t’s 4.30am. I’m in my PJs, having a sneaky cuppa and getting my head straight for the day ahead. It’s at times like this that the mama juggle never ceases to amaze me. And there’s never a time of year we feel it more than in the downhill slide into Christmas. The end-of-year wrap-ups and unbelievably cute Christmas concerts, combined with the craziness of planning for Christmas and getting organised for a well-deserved summer break, makes for one very frazzled mama. Like most Sunny Coast families, we often turn to the local playground for a much-needed respite from the chaos. The kids can burn oﬀ steam whilst you grab a coﬀee and just breathe for a moment. So, this issue, we take our team of investigators (aka the kids) to Stockland Aura to find out what it reeeeaally takes to create the perfect playspace. In our Education section, we head over to Matthew Flinders Anglican

College to find out how The Big Write is helping students develop a big love for literacy. We also pop over to Unity College, to check out their fabulous STEM program. acific Lutheran’s Junior Learning Extension Program, YACHTS (Young Achievers Creatively Honing Thinking Skills) embarked on a STEM challenge recently that took them on a time travelling ride in the TARDIS with their favourite superhero Doctor Who. As they opened the door of the TARDIS, they meet a man dressed very much like an 18th century sailor on a ship. He is Captain Arthur Phillip, who was overseeing the First Fleet – the 11 ships that sailed from Great Britain on 13 May 1787, to start the first European colony in New South Wales. He was distressed as he was unable to unload his cargo. They did not have the tools to get their supplies to the land and they needed to move their cargo before the other ships arrived. So, the Young Achievers were set a challenge to design, build and operate a hydraulic robotic arm (crane) that would help the Captain move the cargo from the ship to the land. Fortunately, The Doctor had some limited 21st century supplies in the TARDIS that they could use: cardboard, 10ml syringes, long plastic tubes, toothpicks and glue. Students recorded all of the steps of the design, construction, testing and critiquing in their journals and reflect on how their team approached the task. With activities such as this, learning can come to life, bringing problem solving, science, teamwork and history together in a way that students will never forget.

With 700 hectares of conservation and park areas ultimately planned for the new city, there will be an abundance of green space to choose from. “What makes these recreational spaces diﬀerent is the scope of their imaginative design,” said Josh Sondergeld, Aura Project Director. “And what makes them better is that they are part of a carefully designed, masterplanned community complementing the overall vision for Aura.” Stockland’s masterplan states that every home within Aura will be located within 400 metres of a park, providing spaces for families to gather, picnic and play as well as connect with other residents. “Families are an integral part of our communities,” said Josh. “They help lay the foundations for a strong, connected community containing a diverse mix of buyers of all ages and backgrounds.”

Playgrounds for all ages In addition to the skate plaza, Aura already features seven parks and playgrounds, and there are still more planned. Pedal Park, the first park created at Baringa, has been specifically designed as a ‘learn-toride’ facility for children. It features two circular bike tracks – a 134-metre beginners’ track with

road traﬃc signs and a tunnel, and a 145-metre track with ramps to test the skills of more advanced riders. In the centre of the park, there is a huge climbing tower with two large tunnel slides. There is also a set of swings (toddler and standard) a spring-loaded see saw, and a halfcourt basketball and netball court adjacent to a generous kick and throw area. All of the play areas are partially shaded with shade sails and have a soft fall base. With a beautiful bushland backdrop, the 6,000 square metre McArthur Park opened in December and is a nature-themed recreational space focused on climbing and adventure play, which is suitable for children aged six to 12. The park features a climbing frame, spinning swing, picnic space and kick around space with soccer goals. The newest park in Baringa is the 5,000 square metre Burnet Park. Designed for younger children aged up to six years, the park incorporates facilities for exploring and scrambling play including swings, slides, bridges, sand play and a climbing wall with ropes. The playful frog-themed playground of Frog Park, is another park, which is great for younger children. The playground includes a Ninja Warrior inspired ropes course, swings and slides, and a huge blue, yellow and green frog to scramble over. There is also a picnic shelter, a good-sized grassed area for games but no bathrooms. Baringa also features a gorgeous treehouse adventure playground on Lukin Terrace, just a short stroll from the newly opened retail centre where parents can grab a coﬀee. Designed for older children, this playground features two climbing trees, cubby houses and three tunnel slides as well as the hugely popular jumping pillow. Residents will also be able to easily access Aura’s Veloway – an extensive bike pathway that will link Aura’s seven parks. There are future plans for 200 kms of cycle way, which will form part of a national showcase of cycling infrastructure, encouraging families to use bicycles as a safe, environmentally friendly form of travel.

Starting ‘big school’ is an exciting time for kids (and parents!). What can you do to ensure a smooth transition?

reparing for the first year of school is an exciting time in the life of a child and their family! A quality, approved kindergarten program can support children in becoming ready for the adventures that await them at school. Helen Blenkinsop, kindergarten teacher and educational leader from Bella Grace Aroona, explains that play is important work for your child in their year before school. “Play is the meaningful way that children develop social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills,” she says. “It helps them to build relationships, learn how to communicate with others, resolve conflicts,

solve problems, and provides many opportunities to connect with their peers within a community of learning. Bella Grace Kindergarten Programs focus upon a holistic, play-based approach that supports each child in their development and incorporates children’s interests into rich learning experiences that encourage curiosity, wonder and a disposition for learning. “Bella Grace ELC kindergarten teachers support parents to help their child become socially and emotionally ready for school in many ways. Helping your child to recognise their belongings, pack and carry their bag, put on their shoes, go to the toilet without

help and participate in meal time routines will promote independence and self-confidence. Unity College is set for dramatic growth with the introduction of STEM, an innovative and engaging integration of science, technology, engineering and math.

ith skills such as computational thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity imperative in today’s world, Unity College students now have access to the newest educational technologies available with the recent purchase of Virtual Reality kits, Blue Bot robots, LEGO® WeDo 2.0 kits, Dash robots and EV3 LEGO® robotics, as well as an augmented reality topographic sand box. Students also learn how to code, design and create digital solutions, as well as program robotics across various applications learning to apply a variety of sophisticated algorithms as their skills develop. Prep to Year 3 students have in-class access to one to one Apple iPads which they use to create a range of digital solutions through guided play and scaﬀolded learning opportunities. From Year 4 onwards, students have individual iPads and are able

to take their iPads home for further educational purposes and digital citizenship development. Students learn how to apply a multitude of skills as they incorporate digital technologies into everyday learning through engaging activities, such as navigating maps using robotics, digitally recording scientific experiments and analysing results through mathematical graphing software applications. Students are also taught correct typing techniques on one to one full sized keyboards, ensuring the optimum development of this lifetime skill. Students in the early Junior Years now enjoy engaging lessons using the new LEGO® kits. Over the course of their lessons, they use bricks, gears and axels to build moving models of monkeys that swing and funny owls with moving eyes. These learning opportunities encourage collaboration with peers, eﬀective communication strategies, as well as working on fine motor skills and

creativity. These cohorts also use Blue Bots, an exciting programmable floor robot. Its childfriendly design, funny sounds and colourful lights makes it the perfect starting device for young coders. Teaching control, directional language, programming and algorithms, it is not only a wonderful device for Digital Technologies, but further promotes literacy, numeracy and other cross-curricular connections too. Building on these skills learnt in the early years, Junior students then develop their engineering skills and robotic coding with Dash Robots. Students use their knowledge of push and pull to create a LEGO® attachment for their Dash robot to navigate marbles around a course. Learners build on their coding language skills with the use of Tynker and Blockly coding apps. Learners apply their coding skills to drive their moon rovers over a lunar surface to the base. The use of the robot allows students to make links between mathematical concepts and the real world. Coding activities also allow students to develop computational thinking skills while exploring content in other learning areas. In Year 4 HASS, students learn about the First Fleet. Integrating Digital Technologies, the coding app Tynker is used to map the voyage taken by these first ships. Students then create their own quiz, based on the knowledge of key dates and facts. THE BIG WRITE Helping students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College develop a big love for literacy.

he lights are dimmed, there is music playing softly and the class of 20 students are peacefully engrossed in their tasks – it sounds like the setting for a yoga class but it’s not. It’s a Year 4 classroom writing lesson at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast. With literacy as a major focus at the College’s Primary School, students from Prep to Year 6 are benefitting from a respected model of teaching writing and raising writing standards known as the Big Write. Developed by experienced educator, Ros Wilson, and used widely in schools throughout the United Kingdom and Australia with great success, the Big Write model is based on the premise that ‘if you can’t say it, you can’t write it’. Big Write is an opportunity for students to learn how to generate ideas through conversation and fun activities in the classroom and at home, before engaging in independent writing tasks in soothing settings that promote calm and creativity. Students simultaneously learn skills in VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) to support their writing

confidence and engagement. Flinders has embraced the Big Write model this year as part of its mission to give every student the tools and support to develop their literacy skills and become proficient and enthusiastic writers. Head of Primary School, Trudi Edwards says the College is passionate about literacy and language development. “We recognise that children must first learn to express their ideas orally before they can confidently write these ideas on the page,” Trudi said. “Developing an expansive vocabulary through engaging in oral discussions and activities assists in building each student’s word bank, whilst also enabling them to organise their ideas prior to writing,” she said. “Needless to say, an expansive vocabulary is also critical for reading comprehension. “In fact, as Associate Professor of Education and the Arts, Deslea Konza from Edith Cowan University notes, the number and variety of words that children know in the early years is a major predictor of reading comprehension in the secondary schooling years and of broader academic and vocational success.

“The Big Write is a positive and practical approach to teaching writing that encourages every child to learn new words, explore the art of conversation and learn to communicate so they may actively develop their ‘writing voice’. “It helps students of all proficiencies realise that writing is enjoyable and an K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . opportunity to express their creativity, whilst also learning the skills of clear written communication. “This remains a critical 21st century skill.” Head of Teaching and Learning Debbie Planck says the Big Write model works by providing students with a new topic to inspire a writing task, every fortnight or so. To help students engage in their writing, there is plenty of creative stimuli, from themed dress-up days and excursions to Sea Life Aquarium and Australia Zoo, to classroom observation activities such as chicken eggs hatching in an incubator. “Part of the Big Write is teaching skills in vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation, and we play lots of exciting games in the classroom to build on these foundational skills,” Debbie said. “Students especially love Kung Fu Punctuation, where all punctuation marks are given corresponding kung-fu-style actions with accompanying sounds,” she said.

“This is proving highly eﬀective for students in learning the intricacies of commas, semicolons and full stops while having fun and moving their bodies.” Each Big Write involves students first discussing the topic with their family at home in preparation for their writing challenge the following day in class. When students return to the classroom to begin their ‘Big Write’, their thoughts and ideas about the topic are already rehearsed. “This provides them with the best opportunity to focus on the skills of writing and to write in depth about the topic,” Debbie said. “The end goal of The Big Write is to encourage students to produce a high standard of writing and to build their writing stamina to write independently for extensive periods of time. “We remind our students from Prep to Year 6 that the Big Write is an opportunity to set high expectations for themselves, to give writing a purpose, and to have fun.”

Dear Mummy, I know I cry at kindy drop off, and seem really frightened about being separated from you. I’m scared, excited and a hundred other words that I don’t even know yet. I have weird butterflies in my tummy that make me feel strange. But, please don’t be sad! As soon as you are gone, and Miss Ellie gives me a big hug, I feel safe and ready to explore. I start the day with my friends, we chat to each other whilst making the BIGGEST sandcastle. Mummy, you’d be so proud! Sometimes I get frustrated when the other kids take my spade, but Miss Ellie helps us to work it out together so we can all share. After morning tea, it’s time for art activities. We explore the garden for things to make collages. We paint pictures, we get messy. We stick, we colour, we create. I don’t know where the time goes, because all too quickly it’s lunchtime – yum! how much you like going out to places where other people cook food and bring it to you. Rest time comes and I’m exhausted. Though I’m not sleeping in my own bed, the kindy bed feels safe and snuggly, and Miss Ellie is always there to give us a pat or a cuddle. They aren’t as good as your sleepytime hugs, but they still feel nice. The afternoon goes by in a blur, but they are always fun. Miss Ellie has a different activity every day. We play alphabet and number games. The teachers use the words ‘learning intentions’ and ‘learning outcomes’ when talking to each other. I think that is grown-up speak for having LOTS of fun in lots of different ways. So, Mummy… I know you only see me crying, and you worry about me all day. But the butterflies go away and I have the BEST day at kindy – learning, making friends, and beginning to find my place in the world. And, my favourite bit? Your great big hug at the end of the day. SUNSHINE COAST LIBRARIES improving children’s literacy

The results are in! Sunshine Coast Council Libraries have helped improve children’s early literacy skills on the Sunshine Coast.

n 2012, the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) results indicated that children in Queensland were falling behind other states in language and cognitive skills. Queensland ranked a worrying sixth in the country and was 4 per cent below the national average. In response, the Queensland State Government initiated the First 5 Forever program. The First 5 Forever funding enabled Sunshine Coast Libraries to increase their number of children’s programs, activities and outreach events, and the latest stats show that it’s making a marked diﬀerence! The latest AEDC results show a 1.8 per cent decrease in the number of developmentally vulnerable children on the Sunshine Coast since 2012. “This is great news for our kids and for our wonderful library team who have worked tirelessly to deliver more than 3,000 First 5 Forever programs and activities to more than 102,000 participants,” said

Jenny McKay, Community Portfolio Councillor. “First 5 Forever has enabled our libraries to reach a much larger portion of our community, through year-round events and access to free resources that help parents and caregivers to support their child’s early language, reading and literacy skills. “Sunshine Coast Libraries host stalls at local family markets, attend large community events and run weekly Storytime and Rhymetime activities across our library branches.” Karen Gawen, Young People’s Services Supervisor from Sunshine Coast Council, said they were absolutely thrilled with the results. “In 2015, when we started the initiative, we used the 2012 stats as a benchmark, and the ultimate aim was to shift the trend,” said Karen. “We were hoping for a turnaround, but an almost 2 per cent decrease is incredible!” The First 5 Forever funding also enabled Sunshine Coast Libraries to deliver the

award-winning Story Seat project, as well as establish a very popular Story Walk at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens. Yes, we are in our tenth year of business this year, and I am so proud of where we are at now! We’ve steadily grown over the years and now I feel we’ve really established ourselves as a leading dance school in the region. We have a fabulous group of teachers and two awesome studios in Mountain Creek that offer a wide range of dance classes to cater for boys and girls from two and half years old and up. Choose a school with great facilities. For example, we have a fenced, grassed area for little siblings to play in, which is invaluable to those families with several kids. We also have big viewing panels and a comfy waiting room, so the parents are catered for whilst the kids dance. Offering a family friendly space is essential. WHAT SHOULD FAMILIES EXPECT WHEN STARTING DANCE CLASSES? Preschool dance classes are typically a gentle introduction to the basics of dance. If a child is unsure, parents can always stay in the studio and watch, and the viewing panels mean that Mum or Dad is still within sight if they do move outside the dance studio. W H AT ’S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PA R T O F T E A C H I N G ? The end of year concert is definitely a highlight for everyone! The kids get really excited, even the ones that are really shy or that don’t like to speak in public. The concert really boosts their confidence and it’s wonderful to see their love for dance really start to blossom. HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE CLASSES ARE FUN, WHILST KEEPING KIDS LEARNING AND PROGRESSING? For our little ones, the classes are all designed to be fun! I find that if you aim it at their level, they will enjoy it a lot more. Once they get older, classes might become more serious, but only when kids are ready for that challenge.

Anxiousness in primary school children

SHOULD PARENTS BE CONCERNED?

t is normal for children to experience anxiousness throughout their primary school years. Worrying about schoolwork, friendships or being scared of something can contribute to anxious feelings. However, when anxiousness occurs more frequently, impacting on daily life, it becomes a concern for parents. Understanding the diﬀerent triggers and symptoms of anxiousness will help determine strategies to manage anxiety levels.

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT ANXIETY: 1. Anxiety disorders are the number one mental health issue in 5–14 year olds, as reported in a recent Federal government report (2015). 2. Anxiety disorders often commence in childhood. 3. Addressing symptoms of anxiety early and giving children coping strategies may minimise development of an anxiety disorder. 4. Children’s developing brains make regulating their emotions and making decisions about managing anxiety levels more challenging.

SO, WHAT DOES ANXIOUSNESS LOOK LIKE? Children’s feelings of anxiousness often begin with worry. Children who continually worry about something may become distracted by their worrying thoughts, display angry or emotional behaviour or

become withdrawn. A physiological reaction can accompany the observed behaviour as the brain is senses a threat due to the excessive worry. Whether the threat is perceived or real, children experience a fight, flight or freeze response. To illustrate these three responses, consider the task of delivering an oral presentation at school. 1. Fight response – the child may refuse to give the talk or may exhibit signs of irritability, emotional outbursts or uncooperativeness leading up to the presentation. 2. Flight response – the child may refuse to go to school that day or may run out of the room when it’s time for their presentation. 3. Freeze response – the child may be unable to remember their lines, even though they have practised them many times successfully.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OUR ANXIOUS CHILDREN? 1.

Identify the source of their anxiousness through discussion. 2.

Validate children’s feelings of anxiousness. Children need to know their parents understand and sympathise with how they are feeling. 3.

Discuss how to solve the problem. Encourage talking regularly with a parent, friend or teacher when they experience ongoing anxiousness. 4.

Develop strategies to deal with anxious feelings. Research indicates mindfulness skills (such as breathing slowly), can assist with decreasing children’s feelings of anxiousness.
