an you think back and remember what it felt like to be a child? Some days it feels like yesterday. I remember being certain I could fly (yup, I had a vivid imagination!). Not high in the sky, that would be silly! But I have fond memories of floating and gliding down the corridors of my primary school whenever I had the chance. Looking back, I must have taken ages on my bathroom breaks! Conversely, after an exhausting bout of parenting my childhood feels like a world away and I feel wearier than my washing machine. Yet one thing I consistently remember from my younger years is feeling frustrated at not being heard, and I vowed that if I ever became a parent, I would try to ensure my kids always felt their opinion was recognised and validated (absolutely sweetheart, a Spiderman costume can always be paired with fairy wings and gumboots). So, I’m putting my promise to the test this issue and handing my
magazine over to the region’s kids! After all, this magazine is about the kids, so why not give them a voice and let them have a chance to say what they are really thinking? Our amazing guest editor, Amy from Matthew Flinders, has been hard at work attending photoshoots, proofing, writing columns and surviving the chaos of a print deadline. Whilst students across the region have been interviewing locals and putting on their journo heads to fill our pages with their favourite places to go, their favourite books, what they wish their parents knew, and what they feel the future holds for them. It’s been eye-opening, challenging and a bundle of fun! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as the kids did compiling it! With love and sunshine,
GUEST EDITOR
W
riting has been a key part of my life from the moment I could read. If it were up to me, I’d fill every day with words – reading, listening and creating to my heart’s content. In my time as a student, I have been thankful to explore a variety of styles, contexts and genres. Getting involved as a guest editor gave me the opportunity to witness the world of magazines – and I was amazed by what I saw! From cover design to proofreading pages, behind every aspect of the final product is a mountain of hard work.

Did you know... 30% of children have some type of eye condition that affects vision?
In most cases if the eye condition is detected early enough, exercises can be given to avoid it developing into a vision problem at school. In some cases vision problems exhibit themselves in children who have short attention spans but often are undetected by the parents or carers. At Looking Smart Optometrists we recommend a vision test for every child who is 6 months of age or older. We bulk bill all eye tests so it costs you nothing to have it done, and you can feel secure that you are looking after your child’s eyesight.

lay-based learning is now the cornerstone of curriculum at Petit Early Learning Caloundra, following studies that have found the positive impacts of play-based learning on development and literacy. “Children learn best when mentally active, engaged and able to make meaningful connections to their lives,” explains Denell, Centre Educational Leader at Petit Caloundra. Denell explains play-based learning programs at Petit Caloundra include a balance of child-led and teacher-initiated experiences. “Our educators support children’s agency in the program while being there to support and scaffold their interests when required through the addition of resources, play space and intentional teaching strategies.” The thoughtful planning of materials engages a child’s curiosity and sparks spontaneous play and interactions as well as playful experiences that encourage learning. A critical role for educators is to create a safe and creative learning environment for children. “At Petit Early Learning Journey, we value the child’s interests and encourage a holistic approach to child-led play by supporting and valuing their choice, instead of instructing them in what to do.” Find out more at petitjourney.com.au

MAKE READING YOUR
Superpower What if there was a superpower available to all kids that guarantees them a better start in life?
E
very kid dreams of being a superhero (and many adults too!). Defeating baddies, saving the world, and all of it done in a darn snazzy outfit. And no superhero is complete without a superpower: some can fly; some are part animal; some have super-human strength. Of course, in the real world, none of this is possible. But there is one thing that can give kids the power for a better start in life… it’s the simple art of reading. Reading can be a source of frustration in many households. School readers are boring, jumbled letters don’t seem to make sense, and this can lead to kids rejecting reading from an early age. Once the stubbornness kicks in, sparking a love for reading seems almost impossible. But what if we can turn that around so kids see reading as their own special superpower?

ENCOURAGING RELUCTANT READERS • Have books around the house • Set an example and read for fun as a parent • Make reading fun again by finding silly books or reading comics • Do an activity together that has instructions such as building LEGO or baking • Head outdoors – read signs, billboards, menus • Grab a map and guide book and go on a bushwalk or take a drive • Use technology such as apps or e-books, and analyse digital information together
THE ULTIMATE SUPERPOWER Reading is about so much more than picking up a book. Early literacy is critical across all areas of development and is carried through to adult life. Strong early literacy skills lead to higher grades in every subject throughout the school years. Early reading imparts a better attention span and concentration, and proficient literacy enables children to comprehend more of what they are reading. Kids become better researchers, able to extract the necessary information from books, websites and magazines. And being able to recognise a larger number of words by sight provides kids with a greater general knowledge base, enabling them to understand more and learn more about their environment. As well as the education gains, a love for reading brings many psychological and social benefits too. Reading for fun can improve a sense of connectedness and empathy with the community. It also provides a deeper understanding of personal identity, allowing a child to grow in self-confidence, maturity and independence. Non-fiction ignites a child’s curiosity about places and people, and satisfies curiosity when looking for answers on how the world works, whilst fiction sparks creativity, imagination and

Therefore, the early years are critical in embedding early literacy skills. To assist families in this, the Queensland State Government has launched a universal family literacy program called First 5 Forever. Designed to support families in providing stronger language and literacy environments for young children ages 0–5 years, the program provides a huge range of free resources including Rhymetime and Storytime sessions, and advice on how to bring early literacy into everyday life. “Children learn best from their primary caregiver,” Karen explains, “and it doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Singing, playing and chatting exposes a child to a wealth of early literacy and vocabulary.”
DEFEAT THE SERIOUS BADDIE
Traditionally, reading has had rather a serious reputation. But if it’s going to be promoted to a superpower status, it’s got to get a little ‘pow’ and ‘bam’ happening. “Treat reading as an adventure, where together you explore new worlds,” Karen says. “It should always be fun and never a chore… something kids are excited to do.” “Babies and pre-schoolers love nothing more than sitting down with Mum or Dad and enjoying a story, it’s about keeping that engagement and enthusiasm going as they problem-solving skills. grow older.” In a digital age, the skills that come from And Karen believes that happens best by reading are becomingly increasingly essential giving the power of choice. for success in later life. “Kids are most enthusiastic when they “We are now in a knowledge-based have the power to choose what they read,” economy where data and analysis make up she says. “Whether silly stories about farts, a large part of future employment,” Karen or non-fiction about spiders, so long as Gawen Young People’s Services Supervisor young kids are reading and enjoying it, that’s from Sunshine Coast Council explains. what matters.” “Yet, today, 46 per cent of adult Australians Giving kids the space to choose also allows cannot function effectively in them to explore different this information-driven world genres without feeling they are “Kids are most due to poor literacy.” taught or directed. “The enthusiastic when being In a recent study Australia library today is a treasure trove they have the ranked 21st against 45 of fun reading material – with developed countries in magazines, comics, branded power to choose international Grade 4 reading, fiction and more,” Karen says. what they read” so it’s a worrying trend that “And because it is all free, you needs to turn. can borrow whatever you like; test out new things, push the boundaries and explore.” SUPERPOWERS START EARLY “It’s also important that every child gets Though most children start to formally read their own library card, rather than borrow on at school, research has found that the a parent’s card,” Karen continues. “This not groundwork to make that possible happens only keeps a record of everything each child in the first five years. has read, it also adds to the autonomy; “Up to 90 per cent of a child’s brain giving them the power to choose, borrow development happens in the first five years, and return independently.” and a child’s success at age 10 can be linked And having that choice ultimately gives to the amount of talk they hear from birth to them control over what shape their own age 3,” says Karen. superpower will take.

Insider tips for becoming a
READING SUPERHERO
Being a superhero is hard work but becoming a READING SUPERHERO is only for the super brave!
W
ant to become a reading superhero? We chat to Tina Clothier, top-level Reading Superhero teacher from Ready for Reading to find out the key steps to becoming a Reading Superhero.
1. Gather a very large vocabulary and put it in your superhero toolbelt. This should begin when you are a mini superhero. It involves intensive training in the art of
speaking and listening. You should talk to everyone, all day. Ask lots of questions and listen to the answers; visit lots of places and talk about what you see; read books; sing songs; listen to music; play word games. Take good care of this tool and add to it continuously. 2. Your first super power, Phonemic Awareness is very difficult to learn, so listen carefully and practise, practise, practise. Learn to hear and identify
all the individual sounds in a word; e.g. the word cat is made up of the sounds /c/, /a/, /t/ (sounds, not letter names). Then you must learn to play with the sounds; say the word cat, then say the word cat without the letter ‘c’ and you have at. Add the letter ‘p’ to the beginning of at and you have pat. What happens if you add the letter ‘s’ to the front of pat? You have the word spat. Be proud of this superpower and look after it well. 3. Phonics is your next superpower. This begins when you enter The School for Reading Superheroes. You will learn, through extremely difficult lessons, the alphabet and many ways of spelling sounds. Did you know the English language has 26 letters, but 44 sounds and over 500 different ways of spelling those sounds? Wow! It’s not for the faint hearted so put on your superhero thinking caps and try, try, try. 4. While you are mastering the art of phonics you will begin learning how to use the Magic Sightword Glasses. They allow you to read and understand lots of single words in an instant and make you a superfast reader. The training is arduous and fraught with danger but there is nothing better than adding your very own Magic Sightword Glasses to your superhero toolbelt. 5. Almost there. Only two more superpowers to go. Fluency is the power to use your Magic Sightword Glasses for reading all the words in sentences quickly and with expression; just like how you sound when you are speaking. This takes lots of practise, so you must read every day. 6. Last superpower. Comprehension is the power to understand everything you read with your Magic Sightword Glasses. The reason we read is to understand and learn new things so keep on reading, reading, reading. Congratulations! You are now a READING SUPERHERO!

WHAT I WISH PARENTS KNEW By Elijah, age 6, Immanuel Lutheran College
I
wish all dads knew not to play pretend golf inside with wrapping paper because this could be dangerous. They should also know not to eat chocolate ice cream all the time like my Dad does. I wish mums would stop gardening all the time because I think my Mum should have a rest. My favourite thing about parents is they always join in with what you’re playing. I wish parents knew more mathematics so they could teach it to me. Parents should also know about technology,
geography, history and the solar system. Also, parents should know things that stand for tricky things. Like OBCOBE stands for Order of the Best Cook of the British Empire. I like parents because they are great cooks. I wish parents knew I want roast for dinner every night. Parents can also be very nice in different ways, like how kind they are to you when you’ve fallen over. Both of my parents are very kind. I love parents because they are always by your side.

Book Creator is very easy to use and awesome and good too. I love it and you can email your work to your teacher or anyone. You can even get Siri to read your work. You write your digital note books and you can air drop as well as email. And the highest number of pages is 9,999. PROS: You can share your work with others, and good for a school environment. It is very easy to use. You can have different backgrounds. And you can add photos and voices. It is also kid friendly and you can get the background like any comic. CONS: You cannot make your own background. It takes about four seconds to turn the page. RATING: We give it 4 out of 5 K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
Pic Collage is an app you use for editing photos. You can make your own in freestyle and visit what you’ve already made. You can download it on iPad, computer or phone. I think Pic Collage is a great app to use for editing photos, using different text and using awesome stickers. PROS: It has a vast amount to explore. It also has great use if you want to work on a project that has specific things, like mixing photos. CONS: It doesn’t let you put in more than one background. Sometimes, if you tap a picture that has words or other pictures on it, it will move the ones on top. RATING: 4 out of 5. It is very helpful, but if you want to make a picture with lots of background, then you may like to use other apps. M AY / J U N E 2019

weekend in Noosa
A KID-TASTIC
With amazing beaches and loads of fun things to do, Noosa is one of our favourite places to go. But when was the last time you went? BY CALLUM, AGED 10 (AND MUM)
T
hough it’s so close to home, we don’t go to Noosa nearly enough – for some reason we always seem to end up at Bunnings instead. So, we’ve sketched up our ideal weekend in Noosa, filled with free and kid-friendly stuff to do, to hopefully inspire Mum and Dad to take us back there again soon!
FRIDAY We’d probably arrive in quite late in the afternoon, so first stop has to be… the beach! Noosa Main Beach is one of the most child-friendly, parent-friendly beaches we’ve been to, and the perfect spot to cool off after a busy week at school. Protected by the headland, the waves are usually calm making it ideal for little kids, even my little sister will go in! There’s some great waves to catch if you have a boogie board or you surf, and Hastings Street is directly opposite if Mum and Dad want to grab coffee, snacks or ice-cream (try Happy Pops Gelato – they are super-yummy).

SATURDAY MORNING CLIMB A MOUNTAIN
There are several mountains to choose from, depending on how far you want to walk. 1. Mount Tinbeerwah: Only 15 minutes from Noosa Heads, this is the easiest walk ever (1km round trip) and has great views from the top. The first part of the walking track is paved so even prams can go if you have a baby brother or sister. 2. Mount Ninderry: This trail is a bit longer (about 3kms round trip) but is nicely shaded and not too tricky – my little sister did it with a few breaks along the way (she is only six). It has two lookouts – do one or do both! 3. Mount Coolum: Though it’s only about 2kms round trip this is a trickier climb (Dad had to carry my little sister at the top part). It’s a super-popular walk, lots of adults even run up and down, so if you are slow it’s best done in the quieter times. Don’t forget your insect repellent here too, the mozzies can be brutal. FUN ON THE NOOSA RIVER
Explore the waterways of Noosa Everglades
After a busy morning exploring, head over to Noosa River for the afternoon where you can play in the river or try some of the water sports there. At the jetty at Gympie Terrace you can hire a kayak or jet ski, or have a go at stand-up paddle-boarding. There are boat cruises available along the river if Mum and Dad fancy doing something relaxing. Or if they are feeling more adventurous, join a kayak tour through the Noosa Everglades. There is also a great park – The Pirate Park – next to the jetty, with play equipment, space to run around and barbecues.

PEREGIAN BEACH MARKETS
Now, we don’t usually like markets, Mum and Dad take ages to go around, and there’s not always heaps to do for kids. But the Peregian Markets are great! It’s quite small and not super-busy, so it’s good for families. They usually have live music and often have kids’ activities set up in the park. Mum loves the locally-made art and produce, and it’s a really relaxed atmosphere. Make sure you get a donut from the Jam Factory – they are amazing! And stop for a play at the park afterwards – gives Mum and Dad a chance to grab a coffee from the markets or one of the many cafes in Peregian Village.

Noosa National Park Headland
We’d be happy chilling then heading back to the beach. But Mum and Dad are usually eager for us to be doing something ‘interesting’. If they are insistent, then heading into Noosa National Park is a great compromise. Mum reckons it is some of the region’s most picturesque coastline, so make sure you fill up her phone with plenty of snaps! There’s an easy walk around the headland and there’s plenty of places to stop off along the way – wear your togs and have a swim at Tea Tree Bay Beach, or explore the rocks at Little Cove. Older kids might want to make the scramble down to the Fairy Pools, but it’s too tricky for my little sister. Watch out for koalas munching leaves in the trees above the footpath too… they are super-chilled! K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

WILD SIDE
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work as a zoo keeper? Well get ready for a day on the wild side at Australia Zoo this school holidays and become a Zookeeper for a Day!
A
ustralia Zoo believes in ‘Conservation through Exciting Education’ and what could be more exciting for a budding zookeeper than spending a day meeting some of the amazing animals and finding out first-hand what it is like to work in a zoo? By the end of the program, the zoo’s passion for wildlife and conservation will inspire every budding zookeeper to do what they can to help protect the environment. Because many of the Zookeepers for a Day come back time and again, the school holiday programs include some different activities every time. Here’s an idea of what to expect: KHAKI DISCOVERY! Young animal lovers aged 6–10 years old have the chance to experience what it takes K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
to care for animals in a zoo. This could include working alongside the experienced keeping staff to prepare or feed out some delicious food, clean animal habitats or provide some exciting enrichment for the animals to interact with. All that hard work will be rewarded with a chance to get up close with some amazing wildlife! The Zookeepers-in-training learn about the fascinating features different animals have and find out why animals are so important for the environment. DID YOU KNOW?? A wombat has an average top speed of 40km/h and could outrun Usain Bolt over 100 metres! KHAKI EXTREME! For older wildlife enthusiasts, aged 11–15
years old, Australia Zoo offers the chance to gain an understanding and appreciation of what’s involved in working in one of the world’s most renowned zoological and conservation facilities. The Zookeepers-in-training can also look forward to meeting some of the Ambassador species, learning about the challenges facing animals in the wild and finding out how they can make a difference. During the day they may visit the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, quiz the Wildlife Warriors or be inspired by the passionate keepers. “My daughter is a pretty quiet personality, but she was BEAMING with excitement when we picked her up and didn’t stop talking about DJ the Rhino and cleaning the snakes’ enclosure and watching them feed (she loves reptiles).” M AY / J U N E 2019

Be a Zookeeper for a Day and get up close with the animals at Australia Zoo. KHAKI EXPLORER! For the youngest zookeepers, Australia Zoo also offers the Khaki Explorer program for ages 4–6 years old. With a parent or carer along for the experience, the littlest explorers will have the chance to meet some of the Zoo favourites and chat to real life zookeepers about what they do every day. DID YOU KNOW?? An Echidna’s tongue can be up to 18cm long! AND MORE... If your zookeeper has energy to spare at the end of the program, they can continue the adventure and re-enter the Zoo until it closes! And as if the animals weren’t enough, they can wrap up their day by burning off some energy on the new jumping pillow, cooling off at the water park and refuelling at the Lolly Shop and Ice Creamery. “They taught me things I didn’t know! I love that the girls can have a great day out on the holidays but still take some education out of the day. Great job by all involved, including behind the scenes. I will definitely be recommending the day to all my friends. From one very happy mum!” Zookeeper for a Day programs often sell out, so book in advance on the Australia Zoo website (australiazoo.com.au) or call 07 5436 2000 for more information. Kids don’t have to have all the fun! Custom Zookeeper for a Day programs can be booked throughout the year (excluding Queensland school holidays). W Beneath the ings AT QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM
BY ISLA (AGE 6, SUNSHINE BEACH STATE SCHOOL) AND MUM
RESTORING AND EXHIBITING PLANES IS A DREAM JOB FOR MANY KIDS. WE CHAT GEOFF SMITH FROM QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE MUSEUM AND THE AMAZING PLANES THEY HAVE. WHEN DID YOUR LOVE FOR PLANES BEGIN? As a child, we lived on a dairy farm. All the kids had model gliders and we used to fly them from the hill-tops, then ride our bikes to fetch them. We were always making repairs to the wings when they crashed into trees and fences, so my interest in aircraft began at that time. WHAT INTERESTING PL ANES DO YO U H AV E AT Q A M? QAM has many unique displays. Our DC-3 is a story on its own, being the first DC-3 in Australia and having flown from Amsterdam to Batavia (now Jakarta) under KLM colours. This was a five-day flight with overnight stops and passengers staying in hotels! It was then used by the RAAF and USAF during WW2. IT also flew General Douglas Macarthur from Melbourne to Canberra for a meeting with the Prime Minister in 1942. We also have the
48

only Beechcraft Starship outside of the USA and quite a few other ‘firsts’. HOW DO YOU RESTORE THE PLANES? Aircraft acquired by QAM generally require a great deal of restoration work before they are ready for display. We have teams of volunteers, about 60 of them in total, completing restoration works. Many of them have aviation backgrounds, but others just learn on the job. It is a big challenge to seek replacement parts for aircraft that may have been out of service for 40 years or more, and, if the parts can’t be found, they are made in the QAM workshops. There are several large, well-equipped workshops to support the restoration process. WHERE DO THE BROKEN PLANES COME FROM? Many aircraft come via the RAAF Heritage
programs. Others come from other museums or private collections, aviation companies etc. Some are donated, some are purchased. We have an acquisitions team who have a wish-list of aircraft they are seeking and they utilise many connections built up over several decades to track down the aircraft they seek. W H I C H I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PLANE, AND WHY? Rather than favourite planes, I have favourite stories. The Avro Anson is one; purchased new by a grazier from Cobar in NSW in 1952, he was flying dressed in a Santa suit trying to drop presents to local children on the football field. His first pass was too fast, too high; the second pass was too low, too slow, and he crashed into a tree. The story goes then locals rushed over and someone called for the Police to attend. The pilot pulled back his Santa hat, and said, K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
LOCAL LIFE
“Don’t bother, they are in the back of the W H A T D O K I D S L O V E M O S T plane.” None of the passengers were injured ABOUT A VISIT TO QAM? and the children got their presents. I believe what kids of all ages love is the large range of aircraft in such a compact space. W H AT A C T I V I T I E S D O YO U H AV E This begins from when you enter Hangar # 1 FOR KIDS AT QAM? and see the massive F-111 and all the other Children usually love all of displays. Hangar # 2 is QAM’s displays simply basically a because they can get up very smorgasbord of aircraft close to them. But we have from all eras, both just finished refurbishing military and “What kids of all our ‘Kids Corner’ in a commercial, large and ages love is the passenger aircraft theme small. Our volunteer large range of with two TV screens, staff go out of their aircraft in such aircraft seating and an way to make children a compact space.” interactive play-table, which feel welcome and I am sure lots of children special, and that they will enjoy. There is also enjoy their day! ‘Herbie’ the helicopter and children who participate are Queensland Air issued with an achievement certificate. Museum is at We have a very well stocked shop with 7 Pathfinder Drive, Caloundra. The museum is aviation models, model kits and souvenirs, open daily (except Christmas Day) from 10am ice-creams and drinks are available too! to 4pm. More information at qam.com.au

WONDER
By R. J. Palacio. Ages 9+
Review by Gabrielle, Unity College “You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.” This is the basis of the book Wonder by R.J Palacio. The message is to choose kind and always be yourself, just like the protagonist August Pullman. Auggie is a 10-year-old boy born with facial deformities called Treacher Collins Syndrome. This condition makes his life extremely challenging. I personally found this book very inspiring and uplifting, because it made me realise that I am perfect just the way I am. Although, most of all I loved the unexpected humour of the book. Overall, I believe this novel is a great read for adolescents to enjoy.

This free app lets you use your creativity to make your own retro looking, entertaining video games. Although this game is a bit glitchy when offline, it is fun for everyone. If you have the scannable Bloxels Gameboard, this game won’t involve too much screen time. You can create your own characters and game layouts to share with your friends and play each other’s games. There are millions of possibilities with Bloxels, so get creative!
DREAM LEAGUE SOCCER 2019 Ages 4+
Review by Freddie, Unity College
This app is a soccer simulation for all ages. It is a fun game where you can play games of soccer with commentators that make it feel real. You can also make your own team and earn coins to buy players to add to your team, each player has a rating and the better your team is the higher the leagues you can play in. You can create custom players and have real tables and stats of your players. The cool thing about this game is that you have complete control of every player in your team.
MEDORAN CHRONICLES
By local author Lynette Noni. Ages 12+
Review by Freddie, Unity College This amazing series is about a 16-year-old girl named Alex. Alex finds herself in a mysterious world called Medora, where she meets two boys called Bear and Jordan. The trio become good friends and Alex stays at their school for kids with magical gifts. Alex makes another friend, DC, who is really the princess of their world. Not all is good in Medora as Alex fights to save her friends from the rebel prince Aven who wants all mortals to suffer. So, Alex and her friends set out to save this world. It is an incredible book for readers ages 10 and over. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop! M AY / J U N E 2019

WELLBEING
connect and shine. No bullying, no judging or overthinking allowed! We cover a different topic each month – topics range from selfconfidence, gratitude, self-love and respect, nutrition and exercise, just to name a few!
WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN GIRLS WHO HAVE ATTENDED YOUR WORKSHOPS? Girls often arrive nervous and anxious – because they don’t know what to expect, or they struggle with connections and friendships. But by the end of the workshop they bounce out of the doors with the biggest smile on their faces! Parents often can’t believe the shift in the child! We have quite a few girls who come every month because they just love the positive space, the tools they learn and the friends they make. We have had such beautiful feedback from parents thanking us for making such a wonderful positive change in their daughter’s life.
WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR GIRLS TO LEARN THESE STRATEGIES AT THIS AGE?
EMPOWERING GIRLS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Navigating friendships and finding your tribe is not always easy. We chat to sisters Suzanne McFadden and Joanne Dawe, founders of Grateful for Me workshops, about friendship strategies for tweens and teens. WHY DID YOU START THE GRATEFUL FOR ME WORKSHOPS? There were many reasons we started the workshops! There is so much pressure on girls today: to perform well at school, get good grades, do well in sport and now there is social media on top of that too! We wanted to create a space for young girls where they can go to truly be themselves – away from the pressures of school and home. It’s a space where together we can help, guide and support all girls to be the very best versions of themselves. I [Suzanne] am a qualified child care educator and qualified in community serviceswelfare, and Jo is a qualified youth mentor.
And we are both mums now too! But once upon a time (and not too long ago!) we were also both young girls. So, we understand and fully empathise with the emotions that young girls experience through these stages of life.
Ages 5–7 and 8–12 are both stages in a girl’s life where they can be quite fragile, and things can impact them greatly. It can be quite confusing and noisy for them. It’s a time when they all need a confidence boost, especially around friendships and being themselves. Our workshops help and guide the girls to understand who they are and to truly shine and blossom into the best versions of themselves. Rather than focus on bullying, we feel it’s more important to empower girls to be better friends, because the more young girls out there that can see that they are unique, awesome and beautiful just the way they are, the better!
WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR WORKSHOPS?
WHAT IS THE MAIN THING THAT ALL GIRLS TAKE HOME FROM THE WORKSHOPS?
The monthly workshops are split into two age groups: Tweenies (5–7 years) and Tweens (8–12 years). The soul-filled, empowering workshops give these girls the tools to be the best version of themselves and to truly flourish in who they are. It’s a place for them to be themselves with other likeminded girls; a light-hearted space for girls to
Community and connection. It’s always incredible to see the girls all guiding and helping one another in our circle discussions. They see that they are not alone in feeling the way they do, and this helps them feel less lonely and more at ease to know it’s not just them who is having these struggles and that all will be OK.
