Dixie Overland Highway 1914
Meridian Highway 1914
Bankhead Highway 1914
In 1926, before numbered highways, there were National Trails and other posted roads. Trails had official pole markings posted along the routes, such as Dixie-Overland Highways (DOH), now US 80 and I-20. In recent years, historic US highways in several states have been designated state highways, influenced by the speed oriented interstates. On US 80 for example, in historic Van Horn, where the route comes off I-20, the famous Main Street has been designated as part of a Business I-20 loop. US 80 from Dallas to Ft. Worth Texas is now Texas 180. US 75 (I-45) from Dallas to Houston is now Texas 75. US 67 and US 90 are still pretty much intact. Route 66 architect Tom Snyder observed that traveling was more important than the destination, being on the road was more interesting than arriving: that the road is a destination in itself.

DISCOVER OTHER “MOTHER ROADS” OF AMERICA The mother roads of America are not only the Lincoln Highway and Route 66, but the great transcontinental routes of Route 80 and 90, originally called the Dixie Over Land and the Old Spanish Trail highways. All southbound highways such as Route 67, the Bankhead Highway, and Route 75, the Meredian Highway, feed into Routes 80 and 90 which run through a section rich in historic romance, observes Richard F. Weingroff of the Federal Highway Administration. Routes 80 and 90 bind together all of the former Spanish territories of the U. S., from Florida to California.
microcosm of America, and a great way to connect with the land and its people, observes JoAnn Vervinck, a landscape architect. Along them you can see the relics of another time, when there was “auto architecture.”
Now paralleled by interstates, in the 1920s these were mostly dirt and gravel roads. US 90 had 40 miles of ferries as it came across the southern states on its way to California. It and US 80 followed the routes of the wagon road surveys of the 1860’s.
The Byways get you into the downtowns, on the Main Streets, and around the courthouse squares.
Through these several routes, East Texas is a part of the great sweep of American history. Other early routes, each with their own names, exist in East Texas, all the way down to local dirt roads which were paved to become a part of Texas farm to market roads. They are all a part of the scenic and historic byways of East Texas. These roads are a
Enjoy a more leisurely drive, and observe the historical and cultural relics such as gas stations, tourist courts, diners, bridges. In East Texas you see historical and cultural relics in pioneer log cabins, tourist courts with individual cottages like in the early 30’s movies, to shotgun houses of the oil fields and bayous.
Roads that carried wagon trains west from the port of Jefferson to build up cities like Dallas and the great ranches in West Texas have a romance of their own. Nostalgia exists in cafes, service stations and motels which survive from earlier times. reviving memories of past generations.
Rivers slowed traffic along early trails and US highways. There were more than 40 miles of ferries on OST (US 90) in the 1920’s. This 1928 photo shows a ferry and in the foreground a bridge being constructed along an East Texas road.
These routes are still waiting for those with a spirit to venture and a liking for friendly people and uncrowded, scenic roads. They'll be great for fall foliage and spring flower jaunts, and just to travel on dreamy summer days.

US 82 begins on the Atlantic Ocean at Brunswick, GA, comes across the South, enters Texas from Arkansas, and travels along Texas’ Red River Valley opposite the Choctaw Indian Nation in Oklahoma and finally ends in Las Cruces, NM. “Hoss” Cartwright was born along this route. It goes past arsenals, ranches, imported Italian fountains, early cattle baron Chisum’s monument, Indian forts, “Mr. Sam” Rayburn's home and museum, grainfields, a
giant lake's shores, Ike's birthplace, and connects with the California Trails’ beginnings. US 67 begins in Sabula, Iowa, near Chicago, and ends in Presidio, Texas, on the Mexican border. From the piney woods on the Arkansas-Texas state line to the western grand prairie: see an arsenal of peaches and blueberries and old homes, record bass lakes, music boxes and a museum to dairying, trails of autumn, outlets, antiques, chocolate-covered fruit cakes, salutes to cotton days, rodeos, skyscrapers, movie studios and wax museums.

US 69 begins in Albert Lea, Minnesota and ends in Port Arthur, Texas. Passing through Choctaw country it enters Texas at giant Lake Texoma, passes through Red River Valley towns, down through breadbasket blacklands to bakeries and outlets and antique malls, into the piney woods, with dogwoods, azaleas and rosefields, and Civil War camps, to high look-
outs and Cherokee Indian history, and footbridges and Texas' antique railroad, to the El Camino Real's highest town. Midway, it travels on through national forests past a forest museum and great lakes to the Big Thicket and its wild orchids, quaint villages, and canoeing streams. Irrigation channels lead to the rice fields, and to cities with museums and Cajun influence where the Neches and Sabine rivers run to the sea.

You could drive it in three hours on I-20, but you would miss Old South towns, antique capitals, the world’s largest trades day, rose gardens, a museum to the great East Texas Oil Field, mysterious Caddo Lake with Spanish moss and cypress decor, hills and yams and peaches, and tributes to Jim Reeves and Tex Ritter.

Dallas to Jacksonville
All Dallas can head for the Piney Woods by exiting I-45 in southeast Dallas on a four-lane highway that carries travelers along a very scenic high road by a retirement mecca, Cedar Creek Lake, through Athens to the southern terminus in Jacksonville. From there, the beautiful piney woods and interesting cities beckon from all directions.
Winter Texans know this route well, traveling through Oklahoma mountains (Kiamichi Country) on the Indian Nation Turnpike to Hugo, then down to Paris, TX, the northern terminus of TX 19, down to the southern terminus on I-45 at Huntsville. This route travels through special East Texas cities as Paris, Sulphur Springs, Canton, Athens, Palestine, Crockett and Huntsville, full of museums, great shopping, Sam Houston Statue.
