Michael Fassbender to be honoured by the town he calls home FROM the bright lights, glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the warm embrace of the town he calls home, Michael Fassbender is to be honoured in Killarney this evening with the greatest accolade the town he grew up in can bestow. He will be inducted to the Order of Innisfallen in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the film industry which has seen him nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs and, in the process, for availing of every opportunity to promote Killarney on an international scale. The 39-year-old actor will be feted by the town’s Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and the Killarney Municipal Area Council at a reception at Muckross House in Killarney National Park. The award will be presented to the star of such movie blockbusters as 12 Years A Slave, Hunger, Steve Jobs, Prometheus, Frank, Shame, Macbeth and Jane Eyre and
the event will be followed by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce gala blacktie ball Michael’s family home is in Fossa, where his parents, Josef and Adele, still reside. He was once an altar boy at the nearby Prince of Peace Church in Fossa and he attended the local national school before going on to St Brendan’s College and, later, successfully chasing his dream to become one of the world’s most in-demand actors. He was bitten by the acting bug when he joined the Bricriú Theatre Company, run by local man Donie Courtney, in Killarney, and he later moved to London which is still his base. The Order of Innisfallen is presented annually to recipients who have made a significant contribution to the economy of Killarney. Previous recipients include singer Daniel O’Donnell who attracts thousands of fans to his concerts in
Killarney celebrates its heroes
OCTOBER is shaping up to be a month for honouring our home-grown heroes. Let’s start with today as excitement reaches fever pitch in Killarney which is rolling out the red carpet for A-list star Michael Fassbender who is in town to accept the sought-after Order of Innisfallen honour at Muckross House. Later in the evening, the acclaimed actor will be guest of honour at the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce’s inaugural black-tie ball. This evening also, applause will reverberate in the INEC as charity champions are feted during the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle presentation and dinner dance.
Ricochet back towards town, where last Sunday cheers rang out for the All Ireland winning Kerry minor football squad who took a well-deserved bow as they were honoured at the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football Championship quarter-finals in Fitzgerald Stadium. Last but not least, on Monday it was the turn of Ireland’s hugely popular Olympic silver medallists, Gary and Paul O’Donovan, whose achievements were celebrated during the Spar/Eurospar Retailers conference at the Europe Hotel & Resort. Question
My mother is in hospital and I will need to provide full-time care for at least 6 months when she gets out. What is available for people in my situation? Answer

Killarney Advertiser 07.10.16
There are several entitlements available to you. In order for you to qualify, the person you are caring for (your mother) must be deemed to be in need of full-time care and attention. This decision will be made by the Department of Social Protection, based on information provided by your mother’s GP. If you are working at present and will be taking time off to care, you may be eligible for carer's leave of up to 2 years. You must have worked for your employer for a continuous period of 12 months to qualify for this leave. While you are on carer’s leave, you are entitled to get credited social insurance contributions to maintain your PRSI record. You are entitled to annual leave and public holidays in respect of the first 13 weeks of carer’s leave. Your employer cannot dismiss you or victimise you for exercising your right to carer’s leave. You may also be entitled to Carer’s Benefit from the Department of Social Protection, if you have enough PRSI contributions to qualify. If you do not qualify for Carer’s Benefit, you may qualify for a means-tested Carer’s Allowance. If you get Carer's Allowance, you are entitled to a Free Travel Pass. You may also qualify for the Household Benefits Package if you live with the person you are caring for. There is also an annual Carer’s Support Grant of €1,700, formerly known as the Respite Care Grant, which is paid to full-time carers in June each year. Even if you are not getting any other social welfare payment, you can qualify for this grant if you fulfil the conditions. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Killarney quiz and auction in aid of homelessness crisis Good news for scientists looking for extra-terrestrial life Trevor O’Donoghue reports on a recent discovery on Jupiter’s moon
AT THE end of September, scientists from NASA, using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, announced that they had discovered water vapour plumes on Jupiter's moon, Europa. The plumes extend more than 100 miles into space. The discovery was announced in a hastily arranged press conference amidst excitable rumours that NASA had discovered aliens. No aliens were forthcoming, but the discovery is certainly is good news for planetary scientists looking for extra-terrestrial life. Europa, slightly smaller than earth's moon, is hypothesised to have a liquid water ocean beneath a thick crust of ice, kept warm by tidal interactions between Europa and Jupiter. NASA’s hunt for life outside of our planet has traditionally been focused on Mars, and that work is still ongoing with landers and orbiters observing the planet in ever-greater detail. However, moons with liquid oceans beneath the surface such as Enceladus (a moon of Saturn) and now Europa have become the next step in the quest for life. The only life in the universe that we know of, is life on Earth. All this life is dependent on water. As our knowledge of life on our planet increases, so too does the range of habitats where we find life. Life is resilient and adaptable and small microorganisms have been found in thriving in extreme environments
14
Killarney Advertiser 07.10.16
once thought too hostile to support life. Expensive space missions to Europa to drill through the icy crust in the hope of finding life are now being rewritten to allow for more economically viable missions to “catch a whiff” of life in the vapour as they fly through. Europa was discovered by Galileo in 1610 when he turned a telescope on Jupiter. From mid October Jupiter appears in the predawn sky and curious readers with a decent pair of binoculars can spot Europa as one of four tiny dots of light strung out on either side of the planet.
CALLING all quiz whizzes – a table quiz and auction fundraiser has been planned to help in a charity initiative planned by two well-known Killarney businesspeople. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Kate O’Leary and Councillor Niall Kelleher will both spend a night sleeping out to help raise funds and awareness of the homelessness crisis that is sweeping the country. Their involvement is part of Focus Ireland campaign which will see prominent business interests and public representatives sleeping out, in either Cork or Dublin, on October 21 to shine a light on the homelessness crisis. They have both set a target of raising at least €5,000 for the cause and, to help them achieve that goal, they will host a table quiz in The Laurels on Thursday, October 13. The entry fee is €50 for a table of five and the event will commence at 8pm. Some fantastic prizes will be auctioned on the night and there will also be a super auction at which a number of valuable and impressive prizes will come under the auctioneer’s gavel.
Kerry Deer Society hosts annual walks THE annual Kerry Deer Society deer rut observation walks will take place next week. The first, on Wednesday, October 12, will meet at King’s Bridge, opposite St Mary’s Cathedral, at 5.45pm. The lowland walk will take approximately one hour. Meanwhile, on Sunday, October 16, the mountain walk will meet at Torc upper car park on the Old Kenmare Road at 2pm. You are advised to bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothing. Members and non-members of the Kerry Deer Society are welcome.

Heights Hotel Killarney has the recipe for success
www.sneemhotel.com
WELL done to the team at the Heights Hotel Killarney which has been crowned Best Hotel Carvery in Ireland. This is the second year running that the Heights Hotel has won not only the Munster title but the All-Ireland title for serving carvery. The winners were unveiled by Welsh international rugby referee Nigel Owens at the Knorr Great Carvery of the Year Grand Final at the Herbert Park Hotel in Dublin. The Elm Tree in Glounthaune, Cork, took the prize for Best Pub Carvery at the awards. Launched in 2010 by Unilever Food Solutions Ireland, Knorr Great Carvery of the Year is an all-island search for Ireland’s best pub and hotel carvery. Recent research carried out by Unilever found that carvery is still hugely popular with Irish people. Two in every three eat carvery meals on a regular basis, with 25% eating carvery at least once a week. The research also emphasised that pub and hotel food remain serious business with over 50% of people choosing carvery as the preferred destination for a weekend family meal or Sunday lunch. Business development chef at Unilever Food Solutions Mark McCarthy said: “The standard of entry to the competition was amazing. All of the finalists in the competition proved to be of an exceptionally high standard in terms of value for money, food quality and customer service. “I would like to thank The Heights Hotel in Killarney and The Elm Tree in Cork for their excellence in offering the best carveries in the country. Winning the award is much more than just a well-deserved nod for the hard work and dedication it takes to operate at the highest level in our industry, it is a reflection of the appreciation shown by customers as the public also has a say in deciding who goes through to the competition.” Now in its seventh year, the nationwide KNORR Great Carvery of the Year competition is firmly established as the premier carvery competition on Ireland and Northern Ireland’s culinary calendar. The two overall winning venues will each receive PR and Marketing support as well as a specially commissioned wall plaque to inform customers that they are about to sit down and enjoy the best carvery in Ireland.

The celebration will unfold in the Claddagh Ring in Hendon. Valerie captures the people and places of the Reeks on camera AWARD-WINNING Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan has immortalised the faces and places of Ireland’s highest mountain range. The MacGillycuddy's Reeks: People and Places of Ireland’s Highest Mountain Range charts the rich diversity of its people and landscape. “Despite their increasing popularity amongst hillwalkers and climbers, the mountains’ remote and marginal nature is their commanding characteristic,” said Valerie, who is herself a keen mountaineer. The design and layout of the book is by Cathal Cudden, Bright Idea, and it will be officially launched by broadcaster Frank Lewis and Patricia Deane, rural recreation officer, South Kerry Development Partnership, on Saturday, October 15, at 6.30pm in Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe. The people of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks are the dominant feature of the book. We see them honouring the traditions of The Biddies one of the oldest and most colourful customs in Ireland, a blend of pagan and Christian pageantry, held each year on the first day of February. The book also stars Eileen Cronin of Cronin’s Yard, Mealis, Beaufort, who lives in the foothills of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, at the entrance to the Hag’s Glen, the traditional starting point for ascents of Carrantuohill and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Eileen, originally from Ballyledder, Beaufort, married Joe Cronin, a fifth-generation sheep farmer, in 1964. The Cronin home and yard became the base for the Kerry Mountain Rescue team, the local Gardaí and the Civil Defence whenever the teams were called out on a mountain rescue. Eileen remembers fondly the early days of the mountain rescues when the team would arrive to their home. “We had great craic, no matter how serious the rescue was, the house was always open. We’d stay up all night, waiting for news. I loved making the tea and sandwiches, keeping the fire going. We were all great friends and still are today. Members of the Rescue Team and Gardaí would still call to me. We had great laughs,” she said. A chapter is also dedicated to the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Valerie will be donating a sizeable portion of the proceeds of this book to the team.

What does Budget 2017 have in store for your business? LEADING Kerry chartered accountancy firm OCKT Ltd will hold a budget briefing next week to examine the impact of the Budget on businesses. The forum will commence at 1pm on Wednesday, October 12, in The Malton Hotel, Killarney. In conjunction with Killarney Chamber of Commerce, OCKT Ltd is hosting the briefing to share its thinking on the key developments from Budget 2017 with clients and members of the Kerry business community. The briefing will explain the salient points from the Budget in direct relation to businesses, as opposed to individuals, and will outline tax planning initiatives that can be taken prior to December 31, so businesses are primed to tackle the budgetary changes as they are introduced. Speaking at the briefing will be Director of OCKT Ltd Marcus Treacy, who specialises in corporate finance and corporate recovery. “This briefing will be a good opportunity for businesses to stay ahead of the budgetary measures, no matter what the outcome on October 11,” said

Killarney urged to support vital service for people with MS THE vital treatments and therapies available to people with multiple sclerosis in the Killarney could be in grave danger if it weren’t for the support of such fundraisers as the annual Old Kenmare Road walk. The Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland will step it out for the 14th annual walk on Sunday, October 9. Killarney Advertiser caught up with some of those who benefit from the therapies funded by the walk, at the Cheshire Home this week. All ages are catered for, from teenagers upwards, with between 25 and 30 people with multiple sclerosis attending the centre every week. Physiotherapy sessions are available on Mondays while on Wednesdays three therapies are available, reflexology, acupuncture and massage. “What’s crucial is that participants enjoy the social aspect of it, with a cup of tea, a scone and a chat,” said Rosemary Nolan of the South Kerry branch of MS Ireland. “It is vital the fundraisers such as the annual walk are supported as otherwise the therapies will be cut down.” If you would like to take part in the walk, sponsorship cards are available from John O’Shea, 087-234882; Pat O’Neill, 064-6631982; Ray O’Callaghan, 087-2917262; or Linda Pigott, 087-9224655. Niall pushes the boat out for sparkling proposal THE setting could not have been more romantic for Niall Kelleher’s proposal to his girlfriend Linda Gordon. Rathmore native Niall popped the question during a boat trip through the three Lakes of Killarney. Niall organised the scenic trip in order to surprise Linda, from Artigallivan, with a marriage proposal. He had originally planned to propose on Innisfallen Island but as he was departing Ross Castle on a later boat, he resorted to finding a Plan B. Niall got in touch by mobile phone with boatman Donal “Dux” O’Donoghue Junior who suggested the Old Weir Bridge. Donal promptly contacted his uncle Dermot O’Donoghue, who ensured the couple disembarked at the perfect spot and Niall went down on bended knee at the Old Weir Bridge. He had chosen two rings, at Seodoiri Na Riochta (Kingdom Jewellers) on Main Street. “I covered all bases but Linda ended up choosing the one I would have picked out myself!” said Niall. Linda was surprised and delighted and the newly engaged the couple boarded the boat once more, bound for Lord Brandon’s Cottage where they enjoyed celebratory Irish coffees. Engagement celebrations continued that night in Niall’s bar, Connie K’s in Rathmore. Wishing the couple well were Niall’s son Noah, four, and Linda’s daughter Portia, eight, along with both sets of parents Monica and Eugene Gordon and Julie and Paudie Kelleher. Businessman and entrepreneur Niall is a member of Kerry County Council and is deputy Lord Mayor of Killarney, while Linda is a solicitor with her own practice Torc Solicitors in Killarney. Every good wish to them both! Niall Kelleher, Rathmore, and Linda Gordon, Artigallivan, celebrating their engagement on Sunday.

Muckross to host John B Keane’s The Successful TD
Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy who star in John B Keane’s The Successful TD.
THE hilarious antics in John B Keane’s book The Letters of a Successful TD form the basis of a must-see play being staged in Killarney next week. Head to Muckross Schoolhouse on Friday, October 14, or Saturday, October 15, where the world premier of The Successful TD will unfold. The plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tull McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dáil in the "October Elections”. Written by John B Keane in 1967, the lines see the playwright display his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today. Peppered with Keane's gallery of madcap characters this show will have you laughing at politics (in a good way) from the start. Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in bed or Lisdoonvarna, but his archenemy Flannery the local schoolteacher plans to scupper the election for Tull. To quote John B Keane’s immortal words: “Any man with a vote is a man to be respected. I’ll play with them, lie to them, sing dumb about them while I have a chance of a vote. That’s my livelihood. Don’t give me no more stink about the truth. Christ told the truth and they crucified Him…” Based on The Letters of A Successful TD and An Irish Minister of State by John B Keane, the work has been adapted for the stage by the production’s stars Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy and director Michael Scott. The shows commence at 8pm. Tickets, €20, are available by calling 064-6670165 and 064-6630804.

Bride and groom return to The Gleneagle to celebrate golden anniversary
WHAT better way to celebrate 50 years of love and marriage than by returning to the place where it all began? Having held their wedding breakfast in The Gleneagle Hotel on September 21, 1966, Mr and Mrs Michael and Joan Griffin returned to the famous Killarney venue to mark their golden wedding anniversary. Michael Griffin and Joan Mullins, both originally from Tralee, were married in St John’s Parish Church in Tralee on September 21, 1966, before travelling onto Killarney afterwards where The Gleneagle hosted the newlyweds and 80 members of their family and friends. “Our wedding breakfast took place in The Gleneagle Hotel, where we were treated very well and so decided to book the same venue 50 years later,” said Joan Griffin. The happy couple, who now reside in Caherciveen, were once again joined for a celebratory meal at the hotel by 80 friends and family members including their children and grandchildren. “We were overwhelmed with our party as were all our friends too,” said Joan. “The staff looked after us so well and management were excellent; we thank them for a very memorable occasion.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
ELVIS IN KILLARNEY’S HOLIDAY INN
It’s time to speak up for the Irish language
He slipped in from reception, all decked out in Elvis gear, The white suit and medallions, and he ordered up a beer. A multi-coloured garland from Hawaii hung round his neck, He really looked the business, and he didn’t give a feck! Folks at the bar took a double take; could this guy be for real, He was, t’was just another gig, and he turned out the real deal. He started off with ‘Wooden Heart’ and then he did ‘Hound Dog.’ It truly was exciting; I heard a woman say, ‘My God, You’d swear the King was in the bar; he sounds just like him too.’ Then he Aw, Haw, Hawed through ‘Good Luck Charm’ and banged out ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’ He had all the moves and gestures, and his right leg really twitched, You’d swear you were in Vegas, amongst the gaudy and the rich. And when he warbled, ‘Wise Men Say Only Fools Rush In’ You were right there in the Fifties, and back in school again. He brought us through those teenage years, from when Old Shep was a pup, And when he died, the whole world cried, and we were all shook up. When he sang ‘It’s Now or Never’ a tear leaked from my eye, For it was nearing closing time, and soon he’d say goodbye. He finished off with ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and man, he left us reeling, Then a voice came over the intercom, Elvis has left the building. It really was emotional, a rock train back in time, You remembered girls who dumped you, and those for whom you pined. You learnt to jive to ‘Teddy Bear’ and lurch to ‘Love me Tender’ Oh boy, it was a great time, and I re-lived it this September!
WHEN are the Irish going to get over their inferiority complex about their own language? It's shocking to hear of a young man being reprimanded for using Irish in his workplace or young footballers being forbidden to use it during training! I have always found it fascinating and attractive to overhear people conversing in Irish. Wouldn't Spain, France and Italy lose a lot of their attraction if everyone spoke English all the time? A country is defined largely by its language and any country lucky enough to have its native language still extant (to whatever degree) should nurture and promote its survival. Let's face it, any young person leaving school today has a good grasp of the language, so why waste all those years of learning by letting it die away instead of keeping it alive and having some fun with it? I would be in agreement with the idea of a change in the way Irish is taught in schools. I think there should be far more focus on conversational Irish (since not everybody needs to be able to write in Irish) and students should be examined orally.

Please help end monkey experiments IN EUROPE 10,000 primates a year are used in experiments. They’re imprisoned in laboratory cages, drugged and infected with deadly diseases, cut open, burned or electrocuted. We don’t need these cruel tests. Animals rarely serve as good models for the human body. And cutting-edge research methods that don’t use animals often give far more accurate results. The European Union is deciding right now whether to change its policy on testing on monkeys. Your can make a difference by urging them to make the right decision. HOW THE EUROWAVE WORKS
Eurowave achieves toning, shaping and inch loss through the use of Electro Muscle Stimulation, explains Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
ELECTRO MUSCLE STIMULATION (EMS) is a very safe and simple procedure that uses painless faradic waves to stimulate the muscles and make them work – much like you would at the gym. However, there is no resulting build-up of lactic acid, which means you aren’t sore after a treatment! The achieved muscle tone is real. After a course of 12 sessions you will look and feel better, your core muscles will be strengthened, toned and tightened and even working out at the gym can be easier, making sustaining the results completely possible. Why Eurowave? Eurowave has become widely accepted that core strength is very important to our overall body health. You use your core in everything you do. Fewer people suffer from prolonged and nagging back pain once their core is strong. While many new exercises do improve your core strength,
Eurowave still does it faster and safer! Do you hate doing sit-ups, crunches or leg lifts, because it hurts, or they don't work? Eurowave penetrates the deepest part of your muscle, which enables you to get a full muscle contraction.
How does Eurowave work? The Eurowave utilises a pulsating faradic wave, which "works out" the chosen muscle group. Eurowave works the same as an isometric exercise. The 18-minute abdominal session is completely effortless, and is equivalent over 200 perfect sit-ups! Unique to the machine is the "duty cycle" which allows variation in depth of penetration of the wave, and allows for a variety of additional applications including the successful treatment of back pain and ailments including sciatica, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis and certain other medical conditions.
At Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we are offering a free trial for one week only. Call 064-6632966 now to book.

SHOP FOR YOUR HEALTH DAY
AT THIS time of year thoughts are already turning towards the gift-buying sprees that loom on the horizon, but first why not turn your thoughts towards drawing up a shopping list when it comes to safeguarding your health?
This fantastic concept was dreamed up by Billy DF O’Sullivan and his team at the HeartBeat support group in Killarney. They have teamed up with Killarney Outlet Centre, the primary care teams and the Health Service Executive to present a unique event entitled Shop For Health Day at the outlet centre today, Friday, October 7. The event takes place from 10am to 6pm and will offer a whole host of services and advice for free. “The object of the day is to provide easy access to health experts in a relaxed atmosphere and to get people talking about their health and picking up information that normally might not be as readily available to them,” said organiser Billy DF O’Sullivan of HeartBeat. “The units in the centre will also be involved with many health-orientated offers available on the day.”

Quiz is the answer as Claire spearheads fundraisers for Crumlin
KEEN to generate funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Claire Enright enlisted the help of her colleagues at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel. By year’s end, Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa aims to raise €3,000-plus for Our Lady's Children's Hospital. “This hospital is an amazing establishment and a most deserving charity very close to our hearts,” said Claire. “We are doing a few things to raise the money. We have a jar of sweets kindly donated by Claire Enright, Aghadoe Aunty Nellie’s Sweet Shop and I am taking part Heights Hotel & Spa. in the Killarney Mini Marathon this Saturday. We will have a team day out where we will go up Cardiac Hill and we are also planning a coffee morning for November 8.” This coming week, the general public can contribute to the series of fundraisers, with table quiz taking place in the Killarney Avenue Hotel this Monday, October 10, at 9pm. “All are welcome to the table quiz and Deputy Danny Healy-Rae will be the special guest,” said Claire. “We promise excellent spot prizes on the night. The entry fee is €40 for a table of four. “Crumlin is a charity close to many – quite a few of the team have had to bring children there. The team there are amazing!” said Claire. “Nothing is a problem with them and they really do go out of their way to help everyone. Kids shouldn’t be getting cancer or life-threatening illnesses – so if we can do something to help these kids – it’s the least we can be doing! Parents shouldn’t be outliving their children – it’s heart-breaking!” For more information contact Claire on 064-6631766.
Wellness exhibition at Manor West Shopping Centre
MANOR WEST Shopping Centre and Retail Park will host a information exhibition on Saturday, October 15, from 12 to 5pm. The exhibition aims to inform the local community and visitors to the centre of the organisations, services, sports clubs and the likes that are available right on their doorstep. An array of information stands will be available in the main shopping centre, giving shoppers the opportunity to gather information and chat to representatives on topics such as wellness, health, fitness as well as education. The event, which is free of charge, will also shed some light on the support services that are currently available locally to help people stay healthy in body and mind. Derek Rusk, centre manager, said: ”The hope is that by creating this awareness within the community of Tralee, it will encourage anyone who is looking for more information to come along and chat to the various organisations, to connect with them and hopefully find new avenues for hobbies as well as keeping well in themselves – something that can be more challenging as we approach the winter months. We hope that it will prompt people to join a club, get involved in a local organisation or to volunteer.” For more information see www.manorwest.ie

TOMMY TIERNAN will be in town this December when he will be found wandering the corridors of Killarney’s Gleneagle Hotel for three nights. Grace Notes In praise of magical melodies
Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on how festive songs can uplift us no matter what the season
ANYONE who knows me knows that I am absolutely obsessed with all things Christmas. As soon as we turn the corner into Autumn I feel that we are on the home stretch to my favourite time of year! What is so special about Christmas? Well, there's the obvious; the parties, get-togethers, shopping, great food and beautiful decorations. I too enjoy all of the above but my real love for Christmas is in its music. Christmas music has this magic power that can transport us back to a simpler time. As we grow older we can lose the ability to tap into that childhood sense of wonder that is at its most powerful
at Christmas time. Christmas in my house was always made special by the little touches my mother added to various shelves and mantelpieces throughout the house. She would create these little “scenes” and surround them with fairy lights. One of my favourite things to do on December nights was to turn off the main room lights and lie under the Christmas tree while Cliff Richard's Mistletoe and Wine gently crackled on the record player. The twinkling lights around the room combined with this beautiful music transported me to a place of wonder and excitement.
the smell of cooking and the sound of carols playing in the sitting room. This is a very special moment that I still make sure to soak up every year. I love the traditions that Christmas holds and, even though they may change as we grow older, traditions like these will always feel like home.
Before I finish, I am going to let you in on a little secret...when I feel blue, no matter the month, I treat myself to some Christmas carols. It is my own personal pick-me-up and it works every time! If you too love Christmas songs then maybe give this a try some time. Let these festive melodies give you that warm and fuzzy feeling, be it in December or July. There is magic in those melodies and I think we can all use some of that from time to time. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 17:11-19: The cure of the lepers is not just a physical cure, it also brought the people healed back from exclusion into the community. Perhaps you have experienced the movement from exclusion to inclusion. What was it like for you to be accepted once again when you had felt excluded? Who were the people that brought about this change for you? For whom you have been able to do this, perhaps by healing a rift with a friend, or by listening to the opinion of someone you had dismissed out of hand, or by opening the door in some other way to another? Some people work hard at breaking down barriers in society, seeking inclusion for those who find themselves labelled as lepers by society or by a section of society. Where have you seen this happening? Who has been doing this kind of work? Where is the Good News in such action? When we do good for another we may not do it for the thanks we hope to get, but it can hurt when no gratitude is shown. How have you experienced the positive effects of thanks given and received? John Byrne OSA, Veritas
MUSINGS
AS WE know only too well, prejudice, ignorance, betrayal and social class can create apparently insurmountable divisions among us. But traditional barriers often crumble in the face of a common crisis or a great opportunity for a better life. This is particularly obvious nowadays in groups helping with recovery from addiction. It is not surprising, then, that it happened among the lepers of Christ’s time. Lepers were total outcasts, banned from all contact with the settled community. Our expectations about our entitlements because of our family background or our education or hard work, often blind us to how gratuitous all God’s gifts to us really are. Failure to appreciate the graciousness of such goodness leads to a hardening of the arteries of love that quickly deprives the heart of contentment, generosity and joy. Happiness is the flowering of appreciation and giving thanks. The Samaritan leper knew this. He seized his opportunity. Saying thanks opened up a new relationship with Jesus for him. Where are the other nine? Where are we? Fr Tom Clancy, Veritas

The Provocateur WHO MATTERS? “BLACK lives matter,” chants the assembled crowd. “Blue lives matter,” counter the police. All lives matter, I think. But, do they? Of course, we all say all people matter. If this is true, why are we not all directly involved in feeding the hungry and housing the homeless? Why do we respond “not in my neighbourhood” if housing for Travellers or a care facility for the mentally ill is proposed? If all lives matter, why do we support war of any kind, anywhere? Do we really believe that we can bomb peace into reality? All lives matter as long as I am not impacted personally. A hospital bed for every patient, no question – but do not raise my taxes. A clean environment for the good of all – but only if I can drive the car I want where I want. Yes, all lives matter – as long as it is mine. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + BE NOT THE FIRST TO TRY THE NEW... Microsoft has been urged to pay compensation to customers that have suffered computer malfunctions when upgrading to its new software Windows 10. Since the company released the software last year it has been plagued by complaints, with customers claiming their computers upgraded without their permission and, in some cases, completely stopped working. Which?, the consumer watchdog, has told Microsoft to “honour consumers’ rights” and compensate those who have suffered from problems, including lost files, email accounts no longer syncing and failed WiFi connection. It said Microsoft customers had also complained that theirwebcams suddenly stopped working, as did speakers and printers in the wake of the upgrade. “Many people are having issues with Windows 10 and we believe Microsoft should be doing more to fix the problem,” said Alex Neill, director

Two new millionaires created at Hannah Mary’s Country Store “WHO’S got the money?” was the question on everyone’s lips around Mid Kerry this week. As soon as it was confirmed at the weekend that two ticket holders, from Kerry and Donegal, were the winners of Saturday’s Lotto jackpot, worth €4,532,646, excitement reached fever pitch in Tullig, Killorglin, which is where the Kerry ticket was bought. Now, a family is some €2.2 million wealthier thanks to the wonderful windfall. The winning ticket, a Quick Pick selection, was sold in Hannah Mary’s Country Store XL in Tullig, Killorglin, whose owners said there was huge excitement in the community following the win. The winners, described by the National Lottery as a family syndicate of two, have decided to remain anonymous after picking up the massive cheque on Monday.

of policy at Which? “We rely heavily on our computers to carry out daily activities so, when they stop working, it is frustrating and stressful.” Which? found that 12 per cent of Microsoft customers that had downloaded Windows 10 ended up reverting to an earlier version of the operating system after experiencing problems. The watchdog surveyed 5,596 British customers, 2,500 of whom at upgraded to the latest Microsoft system. Microsoft has been criticised for “nagging” people to upgrade to Windows 10 with persistent alerts and notifications before, in some instances, appearing to upgrade without permission. Which? has told Microsoft to “improve its customer service” and “repair and compensate” customers that have experienced any loss as a result of the upgrade. It said that the same rights apply to digital goods as to more traditional products.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD A FAIR DEAL? The Nursing Homes Support Scheme is a scheme of financial support for people who need long-term nursing home care. Under the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, you will make a contribution towards the cost of your care and the State will pay the balance. This applies whether the nursing home is public, private or voluntary. The HSE administers the Fair Deal Scheme within the resources available and in line with the Nursing Home Support Scheme legislation. Applicants cannot avail of State funding for a nursing home place prior to receiving approval of their Fair Deal application. Under the Nursing Home Support Scheme, prices charged by Private Nursing Homes are agreed between the Private Nursing Home and the National Treatment Purchase Fund. They are generally in the region of €1,000 per week. That’s a steep ask. The Financial Assessment looks at your income and assets in order to work out what your contribution to care will be. The HSE will then pay the balance of your cost of care. For example, if the cost of your care was €1,000 and your weekly contribution was €300, the HSE will pay the weekly balance of €700. This payment by the HSE is called State Support. The Financial Assessment looks at all of your income and assets. And therein lays the problem: I have always felt it was a ‘Fair Deal’ if you had nothing. However, if you have acquired assets over your life, you’ll pay through the nose, even after you’re dead! Income includes any earnings, pension income, social welfare benefits/ allowances, rental income, income from holding an office or directorship, income from fees, commissions, dividends or interest, or any income which you have deprived yourself of in the 5 years leading up to your application. Broadly speaking, an asset is any material property or wealth, including property or wealth outside of the State. If you are a member of a couple, the assessment will be based on half of the couple’s combined income and assets. For example, if a couple’s income was €600 per week, the assessment of the person needing care would be based on 50% of €600, or €300. In other words, the person needing care would be considered to have a total income of €300 per week. A couple is defined as (a) a married couple who are living together or (b) a heterosexual or same sex couple who are cohabiting as life partners for at least three years. The assessment will not take into
account the income of other relatives such as your children. Having looked at your income and assets, the Financial Assessment will work out your contribution to care. You will contribute 80% of your assessable income and 7.5% of the value of any assets per annum (5% of assets if the application was made prior to the 25th July 2013). However, the first €36,000 of your assets, or €72,000 for a couple, will not be counted at all in the financial assessment. Where your assets include land and property in the State, the 7.5% contribution based on such assets may be deferred and collected from your estate. This is an optional Nursing Home Loan element of the scheme which is legally referred to as “Ancillary State Support”. Your principal residence will only be included in the financial assessment for the first 3 years of your time in care. This is known as the 22.5% or ‘three year’ cap (15% if application was made prior to the 25th July 2013). It means that you will pay a 7.5% contribution based on your principal residence for a maximum of three years regardless of the time you spend in nursing home care. After 3 years, even if you are still getting long-term nursing home care, you will not pay any further contribution based on the principal residence. This ‘three year’ cap applies regardless of whether you choose to opt for the loan or not. In the case of a couple, the contribution based on the principal residence will be capped at 11.25% (7.5% if the application was made prior to the 25th July 2013) where one member of the couple remains in the home while the other enters long term nursing home care, i.e. the ‘three year’ cap applies. Where a person opts for the nursing home loan in respect of the principal residence, their spouse or partner can also apply to have the repayment of the loan deferred for their lifetime (see section 9). All other assets will be taken into account for as long as you are in care. It’s fine when you can plan but sometimes there’s no time to plan. For instance, a farmer may sign over his farm and, after 5 years, it’s no longer assessed as income or asset. Likewise a family residence. Now, the IFA are seeking changes. They don’t want the family farm to be considered an asset at all and they have a point. After all the farmer only manages the land and then it’s passed on to the next generation and while the farm may be an asset, its value can change dramatically.

Hurricane Matthew: Florida warned of ‘direct hit’ Florida residents have been warned to prepare for a “direct hit”, as Hurricane Matthew pounded the Bahamas after devastating parts of Haiti. Damage could be “catastrophic”, the state governor said. Evacuation orders have been issued along the coast. Matthew, with winds of 115mph (185km/h), is expected to strengthen and hit Florida as a Category Four storm, US officials say. It has swept across the Caribbean, with the worst of the damage in Haiti.

DNG Ted Healy celebrates landmark 10th anniversary THE doors to DNG Ted Healy first opened for business in 2006, a day principal Ted Healy remembers very well. Ted said: “We spent a considerable amount of time renovating our new offices at 11 New Street to marry both the existing business of James P Healy Insurances and the new estate agency business. It was a proud day when we first opened; particularly for my late father Jim, who was very excited by the new venture.” The market and indeed the Ted Healy. world, was in a very different place at the time, notes Ted. “Having opened at the peak of the market it took time to establish ourselves in Killarney. Not long after opening the market collapsed and the challenge became even more difficult,” he added. “Having come through what is widely regarded as the toughest cycle the property market has witnessed in this country, 10 years on DNG Ted Healy are at the forefront of the property market in Killarney.” Ted added: “As part of the DNG nationwide network we have grown stronger over the years and proud of the service we have been able to offer our clients. In the ever-changing age of technology, we are constantly updating our data systems in order to provide the very best service possible.” Ted Healy was a member of the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute (IAVI) since 2002, until their merger with The Society of Chartered Surveys (SCS) in 2011. He is now a member of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI). He was elected an associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2012. In December 2015 he was granted the honour of being accepted onto the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Valuer Registration as a Registered Valuer. He holds diplomas and certificates in Auctioneering, Valuation and Estate Agency from the Dublin Institute of Technology. To coincide with the 10-year celebrations, DNG Ted Healy is promoting the newest development of homes in the Killarney market with the opening of the showhouse at Bluebells Grove, Countess Road. Kerry the greenest county as €500m invested in wind energy THE Irish Wind Energy Association held its autumn conference yesterday (Thursday) in the INEC, Killarney. Some €500 million has been invested in Kerry’s wind energy to date, delegates were told, making the Kingdom a European leader for renewable energy integration with 315MW of wind energy installed throughout the county, representing enough capacity to power almost 205,000 Irish homes, according to new figures compiled by the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA). With approximately 1MW of installed wind energy for every 468 people in Kerry, figures reveal that the county has the highest integration of wind energy per capita in Ireland, making it the greenest county in the country. Kerry’s 315MW of installed wind energy are also contributing to a significant reduction in the county’s environmental impact, saving 323,000 tonnes of C02 emissions per annum in displacing pollutant heavy fossil fuels, representing a saving of over two tonnes per energy user in Kerry. This year’s event is being hosted in Kerry to honour the significant number of leading wind industry companies based across the county including Enercon, Moriarty, Wind Prospect, OES Environmental Consultants, Saorgus Wind Energy, TLI Group, and Malachy Walsh and Partners.

Bentley trials fuel delivery service A SCHEME called Filld for Bentley allows Bentley owners to order fuel to be delivered to their car via an app. And in the future, allow the car to place orders for fuel itself. Bentley has provided few details about specific scenarios (I wonder why…) but claims the fuel can be delivered “wherever and whenever the driver requires”. Performing this mundane task of filling up may not be fitting for a Bentley owner. The scheme is one of the first pieces of connected car technology that Bentley has showcased since the topic became a buzzword in the car industry. Bentley couldn't specify how long the fuel takes to be delivered, but the trial is happening in the US for three months, after which Bentley will assess the customer feedback – presumably as a precursor to rolling out the trial as a full, permanent scheme. You have to think at some point if all these mundane services eliminated in the future there will be no need for the 'Bentley' – there will be no need to go anywhere – we’ll just get the world delivered. What a boring world that would be…

2017 Citroen WRC team an Irish affair… CITROEN, the most successful WRC team in recent times is returning to world stage in 2017 with a strong Irish line-up. Citroen has named its drivers for its upcoming return to full factory status with the recently launched C3 WRC car, previously named Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle as one of its pairing. And Citroen has now confirmed he is to be joined for the two years by Waterford man Craig Breen, with co-driver Scott Martin, and Frenchman Stephane Lefebvre, alongside Gabin Moreau. Both SWRC champion Breen and WRC-3 champion Lefebvre ran in select rounds with PHSport's DS3 throughout this season, the former claiming a maiden podium in FInland. Citroen confirmed Breen and Lefebvre would be alternating behind the wheel of the C3 WRC during the early stages of the 2017 season, aiming to switch to a three-car roundby-round line-up "as soon as possible". Citroen, the most successful WRC in recent times is returning to world stage in 2017 with a strong Irish line-up.

BEYOND its historic value, the unexpected discovery of a lost treasure spurs a special kind of excitement. These moments reinforce the persistent belief that anyone, anywhere, can push a spade into the ground or pry open a long-sealed door...and strike gold. A dilapidated garage in the UK recently yielded just such a find: a 1964 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Coupé, untouched for decades — but beneath the detritus, remarkably well preserved. Relatives of its deceased owner discovered the car and turned to the vintage-car auction house H&H Classic for guidance. And on October 12, this old E type will take a star turn — mouse poo and all — at the H&H auction. Series I cars, between 1961 and 1964, are far and away the E-Types most prized by collectors. And because some 85% of Jaguar's sports car production was earmarked for export, most to left-hand-drive markets, this car happens to be especially rare: It is one of only 1,798 right-hand-drive 3.8-litre Coupés to emerge from the factory in Coventry. The late owner purchased the car as a gift for his wife in 1970. She drove it for a few years (the odometer reads 52,738 miles) before stowing it in the shed you see here. And there it sat. And sat. And sat. H&H reports this forlorn E type, finished in red over grey leather, includes "its original hand book, warranty card and service book. H&H estimates this barn-find E-Type will fetch between €45,000 and €55,000 when it crosses the block next month. Restored to perfection, the car could command £165,000 or more. Keep looking…

Aghdoe’s Mikie Galvin claims championship title CONGRATULATIONS to Aghadoe man Mikie Galvin on securing the title of Irish Tarmac Rally Championship Co-Driver last weekend at the International Cork 20 Rally. The Killarney man was co-driving for Bantry's Keith Cronin in their Citroen DS3 R5 and the pair were involved in a tense championship battle all weekend with Fermanagh's Alastair Fisher and the Moffett brothers, Josh and Sam, Co Monaghan. Congratulating Mikie on behalf of Killarney and District Motor Club, Johnny Hickey said the 23-year-old co-driver is following in the footsteps of his fellow club member Paul Nagle. “The opening stages around the Fermoy countryside were slippy and fast requiring a steady pace and precision driving. The crew led the event after day one by a only mere five seconds,” said Johnny. “On day two unfortunately they picked up a puncture on stage 12 dropping them back to fourth overall yet still collecting enough points to claim the title. “For Mikie, this is the highest achievement in Irish rallying. Congratulations and well done.”

O’DONOGHUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL
Spa and Legion desperate not to lose Adam Moynihan previews the O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final in which Legion take on Spa at Derreen tomorrow, Saturday, October 8, at 2pm
F
OR both Legion and Spa, the prospect of defeat in Saturday’s O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final doesn’t bear thinking about. Neither set-up has lived up to expectations in 2016 and being beaten by town rivals in their final game would be the worst possible way to end the campaign. Winning this game won’t be the making of anyone’s season – in truth, nothing short of winning the competition outright can save them now – but losing would be a devastating body blow that both sides will be desperate to avoid. Spa came into 2016 under new management but the goal remained the same: win the Intermediate Championship at all costs. Beaten finalists in 2012, 2014 and 2015, there was real hope within the club that this might finally be their year. Defeat to Kenmare in the second round, however, put an abrupt end to those aspirations. At this point in time, nothing is more important to Spa than the intermediate so being out of contention by April must have been a crushing blow to the players. Reeling from injuries to key members of the squad, their league form was inconsistent at best; the shock ten-point defeat to Glenflesk was particularly tough to take. To their credit they still managed to work themselves into contention for promotion going into the final day but, in the end, defeat to An Ghaeltacht consigned them to another season in Division 2.
Neighbours Legion will be joining them in the second tier following a very poor showing in the County League which saw them pick up just one win all year. Last November they were inches away from claiming their first County Championship title since 1946, but disheartening losses to Kenmare District and Kerins O’Rahillys saw them crash out in the early stages of this year’s tournament. The only silver lining was a victory over Rahillys in the quarter-final of the club championship which guaranteed their senior championship status for 2017. The achievements of 2015 were always going to be tough to match, especially with manager Peter Keane taking the Kerry minor job and the absence of some key players over the summer months, but few predicted such a sharp decline.
The East Kerry Championship has been dominated by the Crokes since the turn of the century and Rathmore are on the hunt for three-in-a-row. Given how the season has panned out so far, for both perennial favourites and underdogs alike, it would take a big turnaround for Spa or Legion to break that stranglehold this winter. A win on Saturday, however, would at the very least spare some blushes as the curtain falls on a year that both sets of players will be keen to forget.
Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy THE last weekend was a very busy weekend rugby wise as the start of October heralds the beginning of the Munster junior League for our seniors at Killarney Rugby Club, who made the long road trip to Dungarvan last Sunday, October 2. Unfortunately the lads lost on a scoreline of 11 points to 6 points with outhalf Padraig Sheahan scoring all of the Killarney points from the boot. Thankfully, the second penalty for Killarney helped the lads rescue a vital bonus point in the dying seconds of the match. The first home game in the league takes place at Aghadoe on October 23 against Fethard and District. So, let's get out and support the lads! Last Friday and Saturday our heady band of minis coaches travelled to the Institute of Technology Tralee to take part in the Munster Rugby Minis course. This was the first time the course was held in Tralee in some years and was very well attended with Killarney making up the largest contingent of coaches. It was a fantastic opportunity for newer coaches, who want to learn about coaching rugby to learn new skills in a fun setting. We assembled on Friday evening for the more intensive theory part of the course and spent the Saturday out on the training pitch learning new games, drills and we actually ended up playing pretty much a full on match at the end! It was great to see the new coaches getting stuck in and enjoying the course, while there were lots of more experienced coaches present who were polishing up on their skills! The minis kids will truly benefit from the enthusiasm of the coaches and the club must be commended for investing in the suture by facilitating such vital training for its coaches.
SOCCER UPDATE
Even Age Action Match Reports By Padraig Harnett GOALS GALORE IN THE JK SPORTS 12S
THERE was lots of action in all the 12 Premier divisions. In Premier 1 Killarney Celtic led twice but could not hold out. Eoghan Crowley and Calvin O’Sullivan put Celtic 2-0 up. Sean Doolin pulled the two back to level matters. Brian O’Sullivan again put Celtic ahead but Adam Murphy scored to get the Kilbrean side back to parity, From there Mastergeeha pushed ahead and goals from Jack O’Donoghue and David O’Leary gave them the points. Killorglin A were too strong for Killarney Athletic Blue. The Park were too strong for a young Tralee Dynamos side. Goals from Jimmy McClean and Andrew O’Doherty were not enough to give Killarney Celtic B anything from their game against Fenit who won 3-2. Listowel Celtic A were the winners in Premier 4 as
they defeated Park B. Camp Juniors were 5-3 winners in the 12 Division 1 at home to Killarney Celtic C who had CJ Daniels, Paudie Fitzgerald and Cillian O’Neill on the mark. FOUNDATION SPORTS 14S
Darragh Caplis had a good day hitting five for Park A against Mastergeeha. Killorglin’s Dylan Moriarty got the only goal in a 1-0 win over Killarney Celtic A. DIVISION 1
John Power with three and Peter Cosgrave, two, were the scorers for Ballyhar in a 5-4 win over Killorglin B. Fenit had a hat trick from Eddie McCarthy, a penalty from Niall Cassidy and a goal from James Baxter in their 5-2 win over Killarney Athletic. Rian O’Brien and Jason Lee were on the mark for Athletic. Killarney Celtic B and Park B shared the points
following a 2-2 draw. Simon Coffey got both Celtic goals with Leonid and Danny Fisher getting the Park’s goals. Tralee Dynamos and Inter Kenmare also shared the points as they drew two all. 16 PREMIER
Tralee Dynamos were 3-1 winners over Killarney Celtic with Leo Gaxha getting 2 and Mohamed Raheemi the third. The Park A had it easier against Killorglin. 16 DIVISION 1
Sean Sheehan celebrated his birthday in style hitting two goals in Ballyheigue’s 3-2 win over Listowel Celtic A. Camp Juniors won away to Ballyhar whose only goal came from Jason Brennan. Inter Kenmare drew at home to Killarney Athletic who had been ahead twice through Caolan Ryan and Tadgh Doolan.

NOVENA TO SAINT MARTHA I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be Amen; and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha.
prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

AGM 2017 The Glenflesk Community Games Committee would like to thank all the children, their parents and mentors who participated in the Community Games in 2016. Once again we had huge interest with girls and boys participating in Art, Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Cycling, Futsal, Gaelic Football, Handwriting, Indoor Soccer, Judo, Music, Projects, Recitation, Singing, Swimming and the Quiz. This highlights not only the range of events available in the Community Games but also the range and depth of talent in Glenflesk. There were many fantastic performances at local, county and national level culminating in silver medals in Judo and Projects at the national finals in August. 2017 marks the golden jubilee of the Community Games and once again we aim to have as many children participating in as many events as possible. However for this to happened we need the support of as many parents as possible to help out as committee members or as mentors. We are holding our AGM on Monday 10th October 2016 at 8.30pm in the kitchen in Glenflesk GAA hall. The range of events covered by the community games can be viewed at communitygames.ie so if you have an interest in any of the events or can get involved in the committee please

MATT LEACY WINS GOLFER OF THE YEAR FOR 2016. Matt Leacy has won the “Golfer of the Year” for 2016, Matt had previously finished second in that championship in 2012 when he won the Club Championship that year, and Matt had previously won the Club Foursomes
when he was partnered by his older brother Kevin. Matt has been a regular member of the Club Junior Cup team for many years, and is the son of our deceased Club stalwart, the evergreen Jim Leacy, and in whose honour we play for the “Jim Leacy Cup” which is a singles competition on an annual basis. Matt has also recorded a Christmas hamper win among his collection of Club competitions over many years. The runner up in the “Golfer of the Year” was Liam Healy, who has been playing great golf in recent months, Liam has put that success down to becoming a member of the Men’s Committee for the first time, this year. John C. Cooper Memorial Competition This competition which is very kindly sponsored by the family of the late John C. Cooper, and for which they have donated a beautiful Cup to the Club in his honour, and was played in benign conditions on the day. The Cup was won by Andrew Garnett with a great score of 41 points, and in 2nd place was John P. Kerry SFC semi-final double bill at Fitzgerald Stadium Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the weekend in sport THE following fixtures were agreed Sunday evening’s CCC meeting where the draw for the Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship was made and sees Dingle play Dr Crokes and Kenmare District play Rathmore. In the quarter-finals of the senior championship last weekend, Dr Crokes defeated Kerins O’Rahillys 1-16 to 0-14; Dingle surprised champions South Kerry by 0-12 to 0-11. Rathmore came with a late rally to defeat Mid Kerry by 1-12 to 0-13 and Kenmare District defeated Austin Stacks by 0-15 to 0-12. The Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship semi-finals take place this Sunday, October 9, in Fitzgerald Stadium, with Dingle taking on Dr Crokes at 2pm, refereed by Sean Joy; Kenmare District will take on Rathmore, at 3.30pm, refereed by Brendan Griffin. Extra time applies in the event of a draw. The final will be played on Sunday, October 16, at a venue to be decided. It will be preceded by Castleisland Mart Junior Premier final, Glenbeigh-Glencar Vs Na Gaeil.
Mikey Geaney, when Pat O Shea works out his match-ups. White was my man-of-the-match on Saturday last. He was very comfortable on the ball fulfilling his basic defence duties but also showing great composure and dash on his up field dashes. After such a run in the dying moments of that game he travelled from inside his own 45-metre line before unleashing a screamer which crashed off the crossbar. It might well have been a spectacular goal. Colm Cooper was a key figure for Crokes in their quarter final scoring 1-3 from play and a further two points from frees, so he will pose a big threat for Dingle corner backs Tom O’Sullivan, or Gavin Curran. Johnny Buckley and Ambrose O’Donovan should prove too strong at midfield for the Dingle O’Sullivans, Barry and Darragh. Crokes have the better forward division especially with Daithí Casey and Kieran O’Leary showing good form. At the other end the Crokes backs cannot afford to foul with Conor Geaney in such great form as ace marksman. Crokes are fancied.
Dr Crokes V Dingle Dingle proved their worth by defeating South Kerry, the reigning champions at Tralee on Saturday last and this will be a big boost to their confidence as they take on Dr Crokes on Sunday next at 2pm. They will look to the Geaneys in particular to pave the way for victory. Paul Geaney, one of the real stars on the Kerry senior team this season will be a trump card on the edge of the square. He kicked three points v South Kerry, two from play and a point from a free, but his contribution was much greater than this. He was fouled on several occasions, which resulted in frees and were converted by Conor Geaney. The latter was Dingle’s top scorer with six points, all from frees. Will Crokes stick with Michael Moloney at full back, or go for the stronger and more experienced Eoin Brosnan to manage Paul Geaney? When O’Rahillys moved big Tommy Walsh in to full forward in the quarter-final at the start of the second half Moloney found it hard to deny the Strand Road man aerial possession. Mikey Geaney will probably be marked by Fionn Fitzgerald his Kerry colleague, while Gavin White will most likely marking Dingle captain
Rathmore v Kenmare District Rathmore had to come from behind to topple Mid Kerry 1-12 to 0-13. The introduction of the towering Shane Ryan at full forward was the key factor in Rathmore’s win. He was a huge presence at full forward and contributed a very valuable 1-2 to copper fasten victory. He has been recovering from injury for the past year, but showed no signs of his inactivity. Kenmare will depend on Tadhg Morley to minimise the influence of the big fellow from Rathmore. Morley marshalled his defence so well versus Stacks and Kieran Donaghy got little change from the Templenoe man. At the other end of the field Kenmare had Paul O’Connor in splendid form shooting two points from play and a further six from placed balls. Rathmore defence is very dependent on county men Paul Murphy and Aidan O’Mahony so Kenmare bainisteoir John Galvin will have noted this. He will be looking to Kerry minor captain Seán O’Shea, Stephen O’Brien, Teddy Doyle and Killian Spillane to kick a winning tally. Midfield will be interesting. Can Rathmore’s Daniel and Donal O’Sullivan gain enough possession from Adrian Spillane and Peter O’Shea to supply Rathmore’s

dangerous forwards? Apart from Shane Ryan, Mark Reen, John Moynihan and Brendan O’Keeffe are proven score getters. It is a hard one to call, but Kenmare District get the nod because of greater balance.
Ryder Cup This was a sweet victory for the USA, after losing to Europe on the last three tournaments. On home soil they proved too strong for Europe to win back this prestigious trophy.

Minor League The Tatler Jack East Region Minor League, Division 2 Final, Currow V Cordal/Scartaglen, is fixed for Sunday 9th October at 12 noon, in Currow. Extra time if necessary. EAST KERRY U16 CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 2 FINAL Dr Crokes 2-14 Fossa 3 -11 Dr Crokes made the early running in this Division 2 final, played in splendid sunshine at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium, and built a lead in the first half with a very well taken goal. A second Dr Crokes goal in the third quarter built a ten point lead for the Lewis road side going into the last quarter. However, Fossa maintained their determination and belief. Three goals in the last fifteen minutes and a scatter of points had the minimum between the sides as the final whistle approached. A superbly kicked free levelled the scores, putting the game to a replay, which promises a scintillating rematch between these two excellent teams. Both teams and mentors must be congratulated on a thrilling game. DIVISION 3 FINAL Gneeveguilla 1-13 Glenflesk 1-08 This MD O’Shea, East Kerry Under 16 Division 3 final, between Gneeveguilla and Glenflesk, played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Thursday evening, was a cracking game with great skills on show. Glenflesk got off to the better start and had 1-3 on the scoreboard, before Gneeveguilla got off the mark. However, Gneeveguilla then had a period of dominance and ended the half leading by the minimum. In a sporting and fast moving second half, Gneeveguilla extended their lead, with a number of unanswered points. Glenflesk played to the final whistle with both sides notching up nice scores, but Glenflesk did not bridge the gap and Gneeveguila ran out winners. Final score: Gneeveguilla 1-13 Glenflesk 1-8. Sean O’ Sullivan, East Kerry Coiste na nÓg Chairman, presented the trophy to Gneeveguilla captain Sean O’Keeffe. Referee Tadhg Ahern (Listry) Under 16 Divisional teams Best of luck to East Kerry in the County Plate Final. Commiserations to Eoghan Ruadh. Fossa GAA
Lotto Numbers drawn 2, 13, 25, 27. Next weeks jackpot will be €10,500. Seniors Our seniors played Scartaglen in Farrenfore on Sunday in the Junior championship semifinal. This was a tough, uncompromising game of football where fitness and character was tested to the limit, as all championship games should be. Scart opened the scoring before Donald O’ Sullivan opened our account on the 5th minute with Tadgh O’ Shea adding another after 10 minutes. Both defences were on top and scores were at a premium, however in the 20th minute Fossa put together a great passing move and an exquisite flick by Paudie Clifford put Fintan Coffey through to rattle the Scart net. Donald O’ Sullivan added the further points to leave the halftime score, Fossa 1-04, Scartaglen 0-03. Scart started the second half very well and reeled off three points without reply, Fossa held their nerve and two excellent points from Matthew Rennie and Tadgh O’ Shea settled them again. In the 15th minute another great team move ended with Tadgh O’ Shea crashing home the ball to the Scart net which allowed Fossa to control the remainder of the half. The defence of Colm Walsh, Kevin McCarthy, Anthony Wharton, Darragh Rice, Mark Dennehy
and Daniel O’ Keeffe were brilliant all through, they coped well with the threat from Scart and gave away no goal chance. Matt Rennie and Fintan Coffey worked tirelessly and gave a great physical presence in the middle of the pitch while the forwards of Mikey O’ Shea, Lorcan Daly, Paudie Clifford, Tadgh O’ Shea, Donald O’ Sullivan and Kenneth Clifford worked seriously hard, were patient and took their chances when they came. This was a great team effort with the bench working well when introduced, they now face Beale in the County final which will be another huge test for this young team, however on the evidence from this game they won’t be found wanting for character, skill or fitness. Final score, Fossa 2-07, Scartaglen 0-07. Senior County Championship Relegation playoff: Kilcummin preserved their senior championship status with a three points victory over our own club-Milltown –Castlemaine in Castleisland on Sunday afternoon. MC was very unfortunate to lose Donal Dennehy to injury in the 14th minute. Donal had just scored MC’s 1st point -when he landed awkwardly on his left elbow-sustaining a fracture. Later in the 2nd half, Paul Carroll had to be replaced after picking up an ankle injury. We wish them both a full and speedy recovery. Well done to the entire panel that fought right to the end and to Mike Hickey, Mike Carroll and Timmy Teahan for their commitment and enthusiasm with this team. Lotto Jackpot Our Jackpot is now at €11,200. Our next draw is this Friday night - October 7th.

U-16 GIRLS It took them a while to get going but when they did the U-16 girls scored a bit more freely than their Spa counterparts and emerged victorious to claim the East Kerry title. Dr Crokes
County Senior Championship Quarter Final Dr Crokes 1-16 Kerins O Rahillys 0-14 We were only once behind in this game and that was in the 3rd minute when Kerins O Rahillys sent over the opening score, a point. By the 15th minute we were ahead by 1-6 to 0-2. Our opponents had the next two points but we outscored them by four points to two in the remaining minutes of the first half. This gave us a 1-10 to 0-6 interval lead. This half was delayed for forty minutes due to an unfortunate injury to Kerins O Rahillys player Giles O Grady. We wish him a speedy recovery from his injury, which necessitated his removal to hospital. Three points by our opponents in the first five minutes of the second half reduced our lead to four points. We had to defend strongly during the second half. We still looked as if we would be winners once we wouldn’t concede a goal. This we achieved and were also helped by a strong bench which yielded points from Eoin Brosnan and Jordan Kiely. This was a very workmanship performance throughout the field but one would have to mention the outstanding displays of Gavin White and Colm Cooper who contributed 1-5. We have now reached the Semi Final but both our players and mentors know that it will take even better performances to win the Bishop Moynihan Cup. Team and Scorers: Shane Murphy 0-2 (0-1 free, 0-1 45), John Payne, Mike Moloney, Fionn Fitzgerald, Gavin White, Alan O’Sullivan 0-1, David O’Leary, Johnny Buckley, Ambrose O’Donovan, Kieran O’Leary 0-1, Gavin O’Shea, Brian Looney, Tony Brosnan 0-2, Daithi Casey 0-3 (0-1 free), Colm Cooper 1-5 (0-2 frees).
