NEW DENTAL SERVICE GOES BEYOND YOUR TEETH Going to the dentist isn’t just about brushing your teeth and cavity protection! Family owned Gold Coast Dental and Denture Centre is excited to launch the only dedicated area and special program for children with nonnutritive habits. The centre will be the only certified practice on the Gold Coast to offer the ‘Thumb Sucking Program’. Owners James and Imola Foster pride themselves on creating a child friendly environment and along with Dr Philippa McCarron their aim is to help children grow healthy teeth and jaws into adulthood. “Our team and practice has grown from a denture clinic to a family practice with a passion for early intervention, developmental assessment and detecting

growth in children’s oral health,” said Imola Foster. “We are parents of young children ourselves and the passion has come from lack of services for early years’ intervention.” Additional services offered include: • Tongue Tie assessment and release with laser. • Oral Myology – developing good oral habits around correct breathing, swallowing and oral habits. • Pre-orthodontic treatment with the Myobrace system. Imola and Dr McCarrons’ goal as mothers and providers is to help young children and families achieve the best growth of their child’s jaws.

WELCOME

W

hen it comes to Christmas, I’ve usually found there are two types of people: those that start the countdown in July and own an impressive array of Christmas paraphernalia, and those who are a wee bit grinchy. Admittedly, in my younger years I think I’ve generally fallen into the latter. The stress of buying presents to a set deadline and the expectation of it being a ‘perfect’ Christmas (whatever that may be), always left me feeling a little deflated. That was until recently. And I had kids. And the complete chaos they brought with them forced Christmas to be nothing traditional, and yet everything magical. By doing away with what was expected and having a day that works for everyone, around baby sleeps and toddler tantrum triggers (always use the blue spoon), Christmas began to make a bit more sense. Whether that’s a beach cricket battle followed by a sandy cheesymite scroll, or a dinner of chips and dips alongside the hilarity of charades with a 5-year-old, each year now is random, unique, and haphazardly special. So, to all the already exhausted mamas out there feeling the looming pressure of

Christmas – give yourself a break. The kids won’t remember whether the dinner was nicely presented, or the wrapping paper had matching tags. But they will remember that mum was sat beside them, relaxed and enjoying the day. To help in this quest for an easier Christmas, this issue we have a huge gift guide with everything that’s hot for under the tree this year. And if you like to sing a carol or two, we have a round-up of the Christmas festivities across the region. We also chat to the two local brothers who are on a quest to make Christmas a little brighter for Queensland kids in foster care. And of course, Christmas also means summer holidays! So, our cover feature takes a look at some of the best resorts around the world with kids clubs, where you really can switch off and take some much-needed ‘you’ time this summer, knowing that the kids are having the time of their lives. Plus, with the region’s events, news, education stories, movie reviews and more, it’s the perfect issue to get you set for summer. Have an amazing Christmas… whatever that may be!

Bush Kindy Explorers is an exciting naturebased pre-school program now offered at GC Child Care Centres. It introduces children to nature and the unique Australian environment. The program recognises the significance of land in Aboriginal culture and encourages children to reconnect with and appreciate nature while learning how to work together and take turns in small groups. This fun program allows the kids to get out into different areas of the community, including the bush and the beach. Bush Kindy Explorers is led by the children, with support from passionate educators, allowing children to take reasonable risks in a supervised environment. The children learn new skills before starting school such as road safety and stranger danger. They learn about the wildlife and plants and in the area and get to know what’s going on in the environment around them. The program was designed in and around the area’s diverse landscapes and is included in the child care centres’ competitive fees. A popular program, 60 children regularly attend Bush Kindy Explorers at the three centres on the Gold Coast. For more information call 5530 5563 or go to GCChildCareCentres.com.au

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR THE FUTURE

id you know that experts believe that careers education begins too late in secondary schools, is quite varied in quality and quantity and does not provide meaningful work experience? Students are falling into the trap of ‘choosing a career’ when they are in Years 11 or 12, when they should be developing a range of skills in earlier years to help them navigate the future of work. We’ve all heard that kids of today will have up to 17 different career roles during their lifetime and it is this paradox that has Jennifer Caro of Brisbane Catholic Education giving priority to Vocational Learning. “It’s really critical that we shift the mindset away from a linear pathway or single career outcome for today’s students. “If they are to be successful in the future, educators must help them to develop a portfolio of skills that can deepen over time and become highly portable across many roles and industries,” explains Jennifer. Brisbane Catholic Education recently launched a Vocational Learning Position and as Jennifer says, this is looking at traditional career education in a completely new and much broader way. “Vocational education is just scratching the surface, whereas Vocational Learning

Brisbane Catholic Education is a learning community of 72,000 students, that shapes lives, nurtures individuals and encourages each child to realise their full potential. Through its partnerships with parents, governments and the community, it is providing social responsibility, self-discipline and Christian values for all its students and nurtures and supports the community in their faith journey. The Archdiocese of Brisbane covers a geographical area that includes much of south-east Queensland spanning metropolitan Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine coasts, west through Ipswich and the Lockyer and Brisbane valleys and through the South Burnett district and north to Childers.

THE RISE OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING A

Meeting the demands of a 21st century world, project-based learning is turning the typical classroom on its head, and with incredible results.

sk most parents about their experience of school and the stories are often quite similar. Their teacher would talk and write on the board; students would listen and take down notes. You’d do exercises from a textbook, take tests, get grades… rinse and repeat. This ‘typical’ classroom is often pictured as one where desks are in rows, a teacher desk is at the front, students all have a textbook and notepad and the teacher begins the class by talking from the front. As the teacher talks, knowledge is assumed to have transferred from the teacher’s head to the students. Upon reflecting on life at school, you’d often hear: ‘How is this relevant to my daily life?’ When will I use this after school?’ ‘Why should I learn this?’ Consequently, many people’s opinion of school is negative, either because of a negative experience with a teacher or simply because of irrelevance. Schooling has continued like this for quite some time, but in recent years, dramatic societal shifts have K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

changed whole sectors of the community yet schooling is no different. We have the Internet as a global information and communications medium. Add to this the ubiquity of computing devices and teachers are no longer the source of all knowledge in the classroom. Instead, they are now a facilitator of it and a guide in discerning which knowledge is useful and how it can be applied effectively. Social media has also created collaboration by osmosis and this needs to be met head-on in the classroom or we become irrelevant – not because we are behind the times, but because we are not recognising both our changing world and our changing audience.

What is project-based learning? According to Michael McDowell in his book Rigorous PBL by Design, Project-based learning (PBL) can be defined as ‘a series of complex tasks that include planning and

design, problem solving, decision-making, creating artefacts and communicating results’ (McDowell, 2017:2). PBL is characterised by the following: • Learning is student-centred. • Learning occurs in small groups. • A tutor is present as facilitator and guide. • Authentic problems are presented at the beginning of the learning sequence. • The problems encountered are used as tools to achieve the required knowledge and the problem-solving skills necessary to eventually solve the problem. • New information is acquired through self-directed learning. (McDowell, 2017:2) One of the assumptions that we have found hard to break is that PBL is a free-forall and the teacher lets the students work it all out. The PBL we have invested in requires detailed teacher planning and strategic implementation to allow students the best learning experiences. What are the benefits?

integrated formative assessment allow teachers to ascertain where student gaps in learning are and address them throughout the project. In this way, PBL becomes a rich learning experience for children incorporating some of best learning strategies around.

Why is this approach important for the future?

It’s more visual and more hands on.

If we were to go back one hundred years, inventions like electricity and motorised carriages were superseding the age of steam and creating an unknown future. The cycle is repeating itself again with inventions like the Internet, artificial intelligence and robotics. These aren’t science fiction anymore, they are the current reality and will change our world in as significant a way as the motor car did. The use of PBL as a methodology for teaching meets these challenges head-on as it focuses on the development of the skills required in an uncertain future. How will we solve the challenges of robots and artificial intelligence performing low- to mid-level jobs? (Thompson, 2018) Will we need to be able to collaborate? Will the computer be capable of creative thought or solutions that require unrelated ideas to connect?

One of the key highlights of PBL is reflection opportunities for students. Teachers can read student perspectives on their work and discover a growing depth of understanding both throughout the project and afterwards. Benchmarks or checkpoints built into the project allow students to be formatively assessed and problems identified early in the process so that there is achievement developing throughout the course and no surprises where there is no work at the end. The concept of rubrics for assessment of skills like collaboration and even growth mindset is another great benefit. Generally, rubrics are used for assessing students on a criteria, in this case, a student can be assessed on the right kinds of behaviours along a sliding scale. Students are then able to clearly understand what a healthy group environment looks like and can even selfassess these skills as they are easy to read and understand. In this way, collaboration is more structured and goal oriented. In the past it’s not been taught as a skill, PBL changes that and helps us build better collaborators. Other benefits include: • More teacher discussion of student learning. Rather than the focus being on ‘what they will teach’, it is shifted to ‘how will the students learn’. • Better scaffolding of tasks so that assumptions like ‘students should know how to work in groups’ becomes ‘what strategies will I implement to help students learn how to work in a group effectively’. • What students already know is identified so that gaps can be targeted and students can identify what they need to know. • Students are more active in their learning. • More connections with the local community: doctors, town planners, fire department representatives, authors and many more have observed student projects and given real-world feedback. What difference has it made to students? King’s Christian College introduced PBL in 2016, following a visit from a Sydney school that had adopted PBL in their classrooms. The visiting school was not only achieving outstanding HSC results, but also students in their middle years could describe what they were learning as well as articulate clearly why it was important and how it connected with other ideas. In the teaching world, this is nothing short of a miracle. King’s wanted their students to have this type of work ethic and ability to articulate their learning in a meaningful way. Today, PBL at King’s Christian College can be found throughout the school with a core focus being on the middle years of schooling from Years 5–8. Throughout these year levels you will find classes that are hives of activity. Groups might be discussing how they will solve a challenging driving question like: ‘What would happen if oil ran out tomorrow?’ Others might be participating in a group session where they discuss the team norms that they will agree to abide by. Still others may be checking the project-pacing chart to see where they are up to with completing the project and determining what their next steps might be. Since implementing PBL, King’s Christian College has found the turn-around incredible, and the responses to problems that some of the students are coming up with are simply amazing. Cross-curricular relationships have enriched learning experiences for students. For example, the Science and Industrial Design and Technology department partnered together to help students with a simple machines assignment. Students had handson experience to learn about and create gear systems for their science project. Kids now come to school with a curiosity and passion for learning that is so exciting to be a part of. As well, previously disengaged students are now much more motivated, and taking ownership for their learning.

You feel less pushed around, you get to try things for yourself.

By Mal Galer, Director of Curriculum Innovation, King’s Christian College. King’s Christian College is a growing P–12 school located on two campuses: Reedy Creek with approximately 2000 students and Pimpama with around 500 students. Pimpama will begin high school with its first Year 7 cohort in 2019. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

The Little

Elves Project

Wanting to make Christmas a little brighter for Queensland kids in foster care, brothers Jack and Hayden embarked on a project that is now making waves across the region.

I

n 2017, brothers Jack (9) and Hayden (6), had a vision to help make Christmas a little brighter for Queensland kids in foster care. They wanted to give Christmas presents to children less fortunate and were determined to find a way to get as many people as possible to help. And so, ‘The Little Elves Project’ was born. The first event in 2017 saw the community come together and donate an incredible 2,500 gifts! This year, Jack and Hayden are on a mission to double that number so as many children as possible will have a brighter Christmas. Completely volunteer based, Jack, Hayden and mum Kate support the worthwhile charity, GIVIT (givit.org.au), and will be collecting on their behalf. GIVIT have over 8,000 children across Queensland in care. We chat to Kate Armstrong, the amazing mama behind the project, to find out more.

Yes, the last few years have been tough on the family – with both the boys having ADHD and Aspergers, so every day is an adventure! Being a single parent family, they don’t have a lot of material possessions to give. However, I have always encouraged the boys to help others in need. I really believe that we can each do our part. The boys and I have had a tough couple of years but we know there is always someone more in need that us, so we like to give back and help wherever we can. KEEPING KIDS TEETH

HEALTHY

DURING HOLIDAY SEASON Christmas is party season, and that often means sugary treats. Imola Foster from the Gold Coast Dental and Denture Centre shares her tips on keeping kids’ teeth strong, healthy and cavity free during the festive season.

C

hristmas is fast approaching which means social gatherings, parties and end of year festivities. Though they are a lot of fun, more often than not, sugary foods such as cookies, cakes and soft drinks will be on the menu. Though you can limit how much your child indulges their sweet tooth at home, they will have plenty of access to sugary foods and drinks outside the home during this time, which is much harder to control. Despite the abundance of sugary foods and drinks available, it is important to be vigilant to keep our kids’ teeth clean and healthy and prevent tooth decay. We also need to watch how much our children consume as well as how often they have these ‘treats’. Grazing and constantly eating is not great as the saliva doesn’t get a chance to wash over the teeth. Saliva is the body’s natural defense against dental cavities and reduces the effect of the acid produced by the plaque bacteria. Most importantly, the holiday season should not be any different from any other time for keeping our children’s oral health on track.

30

N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2018

Look for products in supermarkets that are added sugar free, preservative and artificial colour free.

Where possible, children under the age of two should not consume any foods with added sugars, than can hide in yoghurt, food purees, ice blocks and biscuits.

When possible, feed your children healthy foods before attending a party so they won’t fill up on sugary foods.

Plain water and plain milk should be the preferred choice of drink.

Make your own healthier options for snacks and frozen treats. There are lots of fast and easy recipes online.

Young children should only have maximum of four teaspoons of sugar per day and this should come from whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Offer children harder foods such as carrot sticks and celery sticks so good chewing is developed. Team these up with some homemade dips such as guacamole or hummus and it’s a delicious treat!

Children up to the age of eight should be guided and helped with brushing and flossing their teeth morning and night, as they are still not proficient enough alone.

THE GRINCH

In cinemas 29 November (CTC) Based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, The Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

See an advance screening of ‘The Grinch’ on Sunday 18 November. Tickets go on sale 25 October at eventcinemas.com.au

DISNEY’S “THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS”

DISNEY’S “RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET”

In cinemas 26 December (CTC)

In cinemas 15 November (CTC)

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key – which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. Can Clara retreive the key and restore harmony to an unstable world?

Video-game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and best friend Vanellope (voice of Sarah Silverman) leave the comforts of Litwak’s arcade in an attempt to save her game. Their quest takes them to the vast world of the internet, a world Vanellope wholeheartedly embraces – so much so that Ralph worries he may lose the only friend he’s ever had.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. Following from the first film, Grindelwald has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

In cinemas 22 November (CTC)
