WELCOME Welcome to July’s Home & Living. The weather has been a bit of a mixed bag, but overall not a complete washout, and with some sunshine forecasted for the weekend hopefully we can all get out and about without the threat of rain. With the kids off for summer, you may be fighting the clutter, so this month we are looking at how you can integrate a mudroom into your home. You don't need a large room or a plethora of hand-built cabinets to reap the benefits of a mudroom, all you need is a bench and some coat hooks or a freestanding press. If you’re lucky enough to have a separate mud/boot room, take a look at the amazing makeover, taking a boot room to the dark side, which shows just how much drama you can add to a room with paint! If you’re redecorating your hallway, we've looked at how to give this sometimes-small overworked space a sense of style, and this month’s Notebook has the perfect pieces for your hallway or mudroom. Next month we are looking at furniture in master bedrooms and guest rooms.

Have some fun with your hallway The hallway is a bit of a tricky one. Some might think it’s unimportant because people pass through it all the time, but it is like a business card for your home. It expresses your personality the instant people arrive, so have some fun with it! Rock a coloured front door. If you have a small space you don’t have much opportunity for impact, so work what you’ve got. My front door is pink, and it makes me happy every time I go through it. Your hallway is the ideal spot to add impact with flooring. You may not have the space to make an impact with furniture, so lay patterned tiles, paint the floor, polish the wood, or simply place a colourful rug or runner. I love hallways that are cosy and inviting, they make you feel comfortable straight away and then you can’t wait to see the rest of the house. Patterned or printed wallpaper, or paint in rich tones can achieve this. The colour helps define the space and make it feel like a room. Mirrors are an interior designers’ best friend because they reflect light, cleverly creating the illusion of space. They’re also gorgeous and come in a range of designs
to suit your style. Consider using a mirror instead of art if you have a small space. Make a statement with lighting. Again you may not have space for a statement piece of furniture but you can show your style with lighting and it doesn't have to be specifically a hallway lantern. Think outside the box, like this pink tassel chandelier!

DECLUTTER YOUR HOME
Mudroom by adding a
Mudroom, or boot room as they are known on this side of the Atlantic, was traditionally a room in larger country homes dedicated to clutter of outside living, from welly boots to raincoats to the lovely wet pooch. You can turn any space into a mudroom in your home. It can be any area that makes a great transition space between the outdoors and the indoors, and with the clever use of storage, you can create a well-organised “mudroom” providing a space to sit as well as storage for shoes, jackets and bags, instead of tracking dirt, dripping water or dropping sports gear in the house. It can be key for keeping your home organised, and help the rest of the house look decluttered and clean. If you're desiring a stylish and efficient space like this - take a look at our top tips to turn any space into a mudroom. Don’t have a separate entryway large enough for a mudroom space? No problem. Mudroom spaces like this gorgeous DIY mudroom bench are beautiful enough to grace your family room, living room, or even dining room… wherever you have the space. And the bench can act as additional seating in the room!
USE BASKETS TO HIDE CLUTTER If your mudroom space is in a main living area (or even visible from them), you want to be sure to have baskets to corral the shoes and other random items.
HANG ARTWORK TO DECORATE A MUDROOM On that same theme, your mudroom doesn’t have to be tucked away from the rest of the house if it’s beautiful! Add some art work so you can enjoy the space no matter where it is.
ADD A MUDROOM IN YOUR LAUNDRY ROOM It doesn’t have to be huge. A corner of the laundry or utility room can be just as functional for storing bags and shoes. One of the best rules to an organised home is to make sure everything has its place, and the laundry room is a fine place for those things to live!
BLEND IT WITH YOUR KITCHEN Using kitchen cabinetry is not only a logical way to design and build a mudroom space, but it can give your home a seam-
less feel. Design a mudroom bench right into a wall of kitchen cabintry and use it in the heart of your home!
TURN A CLOSET INTO A MINI MUDROOM Still lacking a functional spot after all those ideas above? Try a little closet. It only takes some hooks and baskets to organise things and any spot can become a mini mudroom. Some of these DIY mudrooms could be done by simply taking the doors off a closet and adding a builtin bench. So many possibilities!
TURN A HALLWAY INTO A MUDROOM SPACE Don’t have a room off your entryway to designate as a mudroom? Try a hallway which can often be unused spaces. All it takes is a few cabinets or a little hall tree with hooks and baskets to transform the space.
EVERYDAY DISPLAY Turn your everyday items into a display; bright coloured or designer wellingtons are out there in droves. Place them on a tray or wellington boot holder rather than hiding them away. They look great and are easily accessible for that country walk, a spot of gardening or a festival!
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK Traditionally boot rooms were dark or muted colours to cope with all that dirt. These colours work well in an entryway. As any architect will tell you, entering through a darker more enclosed space into a bright open plan area gives you twice the impact. Less is more Your mudroom area doesn't have to be a hugely expensive large built-in room - a bench and some hooks, and you can achieve this look on a budget!
BEFORE
Going to the
DARK SIDE
Don’t be afraid of the dark! Having lived with some dark heritage colours for a long time when we redecorated our home, I wanted bright white everywhere! However, after a while I craved some drama, and after seeing a kitchen painted in Farrow and Ball Downpipe, I took the plunge and painted our boot room.
It’s quite dark and some people will prefer the before, but it is so much warmer and cozier, and it definitely added drama. Also, the contrast of walking from a dark cozy entrance into the bright open space is amazing. It also makes all accessories that you add to the space pop. The press and paneling are painted in Downpipe from Farrow and Ball. Above the paneling is White Tea from Colourtrend Paints. The next project is painting the bench, which is going to be Sulking Room Pink from Farrow and Ball’s new colours. I can’t resist a spot of pink!
AFTER
HALLWAYS
are perfect for 'VISUAL DRAMA' The problem with most hallways is that they are dark due to the lack of natural light. The best thing to do is to work against it with the light that you have got. This is exactly what was done when completing this interior design project. The striped carpet was put downstairs/ landing to soften the noise levels. The wallpaper adds depth by working with the style of the staircase and blends in with mauve painted walls. Double doors from the living room were installed as front doors and painted the same as the stairs in order to create unity throughout the building.
An antique mahogany wall stand has being dressed with a collection of hats which belonged to various family members over the years. This adds individuality to the overall interior design scheme, but is also a functional piece of furniture. The light bouncing off the Waterford Crystal vase helps to create a welcoming and pleasant ambience that lifts the mood. Work with what you have got by adding an element of visual drama.
