Communication Brief Initial Ideas

Icons of Communication

An idea I have had for this brief has been taken out of the idea of speech bubbles that are used in comic books for characters to communicate with each other. What I want to do with this idea however is to take the speech bubble out of the comic book and place it in the real everyday world. I haven’t got any ideas planted in stone but I am thinking for this brief I might try my hand at a bit of motion graphics as I am thinking I might use photography and create a speech bobble from some form of card or something that write on and then wipe clean. The idea behind this concept is to capture the everyday convocations and the everyday life of a student but instead of using recording and capturing the sounds I want to show the convocation through the means of which it would be shown through a comic book. This is only one idea to start with and I might not even use it but I think that with the right amount of time and effort put in this could be a really nice project to start the year. Today we speak through devices yes but this is mostly done by our hands and fingers. Today we spend more time speaking to someone through our phones, or laptops and its our fingers that our doing the talking. Hands have always been a form of a communicator, example thumps up, your okay, and we use our hands in our body language when we are speaking to someone through gestures when we are talking face to face with someone. However due to technology our hands and fingers not do a lot more in terms of communication today. Our main forms of communication are done through touching things that are hand held that you can walk around with in our pockets or in our bags. This gave me the idea to show in a graphic media that communication is done today with our hands and not our mouths. I am thinking of some way that I will be able to present this in the form of a poster with a modern influence of graphic design style. One final idea that I have had is to do an abstract illustration of some form to show the various paths that signals have to travel around the earth bouncing of the various different satellites. I think it would be interesting to try and see the pattern that would come up and maybe I might be able to get different signals for different communication companies (ie virgin media over T Mobile) I am sure that I could display the signal paths that they take in more than one way. I would have to put a lot of research into this idea if I move forward with it and I am not sure if it can be done but if I do chose this idea then I think there is a lot that can be done with it.

This is my first piece of design I created for communication. I dicided to keep it simple with various different icons of communication.

First Poster Designs

Typography of Communication

These are my first poster designs that I have based around the idea of sattalite communication and satalite patterns

Here are my two different style of typography I have created for communication. the two themes I am going for are dazzle ship patterns and Sci Fi insprired fonts.

Conversations that are taken For granted Posters

Revolution Propaganda poster When creating a Propaganda poster a key element that goes into the poster is what the hand is doing and how it is formed. For an example the closed fist could be seen as a sign of power, aggression, defiance and violence, where as in other poster the hand could be pointing at you to try and communicate its message directly across to you, one of the most famous of these examples are Americans uncle Sam’s poster and the British WW1 lord Kitchener by David Lloyd George. One thing that all these posters have in common is that the arm is never down by someone’s side they are always stretched out to the full, this could be interoperated as a sign to move forward, as sign to unite together as one, or to keep going with the effort your side is putting in. I like propaganda posters I think the designs can be very influential, however I don’t like how many propaganda posters twist the truth of what is happening in the real world. Looking at these posters has give me an idea of how I want to present my own conversation poster.

Final Posters Of communication

Cafe’ Society

This is the small little Cafe’ ‘Cafe’ Society’ me and my group decided to Re Brand this cafe’ as well felt it had great promise when we looked at it from the outside and when we went inside and saw the interior design of the cafe’ as it has a strong theme of art Nouveau and art Deco. The owners of the Cafe’ seemed more then happy for us to conduct our re brand project based on their cafe’. The aim I had for this project was to update the outside presence to draw in a younger target audience.

Brand Guild lines Logo With Border Here is the final logo that I have designed for Cafe’ Society. I didn’t want to have just a small cup and and some typography. I wanted to home in on the design of Art Deco so I decided to create my own little art Deco style border. I didn’t want to try and be too fancy so I have kept it to a minimal shapes and colour. Despite this I think that my logo looks very professional now and the theme of art Deco is much easier to see and I think it would catch your eye a lot more. I think this logo would work very well on a menu or on a staff uniform. The next step I will be taking is demonstrating scale used for the printing.

Visual Mock up of Logo

These are my virutual mock ups of what my logo would look like in the real world. These images were created using Online Mock ups and my logo.

Background of MOO Moo was is a design company built from the ground up. It started as a few people working in a warehouse space and has now extended to various parts of London and also have establishments in Providence and Boston in the USA. From reading the company’s background history and the ideals that they stand for they are very friendly, helpful initiative and fun to work with. The company is full of people from different parts of the world with different backgrounds in design. One of the things that MOO stands for is people who are excited to come into work, and people who are willing to question the form and have a real passion for what they do. They also stand for playfulness in design and this shows in the attitude and working environment of the company. As seen and read it is not all about working hard they have great relaxing services, a football team and even a cheese club. I need to show this side of Moo when creating my design for the company, I need to think how I can show playfulness combined with smart and clever design. I want to show MOO’s ethicists and morals in my design but keep it at a professional level and come out with something new and fresh I hope.

Initial Moo sketches

Illustrator City scape

Here are my initial sketches for my Moo the 2 sketches are looking at a city scape design idea and also the way I can show tools using a visual effect. I am happy with my rough thump nails sketches and I think that I have something good to work on here with my design.

Laser Cut Objects

Final City scape Design

Once I had the cut out down I was a bit disappointed with the shading done by the laser cutter and that you could leave finger prints on the shading, to sort this out I decided I wanted fill it in myself. To start I thought that I could fill it in with a black marker however the texture of the shading wasn’t well suited for marker pen. Instead of marker pen I decided that I would paint it instead with acrylic paint. I chose brown because I dint have enough money to buy all the paints that I would have wanted to use but also because brown relates to wood and I wanted to keep the idea of recycling and eco friendliness.

The Level Collective The Level collective is a clothing brand looking at selling their merchandise to the kind of people that like exploring, adventure and travel; snowboarders, skaters, surfers rock climbers ect. One of the ethics I like bout the company is that they are all about being as fair as possible with all aspect of the company. This ranges from the materials used in the production of their clothing, the workers who make the clothing are paid a fair wage and finally they sell these products on to us for a reasonable price. A special part of the company is that it is doing its part to help people less fortunate then us with people in Romania making the beanie hats, this provides these people with employment and money to live off. I am hoping that I can capture the image of the design company in my own way and as far as I can tell I will be focusing mostly on the mountain side of exploring as this is one of my areas of knowledge being a snowboarder myself, However I may look at other avenues to explore as this is only the early stage of development. I am looking forward to this brief and hope that I can produces a T shirt or hoodie design I can be proud of. My design can be no more the 3 colours for the printing of the T shirt.

Topic: Adventure One of my main themes for my design is going to be based around adventure. When I think about adventure I think about getting out of the house, going somewhere new, experience something amazing. These are thoughts that just off the top of my head I can think of. The Level Collective audience is an audience aged between 18-30 so it is aimed at a younger group of people with a passion in exploring, adventures, mountains, surfing photography ect. with this in mind I need to think carefully about how to proceed with my design as it need to appeal to this target market. With adventure I think I need to capture the imagery of an adventure on my designs.
