Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss was one of my favourite books as a child, and is still one of my favourites to read to my own kids. Not just because of the curiosity it sparks and the confidence it builds in your ability to navigate through life’s adventures… You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, You can steer yourself any direction you choose. But also, the reminder that this adventure isn’t always going to be easy…

that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you. The resilience that kids need in today’s world is critical, and this quest for life experience has become a leading driver for many family adventures. A visit to the local museum is not about observing artefacts in boxes, but about getting your hands dirty and understanding things at a grass-roots level; a trip to France is no longer just about seeing the Eiffel Tower, but about trying the food, learning the language and understanding the culture. Therefore, this issue we’ve set out explore the many ways in which we can bring a little adventure and culture to our kids' lives, in our World Issue! In our Family feature, we chat to a local travel expert about the value of taking an extended trip when the kids are little, and how you go about planning an adventure of your own, while our Education feature looks at the imperative for raising global citizens and what one school in Brisbane is doing to ensure their students get the world education they need. We also meet one local teacher who is going beyond the classroom to put multicultural development at the top of the agenda. And for those seeking to escape the daily grind we check out the idyllic family-friendly paradise of Fiji (bliss!). Staying closer to home, if you want to sample a little culinary diversity but don’t fancy the long-haul flight we’ve rounded up the best kid-friendly international restaurants across the region. And for those of you looking for a local family adventure with a difference we’ve also taken a tour around the best farmstays on our doorstep. Plus, with all the usual news, local events, school notices, and travel products, it’s time to dust off that passport and get set to explore! As always, if you have any stories or news to share with our growing community, just drop me a line at editor@mothergoosemedia.com.au. I’d love to hear from you!

when your child is too sick to go to school or childcare, a carer with a blue card and first aid certificate will come and sit with your child whilst you go to work or attend to errands. They will even get dinner started or arrange doctor appointments for you! The service also extends to parents who are sick and need help looking after the kids. Starting in Maroochydore, the concept has seen such demand it is now available to families in Brisbane.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF WATERSLIDES IS COMING TO BRISBANE Get set to splash about to your heart’s content when the world’s largest water sliding festival hits Brisbane this summer. Slideapalooza, held at Mount Cotton from January 13 to 21, 2018, will see Sirromet Winery transformed into a sea of super-fun waterslides with over 1km of single slide inflatables, a football field-long six-lane slip ’n slide, two sky-high inflatable slides, plus a number of kid-sized inflatables to round out the family-friendly event. Sirromet Wines’ General Manager, Rod Hill, reached out to Slideapalooza event organisers after seeing footage of this year’s Hunter Valley event on TV. “We have a great property and Slideapalooza will be a fantastic complement to existing events such as A Day on the Green, Burning of the Vines and Miss Muddy”, says Rod. “This is sure to be a fantastic event for the Redlands region.” Tickets can be reserved at slideapalooza.com.

STRONG NAPLAN SCORES FOR QUEENSLAND STUDENTS Preliminary results for NAPLAN 2017 have shown that Queensland students are on a par with other states for reading and spelling. Premier Annasatacia Palaszczuk was happy with the results, saying this year was one of the best for the state. "I'm pleased to say that our students have recorded some of their highest scores since NAPLAN testing began in 2008," she said. "Overall, Queensland's strongest results occurred in Years 3, 5 and 7 and numeracy was a stand-out area of improvement across all year levels." Ms Palaszczuk said Queensland’s 2017 NAPLAN results confirmed the long-term trend of lifting literacy and numeracy outcomes across the state. Education Minister, Kate Jones said Queensland was lifting achievement across the board. “What the results show is not only are we seeing more children meet the national minimum standards, but we’re also seeing our students moving from the lower performance bands into the upper performance bands,” she said. “Year 3 and Year 5 students have shown particularly strong performance in reading and Years 5 and 7 students have achieved strong results in spelling. Approximately 240,000 Queensland students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 took the national test this year. The final results for 2017 will be released in December. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

NEW AUSTRALIA CENTRE FOR AUTISM AND NEURODEVELOPMENT
Simeon met with Luke Howarth and Tracy Davis MP to receive an Australian Flag to take to the camp.
EMMANUEL BIG BAND PERFORMS ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
Growing demand for streamlined autism and related services has spurred an experienced team of psychology and neuroscience experts to introduce the first Australian Centre for Autism and Neurodevelopment (AusCan) based in Tweed Heads. AusCan is led by qualified professionals and is NDIS approved to provide a range of complementary services that address a child’s brain development from the early stages of an autism or neurodevelopmental diagnosis. The centre’s approach of bringing neurodevelopment and behavioural therapies together is an Australian first. AusCan Clinical Director, Ms Nerida Saunders, said the centre offers a welcoming and supportive environment for families facing the challenges of a diagnosis. “When a child receives a diagnosis the emotions are unfathomable. This is followed by information overload in an attempt to discern the best course of action amidst the Internet noise and professional advice,” she said. “Our approach aims to relieve the stress. We assess each individual on their specific needs and introduce families to a range of therapy options with guidance and direction from qualified professionals.
ST PAUL’S COLLEGE STUDENT TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA Year 10 student, Simeon Gover from St Paul’s College, has been selected to represent Australia at the Pacific Rim International Camp in Japan this month. Pacific Rim International Student Camp is a non-profit organisation that promotes the spirits of ‘Friendship, Leadership & Followership’, and aims to deepen the cultural appreciation and international understanding among the youths from the Pacific rim region through living together during the educational camp program. Whilst in Japan, Simeon will spend five days with a home-stay family in Tokyo, eight days on an adventure camp and three days sightseeing.
The Emmanuel College Big Band were invited to represent the City of the Gold Coast at the 2017 Chengdu International Sister Cities Youth Music Festival in China. The festival played host to nearly 450 young musicians from 31 countries and regions all over the world as well as 30 art teams from China. The Band performed in front of audiences numbering in their thousands and their magnificent music had the crowds singing, clapping and foot-tapping along, with rousing rounds of applause. Emmanuel College is extremely grateful to the Gold Coast Mayor, The Honourable Tom Tate, and his office staff, Study Gold Coast and Tyler International for their financial support and for providing this magnificent opportunity for the Emmanuel College Big Band to represent the Gold Coast in Chengdu, China. Whilst in Chengdu, the Band enjoyed and highly valued the support of representatives of the Australian Consulate General and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“Our environment is inclusive and supportive. It is filled with like-minded families and inspirational stories that help create a positive pathway for parents and caregivers. We are driven by the belief that a diagnosis is not a life sentence, and we’ve seen first-hand at how effective our therapies can be.” 12

AN INCREASING NUMBER OF FAMILIES ARE CHOOSING TO HIT PAUSE ON LIFE AND TAKE AN EXTENDED TRIP WHEN THE KIDS ARE YOUNG. AND WITH A LITTLE PLANNING IT COULD BE THE GREATEST ADVENTURE YOUR FAMILY EVER SHARES. It could be six weeks touring around Australia, driving a motorhome across Europe, or spending a several months undertaking charity work in Asia. Whatever your destination, many families are choosing to pack up and hit the road when the kids are little, giving them some of the most significant life experiences they could ever hope for. Georgina Grandi, Personal Travel Manager from Travel Managers, believes that travelling when kids are younger is the perfect time. “They are excited about the adventure, and you can start building a family’s love of travel from a young age,” she explained. “Also, they haven’t yet started school so it won’t interrupt their school education.” Though people like to think they have a work/life balance, the reality is often very different, and removing everyone from the day-to-day routine can offer genuine quality time and a chance to connect as a family unit. Most importantly, Georgina believes that an adult’s love for travel shouldn’t have to end when you have kids. “Take them along for the adventure. The kids will love you for it.”
Travel with kids today
The experience of travelling with children has changed dramatically in recent years. Gone are the days of one movie screen at the front of the plane and boring museum displays. Today, kids are catered for at every turn with in-flight entertainment, hands-on exhibitions, menus with colouring activities, and family-friendly hotels. Today’s mini explorers also have the world at their fingertips, with Google Earth, and encyclopedia and translation apps to enrich every experience. And of course, they can also now stay in touch with friends and family back home as they go.
The world is a classroom
Some of the best life lessons are found outside a textbook. “Travelling teaches kids life skills such as respect, resilience and patience,” Georgina said. “It also captures children’s imagination and their senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. The excitement of fireworks, the smell of the noodle markets, the thrill of entering an underground cave.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au
There are also practical experiences such as using different currencies, passports and learning a different language, and it can be the start of their immersion into history and geography. “It always amazes me when meeting kids from a different country who speak a different language and grow up in different environments,” Georgina added. “They play the same games, laugh at the same jokes, and genuinely love people visiting their country. It’s wonderful to see your children playing with children of other countries in their beautiful and natural way.” Becoming immersed in a new culture, children are also inspired to try new food and see the world from a different perspective. “I have a very fussy eater and I always find that when we travel, he will try new foods that I can put on his ‘can now eat’ list when we get home,” Georgina said. “It’s a small win buts it’s a win!”
TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELLING
WITH YOUNG KIDS • Be prepared for delays and last-minute changes. • Never assume your kids can wait for the next toilet stop!
• Know where the parks located so the kids can run around. • Check airports for kids’ play areas and facilities. • Book an apartment so you have kitchen facilities. It will save you money in the long run and you get to visit the supermarket or deli to try local specialties. • Check everyone’s passports that they won’t expire for at least six months after the trip. • Make sure vaccinations are all up to date. • Check the Department of Foreign Affair website (www.dfat.gov.au) for each country to intend to visit for up-to-date information.

[FAMILY]
DON’T FORGET… â Always carry a medical kit. â Pack a small backpack that kids can carry themselves with their own essentials. â Always have a sling or carrier for babies. â Use scooters for older kids to get around on, and consider a hiking back pack for little ones. â Be ruthless with non-essentials. Kids really don’t need much beyond a special cuddly toy, and an iPad with books, games and movies. â Give kids a diary or old camera to record their own memories. It will be interesting to look back on the trip from their perspective. â Rather than take your heavy pram, take a cheaper umbrella stroller that is light and convenient. Most airports will allow you to take it all the way to the gate. â Take a spare pair of clothes in your hand luggage for everyone + snacks + hand wipes. â Take a list of all current medications – contact lenses, glasses etc. â If you are planning on renting a property, take with you evidence of credit rating and letters of reference.
Getting started
Though there are many amazing corners of the world to visit, travel with little ones does come with some restrictions, so choose a trip to suit your whole family. Trekking the Himalayas with a toddler might be out, but the USA and Southeast Asia are very kid-friendly. If you are travelling with older kids, get them involved in choosing a destination – they might have a burning desire to see penguins in the wild, or go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. If you aren’t sure what will suit your family, Georgina recommends starting off doing a long drive in Australia. “It will show you how well the kids travel and what they enjoy (and don’t enjoy). As an example, we did a great road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, we took a month all up but spent a week travelling in each direction.” Try making the drive part of the holiday, taking different routes in each direction and making the stops fun. “We travelled via the coast in one direction and
then went inland on the return. Australia is a magnificent country, get out there and explore it. It’s on your doorstep!” If you want to venture a little further, try driving a motorhome around a couple of the US states. “Instead of heading straight to Disneyland, make your way to a National Park. They are full of fascinating sights, great walks and the stops are always interesting. You can then use Disneyland as a bribe for the kids!” If you want to head even further afield, Georgina suggests a rail journey through Europe. “Depending on which destinations you visit, you will probably get the kids’ rail for free. It varies for each country but in general, kids under 4–6 years are free.” If you are planning on driving, Georgina recommends not driving more than 400kms a day. “The kids get restless after this time and it means you won’t get tired from too much driving, especially in unfamiliar territory.”
What to do when you get there
Rather than keep moving around all the time, have a base and use it to take day trips. This means you aren’t packing and unpacking all the time. It also helps the kids to settle rather than be overwhelmed by constant change. Once settled, Georgina recommends look for activities that will be fun for everyone. “It is no fun if you are at kids’ parks all day, so mix it up. Go to a park in the morning and then when the kids are tired, put them in the stroller and make your way to something else such as a museum. However, always check ahead with museums, as many now have kid zones with fabulous activities.” Though you might want to fit in all the sights, slow your pace down and try not to be on the go all the time. “Take time to hang at the beach or with the locals,” added Georgina. “The kids don’t need rollercoasters, they just want to play in the sand and eat ice cream. These are the times when funny situations happen that are unplanned but remain with you forever.” Last but definitely not least, research, research, research! “The better prepared you are for the trip, the easier it is going to be,” said Georgina. “If you are time poor, use a Travel Manager to help you in the planning.”

[WORLD]
EDUCATING for the
WORLD of TOMORROW by PAUL BROWNING, HEADMASTER, ST PAUL’S SCHOOL IN NORTH BRISBANE
WHAT WILL THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE? It’s a big question – one that has puzzled many of the world’s smartest thinkers. It’s also an important question, particularly when it comes to education. If education is meant to prepare young people for their future lives, it makes sense to contemplate what that future looks like. It’s this question that drove an expansive research project at St Paul’s School in North Brisbane. In it, 30 leading minds were interviewed from across the globe and from a variety of fields (economists, philosophers, politicians, demographers, theologians and more) in an attempt to paint a picture of what the world will look like in the year 2028. The answers were fascinating. Some of the key takeaways from the research include: • Up to 50 per cent of today’s jobs will be replaced by robotics and artificial intelligence. • The average human will be a 34-year-old Indian man. • Chinese will be the world’s most spoken language, closely followed by Spanish. • Wearable technology will be controlled by thought. • Car insurance won’t exist as most cars will be driverless. • The most fought over natural resource will be water. Findings like these prompted St Paul’s School to re-evaluate what an education worth having really looks like – especially if today’s young people will enter a world where the only certainty is change. It became increasingly apparent that the skills and dispositions students graduate with will be different to those valued by 20

educators in times past. Students will need high levels of creativity if they are to potentially create the jobs of tomorrow. They will need a global perspective if they are to work across different cultures. Given the likely development of technology, the classrooms of tomorrow may be virtual ones with Australian students in Brisbane learning side-by-side (perhaps via holograms) with a student in the United States, Finland, China and Japan – all at the same time. Students will therefore need high levels of empathy if they are going to have the patience and desire to collaborate and cooperate with students from vastly different cultures.
THINKING LIKE AN ENTREPRENEUR Closer to home, it’s increasingly likely that students will need the mindset of an entrepreneur. After all, if 50 per cent of today’s jobs are likely to disappear over the next 20 years (as predicted by Oxford University) students will likely need to create their own employment. It’s this vision that prompted St Paul’s School to partner with internationally-recognised start-up hub, River City Labs, to create Australia’s first Entrepreneurs Club. However, it wasn’t just students that were invited to participate. Given the need for ongoing education amongst Australians of all ages and professions, St Paul’s ran this Club with students learning alongside their teachers, their parents and members of the broader community. All up, 23 people participated in this prototype program, forming teams and designing their own business. By the end, teams pitched their ideas to a panel of investors, some teams have since received investment and are now inmarket generating returns. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

[WORLD]
The course was designed from scratch by in-house expertise, and coaches from the corporate sector (lawyers, accountants, IT professionals, marketing consultants, angel investors and experienced start up veterans) had regular input to both the program’s shape and the individual teams’ efforts. However, the most important characteristic from this Club isn’t the businesses themselves. It’s the mindsets and characteristics students are developing through the process. A key component of the course is ‘pivoting’ – identifying the shortcomings and ‘failings’ of your business idea and then heading in a different direction to explore its potential. This plays into one of the key mindsets corporate Australia has bemoaned the lack of in young graduates – resilience. Increasingly, young people are not finishing school or university with the potential to bounce back from failure. When they encounter a road block, many young people will simply give up rather than persist and try to identify alternative solutions. The Entrepreneurs Club really emphasises the value of learning from failure and using ingenuity and creativity to identify a new approach.
A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE While the capacity for entrepreneurship is important, equally important is the potential for students to think globally. With the world getting increasingly smaller, it is increasingly likely that the students of today will have careers working alongside people from multiple races, ethnicities and cultures. With this comes a sense of social responsibility. In Australia, students may not always feel that they are well off. Their exposure to cultures in less fortunate areas of the world is often quite limited. The question for educators is: how can you grow a global perspective that is underpinned by an attitude of charity? St Paul’s sought to address this issue by conducting an annual outreach trip to a less fortunate geographic neighbour.
Each year, over 20 St Paul’s students from Years 10 to 12, visit the island of Santo in northern Vanuatu and engage with the communities of Sakau, Turtle Bay and Lorevilko. The School has been sending students to these villages for the past seven years and the impact (on both students and those visited) is significant. Students work hard in preparation to teach in the schools they visit. The reception in each of these communities to the students’ visit is always special. Not just from the schools, but from the entire community who often greet the students with songs and dancing. The schools visited show incredibly generous hospitality and it is important to remember that they are giving their time, talents and goodwill out of their poverty – not their wealth. The trip is one of the most effective initiatives in building a global capacity for students. For a brief moment, they are without their phones and creature comforts and are forced to confront and appreciate a culture vastly different to their own. Students always return to Australia with a renewed perspective – one that challenges the concept that ‘more is always better’. An attitude of servant leadership is experienced and cherished.
WHAT’S NEXT? The impetus is now on the next generation to identify what kind of a world they want to live in. When today’s youngest students finish Year 12, the rapid changes across the globe brought on by technology will make much of daily life barely recognisable. What used to be key parts of growing up could soon be obsolete. You might be able to forget about teaching your children to drive – their new cars will be driverless. Will they ever need to walk to the shops given the increasing convenience of delivery services? The task for parents and schools is to partner together and ensure every child receives an education worth having – one where the future is exciting and full of hope.
St Paul’s is a Pre-Prep to Year 12 Anglican school in North Brisbane. The School’s vision is to be the national leader in educational thinking and practice and help equip young people for an uncertain future by providing an education worth having.

[HEALTH PROMOTION]
TIRED OF BEING OVERWEIGHT? FIND A NEW LEASE OF LIFE! Weight gain has a way of sneaking up over the years and sometimes, shedding a few unwanted kilos can prove impossible. Millions of people face the same daily grind – working towards saving for a house or holiday, building a business and raising families. Everyone is striving for worklife balance, yet sometimes healthy habits take a back seat and the weight piles on.
“LOSING WEIGHT IS ABOUT HELPING YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE, YOUR SELF-ESTEEM AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, SAVING YOUR LIFE.” Globally, 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organisation. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, joint disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), type 2 diabetes and some cancers. If you’ve been battling your weight for some time and you’re fed up with yo-yo dieting, then surgery can provide a new lease of life. “There is no easy way to lose 20 kilograms, particularly when other priorities come first and spare time is at a minimum,” explains Dr Harald Puhalla, who offers a range of weight-loss surgical options at his private practice at Gold Coast Private Hospital and Pindara Private Hospital. “Over time, people eventually find themselves in a place where they can no longer live a full life.”
the weight loss is usually short lived. “Your body gets more efficient with every diet,” explains Dr Puhalla. “For people who lose a lot of weight, their metabolic index becomes more efficient and they subsequently gain the weight again.” Bariatric procedures, on the other hand, allow for reduced calorie intake by altering the size of stomach so people feel full more quickly. This is accompanied by changes in hormone levels which communicate with the brain to reduce hunger and decrease appetite. Weight-loss surgery often comes with many overwhelming emotions but Dr Puhalla believes taking the first step for early action is the key to improving life expectancy and overall quality of life. “Reaching out to start a weight-loss journey that will succeed is what’s important,” says Dr Puhalla. “Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals provide a warm, supportive environment and will support you through each step of the process so you can maximise your weight-loss potential. “In a compassionate initial consultation, I look at all angles – what your habits are, what exercise and diet successes and failures you’ve had. With this knowledge, I can then provide you with a holistic and individualised treatment plan to assist you in reaching your desired goals.” Dr Puhalla warned that weight-loss surgery should not be regarded as the ‘easy way out’. “For substantial weight loss, there is no other way out,” Dr Puhalla says. “Weight loss surgery can mean 60 to 80 per cent of excess weight can be lost after two years. And once the weight is gone, patients can quickly have a new lease of life, with relief from the many health problems that excess weight can bring.”
Discussing your challenges is the first step towards making a positive change, according to Dr Puhalla. “Most people struggling with their weight don’t want to talk about it,” he says. “Many people feel isolated and unable to reach out for help. Losing Surgeries offered: weight through diet and exercise can • Sleeve gastrectomy be achievable and sustainable but with excessive weight gain, it gets harder to • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass lose and to sustain the achieved weight • Omega loop gastric bypass loss. This is where surgery can help.” • Revisional surgery Research has shown that restrictive Dr Puhalla offers these bariatric procedures laparoscopically and robotically. diets may help lose weight quickly, but 24

FIJI
t h e u lt i m at e family-friendly escape
A PERFECT BLEND OF PRISTINE BEACHES, ADVENTURE, RELAXATION AND AMAZING LOCAL CUISINE. (OH, AND DID WE MENTION THE FABULOUS NANNIES?) MEET THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY PARADISE OF FIJI. We often want it all with family holidays – somewhere easy to reach yet culturally diverse; with plenty of activities for kids but relaxing for Mum and Dad; where fussy eaters won’t starve but parents get to sample fine dining. And we want it all in a simple bundle where we don’t have to worry about anything – we’ve got enough to do every day! Asking too much? Well, maybe not. Because nestled in the heart of the Pacific is the jewel of the family holiday crown… Fiji. Fiji consists of 332 islands, of which 106 are inhabited. A multi-cultural tapestry of Fijian, Tongan, Indian and European, the people are some of the friendliest you could meet. Just a 3.5-hour flight from Brisbane, this tropical paradise couldn’t be simpler to get to. And with resorts that are specifically designed with little ones in mind, this is familyfriendly travel at its best.
On the mainland
The main island of Viti Levu, home to the airport and main cities of Suva and Nadi, is a great mix of activities and beaches. Vitu Levu is home to a range of resorts and hotels. One of the more popular resorts with families is the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort in Sigatoka, situated on the Coral Coast side of the island. 26
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
Within an easy transfer from Nadi airport, this 16-hectare multi-award winning resort is designed around the architectural style of a traditional Fijian village. Offering everything a family could ever want, the resort makes holidays really easy. And from the moment you arrive, greeted with a hearty ‘Bula’ at the entrance, every experience leaves you loving the islands more and more. Accommodation comes in a range of styles, from your own beachside bure to modern hotel rooms. The bures are perfect for families and a standard bure can comfortably accommodate four people. The resort includes a tropical swimming lagoon for all ages, a fabulous kids’ club, activities centre, boutique shops, fitness centre, spa, flood-lit tennis courts, private beach and golf training facilities. There are also five adult-only zones including the serene Vahavu bistro and lounge, and sparkling adult-only pool with a swim-up bar (mojito, anyone?). But what Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is most famous for is its exceptional nanny service. Whether you want to enjoy a romantic meal, a kid-free swim, or need some serious bliss time at the world-renowned Bebe Spa Sanctuary (the Signature Massage is heavenly), the nannies remove all the challenges of a normal family holiday and leave you with the best of both worlds – holidaying with the kids whilst also having chance to reconnect as a couple. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au
[DESTINATIONS]
As well as the facilities, there are stacks of restaurant and bar options on site. The family-friendly Vale Ni Kana is located at the heart of the resort and serves weekly themed dinners with live entertainment that will keep even the fussiest of kids happy. Or for a fine dining experience try the award-winning Ivi Restaurant, recently awarded Fiji’s ‘Best Visitor Dining Experience’ at the 2017 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards (try the Fijian Kokoda and the flambéed orange crepe – seriously yum!). For a romantic sunset cocktail, head up to the idyllic Kalokalo Bar perched on the hill overlooking the resort, or for a relaxed drink try the beachside Sundowner Bar.
Things to do Just a five-minute hop from Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is the Kula Eco Park. Perfect for younger families, it’s easy to get around and you can get up close and personal with a host of tropical creatures – hold an iguana, pet a snake, feed a turtle, and wander through the bird enclosure where parrots fly freely overhead. The wildlife park has a great splash-and-play zone and waterslide in the centre, perfect for little ones to cool off. There is also a fabulous zip-line (minimum weight for riders is 35kg) which takes riders on an amazing ride through the rainforest canopy, gliding from the top of the park to the valley floor. For an excursion with a difference, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort offers a unique village tour, which includes a visit to a local school that the resort supports. This day trip is particularly poignant for families as it allows children to experience the school environment for kids in Fiji, a country that still has a significant amount of poverty. Many families say this excursion is the most memorable of their holiday, and when they return home children are often inspired to undertake their own fundraising efforts to send equipment back to the school.
The Islands
The smaller islands dotted around Viti Levu range from highend luxury private islands to budget backpacker resorts. A firm family favourite is Castaway Island Resort, just a short boat transfer from the main island. Offering everything you want in an island escape and much much more, this little slice of paradise has families returning year after year. The island’s 70 hectares are covered in rich tropical rainforests and surrounded by pristine white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs and the azure waters of the Pacific. Accommodation is in beautifully appointed air-conditioned thatched bures that comfortably sleep four, and there is kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au
nothing more tranquil than stepping out of your bure in the morning, straight onto the sand. There are several restaurant options on the island including the Water’s Edge restaurant and the picturesque the Sundowner bar (with amazing pizzas). For a once-in-alifetime dining experience, book a nanny and dine at the award-winning Restaurant 1808. Located on the beach, dine barefoot in the sand as the chef prepares a mouth-watering selection of Fiji-Asian fusion cuisine from the open-air kitchen. Being surrounded by stunning reefs and tropical waters, Castaway Island’s main offering is its array of water activities. Explore the reef straight off the beach, take a day trip to visit the beach where Castaway was filmed, head out dolphin watching or PADI scuba diving, or simply sit in a hammock and watch the waves gently lap the beach. For something a little different, catch a boat out to Cloud 9, a super-cool floating bar in the middle of the turquoise ocean. For those wishing to take it easy, there are two sparkling freshwater pools (one family friendly, one adult-only), an impeccable nanny service and a world-renowned kids’ club that offers a range of fun daily activities with a Fiji flavour. So, you can enjoy both the family-friendly aspect and the romantic offerings of this enchanting destination.

#createwelcome
LIZ DEVINE, HEAD OF HOUSE AT ST RITA’S COLLEGE, CLAYFIELD, IS DETERMINED TO CREATE A POSITIVE AND INCLUSIVE FUTURE, BRINGING THE IMPORTANT WORK OF MDA (MULTICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA) TO LIFE FOR STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL. WE CHAT TO THIS INSPIRATIONAL TEACHER TO FIND OUT MORE. Tell us about the aim of MDA… MDA stands for Multicultural Development Australia. Simply speaking, MDA settles and supports people who are new arrivals in Queensland, be they refugees, students, migrants or people seeking asylum. They give them guidance and help to start their lives here. It’s all about inclusion, changing that conversation amongst the power brokers and giving everyone the same opportunities we take for granted to have the best chance of a decent life.
What inspired you to become so heavily involved with the work of MDA? Before becoming the Head of Marian House at St Rita’s, I worked at St. Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe, where I was heavily involved in their social justice and outreach programs. While teaching there I became involved with the Luminous Lantern Parade as a participant for a number of years. Then when I moved to St Rita’s, I was thrilled to discover that Marian had MDA as its ‘Presentation Ministry’, 32

raising funds and awareness for MDA and their work. I’ve also become personally good friends with a number of refugees – I find their stories both inspiring and humbling. I think we can all learn from listening to others’ stories. Listening to the diverse stories of new arrivals in Australia assists us to appreciate how lucky we are to be born here.
What programs have you introduced at St Rita’s to build multicultural awareness? For the past three years in my role I have worked to raise the profile of MDA and what they do to the whole St Rita’s school community. Events such as the Luminous Lantern Parade that started with eight students walking in the parade in 2015, has now grown to almost 60 students and 11 staff in 2017. This year, Marian House facilitated a lantern-making workshop which was open to the whole school. We made a wonderful replica of Venerable Nano Nagle’s lantern – the founder of the Presentation Sisters. Nano Nagle became known as ‘the Lady with the Lantern’ for her work kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

in reaching out to those who could not afford education in Cork, Ireland. We thought this was a fitting inaugural lantern for our school to carry in the parade. St Rita’s was selected as the school to be involved in the ‘live cross’ to the news on the night of the parade, which was very exciting! A number of students were interviewed about our involvement in MDA on the night. Marian House also holds an annual ‘Bake Off’ where students bring an amazing array of beautiful cakes and biscuits to sell to the staff and students of the school. All money raised from this event is donated directly to the ‘Donate a Ride’ program. This program provides Go Cards for newly arrived refugees to enable them to attend job interviews and make them feel like a worthwhile and participating member of society.
What has been your favourite event so far? By far this year’s Luminous Lantern Parade – as it showcased that young people are willing and can change the conversation about diversity. It was so peaceful yet powerful to see so many St Rita’s students prepared to give up their Friday night to walk alongside newly arrived people in Australia and say ‘Welcome’.
What events/activities do you have planned in the future? Marian House will also be participating in the ‘Welcome Wall’ on the MDA website. This is a place where students will create colourful messages of welcome to new arrivals in Queensland, by taking a photograph of themselves holding

this welcome sign, then post it on their personal Instagram page with the hashtag #createwelcome, connecting it then to the MDA website – their growing photo ‘welcome wall’.
How do you think this work benefits the students? All students need to see glimmers of hope in our world. With increasing bitterness and negativity of some prominent world leaders against people seeking asylum and refugees, it is important that students see that not everyone holds this belief. The students need a voice to be part of a positive, bright and inclusive future. These opportunities for advocacy are critical for them to see that in fact they CAN make a difference. Our school motto is ‘Virtute non Verbis’ – ‘Actions not words’. By actively campaigning for inclusion and diversity in our society, students are, in fact, being women of action right here at school.
Why do you think it is important to raise awareness of multicultural issues today? I believe everyone needs to feel as though they have some power to shape the future of society – not just political leaders or people in traditional positions of power brokerage. Advocacy for all people is a positive move forward, demonstrating that many small voices can make big changes. MDA is all about ‘changing the conversation’ about new arrivals in Queensland – and making that conversation one of welcome and hope for all.
