Hey guys it’s Shayna! I am back with some very cool and awesome fashion advice from another teen! I recently interviewed 15 year old Kylee Tim from Sacramento, California. She is super trendy and has some really great advice for you guys! She shares her opinion about everything from her style on jewelry to shoes and summer trends compared to winter, and so much more! She is definitely a trendsetter with a great attitude towards fashion. This fashionista makes sure she never misses a trend! Kylee shares with us her thoughts on fashion magazines, and which celebrities make a huge impact on her fashion life. Continue reading to see from a teen’s view what’s in and out for this season! XOXO Shayna

Kylee Tim, age: 15 Sacramento, CA

What is your favorite style to wear? I like trendy bohemian style pieces. Do your outfits differ from weekdays and weekends? Since it’s summer, it really just depends on what I’m doing that day! What are your summer outfits like? I mostly wear denim shorts with a cute

tank or blouse, but I’m also a huge fan of wearing dresses! Do you wear specific colors in your outfits in the summer? I try to go for brighter colors and more white in the summer. What is your favorite brand? This is a tough one, but I would say Abercrombie & Fitch. Their style has become a lot different recently than their previous classic style they had for years. It’s much more trendy now. How often do you shop? Too much! Haha. Where do you shop? Abercrombie & Fitch, PacSun, Brandy Melville, American Eagle, and Hollister. When you go shopping do you pick the first thing you see or do you shop around? I like to shop around.

Who inspires you with your style and fashion choices? I am obsessed with pinterest and get a lot of fashion inspiration from there. I also love Aspyn Ovard’s style!! She’s literally my favorite person ever. Do you watch fashion shows, read fashion magazines and/or rely on celebrities for your fashion choices? I watch a lot of YouTube videos, and would say most of my fashion choices come from there.

How would you describe your style? I would say my style is slightly boho.

Do friends help with your fashion choices or are you a trend setter? I’d say I’m somewhere in the middle.

In three words how would you describe your sense of style? Boho, girly, on trend.

Is your winter style different from you summer style? Yes!

Do your shoes determine your outfit or vice versa? It depends! Sometimes I really want to wear some specific shoes so I base my outfit around them.

Do you prefer you winter clothes better then summer clothes? I like summer a lot better, I feel like winter can get really repetitive just wearing jeans and sweaters over and over.

Do you wear jewelry with all your outfits or no? Not all the time, but I try to when I remember. Do you base your makeup colors off your outfit? I usually wear pretty neutral makeup that goes with anything. Do you have one outfit that you wear all the time? Not really!

Do you prefer jeans or leggings? Jeans. Do you wear heels when you go out? Nope, I’m already 5 foot 9 so I don’t really need them, haha. What advice do you give to other fashionistas’ like you? Don’t be afraid to be bold and wear something out of the box! It’s a Kidsworld | 29

SWIMMING IN STYLE Take the plunge and dive in to discover the latest news in children’s swimwear!

—Text and photography by Janet A. Jacobs

T

houghts about swimming usually bring up happy memories of good times: hot summer days at the beach or swim club; a cool dip in the lake at the mountains or at summer camp; winter cruise vacations to tropical islands; or swim lessons at the local YMCA. Swimming is more than a seasonal pastime; it’s a dynamic year-round activity, particularly for youngsters and for children’s swimwear designers, manufacturers and marketers. Kid’s swimwear makers seem to have lots of fun with their wildly creative collections, yet they face a unique set of challenges. Although styling can closely follow the most current trends in adult swim fashion, kid’s swimsuits must be modestly child-appropriate and comfortable both in and out of the water. It’s a Kidsworld chats with four industry experts to find out what makes their companies stand out in this highly competitive niche market. Hailing from backgrounds as diverse as Venezuela, Brazil, France and the USA, each brand’s spokesperson brings an original point of view and distinctive vision to their line.

Please give a brief history about your company. FRANCESE: In Mocean has been in the swim business for twenty five years. We specialize in our extensive list of national brands as well as private label programs for just about every major retailer out there. Years before other companies turned to Asia for production, In Mocean was the well-established pioneer in the region. Our long term relationships with swimwear manufacturing specialists are unsurpassed, as are the benefits offered by our offices overseas. We have a direct link to the area’s best factories as well as our own factories, technology, fabrics, designers, quality value and record setting delivery. In Mocean is a complete swimwear company from infants to plus size adults. Our in-house brands are Angel Beach, Catalina, Cole of California and Anne Cole. We do private label programs for just about every major retailer in the market place. Approximately 20% of the company’s sales are done in children’s swimwear. DRANOFF: Planet Sea was founded in the year 2000 when I moved from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Miami. It is a children’s swimwear line for infants, girls and boys size 2-12 – all manufactured in Brazil. KHORIATY: We launched Pacific Rainbow for the Spring/Summer 2016 collection; it’s a kids and teenagers swimsuits collection, which we offer from size 2 years old to 18. HIRSHBEIN: Le Club has been in business for three years. Before Le Club, I had previously been in the business of resorts. My partner had experience with fabric mills in South America. We saw that there was a niche in boys and men’s fashion, for something special in the swim market, done with care. How is the kid’s swimwear business now? How has it changed over the years and what changes do you anticipate in the future? FRANCESE: The kid’s business has definitely changed over the past two seasons. The 7-16 girls want fashion! She is looking for the latest trends and silhouettes that the junior girl is wearing. Less basic and more fashion! With new trends comes change, it’s about keeping up with the trends and putting total trust in your designers. DRANOFF: The kid’s swimwear business is growing every year. The moms are getting more concerned about sun protection, LE CLUB ORIGINAL so we developed many trendy styles

like rash guards and cover ups with laser-cut details, all with UPF50+ protection that will keep kids looking stylish and sunburn-free. In the future I see resort wear as being part of the summer wardrobe, so the cover ups become like summer dresses that can go to the beach, pool and play dates. Planet Sea flip-flops are so cute and comfortable that kids are wearing Pacific Rainbow them to parties! We are applying crystal mesh in heart shapes, princess crown, bows, etc. KHORIATY: For us this business is quite new, so as far as we are concerned, we can say that we are very happy with the beginning of this story and we have great hopes for the future. HIRSHBEIN: The kid’s swimwear business is changing and evolving. Mothers are looking for something really different—a new look, something more. There’s a lot of emphasis on fashion, to be cool and to be fun. Color wise, we’re not about typical blues. We introduced coral last year and it was a best seller.

For us kids need comfort and quality as we adults do.

Where do you sell your line? FEANCESE: Our Angel Beach line is sold in department stores, specialty stores, on the internet, and beach stores. 34 | It’s a Kidsworld

Our private label programs are sold in the largest chain stores throughout the USA, Canada and Europe. DRANOFF: I sell to boutiques, department stores, resorts, online retailers, swimwear shops and a few catalogue companies. KHORIATY: We have twenty six sales points, concept stores for kids and department stores, mostly in Europe. We also a beautiful online store in the USA called shopbienbien. com, and we are expanding our markets for Spring/ Summer 2017. HIRSHBEIN: We are very proud to be in Bloomingdales. That’s our biggest achievement… I feel selling in Bloomindales means we’re doing something good! We also sell to specialty stores and resort stores such as Fountain Bleu. We have excellent prices so we can sell to some flash event sites, but we’re very selective. We have a great relationship with our buyers and they often ask me for advice. What are the current most popular trends for kid’s swimwear? FRANCESE: Our most popular current trends are Ethnic, Boho and crochet. Coral and mint have been best-selling colors. For prints: chevrons, tie-dyes, engineered prints, paisley and flamingos. As for styles, any silhouette with a flounce, a high neck, anything with ruffles. DRANOFF: The trendiest styles for this season are high neck tankinis and off-the-shoulder cover ups. Digital prints, bright colors and metallic details are important.

KHORIATY: Our customers love our monokinis for girls, in flashy colors, and shorts for boys in darker colors. We do not use any prints. HIRSHBEIN: Since I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, there is naturally some Latin influence in our designs. Our prints are very special. We try to go out of the typical nautical looks, and we have prints of coconuts, papyrus, guavas, and sunglasses…motifs that capture the essence of Latin culture. What has been the biggest trend for summer 2016? FRANCESE: Crochet, flounces and laser cut designs. DRANOFF: The biggest trend for 2016 has been color-block bikinis in bright pink and green with black trim. KHORIATY: For Spring/Summer 2016 it was our monotone LAURA which refers to the 80’s. HIRSHBEIN: Our customer loves the neon colors! We introduced neons last year and everybody went crazy for them. We’ll maintain them in our collection this year, and we try to introduce a new color each year. What will be the most important trends for summer 2017? FRANCESE: Anything strappy! Macramé details, printed crochet, ethnic and Boho looks. DRANOFF: The 2017 collection features digital prints, and laser technology which allows for asymmetrical cuts and cool designs like cut-out flowers, hearts and anchors.

KHORIATY: For Spring/Summer 2017 we are expecting to do very well with the retro bikini. HIRSHBEIN: This summer everything’s about texture and shine in fabric. We first saw it happening in Italy for men. It has a plastic look and a great feel. We will continue using these fabrics for 2017. Anything you’d like to add? DRANOFF: Our swimsuits, cover-ups and flip-flops are hand-made by women living in cooperatives in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, which boosts the economic opportunities for families enduring socio-economic challenges. I travel to the production sites each year to greet the artisans, and ensure the safety standards of the facilities and quality of the goods. KHORIATY: For us kids need comfort and quality as we adults do. We are very careful with the quality of fabrics, they have to be soft and dry fast. The finishes are super important as well, the lining, elastics, all have to be comfy. HIRSHBEIN: Our brand is a family brand. It’s a father and son look, although some of the prints are designed especially for kids. We have a “wet print” that looks like a solid color…when the fabric gets wet, suddenly a print appears. It’s different and fun. My son Sammy is our model for photo shoots. He does it to help me, and to have fun. Fun is the key word to describe Le Club! It’s a Kidsworld | 35

S

tart the new season with a selective overview of looks from the best international collections, seen at: Pitti Bimbo, Florence; Playtime, Paris; Kid, Paris; FIMI, Madrid and Kleine Fabriek, Amsterdam. Pitti Immagine Bimbo got the fashion wheel rolling in style at the 83rd edition of this most important kid’s wear trade show. Always innovative, and always a surprise with new events, programs, show layouts and art installations, there’s no better place than Pitti Bimbo to get inspired by cutting edge kid’s fashion. The Kid Fizz section of the show, located directly behind the main entrance, had a lively feel enhanced by open stands and the friendly interaction of the creative companies in this section. In the main pavilion of Pitti Bimbo many wellknown Italian companies showcased elegant dresses and near-couture creations. The Quis Quis collection was richly designed and exquisitely executed, presenting groups such as one inspired by painted porcelain tea cups. Intricate lace and embroideries, “egg shell” textured fabrics and raffia trim were some of the special touches to this exceptional line. Ermanno Scervino featured a pretty robin’s eggblue palette and light denim styles, made even more airy by embroidered eyelet patterns. Lightly colored or white sheer fabrics gave ethereal elegance to dresses, such as Mimisol’s frothy balletinspired organza dress. Mimisol’s giant camellias painted on white sheath dress celebrated a joyful welcome to spring. Because the world of trade shows is ever-evolving, one must continuously adapt to shifts and changes in the milieu. As some of the long established Italian lines regrettably chose to show 40 | It’s a Kidsworld

their collections elsewhere PARADE this season, there was MODE a noticeable increase at Pitti Bimbo of many wonderful companies from France. The Christian Lacroix children’s line was expertly styled by a former Dior designer. Delicately detailed botanical floral prints used for baby dresses were some of the prettiest patterns of the season. Charabia featured dresses made of ribbon-like bands on sheer organza, and a cut-out embroidery white dress with poufy pink “carnations” at the shoulder. Billieblush and brother brand Billiebrandt were among the most popular and original collections at the show. Their fresh and witty designs featured themes of Cuba, with Toucans driving vintage cars on tee shirts, and American cowboys and Indian motifs for boys. Pom-pom trim was popular throughout the show, with Mexico rivalling Cuba as the most “in” travel destination theme seen on colorful tropical attire. A strong group of Dutch companies exhibited at Pitti for the first time, including NoNo, Mood Street , Kidz Art and Tumble ‘n Dry . These highly creative, more casual brands brought a big dose of quirky fun from the Netherlands to Florence. In Paris the following weekend, Playtime attracted an impressively i n t e r n a t i o n a l g ro u p o f exhibitors to this increasingly diverse show. Val Max, a classic Italian company, showed lovely collections including a sweet “Candy Wonderland”group with playful prints in sugary pastels, as well as an attractive boy’s line featuring clean-cut classics with a fashion twist. Portugal’s Knot has established itself as a mustsee collection which maintains a consistently high level of quality and design. This season’s theme was the natural elements: earth, air, fire and water. Tonal blue striped chambray fabric

TrendSpot represented the sea while a big cactus print suggested earth. Favorite Dutch lines such as Kidscase and Lebig were a nice addition to Playtime Paris, while Senorita Lemoniez represented the best of Spanish design with another superb, sophisticated collection. Several young companies from Eastern Europe added a fresh point of view from parts of the world not yet well known for fashion. Parade Mode, from Latvia, showed a very pretty and original collection that included delicate hand-sewn details as embroideries and finished seams. Kid-show held an alternate exhibition in Paris at the same time as Playtime. This show is located in a new venue each season, always in an architecturally interesting locale with just the right ambience. The concept of this still new show is to feature a carefully selected group of exhibitors in an event that’s part showroom, part trade show. Spacious boutique-like settings and open stands allow for a more personal viewing experience, with the brands given a nice chance to stand out and shine. This season saw a new date and format for the Kleine Fabriek show in Amsterdam. The Dutch kid’s show was held at the same time and place as the adult show Modefabriek. Stands were arranged in a circular pattern instead of linear aisles, intended to make a better traffic flow and more focus on the products. Always amazing collections by Oilily, Jottum, WILD and others made the most of the new setting to present highly artistic collections that help make Kleine Fabriek a show not to be missed.

Swimwear Special

Pate de Sable has enjoyed twenty-five years as a top French swimwear line. A striking two-piece suit paired an ombré indigo top with brightly striped bottom, trimmed with colorful plastic bands.

Sales of swimsuits are soaring this season. Several companies that do exclusively swim-related attire had some of the busiest stands at the trade shows, while many sportswear lines included a segment of swimsuits related to their collections. From ultra-frilly to sleek and sporty, there’s a swimsuit special enough to entice everyone into the water.

José Varon Bano showcased a refreshing group on the runway at FIMI, featuring big white dots on aqua ground. The print was seen on ruffled oneshoulder suit with matching beach bag and on swim shorts for boys.

The wildly popular Seleni Action line attracts a loyal worldwide following. Their unmistakable swimsuit designs specialize in beautifully hand-crafted embellishments such as fabric flowers, which also decorate beach towels, straw bags, hats and flip-flops.

Founded in Portofino, Italy in 1962, Zeybra’s well established swimsuit brand is known for their highly original prints. Designs for boys and men’s suits are especially eyecatching, featuring uniquely rendered print motifs of fish, motorcycles and animals.

The French sportswear line Nice Things Mini began their kid’s collection five years ago. They’ve now expanded to include swimsuits, using the same winningly understated styling and artistic prints. It’s a Kidsworld | 43

Histoire de Plage

What better place to get rested, re-charged and ready for the latest round of international kid’s wear shows than in the stunningly scenic South of France? The unsurpassed beauty of the region draws a seasonal international crowd, who joins local residents for idyllic days of sunning, swimming, strolling and of course shopping! Several stores in St. Tropez offer tempting merchandise for kids, perfectly suited for the easy-going chic style of this gem of a seaside city. Histoire de Plage features a range of colorful beach essentials from swimsuits, cover-ups, towels and quilted beach mats, to cool cotton shirts and the distinctive, popular St. Tropez style straw hat. The prints featured on store swimwear are specifically designed for the Histoire de Plage collection. At La Cabane d’Anoé, the store’s exclusive merchandise is labeled with logos of simply sketched wooden cabins. These graphics are also seen on tee shirts and store displays. Gauzy cotton dresses colored in a sun-washed palette are displayed on strung nautical rope lines, while color-coordinated tee shirts are invitingly piled on a big wooden table.

The lovely boutique Numaé offers a soothing oasis from the sun and crowds of St. Tropez. Most items in the store are softly colored in white, pale gray, pale pink and natural. There’s even a little garden room with pillows where parents and kids can relax. The Numaé collection began ten years ago when founder Manuelle Schmite designed a new item for changing babies, called a ni d’ange (bed of angels). She next added cashmere blankets, followed by swaddle cloths and sleeping bags. The full collection now offers all items for babies including home goods, and clothes for newborns to size six years. There are three Numaé stores in Paris and plans to expand to other regions.

Losan

Miffy the bunny

Moving on to Florence, Italy for the Pitti Bimbo show, the fun feeling of sea, sand and sun continues. This season’s display at Pitti incorporated “Lucky Numbers” with bold nautical flags seen billowing in the breeze. On the show’s opening day visitors were welcomed with a rousing runway show from a group of key Spanish brands, including Boboli, Losan, Mayoral, Desigual and others. The runway settings decorated with straw thatched huts, palm trees, sand and surfboards complemented the casual, brightly colored summer attire.

Seen throughout Pitti Bimbo was a whimsical homage to Dutch artist Dick Bruna’s iconic Miffy the Bunny. Cardboard cut-outs and “life-size” Miffy dolls were dressed in designer ensembles from top European brands, including Mimisol, Twin Set, Ermanno Scervino, Iceberg and more. Each designer’s aesthetic was carefully carried out in all details including accessories. This exhibit was a delightful merging of art and fashion, and even aided a good cause: profits from Miffy designer tee shirts were donated to a charity that helps children in need.

In Paris for Playtime and Kid shows, there were several opportunities to enjoy fashion-inspired art exhibitions. A retrospect about “Le Bikini” chronicled an amusing history of the famous swimsuit. And at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, record-breaking crowds (including myself) waited in long lines to see the amazingly comprehensive Barbie exhibition, a presentation well worth the wait. Room after room displayed thousands of Barbie dolls depicting the sixty-plus years of her life, all set in a variety of ingenious displays with unmistakable French flair. A red pant-suited Barbie campaigned for Barbie as President of the United States. What an excellent and timely idea!
