Gregg County Area Go Texan’s
Help Dreams Come True By: Mary Ramos
I
t’s a little known fact in Gregg County that a group of dedicated people formed a committee to promote the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the sole purpose of making sure one student in Gregg County gets an $18,000 college scholarship. Without this committee this scholarship would not be available. In the last 8 years more than $120,000 in scholarships has been given to students in Gregg County. “It’s time to let parents with a graduating senior know that this scholarship is available,” says Tommy Ogle, Gregg County Ambassador. Although Tommy doesn’t yet have a child old enough to qualify for this scholarship he knows it is there for the future. As the Gregg County Ambassador, Tommy must attend meetings in Houston several times a year with the Go Texan Committees. He also must agree to serve 3 years as an Ambassador to Houston. One member of the committee, former Go Texan Ambassador, Cynde Bell knows personally the value of this committee. Her daughter, Taylor Bell is attending Texas Tech on a 4 year scholarship. “What a blessing this has been for Taylor,” says Cynde, “This has allowed her to fulfill her dreams.”
But this is not the only scholarships available. “The applications for the scholarships are sent directly to Houston. We have no input into who wins each year but we are sent a list of all the students that qualify but are not chosen,” says Gregg County Area Go Texan President, Pate Greening. “We try to give a smaller scholarship to each of those local students.” The scholarships are open to all fields of study. The applications can be found on the website @ www.HLSR.com. Important Dates to Remember for this Scholarship: November 2013 Release of Online Application February 24, 2014 Online scholarship application due February 28, 2014 Supplemental documentation packet postmarked May 2014 Recipient selection notification May 2014 Awards Banquet There are 107 different types of committees with more than 28,000 volunteers associated with HLSR. The Area Go Texan is one of them. The members of the Gregg County Area Go Texan pay $60 each year in membership dues. The membership includes a Go Texan badge that will give the member and a guest access to each of the Houston Rodeo performances. According to HLSR this committee promotes the Show in surrounding counties through a variety of activities. Each county focuses on increasing ticket sales and Show participation from its area. A Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Go Texan scholarship is awarded to a qualified, outstanding student representing each Go Texan county. 2013 Educational Commitment: more than $24.6 million Number Awarded: 78 four-year, $18,000 college scholarships are presented to outstanding eligible students representing the
counties participating in the Show’s Area Go Texan program. This includes an additional 10 awards to be given at large to students within the 68 counties represented in the Area Go Texan Scholarship Program. Eligibility: The applicant must attend a public high school in one of the 62 Area Go Texan counties. The 62 participating Area Go Texan counties are: Anderson, Angelina, Aransas, Austin, Bastrop, Bee, Bell, Bosque, Brazos, Burleson, Caldwell, Calhoun, Cherokee, Colorado, DeWitt, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Goliad, Gonzales, Gregg, Grimes, Hardin, Harrison, Henderson, Hill, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Live Oak, Madison, Matagorda, McLennan, Milam, Nacogdoches, Navarro, Newton, Nueces, Orange, Panola, Polk, Refugio, Robertson, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, San Patricio, Shelby, Smith, Trinity, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Washington, Wharton and Williamson. About The Gregg County Go Area Texan: The Gregg County Area Go Texan committee is a Section 501 (c) (3) organization and
currently has 17 members including Tommy Ogle, Pate Greening, John Spivey, Emmett Capt, Kyle Stephens, Mary Ramos, Cynde Bell, Paula McCauley, Michael Wilcox, Jim Tachias, Kayla Richardson, Jeff Wright, Stephen Russell, Blake Weber, Danny Galvez, Kenneth Travis & Babette Tomberlain. The committee sends a team to compete in the World’s Championship Bar-BQue Contest in Houston each February. They also produce a Sporting Clay Shoot in September at Prairie Creek as one of their major fund raisers. Their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ Gregg-County-Area-Go-Texan) has details on upcoming events and fund raisers. A Gift of Music from the Kilgore College Piano Ensemble
T
By: Tony McCullough
is the season of the year in East Texas when the child somewhere deep within each of us emerges in anticipation of beautifully lit decorations constructed on our lawns, in front of homes hung with holiday lights to offer Christmas cheer to our neighbors and those passing by. As the shoppers rush to and fro with their treasures, so eager to place them underneath ornately decorated trees that spread beauty throughout the inside of our homes, it seems everywhere we go the sounds of the season complete the experience of this heartfelt time of the year. Through the years we have all felt the magical feeling when we hear that favorite carol or song that touches our hearts with warmth of the Christmas spirit. The pretty paper, pretty ribbons, listening lights, and hopes of catching a glimpse of Santa would not be complete without the sounds of the season. We all grew up listening to traditional Christmas Carols. It was the soundtrack to Christmas, but in 1984 the music of the holidays was impacted by a new, modern sound that people around the world received with open arms. It was the sounds of Mannheim Steamroller. Named after a German music technique featuring a strong bass line with a melodic melody, Mannheim Steamroller was the project of two modern composers, Chip Davis and pianist Jackson Berkey. There music was ultra-modern using only synthesizers as there orchestra. (Synthesizers are electronic instruments with a piano keyboard. They are capable of reproducing hundreds of sounds and voices, anything from traditional instruments to animal or human sound effects. Anything that can be recorded may be reproduced at the touch of a key.) The new music of Christmas swept the world as album after album was sold and people stood in line for hours upon days to purchase concert tickets. Since 1984 Mannheim Steamroller has released 5 albums, selling 28 million in the United States alone. Christmas music had a whole new dimension.
10
This December, East Texas will receive two concerts in the style of Mannheim Steamroller as a gift from a musically gifted group of Kilgore College students known as the Kilgore Piano Ensemble. Under the instruction of Mrs. Sandy Siler, eight incredibly talented pianists will perform modern arrangements of well loved seasonal music, using
2013 | www.KILGOREMAGAZINE.com | www.facebook.com/KilgoreMagazine
only synthesizers. Mrs. Siler’s groups have performed at the Music Teacher’s National Conventions in Salt Lake City, Utah; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Austin, Texas and Seattle, Washington. There will be two free performances of the Kilgore Piano Ensemble on Tuesday, December 3rd, at the Van Cliburn Auditorium of Kilgore College. There is no charge to attend the 10:00am and 1:30pm performances on December 3rd, but reservations are required. Fans of the Mannheim Steamroller music wait in anticipation of this event, but the excitement within the ensemble itself shows in the faces of the group. Siler’s past groups have performed twice with lead keyboardists for Mannheim, Jackson Berkey and wife Almeda. Jared, a member from Kilgore claims, “This has been one of the most unique experiences of my life!” The students do not survive on talent alone, though. The Kilgore Piano Ensemble practice as a group year round. “I love doing this for art’s sake, just to share the joy and happiness to others that can’t see it in their daily lives,” say ensemble member, Alan, from Gilmer.
is captivating. Mrs. Siler is a motivational speaker and she makes it a point to intertwine a little “life lessons” in the Keyboard Orchestra arrangements. Kristen, from Henderson adds, “This group brings a lot of talented people together. Some are very talented pianist and some very talented composers. When we bring them all together in this group they each get to showcase their own special talents.” All her students agree, “This is a very unique group.” It is said, “The greatest gift a person can offer someone is the gift of their talent.” That is exactly what the very talented Kilgore College Piano Ensemble is offering East Texas for the holidays. For reservations to either the 10am or 1:30pm performances on December 3rd, please call Mrs. Siler at (903) 658-2127 or email - sandysiler.com. For more information on the Kilgore College Keyboard Orchestra please visit www.SandySiler.com.
The Kilgore Piano Ensemble performs several times a year, with the Bach Piano Festival March 1st next year, The David Karp Piano Festival April 5th, and the Piano Concerto Concert on May 4th, but when speaking of the upcoming Christmas performances there seems to be twinkle in the eyes of the members of this select group. Brittany from Longview adds, “I think this is a good outlet for people that want to be more creative…They don’t want to just play piano, which is just an acoustic instrument. With a keyboard you have a variety to offer.” Mrs. Sandy Siler couldn’t be prouder of these remarkable students. & KILGORE LIVING LEADING
FORWARD By: Mary Ramos
K
ilgore Magazine took some time to visit with the three women who make up the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau. If you haven’t already met these beautiful, talented ladies you are in for a treat. Diversity in their backgrounds, careers and personal lives gives Kilgore the best possible advantage.
Kilgore Magazine is proud to Welcome: Cindy Morris Kilgore Chamber of Commerce President Darralyn Scobee Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Sheryl Phillips Office Manager Where did you grow up?
Cindy: I was born and raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma
(home of Phillips Petroleum Company) Bartlesville was a rich community, not just with oil money, but rich in history. My love for this community led me to a 9-1/2 year position with the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce. Darralyn: I was born in Kilgore but my father’s job with Union Oil took us to Nebraska, Utah and Louisiana, where I graduated from high school. Sheryl: Leander, TX (Outside of Austin) Tell us a little about you and your family:
Cindy: My family is my greatest accomplishment and blessing. My two daughters, Kelli Pair and Staci Keller (both of Grove, OK) are each successful in their career paths and have blessed me with 5 grandchildren and two wonderful son-in-laws. My four sisters and mother still live in the Bartlesville, OK area. Our family is very close and Christmas is a definite with Mom and 43 family members. Darralyn: I came to Longview to attend LeTourneau University where I met my late husband, David Scobee, who passed away in 1995. I have 4 wonderful grown children and 3 grandchildren. Sheryl: I’m married to Kevin Phillips (10 yrs) & we have 2 daughters, Evelyn (7) & Adison (3). What are your hobbies?
Cindy: I am an avid reader. My downtime is reading for about an hour before bedtime. It relaxes me and keeps my mind from wandering down the “work road”. My favorite authors range from Nora Roberts, Lisa Gardner, James Patterson, and John Grisham. My other hobby is enjoying time on the water. I consider myself a “lake girl” and enjoy boating and dinner on the deck with friends.
Darralyn: I am an avid gardener & horticulturist. I love live music & plays. My Kindle goes everywhere with me too because I love to read. Sheryl: I am a photographer, I enjoy scrapbooking & I love to cook. What inspired you to want to be a part of the Chamber / CVB?
Cindy: I started my career in my hometown of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in September 1980. Within one week of accepting the “job”, I knew that this line of work would become my career. It is what I was meant to do. My need for serving others is fulfilled through the Chamber of Commerce and my involvement in a community. Darralyn: I bring a lengthy family history as well as a deep love for Kilgore and the east Texas region to my new role as Director of Tourism. Both sets of grandparents, their extended families and of course my own parents have been in Kilgore since the early ‘30’s. To paraphrase the saying, I may have left Texas for a while, but I got back just as fast as I could! Sheryl: I consider myself a “people-person.” I don’t meet strangers, I meet new friends. When the job became available for the Office Manager, it seemed a perfect fit. I would estimate that 90% of my day-to-day is interaction with people in the community, whether through businesses or just walk-in visitors. Is there someone in your life that has inspired you to become the person you are today?
Cindy: My momma and a board. Darralyn: Dr. Bill Holda, President of Kilgore College & Dr.
Gerald Stanglin, VP of Instruction at Kilgore College. They taught me about integrity and a passion for learning. Sheryl: My father is my inspiration. He raised me, and had to struggle sometimes to do so. What I learned from him cannot be learned from a book. He taught me to be selfless and forgiving and to never give up. I am so grateful that God made him my Dad. What are your first year goals?
Cindy: To meet as many people as possible and build relationships. To re-establish a tourism program and increase visitors to Kilgore. Establish member programs – network events, business opportunities, member services. Create an avenue to better promote our member companies. Darralyn: My goals for the coming year include building relationships with business owners, expanding the Chamber’s role in local tourism, by taking advantage of the wealth of historical, cultural, social and educational events to promote Kilgore. Sheryl: Experience. I say that, not because I am in-experienced,
but because with each new event or project, I learn new ideas or more efficient ways to handle situations. Favorite quote, motto or verse:
Cindy: CARPE DIEM! (Seize the Day!) Darralyn: People may forget what you say, but they never
forget how you make them feel. Sheryl: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13. What are your personal / Civic Achievements:
Cindy: 32 years of experience as a Chamber Professional. Experience range: Community Development, Member Development and programming, Executive Director/President. Graduate of Institute for Organization Management, SMUDallas, Texas, Certified Chamber Manager – 2002, Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Executives – Named Executive of the Year 2002, Awarded Outstanding Website Design – Grove OK Chamber by Oklahoma Travel Industry Association, Awarded New Event of the Year – Miami OK Chamber by Oklahoma Travel Industry Association. Darralyn: I served two years as Co-President of Kilgore College Employees Association & two years as Stephen F. Austin Ag Ambassador. Sheryl: My involvement at church is very important to me. I am part of our Women’s Ministry leadership team, and help with event promotions. I am also on the Missions Committee, helping to better serve our missionary families (and individuals) serving in the field. What do you love most about Kilgore and the community?
Cindy: I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to be a
part of Kilgore, Texas. It is a well-rounded community and I have found the people to be extremely friendly and warm. Honestly it reminds me very much of my hometown with a rich history and a great local flavor. Darralyn: I love being able to walk into a local store and being greeted by name. Just like in “Cheers” you want to go where everyone knows your name. Sheryl: There is such a feeling of “home” here in Kilgore. I love running in to someone you know at the grocery store, or seeing one of my daughters’ friends from school at the park. It is the little things that help you feel established and connected in your community.

KHPF
History of the Derricks By: Gem Meacham & Updated by Sue Brown
T
he idea for Restoration of the Oil Derricks that once aligned the skyline of Kilgore came from Jack and Winter Elder at a Main Street Kilgore organizational brainstorming session in 1986.
Jack Parker made the original stars with Jim Hollingsworth and William Villyard making the stars at a later date. S&K made two stars in 2008 and Charles Miller also made several stars. The Roosth family supplied the star on the Hwy 42/I20 derrick.
Started by a whisper at a Main Street Organization meeting with City of Kilgore under Mayor Mickey Smith. Jack Elder, nudged by whisper from Winter, his wife, suggested the derricks of Kilgore needed to be restored.
The Merry Christmas banner was jointly purchased by KIBA and KHPF in the late 80s and hung until 2005 in its historic spot between the KIBA derrick (the only original derrick on the World’s Richest Acre) and the first KHPF derrick. In 2005 a donor donated a new Merry Xmas sign to hang in the same spot. The sign was made “historically correct” just like the sign of yesteryears that was spelled “Merry Xmas”. In 2011 the KHPF Derrick committee refurbished the sign bulbs and trimmings.
With the intent of putting the derricks back on the skyline, former Mayor Mickey Smith was the driving force behind organizing KHPF. Rob Schleier, Kilgore city attorney, made application for a charter that was issued January, 1987 and Ronnie Spradlin, serving as Citizen-at-Large, was the first board member for the organization. Mr. Spradlin was the first president of KHPF and was instrumental in the erection of the first derricks.. Other citizens appointed to the board included Roy Rosson, local accountant serving as Treasurer, Tom Brown, local attorney as legal advisor, Amanda Pratt Nobles, Main Street Manager, Joe White, East Texas Oil Museum director, Virginia Long, Texas Historical Commission board member,as well as Jimmy Dike, Kilgore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. (Ronnie bravely climbed the derricks to replace bulbs in the stars for Christmas. But only once}! KHPF has been fortunate to include as officers, directors and members, many outstanding community leaders throughout the years. The goal throughout the years has always remained constant - to preserve, promote and protect the unique heritage of Kilgore, Texas. KHPF’s initial goal was to erect 50 derricks. Teddy Haynes, City of Kilgore electrician, wired the first derricks, and then enlisted Mark Bagwell of Bagwell Electric to continue the work. Charles Miller was then hired for the erection and maintenance of the derricks. All the derricks owned by KHPF were made possible by donors. Maintenance, electricity, permanent down-lights, Christmas lights are all provided by KHPF, which raises money in a variety of ways to make it possible. In the last few years, to keep the stars shining, KHPF has been fortunate to receive funds from the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) fund administered by the City of Kilgore.

Thanks to all the people through the years that have worked to build, preserve and protect the derricks for all to enjoy. -Kilgore Magazine
The Happy New Year banner was purchased in 1992 by KHPF using proceeds from t-shirt sales. The first Derrick Committee Chair was Amanda Nobles (1987-1996). This Committee was responsible for the first 26 derricks. Sue Brown originated the Historical Plaques adorning the Derricks. The second Derrick Committee Chair was Jim Hollingsworth (1996-2002). His Committee was responsible for the next 17 derricks. Sue Brown and Gem Meacham procured the Historical Plaques. The third Derrick Committee chair was William Villyard (2002 to 2005). His Committee was responsible for 4 derricks. The fourth Derrick Committee Chair was Tom Conner (2005 until Tom became President and Marian Richardson became Chair. The current Chair is Darryl Gilcoat. Others serving on the committee are Martha Clark, Billy Humphrey, Jimmy Climer, John Bolton and until last year BJ Clark. Other “derrick notables” are Eddy Galloway of Overton and his late wife, Marianna Whittington Galloway, who donated 8 steel derricks of the first 17 erected. Mr. Galloway located and contacted owners to procure other derricks the early years.
