Can you believe it?

When I was a child, 2020 sounded so futuristic. I imagined there would be flying cars, we’d have cities on the moon and wear mad fluoro clothes.

In reality, I don’t feel that different from the child I was. Yes, the world has changed, but not nearly as fantastically as I’d envisaged.

To find out how my kids imagined their future, I recently asked them what they thought 2050 would look like.

Surprisingly it was much the same as my childhood vision: flying cars (yes please!), holidays to space (hmm, sounds cold), and phones implanted inside your head (gosh, no thanks).

Diving straight into the future and the new school year, this issue we are all about getting back to school! We chat to the experts at Sunshine Coast Grammar School to find out about their Prep transition program and how they integrate outdoor learning into their student learning programs. We also pop over to Nambour Christian College

to learn about their impressive French program for early learners.

If you have a new starter this year, some of the region’s best educators share their tips on how we can help our little ones settle into their new classroom. Yes that’s right, Property Investor Cooking and cleaning: though necessary to ‘surviving’ this parenting journey, these tasks don’t carry the same esteem as ‘Property Investing’ do they? Anyway, who wants to just survive when we have the potential to succeed?

For most of us success looks very similar – to have financial freedom to spend more time with the ones we love (and paying someone else to do the cleaning!).

Speaking with Korry from QLD Invest, “If someone told me how property investing could save me $100,000+ in tax over the past decade, whilst also building my income and capital, I would have jumped in a long time ago.” He continues,“When I first started on the property investment journey I quickly fell victim to ‘paralysis by analysis’. With interest rates now in the 3% range, this is a good time to start talking with us for investments which make 6%+. We also provide those wishing to retire with a range of options suitable to Self Managed Super properties.”

Literature Festival

Attracting 4,500 school students and offering over 115 talks and workshops, Voices on the Coast Literature Festival 2020 is a significant event in the Sunshine Coast cultural calendar.

t’s our 25th festival this year! It was back in 1996 when two teachers from Immanuel Lutheran College decided to bring authors and illustrators to the Sunshine Coast for one day of talks and workshops, initially involving 23 schools.

Now, in 2020, the festival is held over four days, attracts 4,500 school students, offers over 115 talks and workshops by 28 presenters and is attended by 70 schools from a 200km radius. It should suffice to say that the festival has been an overwhelming success over the last 25 years.

In 1996, a partnership was formed with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in its first year of operation, which is still strong today. As the University has grown, so too has the festival, which takes

Jan Latta

Steven Herrick is the author of twenty-four books for children and young adults. His books have twice won the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and been shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year on nine occasions.

He is widely recognised as the pioneer of the verse-novel for children and young adults. His verse-novel by the river – a memorable novel about growing up in a small country town – won both the German Catholic Book of the Year and the German Youth Literature Prize in 2019.

Jan Latta is an author and wildlife photographer of 17 True to Life books. She photographed leopards in Sri Lanka, pandas in China, chimpanzees in Uganda, tigers in India, orangutans in Borneo, sloths in Costa Rica and Africa in order to tell the animals' stories. She is the ‘voice’ of endangered animals and their survival efforts. 14 of her books are listed in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Adventures in the Wild is her new book, full of fabulous photographs and close encounters with wild African animals.

The festival fosters a love of literature in children and young people.

zHarvest has recently launched a new primary education program, aimed at inspiring kids to eat healthily, waste less and become change makers in their local community.

Titled FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training), the program is designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food!

Lyfta is currently used in over 350 schools in the UK, Finland and the United States, providing students with opportunities to explore new places around the world and meet the inspiring human beings who live there.

Nationally, one in four children are overweight or obese and many do not eat enough fresh fruit and veg. This affects how they learn at school and can lead to poor physical and mental health.

Half of all food waste comes from the home, so the kids and their families can all be part of the solution.

Designed for Years 5 and 6, the FEAST program runs for 7-10 weeks and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum STEM Learning Areas. ozharvest.org/feast

Virtual reality (VR) can make learning more intuitive and memorable.

The organisation has also been studying the benefits of their technology for students with dyslexia, who often find it difficult to read out loud.

“Based on case studies from numerous users and extensive classroom sessions, both instructing children to use Lyfta and observing their experiences of learning through VR, we conclude that children find learning content in VR more intuitive and memorable,” said Ferit. “We are conducting academic research in collaboration with two Finnish universities, to understand the potential of VR for dyslexic children. The preliminary results show that a purposefully designed VR environment can significantly improve a dyslexic child’s reading experience.”

he Sunshine Coast is blessed with a plethora of incredible high-quality schools – state, independent, private, faith-based, day and boarding. J WHAT IS AN ‘EXCELLENT’ RATING? Sue Inglis, Pelican Waters Golden Beach Kindergarten

W

hen choosing a centre, you will often see the centre’s NQS (National Quality Standard) ‘rating’ on their information. For everyday families, it can be confusing, as there are several layers to the rating system.

To break it down, centres are assessed in seven quality areas that span across a child’s entire experience in early childhood education. The centre is given a rating for each quality area: ‘Working Towards’, ‘Meeting’, or ‘Exceeding’. Only once they achieve ‘Exceeding’ in all seven areas, can they apply for the NQS ‘Excellent’ rating.

The Excellent rating is the highest rating a service can achieve and is awarded for three years.

After this time services have the option to re-apply.

The Excellent rating is not easy to get! Our centre – Pelican Waters Golden Beach Kindergarten – is one of only two kindergartens on the Sunshine Coast to have received the Excellence rating twice. Less than 20 centres across Australia have been awarded this rating twice, so we are very proud of that!

anuary means many children are starting childcare or kindy for the first time. As unknown territory for both the child and the parents, it can be an exciting yet nervous time! To help your child adjust, make sure you’ve shared a couple of orientation sessions prior to your first day.

These sessions are designed for both parent and child to get to know the daily routine at the centre and to make your first day easier.

Different centres will provide different items, so check with your own service ahead of time as to what they will provide for your child each day. A

ccording to a recent study, a successful Prep transition program can contribute to up to 60 per cent of student learning improvement in academic and social development.

Therefore, a school’s approach to Prep transition is not only critical to a child’s introduction to ‘big school’ but also their long-term academic results.

A successful transition to school should be a dynamic process, beginning well before a child starts school and continuing until children and families feel a sense of belonging at the school.

Genevieve Hudson, Dean of Primary Prep to Year 2 at Sunshine Coast Grammar School explains that, with a successful transition, by the time a child steps foot in the classroom on their first day, they already feel a sense of belonging and reassurance.

“Our Orientation and Transition program covers a range of experiences to cater for the wide range of readiness and diverse background experiences of the children who join us,” says Genevieve.

“Knowing who is who, where things are, being familiar with the surroundings, and knowing what to expect is very important to the emotional wellbeing of each child and parent.”

For Sunshine Coast Grammar School, these transition experiences include a wide range of activities. “The Kindy students have weekly visits to the school library for book borrowing,” says Genevieve.

“They also play in areas of the primary campus playground, have weekly bush kindy explorations inside the school grounds, weekly

swimming in the school aquatic centre, weekly dance lessons with the School Principal, pop-up experiences in the Visual Art Room, and special age-appropriate assemblies, chapels and celebrations.”

Kindy children will also meet a range of primary school teachers, including their future Christian Studies and Performing Arts teachers – who all teach Kindergarten to Year 6. “Other frequent visitors to our Kindergarten rooms are Prep teaching staff, the Head of Primary, and Dean of Primary Student Wellbeing.”

By the time the child attends their enrolment interview and November play dates, they know the staff that they will interact with during their Prep year. “The Kindy children become very familiar with people and places, routines and expectations, and have a wellplanned transition that spans over two years.”

Transition experiences are also available to families who attend kindergartens that aren’t attached to the school. “The Dean of Primary (P–2) often visits local kindergartens to interact with our future Preps in their own Kindy environment,” Genevieve says. “These children are also invited to attend some special age-appropriate events at the school during the year before Prep.”

One such event is the annual ‘Romp in the Forest’ – a K–2 celebration of the importance of outdoor learning. With a stunning bush setting, outdoor learning is a significant part of the philosophy at Sunshine Coast Grammar School. “Our gorgeous outdoor spaces provide our littlest students with the perfect environment to develop curiosity, imagination and critical thinking skills – all things that will significantly enhance their academic journey as they progress through the school.”

Closer to the commencement of their Prep year, all Kindy children can meet the Prep teaching staff during a series of play dates in the Prep Precinct.

“The purpose of these play dates is for Prep teaching staff to develop a positive and supportive relationship with each child and parent and to create greater confidence and connections.”

As the new school year approaches, the transition program provides another opportunity for incoming Prep students to become accustomed to their new environment.

school,” says Genevieve. “At the party, the children can reconnect with the Prep Precinct, and meet Prep staff and classmates, which contributes to a sense of excitement and ensures less anxiety on the first day.

A TRANSITION FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY A strong transition program not only needs to cater for the child, but also needs to involve the family. “Families have an important role to play in supporting their child in the transition, and we ensure families are included every step of the way,” says Genevieve.

Communication is key in the Sunshine Coast Grammar School transition program.

“We provide detailed printed and electronic information to our incoming parents regarding routines and transitions to ensure parents know what to expect,” says Genevieve. “We are also able to offer support to parents who may be expecting some separation anxiety. A parent’s sense of calm usually transfers to their child.”

This year the Dean also presented a series of parent workshops. “This helps to develop a connection between home, Kindy and school,” says Genevieve.

Transition statements and parent-teacher interviews also provide Prep teachers with valuable personalised information about each child early in the school year.

AT ‘BIG SCHOOL’ During the first weeks of Prep, parents are encouraged to stay in the classroom a little longer, to help develop a sense of security and a stronger relationship. “Children benefit from seeing parents and teachers as partners,” explains Genevieve. “Siblings are able to visit and each class has a buddy class of older children to interact with.”

And, the transition program doesn’t stop at Prep!

“We also transition our Prep children into Year 1 towards the end of their Prep year,” explains Genevieve. “We value the transition process so much that our Year 1 children also visit Year 2 classrooms and connect with Year 2 teachers before the new school year. This helps to minimise any anxiety or apprehension about change that may occur over the holidays and contributes to a stronger sense of wellbeing.”

Understanding the impact an effective transition program can have on a child’s introduction to the school, Sunshine Coast Grammar School also offers a transition program for new families joining the school.

“New children who enrol from other schools are allocated a buddy and a buddy family,” says Genevieve. “The buddy family contacts the new family and helps to make them feel welcome on the first day.

They also often meet in the holidays before school commences. There is great power in having at least one classmate who can support a new student on day one or even in the days before school starts.”

“The transition program has been so successful that we have embedded it into practise for the past 20 years,” says Genevieve.

“We find it enhances the opportunities for children to become really familiar with anything new or different. Their emotional wellbeing is paramount to us.”

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START A LANGUAGE! CHILDREN AT NCC EARLY LEARNERS CAN NOW LEARN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR LANGUAGES AS PART OF THEIR WEEKLY KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM.

f you have eaten off a menu, admired your silhouette or come to attention, you are using words originating from France. As a language with such a presence in the fundamentals of English, NCC early learners Buderim and Nambour centres have introduced weekly French lessons to their kindergarten rooms.

“NCC chose French as it is one of the ‘romantic’ languages of the world,” says Lisa Brotherson, Director at NCC early learners

Buderim. “Romantic languages have similarities to English and help, simultaneously, develop the English language.”

Learning a foreign language from a young age also supports academic achievement, as it improves cognitive development, memory and problem solving skills.

“Research shows that learning a second language boosts problem-solving, critical-thinking, and listening skills, in

addition to improving memory, concentration, and the ability to multitask,” Lisa continues. “Children proficient in other languages also show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility.”

There are also cultural benefits to studying a language, such as expanding a child’s horizons beyond their own cultural experience. “We have noticed it helps to create a sense of identity as well as encouraging multicultural appreciation and honours diversity.”

The program started in February 2018 with Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA). ELLA is a digital, play-based language learning program for preschool children. “This Australian Government initiative inspires children by driving a genuine interest in new languages and cultures,” says Lisa. “We were excited to jump on board and pioneer the project.”

Sessions are taught in the classroom by a staff member from NCC, coincidently named Ella!

“Ella is studying French at school and lived in France whilst on a transfer program, so she was well suited to the role,” explains Lisa. “Also, she came to the Sunshine Coast as a child so there is that beautiful serendipity to it. Luckily, with of the ELLA program you don’t need a French naturalist, you just need someone to facilitate the program, who has a passion for languages.”

“I start our French lessons by saying bonjour class, ca va? Which means hello class, how are you,” says Ella. “The class responds with Bonjour Ella, ca va bien!”

“The children learn a wide range of colours and play different games associated with the colours in French,” Ella says. “The children’s favourite thing about French is reading a book called Pete the Cat, where in the story his shoes change colours. We sing this book together as a class and substitute the colours in the book with the French words. It’s amazing how fast the children learnt all the vocabulary I have taught them so far. I am so proud of my French class!”

After dedicating 12 months of exploring ‘Neighbourhood Play’ in depth, walking neighbourhoods with residents, and talking with over 240 parents and children – after discussing emerging neighbourhood play themes with sociologists, psychologists, town planners, pediatricians, parenting experts and many others – we have honed our knowledge and can now, with unfortunate certainty, share with you some very alarming facts that point towards a negative trajectory not only for children, but for the health of the nation.

Teaching kids to be DIGITAL

DETECTIVES KIDS MAY KNOW HOW TO GET ONLINE, BUT DO THEY KNOW HOW TO SOURCE ACCURATE INFORMATION?

H

ands up who else remembers the many days spent in the library researching school projects?

There was no Google and no instantly checking things from your laptop.

Instead, information was sourced by rifling through the pages of the Encyclopaedia and various text books.

Though technology now offers kids open access to a deluge of information, fact checking remains an essential part of learning as the digital world can be the biggest culprit for false information.

A 2015 study from Stanford University History Education Group (HEG) found that students significantly lacked the ability to recognise credible information online. The report stated: ‘Many assume that because young people are fluent in social media they are equally savvy about what they find there.

Our work shows the opposite.’

In short, technology has moved at such a pace that kids are yet to develop the skills to absorb, assess and sift through the unprecedented amounts of information they are bombarded with.

So, how can we help our kids to become savvy digital detectives?

Consider the source We can generally trust a printed textbook, however, for digital information we need to research the source. In fact, for any online

content we need to consider rather than simply consume information.

Start by investigating the site – research its mission, it’s contact information, or any previous articles. Then research the author – are they credible? Are they even real?

Also, check the date on the article. You may find that is too old or and irrelevant to current events.

See beyond popularity Just because something is on page 1 of Google, doesn’t mean it is the most credible source. If someone has 100,000 Instagram followers, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily telling the truth. Superior SEO and polished website design can create a false sense of security, and we need to look beyond that.

Read beyond the headline To encourage clicks, online headlines are designed to be attention grabbing. We need to read beyond those headlines to uncover the whole story. If it’s too outlandish, it may be satire, further research of the site should reveal this.

Learn the reputable sources Just as we put our trust in textbooks, there are still some reputable sources out there, and the library is still one of the best resources! Your library card gives you access

to the full digital version of Encyclopaedia Britannica, as well as a plethora of credible sources, so there is no need to spend money buying text books or waste a bundle of time trying to sort right from wrong on Google.

Search with them Next time your child has a project to research, sit and search with them. Show them the additional search options (such as putting specific terms in quotes), and the filter tabs that allow you to search verbatim (exactly that word), or by type (news, image, video). You can even specify a word not to be included by putting a hyphen in front of it.

If there is a site you trust, put a colon before the site name in the search bar and the search engine will only search that site.

For example, “penguins”:abc.net.au will pull up all the stories the ABC has published on penguins.

These digital detective skills will be something that will become vital to our children as they progress through their academic journey. Most universities today dictate that any essay sources must be from either a credible textbook or verified source. And, as they grow into digitally savvy adults, their ‘fake news’ detector will become second nature.

y the end of the summer holidays, many kids are itching to get back to school. Others, however, may be apprehensive about returning to the classroom – maybe they were struggling in certain subjects or feeling disengaged from learning. ust in time for school holidays, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast (formerly Underwater World) has become home to a gorgeous colony of little blue penguins. The brand-new zone will take guests on a journey from an above ground observation deck to an underwater vantage point for an all-encompassing look into the life of a little penguin.

According to Quinn Clarke, General Manager of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, the little blue penguins exhibit will be an entertaining mix of animal encounters and hands-on activities.

“We are excited for visitors from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, all over

Australia and the rest of the world to meet our adorable colony of little penguins in our state-ofthe-art new zone,” said Quinn.

“Throughout the development of this project, we have been determined to create a unique visitor experience that replicates the natural habitat of little penguins and educates guests while being innovative and fun.”

Guests will learn about the lifecycle of a little penguin, what they eat and how to help protect them in the wild.

“Little blues spend roughly 80 per cent of their lives swimming and foraging for food, so we are building them a massive pool here for them to explore. We also have nesting burrows and room for them to waddle around on the land,” she said.

“We will be feeding the little penguins a healthy diet of tiny little fish, especially whitebait and small whiting. We look forward to seeing this raft of penguins settle into their new home at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast,” said Kate.

Little penguins are the smallest of seventeen penguin species and are usually found on the coastline of Australia’s southern states. This is the first time that little penguins have been on the Sunshine Coast.

“Human impacts such as introduced predators, marine pollution and human interaction are common threats to the little blues in the wild,” Kate explained. “So these little penguins will play an integral role in helping educate our guests about the threats that they face in the wild and how we can help protect them.”

Alongside this exciting new addition to the aquarium, visitors will still be able to meet SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast’s other exciting sea creatures including seals, grey nurse sharks, rays, turtles, lionfish, moray eels and countless other intriguing exhibits.

The new exhibit mirrors the natural habitat of the little blue penguins.

• Little penguins spend approximately 80% of their life in the water but return to land to breed, moult and rest.

LUNCHBOX EXPRESS Back to school means back to lunchboxes! Love them or hate them, packing a healthy lunchbox that the kids will eat is a critical part of each day. Never fear, Australia’s School Lunchbox Dad, George Georgievski, is here to help!

CHEESY CHICKEN NUGGETS Makes 8–10 Getting the kids to shape their own nuggets means they’re more likely to actually eat them.

These can be eaten freshly baked and are great in lunchboxes too.

INGREDIENTS

1 cooked chicken breast, sliced (or use cooked lamb or beef) ½ cup grated cheddar 3 slices of wholemeal bread (or 3 cups roughly chopped bread offcuts) Oil spray, for greasing (optional) 2 tablespoons tomato sauce or barbecue sauce METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C or your air-fryer

on medium heat.

food processor, blitz the chicken, cheese and bread for about 30 seconds until the ingredients are well combined.

ROB’S DATE & COCONUT BITES Makes 9 These yummy two-ingredient bites make an excellent treat to pop in school lunchboxes, as they contain no added sugar. Try adding a little cocoa powder for a chocolaty taste. These keep well in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

INGREDIENTS

10 dates, pitted (or use dried apricots, which are just as yummy) ⅓ cup desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling METHOD 1. Place the dates and desiccated coconut in a

blender and blitz until everything looks mushy and really sticky.

2. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and roll teaspoons of the mixture into nine balls.

3. Roll the balls in a heap of desiccated coconut and ensure they’re evenly coated – the idea is for all the stickiness to be covered by the coconut.

4. Pop them in the fridge for 1 hour until set.

KEEP IT BALANCED AND HEALTHY

In each lunchbox, I make sure there is a portion of protein, some veggies, dairy, fruit and a healthy treat.

I prefer to include sugar-free treats as I don’t understand treats being automatically associated with sugar.

Why reward your kids with something that’s not good for them?

REMEMBER THE NUMBER FIVE

Make sure you include five fresh items (three veggies and two fruits) in every lunchbox. This is essential nutrition for growing bodies!

PREP IN ADVANCE

I like to be inspired in the moment when making lunches, but I still do some prep in advance to make life easier. I make sure all my fruit and veggies are washed, then it’s just a quick chop and assemble and we’re good to go. I also make some things ahead of time.

Picky eaters are more likely to try something new if it looks cool.

Why is dance a great kid’s activity?

Dance provides so much to a growing mind and body: confidence and coordination for life, it makes for well organised teenagers and young adults, friendships, social skills, a focused mind for school studies and, of course, fitness.

What should you look for when choosing a dance studio?

Our best advice is to find the right ‘vibe’ for your child and ask if the dance studio offers a trial class. If your child comes out of that trial class “buzzing”… embrace it! Dance is for life!

Studio culture is number one for us here at DE Studios. The right mix of experienced, qualified, talented teachers along with the studio ‘vibe’ should be your first thoughts when looking at where to send your child for dance classes. You want the dance studio you choose for your child to foster the love of dance first, above everything else. If your child loves going to the dance studio, they will love their dance classes and have a positive learning experience.

With a passion for the health and wellbeing of all animals, Tania Barton followed her dream to open a cat retreat. Now 12 years on, her feline haven has expanded to become a sanctuary for cats and cat lovers alike.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU OPEN HOBBITS KNOB CAT RETREAT? I have always been passionate about the health and wellbeing of all animals and had a special connection with animals from a very young age. I grew up in a small country town on acreage and was able to have pretty much whatever animal I wanted. Therefore, I would often organise more pets with my school friends or other family members, until I had my own little menagerie! I would come to be known as the rehabilitator of sick or injured wildlife. I absolutely love the fact that, by having animals in my life it has helped me to become a more compassionate, caring person, and taught me how to care greatly for living things. I always knew that I would work with animals, especially cats.

I knew that even though my career path went towards Veterinary Nursing, I wanted to offer a more personal caring environment where I could take care of cats and offer a service of optimal health and educate the community on following my passion of cat care.

WHAT SERVICE DO YOU OFFER AT THE CAT RETREAT? We safely house cats whilst their owners are unable to care for them for whatever reason (such as holidays, moving house, family emergencies, parties, hospital trip). We take care of the cats’ needs to ensure their time at the retreat is stress free, comfortable

We are constantly making improvements and changes to the business structure and the professional, personal care that we provide to both the clients and the cats.

In the first six months of opening the Cat Retreat Café re-homing program, we were able to give 20 cats a new, loving furrever home.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE CAT CAFE? We have transformed our establishment into a cat lovers’ haven where patrons can simply enjoy a coffee and cake in our cat themed café or the ultimate cat interactive experience in the separate Zen Zone. By having a controlled environment in which we can introduce Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge cats to patrons, they are helping provide extra love to the cats. They may also develop a beautiful connection with one of the cats and apply to adopt them through the program.

They can come and enjoy the cat themed café and tranquil environment, whilst enjoying amazing coffee, tasty cold drinks, cakes, treats or lunch. We also love watching patrons interact with each other over a common interest, cats, allowing them to break down social barriers in a comfortable, non-judgemental space. I especially love to see and hear people’s reactions to the gorgeous cats and how they love to just sit and chill in their space.

W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PART ABOUT THE RESCUE WORK YOU DO? Our team has the privilege of assisting the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge in providing further love, care, rehabilitation and training to cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected. We also get to help with the interaction of cats and humans in a relaxing but controlled setting, which not only develops the rescue cats’ confidence with humans, but helps them to become ready for rehoming.

W H AT ’S YO U R FAV O U R I T E T H I N G ABOUT CATS? Their eccentric personalities and their absolutely gorgeous faces! I have a connection with cats that allows me to feel comfortable, relaxed and safe when I am with them. They help break down psychological and physiological barriers.

CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT CATS THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW? Cats have an amazing memory, which is why cats are so good at holding grudges. Cats are able to remember distant memories that can become triggered by very positive or very

negative events, which were either emotional or linked to survival.

D O YO U H AV E A N Y F U N S T O R I E S TO SHARE FROM THE RETREAT? Our life at the retreat is full of fun and amazing experiences with the cats. There is never a day that goes by that isn’t filled with smiles due to the personality or action of the cats. Often a staff member will go and get all of the rest of the staff to watch a cat’s crazy or beautiful antics.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CAT RETREAT? We are constantly making improvements at the Cat Retreat, whether it is introducing new procedures or educating staff, but we are hoping to get the community more engaged in as much cat related activities as possible to help raise awareness for animal welfare. Through the Cat Retreat Café, we are about to launch classes to learn, engage and interact with the cats, whether it be through yoga and meditation or scrapbooking and craft activities.
