A Special Mother's Day Recording
Rachel Warnke, a sixth grade student at Most Holy Trinity School of Fowler, knows how to spell! After taking first place at her school's Knights of Columbus spelling bee she went on to win the regional competition held in Mason on Feb. 15th. Her next achievement was to place third place in the state competition, held in Essexville on March 28th. Rachel, daughter of Al and Agnieszka Warnke, competed against 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from all over the state. Congratulations Rachel on a job well done!!!
As a surprise Mother's Day gift for their moms, students in Mrs. Schmitz's Kindergarten class at St. Joseph School in St. Johns went to her house where Mr. Schmitz has a recording studio. There, they recorded three songs to put on a CD along with a personal message from each of them to their mothers. The Mother's Day recording has become a yearly tradition for Mrs. Schmitz's kindergarteners.
Out of this World! Leonard Elementary in Ovid, Mi celebrated March is Reading Month with the theme "Out of this World". Our Leonard K-3 students met their goal of reading 6,000 books during the month of March, with the help and encouragment of MSU guest presenter, Mr. Mike Schein. Mike Schein is a mechanical engineer from the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at MSU, but is so much more! Mike has worked for NASA and shared some of his experiences with students. Mike informed the students that he is a problem solver and many times he has had to read and do research on things for NASA and MSU. For example, NASA needed a material on a telescope that could withstand heat, so they invented a thin foil material, much like the inside of a pop-tart wrapper, that was made of gold on one side and shiny silver on the other. That material was able to withstand incredible temperatures. Another time, Mike needed to be able to store cold gas as a liquid in space so he made an apparatus that could do that. Mike linked his problem solving abilities and his being a good reader to making that happen and encouraged students to do the same when they want to know how something works or to make something themselves. Mike also shared some pieces of history that were "Out of this World". Mike brought along an actual piece from the Hindenburg and demonstrated how strong the metal that was used in this "Out of this World" dirigible. The technology from even over a hundred years ago was amazing. But students were probably most appreciative and excited about Mike sharing that with a Space Shuttle telescope he helped design scientists were able to find an old pirate town on the Turkish coast. Later, the pirate town was excavated by archaeologists and some very interesting relics were found. Submitted by: Marcy Westenberg

Memorial Day is May 25th!
Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday that honors and remembers those who died while serving in the military. The roots of the Memorial Day observance goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. It was known as Decoration Day until 1882 and then it was changed to Memorial Day. The holiday was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971, Congress declared it a national holiday and changed it to the last Monday in May. It is customary to fly the U.S. flag at half staff on this day. It also marks the unofficial start to the summer season. Write about what you can do to honor this day? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Herbison Woods 6th Grade Students Visit Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery
DeWitt Elementary News Community Showcase
The 4th annual ComShowcase, munity proudly sponsored by DeWitt Public Schools, DeWitt Charter Township, the City of DeWitt and the DeWitt Area Chamber of Commerce, took place on Thursday, April 16th at the DeWitt High School. Herbison Woods, in addition to having displays at the Showcase, had Doodle Club members present and the HW All Star Choir performed in the auditorium.
All sixth grade students recently visited the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Mattawan. While on the field trip the students took a guided tour through the hatchery and went on a nature hike. Students were able to see how the DNR raise millions of fish and they learned the goal of the hatchery is the production of fish, the conservation of fish and the protection of fish habitat. This spring Herbison Woods students walked to the DeWitt Public Schools woodlot, where retired teacher Mr. Arbanas taught the students how to tap a maple tree. Students tapped one of the maple trees, boiled it down and tasted it in class. How Does A Seed Grow A Plant?
A lot of people are starting a vegetable or flower garden this time of year. Have you ever wondered how a plant grows from a seed that’s been planted? Germination takes place when a seed opens up and begins to grow the roots and the stalk of the plant. When you purchase your seeds, they are dormant (sleeping) for a period of time and dry. When your seed is planted however, the process of germination begins. Germination only takes place if the conditions are favorable. Those conditions are water, oxygen and a suitable temperature. First, the seed gathers nutrients from the soil. Once the seeds soak in some water and it’s warm, they will begin to grow. Cotyledons, or seed leaves, store food for the plant inside the seed. When the water seeps through the seed’s shell into the embryo, the seed begins to swell. It often splits the seed coating and with the absorption of oxygen by the seed, energy is made for growth. As the seed starts to germinate, the first thing that comes out of it is the main root. The main root develops root hairs which absorb more water and attaches the embryo to the dirt. Then side roots and leaves appear. Next, the stem with leaves pushes out the top of the seed. When it reaches above the dirt surface and comes into the light, it develops chlorophyll and carries on photosynthesis until foliage leaves deFamily Sampler May Special! 16”14” two item pizza,

velop. Photosynthesis means “putting together with light.” It is a process in which green plants use the energy from the sun to transform water, carbon dioxide and minerals into oxygen and sugar to help it grow.
Try This!
You will need: Dried green bean seeds from the store Paper towels Water in a glass A large ziploc bag
Soak 3 to 5 green bean seeds in water for 15 minutes. Wet two paper towels and place seeds between the two paper towels. Put the two layers of paper towel with the seeds into the plastic bag and seal it. Check the seeds everyday and keep the paper towels moist. After a few days, the bean seeds will break open and a long thin root will grow out of it. It is germinating. If you plant it in soil now, it will grow into a green bean plant. Other plants can grow from a leaf or a freshly broken branch. You just put the leaf stem or branch in water and it will grow roots.

I Want To Play The Harmonica!
The harmonica (or mouth organ) is a hand-held rectangular musical instrument. As the musician inhales and exhales into evenly spaced air channels, the metal reeds within produce musical notes. The length and thickness of the reed determines the note that is heard. The first patent was issued to Christian Friedrich Buschmann of Germany. Several decades later, a young German clockmaker named Matthias Hohner learned to make a harmonica and consequently changed his profession. Starting his new company in a kitchen in 1857, he turned out 650 in his first year with the help of family and one paid worker. He marketed his harmonica well with his name engraved on everyone and introduced his instrument to North America. The harmonica’s portability and affordability made it a favorite of the Western Cowboy. African-American blue musicians also found the harmonica an affordable alternative. Sonny Terry, James Cotton, Charles Musselwhite and William Clarke are just a few of the blue legends who used the harmonica. The harmonica then entered the mainstream. Numerous rock and roll musicians picked up the harmonica. Folk singer Bob Dylan popularized the placing of the harmonica on a neck frame to free his hands for playing the guitar, etc.
Today, five major types of harmonicas are produced: diatonic, diatonic tremolo-tuned, diatonic octavetuned, chromatic, and orchestral accompaniment. The singlereed diatonic harmonic is the most popular and can be heard in rock, country, blues, and folk music. It features 10 holes with 20 reeds, 10 for blow notes and 10 for draw notes.
