DREAMS
PATIO
Patios, along with decks, are the workhorses of outdoor entertaining. Although many factors affect the success of a patio, the most important consideration is its location. A patio's site affects how much it is used and influences how well it serves the intended purpose. If the patio is for outdoor dining, having it close to the house - and kitchen - increases the likelihood of it being used. A spot that is convenient to the kitchen may have too much or too little sun or an unpleasant view. Wind, sound, and privacy should also be considered. You may be able to screen the unattractive views, add shade, or remove branches to bring sunlight into the area. Consider the view from where you will be sitting. If the view is a problem, an attractive fence or trellis can be a quick solution. The design of a patio should take into account the style of the house and the surrounding garden, and the purpose the patio is to serve. Size matters! A Paul Fitzgerald and Son

large patio is expensive and may not be necessary if you plan only intimate gatherings with family or a few friends. However, if you like large parties, a bigger patio may be a worthwhile investment. As a general rule, a patio is open and exposed; it visually spills into the surrounding areas. To avoid feeling exposed, consider adding a pergola or other overhead structure to give the patio a sense of containment. Add interest to a patio by having it slightly elevated or sunken; don’t forget drainage if part or all your patio is below the surrounding grade. Sometimes paving a narrow side yard or other small area can turn an otherwise unused spot into a functional patio. Don’t forget some space for potted plants to add colour. TOP 7 TIPS
FOR SMALL GARDENS
Generally rules are there to be broken but these 7 will help you get the very best out of your space. 1. Always work on the view from inside the house first. Given our climate, most of the enjoyment of your garden will be from looking out at it, especially if you have a favourite armchair or a washing up spot. 2. G o for bold geometric shapes for the patio and the lawn, and if in doubt stick to straight lines – they are easier to get right. It might seem that curves will bring softness to a garden, especially in a town or city garden, but really, outside spaces soften up very quickly and the best designs contrast the softness of the planting against the cleanness and crispness of the edges. 3. Keep it simple - use a maximum of three types of flooring materials. For example: grass, sandstone and gravel. This will give a coherence and consistency to your garden which will be the envy of all who walk in there. It's possible to get a garden to look good with a wider variety of materials but it's also harder, and why make life harder? 4. T he rule of three also applies to the colours you use – for painting the fences, plants, for accessories and for furniture. Limit that palette and
your garden is going to look so much better. 5. L ighting really matters. Not just for when you're out there, but for that all important view from the house. At four o'clock on a winter's evening your garden needs to look as 'wow' as it does at high noon in summer. Try layering the lighting. Light the steps, sitting areas, paths. Next, light any features you have: water features, small trees, interesting wall surfaces. 6. A lways think about privacy. It's unusual to find a smaller garden that's not overlooked in some way but with a carefully placed shrub or a line of trellis along the top of a fence, it's possible to minimise the problem. Think also about where you put your sitting area; there might be a corner of the garden that's completely private. 7. F or most people, gardens are mainly for sitting in so give plenty of thought to the furniture. Do you want to sit up at a table and make an outside dining room? Or do you want to lounge around on sofas and make your garden into an outdoor sitting room? If you're lucky you may have space for both.
