AS BUSY PARENTS WE SPEND OUR TIME ASSESSING AND EVALUATING THE EXPERIENCES WE WANT TO SHARE WITH OUR CHILDREN, WITH WEEKENDS OFTEN BECOMING A CYCLE OF CULTURAL VISITS TO THE CITY OR DAY TRIPS TO THE COAST FOR SOME SURF AND SUN. WE SELECT DESTINATIONS ON THEIR MERITS TO EDUCATE, ENTHRAL AND CAPTURE OUR CHILDREN’S INTEREST AND IMAGINATIONS. HOWEVER, IN DOING SO, WE OFTEN OVERLOOK THE DISCOVERIES AND NATURE EXPERIENCES THAT ARE ONLY A SHORT WALK FROM OUR DOORSTEP – THOSE HIDDEN LITTLE TREASURES THAT ARE JUST WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED. Walking with your children is more than just great exercise and a few extra steps on your Fitbit. It’s an investment of your time and a rare opportunity to share one-on-one moments with your children. It can also be fun and educational. Walking games There are lots of games you can play when walking, from jumping over cracks in the cement footpath to racing competitions. One of my favourites is the shadow game. True to its name, the shadow game is about making different shadow shapes with your body as you walk, from tall giraffes with arms up high to arms out wide as flying birds in the sky. My two, being typical siblings, also like to turn the shadow game 10

into ‘Mummy, I’m standing on your shadow head’ and ‘Sister, I’m jumping on your stomach’. You may get a few odd looks from the neighbours, but the laughter is worth it. The shadow game is more than just a little fun – it’s an important lesson in the science of the universe. It gives you a practical opportunity to put into context the earth’s orbit, changes of seasons, the difference between day and night and, with older children, a starting point to a discussion on the solar system. You can always follow up the walk with a trip to the local library to research the solar system or a YouTube tutorial on the earth’s orbit.

Nature treasure hunt It’s surprising how many ‘treasures’ you can find walking around your neighbourhood. Rocks, feathers, flowers, seedpods and sticks are all there for the taking if you take the time to look. Many can simply be found near the footpath or green strip outside your home. Being a keen gardener, I particularly love collecting leaf treasures and it’s also become a favourite treasure hunt for my children. We hunt for different sensory leaf features like colour, shape, scent and texture. We discuss what is the same and what is different about each of our nature finds. These treasures are then stored in a ‘nature box’ for later use in craft and art projects. Aside from the sensory value of leaf collecting, leaf treasure hunts are an opportunity to discuss all sorts of topics with your children, from the biology of plants, covering the process of photosynthesis and why it is vital for plants to grow, to air pollution and why growing plants of any kind is important for our environment. Hunting for nature treasures is more than just looking for pretty things – it’s the foundation of understanding the importance of our environment and our children’s place in it. And scientific research shows that plants make you smile, therefore improving one’s state of mind, wellbeing and happiness. Nature discoveries Aside from games and treasure hunts, walking in your neighbourhood is also a fantastic way to discover secret hidden places or local parklands you didn’t know existed close to home. For me, walking with my children has been a fantastic way to explore our unfamiliar northside suburb in the Moreton Bay Region, a pretty place with picturesque creeks and bushlands where you can still spot the occasional wallaby or even koala! Only last summer, we took a detour on a walk to the local supermarket to discover the most beautiful little spot down by the creek. It was breathtaking, a lush grassy area under the canopy of a Moreton Bay Fig, filtering light through its leaves as butterflies in every colour you could imagine fluttered around us. We unanimously agreed it was magical and if fairies are real, this is where they live. In the eight years I’ve lived here I had never before visited this magical spot just ten minutes walk from our front door.

Discovering these secret spots is a lesson in the balance of urbanisation and nature’s place in it. I believe this is so important for children, not only for their awareness of the natural environment but also their imagination. Who doesn’t want fairies living around the corner! Take time out This weekend, take some time out and walk in your neighbourhood. Go for a treasure hunt, collect some sticks, bring them home and make a dream catcher. Go on an adventure. Climb a tree by the creek and think about what animals live there. Or just walk down the street and play a game of shadows. Every moment outside engaging in nature, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, is the window of opportunity to share so many more wonderful things about our world and it’s environment.

Walking with your children in nature…it’s fun!

STRAIGHT TEETH THE NATURAL WAY! Today about 80% of Australian children are growing up with crooked teeth. This is evidence of a craniofacial dystrophy (the poor development of the craniofacial structures). The craniofacial structures develop correctly only when children have: • lips together at rest • the tongue resting in the roof of the mouth • breathing through the nose (not the mouth!) • no lip or cheek movement on the subconscious swallow. Craniofacial dystrophy can be evident in the first years of life and can be treated at that age. It is best treated in the growing child, with improvements in tooth position, jaw size, jaw relationship and the airway a consequence of improved craniofacial development. Traditional orthodontic methods such as braces and extractions focus on moving teeth without regard for the underlying cause – it is not surprising that the vast majority of orthodontic treatment relapses without lifetime retention. The poor muscle and breathing patterns that originally caused the teeth to become ’crooked’ put the teeth back into that position when the retainers are no longer worn. Most orthodontic patients stop wearing retainers and see their tooth position relapse. Dr John Flutter (BDS London Dental Surgeon) provides early intervention treatment options for children that improve the underlying cause of ‘crooked teeth’ to attain stable results. This is called Myobrace Therapy. It treats children while they are still growing in order to improve cranial and jaw development. Treatment involves correcting the poor oral habits that impact negatively on the development of the face, jaws and teeth, such as mouth breathing and swallowing incorrectly. A Myobrace is a functional appliance that retrains the muscles of the lips and tongue. It is worn for an hour a day as well as all night during sleep. This is done in combination with various exercises to help retrain the muscle patterns of the tongue and lips, which are ultimately responsible for the position of the teeth. Another unique aspect of treatment is the incorporation of the ‘Breathing Retraining Programme’. Not only does breathing play an important role in the development of your child’s jaw – it also offers a world of health benefits that go beyond straight teeth! Overall this gives a holistic and less invasive approach to orthodontic treatment. The goal is to create room for all of the teeth to come into alignment, not extract them! Every child has the potential to grow straight teeth! PHONE 07 3852 3555 www.jfdental.com.au

BLACKBOARD HOUSE This easy DIY cardboard house can be transformed into something new every day these holidays — whatever your child can imagine and draw. It’s a blackboard house, but there’s no chalkboard paint involved. In fact it’s made with stuff you might have lying around the house. Our blackboard house could be a haunted house, a fire station, a school, a house with party decorations or anything else your kids and their toys can imagine.

18

THINGS YOU NEED • • • • • • •

Cardboard cartons Stanley knife (adults only) Glue to attach roof Cloth or duct tape Chalk pens (available from stationery and craft stores) Wet Ones or baby wipes Paper towel

www.kidsonthecoast.com.au | www.kidsinthecitymagazine.com.au

HOW TO MAKE... STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

Gather some cardboard boxes. Get your child to plan the design of the house then help them to assemble the boxes and cut windows and doors through them to make a basic house. Cut some more cardboard to create floors for inside your house.

A HAUNTED HOUSE...

Cover the cardboard house with cloth or duct tape — you can buy it from the hardware store. We used black but it comes in many colours. Make sure that your strips overlap slightly and press to make sure they are stuck on securely. Now your child can draw on the house with chalk pens wherever you have covered with duct tape. When you want to change the design, simply wipe off the chalk pen with a ‘Wet One’ or baby wipe and dry with some paper towel.

A LOVELY MANSION...

Now gather your toys and play with your blackboard house. If you leave the chalk pen drawings on for a long time, they will be hard to remove so remember to clean off your drawings at the end of each day’s play. Your blackboard house won’t last forever but you can make MacGyver style running repairs with extra duct tape to extend its life.

A HOSPITAL...

This craft comes from Leonie at Lotta Magazine, a locally produced ad-free kids magazine filled with ideas for school holiday fun. You can find hundreds more great kids art and craft ideas in their magazine issues and on their blog at www.lottamagazine.com

WINTER BLUES? TAKE TO THE WATER AND CHECK OUT THE WHALES! Grey nomads are not the only ones heading up the coast each winter in search of warmer weather. And while the caravan trek is a phenomenon of recent years, the other migration has been played out for thousands of generations as every year humpback whales make the journey from their summer home in the Antarctic to the subtropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef. For a really memorable experience it is hard to beat going to sea on a whale watching boat like Whale One from Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Cruises run between June & November and offer a 100% money back guarantee. Whale One is a 20m catamaran powered by twin diesel engines for a cruising speed of over 18 knots. This section of coast, an hour’s drive north of Brisbane, has the happy coincidence of warm winter weather and a seemingly endless line of whales heading north from the frozen Antarctic to the warm waters around the Whitsunday Islands and beyond and then returning as summer comes on. It has been estimated that up to 5000 whales make the 2500km journey up the east coast of Australia each year with numbers increasing steadily since whaling was abandoned in the ‘60s. Other southern hemisphere whale populations follow Australia’s west coast as well as other continents, and the northern populations make similar journeys north from the Arctic during their winter. The migration is based around the whale’s mating and breeding season with calves born in the warmer water where they have time to build up blubber reserves to protect them from the cold before returning to the food rich seas around the southern ice shelf. At birth the babies are 5m long, and with a daily supply of 600l of fat rich milk they gain weight quickly. Experience whale watching with the experts on Whale One.
