can’t believe another school year is upon us already! As I prepare my own tribe for the return to school, my heart instinctively goes out to all the little ones that will be the ‘new kid’ this year – whether that’s starting childcare, stepping into Prep, joining a new school, or making the leap into Year 7. We’ve all been the new kid at some point, and no matter how old you are, it’s still a scary time. Even as adults – starting a new job or relocating to a new area – the ‘new kid’ stomach-churny feeling can quickly come flooding back. We’ve shifted schools recently, and as much as I encouraged my own kids to get involved and make new friends, when it came to doing it myself I really stumbled. Those first few afternoons at the school gates not knowing who to talk to. The first birthday party we were invited to and I’m found shuffling nervously under a tree whilst the kids happily slot into their new friendship groups. Needless to say, the littlies negotiated out of ‘new kid’ territory waaaaay faster than me! So, on the return to school, let’s remind our kids to include the new kid looking lost at break-time. And on the school run, let’s look

out for the new parent standing nervously at the gates. Reach out, smile and say ‘hi’. That small hand of friendship could make the world of difference to their school year, and you never know – you might just make a new friend. To get you ready for a new school year, this issue we are all about ‘Back to School’! Our local educators share their wisdom on transitioning into new classrooms. And this year the school ranking system changes from OP to ATAR, so we find out what that means for our older kids. We also find out how one school has recently introduced the IB Career Program and the difference that is making to opportunities for its high school students. But the summer holiday isn’t quite over yet! So, we also have a huge guide to the best family-friendly day trips across the region. How many can you tick off before you the summer is over? new children’s yoga studio has opened on the Sunshine Coast, teaching local kids skills to find and nurture their happy place. Leah, the founder of Zen Cat children’s yoga says the most beautiful thing about children is that they come into the world with innate joy. Yet as they experience life they can shift from this natural state. “Yoga is about connecting with this joy and nurturing this place within us,” explained Leah. “Being happy is most important! ecent graduates from Pacific Lutheran College reflected on their educational journey at the final chapel service recently, highlighting the culture, diversity, positive psychology and restorative practices within the College. “I am fortunate enough to have attended this very school for the entirety of my academic life,” said Ethan Hall, 2018 Graduate and Vice College Captain at Pacific Lutheran College. “Over the course of my own personal journey, I have been able to witness and experience not only the growth of myself and my peers, but the growth of the College. So much has changed during my 13 years here, but then, a lot hasn’t. The warmth, compassion ... the opportunity, the sense of community. Through it all, these things have remained constant.” ‘Flourishing through a culture of thinking’ was the inspired expression for 2018. “To flourish is to be more than successful. There is a richness and flair to flourishing that draws on creativity and the fullness of life,” Dr Dolling, Principal at Pacific Lutheran College, explained. “The 2018 Year 12 cohort encapsulated this. he start of the Prep year can not only be daunting for children, but for their parents too. For parents, there are healthy lunchboxes to plan, car park drop-offs to coordinate, uniforms to organise and stationery orders to process. Many parents may worry: will their child make friends? Will they grasp the knack of reading? And even, will they stay awake for the entire school day? Teachers at Matthew Flinders Anglican College are encouraging parents to enjoy the start of the Prep year so their children can too. of school approaches. “Many parents are unaware that they carry unvoiced fears about their child’s Prep year,” Prep teacher Alison Wilson explains. “And what’s more, parents may unwittingly project those fears onto their children. For example, if a parent is worried their child won’t feel confident to make new friends in Prep, then that parent may not realise they are communicating their unsettled feelings to their child whenever Prep is mentioned. To combat this worry, we encourage parents to commit to feeling confident, calm and happy about the start of school. By doing so, they exude positive vibes when their children look to them for guidance.”

Alison says at Flinders – where there are three Prep classes, each with a teacher and teacher-aide – parents are reminded that the Prep teachers ‘have got this’. “We want parents to feel completely confident in our ability to handle their child’s big feelings,” Alison says. “It’s our job as teachers to make our new Preppies feel comfortable and to show them how to make new friends. We have a whole bag of tricks to help create a sense of family and unity from day one. Prep is so much fun! Parents can trust that we will support their child to manage all of their emotions, from exhilaration to excitement, and even a little nervousness. They are so very capable and simply require the encouragement, support and belief in them that they can carry their own bag, unpack their lunch and change their shoes.

day, it is smiles galore and we love to see each of our students embracing the adventure of learning. The primary focus of Term One in Prep at Flinders is building relationships, establishing values of kindness and respect, and developing core early literacy and numeracy skills. This conscientious approach ensures that each child is known and appreciated as a whole person who is very important to the Flinders family. “We love Term One because it’s a happy and warm time that we spend getting to know one another,” Alison says. “We spend a large part of each day talking, singing, making, drawing and laughing about the things we love – our families, our pets, our bikes and scooters, our grandparents and cousins, our favourite books and songs, our trips to the beach and our holidays camping. We teach children about valuing difference and accepting people as they are. It’s beautiful to see the strong class bonds that form as they get to know each other better each day.” Flinders Prep teacher Maree Ram observes that some parents’ concerns stem from preconceived notions of what skills their child may need before commencing Prep. For example, many parents believe their child should be able to read before the first day of Prep. “Parents can rest assured that their child does not need to be able to read before they start Prep; that’s what school is for,” Maree says. “However, the important skills children do require are practical things like managing their own shoes on and off. Also, can your child confidently use the toilet themselves? Can they open their own lunch box and eat enough food to feel full? These are the things parents can help their children master before they start school.” Another concern for parents is their child’s exhaustion levels. Five days of schooling in a row each week is a big step-up for many children. Flinders has a transition phase where Prep students finish school early for the first three weeks of school so they may depart school calmly without the usual hustle and bustle of the end-of-school day. Maree says, “We encourage parents to forget about after-school activities during the Prep year. The children are stimulated enough from their long days and simply need play time at home to recharge for the next day. tending to veggie gardens, so our Preppies’ co-curricular activities are well and truly explored as a natural part of the school day.” Flinders Prep teacher Andrew Garrett works alongside Alison and Maree, and says parents should enjoy the pick-ups and dropoffs of each school day. “We want parents to remember that the act of dropping their child to their Prep door each morning and picking them up at the same spot each afternoon is a simple but important ritual that helps their child feel loved and safe,” Andrew said. “However, it’s also important to give children their independence. Parents should let their child carry their own bags, pack their own lunch boxes, and unpack their bags at the end of the day. All these activities that enable children to feel capable and organised are big confidence boosters.” Most of all, Flinders Prep teachers encourage new families to enjoy the Prep year. Head of Junior Primary Chris Curtain reminds parents, “Prep is a wonderful year!

I’m planning to set up a netball coaching academy for children with disabilities for my community project. By the time I leave MIC I will not only have sport and hands-on coaching experience, but I’ll also have qualifications in Fitness so I can work part-time in my career while I’m studying at uni.” MIC student Teisha James, 16, plans to be an elite netballer and will study sports science and fitness as part of her IB learning program.

A PASSION FOR FASHION “I want to work in the fashion industry so I’m excited to study Visual Art, Business and Entrepreneurship as well as get my Certificate II in Fashion Design and Technology, all before I finish school. This program is going to help set me up for my career as I’ll get experience in designing and understanding trends as ultimately my goal is to plan fashion shows. With two internships and work experience as well, I’ll get hands-on experience and make the connections I need to apply what I’m learning outside of school.” MIC student Paris Ramsay, 16, has her sights set on a career in the fashion industry and will study fashion and business.

12 with students choosing subjects from three elements, all of which are aligned with the student’s passions and career choice. The first element is at least three (and up to five) academic subjects from the IB Diploma Program, which include English and Math subjects as compulsory, with additional subjects selected depending on the student’s career choice. The second element is the four core components which are studied by all IBCP students and include Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning, Language Development and a two-year Reflective Project. These core subjects aim to develop responsibility, practical problemsolving and ethical understanding. Emphasis is on the development of the skills needed to successfully navigate higher education, the workplace and society and to make a difference in the world with students utilising their skills to deliver a project in the community. The third element is the career-related studies which relate to each student’s career interest. Courses may include TAFE subjects, University of the Sunshine Coast HeadStart Program subjects, in-school traineeships or internships. Career-related studies will be different for each student. The IB Career-related Program provides students with a combination of life experience, work experience and a qualification – all tailored around their passion – which makes them ideal candidates for many universities and employers. MAKING THE SWITCH FROM OP TO ATAR A new pathway to tertiary study for Queensland’s senior students is coming. Is your school ready?

rom 2019, a student who starts Year 11 in Queensland will graduate Year 12 with an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank ATAR, replacing the Overall Position (OP). The system will bring Queensland into line with other states and territories around Australia who already use ATAR, but it’s a new era for the next generation of senior students (and their parents) in Queensland.

WHAT IS AN ATAR? An ATAR is a number ranging between 99.95 (highest) to zero (lowest) which reports a student’s rank position relative to all other Year 12 students. Designed to compare students who have studied different senior subjects, it is based on a student’s overall academic performance, and allows students outcomes to be better understood and more easily comparable. To be eligible for an ATAR, students need to complete five general subjects, or four general subjects plus either one applied subject or VET course at AQF Certificate III or above. In Queensland, successful completion of an English subject will also be compulsory, but students’ English marks may not necessarily be used to calculate their ATAR. Most adults will say a library card. I loved my first library card. It opened the door to a world of fantasy and facts, as well as cassette tapes (anyone else remember borrowing those?) and a chance to discover book characters who are still friends today. Nowadays, a library card gives you access to a huge range of free resources including books, magazines, DVDs and toys. There is even an eLibrary where books, audio books, movies, music and magazines are all available to download or stream from home. But, aside from access to a wealth of free resources, a library card is the first card your child will ever own with their name on it. The card is theirs and with that comes a great opportunity to teach responsibility and many other valuable life lessons.

HOW TO BE A GOOD BORROWER Borrowing only works if you return the items, so a library card teaches kids to respect the return dates, whilst also empathising with the other children who are waiting patiently for you to return those items safely. ACCEPTING CONSEQUENCES Lost a card? Returned items late or damaged? These actions all have consequences that will teach your child responsibility and accountability. C H O O S I N G W I S E LY With huge shelves of books and DVDs to choose from, a library is a treasure trove of resources for kids. But you can’t borrow everything! A library card requires kids to learn moderation and develop decisionmaking skills. A SENSE OF BELONGING A library card gives kids a sense of ownership that the library is their place, full of things just for them which can be borrowed with their own card. WHY CHILDREN’S VISION is essential to learning

ision plays a vital role in a child’s development and progress at school. If the visual system does not function properly, learning can suffer. Children need good vision to co-ordinate eye movements, maintain clear focus as they read, and make quick focusing changes when looking up to the board and back to their desks. Not correcting vision problems early can lead to headaches, fatigue and other eyestrain problems. By the time symptoms are present it is much more difficult to treat eye problems.

So how young should children’s eyes be checked? David O’Neill from Looking Smart Optometrists recommends that every child from six months of age should have an eye exam. This should be followed up by a yearly exam until the age of six and then testing every two years after that. However, many kids have never had an eye exam. Everyone will go in for dental checks at an early age, but the eyes often are forgotten.

But what can you test for at six months? “There are several things, but primarily glaucoma and retinoblastoma are ruled out, the prescription is checked and we do our best to make sure there is not a turn in the eyes,” says David. “Turns in the eyes and severe longsightedness can be treated. The younger the patient, the easier it is to correct,” David continues. “If a turn in the eyes is found at six months to a year old, often this can be fixed via contact lenses which are put in by the optometrist and worn by the child for a month at a time. Trying to get a six-year-old baby to wear glasses is often impossible.” “If the turn is detected later then the child may require surgery or patching of an eye to help the now ‘lazy’ eye to see properly.” There is also technology available today called an autorefractor, to help assess a child’s vision without the patient saying a word. This uses a non-visible and painless laser to measure the exact size of the eye therefore tells the optometrist whether

the eye is longer/shorter than normal (Long/Short Sighted) or whether it is wider (Astigmatism). “These devices are invaluable on children who cannot give correct answers, and it’s a vital piece of equipment at Looking Smart!” says David. “Often the most frustrating thing about the old style of eye test is the time taken to give the right answers on which lens is ‘better’. To find out a prescription for glasses in under 20 seconds of just sitting still is amazing to a lot of parents.” David says that the majority of children checked are fine. “We give glasses to approximately 10 per cent of children tested. If the child does end up getting glasses they are often excited as the range of glasses is extensive these days and they can choose their colours and styles.” “In addition, 30 per cent of children get some type of exercise to be done to improve co-ordination or to get them to work their eyes in a more efficient manner,” says David. “This can often make the difference from good to great performance in school.” “Either way, it is worth confirming that your child’s eyesight is ready for the year ahead.”

The reason you are having difficulty at 2am is because the drive for sleep is lower here than before midnight. The fact that your sixmonth-old is only waking once overnight for

a feed is fantastic. To better answer this question. I would need to know what is happening at 2am. Is bub crying? Playing? What are you doing to try and get bub to sleep? Is it possible that your intervention is too stimulating? (Are you rocking, then trying to feed again, then leaving the room then putting down then picking up?) If bub is playing it indicates a developmental leap

For a five-week-old a lot of sleep issues are related to feeding. If bub is only going one hour between feeds it could be that he is not taking full feeds each time. Make sure he is actively feeding, stripping him off if need be. If you are having any issues beyond doing this seeking help from a Lactation Consultant is a good idea. With regards to promoting sleep, Dr Harvey Karp’s 5S’s are great for soothing: Swaddle, Suck, Sway, Side-laying (in arms if windy, not in the cot unless using a sleep positioner) and Shhh. Basically, re-create the womb environment. Arms down or arms across the chest swaddle is best, it stops the startle reflex. This will take a little bit of work, starting with positive sleep associations in his room, lots of play in there. From here you may look at co sleeping in his room so he is in the right room at least. From here into a cot (I don’t recommend a bed at this age, it tends to cause further dramas) and soothing from the other side of the cot, then working your way out of the room. You can do this as slow or as fast as you like depending on how your little one reacts. Expect it to take time. 18-month-olds have stamina, however, what is on your side is that they have comprehension!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE OF PARENTING A CHILD WITH AUTISM? My seven-year-old son has severe autism, and my experiences range from the good, the not-so-good, and the ‘oh… ok then’ bits! Following the initial diagnosis, I remember having so many thoughts running through my head: “I can’t be alone! But how can I find who else is going through something similar?” “If only I could just ask someone who understands what my child is going through. Anyone, anywhere!” “I can’t even remember what happened yesterday, let alone last week!” “Where did I put that form/ letter/ evidence? I just can’t keep on top of it all.” Something that became very clear, very quickly, was the benefits of having a wider social care system which recognises, acknowledges and supports the requirements that we (as parents and carers) have too. With 8,760 hours in each year, even if you receive excellent therapy and support during the week, you can’t take those specialists home with you. We found ourselves imagining being able to speak to a therapist in real time about a situation which was unfolding right at that moment. No need to wait for the next appointment, no need to drive anywhere – just a chance to deal with that one challenge, right now.

DIAGNOSIS OF AN ALLERGY Allergies are usually diagnosed by an allergist or immunologist using a skin prick test after a referral from a doctor, usually following a reaction. This may require the child’s carer to have an EpiPen with them at all times. The good news is, many children do grow out of their allergies.

DIAGNOSIS OF AN INTOLERANCE

Around 1 in 20 children and 1 in 100 adults are currently living with a diagnosed food allergy. There is an even greater number of people living with food intolerances and sensitivities. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ALLERGY AND AN INTOLERANCE? A food allergy is an immune response to a food, generally either immediately or within a few hours of being exposed to the food either from eating it, touching it or in severe cases even just being close to the food (known as an airborne allergy). An allergic response can range from mild symptoms such as itchiness, a rash and or swelling, or can quickly escalate to a life threatening anaphylactic response which is characterised by swelling of the tongue and throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing and a loss of consciousness requiring urgent medical attention.

Food intolerances are often confused with allergies, as the symptoms can be similar, but these are not caused by an immune response and are not life threatening. Food intolerances can still cause debilitating symptoms such as digestive upsets, bloating, headaches and migraines, hives, wheezing and coughing. Food intolerances can also be a potential trigger in children for behavioural issues such as excessive meltdowns and disrupted sleep. A food intolerance is often a result of the body either not having the ability or enzymes required to break down components in foods, or a sensitivity to the chemicals found in foods.

Food intolerances are often harder to diagnose than allergies and traditionally have been identified after following an elimination diet where suspected foods are completely removed for a period of time and then reintroduced to see if there is a reaction. A nutritionist or naturopath can offer other forms of testing to help identify food sensitivities without a restrictive elimination diet.

MY CHILD HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ALLERGY OR INTOLERANCE… WHAT NOW? A good nutritionist or naturopath will work with you to ensure your child’s diet is balanced and their nutritional needs are being met. If, for instance, dairy has been eliminated from your child’s diet, it is important to ensure that calcium is sourced from other foods to avoid any long-term nutritional deficiencies. Above all, it’s important to stay relaxed around food and mealtimes and try to keep the focus on what foods your child is able to enjoy. Establishing a positive relationship around food is essential, after all food is one of the joys of life.
