Summer
SUNSHINE COAST - BRISBANE - GOLD COAST
Y
ay… summer is just around the corner! After the shemozzle of this year, time rolls on and the silly season is already upon us. Sadly, Christmas may look a little different this year—with Santa on Zoom, socially distanced festivities and much smaller gatherings. But that’s no reason to lose the magic of Christmas. In fact, I’m taking it as the perfect excuse for excessive sparkles and over-the-top Christmas lights for KOTC HQ this year! (Make sure you follow our social pages for plenty of socially-distanced silliness over the next two months!) One thing that will never change about a Queensland summer is our love for the water. And living such an aquatic lifestyle, water safety and learning swimming skills is top of the priority list for our kids. Therefore, this issue we’ve called in the experts from Rackley Swimming to find out about the essentials of getting back
into the pool and preparing for a watersafe summer, particularly after the long hiatus of lockdown. And let’s not forget Christmas! We have a huge Christmas Gift Guide with gorgeous locally made products, games, books and more for the whole family. Plus, we have a round up of summer activities for families—both online and IRL (in real life). Need a break? With Queensland families staying local for the summer (why would we go anywhere else?!), we explore the serenity of the region’s best farmstays and how these secret escapes are providing the perfect respite from city life for families. Wishing you a fabulous Christmas, and I’ll see you in 2021!

AUSTRALIA ZOO
WELCOMES TWO GIRAFFE CALVES
A
ustralia Zoo has welcomed two adorable new members of giraffe herd. Both boys, one named Tallbert and another named Hunter. When born, the calves were just under 2 metres in height, and weigh approximately 50kg. After around 30 minutes, the newborn calves were attempting to stand, which is always a challenge, but is essential for avoiding predators in the wild. The two new calves take Australia Zoo’s total to thirteen, an impressive achievement for a species doing it tough in the wild. “Giraffe are vulnerable to
extinction, with populations rapidly declining and widespread across the African continent,” said Giraffe Keeper, Kat Hansen. Tallbert and his mother, Rosie, have started exploring the African Savannah enclosure with the rest of the giraffe herd, including father, Forest, who was recently named the World’s Tallest Living Giraffe by Guinness World Records. The savannah is the only enclosure of its kind in Queensland, and is also home to a breeding population of white rhinoceros, zebras, cheetah and meerkats.

ver the past three years, Cottontail Nappy Service has been hard at work successfully preventing over 300,000 disposable nappies from going into landfill by replacing them with cloth nappies. “We started with homes and thought, why stop there? We need to get our childcare centres onto this!” said Ashley Costello, co-owner of Cottontail Nappy Service. Cloth nappies are not what they used to be. Newly improved Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) make changing babies just as easy and efficient as with a disposable. “There are so many reasons for a centre to cloth,” said Ashley. “Along with reducing your carbon footprint and landfill output (making your centre more environmentally appealing), cloth nappies are also deemed to be better for our babies. With no harsh chemicals or plastics, they are much softer on the skin which can prevent common issues such as nappy rash. There is also a lot of claims that clothing your baby makes the transition to potty training much easier. This is definitely something we know toddler carers would appreciate!” Cottontail offers personalised bespoke prints for their MCNs. “Each centre has their own uniquely designed nappies, designed to capture each childcare centre’s individuality,” said Ashley. “We are a very affordable choice to a centre’s disposable nappies. We have a free promotional Childcare Package Bag available to all centres this month, contact us for your bag!” www.cottontailservice.com.au K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . Christmas traditions
FROM AROUND THE WORLD While some people may consider stuffing a turkey a little odd, that has nothing on some of these strange Christmas traditions from around the world! PORTUGAL On Christmas Day, the main feast, or consoda, is held in households in Portugal. Families often set places for relatives who have passed away. Some also leave crumbs out for these departed souls, as it is believed to bring good luck.

US In the US, thousands of people all over the country take part in pub crawls dressed as Santa, all in the name of charity.
NORWAY
SOUTH AFRICA
In Norway, it is believed that evil spirits arrive on Christmas Eve. Residents hide their brooms as they fear the evil spirits will use them to attack people – a great excuse for no housework!
Children beware – don’t eat Santa’s cookies on Christmas Eve! In South Africa, legend has it that a boy called Danny dared to eat the plate of cookies made by his Grandma for Santa. In a fit of rage, she killed him. His spirit is now said to haunt South Africa around Christmas time, keeping an eye on children and making sure they are good.
CATALONIA In Catalonia, the Tio de Nadal is found in many homes at Christmas time. It is a hollow log with legs and a face painted on one end. Beginning on December 8, the log is given something to “eat” every night, where treats are placed inside the log. On Christmas Eve, the log is ordered to “poo” and beaten with sticks, revealing the gifts inside that are then shared by everyone. The log is commonly called the caga tio (or “poo log”).
GERMANY On December 5, children in Germany place a boot or shoe outside their bedroom door instead of stocking in the hope that they have been good enough to receive some treats from St Nicholas. If they have been good, they receive a tree branch covered

VENEZUELA In Caracas, it is a tradition for the whole city to roller skate to church for Christmas morning mass, with roads closed to cars.
UKRAINE If you haven’t yet put your tree up, how about considering this theme for your decorations this year? In Ukraine, many trees are adorned with spider web decorations amid the tinsel instead of the more customary baubles. The Legend of the Christmas Spider is behind this tradition. The legend goes that there was a poor widow who couldn’t afford to decorate her Christmas tree. When she awoke Christmas morning, she found that a spider has spun its web (tinsel) around the tree.

LEARN TO SWIM: AS VITAL AS ABC
Wondering whether you really need to put your child through swimming lessons? We chat to Cameron Speechley, Rackley Swimming’s General Manager, to find out why learning to swim is such a critical part of childhood. WHY ARE SWIMMING LESSONS SO IMPORTANT FOR QLD KIDS? Young or old, Aussies share a love for the water. Despite this, developing swimming skills is something we all need to work on from a young age. Swimming is about so much more than laps and solitary sessions. It is about social interaction, swim races, safety skills, leisure, pool parties, and even the odd bomb dive. And, yes, if you want to represent your school, club or country—a few intensive training sessions might be a good idea too! We believe swimming is a rite of passage for all Australians, and an activity anyone can do—even babies. That is why we offer

free Baby Splash lessons to help introduce our youngest family members to the water. WHAT AGE SHOULD KIDS START SWIMMING LESSONS, AND WHAT LEVEL SHOULD THEY CONTINUE TO? The process of learning to swim can start from a baby’s very first bath. The bath helps them to become accustomed to the feeling of water. We believe children should begin swimming lessons from two months old, teaching them water confidence which is the foundation to developing strong water safety skills. All kids learn at different rates and progress often depends on the exposure a
child has to various aquatic environments. Swim Australia recommends that children should be able to swim 400 metres continuously before ceasing swimming lessons. While we support Swim Australia’s recommendations, we also recommend a child should continue in swimming lessons until they can swim 1km, as this gives them the endurance they need to cope with a rip at the beach. Swimming is more than a pastime, it’s one of the few children’s activities that can save their life! WHY SHOULD KIDS CONTINUE LESSONS THROUGH WINTER? Year-round swimming is vital. lessons across the year helps children build confidence and improve upon their skill level. Children who stop swimming lessons during winter will often experience skill stagnation or ‘winter regression’ and their skills can take time to recover when they do return to the pool. Also, swimming lessons are an integral part of the weekly family routine. Children look forward to interacting with their classmates and teachers each week. We have seen many families excited and eager to return to the pool after our recent closures to get their children back to a sense of normalcy and routine. WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL WATER SAFET Y SKILLS THAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW AND BY WHAT AGE? As well as the mechanics of learning to swim, a large part of our program focuses on educating kids about water safety in and around the water. This includes teaching them to only go swimming with an adult and with their togs on. Parents have an active role to play too, ensuring they continue to teach water safety at home. This is followed up with basic reach and throw rescues and encouraging people to ‘Yell and Tell’, rather than jumping in the water to help someone. Water safety in Australia also needs to acknowledge the many aquatic environments we have (such as oceans, pools, creeks and dams). Developing water safety skills and knowing what to do in a dangerous situation in and around water is key to preventing drowning. The older your kids become, the more important this water safety messaging is. As they grow up, they start to head into more dangerous situations, so they need to know how to keep themselves safe. Rackley Swimming’s Water Safety Week

highlights vital water safety messages and strategies for swimmers and their families, with a different safety focus for each week throughout the year. Whilst all our lessons aim to focus on the basics of water safety, our Water Safety Weeks highlight these skills and how they can be applied in real-life scenarios including: • Survival strokes • Treading water • Safe entry and exit from the water • Techniques for clothed swimming survival • Use of devices to assist rescue • Basic swimming skills. WHAT ARE YOUR KEY WATER SAFET Y TIPS FOR PARENTS? For parents, supervision is the most essential part of water safety. If a young child is in the pool, then you must be in the pool with them. Even once children are

older, they should still always be actively supervised when in the water. When there is a group of children or pool party, one of the smartest ways to supervise children is to have a designated supervisor whose single role is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children in the water.
WHAT MAKES A SWIM SCHOOL GREAT? The teachers! At Rackley Swimming, our teachers are heavily invested in our 5 Steps to Success teaching principles: Support, Trust, Energy, Patience and Success. The pool environment is also very important. We offer a warm, nurturing learn to swim experience in family-friendly, all-weather environments. Our 32°C heated and enclosed pools allow the littlest of swimmers to enjoy the benefits of year-round swimming.

SWIM INTENSIVES
Does your child need a boost in the pool? Summer swim intensives could be the answer. We chat to Joanne Efendi, Aquatic Supervisor at Goodlife Swim School, to find out more. Why do swim intensives work for rapidly building swim skills? Swimming intensives are a great booster for swim skills as they are essentially half a term of swimming in one week. It ‘fast tracks’ their skills ; it is a well-researched fact that a short burst of intensive learning accelerates motor skill development.
lesson to warm up to where they were the previous week. At Goodlife, like our weekly lessons, our intensives are taught by the same teacher to ensure familiarity and to build trust between the teacher and student. This also enables the teacher to get to know each child and be able to deliver our program based on individual children’s needs.
When children swim daily intensives for a week, their teacher will pick up the lesson from the day before. Skill retention is greater and, therefore, teachers can teach new skills earlier, rather than having to wait a week between lessons. Each week, students may take a good portion of their
Every child is different in how they develop and retain their skills. But if a child is on the cusp of graduating to a new level, intensives will help them to perfect their skills. The same goes for a child that has had a term out of the water. An intensive week of repetition on skills development will usually see a return of

their skills from where they left off previously.
What recommendations do you have for returning to lessons after a long break? I would definitely advise considering enrolling children into intensives after a long duration out of the water. There is no land-based activity that can substitute for swimming lessons. Even if skills have not suffered, their ‘swim fitness’ will have surely dropped. Swimming is an entire body workout, impacting on the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems. It tones muscles, builds strength and is known to help children that suffer from asthma by building lung capacity and learning to control breathing. www.goodlife.org.au/swim-school

SUMMER
HERE ARE 5 TOP REASONS TO ENROL YOUR CHILD IN SWIMMING LESSONS 1. SWIMMING LESSONS SAVE LIVES A young child who learns to swim develops crucial lifelong water awareness and swimming abilities; however, adult supervision is required at all times when a child is in the water. All school-aged children in Australia have the opportunity to learn to swim in Primary School. Enrolling your child in a swimming program at an earlier age or taking them to extra-curricular swimming lessons will reinforce the water skills learned at school and improve their general level of confidence in the water.
2. SWIMMING IMPROVES FITNESS Swimming is a low-impact form of exercise that provides a great alternative to sedentary activities like watching TV and playing computer games. It's also a surefire way to tire the kids out, as swimming provides a workout for the whole body. In particular, it improves coordination, balance and flexibility. The fun of playing around in the water encourages children to exercise without even knowing it!
will feel more comfortable splashing around and learn to enjoy themselves in the water. Swimming can also be a great social activity.
4. A SKILL FOR LIFE Once the skill is learned, your child will always know how to swim, regardless of their fitness level. This is especially useful when taking part in other recreational water activities such as kayaking, surfing, diving, or even sailing.
3. INCREASES CONFIDENCE IN THE WATER AND ON LAND
5. IT'S FUN!
Not only is swimming great for the body, it's also great for the mind. It can improve mood and self-esteem. Learning to swim early on will also reduce a child's fear of water, making pools and beaches less stressful environments. As they develop confidence in their swimming ability, they
It's a fantastic and versatile activity that can be done all year round, indoors and outdoors, alone or in a team, at a beach or in a pool, as a competitive sport or as a recreational activity with friends and family.

FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
A
s another school year draws to a close—albeit a very different year due to COVID-19—parents may be wondering what the best ways are to prepare their children for the new school year. 2021 is a new year—a blank canvas full of endless opportunities and experiences. Whether your child is starting school for the first time or entering their final year of primary school here are some tips to get the 2021 school year off to a wonderful start. 1. TA L K P O S I T I V E LY Remind your child that a new school year is coming and it will be full of new experiences and new opportunities. Try to avoid allowing them to engage in negative talk about what has happened previously and help them focus on the excitement the adventure that awaits them. If your child is starting at a new school, perhaps there is an orientation morning or school visit they can attend to assist with the transition.
2. INCLUDE YOUR CHILD IN PREPARATIONS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR By allowing your child to choose new lunchboxes, water bottles and book coverings you are giving them some ownership over their school experience. Spend a special afternoon of one-on-one time with a family member, choosing their necessary school supplies. 3. ENCOURAGE A GROWTH MINDSET There is a lot of power in the word ‘yet’. If your child is expressing that they are unable to do something, encourage them to realise that they just can’t do that YET.
5 . H AV E G O O D R O U T I N E S I N P L AC E R E A DY TO S TA R T T H E Y E A R As the school start approaches, it is important to ensure that your child is in a good routine with sleeping patterns, eating breakfast and knowing what their week will look like, including extra-curricular activities. The most important consideration is to be present with your children. Let them know that you are there to support them and that, together, you will get through whatever challenges the 2021 school year presents.
4. A R R A N G E A P L AY D AT E W I T H FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL DURING T H E H O L I D AY S This can support social connectedness and allow your child to feel confident that they will have friends upon return to school.

Prep is about building self-belief; saying you can do it!
What is it that makes the Prep year so special?
The magic of P rep As the 2021 Preppies eagerly prepare for their new adventure, we chat to Tracey Down, Prep teacher at Sunshine Beach State School, to find out what makes Prep such a magical year. What is the main purpose of the Prep year? Prep is all about ensuring our students have a good grounding in learning readiness. This means developing their fine and gross motor skills, plus lots of conversation and asking questions to develop oral language skills. With those critical skills established, we then build on them now that they have the fine motor skills to create letter shapes and the oral language skills to participate in class. We also want them to be resilient and confident risk takers. Prep is about building self belief—instilling the self talk to say ‘you can do it’ and supporting them to keep trying.
The growth children experience during that first year is incredible. In the beginning, some can’t write their name; yet by the end of the year, they are able to read a book. Also, the Prep classroom is their first exposure to a more structured learning environment. The imagination they have and innocence they bring to the classroom is magical. The best part is the connections you make with the children as their Prep teacher, sharing in their excitement for all the new things they encounter each day.
What advice do you have for new Prep parents? It’s a magical year but it goes very fast! So, celebrate all the opportunities that schooling brings. Help them develop their fine and gross motor skills, let them enjoy being little, let them be outside and play and encourage them to use their imagination.
How has COVID affected the Prep year?
The biggest change during COVID has been that our Prep children are met at the gates What methods do you use to provide by a teacher or teachers aide, rather than Preppies with the best possible start parents walking them into the classroom. to their learning journey? WELLBEING
Christmas. A GOOD TIME TO RESET AND LOOK AFTER YOU.
L
et's be honest, 2020 has been quite a year. And as it comes to an end, it's important to reflect on how it affected your family and how it may continue to affect your family. We want to go into this time of the year proactively because we know if we reflect and think about what is going on, we can handle things better. Reflection is so important for us, as parents, but also for our children. It puts us in a space where we can answer the questions that they may have, understand why we seem to be frustrated, or why we are not as present as we wish we were. Importantly, it gives us space to look at proactively putting things in place, so we are what we need to be for our children. How is your family travelling as we enter this period? We know that there may be families still separated by border restrictions. Are you feeling disconnected from your family? It may be helpful to book in some extra time to connect with your family members in the lead up to Christmas. There have also been huge financial flow-on implications from COVID-19. Are you feeling this pressure? How is this flowing on to your little people? How do we have these conversations with our children?
One of the patterns we see at Parentline is a decrease in parents reaching out for help over school holiday periods. This is particularly evident during the summer/Christmas period. It makes sense on one hand as our children are home. This can be a challenge to prioritise yourself or to have potentially difficult conversations when they are within earshot. It is also a worry as this is a time when parents generally need more support, not less. If you are concerned about little ones listening, you can always go online to parentline.com.au and chat to a counsellor via WebChat. It is so important to prioritise yourself, even when it may not feel like the right time. Sometimes it may feel selfish but it is the least selfish thing you can do for your family. We know that children do better when parents feel supported. If you feel like you need help preparing for this period, if you feel exhausted or your capacity is low after the tough year that we've had, give us a call and let us help. Let us listen. Sometimes you may have a specific query about your child/family or you may just be feeling overwhelmed. It does not matter the reason, we can help you reset after such a hard year which will give you more capacity to support your kids.

LITERACY IN THE TIME OF
COVID
C
OVID has brought a multitude of changes to our kids’ worlds—not to mention the challenges, uncertainty and mental fatigue that it has brought to ours as parents! Yet, as we pick our way through the restrictions each day, our kids’ learning doesn’t stop. And thankfully there’s plenty of ways to nurture a child’s early literacy, whatever the new norm might look like.
THE FIRST FIVE YEARS
Did you know that 90 per cent of a child’s brain development happens in the first five precious years of life and that a baby’s brain forms around 700 new neural connections every second? Research has also found that a child’s success at age 10 can be linked to the amount of conversation they hear in the first three years of life. Therefore, the first five years of a child’s learning are crucial for establishing the foundations for life-long learning.
READING FOR LEISURE
After a tumultuous year, little ones are eager for the freedom and fun of summer. “This downtime is hugely important for children to recharge and reset,” said Karen Gawen, Young People’s Services Supervisor from Sunshine Coast Council. “But, how you use that time is critical; finding a good balance of recharging and engagement.” Essential to early literacy development, reading for leisure is a simple yet highly effective way of achieving that balance. “There’s no better way to recharge the batteries than to share a book with Mum and Dad, and kids

don’t need to be able to read or talk to enjoy it!” Karen said. “Let them turn the pages, chat about what you see on each page, make animal noises, be silly… babies don’t mind what you do, so long as you are sharing a book together.” Even once kids start to read independently, it’s still important to read with them. “Chat about the characters, discuss alternative storylines, ask what would they do if they were in the character’s situation,” Karen suggested. “And if you are bouncing off the walls at home, why not make the most of the summer and take a rug and a book down to the park?”

COVID has led to a many activities and services going online, even some we wouldn’t have thought possible. “Don’t worry if the kids have had excessive screen time over recent months; after all, the world has been turned upside-down!” said Karen. “Screen time isn’t about how much, but more about what you do with it.” Many family services have moved online over the last six months, so there is now a wealth of digital literacy support available to parents. “The library has an abundance of online resources for families,” Karen explained. “Online library sessions such as Toddler Tuesdays and Rhymes with Ryan, are all early literacy activities that parents and children can enjoy together at home. Plus, your library membership also gives you access to a huge collection of digital eResources, such as Britannica Library, World Book Online, Literacy Planet, Ziptales, National Geographic Kids and heaps more… all for free as part of your membership!”

THERE’S MORE TO DANCE
THAN JUST DANCING Learning to dance is a fun way to get fit and active. But did you know it comes with a bundle of other surprising benefits?
S
afe, positive and fun, dancing is one of the most popular activities for kids to enjoy—both for girls and increasingly for boys, too. But did you know that learning to dance has a bundle of other surprising benefits? “Learning to dance is about much more than just learning to dance,” said Nat from Dance Edge Sunshine Coast. “Kids are learning how to be confident human beings, coordinated, how to work in a team and, of course, self awareness… all skills they use in other areas of their childhood, and well in to adulthood.”
CONFIDENCE Dance is a wonderful way for kids to become more body aware and confident. As they become more comfortable in their own skin, their confidence and self-esteem also improve. “Students see how their bodies are different and capable of moving,” said Nat. “The confidence they gain by being able to dance builds their confidence to perform in all areas of their schooling and working life.”
STRENGTH AND FITNESS Dance is the ideal way to gain strength and fitness because it incorporates movements
48
N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2020
on all planes of motion and from all directions, which turns on and conditions various muscles. “Dance also has the additional benefit of improving balance and strength through rhythm and music, helping with coordination and balance,” said Nat.
TEAMWORK AND FOCUS Dance requires practise, discipline and focus—skills that can be useful in so many other areas of a child’s life. It also teaches kids that diligence pays off—they will be able to see the steady improvement of their skills. “One of the biggest benefits of dance is that children learn a physical activity that is character building and teaches them how to work in a team,” Nat said.
SOCIAL BONDING “There’s something wonderful about dancing with others, helping you feel a sense of connection and sameness, and making new friends,” Nat explained. “And it helps children improve their social and communication skills too.”
CHALLENGES YOUR BRAIN The brain power you need to access for dance
requires you to focus on both the constant movement and recalling moves and patterns, making it an excellent form of mental exercise, regardless of your age.
BOOSTS MOOD Movement and dance allow you to escape and let loose, boosting your mood, reducing stress, and decreasing the symptoms of anxiety and depression.
SPARK CREATIVITY Learning to dance can help to spark creativity in young children and help them to develop an appreciation for the arts. “Dance is a positive and safe way for kids to express themselves,” said Nat.
SKILLS FOR LIFE “We have a lot of Year 11/12 students, and some at university, who all continue to keep up one or two dance classes a week,” said Nat. “They love the physical and mental escape that a dance class can offer. It’s a skill for life. We have lots of little DE dancers whose parents used to dance with us (Jodi and I) growing up. They want the same experience for their own children.” More info at www.danceedgestudios.com.au K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

What is
BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT?
A
No matter how hard we try, sometimes we face behavioural issues with our kids. But when is it time to seek professional support?
s parents, we all expect behavioural issues at some point with our kids. But for some, these behaviours can significantly affect daily life. To support these families, a mobile Behaviour Support Intervention Service has opened on the Sunshine Coast. Karolin from Brilliant Life Services tells us more. W H AT I S B E H AV I O U R S U P P O R T INTERVENTION? Behaviour Support Practitioners assist people of all ages and their families to positively change any behaviour of concern. We work with the individual and those supporting them to promote positive behaviour change,” explained Karolin. Effective behaviour support results in improvements in quality of life, acquisition of valued skills, and increased community and social inclusion. W H AT A R E B E H AV I O U R S OF CONCERN? Behaviours of concern are those behaviours that may be a problem for a child or for others K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
around them. For example, when someone does things that hurt themselves, others or things. Or when the behaviour stops them from doing things others do—such as going to the park, learning at school or spending time with friends. Many children may behave in these ways occasionally,” said Karolin. “It is only a behaviour of concern when it is causing problems for the child and/or others. W H Y D O T H E S E B E H AV I O U R S OCCUR? All behaviours happen for a reason. It could be something to do with their body—such as they are in pain, they are not eating well, or they have a diagnosed medical issue. It could be the environment— it’s too noisy, too cold, they are bored, or there are too many people around. Or, it could be their way of communicating—they are hungry, thirsty, lonely, feeing upset, or their way of getting something desired. If any parent is struggling with a challenging behaviour, it’s always worth speaking to us to see if we can help.

SANCTUARY Early Learning Centres—where our little ones are safe, nurtured and educated. But behind all the hugs and the play-based activities, do you really know what goes into owning and running a high quality centre? We chat to Lauren Hall, founder and owner of Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, to find out. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START S A N C T U A R Y E A R LY L E A R N I N G ADVENTURE? I have a background in marketing and events but when the opportunity came to make the transition into childcare, it felt like the perfect move. As I spent more time in early learning, something ignited in me; I had discovered something that I was truly passionate about. So, in 2017, my husband and I purchased our first centre together. Three years later, we have just opened our sixth centre in Maudsland. W H Y WA S C R E AT I N G A FA M I LY OWNED CHILDCARE SERVICE IMPORTANT TO YOU? When I had my son, I really felt there was a

gap in the market for a family owned and operated early education service. I envisaged a service where the owners were accessible to families. So, at Sanctuary, we have a really hands-on approach at all our centres. We know all the families and we know our teams. We handpick all the educators and we work together with the directors to ensure we deliver the absolute best in care for every child, whatever their needs. Things at Sanctuary are continually evolving but, being family owned, we are able to make things happen as soon as needed. Before making decisions in the centres, we get input from families and educators to make sure we take a truly collaborative approach to early childhood and care. We also believe that, being family owned, we
could truly stand by our words when we say we are a holistic and inclusive service. We are there each day to work with the relevant authorities, work with families, offer those extras such as a Green Team that focuses on sustainability and teaching the children about recycling, upcycling and looking after the planet. We also have sports programs onsite, as well as a chef that cooks all the meals. As the owners, and as parents, we can make that happen. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT SO FAR? Oh, there are so many! Rather than pinpointing one moment, it would be one of the many times that we’ve really been able to make a positive difference to a family’s life— K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . ICING
• Beat the egg white until soft white peaks form. • Gradually add icing sugar and beat until icing has stiff peaks. • Spoon icing into a small ziplock or freezer bag. Twist top closed and push the icing into one corner. • Cut a small hole in the corner and pipe icing over the gingerbread men. • Decorate with Smarties.
Notes

PETER RABBIT™ 2

In cinemas Boxing Day (G)
In 2013, the world was introduced to the first family of the prehistoric era, The Croods. The Academy Award®-nominated comedy about a clan dealing with their changing world captivated global audiences, reminding us of the timeless importance of family… and just how little we’ve evolved. In December 2020, DreamWorks Animation invites you on an all-new adventure back in time with The Croods: A New Age when the The Croods face their biggest threat since leaving the cave: another family. Starring Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and Catherine Keener.
Peter Rabbit 2 is the live-action/CG sequel to the 2018 worldwide hit film that will once again bring Beatrix Potter’s beloved characters to a global audience. In the new film, Bea, Thomas, and the rabbits have formed a makeshift and loving family. But when Peter’s reputation for mischief spreads beyond the garden and his family is at risk, he must decide what kind of rabbit he wants to be. Starring Rose Byrne, Domnhall Gleeson, Elizabeth Debicki with Margot Robbie and James Corden as Peter Rabbit.

At Suncoast Little Learners we have always believed that nature play is essential to the well-being of early learners. Kids need to get outside, get dirty, get exploring, get back to nature.
As a pioneer of the Bush Kindy concept, we have now introduced Beach Kindy. During the warmer months our Kindy students spend time at the beach. In cooler months our Kindy and Pre-Kindy spend their mornings exploring the wonderful rainforest within our campus.
Love. Learning. Adventure.
