FAMILY: Taking a global adventure with the kids
TRAVEL: The idyllic family-friendly paradise of Fiji
[WELCOME]
Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss was one of my favourite books as a child, and is still one of my favourites to read to my own kids. Not just because of the curiosity it sparks and the confidence it builds in your ability to navigate through life’s adventures… You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, You can steer yourself any direction you choose. But also, the reminder that this adventure isn’t always going to be easy… that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you. The resilience that kids need in today’s world is critical, and this quest for life experience has become a leading driver for many family adventures. A visit to the local museum is not about observing artefacts in boxes, but about getting your hands dirty and understanding things at a grass-roots level; a trip to France is no longer just about seeing the Eiffel Tower, but about trying the food, learning the language and understanding the culture. Therefore, this issue we’ve set out explore the many ways in which we can bring a little adventure and culture to our kids' lives, in our World Issue! In our Family feature, we chat to a local travel expert about the value of taking an extended trip when the kids are little, and how you go about planning an adventure of your own, while our Education feature looks at the imperative for raising global citizens and what one school in Brisbane is doing to ensure their students get the world education they need. We also take a tour of Sunshine Beach State School whose accreditation as an international school has led to them becoming a leading destination for international families seeking to undertake their own cultural immersion experience. And for those seeking to escape the daily grind we check out the idyllic family-friendly paradise of Fiji (bliss!). Staying closer to home, if you want to sample a little culinary diversity but don’t fancy the long-haul flight we’ve rounded up the best kid-friendly international restaurants across the region. And for those of you looking for a local family adventure with a difference we’ve also taken a tour around the best farmstays on our doorstep. Plus, with all the usual news, local events, school notices, and travel products, it’s time to dust off that passport and get set to explore! As always, if you have any stories or news to share with our growing community, just drop me a line at editor@ mothergoosemedia.com.au. I’d love to hear from you!

EVERY 60 SECONDS, 111 CUBIC METRES OF SANDCASTLES ARE BEING BUILT WORLDWIDE
LANDMARK PUBLIC SCULPTURE UNVEILED
Stockland and the Sunshine Coast Council have unveiled a landmark six-metre high public sculpture within the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct. The playful artwork featuring a cartwheeling child, titled iDIDIT!, symbolises the joy of childhood, learning and the importance of play in human development, and is already proving to be a popular ‘selfie’ opportunity. The sculpture weighs eight tonnes and is made up of more than 1,000 individual parts of weathering plate steel. Taking eight months to create, veteran Sunshine Coast artist Russell Anderson created the public artwork after his design concept was selected from submissions from artists across Australia. Sunshine Coast Council Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said iDIDIT! was a fantastic addition to the region’s growing public art collection.

LOCAL BUSINESS MUM IS A ‘RISING STAR’ Sunshine Coast mum, Kym Foster of Shareshop, has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 AusMumpreneur Awards as a ‘Rising Star’. “I had just had my second child and I wanted more luxuries in my life such as massages and babysitting but felt guilty about spending the money on them. I wanted a flexible way to use my various skills that meant I could still have those things. Swapping seemed too restrictive so other barter-type options didn’t suit me. That’s when I thought that I mustn’t be the only one to feel this way, so I decided to create something myself!” Shareshop is an online money-free marketplace that connects people and resources, allowing people and businesses

CALLING ALL NINJA’S ON THE COAST! The Sunshine Coast’s first high-octane adventurism business is opening it’s doors in Caloundra on Saturday 9th September and all budding ninjas are invited to come down and test their skills in the adrenaline pumping climbing and training centre. Owner, Brad Teys, describes the centre as “a mind and body experience for the whole family, with a focus on getting kids away from the screen, reconnecting with nature and building a generation of resilient, strong, fit, future leaders.” The Adventurism centre features a challenging, but safe, physical, indoor climbing experience managed and run by a team of highly skilled, experienced, qualified and fully insured instructors. As well as the indoor climbing wall and bouldering centre, Adventure Empire is hosting an outdoor, active and fun school holiday program, with interactive activities each day from mountain biking adventures and fishing to team-building fun. Adventurism is also being launched at a number of Caloundra Schools in Term 4, as an alternative to traditional sports programs. The programs focus on growing resilience in youngsters with specially tailored activities designed to build teamwork, coordination, fitness and agility. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

NEW YMCA CHILDCARE CENTRE AT SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Smart Pups trainer Ella and dogs Waylan and Wesley with students from Sunshine Beach State School
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the well renowned YMCA have joined forces to provide a stateof-the-art childcare and education facility for hospital employees and local Sunshine Coast families. The building has been designed to allow toddlers and children up to the age of five to move freely between outdoor and indoor spaces. Parents are welcome to drop in any time to see their children, and many breastfeeding mothers take advantage of the hospital's paid breastfeeding breaks to stop in for feeds. A huge outdoor space that is equal in size to the indoor classrooms and baby nurseries includes a community garden, a rock climbing wall, swings, sandpits and a mud pit. The mud pit is a unique and very popular part of the centre’s outdoor play space. YMCA SCUH Hospital childcare holds a philosophy to support the SCUH community based upon mindfulness and positivity, supporting children’s emotional growth through a circle of security and a hands-on connection with nature.
‘STORY OF THE YEAR’ NOMINATION FOR SUNSHINE COAST SCHOOLS Our Lady of the Rosary School, Caloundra, and Brightwater State School, Mountain Creek, have been nominated for ‘Story of the Year’ in Wakakirri. Established in 1992, Wakakirri is Australia’s largest Story-Dance Festival. The Aboriginal word Wakakirri means ‘to dance a story’ according to Wangaaypuwan people from Cobar NSW. Each year over 20,000 students across Australia create Story-Dances for Wakakirri that reflect their students’ thoughts, ideas and aspirations. These stories are performed in professional theatres in front of the official ‘Wakakirri Panel’ who are searching for ‘Story of the Year’. Over 1 million people watch Wakakirri performances each year. Judge Dale Pengelly commented that the performance by Our Lady of the Rosary was seamlessly put together. "Great use of props and costumes, and sets," he said. "Travelling through time clearly displayed. Stunning music choices, solid teamwork with well connected performers being totally believable."

SMART PUPS FOR SUNSHINE BEACH Students at Sunshine Beach State School have welcomed assistance dogs in training, who are experiencing the school environment as part of a Smart Pups pilot program at Maryborough Correction Centre. The dogs have spent six months in the correctional centre being taught a variety of tasks including wheelchair work, opening doors, picking up dropped items and turning on lights in readiness for life with a special needs child. Over the past five years the school has welcomed seventeen Smart Pups in training. Teacher Carol Sharpe said, “It is a win-win situation training Smart Pups at Sunshine Beach State School. The Smart Pup receives the essential training in the school environment and the Sunshine Beach students discover how Smart Pups can assist children with disabilities, enhancing the learner’s empathy and understanding of those with special needs. Over the years, it has become obvious that having a Smart Pup in the classroom creates a calming environment resulting in a more focused and enhanced learning environment.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

AN INCREASING NUMBER OF FAMILIES ARE CHOOSING TO HIT PAUSE ON LIFE AND TAKE AN EXTENDED TRIP WHEN THE KIDS ARE YOUNG. AND WITH A LITTLE PLANNING IT COULD BE THE GREATEST ADVENTURE YOUR FAMILY EVER SHARES. It could be six weeks touring around Australia, driving a motorhome across Europe, or spending a several months undertaking charity work in Asia. Whatever your destination, many families are choosing to pack up and hit the road when the kids are little, giving them some of the most significant life experiences they could ever hope for. Georgina Grandi, Personal Travel Manager from Travel Managers, believes that travelling when kids are younger is the perfect time. “They are excited about the adventure, and you can start building a family’s love of travel from a young age,” she explained. “Also, they haven’t yet started school so it won’t interrupt their school education.” Though people like to think they have a work/life balance, the reality is often very different, and removing everyone from the day-to-day routine can offer genuine quality time and a chance to connect as a family unit. Most importantly, Georgina believes that an adult’s love for travel shouldn’t have to end when you have kids. “Take them along for the adventure. The kids will love you for it.”
Travel with kids today
The experience of travelling with children has changed dramatically in recent years. Gone are the days of one movie screen at the front of the plane and boring museum displays. Today, kids are catered for at every turn with in-flight entertainment, hands-on exhibitions, menus with colouring activities, and family-friendly hotels. Today’s mini explorers also have the world at their fingertips, with Google Earth, and encyclopedia and translation apps to enrich every experience. And of course, they can also now stay in touch with friends and family back home as they go.
The world is a classroom
Some of the best life lessons are found outside a textbook. “Travelling teaches kids life skills such as respect, resilience and patience,” Georgina said. “It also captures children’s imagination and their senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. The excitement of fireworks, the smell of the noodle markets, the thrill of entering an underground cave.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au
There are also practical experiences such as using different currencies, passports and learning a different language, and it can be the start of their immersion into history and geography. “It always amazes me when meeting kids from a different country who speak a different language and grow up in different environments,” Georgina added. “They play the same games, laugh at the same jokes, and genuinely love people visiting their country. It’s wonderful to see your children playing with children of other countries in their beautiful and natural way.” Becoming immersed in a new culture, children are also inspired to try new food and see the world from a different perspective. “I have a very fussy eater and I always find that when we travel, he will try new foods that I can put on his ‘can now eat’ list when we get home,” Georgina said. “It’s a small win buts it’s a win!”
TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELLING
WITH YOUNG KIDS • Be prepared for delays and last-minute changes. • Never assume your kids can wait for the next toilet stop!
• Know where the parks located so the kids can run around. • Check airports for kids’ play areas and facilities. • Book an apartment so you have kitchen facilities. It will save you money in the long run and you get to visit the supermarket or deli to try local specialties. • Check everyone’s passports that they won’t expire for at least six months after the trip. • Make sure vaccinations are all up to date. • Check the Department of Foreign Affair website (www.dfat.gov.au) for each country to intend to visit for up-to-date information.

[FAMILY]
DON’T FORGET… â Always carry a medical kit. â Pack a small backpack that kids can carry themselves with their own essentials. â Always have a sling or carrier for babies. â Use scooters for older kids to get around on, and consider a hiking back pack for little ones. â Be ruthless with non-essentials. Kids really don’t need much beyond a special cuddly toy, and an iPad with books, games and movies. â Give kids a diary or old camera to record their own memories. It will be interesting to look back on the trip from their perspective. â Rather than take your heavy pram, take a cheaper umbrella stroller that is light and convenient. Most airports will allow you to take it all the way to the gate. â Take a spare pair of clothes in your hand luggage for everyone + snacks + hand wipes. â Take a list of all current medications – contact lenses, glasses etc. â If you are planning on renting a property, take with you evidence of credit rating and letters of reference.
Getting started
Though there are many amazing corners of the world to visit, travel with little ones does come with some restrictions, so choose a trip to suit your whole family. Trekking the Himalayas with a toddler might be out, but the USA and Southeast Asia are very kid-friendly. If you are travelling with older kids, get them involved in choosing a destination – they might have a burning desire to see penguins in the wild, or go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. If you aren’t sure what will suit your family, Georgina recommends starting off doing a long drive in Australia. “It will show you how well the kids travel and what they enjoy (and don’t enjoy). As an example, we did a great road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, we took a month all up but spent a week travelling in each direction.” Try making the drive part of the holiday, taking different routes in each direction and making the stops fun. “We travelled via the coast in one direction and
then went inland on the return. Australia is a magnificent country, get out there and explore it. It’s on your doorstep!” If you want to venture a little further, try driving a motorhome around a couple of the US states. “Instead of heading straight to Disneyland, make your way to a National Park. They are full of fascinating sights, great walks and the stops are always interesting. You can then use Disneyland as a bribe for the kids!” If you want to head even further afield, Georgina suggests a rail journey through Europe. “Depending on which destinations you visit, you will probably get the kids’ rail for free. It varies for each country but in general, kids under 4–6 years are free.” If you are planning on driving, Georgina recommends not driving more than 400kms a day. “The kids get restless after this time and it means you won’t get tired from too much driving, especially in unfamiliar territory.”
What to do when you get there
Rather than keep moving around all the time, have a base and use it to take day trips. This means you aren’t packing and unpacking all the time. It also helps the kids to settle rather than be overwhelmed by constant change. Once settled, Georgina recommends look for activities that will be fun for everyone. “It is no fun if you are at kids’ parks all day, so mix it up. Go to a park in the morning and then when the kids are tired, put them in the stroller and make your way to something else such as a museum. However, always check ahead with museums, as many now have kid zones with fabulous activities.” Though you might want to fit in all the sights, slow your pace down and try not to be on the go all the time. “Take time to hang at the beach or with the locals,” added Georgina. “The kids don’t need rollercoasters, they just want to play in the sand and eat ice cream. These are the times when funny situations happen that are unplanned but remain with you forever.” Last but definitely not least, research, research, research! “The better prepared you are for the trip, the easier it is going to be,” said Georgina. “If you are time poor, use a Travel Manager to help you in the planning.”

[WORLD]
EDUCATING for the
WORLD of TOMORROW by PAUL BROWNING, HEADMASTER, ST PAUL’S SCHOOL IN NORTH BRISBANE
WHAT WILL THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE? It’s a big question – one that has puzzled many of the world’s smartest thinkers. It’s also an important question, particularly when it comes to education. If education is meant to prepare young people for their future lives, it makes sense to contemplate what that future looks like. It’s this question that drove an expansive research project at St Paul’s School in North Brisbane. In it, 30 leading minds were interviewed from across the globe and from a variety of fields (economists, philosophers, politicians, demographers, theologians and more) in an attempt to paint a picture of what the world will look like in the year 2028. The answers were fascinating. Some of the key takeaways from the research include: • Up to 50 per cent of today’s jobs will be replaced by robotics and artificial intelligence. • The average human will be a 34-year-old Indian man. • Chinese will be the world’s most spoken language, closely followed by Spanish. • Wearable technology will be controlled by thought. • Car insurance won’t exist as most cars will be driverless. • The most fought over natural resource will be water. 20
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
Findings like these prompted St Paul’s School to re-evaluate what an education worth having really looks like – especially if today’s young people will enter a world where the only certainty is change. It became increasingly apparent that the skills and dispositions students graduate with will be different to those valued by educators in times past. Students will need high levels of creativity if they are to potentially create the jobs of tomorrow. They will need a global perspective if they are to work across different cultures. Given the likely development of technology, the classrooms of tomorrow may be virtual ones with Australian students in Brisbane learning side-by-side (perhaps via holograms) with a student in the United States, Finland, China and Japan – all at the same time. Students will therefore need high levels of empathy if they are going to have the patience and desire to collaborate and cooperate with students from vastly different cultures.
THINKING LIKE AN ENTREPRENEUR Closer to home, it’s increasingly likely that students will need the mindset of an entrepreneur. After all, if 50 per cent of today’s jobs are likely to disappear over the next 20 years (as predicted by Oxford University) students will likely need to create their own employment. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

It’s this vision that prompted St Paul’s School to partner with internationally-recognised start-up hub, River City Labs, to create Australia’s first Entrepreneurs Club. However, it wasn’t just students that were invited to participate. Given the need for ongoing education amongst Australians of all ages and professions, St Paul’s ran this Club with students learning alongside their teachers, their parents and members of the broader community. All up, 23 people participated in this prototype program, forming teams and designing their own business. By the end, teams pitched their ideas to a panel of investors, some teams have since received investment and are now inmarket generating returns. The course was designed from scratch by in-house expertise, and coaches from the corporate sector (lawyers, accountants, IT professionals, marketing consultants, angel investors and experienced start up veterans) had regular input to both the program’s shape and the individual teams’ efforts.
A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE While the capacity for entrepreneurship is important, equally important is the potential for students to think globally. With the world getting increasingly smaller, it is increasingly likely that the students of today will have careers working alongside people from multiple races, ethnicities and cultures. With this comes a sense of social responsibility. In Australia, students may not always feel that they are well off. Their exposure to cultures in less fortunate areas of the world is often quite limited. The question for educators is: how can you grow a global perspective that is underpinned by an attitude of charity? St Paul’s sought to address this issue by conducting an annual outreach trip to a less fortunate geographic neighbour.
However, the most important characteristic from this Club isn’t the businesses themselves. It’s the mindsets and characteristics students are developing through the process. A key component of the course is ‘pivoting’ – identifying the shortcomings and ‘failings’ of your business idea and then heading in a different direction to explore its potential. This plays into one of the key mindsets corporate Australia has bemoaned the lack of in young graduates – resilience. Increasingly, young people are not finishing school or university with the potential to bounce back from failure. When they encounter a road block, many young people will simply give up rather than persist and try to identify alternative solutions. The Entrepreneurs Club really emphasises the value of learning from failure and using ingenuity and creativity to identify a new approach. 22

The schools visited show incredibly generous hospitality and it is important to remember that they are giving their time, talents and goodwill out of their poverty – not their wealth. The trip is one of the most effective initiatives in building a global capacity for students. For a brief moment, they are without their phones and creature comforts and are forced to confront and appreciate a culture vastly different to their own. Students always return to Australia with a renewed perspective – one that challenges the concept that ‘more is always better’. An attitude of servant leadership is experienced and cherished.
WHAT’S NEXT? Each year, over 20 St Paul’s students from Years 10 to 12, visit the island of Santo in northern Vanuatu and engage with the communities of Sakau, Turtle Bay and Lorevilko. The School has been sending students to these villages for the past seven years and the impact (on both students and those visited) is significant. Students work hard in preparation to teach in the schools they visit. The reception in each of these communities to the students’ visit is always special. Not just from the schools, but from the entire community who often greet the students with songs and dancing.
The impetus is now on the next generation to identify what kind of a world they want to live in. When today’s youngest students finish Year 12, the rapid changes across the globe brought on by technology will make much of daily life barely recognisable. What used to be key parts of growing up could soon be obsolete. You might be able to forget about teaching your children to drive – their new cars will be driverless. Will they ever need to walk to the shops given the increasing convenience of delivery services? The task for parents and schools is to partner together and ensure every child receives an education worth having – one where the future is exciting and full of hope.
St Paul’s is a Pre-Prep to Year 12 Anglican school in North Brisbane. The School’s vision is to be the national leader in educational thinking and practice and help equip young people for an uncertain future by providing an education worth having.

A GLOBAL
EDUCATION TUCKED AMONGST THE TREES IN THE NORTHERN END OF THE SUNSHINE COAST, SITS A VIBRANT STATE SCHOOL THAT IS EMBRACING DIVERSITY AND BRINGING UNIQUE GLOBAL EXPERIENCES TO ITS PRIMARY STUDENTS. AS AN ACCREDITED INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AND WITH NO CATCHMENT AREA, THIS UNASSUMING SCHOOL IS OPEN TO STUDENTS FROM ALL AREAS, CULTURES AND COUNTRIES… AND THE DIFFERENCE IT IS MAKING TO STUDENTS IS IMMEASURABLE. On first glance, Sunshine Beach State School looks just like a typical state primary school. Kids playing in the playground in broad-brimmed hats, handball and cartwheels aplenty, and bags on hooks. But look a little closer and you’ll find that the school is one of the most diverse on the Coast. Because, as the only accredited primary Education Queensland International School in the area, Sunshine Beach State School is a unique blend of state school and global learning.
But why is an international school so important for the Coast? With stunning beaches, incredible year-round weather and attractions such as Noosa National Park, Noosa has always been a highly-regarded tourist destination. However, rather than head to the capital cities, international families are now choosing Noosa as a cultural immersion destination and a place to learn English. Every year, Sunshine Beach State School welcomes students from 26

many countries including Brazil, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, China and Korea. Jenny Easey, Principal at Sunshine Beach State School explained that there is a growing number of international families looking to truly experience the Noosa lifestyle. “Most families come for complete cultural immersion and to learn English. They might be here on holiday, or taking a sabbatical from work. Some families come for just three to six weeks; others come for up to 12 months. We have a lot of families that have returned several times now!” But it’s not just visiting students that come to the school. With no catchment area, families can enroll in Sunshine Beach State School from across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. “We also have permanent international students, where families have relocated from India, Japan, South Africa and many other countries. Families moving to the Sunshine Coast now seek out our school, as we have the diversity and programs in place to wholly accommodate international students and their families.” kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
BENEFITS FOR EXISTING STUDENTS
With international students coming to the school from Prep through to Year 6, visiting students are completely integrated into the mainstream classes, immersed in a rich daily learning program and taking part in all school events. Classrooms have additional teacher aides to support those students with language differences. Because of this complete immersion, even when they arrive with minimal English skills they leave almost fluent.
With constant exposure to other languages, cultures and friendships, the benefits of the International Program for existing students at Sunshine Beach State School are numerous. Students have the opportunity to truly experience different cultures, providing them with a different way of seeing the world and getting to know families on a day-to-day level.
As well as the language skills, visiting students get to experience Australian culture – they play Oztag, go to the beach, learn to surf, and join in everyday sports activities. International students are instantly part of the class and friendships are formed quickly. So much so that, within a day of arriving, children from all cultures and backgrounds are happily finding ways to play together, breaking down any language differences. “It’s amazing how many friendships can be quickly formed over a game of handball!” exclaimed Maree Thomson, International Coordinator at Sunshine Beach State School. Jenny added, “They just join in, they learn to be resilient and creative, whilst local students experience a bigger wider world. It’s a very enriching experience for everyone.” And with the program growing in recognition, students now travel with a purpose to join the school. “We’ve had a couple of musical students travelling here with their instruments to join in our musical program," Jenny said.
Students also learn to make friends and get creative with communication, understanding that difference is not a barrier. Friendships are formed and remain long after the visitors return to their home country, with emails keeping friends in touch across the globe. Visiting students also change the dynamic in the classroom. Always eager to learn, this motivation rubs off on the local students creating a more engaged and diverse learning experience. With extensive exposure to different languages, senior students have acquired adequate language skills to become interpreters at assembly for younger visiting students, something that is a rare mentoring experience.
SUCCESS STORY After 15 years of bringing cultural diversity to the classroom, the International Program at Sunshine Beach State School is now an integral part of the school community. Principal Jenny Easey said, “The international program has been a great success – it’s wonderful for our students and the greater school community. Existing students learn as much from our guests as they learn from the Australians.” And it’s not just the students that benefit. With visiting parents also looking for a complete cultural experience, they are eager to get involved at the school and the local activities. “We usually try to connect families with other families in the area when they arrive to give them the community support.” Jenny explained. “Very quickly, parents get involved in the school, volunteering to introduce new foods and flavours to the students – Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Czechoslovakian – or speaking about their culture in the classroom.” Jenny concluded, “It is a privilege for students at Sunshine Beach State School to learn alongside international students in mainstream classes. They have the opportunity to make new friends, learn about other countries and cultures, and experience a different view on the world.” Promoting diversity, incorporating multicultural perspectives across everyday learning, introducing human rights, tolerance and cross-cultural communication skills, the program has now become a valued part in the education landscape of the Sunshine Coast.

And we want it all in a simple bundle where we don’t have to worry about anything – we’ve got enough to do every day! Asking too much? Well, maybe not. Because nestled in the heart of the Pacific is the jewel of the family holiday crown… Fiji. Fiji consists of 332 islands, of which 106 are inhabited. A multi-cultural tapestry of Fijian, Tongan, Indian and European, the people are some of the friendliest you could meet. Just a 3.5-hour flight from Brisbane, this tropical paradise couldn’t be simpler to get to. And with resorts that are specifically designed with little ones in mind, this is familyfriendly travel at its best.

One of the more popular resorts with families is the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort in Sigatoka, situated on the Coral Coast side of the island. And from the moment you arrive, greeted with a hearty ‘Bula’ at the entrance, every experience leaves you loving the islands more and more. Accommodation comes in a range of styles, from your own beachside bure to modern hotel rooms. The bures are perfect for families and a standard bure can comfortably accommodate four people. Studies have shown that young children can ask between 25-50 questions an hour before they enter Prep. The research from psychologist, author and lecturer, Susan Engel, has also shown that this decreases to two questions an hour in less engaging Prep environments. As we prepare children for school, one of the greatest tools we can equip children with is the ability to ask questions, and let curiosity fuel their learning. At Sunshine Coast Grammar School, our research based Early Years program, nurtures a learning environment where questioning and wondering is celebrated, and curiosity flourishes.

But what Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is most famous for is its exceptional nanny service. Whether you want to enjoy a romantic meal, a kid-free swim, or need some serious bliss time at the world-renowned Bebe Spa Sanctuary (the Signature Massage is heavenly), the nannies remove all the challenges of a normal family holiday and leave you with the best of both worlds – holidaying with the kids whilst also having chance to reconnect as a couple. As well as the facilities, there are stacks of restaurant and bar options on site. The family-friendly Vale Ni Kana is located at the heart of the resort and serves weekly themed dinners with live entertainment that will keep even the fussiest of kids happy. Or for a fine dining experience try the award-winning Ivi Restaurant, recently awarded Fiji’s ‘Best Visitor Dining Experience’ at the 2017 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards (try the Fijian Kokoda and the flambéed orange crepe – seriously yum!). For a romantic sunset cocktail, head up to the idyllic Kalokalo Bar perched on the hill overlooking the resort, or for a relaxed drink try the beachside Sundowner Bar.
Things to do Just a five-minute hop from Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is the Kula Eco Park. Perfect for younger families, it’s easy to get around and you can get up close and personal with a host of tropical creatures – hold an iguana, pet a snake, feed a turtle, and wander through the bird enclosure where parrots fly freely overhead. The wildlife park has a great splash-and-play zone and waterslide in the centre, perfect for little ones to cool off. There is also a fabulous zip-line (minimum weight for riders is 35kg) which takes riders on an amazing ride through the rainforest canopy, gliding from the top of the park to the valley floor.

For an excursion with a difference, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort offers a unique village tour, which includes a visit to a local school that the resort supports. This day trip is particularly poignant for families as it allows children to experience the school environment for kids in Fiji, a country that still has a significant amount of poverty. Many families say this excursion is the most memorable of their holiday, and when they return home children are often inspired to undertake their own fundraising efforts to send equipment back to the school.

The Islands
The smaller islands dotted around Viti Levu range from highend luxury private islands to budget backpacker resorts. A firm family favourite is Castaway Island Resort, just a short boat transfer from the main island. Offering everything you want in an island escape and much much more, this little slice of paradise has families returning year after year. The island’s 70 hectares are covered in rich tropical rainforests and surrounded by pristine white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs and the azure waters of the Pacific. Accommodation is in beautifully appointed air-conditioned thatched bures that comfortably sleep four, and there is nothing more tranquil than stepping out of your bure in the morning, straight onto the sand. There are several restaurant options on the island including the Water’s Edge restaurant and the picturesque the Sundowner bar (with amazing pizzas). For a once-in-alifetime dining experience, book a nanny and dine at the award-winning Restaurant 1808. Located on the beach, dine barefoot in the sand as the chef prepares a mouth-watering selection of Fiji-Asian fusion cuisine from the open-air kitchen. Being surrounded by stunning reefs and tropical waters, Castaway Island’s main offering is its array of water activities. Explore the reef straight off the beach, take a day trip to visit the beach where Castaway was filmed, head out dolphin watching or PADI scuba diving, or simply sit in a hammock and watch the waves gently lap the beach. For something a little different, catch a boat out to Cloud 9, a super-cool floating bar in the middle of the turquoise ocean. For those wishing to take it easy, there are two sparkling freshwater pools (one family friendly, one adult-only), an impeccable nanny service and a world-renowned kids’ club that offers a range of fun daily activities with a Fiji flavour. So, you can enjoy both the family-friendly aspect and the romantic offerings of this enchanting destination. 36

Meet the Little Critters WHEN CRAIG DONALDSON AND BYRON CANN BEGAN RESCUING UNWANTED FARM ANIMALS, THEY NEVER IMAGINED THEIR VENTURE WOULD BECOME A PLATFORM TO EDUCATE PEOPLE AND BRING JOY TO MANY DISADVANTAGED QUEENSLAND CHILDREN. WE CHAT TO CRAIG TO FIND OUT MORE. What inspired you to start Little Critters? Byron and I started by rescuing dairy farm males and taking in unwanted farm animals. We soon had a large number of them and saw Little Critters as a way for us to fund the animal rescue. Byron is also president of Bribie And Districts Wildlife Rescue, so our farm has always been a place of mercy for animals. We use Little Critters as a vehicle to rescue animals and educate people. It allows children and adults alike, the opportunity to interact with animals they don’t get to see in the suburbs. After our first few events we were astounded with just how little people really knew about farm animals and how their dairy products and meat get to the table.
What animals do you have today, and what range of events do they appear at? At our home/farm, we have almost anything you can imagine: horses, ostriches, macaws, snakes, lizards, possums, bats. When we exhibit we take out goats, sheep, 44

piglets, chickens, ducks and any babies we may be raising at the time. We attend all manner of places and events: schools, childcare centres, aged care facilities, shopping centres and even private parties. Unfortunately, the word ‘petting zoo’ can be synonymous with negativity. Not all petting zoos are equal. We give our time and money to saving these animals and native wildlife, our animals are not exploited, they love what they do!
What charities do you work with? Four times a year we attend Keema Children’s Foundation’s Little Stars Kid Camps. It is basically a really fun day put on by a number of dedicated volunteers for children in foster care. This year we have also raised money for ‘Mater Little Miracles’, ‘Pay A Sack Forward’ and ‘Buy A Bale’. We are committed to our charity work but often have to make the tough decision to slow down and leave time for us earn funds to continue our mission. kidsonthecoast.com.au • kidsinthecity.com.au

[LOCAL LIFE]
What’s your favourite part of running Little Critters? People come and visit us and just see them as animals, for me it’s very different. Some of the animals we take have been with us since the very beginning. I have become very attached, they are like my work colleagues and I am so very lucky to spend every day with them. I don’t like to play favourites, but I couldn’t cope without Jessie my boy goat, or Baaar bara my old girl merino sheep. The two of them are like my best friends and I love working with them.
We hear that a favourite hen was stolen recently. How terrible! Is she now home safely? How do you think petting zoos help kids with difficulties? Research has shown that spending time in the presence of animals can help develop empathy skills, social skills, peer relationships, coping skills and improve an individual’s self-esteem. Research tends to focus more on dogs as they are able to serve a variety of functions and are often trained as therapy dogs and service dogs, with great results. What we have discovered whilst working with many different people including young people and adults with difficulties and/or disabilities is that farm animals have a similar and long-lasting effect. Animals offer unbiased and unconditional affection that in turn contributes to meeting an individual’s emotional and social needs. We love to see their faces light up as our animals help to brighten their day.
We were at Sunshine Plaza for a week in the July school holidays. I didn’t notice until a member of public asked me where a certain chook was that she had seen earlier. It was very different to the other chickens we had so it was quite recognisable. The member of public stated that she saw a teenage girl cuddling the chicken. The girl then had her friend pass her bags over the fence to her inside the farm yard. Next thing the girl leaves very quickly with her bags and the chicken has disappeared. We have never had anything like this happen before. It was quite distressing. We hope the girl is experienced with chickens and she took her because she really loved her, but we are highly concerned for the chicken’s welfare.
What are your most popular animals? Piglets and chickens! People go crazy for them both.
What's next for Little Critters? We plan on expanding our offering to also include wildlife exhibits. Again, focused on educating people about conservation, the animals and threats that exist to them. We are looking for people to join our team, we want to expand our rescue efforts and duplicate what we are doing.

By Heidi McKinnon. RRP $24.99 I just ate my friend. He was a good friend. But now he is gone. Would you be my friend? This hilarious story is about the search for friendship and belonging, and maybe a little bit about the importance of impulse control. The search for a true friend is something everyone can relate to – from the very young to the very old and this beautiful, innovate picture book will make you laugh out loud. For ages 2-6.
By Deborah Kelly, illustrated by Gwynneth Jones. RRP $24.99 Zane is different to other kids, he has his own made-up languages and is frightened of things that don’t bother other people. His father gets frustrated; his mother tries in vain to explain, but Zane just curls up and screams. Things seem bleak until one day, Zane’s big sister starts to draw a chalk rainbow at the top of the front steps. The Chalk Rainbow explores difference and diversity through a family living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is also a story of learning to look at the world through the eyes of others.
