FEELING

the Blues...

Freshly announced as the Pantone Colour of the Year, 2020 will see the interior-minded increasingly incorporating shades of poised and calming blue into their homes. Yes, our almost perennial love for grey has been edged out as blue becomes the belle of the ball. That’s not to say grey has had its day - it’s incredible versatility in how it pairs with ease with many other colours makes it still a favourite decor choice. And thankfully, classic blue marries well with many other shades in our home, including grey. How to use self-assured blue in the home? Go for a mix of blue hues and greys teamed with accents of warmer pinks and browns. Or incorporate the shade by way of a large piece of furniture such as a sofa to make a standout statement.

STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE...

In 2020, we will also be seeing more homeowners seeking out the soft, romantic feel of furniture with curves - particularly when it comes to upholstery. This mid-century design is all about sofas with curves in all the right places and high back armchairs that envelop you in comfort - while giving an instant glamour

vibe. We love the Skyla curved loveseat in ballet pink for its soft feminine curves and Keavy for its welcoming high-back look.

EVERYTHING’S BETTER IN VELVET ...

One of our favourite trends for the New Year is the continued adoration of velvet. This sumptuously plush fabric has been slipping back into interior favour the last few years - but in 2020 you’re going to be seeing it everywhere. We can’t wait. Nothing beats sinking into a velvet sofa... pure luxe. Consider vibrant blues, pinks, burnt orange, ochre, teals and shades of taupe if you’re on the hunt for a velvet sofa for the new Year. We’re ahead of the curve on velvet’s expected dominance in 2020 with a huge selection of velvet pieces - from sofas and statement chairs to beds and footstools. After all, everything is better in velvet. Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets New Year sale ends this Sunday so make your way in to get this year’s biggest trends at their lowest prices!

‘Breathing new life into old kitchens’ Emer Parkinson, sales consultant with Top Team Painters says this year brings a new vision for 2020 – a customer who would like to get a new look and change their current doors and drawers and replace them with one of our 30 new shapes and designs. Our client is not looking to replace their whole kitchen and would really love to lift the look and bring it into the 21st century without having the huge costs involved in replacing it. They're tired of the dull space and would love our step by step service to walk them through a new project, discussing colour, accessories, counter and tile change and decorating which we do on a personal and friendly one to one basis. We also have our very popular service where you keep your own doors and drawers and we can spray them in any colour. Emer says her favourite story was when they did a reveal of a wooden kitchen sprayed in a beautiful bright colour here in Killarney. "Our lovely client said she wanted to sleep downstairs

all night on the kitchen floor as she was in love with her new space and could not believe in four days the transformation from the orange affect of wood to a bright airy clean space. The doors and drawers come back like new even though her kitchen was 15 years old!" We also offer our full range of services here too. We are happy to help and chat to customers interested in breathing new life into their old kitchens for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. For your free quotation please call Emer on 0858120344 Mon – Fri 9am -5pm.

WHAT'S IN AND WHAT'S OUT

interior trends 2020

44

Every January we look at top trends for the coming year; in searching for this year’s trends one thing has stood out is that anything goes! There are certain trends and styles that come and go but we are looking at more ecological ways of decorating and there are a few sayings that have stuck with me through the years. The first one is by the style icon Coco Chanel; “Fashion fades, only style remains the same”, and the second by William Morris is; “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. So, rock your personal style in your interiors this year. Pick and choose from the trends, the ones you love and that will sit comfortably in your home, you’re the one living there!

OUT: PALE MOMOCHROMATICS So much of the late 2010s was saturated in varying hues of taupe, grey or white with all the furniture, walls, floors and fabrics in the same palette. However, lately we are seeing a demand for warmer toned palettes such as muddy pinks, greens and browns

with rich accent colours.

IN: LAYERING OLD AND NEW We are all over the ‘one-stop-shop’ design and are taking the design of our homes to the next level by getting comfortable with mixing and matching old and new. My favourite thing is to buy locally made souvenirs like pottery or art while on holidays as it makes your home a treasure trove of personal memories.

OUT: PERFECTION People are opting toward living with pieces that are worn, have patina, and don’t mind small scratches on an antique writing desk or linen cupboard. It makes you feel more at ease in your home if nothing is too precious.

45

IN: DARK PAINTED DOORS This is a huge trend for 2020, painting an interior door in a rich colour adds warmth and character to the space. A dark door can provide an artistic element for the room, adding drama in a budget friendly way.

IN: SINGLE PRINT DRAMA What could be simpler, yet incite more drama and style, than a room covered in the same print from floor to ceiling, this trend adds “Drama” with a capital D!

IN: FUN GUEST BATHROOM DESIGN Bathrooms are often the smallest rooms in our homes

and a great place to experiment and have fun with colour, materials, and/or wallpaper. This has been in vogue for a while, but it's everywhere for 2020.

OUT: INDUSTRIAL DESIGN The world is harsh and cold enough these days, so we are looking for spaces that nurture and envelop us. We want to feel cosseted and relaxed in our homes.

IN: EARTH TONES Say goodbye to the cool tones that have ruled for so many years. Shades of chocolate brown, wine, olive green, and yellow ochre are all taking over in homes. Think of sinking into a beautiful olive-green velvet sofa!

OUT: TRADITIONAL DINING TABLE AND CHAIRS These have been replaced by comfortable upholstered chairs that are more conducive to hanging out. Less harsh lighting from table or standing lamps and a warm fire create a cozy space for family and friends.

OUT: OPEN SHELVING Open shelving is out because practical is in. People don’t want to spend all their time dusting or accessorizing and want to keep their kitchens tidy; glass cabinets are a good alternative.

IN: 50 SHADES OF GREEN We are seeing green everywhere! Our need to be closer to nature has inspired this trend. Go green for 2020.

46

OUT: ACCENT WALLS Go big or go home! If you love a colour or pattern enough to cover a whole wall in it, be bold and just do the whole room.

OUT: FAUX PLANTS You can always spot a faux plant in a home. It may look great initially, but satisfaction from owning a plant comes from how it organically grows, and the joy of discovering a new leaf! Faux plants will always remain the same and eventually get dusty.

IN: FURNITURE WITH EUROPEAN-INSPIRED DETAILS Furniture with European-inspired detailing is trending. German and Italian influences can be found in the sloping arms of couches and curved organic styles.

IN: QUALITY BEDDING “To Sleep, Perchance to Dream!” You spend half your life in bed - so why wouldn’t you splurge on your bed, mattress, and a nice set of sheets this year.

OUT: SUBWAY TILE Subway tiles were the go-to for everyone for the last few years. While always a classic, they have been

overseen and overused. It is really time to embrace something new. We are looking for warmer looks for our bathrooms for 2020.

that work hard for us, not a guest once year!

IN: UPHOLSTERED WALLS

As we move into a new decade you will see a return to the classic comfortable styles rather than that hard-modern line. Life is tough enough as it is, does your sofa need to be too?

If you want to make a statement, why not go for an upholstered wall as your headboard. This can be either a half wall of upholstery or it can be the entire wall, giving you that cosseted feel that we want in our homes.

OUT: KARATE CHOPPED CUSHIONS Everyone loves to use cushions, and I am no exception, but the over styled look with a karate chop in the centre has gone the way of the tape deck.

OUT: FORMAL SEPARATION OF SPACES Open plan living is here to stay! Do you really need your formal dining room or that extra guest room that’s used twice a year? As living spaces become more open and fluid, people are realising they have unused spaces in their home. Meanwhile, many homes still have inadequate storage or wardrobe space; so, convert that spare room! We want spaces

IN: CLASSIC INTERIORS

IN: NATURAL LUXURY Think natural materials but with a luxurious spin; marble accessories, cashmere throws, solid wood furniture, high tread count cotton bed sheets.

IN: HANDMADE It’s becoming more important to have a connection with the maker, or a story behind the items in our homes, we want to know who made these things, or why.

IN: TWO TONE KITCHENS With the trend for open plan still alive and well, we want or kitchens to feel less clinical and more inviting. A good way to achieve this is to do two toned, with some storage looking more like free standing furniture rather than built in. Also, less above counter presses so as the space feels more light and airy.

Killarney Credit Union offers a green home improvement loan With the recent announcement of the Government’s new Climate Action Plan, many households in South Kerry will be working to reduce their carbon footprint. Most importantly for homeowners, the new strategy includes plans for the retrofitting of 500,000 homes. This will be hugely beneficial for our local environment in South Kerry, and for the country in general.

ANNOUNCING THE

Pantone Colour of the Year 2020 Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. Introducing Pantone's Colour of the Year 2020, Classic Blue 19-4052 A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-

4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.

However, as with anything that has major long-term human and societal benefits, making our homes ‘greener’ will come with a significant cost. The good news is that Killarney Credit Union stands ready to provide loans for those looking to retrofit their homes in the coming months. Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer says Killarney Credit Union has a ‘green’ home loan for those wanting to retrofit their homes, but who might need some financial assistance to do so. “The new loan is as affordable as it is flexible. To mark the recent announcement of Ireland’s new climate plan, the loan is currently being offered at a competitive APR of 8.3% *. The loan is typically approved within 48 hours and does not have any hidden fees or costs. Killarney Credit Union is happy to work with borrowers to structure the repayments in a way that suits their financial circumstances best. The product is designed to take the toxic stress out of home improvements, so you can focus on the greener aspects of your upgrade.” In addition, Killarney Credit Union can also help with a loan to assist those homeowners using SEAI home energy improvement grants to retrofit their homes. The Sustainability Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) grant aims to increase the Building Energy Rating (BER) for homes. The grant ranges from

€300 for attic insulation, to €700 for upgrades to heating controls and to €6,000 for external wall insulation. The added benefit for homeowners is their return on investment; saving money on their heating bills once the work is completed. The SEAI Grants typically cover onethird of the total cost of the works for an average home. Homeowners can apply to Killarney Credit Union for a loan should they need assistance with the remaining balance of the energy upgrade. Helen added “We are delighted to partner with a number of local retailers to assist with this loan, so whether it's new windows/doors or a major overall, we are there to support local businesses through our new CU Easy Pay Scheme." For further information on the new, green home loan, contact Killarney Credit Union at 064-6631344 or email loans@killarneycu.ie or pop in for a chat in any of our local branches in Killarney, Kenmare or Cahersiveen.
