ay, spring has sprung, is anyone else excited to see the mercury rising?!

As we roll into summer, the first thing on many people’s minds is getting back in the water. Whether it’s nippers, surfing, or lazy Sundays at the beach, living in such close proximity to the ocean means that water activities are always on the agenda.

But what if you can’t swim?

I’m faced with this problem every day.

As one of those unfortunate people that grew up in a big (English) city, I never learnt to swim as a child. Now I have a very profound fear of water which has stuck with me throughout my adult life.

“Just jump in…” people often say, “you’ll get over your fear once you take lessons…” is another.

I’ve tried, failed, tried and failed.

(I know, I know, I’ll try again!)

Because of this, ensuring my kids learn to swim to a high level is top of the activities list. As the biggest hypocrite ever, I’m parked on the side of the pool (with very dry feet) coaxing them into the

water to learn this vital lifesaving skill, knowing that you’ve got to do it early before they are too old and end up like me!

So, this issue swim is IN! We chat to the Head Coach at the impressive new Aquatic Centre opening at St Andrew’s Anglican College to find out the critical swim skills every child should learn. To help get your kids into the pool, we have a comprehensive directory of all the swim schools across the region, And with this season’s must-have water accessories, we’ve got your beachside living covered.

As well as getting splashy, we also take a look at the many great activities available that safely introduce sport to little ones. And we sit down with local legend Matt Golinski to find out all about his involvement in a fab charity that helps to bring veggie gardens to schools.

As well as relocating, the much-loved store is also for sale. “Both myself and Jacquie, who own Finn and Lulu together, absolutely adore the store, but I need to give more time to my family,” Sian says.

Locally owned and run, Finn and Lulu Toys has always had a slow toy philosophy. “All our toys are educational, without batteries, and they all have a purpose,” explains Sian. “We are also very mindful to always source ethically made products.”

The Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience – Thompson Institute at the University of Sunshine Coast is inviting the community to participate in groundbreaking research to improve youth mental health. Alarmingly, over 50 per cent of mental health problems are established before the age of 14, so early intervention is important.

The Combatting Anxiousness for Learning Minds Study (CALM) is investigating how anxiousness impacts attention in children aged 9–11 years inclusive. The Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study (LABS) is working with young people to track changes that occur in the brain from ages 12–18.

This world-leading research will inform the development of evidence-based youth mental health programs to support young people and their families. Both studies are currently recruiting participants.

Not only a storywriter, but also a passionate musician, Gregg combines these talents when performing for his young audiences.

The children were taken on a cultural infused journey through dreamtime stories with strong moral messages using naturebased analogies.

Children from pre-Prep to Year 6 watched as Gregg sang songs, played the guitar, digeridoo and the digeridon’t – a homemade version of a didgeridoo.

Sunshine Beach State School students have further developed a strong connection to country with a visit from the Goombucca bus, part of their NAIDOC celebrations.

Students from all year levels learnt about local indigenous maps, places and culture, languages and celebrations, hunting and gathering techniques all inside the specifically designed bus. The fun didn’t stop there with students treated to an outdoor learning experience with local Gabbi Gabbi artists teaching them about symbols linked with indigenous story telling.

We all want our kids to be fit and active, but swimming is more than just another activity to fit into a busy week. Teaching adequate swimming skills is a matter of life and death.

W

ant to hear some scary stats? On average, 10 children under the age of five drown in Queensland each year, and an average of five children aged 5–17 drown each year. Between July 2004 and June 2017, there were tragically 192 drowning deaths of children aged between 0 and 17 years. As well as drownings, every year hundreds of Australian children aged 0–4 experience a non-fatal drowning (often called a near-drowning). According to the Samuel Morris Foundation

JUST KEEP SWIMMING As well as getting babies in the pool early, it’s critical to keep kids in swimming lessons until they have learned all the necessary skills.

A 2018 report by The Royal Life Saving Society Australia found that three out of four children had quit swimming classes by age eight, long before they’d learned skills that could save their lives.

The Royal Lifesaving report also found: • Only 25 per cent of children stayed in lessons long enough to reach national safety and swimming benchmarks at age nine and 10.

• 83 per cent of 12-year-old children couldn’t tread water for two minutes (the goal for children by the time they finish primary school).

• 40 per cent couldn’t swim 50 metres of freestyle or backstroke.

• One third couldn’t swim 25 metres of survival strokes.

Studies have shown that parents often overestimate their children’s swimming and safety abilities, with only 2 per cent of children aged 12 still doing swimming lessons.

“Not only do kids need to start swimming lessons early, they need to continue lessons throughout their Primary years,” says John.

“It might get challenging, as schedules get busy and kids pick up other sporting pursuits, but living in such a beachside location, it’s a matter of life and death that our kids learn to swim to a high level.”

The Australian Water Safety Council’s aim is for 100 per cent of children being able to meet all the swim survival skills (opposite) before leaving primary school.

INTRODUCING SPORT TO LITTLE ONES

S

ome kids naturally love sports. They are kicking a ball as soon as they can stand; running and cartwheeling with boundless energy.

Others? Not so much. Maybe they are reluctant to try new things, or they just can’t find something they enjoy. So, how do you get little ones active, instilling a healthy lifestyle early and helping them to find that sport they love enough to continue through to their teenage and adult years?

For preschoolers, the most important thing is being active, socialising and having a positive experience. Most places offer a trial class, so always take advantage of the opportunity to test the waters before committing. If they haven’t shown much interest in any activity so far, multi-sport programs are a great place to start. These programs usually rotate through different sports, giving kids a chance to try a range of activities throughout the term. Even though you might want them to stick at something and start to develop skills, at this age there’s nothing wrong with trying one activity one term and something totally different the next! Kids might go through a range of sports before they find the one that is for them, and that's OK! Once they reach primary age, kids can start junior team sports. At this age, it’s still all about having fun and having a go. For those that aren’t interested in team sports, there’s plenty of other options for primary kids, from rock climbing to trampolining and acrobatics. estled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Eudlo State School has just 65 students and a permanent staff of five teachers, four Teacher’s Aides, and a Business Manager. But only a few minutes from several large Sunshine Coast communities, and with no catchment area, this unique little school is rapidly capturing the hearts of many local families.

“Many people don’t realise that Eudlo is such a short drive away!” said Principal Ruth Machen. “And because we don’t have a catchment area, families from surrounding suburbs such as Forest Glen, Woombye, Glenview and Palmwoods are now realising they can benefit from our small class sizes and multi-age learning culture.”

Eudlo State School prides itself on offering a well-balanced curriculum, whilst maintaining a caring small school environment. “Our students work in an inclusive setting, where the cooperative and

multi-age grouped classrooms continually facilitate a child-centred approach to learning,” Ruth said. “The class groupings allow for more flexibility than is possible in schools with straight grades, and this allows us to be responsive to the needs of each individual student. This environment also prepares the students to be active Australian citizens with a life-long love for learning.”

Despite its size, the school offers its students a wealth of programs. “A distinctive aspect of our school is that students enjoy and appreciate the environment and creative arts,” said Ruth. “We also have an AustSwim based swimming program for all students, extension and tutoring programs, specialist Japanese and music teachers, and a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. And yes, we even have a tuckshop!”

The nurturing environment is also evident in their strong parent community. “Our school has an active Parents and Citizens Association which contributes greatly to the

student learning in our school.”

The school’s individualised approach is also mirrored in its positive behaviour strategy. “Our School community believes that the Principles of Restorative Practice are the most appropriate model to use with our students when encouraging and maintaining positive behaviours,” explained Ruth. “Restorative Practice encourages students to learn the social and emotional skills they will use throughout their lives such as active listening, problem solving, expressing emotion appropriately, developing personal awareness, empathy and taking responsibility. Within this model there is a strong focus on proactive strategies, including teaching and supporting the appropriate and expected positive behaviours to all students in the school.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE SUNSHINE COAST? Having grown up on the Coast and lived here most of my life, it is definitely my home and I love every part of it. I’ve lived in other places but always come back to where my heart is. It’s hard to find anywhere in the world that has a better climate, a more relaxed lifestyle or a more diverse natural beauty than the Sunshine Coast.

W H AT’S B E S T A B O U T LO C A L P R O D U C E? The key word when it comes to produce in this region is diversity.

We’re lucky enough to have access to world class seafood fresh from the trawlers each day, as well as beef, pork, lamb, chicken and dairy from the hinterland, and so many different microclimates on the Coast means we have a greater variety of fruit and vegetables than probably any area in all of Australia. And what makes it the best is the pride and care taken by the producers themselves.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PRODUCE? I have developed some great friendships with producers on the Coast over the past 30 years, and that network means I have direct access to a lot of the best ingredients available straight to the kitchen door. As a rule, the shorter the distance that your produce travels to get to you, the fresher and better quality it is, and the better the end product.

Many years ago I was president of Slow Food Noosa, a convivium of a world-wide movement that advocates for good, clean, fair food. I had been to Melbourne and visited Stephanie Alexanders School Kitchen Garden in Collingwood, and saw what a powerful experience that was for the kids. I suggested to the group that this was something we should be involved in establishing within schools in our region. Slow Food Noosa has since helped lots of schools in the area set up gardens and bring kids on the coast that bit closer to understanding how food is grown and why it should be respected.

AMONGST ALL OF THIS, YOU ALSO RUN VIEW BY MAT T GOLINSK! Luckily I don’t have to do much running of the restaurant, head chef Andrew Wilcox does most of that! My involvement with View by Matt Golinski is largely a creative one. I get to experiment and come up with new dishes using all the bounty of seasonal, local ingredients that are available to us in Noosa.

My favourite thing about my job at Peppers is working with the great team and showing them ingredients and techniques that they may not have seen before. We’ve all grown together so much over the past 18 months.

AND THE RESTAURANT ALSO HAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL APPRENTICE PROGRAM! Yes! I love teaching apprentices, they are the next generation of cooks, and any chance I get I like to teach them something new and inspire them to want to learn. It’s a tough industry with a low retention rate for young chefs, so the more we can encourage them and make working in a kitchen a fun experience the more likely we are to keep them.

I love just being with my girls when I get a break. I’m a keen distance and trail runner, so I do a lot of that, and I also love playing music with my friends.

Try getting a kid to eat a turnip normally and they’d scream the house down, so there’s something to be said for that connection to food. Hiding zucchinis and carrots in bolognese always seems to work too!

BILLY’S BUDDIES With over 8,000 children already participating in the program and more than 290 locations each week, Billy’s Buddies is the fun sports program that is taking the region by storm. We chat to Billy Slater to find out more.

illy’s Buddies is the brainchild of Billy Slater – former Melbourne Storm, Queensland and Australian Rugby League representative. Currently running across Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Sydney and Cairns, the sports program is the home of non-contact rugby league for kids ages two to six. And the little ones can’t get enough!

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START T H E P R O G R A M ?

One of my main inspirations for starting Billy’s Buddies was my own two kids, Tyla and Jake. They love running around and being active. For me, it’s important that as many kids as possible have the opportunity to learn about how to be active, run, jump and have a great time in the Billy’s Buddies program.

WHAT KEY SKILLS DO KIDS L E A R N I N B I L L Y ’ S B U D D I E S ?

We are a non-contact program, with the fundamentals of movement at heart. One of the key points of our program is that Billy’s Buddies is non-competitive program, it’s about giving kids the opportunity to be more active in a safe and fun environment.

We focus on how to pass, run and jump, all within structured coach-led sessions that help kids have fun being active. In our Billy’s Buddies program, kids will be involved in fun, high energy activities that focus on a range of different skills-based activities each week, for example ‘Hot Hotdogs’ which teaches kids how to pass a ball, catch a ball and run around the play area. These fundamentals are great for any kid in any environment. Each activity aims to build on the previous session’s skill levels to add

another element of fun and challenge. Kids love this as it keeps them interested. We also introduce a weekly theme to the games such as ‘Robots’ or ‘Dinosaur Week’, to take the kids on an interactive journey each week.

WHY TARGET THIS YOUNGER A G E G R O U P ?

I feel that being able to help younger kids have an appreciation for rugby league, sport and movement in general is critical. If we can provide them with a really positive set of experiences when they are young, then, fingers crossed, they will play sport and be active for many years to come.

Our Billy’s Buddies program is designed to help kids learn how to pass a footy, run around and to do movements that are similar to footy, but, let’s not forget that we want to have fun, especially, as we are teaching 2- to 6-year olds. The fundamentals that we teach, provide kids with great skills to take with them to any sport or just to be healthier.

DO GIRLS ENJOY IT TOO? Absolutely! The skills and activities that our fantastic coaches teach each session are designed for anyone. Adding to this, it’s non-contact, it’s heaps of fun and no two weeks are the same. Each 40-minute session is based on a different theme so the children are taken on a fun and exciting journey through theme-based games and activities – the skills and drills are all learnt subconsciously. We have designed our Billy’s Buddies program with kids in mind, they need to enjoy it.

BABY SLEEP CONSULTANT?

Desperate for a little extra zzzzz? We chat to Claire Andersen, Baby Sleep Consultant from Bubbasleep to find out what really happens when a Sleep Consultant comes to stay.

What happens on an overnight consultation?

I typically arrive around 5pm, spend the evening getting to know you and your child and being around for the bedtime routine.

During this time we discuss the issues you are facing and make a plan for the night to come.

I help you implement any sleep changes that need to be made right through the night.

I get up each time, helping you with the night wakings and I’m available to answer any questions as we go through the process. It can seem a little strange at first, meeting in the hallway in our PJs in the middle of the night, but you needn’t feel weird! It’s good to know someone is right there with you, supporting you through each night waking and helping get bubba back off to sleep. A lot of people initially feel very nervous about an overnight stay. I understand that you are inviting me into your home at a very vulnerable time, I will not make you do anything you don’t want to, I’m really understanding and you will feel at ease, I promise!

Will my baby cry?

This depends on a few things: the age of your baby, how strong any sleep associations are that you are wanting to change and the personality of your little one. Regardless of the amount of change we are making, or what approach we take, your baby may cry.

It does not mean that you have to leave them alone and I have certainly had consultations where baby has not cried at all. Taking the right approach for the family, getting the timing spot on and feeling calm and confident can help minimise any tears.

How do I know the method will work?

Of course, every baby is unique and what worked for your friend’s baby may not be a good fit for your baby. Although each bub is different, their sleep challenges are generally similar. Excluding a medical cause for sleep disturbance, there is always a solution. Many people try XYZ to help their baby’s sleep,

such as white noise machines, essential oil, comforters, and other props, and they don’t seem to help. The reason for this is because the cause of the problem has not been addressed. Identify the cause and you fix the problem. As long as we implement a method that you are comfortable with and you stay committed and in communication with me, things will improve quickly. You can also touch base with me any time after the initial consult until the problem has been resolved so you needn’t worry about ‘it not working’.

How long does it take to get baby sleeping better?

This can happen immediately and has in a lot of recent day stay consultations I have done.

In general you start seeing some major changes within three days and the process is typically finished in 1–2 weeks depending on how much ‘foundation’ work you need to do (such as routine, environment, positive sleep associations), and also how much change you want/need to make.

n this digital age, it seems that technology is used for almost everything. Kids are constantly using computers and iPads at school for learning, then playing games or using devices at home. What is often forgotten about throughout this is posture. If you watch a child using an iPad or similar device, you will probably see the poor posture that is associated with the use of a portable device. The head is forward and shoulders are rounded, causing muscles of the neck to work harder. This posture using modern devices has developed the name ‘text neck’.

WHAT IS TEXT NECK? Up until recently, neck problems in children were rare. Today, however, researchers at Harvard Medical Health predict that seven out of 10 people will experience neck aches at some point in their lives.

When we hunch over our devices to text, the muscles and tendons at the front of the neck tighten, while those behind the neck lengthen. The human head weighs about 4kg, but for every 2.5cm your head is tilted forward, the weight your neck needs to carry doubles. Over time, this causes the natural curve of the neck to flatten.

WHAT RANGE OF STALLS COME TO THE BABY & KIDS MARKET? We have all sorts of stalls! Families having a clean out of their no longer needed baby and children’s clothes, shoes, cots, prams, high chairs, baby baths, port-a-cots, toys. Many items are gently used or some are even in asnew condition. We also have local handmade businesses who make children’s clothing, baby bibs and burp cloths. Local businesses aimed at mums and children like to come along too, such as childcare centres, kids’ sports programs, swim schools, tutoring companies, massagists, chiropractors, the list is endless. I love having an outlet for the local small businesses to come along and showcase their products.

Plus, having everything all under one roof makes it super-easy, and a fun morning out for the family!

H O W M A N Y K I D S D O YO U H AV E ?

I have three children, Years 9, 7 and 1 and a gorgeous dog. We are a super-busy family with my husband working long hours and travelling frequently for work. We manage soccer, rugby league, cricket, cheerleading and some days I think I live in my car! Luckily

most of my work is aimed at mums so the best times to be active on social media is late at night (which suits me!) or during the day when kids are at school. We are also lucky to have the support of grandparents nearby.

I run a tight ship. Everything has its place and when things get out of place, I have a meltdown! I am a super-organised person, that’s the only way I can function with a busy household and a business. On a market week my phone is glued to my hand and I am constantly saying to my kids just wait a minute! The week after a market I like to have some downtime and try to stay off social media for a few days. Its relentless nowadays, with people being able to contact you through so many forms of media.
