Chili Cook-off

n Kilgore the coming of fall means Friday night football, brisk evenings, tall boots and chili. Come wind, rain or shine on the first Thursday in November over 100 oilfield service companies gather under the derricks to compete for the title of best chili in the oil patch. Twenty-one year cook-off veterans, Bob Davis and Leo Lowery have been involved from the beginning. According to Bob, “ My dad and I would attend the Shreveport cook-off and decided that Kilgore could do one as well. ” Our first year we had about eight teams gathered on the corner of Commerce & Knowles.” Leo said, “ We really didn’t know what we were doing. We found a set of rules and just took off from there. ” In 2012 over 2.5 tons of chili was cooked, over 10,000 armbands were sold and over sixty thousand dollars was donated to multiple non-profit organizations in Kilgore and East Texas.

Chili Cook-Off competitors come from Oklahoma, Louisiana and the entire state of Texas. The Wednesday night before the cook-off has developed into a private party for all the energy related service companies. Leo describes the event as his “ favorite part. It helps build relationships between companies and allows everyone to have a good time together.” With 21 years under their belts, Bob and Leo have begun to pass the torch. When asked what the secret of their success was, both replied “ we had the right thing at the right time.” Event attendance typically ebbs and flows over the years but not this one. It has steadily grown into Kilgore’s largest event and possibly the largest in East Texas. Leo’s advice to the new comers, “ keep it simple and enjoy yourself. ”

Bob and Leo never dreamed it would turn into the mammoth event it is today. Davis said, “ we never expected to raise money and only it took a few years for us to be able to donate to the area non-profits.” Originally, the money was donated to the Kilgore Community Crisis Center but when the Crisis Closed in 2010, the East Texas Treatment Center was chosen as the primary recipient along with the responsibility producing the event. According to Davis, “ not only does it raise money for charity but it supports local businesses as well. We fill every hotel room in Kilgore and then some. ”

Organ Festival Honoring the Life and Work of Roy Perry By: Lorenz Maycher

n November, music lovers, organists and organ builders will be coming from all parts of the United States to attend the third annual East Texas Pipe Organ Festival. This five-day festival was created in 2011 to showcase the Aeolian-Skinner pipe organs of East Texas designed and tonally finished by master organist and organ craftsman Roy Perry (1906-1978). Mr. Perry was organist for forty years (1932-1972) at First Presbyterian Church, Kilgore, and, in collaboration with G. Donald Harrison, president of the AeolianSkinner Company of Boston, Massachusetts, and the Williams Family of New Orleans, designed many notable pipe organs throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

and infrastructure, collaborating with Mr. Perry on the finishing the pipework, and doing the tuning of each pipe. (Note: each pipe organ we will visit contains pipework ranging, from the smallest, 1525 pipes (First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches) to the largest, 7,000 pipes (St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, Shreveport).

This year’s festival will present sixteen concerts that are free and open to the public, including six complete programs on Mr. Perry’s masterpiece, the 1949 Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, Opus 1173 at First Presbyterian Church, Kilgore. This noble musical instrument, which was the gift of Mrs. Lou Della Crim and her family, gained nationwide prominence in a series of LP recordings produced in the 1950s, and is most notable for its Trompette-en-Chamade, the first such set of pipes installed in the United States. Guest artists performing on Opus 1173 this year include Isabelle Demers (newly appointed professor of organ at Baylor University), Nathan Laube (newly appointed professor of organ at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York), Jason Roberts (a recent graduate of Yale University), the ever-popular Charles Callahan, and Lorenz Maycher, who will play the world premiere performance of Dr. Callahan’s “Lyric Suite,” commissioned by this year’s East Texas Pipe Organ Festival. Brett Valliant also returns for the festival’s popular Silent Movie Night, in which he will accompany Cecil B. DeMille’s “The King of Kings.”

This year’s festival will also feature special presentations and concerts honoring legendary concert organist Williams Teague, who was organist for forty years at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, Shreveport, and professor of organ at Centenary College, Shreveport for the same number of years. And, for the third year, Brett Valliant will present special concerts for school children at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Kilgore.

In Mr. Perry’s own words from a pamphlet published in 1952, “None of these organs is extreme in any direction. They are alike only by way of family resemblance, but each in its way is a work of art. They provide a generous education in contemporary organ building, and are happily concentrated in a small geographical area.”

Other instruments to be featured at this year’s festival are the landmark Rogers Lacy Memorial Organ, 1951 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1174 at First Baptist Church, Longview; 1952 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1175 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Kilgore; 1953 AeolianSkinner Opus 1153a at First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches; and 1959 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1308 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, Shreveport. Each of these organs was designed by Mr. Perry, who also did the tonal finishing (final adjustment on each individual pipe). The Williams Family of New Orleans installed the instruments, with Nora Williams completing the vast amount of electrical wiring and her husband, Jimmy, completing each instrument’s winding system 12

s you look out over the Kilgore Skyline, along with the many derricks, you see many different types of oilfield equipment. From the storage tanks to the Christmas tree valve assemblies to the ever familiar pump jacks moving up and down. This equipment has been supplying the oil industry of Kilgore for over eight decades. This equipment has been the standard for many of those decades. Now, some of the equipment, you may notice, is changing. Not necessarily in function, but in something more apparent to the public appearance. The trail blazer implementing these changes is Mike Tate. The City of Kilgore recently initiated a Beautification Plan that is focusing on improving many things visual in our community. From welcome signage, landscaping and even those oilfield industry stalwarts, the pump jacks and storage tanks. Mr. Tate attended one of the very first meetings between the oilfield representatives and the City of Kilgore to discuss ways to beautify these longstanding and sometimes appearance weary, work sites that are so important to our economy. According to Mike, “I’m from here and take pride in my community.” Director of Special Services, B.J. Owen, says that “Mike’s input into the workings, regulations, and logistics of operation and maintenance, was instrumental in our fabrication of ordinances that help regulate the “beauty” of these well sites. We have since drafted ordinances that allow us to approach operators with guidelines on appearance and safety standards for the over 200 well sites inside the city limits. On his own, Mike Tate took it even farther. Within weeks of his meeting with the City, he had painted the “chili pepper” pump jack that sits in front of the Kilgore Chili’s restaurant. He has taken down several of his old pump jacks and replaced them with new, smaller and safer transfer stations. He has also already repainted, re-fenced and refurbished several of his tank batteries.” Owen also says. “Mike is proving himself to be an outstanding beautification partner and a progressive industry representative with the work that he is doing. All this work has been on his own, at his expense, with no requests from the City.” Mike is humble about his improvements saying, “I told them (the staff) what I wanted to do and they just ran with it.” While Mike is not giving any details about future projects, there is certainly more surprises to come!

The History of Gregg County Cemeteries

s Halloween nears in October and many East Texans decorate for the spookier holiday of the year, the Gregg County Historical Museum looks to our local cemeteries… not so much for ghosts or goblins, but for the history that lies within. Each Year the museum features a tour of a local cemetery, recognizing well known East Texans laid to rest there. The tour is hosted by an actor portraying a colleague, family member, or the deceased themselves. The actor will then relay to the members of the tour the events of the life of this person who became an important part of Gregg County history. It seems a good time to tell the story about the life and death of Karen Silkwood.

By: Tony McCullough were missing and never found. The theories of conspiracy and foul play still linger in books and documentaries today. The Atomic Energy Commission ordered an autopsy on Karen Silkwood’s body and the plutonium contamination was officially documented. Silkwood’s father and children sued Kerr-McGee and a jury awarded them $505,000 in damages and $10,000,000 in punitive damages, but upon appeal in federal court, the judgment was reduced to only $5,000. In 1984, the US Supreme Court restored the original verdict, and Kerr-McGee settled out of court for $1.38 million.

Karen Silkwood’s parents resided in Kilgore when she was born nearby in Longview in February 1946. Her parents moved to Nederland during her childhood and she attended Lamar College in Beaumont. In 1965 she married an oilfield worker in the Beaumont area and had three children. She left her husband in 1972 and moved to Oklahoma City where she soon went to work for Kerr-McGee Cimarron Fuel plant which made plutonium pellets for nuclear reactors.

Being employed by Kerr-McGee, Silkwood joined the Atomic Workers Union. After being very vocal and proactive during a union strike she was asked to be the first woman on the union’s bargaining committee. She would investigate possible health and safety violations at Kerr-McGee. In 1974, Karen performed a routine self test for radiation and tested positive for plutonium contamination. Karen Silkwood had 400 times the legal limit for plutonium in her body. Kerr-McGee insisted that Silkwood had contaminated herself to cause damage to the company, but Karen documented numerous violations time and again which she kept in her files. She went to the union with her evidence and decided to go public with her claims. As Silkwood drove to meet with a journalist from the New York Times, she was involved in a mysterious car accident. It appeared she had run off the road in an accident, but upon closer investigation there was evidence of her car being forced off the road, and her files containing her documented violations

In 1983 Karen Silkwood’s story was told nationally in the movie “Silkwood”. The film featured Meryl Streep as Silkwood, Cher as her friend and Kurt Russell as her love interest. The film won multiple Academy and Golden Globe Awards for the story of the human rights activist who fought so hard for her fellow employees and fell victim to negligence and foul play. Karen Silkwood was laid to rest in the Danville Cemetery on FM 2087 just east of Kilgore. 21

Going Gold for the

n 2005 Katrina refugee Ada Alexander had a choice. She could move back to New Orleans and attempt to rebuild or she could lay new roots elsewhere. With three children, Ada chose Kilgore to start her new life. Ada recalls, “ During the evacuation Kilgore was the first place we could find that had a room and would take pets. Everyone was so friendly and nice to us, we decided to stay.” Ada started coaching Acro gymnastics in the Kilgore skating rink and formed the Kilgore Acro-Flyers. The team quickly grew and she moved into her own building located on Hwy 42. This year the Kilgore AcroFlyers qualified their way to Louisville, KY to compete in the Jr. Olympics and brought home four gold medals and four bronze. According to Webster, “ Acrobatic Gymnastics is a competitive sport combining the strength, flexibility and technical precision of gymnastics with the grace and musicality of dance as well as the trust and camaraderie of a dedicated partnership.” Ada explains, “ Artistic gymnastics is all about the individual, acro is all about the team.” The world famous performing troupe, Cirque du Soleil is based on this art form. Ada’s background lends itself to the sport. She attended South Eastern University on a Ballet scholarship and began her career coaching bar, floor, beam gymnastics and dance in south Louisiana. Ada has been taking competitive acrobatic gymnastics teams to the Jr. Olympics since 1995. Carol Windham is the mother of six year old, Gold medalist Kaylee, “ Ever since Kaylee was little she has been shy. Joining Acro Flyers has given her confidence that I have never seen from her. She has gone from always burying her head in my shoulders because she is too shy to talk to someone to competing in front of 500 people with ease.” Acro gymnastics teaches children to work as a team and learn to truly trust one another. It builds mental and physical strength. Alexander says, “ The whole team practices together. The little ones do the same work as the teenagers.” According to Carol, “ Kaylee has been taught that being active and exercising is fun. She attends intense training 4 days a week 2-3 hours at a time. She has also learned about healthy nutrition. Competing in acrobatic gymnastics means you have to very strong.” The Gymnastics Association of Texas was invited to an honors ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion for all the Texas athletes who made great achievements in their sports and represented Texas well. Ada beams, “ It was a wonderful feeling to see their faces and know their stories and to know how far they have come makes all the hard work and kicks to the head worth it.” 23
