My response to the Brief After reading the brief I understand that this project is on how we can look at the streets in so many more ways more ways that we do not notice. After brain storming ideas I want to set my concept on how people change the image of a city. I am not looking at people building and knocking down buildings are bill boards or advertisement but the people themselves walking around ,shopping, driving I want to capture the every day life of individual people going about there lives on a normal day. I Will most likely be using photography in my work to gather my images but I will hopefully develop the images I take. I might also look at how in history the mass of the population have had an effect on the image of the city (example the industrial revolution). I am focusing on the people that live here and I want to catch both the beautiful and interesting parts of life in the city but also the ugly side of the city. I will be gathering my images and using Huddersfield to gather my images as I have never lived here and I want to see what I can find in the city and also the kind of people that walk the streets. With my images I intend to collect I will hopefully be doing a bit of manipulation with the images I have using either Photoshop or Illustrator. I am looking forward to my first project and If I can and I have some time I want to add a bit of typography in my work.
A city is not just a collection of buildings and concrete, it is teming with life and people. I look at a city as being a living organism that is constanly changing and growing. A city is kept alive by the people that inhabit it without people a city would turn to ruin, however people also lead to the demise of a city. We nock down buildings ,polute the air, pile our rubbish and waste in land fill sites and are starting to over populate cities. For this project I want to try and display the life off a city at different times from morning to night to show the people that inhabit the city and the movement. To do this I am going to be looking at transport like buses and cars, also I will be looking at certian points of the city and hopefully taking photos of that spot at different times of day to show the different mass and people that inhabit the city, for example the people I see at 1pm will be different then the ones I see at 1am, what time will have the highest number of people? This is what I want to find out once I have my photos I will then hopefully edit them using either Photoshop or Illustrator.
For my finial piece I want to use vector imagery in my work as I prefer using vector over pixels as I can re scale my work without the worry of losing the quality of my image. What I intend to do is using my photos of building and people using illustrator I intend to trace over them however remove all facial features so that the people that I have taken picture of remain anonymous, aswell I will not be using any of the photography I only want to create vector images from of the streets and the city I dont want any of my photos used as a background or anything like that. I am hoping if I have the time to add a small bit of typography into my work about street graphics.
5
Initial Idea an I have looked at a photographer called Martin Parr for this
brief and I want to try and use his style of photography in my work. What I find interesting about this photographer is that he takes photos of people in normal life doing normal things but what I like about him is that the people who are having there picture taken are not aware. The thing I like about this is that not of his photos are staged and his style is very spontaneous and he only has seconds to capture the image he wants. there is a lot of debate with his images though as it borders on peoples privacy and they have not given him permission to take pictures of them. the reason I am looking at Martin Parr is because I want to use his style of photography for my project. I think if I can use style of photography I can capture a pure true image of the city and its people, so you can get a true sense of what it is like in the city and also none of it will be staged. I hope that once I have gathered a few images I can then edit and manipulate them using either Photoshop or Illustator so I can create a more graphic image.I am thinking that I might be able to use some vector work with my images that I am able to collect. To gather my images I am hoping that I can explore a bit more of Huddersfield as it is a new place for me. I am hoping that I can find some great places and building to get some photos and I hope that while gathering I am careful when taking picture of total strangers as they may now like the fact that I am getting a photo of them with out their permission, but hopefully I can be sneaky and hope they don,t even realise I am taking a photo of them in the first place.

nd Photography
Here are my Primary source photos in the style of Martin Parr I have gathered for my project I have also gathered images of some of the buildings around Huddersfield that if I have time in this project I would like to use. Gathering my Martin Parr images was harder then I originally anticipated as I wanted to gather pictures of people without them realising so I could get an image that wasn’t staged in any way, also I don’t think many people would appreciate a stranger taking a photo of them in the middle of the street. I found that it was easier for me to take photos from a distance and using the zoom to capture images of people. The buildings on the other hand were of course at lot easier to gather images of, and a really good advantage of getting these images in Huddersfield is that it is a very post modern town. There is a wide range of different buildings that stretch from the 1970s up too 200 and as well at the moment there are buildings getting torn down and being built up, so this relates well with the change in flux of a cities image. I would really like to use my photos of the buildings if I have time and if I can but at the moment I want to focus on my images of people first. While gathering My images I am hoping that I can create a base to work on my concept and ideas, I think I have got off to a good start as I have a good rang of different images of both people and city buildings. My plan now is to go through them pick the ones that I feel are the strongest and with them move forward to start creating my design work. After doing some research I am thinking of creating some vector work.
7
Photography develop Here are my images after I had I had vectored them using Illustrator. each image took a while to create as I have never vectored people before on Illustror, however after the first one or two I got the idea of it. each image took me an hour or two to complete but this would depend on the complexity of the image. My original plan was to keep the photo and use it as a background for the image, but after taking away the background when I was on Illustrator I think the image works better with the vectored images being on a plain white background. With these images I want to create a short digital book with each page having just on image from the streets on a plain white background, I am hoping it will look simple but effective and still show that my project is on people and street images.
8
pment to Vector image These are my finished Illustrator sketches of my Martin Parr style photos that I have created using Illustrator. I am really happy with my end image, they came out a lot better then I origanly thought they would as I took a bit of a risk doing this as I have never tried drawing people using Illustrator before and it was very experimental. However one of the things that helped me was an Illustrator online tutorial that John had put up on Unilearn as i hadn’t used Illustrator for a few months and was not up to date with the latest version CS6, so it was good for me to have a recap on how the sytem oporated before I started. Once I started it was a very slow but productive season as every piece of clothing was constructed on a seperate layer and I had to keep in mind what was over laying what, once I had completed a layer I used the eye drop tool to fill that selected layer with the colour from the image. This was slow but steady progress and I am very happy with how my images have come out. Unlike the artists I looked at earlier (Miles Donovan and Graham Rounthwaite) I have removed any facial features that the people in the image had.
9
I have done this for two reasons, One is that the people I have taken photos of I never asked their permission to do so and I want them to remain anonimous out of resprect to them, Also I don’t think I would of had the time or the skill level to add all the facial features onto Illustrator and because most of
Here is an example of one of my images that I have created using Illustrator. What I have done is broken it up into each individual layer that I worked on from the very start to the very end and so that you can see the process I have used. I used this type of process in all of my images I have created in Illustator
Final development
As this was my first uni brief I wasn’t really sure what to expect and how the course was structured. I found it hard the first few weeks to get into the swing of things but after a few weeks I got my research done and started to produce work. As I have said I wanted to try something new for my first project so I decided to look at people, I am really glad that I did this as I think my images have turned out better then I thoughtthey would and I have a bit more of an understanding of how Illustrator works now. I am also really happy I had time to work on a bit of typography as I like creating typography, so in this first project I have added something old and something new. If I had more time to spend on this brief I would have wanted to look at the buildings and use some of the builiding photos I have during this project. If I was to completly restart this project then I would want to pick a different concept from my mind map that I worked on at the very start of the project. All in all I am happy with what I have created during this first brief there has been ups and downs but I am pleased with what I have achieved and also the main point I have taken away from this brief is how uni is run on my course.
10
Here are nine images of my development of the street graphics brief that I have created. I wasn’t happy with my final piece with my street graphics, I had a tough time understanding what to expect and produce at uni. However since then I have gained a greater understanding of what to produce and what to expect. Since the first brief I knew that I had to do some more experimentation and development with my piece so what I decided to do was to actual put my images on the street in a digital world, I had to do digital as its illegal to do it on the street. What I wanted to do is to pin up my Illustrations all over town with different illustrations following the same style of work I created them with, and to have them put up in all different areas in different scales. To do this I had to gather more images of the street lookinbg for a blank surface that I would be able to convert my images onto. Once I had the images on the photo I had to think about the perspective of the image to make it look like it had been put on the wall, also I added some effects and turned the opacity down so that it looked like it might have been sprayed on the wall in the photo. Finally I added my typography just as a finishing touch to the piece. I am much happier now with my street graphics and if I have time there is more that can be improved about these pieces but atv the moment I am happy with what I have done.
Here are some of my Street graphic images that I developed from my original designs from illustrator and then placing photography with the imagery using Photoshop. A final extension that I have done with this piece is changing the effects of the imagery using Lightroom. Each piece of imagery I have used a different effect to try and give the image a certain mood or feel about it depending on the location and the person/s that have been placed onto the imagery. I had a lot of fun doing this playing around with the effects adding lighting, tones, hues and various other things to these images. Now that they have been clean up a bit I feel that as images they have a much higher impact visually then the original development I did before I started on these pieces, I also feel now that I have made these small visual changes to my piece that they will look a lot more professional when I put them in my new visual language magazine. During the street graphic project I have enjoyed it a lot in terms of where my original ideas started from to the stage it has come to now. I might not of been able to go out and try spraying or sticking imagery on public buildings but I think I have achieved that in these virtual street art pieces I have made.

Cabinet of Curiosity
12
My response to the Brief For my initial idea I didn’t want to create a cabinet to display my work because I thought that it would be a bit to literal to the brief, so what I decided I might want to look into would be the idea surrounding a safe. My first idea is that I would put objects of sentimental value on the inside and on the outside have images bombarding the safe. I wanted to do this as a representation that despite all the hell that has gone on in the world while I have been here I still have objects that I have kept safe and remind me of better days. I thought of this as when you see a safe you think that there would be something of value to it like money and such, but in my safe there would be items that most would see as worthless but to me are priceless and I couldn’t replace. Another idea that I had was sort of switching the idea around. So on the outside I would cover it with images and objects that I am proud and happy to show people but on the inside of the safe I would want to write a coded message or letter on the inside telling my memories that I am not proud of and things that I don’t want people to know about me. If I do go with this idea it will make the brief very personal to me but if I can code the letter then the things I am not proud of will be on plain view to see but you wouldn’t be able to interpret it straight away unless you had my code book.
13
In my safe what i want to do is on my outside I want things that I am proud of and happy memories from certian points in my life, on the inside however I want to add what I am not pround of and some secrets. My Idea is it have both of these things in plain view my fond memories display by both pictures and artifacts in my life and the secret side to still be displayed but instead of showing using pictures I want to have a coded message on the inside, I am doing this because it adds to the curiosity to my project. What I am going to need to look into is how I am going to write a coded message, I have never even attempted a coded message before and as it is going to contain things I don’t want people to know I am going to have to make it hard to crack. One way that I might try and do this is through the use of symbols instead of using lettering. though I am hopefully getting a safe I will have the door unlocked and wide open so that it is not something physical but mental that prevents you from learning my secrets. I am going to have to experiment with coding as I think that this is going to be the hardest part of this project I think, but hopefully I can add a graphic element by creating my own symbols. The outside of the safe should be easy enough to display my happier memories and my proud moments through photography.
Initial thoughts and Ideas One source that I have looked at is a very unlikely source of a graphics designer. I decided to look into the myth of Pandora’s box. One of the first interesting things that I found out is that it is a story of Greek mythology involving the god Zeus and a plot to get even with Epimetheus and Prometheus for giving us fire without his permission. The story goes that Pandora was to marry Epimetheus but before she was sent down to earth she was given a small box with a big lock and was told never to open it and he gave the key to Epimetheus in the hope that curiosity would get the better of him and he would open the box. However Epimetheus had no intention of opening the box and it was Pandora that was the curios one, she stole the key while Epimethues while he slept and she opened the box. As soon as she opened the box it is said that Out flew every kind of disease and sickness, hate and envy, and all the bad things that people had never experienced before. She tried to stop all these things getting out but it was too late. Epimethues found Pandora sobbing that she had opened the box when Pandora showede him the empty box there was a very small bug left that managed to fly out, the little bugs name was Hope. Hope flew out into the world, a world that now held Envy, Crime, Hate, Disease – and Hope.
The reason that I am looking into this story is because I want to try and create my own personal Pandoras box for myself but with a 21st centry twist to it. Instead of having a big heavy lock to try and keep people from seeing my secrets that I don’t want people to know I want to have the box unlocked and in plain view. The way that people can look into my secrets is if they can decode and read a letter that I will write about myself. If someone can decode the letter then to me it would be all ugly things coming out the box when Pandora opened it on a personal level. In the myth aswell the box was surpose to be very beautiful on the outside this is what was said was one of the things that drove Pandora to open the box. With mine I want to cover it with images of my life that I would want people to see to try and draw them into trying to crack the coded message. The interesting thing about what I am trying to achieve is would you want to know the darker side to me? I know that if someone can decode my message then I am definatley not going to be seen in the same light that I am now so I am taking a big risk here.
For my own piece of hope inspired by Pandora I am going to need something small and nothing too fancy about it. It will have to have great meaning and be very personal to me. At first I was thinking about using my engraved Zippo my sister gave me but I think it is a little too flash for my project so I need to do some digging around to see what I can find and use as my symbol of hope. My letter will represent all the bad things and my secrets contained in a letter
14
My Coding for my letter My two sources that I have looked at to give me my idea of code have been modern Japanese writing and also the ancient Egyptians with there writing style. The reason I have done this is because both these languages are very alien to me and I have no idea what either one of them says or is going on about. This is what I want my code to work like as if its alien to people then they won’t know where to begin with trying to decode it. With my own code I want to try and incorprate a little bit of both countries type into my work but both have it individual to me and have a modern day digital twist to it. In any case I am going to make it as hard as I can to read and also try if its even possible to make my text a bit of an illustion to the eye, don’t have a clue however on how I can do that tnough. These are the symbols that I have created using Illustrator, very simple use of lines and dots. I am happy with how my symbols have turned out and they were pretty easy to make I just throw a few lines and dots together, however I am pleased with my outcomes. The next step is going to be the hard part I think which is ordering the symbols into coded sentences. I still haven’t figured out what I want to put in my coded letter but am sure I will just add to it as I go along. Here are the first few sentences that I have written out using my coded lettering, from what I have gathered from asking students and staff they don’t have a clue what it says, this is a good start but I feel that I can develop this a bit more after doing some more research into encryption.
15
Primary Source Imagery Here are a few of my primary source images for my collage and the images that will be used to decorate my safe. Theseimages were very easy top obtain as they are all of me and they were either on my own cameras or on facebook, this enabled me to have a huge gallery of primary source images to chose from. These photos I have chosen also show a massive time scale dating back from my class mates of my secondy year in primary school to going through high school and college all the way up to today and what I have been doing recently. I have been carefiul while picking these images because when I see all of them they remind me of an event that I was happy or having fun or has some personal meaning towards it. These areexactly the images I want to display on the outside of my safe, these are the nice images hiding the more ugly images and thoughts on the inside of my safe in my coded letter.
16
Collage Experiments This is a little collection of experimental collages I have created as an experiment for my project. At first glance it just seem like a collection of pictures muddled up showing images from my life. However after looking more I have added my coded messaging in the foreground with a low opacity. What I am trying to do is show that on the outside everything is lovely and very nice where as if you look deeper and if you could understand my code there are secretes buried away from different points in my life on plain view to you. After making the first collage I wanted to see if I could develop it more so I started to edit it using Photoshop playing around with some of the effects, I found some nice ones that I liked but I still feel I can develop this more and have as an addition to my main objective in this brief of creating my safe. However I might use one of these collages when it comes to decorating my safe. display (the safe).
17
Final Piece safe and Coded Letter This is a virtual mock up of what I intend my safe to look like from the outside after I have finished sticking on my photos on the outside. So far from the virtual mock up I am happy with how it will hopefully look after all of my collage of images from my life have all been stuck on. I can also take this back to my research on Pandora’s box as in my own view it looks rather good on the outside and on the inside it is a very different story. This mock up was very simple to make, I created the outside outlines using illustrator and then using Photoshop I was able to manipulate my images in so that they were in the correct position to give this mock a 3D effect. Now that I have done this I need to finish off writing my coded message and then created my physical safe collage however I can only do that when I go home over Christmas as I have tried looking round shops in Huddersfield but to my disappointment I have been unable to find any where that sells a safe at all, but luckily I have an old one back home that I will be using.
18
This is my coded message finished complete with some of my deepest darkest secrets. If you can decode and read this letter you will learn a lot more about me in these few lines and am guessing you wouldn’t want to see me again. I hope that you cannot decode it but this is the biggest curiosity of this project and I am gambling a bit with this project as I have made it very personal to me but I am confident that my code is up to scratch and my secrets should be safe. I really enjoyed this project, I was able to really think outside the box on this one and enjoyed it very much as I don’t like to think of my self as much of a literal type of designer.
19
Earth Artifacts 20
My response to the Brief Earth artifact. For this project I have to think of a way to visually show a representation of mankind and earth as if it was being displayed to alien life. One idea that I have had is to display one of our best features as a race and that is our constant craving for adventure and discovery. I am also going to have to include some of the basics like what our planet looks like and our physical appearance and how through evolution we have changed. One way that I was thinking of showing our adventurous side was to take some videos of from youtube of some of the crazy things that people have done for example climbing Everest, Felix buamgardmedr space jump and a range of other mad things that we do, also I would want to involve some images on our vast range of art that we have produced over the years. This project is a rather big undertaking and I am not sure what the important things from our history that I will need to add, but I think that as a graphic design student I am going to be a bit one sided to showing our creative and adventurous side rather then look at this project from the perspective of a scientist as they think too logical and after looking at the artifact that were sent up in 1977 from the 2 voyager spacecraft is I was an alien I would think we were a rather boring race from most of the images and information it contained. In this project I would want to display mankind doing what it does best and that’s breaking the limits of what we think is possible. If you look at our history we have only been flying for just over 100 years and the internet and wireless technology has only been around for a few years, so an other idea I might want to show is our rapid expansion intellect species. My next step I believe is to research into humanities greatest achievements that might be a good representation of our race.
21
Initial thoughts and Ideas One Idea I have had for this project is to show the planet earth in some form of journal, the reason I want to do this is because I want to show earth progression of both the plane and the life that live on it. I want to do it like this as the technology would not be need to understand it, were as the two voyager space crafts that were launched in 1977 contain a gold record. At the time this was the most advanced way of storing data and now in the modern age that technology is very outdated, so even if any of the voyager spacecraft are found the data stored my not even be able to be shown. This is why I think doing a journal would be a lot simpler to show data through images as all that is required is sight. I am also choosing a journal as I might want to do some hand drawn images inside of some of the information I will be adding. Another thing I might add alongside the journal would be some glass jars with some of the element or items of the earth, for example we there would be no life on earth if we didn’t have water or air life could not have spawned. The information I want to add would be almost a story of the planet so for example how we as a race have evolved over time, our way of life and some of the incredible things that we as human beings have done over time and also I might include some of the things that we aren’t so proud of. I think I would also want to show the vast culture and the way of life across the planet and not just human beings. For this project I am going to need to look into doing a lot of research on the planet. One strange source of inspiration I took from this project is from the book and the film Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy. In it one of the characters has a digital book with everything a hitch hiker needs to get by in the galaxy, I want to take this idea and use it in my own project. For my own project I want to create my own guide to our solar system and life on earth. I want to use a scrap book as it requires no technology to view. I also might look into some of the art work that was used in the movie even though it is animated it has got graphics to it and I am thinking I might follow the same theme that they used in the film. For this project I am going to need to buy a small A 5 scrap book that I am hoping to categorise with different information about our planet. This project I am going to need to do a lot of printing and sticking and also I am going to have to think how I am going to lay it out with imagery and text.

.Our Planet and our solar system
Space is really big and if you are reading this your very lucky person or being to have found this book. What you are looking at now is the planet Earth. Earth is the home world to about 7 billion humans, which are the dominant life forms on this planet. This book is a small guide to the way of life on our planet. We believe that our species has occupied this planet for about 7,000,000 full orbits around our sun (years). We know that over that period of time our planet and we humans have evolved bit by bit and we are still changing and evolving today.
7,000,000 years of human evolution.
The Earth has a vast variety of environments and living conditions, from the cold harsh winters of the poles to the dry and endless deserts of the Egypt you can almost find some form of life anywhere on the planet, as long as there is some supply of water even the smallest you are likely to find life of some form. We are a mixed planets of different believes, we have and wide range of animals that are homed to this planet living in vast ranges of habitats and come in all different shapes and sizes, we have many different customs and ways of life throughout the planet and live in different environments.
23
.Humanity
Where are the dominant and intellectual forms of life on our planet, we have made the biggest impact on the planet as we have evolved from living in caves to building huge structures and we are ever more changing the Earth. As we have evolved the need for resourses to sustain life are being streched.
We are capable of showing acts of kindness and love to each other, we can be a very compassionate race. We have helped those in need and still do today. We are capable of doing creating some beautiful things in the world, for example we help people when they are down, countries that have little we send aid to those who suffer.
We have progressed more and more for and are learning new things about our planet and the stars beyond. We have gone from the first manned flight just over 100 years ago to launching satellites and spacecraft and taking man to the moon. We have always wondered what lies beyond our planet and it has only been recently in human history that we have had the resourses and technology to get us there. We still have a long way to go but we are slowly getting there.
We are the only race on our planet that is capable of destroying our own race and our own world. We have fought each other for power, greed, hate, love, beliefs and many more. Since man learnt to walk we have never been able to all get along with each other.
24
Although we can be a species that helps those who are in need, we are also a species that have done some terrible things. Throughout history mankind has always had a way of wanting to destroy each other, and as time has gone by we have gotten better and better at it.
The thing that makes us unique on this planet is our ability to communicate with each, We have learn to work together and share ideas and all across the world there are different people with different languages and for the most part learn to live with each other on our one planet. One of the best examples we have to date of humans working together in are constant eagerness to learn more about ourselves in the International space station (ISS). The ISS was built to help us understand more about our planet and the stars beyond, 16 nations have been involved with the building and doing research on the ISS.
It is in our nature and I believe that as a species this trait about us is wired into our minds and there is nothing we can do about it. Despite this we haven’t destroyed ourselves yet. But then again all creates on Earth have conflicts so I dont think it makes us unique the only difference is that we are the best at it.
.Be ready for any Weather
Our planet has a huge amount of power driving it. If you come down to visit Earth you should be ready for all extremes of weather. On Earth you can be in one country and the weather would be sunshine and bliss and then in another country there could be a storm causing destruction. We have now started to use the weather to our advantage in helping us to produce energy to fuel our cities and our homes. We have taken the use of the sun and winds and have manage to harness that energy into fuel. The best part about this kind of energy is that it is clean and doesn’t harm the environment like other fuel sources.
The Planet that we live on is constantly changing ever so slightly bit by bit we believe that some point in the future continents will collide and reform land is eroded by the sea and we build our own new land. The image of Earth that is on the front page will not look exactly the same in the next 1000 years and that is without man alerting our planet.
Natural disasters have been around for as long as the planet has been around. We have seen the weather at its worse ripping up houses and buildings, we have seen the weather take many lives and destroy people’s homes. But when everything has died down we have dusted ourselves off and managed to rebuild and help those who were in need. This is am image of New Orleans after Hurrican Katrina 2005. It is not just the weather that has caused devastation but also the planet its self, under our planet are huge tectonic plates that are in constant movement below us. Sometimes these plates collide and cause massive earthquakes or tsunamis that again cause vast devastation. an example of this is the devistating volcanic eruption of Pompeii, the remains of its enhabitanc has been frozen in time by ash and are still frozen to this day. Earth goes through four different seasons in its years cycle. We have spring when the leafes start to grow back onto our trees and the amount of sunlight we get a day slowley goes up. Then we have summer this is the hottest the earth gets and the longest that we have sunlight in a day. After summer we Autum comes along and the days get darker and the leafes
start to fall off the trees. Finally we get winter when our days of sunlight are the shortest and our planet gets to the coldest point. after winter the cycle continues. A full year on Earth is 365 days.
A good example of showing how the Earth makes changes and how nature works is the site of Chernobyl. In 1986 at the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl during a safety test an accident occurred which caused reactor number 4 to go into a meltdown and blow spewing radiation into the sky. Both Chernobyl and its neighbouring city of Pripyat will be uninhabitable for thousands of years and yet the biggest nuclear accident recorded has still brought a small benefit. Although humans cannot live in the contaminated zone Chernobyl. today some of his art work is absolutely priceless. He was what we call today a post-impressionist painter, he was classed as this as in every piece he
created his work was very bold, a bit rough and you can see his own emotions that he felt when he was creating his work. But I think the thing that stands out the most about his work is the vast range of different tones of colour in his work. Sadly he died at an early age of 37 and it’s believed he shot himself but no gun was ever found.
25
.People that have Inspired
Despite some of the things we have done in our history there are still so many more things that we are proud that we have accomplished. A very recent one was in the year 2013 Felix Baumgartner was the first human being to brake the sound barrier without an engine in his world record space jump where he reached a speed of 843.6 MPH (miles per hour) and was in a free fall for 23.3884 miles. One of his qotes I find great is just before he made his record jump, “ Sometimes you have to get really high to see how small you are..... Am going home now”.
Here are two great men who fought for the belief of equal rights to all man kind. The first man is Martin Luther King a man born into a racists society who had a belief that one day black people and white people would be able to live together in peace and harmony instead of a world of division you can’t walk then crawl, but what ever you do keep moving forward”. segregation. He fought for these rights with out using a single act of violence. My favourite Quote by him is this “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but what ever you do keep moving forward”.
This is the artist Banksy he is a 21 century street artist and is a very well-known artist of the modern age. This signature style is his stencilling technique on top of which he adds a bit of dark humour that is mostly directed at society or the government. Banksy uses the streets as an art canvas on which he creates his work. One of the best things I find about hiom is no one knows who this great artists is, all we know is he is british One of my favourite quotes is “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable” Banksy.
The second musician I am showing is a more personal favourite Dave Grohl. Working hard at the start of his career in his first band Nirvana, Dave and his band mates slowly started to become the most popular band of the time. Even after the Death of one of his closest friendand lead singer Kurt Cobain, his love for music never died and he later formned the band Foo Fighters that he become the front man and lead singer and has been praised as one of the greatest musicians of all time. One of my favourite quotes by dave is this “ That’s one of the great thing about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing back for 85,000 different reasons”.
This is Stephan Hawking, he is one of if not the greatest minds of our time, his passion is and always has been theoretical physics. One thin that is truly incredible about him is that in 1963 he contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live. Yet he went to Cambridge and continued his research but as his body deteriorated his mind did not and he is still alive in 2014 despite the odd and still making ground breaking discovery’s about the universe. “However difficult life may see, there is always something you can do and succeed at”. Stephan hawking.
This is Henery Dunant who founded one of the most important organisations on planet earth. He was the founder of the Red Cross international committee in 1863, The idea behind this that in all countries should form associations to help the sick and wounded on the battle field, whichever side they belong to. For Dunant personally, financial difficulties led to poverty and loss of social respect. But the organisation he had created grew. In His later years he was award the noble peace pricefor his lifes work with the red cross. I could not find a quote so instead here is a passage from his book, A Memory of Solferino “Thy power, let there be peace, O God”.

Final Piece Here is my final piece in the form of my idea formed from the idea of creating a journal guide to planet Earth. As I have shown through my magazine I have created 5 different categories, each having their own representation of Earth. I have tried to create a simple design and easy to understand and in my mind some interesting facts about our planets history if you had never come across it before. I believe that I have done this with my final piece I think the layout and imagery used is clear and easy to understand. I didn’t enjoy this brief as much as I have with other briefs as I think I took a bit too much of a literal based idea. I couldn’t use too much primary source imagery as had to rely for most of it to come out of the internet. However one thing that I did take out of this project was that I did learn a lot about our planet and its history. This is as my researched has played a very large role in this final piece, after I got the marks back when I first handed my work in I went back and looked through the brief and wondered what I go do to extend the project. An idea came to me that I could send post cards along with my journey with various different life conditions Earth. The idea behind this is if we met aliens I would want to show them places on the planet that share similar conditions of their planet, for example I have added our deepest oceans, our tallest mountain biggest jungle and more. I want to send them these places as a little postcode containing a picture of the place but also for that little extra as my project has been so heavily based on research I have added the Longitude and Latitude of the location, just to make it easy to find. I like this idea that I have come up with after my first assessment I think it’s a nice little extra piece that I could involve in this piece and when coming up with this idea I had the idea of abstraction in mind. I think that if I was to do this brief again I would definitely think of a more abstract idea so that I could come up with some more design and incorporate the facts I have found out about our planet.

Type Face Here are the step by step stages I have took when creating my typography. To start with I looked at two artists Wyndam Lewis and El Lissitzky, at the start I was just doing rough sketches taking different elements of the artists’ work and trying to create type out of it. After my initial experimentation I decided my strongest type was based off El Lissitzky basing my text off triangles and circles. Once I had picked my artists I then went about creating my text from A to Z on graph paper and paying more attention to detail. Finally I scanned in my work and did a digital mock-up of it using Illustrator. I am happy with my Final digital piece I think that I have shown a lot of development work to get to the final outcome I think it is clean and clear and I have stuck to the artists piece that I looked at when I started. This is a good base to work on, I think I need to do some cleaning up here and there as I am hoping that I will be able to use this typography in my final brief New Visual Language.
Here is my typography for my magazine that I have done. I have developed it since I handed it in as it needed doing for my magazine. Since my last font I have created lower case lettering changed the letter N so that it is a lot more legible to read and understand. I have also added a back shadow to the text just to make it stand out a bit more. I am rather happy with this my typography now, it looks a lot better since I have cleaned it up and it has worked well with my first magazine design, I feel it fits in with the theme and design very well. In terms of development at the moment I don’t think there is much that I can do with it at this time but maybe when I am designing my other magazines I might need to make a few tweeks so that it goes with the theme. Overall I am happy with the way it has turned out and feel that it looks like a lot better standard of work.

My Manifesto
Here are three designs for my Manifesto on what I think it is to be a graphic designer today. My idea for this piece is to show that today nearly all pieces of graphic work is all done on a computer, we have lost our traditional methods of using pen and paper when it comes to a final design. I decided to use the idea of displaying this by using binary coding in my manifesto, binary codes are used in all computers and it is a very simple code which only includes a 0 or a 1 in it. Binary code is the language of a computer telling the computer what to do very similar to a human beings nerve system sending information from the brain to a muscle in the body to do something. What I have done for my manifesto is create my own binary code and placed in the code a small sentence with the message “graphic design in the 21st century is only spoken in one language, and its called binary code the language of everyday life. With this message what I am trying to put across is that in the modern age the language that no one speaks is the dominant language of the world and is used in forms of media, science, health, socialising almost everything. We don’t hear is or speak but it is spoken all across the world and it never ends and as humans we have come to rely on it so much and no one notices it.
