What Is Gravity? The Earth tries to pull everything down towards its center. This pull is called the force of gravity (the invisible force). When you lift things up you have to pull against gravity. If you drop a pencil, gravity pulls it to Earth. If you rest the pencil’s mid-point on your finger, gravity will pull down equally on both sides of the pencil and it will balance in the air. Did you know that there is no gravity in space? This is why astronauts float around in their spaceships. Did you know that there is gravity on the Moon? The gravity on the Moon is much weaker than the gravity that we have here on Earth. This is why moon walking for astronauts is very difficult. Gravity or gravitational forces happen when one object attracts another. When the molecules of one object pull on the molecules of another object, that is gravity. It's like the Earth pulling on you and keeping you on the ground. That pull is gravity at work. Every object in the universe that has mass has a gravitational pull or a gravitational force. Even you have gravity, but when you compare your mass to the mass of the Earth, your gravitational pull isn't very big. When the Earth spins and gravity pulls on the clouds, weather can be affected. The Earth's gravity even holds the atmosphere close to our surface. Smaller planets that have low gravity or no magnetic field cannot maintain an atmosphere. Obviously, gravity is very important on Earth. The Earth's gravity keeps our planet orbiting the Sun, and the Sun's gravity pulls on us. The gravity of other planets also have an affect our orbit. The moon's gravity pulls on the Earth and makes the tides rise and fall every day. As the moon passes over the ocean, there is a swell in the sea level. As the moon passes to the other side of the planet, the swell occurs there. The Earth always has the same pull on every object. If you drop an acorn or a piano, they will fall at the same speed. The Earth's gravity accelerates objects when they fall. It constantly pulls and objects constantly speed up. But what keeps the Moon from falling into the Earth if all of this gravity is so strong? The answer is that the moon is revolving around the Earth. Those revolutions (about once a month) create a force that makes the Moon want to spin off into space. The Earth's gravity holds it in orbit. Think about holding a ball on a string and spinning in a circle. If you were to cut that string, the ball would fly off. That string is like the Earth's gravity.

Try This Gravity Experiment! Materials you will need: • Small rubber ball • Flat table top surface • Medium size canning jar (wide mouth) or a jar with a lip/neck (large mayonnaise jar) Now see if you can lift the ball up from the table top without touching the ball or tipping over the jar. Were you able to do it? Steps: 1. Place the ball on top of the table 2. Place the jar over the ball so that the ball is inside the mouth of the canning jar. 3. Start spinning the jar around in a circular motion (keeping it on the table). 4. Once the ball starts spinning inside the jar lift it from the table top. 5. The ball is lifted from the table and will continue to spin inside the jar until it loses is speed. This works because the ball spinning inside the jar is trying to escape but the jar itself forces the ball to stay inside the wall of the jar. Due to the force of the spin or speed the ball will continue to spin until it loses its speed and gravity will pull it back to earth and the ball will fall from the jar.

Did you know that your nails have a job to do? The surface of your nails, helps to protect the tips of your fingers and toes! Plus they help you scratch and pick things up! Did you know that babies have fingernails and toenails before they are born? Well groomed nails also help a person look their best. Let’s learn about what nails are. Nails are made of keratin. This is the same thing your body uses to create hair and the top layer of your skin. Nails grow where you have a U shaped cuticle on your fingers and toes. The cuticle’s job is to help protect the new nail as it grows out from the nail root. Hidden under the cuticle is the nail root. When the cells at the root of the nail grow, the new nail cells push out the old nail cells. The old cells flatten and harden because of the keratin - a protein that is made by these cells. The nail slides along the nail bed which is the flat surface below the nail. The nail bed sits on top of tiny blood

vessels that feed it and that’s what gives your nails their pink color. Nails grow very slowly. They grow about one tenth of an inch each month so it can take 3 to 6 months to completely replace a nail. You may need an adult to help you trim your fingernails and toenails. Fingernails should be trimmed straight across and slightly rounded at the top. Toenails don’t grow as fast as fingernails so they don’t need to be trimmed as often. They should also be trimmed straight across. Having well groomed nails can keep you from biting or picking at them - which can lead to infections. Not a good habit to get into! When you go to the doctor for a check up, they often take a look at your nails during your checkup. Fingernails provide good clues to your health. When the doctor presses your nails, they are checking your blood circulation. The doctor may find changes associated with skin problems, lung disease, anemia and other medical conditions. A good tip is to regularly use hand lotion to help moisturize your nails. Your fingernails and toenails need moisturizer too! When they dry out it can cause cracking, breaking and peeling. We can prevent that from happening in most cases.

CENTRAL ELEMENTARY STUDENTS HAD FUN CELEBRATING MARCH IS READING MONTH

Our Theme was “Camp Central Read S’more!.” All of the special reading activities were related to our school-wide camping theme. We started the month with a birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss and birthday donuts. Students read with stuffed animals, made class trail mix to enjoy while reading, and read with buddy classrooms. The students also enjoyed reading with flashlights! We had a lot of fun celebrating reading together!

St. Rose of Lima School has remained in school during the health crisis. However, it is not in a traditional way. Teachers are creating online lessons and sending home weekly instructional packets. We have seen some incredible things from our students that are above and beyond the lessons we prepared! One family held their own St. Patrick’s Day Parade in their backyard. A few built volcanoes and observed the lava flow. The school’s administrative assistant sang and recorded a favorite song from a school mass; she uploaded it to Facebook. One parent is working on the history of the Upper Peninsula and sharing information in a PowerPoint. Another created luminary prayer bags for families to write a prayer and leave on the steps of the church. Families and staff communicate daily through emails and our parent page on Facebook. We share ideas, pictures, and offer quick “hellos” to each other. Yes, the time is difficult, but the communities within Barry County continue to amaze us all in their actions and creative ways to stay connected. We are all one family in Christ! While the future of the school year is uncertain, the teachers continue to work diligently to prepare packets that are rich in academic standards to continue to engage our children during this unprecedented time.

Do You Know These Facts About The Sun? The Sun is the source of energy for the Solar System, which makes life possible on Earth. All the objects in the Solar System revolve around it. The Sun is actually a star found at the center of the Solar System. It is estimated to be about 4 1/2 billion years old. The Romans called the Sun Sol, which in English means sun. In ancient Greece, the Sun was called Helios. • The Sun is over 300,000 times larger than the Earth. At around 865,000 miles wide, the Sun’s diameter is about 110 times wider than the earths. • Around 74% of the Sun’s mass is made up of hydrogen. Helium makes up around 24%. Heavier elements such as oxygen, carbon, iron and neon make up the remaining 2%. • Light from the Sun reaches the Earth in around 8 minutes. The Sun appears small to us on earth because it is 93 million miles away! • The Sun’s surface temperature is around 9,941 degrees Fahrenheit. The Sun’s core is around 24,480,032 degrees Fahrenheit! • The Sun generates HUGE amounts of energy by combining hydrogen nuclei into helium. This process is called nuclear fusion. • Without the Sun’s warmth, life on Earth would not exist.

Everything would be frozen. • There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy. From the Earth, only about 6,000 of these stars can be seen by the naked eye, and the Sun is one of them. • Unlike the planets, the Sun is great big sphere of hydrogen gas. Because of this, different parts of the Sun rotate at different speeds. You can see how fast the surface is rotating by tracking the movement of sunspots across the surface. Regions at the equator take 25 days to complete one rotation, while features at the poles can take 36 days. And the inside of the Sun seems to take about 27 days. • The Sun produces a solar wind which contains charged particles such as electrons and protons. Planets with strong magnetic fields such as the Earth manage to deflect most of these charged particles as they approach. The solar wind can have a wide range of effects on the Earth, such as power line surges, radio interference, and the beautiful aurora borealis. The solar wind also has large effects on the tails of comets and the trajectories of spacecraft. • A solar eclipse happens when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth. • Many early cultures saw the Sun as a deity or god. For example, ancient Egyptians had a Sun God named Ra and the Aztecs had a Sun God named Tonatiuh.

Daffodils Are Blooming! After a long Michigan winter comes spring! In the spring some plants, which have been “sleeping” during the winter, begin to grow. These plants called “perennials” start growing and pushing out of the soil in seemingly lifeless gardens. Early spring flowers will grow and bloom only during the brief spring season. Common spring flowers are tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses. The colors of early spring flowers are very special to discover after a long cold season. Be a flower detective and take a closer look at the new growth of spring. As all flowers of every season, spring flowers come in many shapes and heights and shades of color. Notice that some flowers petals grow up and others grow down. Count the petals and observe their shape, size and color differences. Study the stem height and leaf shape and size. It is fun to carefully examine how each flower grows and blooms in a unique way. Continue your detective work as you watch for new flowers coming into bloom as the spring turns into summer. Try sketching and drawing the flowers you see or try making some paper flowers to decorate your home. Have fun exploring the seasons of growing plants and flowers. Use your artist eye to create what you discover.
