Frogs can lay as many as 4,000 eggs in frogspawn.

Depending on the species, some tadpoles can remain in their tadpole stage for as long as 8 months. Others only take 6 to 9 weeks.

Did you know that a group of frogs is called an army?

Frogs have teeth on their upper jaw. They use them to keep their prey in place until they can swallow it. They also use their eyes to help them swallow. Their eyes retract into their head and help push the food down their throat. Amazing!

There are over 5,000 different species of frog.

The 'croak' is unique to its species and some frog calls can be heard up to a mile away! Males use their croak to attract females.

Frogs

A frog's ear is called tympanum. It is located just behind the eye. If the tympanum is larger than the eye, the frog is male; if it is smaller, it is female.

Frogs eat bugs and worms - they swallow them whole! Frogs don't drink water - they absorb it through their skin instead. Clever!

The eyes and nose of a frog are on top of its head so it can breathe and see when most of its body is under the water.

Most frogs shed their skin. Some do it once a week but some will do it every day! Once the old skin has been pulled off, the frog usually eats it! Frogs have long back legs and webbed feet for jumping and swimming. Some frogs can leap over 20 times their own body length - that is like a human jumping 30 meters!

Not all frogs are green. Some tropical frogs are brightly coloured to warn predators that they are poisonous.

Frogs cannot see colour - they only see in black and white!

Controversially, frogs are often used for medical experiments.

Because frogs come out in the rain, people used to think they fell to earth from the sky! Many years ago in England, people tried catching them when it rained, to prove it! Frog bones form a ring when the frog is hibernating, just like trees do. Scientists can use these rings to figure out the age of a frog.

A frog is an amphibian which means it can live both on land and in water. The word amphibian is derived from Greek and means 'two lives'.

Some species of frog only live for a few years but many live for 6 or 7 years. The African Clawed Frog and the Green Tree Frog can live for 30 years in captivity!

In recent years, a painkiller with 200 times the power of morphine has been found in the skin of a frog. The Golden Dart frog is the most poisonous frog on earth. The skin of one frog could kill up to 1,000 people.

In Egypt, the frog is a symbol of life and fertility. In Egyptian mythology, Heget is a frog-goddess who represents fertility.

Traditionally, frogs are considered lucky in Scotland. Stone frogs are often kept in gardens and given as housewarming gifts.

Frogs cannot live in the sea or any salt water.

The world's biggest frog is the Goliath frog from West Africa - these can be over 30cm long! The smallest frogs in the world are less than 9mm long.

One type of desert frog can wait as long as seven years for water! It surrounds itself with a type of transparent bag that becomes its first meal once the rain comes.

People who study frogs are called herpetologists. Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles.
