With enrollment rates increasing more than 28 percent within the past three years, PHCC is among the fastest growing community colleges in the Florida College System. The energy and enthusiasm of our youthful students, combined with the experience and knowledge of older students, enriches the classroom.

The community college mission—to serve everyone seeking higher education—lies at the heart of our institution. While each year delivers new challenges, we are deeply grateful for the leadership offered by our District Board of Trustees and our Foundation Board of Directors. Their wisdom and guidance helps the College advance with confidence and fortitude. With the support of our leadership, the generosity of our donors, and the dedication of our faculty and staff, we have grown stronger, more creative and more resourceful.

slated to open in 2013, will provide higher education to residents in this booming central Pasco County region. (see page 28–29)

Meanwhile, PHCC moves forward with plans to create the College’s fifth campus in Wesley Chapel, made possible by the generous donation of land by the Porter Family. The Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch,

The Spring Hill Campus certainly is 2010’s crowning achievement. On August 23, PHCC opened its first new campus in more than 30 years, ushering in approximately 1,500 students. We have been delighted to witness this full-service campus in operation, vibrant with faculty, staff and students enjoying new classrooms, state-of-the-art equipment and an impressive library.

Many future dates are already reserved for meetings, events and activities. Most importantly, the days will be filled with instruction, learning, self discovery and personal growth—the elements of higher education that we find so deeply rewarding.

This 2011 calendar, with PHCC’s 2009–10 annual report included, presents 12 full months of new possibilities and chronicles the accomplishments of the past year. In these pages we record milestones, celebrate faculty and student successes, track our growth and recognize the Foundation’s much appreciated support.

Dear Donors and Friends:

This is PHCC’s first articulation agreement with an out-of-state university. Students can take advantage of this opportunity immediately.

Kettering University is consistently ranked among the top engineering and manufacturing programs nationally. This partnership aspires to train and develop a stronger pool of engineers and scientists and create more ‘industryready’ workers for the Tampa Bay region. After completing two years of coursework at PHCC, students can transfer to Kettering University— and within an additional two and a half years—earn a baccalaureate degree. The unique agreement provides students with opportunities for regional internships and post-graduation engineering positions.

In an effort to enhance its role in the educational and economic development of the area, PHCC reached out—1,200 miles out—to a new academic partner. The presidents of PHCC and Kettering University in Michigan signed a fully articulated agreement in 2010.

“Thank you for providing me with assistance in the form of a scholarship to attend PHCC. Given the cost of an education and books, it is sometimes difficult to reach the stars and dream of obtaining a degree. My parents were not afforded the opportunity to attend college, as they did not have the resources nor did they know where to seek assistance. I am fortunate that there is a scholarship available to students whose parents did not receive a bachelor’s degree, and for this I am grateful.”

PHCC student Joan Nobile commented on world peace, “Although difficult, anything is possible. If enough people do good deeds, we can achieve something wonderful in this world. Let’s leave it better than we found it. With courage and hope, we can do anything.”

“Student activities host many successful events, but participation in Peace Week was truly amazing,” said Theresa Papola, who coordinated the peace tile project and is now a PHCC alumna.

At the peace tile project tent, more than 500 6X6 inch white tiles were painted by students, faculty, staff and community members. Artists were asked to paint what “peace” means to them.

Peace Week, presented by PHCC’s Peace and Social Justice Institute and the student activities department, included keynote lectures, presentations, panel discussions, artistic performances, interactive activities, a peace tile project and the formation of a sand mandala. The program featured events on each of PHCC’s campuses for a full week.

Peace through compassion

Hosting two ceremonies allowed family and friends of the graduates to attend one or both events. More than 325 degrees and certificates were conferred at the ceremonies out of the 845 spring graduates eligible to participate.

A morning ceremony honored candidates earning their Associate in Science (AS) degree, Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree, Applied Technology diploma, certificate or GED, followed by an afternoon ceremony for those earning their Associate in Arts (AA) degree.

PHCC’s enrollment rose over 15 percent last year and 10 percent the year before. Because graduating classes have grown exponentially, PHCC began holding two commencement ceremonies in the spring of 2010.

As PHCC’s enrollment continues to soar to new heights, the College keeps pace by adding faculty, staff, services and technology. Updating and expanding facilities at current campuses and planning new PHCC locations have been essential to meet the needs of our diverse student population. The College embraces its mission to educate future Pasco and Hernando county residents, including teachers, health care providers, law enforcement officers and business leaders. PHCC continually seeks and implements improvements vital to the success of our students, the institution and the community. Each year the College celebrates many achievements and the 2009-2010 academic year was no exception. This year PHCC:

“I work as a math tutor in the TeachingLearning Center at PHCC’s East Campus. I have enjoyed it so much that I changed from my original degree to one in mathematics. I am currently completing my associate’s degree at PHCC and then I plan to transfer to a university to obtain a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics. I want to thank you for this wonderful opportunity in which others are willing to help students like me achieve our dreams of success, and continue to benefit the community.”

Visitors had the opportunity to buy discounted tickets and gift certificates for the 2010 performing arts series.

A classic car show was presented by the Sunset Corvette and Classic Car Club and there was a live radio remote broadcast by WJQB True Oldies Radio. Movies about the 1950s were shown in the Performing Arts Center and guests tried their skills in hula hoop and bubble gum blowing contests.

The Foundation celebrated the newly remodeled Performing Arts Center with an open house attended by more than 150 patrons. The event featured lively entertainment, activities and 1950s food at ‘50s prices.

The Pasco-Hernando Community College Performing Arts Center underwent significant renovations in 2009. A teal velvet curtain, new carpet and 586 beautiful and comfortable seats were installed giving the theater a more modern and spacious look.

The college hopes to break ground on the campus in early 2012, with doors opening for classes in the fall of 2013.

“We are deeply grateful to the Porter family for their generous donation of this very valuable acreage,” said Katherine Johnson, Ed.D., PHCC president. “The Porter family shares PHCC’s vision to provide quality education to the residents of this growing region of Pasco County. Their investment will have an immeasurably positive impact on the residents and economy of this community for many years to come.”

Students residing in south central Pasco County won’t have far to travel when the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch opens in 2013. A generous land donation by the Porter family, owners of Wiregrass Ranch, and an allocated $45 million in state Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) funds have made this project possible. PHCC’s fifth full service campus will be located adjacent to Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. The other campuses are in Dade City, New Port Richey, Brooksville and Spring Hill.

In addition to the income from state appropriations and student tuition and fees, the funds we receive from our Foundation provide much-needed development and scholarship opportunities.

PHCC’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30. The following figures are based through the 2009–2010 fiscal year. Over the past three years, PHCC has experienced a student enrollment increase of more than 28 percent. This rapid growth has created many challenges for our institution to provide adequate resources to support our fundamental priority— student learning.

To celebrate the group’s anniversary and lasting educational legacy, the PHCC Foundation hosted a reception in the library of the college’s Brooksville campus. Former PHCC students who received the Brooksville Woman’s Club Scholarship attended in addition to members of the club. A slideshow tribute was shown at the reception, while a collection of keepsakes commemorating the club’s anniversary was displayed in the library.

Since its establishment, the scholarship has supported 24 PHCC students with more than $15,000 in awards, and will perpetually give the gift of education to future students.

In 1989, the Brooksville Woman’s Club established a scholarship at Pasco-Hernando Community College for Brooksville area women. This endowed scholarship has grown to nearly $40,000 with significant contributions over time. The group continues to make contributions to the scholarship in memory of club members who have passed away

In 1910 a group of local hard-working women created the Brooksville Woman’s Club in an effort improve the community. Their commitment to each other and the Brooksville community was demonstrated through the many traditions and services the club spearheaded which include a town library, a garden club, Christmas parade, campaigns for cleaner streets and house fronts, youth centers and activities, and the fingerprinting of children in conjunction with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
