Teaching, at Brisbane Catholic Education. “Rather than trying to fix something, we look at starting at the point of what students can do and building from that.”

Drawing from the research of leading researchers such as Carol Dweck and Michael Fullan, Brisbane Catholic Education’s foundation is based on key principles that include: developing a growth mindset, high teacher expectations for every student, explicit teaching of selfregulation and motivation, and using feedback and goal setting to improve learning. And these principles underpin both their pedagogy and teaching framework. Their strategy is based on a whole school approach, providing teachers with an excellent learning and teaching strategy that brings the psychology to the classroom. “Teachers need to understand the elements, as they are working closely and directly with the students, so we have done a lot of work in positioning teachers and the work of student wellbeing to happen within the curriculum rather than as a separate program – making it an integrated part of what teachers are doing in the classroom,” said Kathy. Underpinning that strategy is student engagement in learning and positive relationships with their peers and their teachers. “We look at their engagement in learning, their progress in learning and their wellbeing.” The combination of these psychology principles, a strong pastoral care program and the Catholic philosophy, ensures that the core values of the organisation flow throughout the network of schools. “We believe that every person should be fully supported to reach their full potential,” explained Kathy. “We have programs for social justice and you’ll find lots of examples of students helping others in the community; students are fully supported in their own spiritual and personal development.” Over time, Brisbane Catholic Education has put more resources into providing professional learning for teachers and providing schools with school-based guidance counsellors. “Every school in our system has a schoolbased guidance counsellor, many whom are psychologists, 26

providing proactive and leading approaches, as well as providing more targeted and individual support for students and families when needed.” Since implementing the changes, the schools have seen a definite change in the culture and environment. “These approaches have had a really positive effect,” said Kathy. “We are seeing a very positive impact in student learning growth, but the impact is because we have an integrated approach – we focus on improving literacy and numeracy, however it’s not separate from students’ engagement and wellbeing. We want students to be engaged in their learning and have positive relationships where they feel connected – there is positive impact because the two things go together.” With the systems in place, Brisbane Catholic Education has been able to collect a huge amount of data to perform detailed analysis of student progress and student behaviour, which allows them to see patterns and trends, making it possible to target resources towards areas of need. “We do collect a lot of data and we have a very detailed analysis of students’ progress in learning combined with student behaviour support policy and processes – reflecting students’ engagement in their learning,” said Kathy. “For example, we can look at data and notice that incidents are occurring more during transition between classrooms we can look at our structure and how students are moving around school – a preventative proactive approach to behaviour.” Because of this large network of schools working together, the organisation is also able to share a common language across the entire group. “We are a system of schools and we are able to get that common language and shared approach across the schools – providing a consistent approach to student behaviour, pastoral care, and excellence in teaching.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

PREGNANCY AND OBESITY:

THE BIG PICTURE

Do you feel like you’re fighting a losing battle against your weight? Blame it on the genes. According to Dr Harald Puhalla, one of the Gold Coast’s leading weight-loss surgeons, obesity and genetics are directly related. Combined with environmental influences, your genes are up to 70 per cent responsible for your body’s weight. According to Dr Puhalla, bariatric – or weight-loss surgery – may be the only effective way to alter these genetically predetermined body processes.

With two out of three Australians now overweight, and 25 per cent of the population classified as obese, Dr Puhalla dispels the myth that those with weight issues have brought it on themselves. “Obesity is only partly caused by lifestyle factors,” Dr Puhalla said. “The World Health Organisation regards obesity as a chronic disease and one of the biggest health threats worldwide. “For many patients, their weight problems are not only their fault. The view that obesity is genetic is controversial, however the evidence is very strong that there is a genetic predisposition to obesity.” For those who have tried – and failed – to gain control of their weight, surgery is often the only answer. And the good news, according to Dr Puhalla, is that an obese woman who undergoes weight-loss surgery can help prevent the preposition to obesity being passed on to her children. “Some moderate weight gain can be caused by multiple factors,” Dr Puhalla said. “It often starts as an imbalance of high calorie food intake and lack of adequate exercise. A genetic predisposition for obesity can accelerate the weight gain process. Fat is a very ‘active’ tissue regarding the release of a broad variety of biochemical messengers. These messengers are responsible for causing a lot of disturbances to the body. For example, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome.” These could also lead to slight alteration in the chemical structure of the DNA (genetic information) without changing the DNA itself. Research has shown that an obese mother has a higher chance of having obese offspring when adult. 28

“However, if the same woman has weight-loss surgery and falls pregnant again, the genetic profile which was altered by the messengers from the fat tissue has changed and her kids have a higher chance of being normal weight when adult,” Dr Puhalla said. Weight-loss surgery disrupts the association between obesity and genetics in the mother by impacting on the hormones that affect hunger. The surgery itself leads to much smaller portions and subsequent weight loss results in increased physical activity, increasing the body’s fat-burning metabolism. Dr Puhalla stressed the dangers of obesity during pregnancy. “Obesity during pregnancy presents high risk factors for the whole pregnancy,” he said. “There are also genetic changes which can occur when a woman becomes obese and passes it on to her child.” In June 2017, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of the world’s largest and most comprehensive study of its kind. Led by researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, the study of more than 1.3 million pregnant women found three out of every four were failing to keep pregnancy weight gain within a healthy range. The 38 per cent of pregnant women who are overweight and obese are at higher risk of needing a caesarean birth for larger babies, who are also more likely to remain larger for life. Before they are even born, some children are drawn into a cycle of unhealthy weight that has yet to come full circle. The so-called obesity epidemic is undermining gains in life expectancy, as more people live out their years with chronic illness and disability. Bariatric surgery can offer hope for many people. “Weight-loss surgery is a safe and effective solution that can improve life expectancy and quality of life,” Dr Puhalla said. “It has been shown to cure or at least improve many obesityrelated conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and more.

Melted Snowmen

CHRISTMAS IS A GREAT TIME TO GET IN THE KITCHEN WITH THE KIDS AND MAKE SOMETHING NEW. THESE SUPER-CUTE MELTED SNOWMEN ARE SIMPLE TO MAKE, AND KIDS WILL LOVE THEM!

Number of serves: 8 Prep time: 30 minutes Setting time: 2 hours

INGREDIENTS: • 2 x 85g packets Aeroplane Original Berry Blue Jelly • 1 egg white* • 1½ cups icing sugar • 8 marshmallows • Assorted cake decorations (for making snowmen faces)

METHOD: Make the Aeroplane Original Berry Blue Jelly to the pack instructions, and pour it into eight shallow bowls. Place the bowls of jelly in the refrigerator to set. Mix the egg white* with the icing sugar to form pliable icing. Create 8 palm-sized, thin flat shapes from the icing, then cover each marshmallow with a piece of icing. Tweenage Magic WHEN JANE HARBISON, MOTHER, BUSINESSWOMEN AND FOUNDER OF DREAMING BIG FOR LITTLE GIRLS, RAN A POLL ASKING PARENTS WHAT THEY WANTED MOST FOR THEIR CHILDREN, ‘HAPPINESS’, WAS THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE. FROM THIS DISCOVERY, JANE SET OUT TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT WOULD HELP YOUNG GIRLS TO DISCOVER WHAT REALLY MAKES THEM HAPPY. WE SPOKE TO JANE TO FIND OUT MORE. What inspired you to start the ‘Make my Bedroom Mine’ workshops? It came from a combination of things. I am Deputy Chair on a girl’s school board and I sit on stage each year watching the girls graduate hoping they are going into the world with an idea of what they love doing and confidently do something with it. The other comes from having an about face in my own career, going from an accountant to a creative, and loving the move. So, the Dreaming Big for Little Girls workshop, ‘Make my bedroom Mine’ is a small introduction into identifying what makes you happy using creativity.

are starting to develop their own style, so the workshop is a unique, fun way for the girls to express themselves and explore what makes them happy and feel safe. You partnered with award-winning designer, Virginia Bishop for the project. What depth does that bring to the workshops?

Can you briefly describe the workshops?

Virginia balances guidance and freedom perfectly in the workshop. While sharing the technicalities of what makes a room ‘feel’ right she allows the girls to create something that is just right for them. Two girls can have the same feeling word and the same favourite colour but create two completely different mood boards.

It is an interior design workshop for girls 10-15 years old, where the girls create a mood board for their bedroom using our 10 principles of good design. This is an age when they

Why do you feel it is important for kids to understand what makes them happy before they reach teenage years? When you are happy you are capable of contributing effectively to the world around you. Teenage years can be a difficult time as you navigate who you are and where you fit. Having visual cues to your happiness can, in a small way, equip you to dealing with some of those difficult times when they arrive. How does interior design help with that journey of self-discovery? Interior designers and architects say that space has a very real impact on how we feel, and neuroscientists and psychologists are not far behind with research that supports it. They discuss the way aesthetics affect our decisions, emotional responses and the way we feel about ourselves. We believe that whether we are consciously aware or not, our environment has a profound effect on our state of mind. We like to work with the girls to shape that affect and to make the space authentically theirs. This is why we start the process well before they arrive, by asking them how they want to feel in their room. The workshops are targeted at tween girls. Do you feel this is a particularly important age for this experience? We have found that as they reach 10 years old they desire to insert their own stamp on their space. Interestingly, recent social research indicates that tweenies respond to things more so than engaging with people, so having a bedroom full of things that they love is positive. Older than 15 their interests lie more importantly in human interactions, although I think the aesthetics of space plays an important role in our wellbeing regardless of age.

How will this help them as they grow up? I believe it is important to love what you do. If you do what you love, you will stick with it. If you stick with it you will get good at it. If you get good at it, people will reward you for it. I recently asked a career officer at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) if loving what you do was enough for a successful career. She said yes, as long as it leverages your character strengths (the things you are naturally good at). It is one of the reasons I encourage everyone that is interested in our workshops to find out what theirs are.
