Baseball “America’s National Pastime Baseball has been played in some form since the mid-1800s. Children have been playing this sport anywhere a group of kids can pick up a stick and ball. As the sport grew in popularity, so did the opportunity for kids to play organized ball. Today, millions of kids all over the world play the game of baseball. Baseball was first played at the school level as early as the 1850s. At first more in boarding schools and then in 1859, Worchester High School in Maine is said to be the first public school to compete against outside teams. High Schools around the nation began forming baseball teams throughout the 1870s. The American Legion Baseball (an organization that supports war veterans) branched out to sponsor a youth baseball program in 1925. It is the oldest baseball program for teens in the United States. In 1939, Little League Baseball was organized to allow boys, not yet old enough to play ball for the American Legion, a chance to learn the game. The first Little League was played on June 6, 1939. It was between Lundy Lumber and Lycoming Dairy. Lundy Lumber won that game 23-8. Little League today is played by boys girls between 5 and 18 years old. It is the largest organized youth sports program in the world.

John F. Kennedy 35th President, 1961-1963

John Fitzgerald “Jack Kennedy (sometimes called J.F.K.), was the second of nine children born on May 29, 1917 in Massachusetts. He grew up in a wealthy, Catholic, Irish American family who had a strong political background. He loved sports like swimming, sailing, tennis and playing touch football with this brothers. He went to boarding school in Connecticut and went to college at Harvard University. Kennedy joined the Navy in 1940 after graduating. During World War II, he was in charge of a patrol boat called the PT-109. The boat was attacked by a Japanese ship and even though he was hurt, he was able to rescue six of his crew members. For this, he received several medals. After the war, he became a politician. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1946, he served there until he was elected to the Senate in 1952. In 1953, Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier. They had three children. In 1954, Kennedy had back surgery and during his recovery, he wrote a book called Profiles in Courage about famous Senators. Kennedy received a Pulitzer Prize for that book in 1957. In 1960, J.F.K. ran for president against Republican Richard Nixon. He won and became the first Catholic president of the United States as well as the youngest at only 43 years old. His Inaugural Address contained these famous words: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. Major Events While in Office During his time as president, Kennedy worked to end racial segregation. He also proposed new ways to improve civil rights. The Peace Corps was created where American volunteers are sent to different countries to provide assistance to those in need. Kennedy also wanted to learn more about the universe through his support of space exploration. His economic programs launched the United States on its longest sustained expansion since WWII. Some of the greatest challenges President Kennedy faced was the fight against communism. He saw the failed invasion of communist Cuba called the “Bay of Pigs in 1961. The next year, he was in a stand-off with the leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev. The Soviet Union (the largest communist nation) set up nuclear missile bases in Cuba. President Kennedy found out about their plan and took action to stop it. In October 1962, he was able to resolve what we now call the Cuban Missile Crisis. His time as president was cut short as on November 22, 1963, he was shot in Dallas, Texas while riding in a parade. The doctors could not save him. His funeral was on television and the entire nation mourned for him.

Interesting Facts: • N.A.S.A.’s Launch Operations Center in Florida was renamed John F. Kennedy Space Center in November 1963. • New York’s International Airport, Idlewild was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1963. • The Kennedy half dollar coin was issued in 1964. • He was one of only two American presidents buried at Arlington National Cemetary. • J.F.K. was the first American president to hold a press conference on television. • He was the fourth president to be assassinated. • He wore special shoes because his right leg was 3/4 of an inch longer than his left. • JFK, an avid reader, was a big fan of James Bond and read Ian Fleming's books. He liked sitting on his rocking chair while in the White House.

Rabbits! The rabbit is characterized by its long ears, long legs, large hind feet and a short bushy tail. Don’t get them confused with hares! Hares have longer ears, are larger in size, run faster and their young are born with fur and open eyes. Rabbit babies are born with no fur and are blind! Their fur can range from spotted patterns, white to brown, grey and black. They are known for their fast birthing rate and do not mate for life. Wild rabbits are ground dwellers that can live in many environments all over the world. Most are found in forests and live underground in burrows or in dense cover. The rabbit tends to stay in the area of their safe hiding place. If they see a predator, they will thump their hind feet in warning to the others. A rabbit’s large eyes provide a nearly circular field of vision that allows them to detect motion and helps them avoid predators. They also have the ability to detect odors and communicate through their sense of smell. Wild rabbits are herbivores grazing on grasses, clover and dandelions, etc. There are many different breeds of rabbits. Rabbits are farmed for many different reasons. They can be raised for meat, for their fur, for sport and for pets. In Europe, South America, North America, parts of the Middle East and China, they are a meat source of high quality protein. Rabbit meat is leaner than beef, pork and

chicken and cooked most often the same way chicken is. Rabbit fur can be used for clothing and accessories. Some also spin rabbit fur and use it for knitting. In this case, the longer the fur is better! This animal fur is combed and plucked from the rabbit. Rabbits are also raised as pets. Pet rabbits are kept in hutches COLOR or in homes. Rabbits ME! can be trained to use a litter box and can learn to come when called. Their diet consists of pellets, hay and fresh vegetables. Some famous rabbits are Br’er Rabbit, Bugs Bunny and let’s not forget the Easter Bunny!

Birds of Easter Island The Sooty Tern is a seabird of the tropical oceans. It is also called the Wideawake Tern which refers to the continual calls (sounds like kerwack-a-wack) produced by a colony of these birds. When Polynesian seafarers went on their long voyages, they would find these birds in astounding numbers. The sooty tern can live up to 32 years! It is a large bird that is 1314 inches long with a wingspan of approximately 36 inches. Their tail is deeply forked and has dark black underparts with some white. The terns legs and bill are black. The sooty tern breeds in colonies on rocky or coral islands. It makes its nest in a ground scrape or hole and lays one to three eggs. It feeds by picking fish from the water surface. They rarely come to land except to breed. It can stay out to sea - either by soaring or floating on the water - for three to ten years! Sooty terns had a role in Easter Island history. This species and the Grey-backed tern are together known as manutara. They played an important role in the tangata manu (birdman) ritual. Whichever champion could retreive the first manutara egg from Motu Nui islet, would become that year’s tangata manu. His clan would receive prime access to resources, especially seabird eggs.

The Great Frigatebird is a seabird that is lightly built but large. It’s up to 41” long with mostly black plumage. It has long pointed wings of 8090” wide and long forked tails. The female is larger than the adult male and has a white throat and breast. The males scapular feathers have a purple green sheen. During the breeding season, the male is able to inflate its red pouch to attract females. The Great Frigatebird makes gobbling noises like a turkey. The frigate weighs only up to four pounds! Their light body weight to wing span ratio allows them to soar and fly extremely well in great control. Frigatebirds routinely steal food from other birds by grabbing them by their tail feathers and shaking them until they regurgitate their food. They are, however, capable of capturing their own prey. Because they have a small oil gland and very little waterproofing in their wings, frigatebirds cannot dive in the water and must instead rely on their aerobatics to snatch flying fish out of the air. Frigatebirds do not swim, can’t walk well and cannot take off from a flat surface. They are essentially aerial birds and are able to stay aloft for more than a week landing only to roost or breed on trees or cliffs.

Insect or Spider? Do you know the difference? Many people think of insects and spiders as just creepy, crawly things and don’t think about the differences between them. They do look similar as they both lack a backbone, but have an exoskeleton (their skeleton is on the outside of the body, rather than inside). They also both lay eggs. However, knowing the differences between spiders and insects can help you tell them apart. To begin with, spiders and insects are from two different families. Spiders belong to the Arachnid (uh-rak-nid) family and insects are members of the Insect family. Insects have a distinct three part body consisting of a head, thorax and abdomen, three pairs of jointed legs (total of six), compound eyes, two antennae and many have wings. Insects breathe through holes called spiracles, and there are over a million species.

Spiders have two part bodies consisting of a combined head and thorax known as the cephalothorox and an abdomen. They also have eight jointed legs, simple eyes, piercing jaws and can make silk thread for spinning spider webs. Spiders also cannot fly. Arachnids are agressive predators. They breathe air through booklungs which are gill-like structures. Now you know the difference!

IS YOUR CHILD A PERFECTIONIST? Instead...teach them how to be perfect

h) AM ALWAYS 0%2&%#4 AT THE %.$ v You might be a little shocked by this but - Don’t turn them into perfectionists! This is very difďŹ cult to do. It is all our fault. In today’s world we push our kids too hard too early and expect them to be perfect. We tell them we do not expect them to be perfect but yet we do not let them make mistakes or get things wrong. It may age me a little but when I was a kindergartener all I had to do was drink milk, take naps and play. Today if a kindergartener does not already know how to read, spell their name and count, they are behind. Not too long ago child development experts called the ages seven and below the “pre-academicâ€? stage of life. Too early in children’s lives they cease being allowed to make mistakes. When they are in school their score or grade is docked with each mistake. When they miss the ball when batting in T-ball or miss catching a ball everyone goes “ohâ€? and “ahâ€?, or worse yet, laughs. Wanting to be perfect is good, but being a perfectionist is not. This is where the roots of shyness can be found. What are some signs that your child is developing into a perfectionist? If your child hesitates before doing most things. If they say “I can’tâ€? even before they try. If your child wants to quit the ďŹ rst time something gets hard. If they do not want to turn in their homework because they are afraid it is not perfect. If they say “I am not ready yetâ€? or “Can I watch ďŹ rst?â€? If they want to quit something when they feel they do not get good enough fast enough. As they get older they typically suffer from high levels of anxiety and fear. The key at this stage is to reward “effortâ€?

and not “resultsâ€?. Action Tip: Again the ďŹ rst thing to do is just NOTICE. Just become much more aware of their behaviors that reinforce perfectionism. Then initially start by recognizing, praising and rewarding effort over results. Here is one of the most powerful concepts I have learned about success - “Do not expect to be perfect at the start...spend your time and energy being perfect at the END!â€? Did you know that when the Apollo spacecraft headed for the moon they were off course almost the entire time? They would have to change course and correct all along the way. But in the end they would land within a few hundred yards from the targeted landing spot! That would be like us throw a rock 50 yards and getting it in a small bucket! If NASA and the Astronauts were perfectionists they would have never left the ground. They only concentrated on being perfect at the end. Perfectionists rarely start anything and quit at the ďŹ rst sign of failure. So teach and reward your child for being a quick, strong starter and that the only thing that really counts is their success at the “end!â€? The best way is to model it for them. If you would like to learn more or see the whole report just go to the “Free Parenting Reportâ€? button near the top of our new website www.ohanakarate.com! ‘Til next time!
