WELCOME Welcome to the June edition of Home and Living. It doesn't feel much like summer as the weather has been so crazy, and with most schools finishing up for summer holidays this week, we need some things to do to distract us from the rain which is out to ruin our fun. If you've been thinking about a bedroom revamp for your children's bedrooms, or are expecting a new bundle of joy, we are looking at teen rooms and nurseries this month. The boho vibe, which is trending on Instagram, can definitely be seen sneaking into our budding teenager’s rooms for the last while which is great as this is a very simple style to emulate. Some simple furniture, a Beni Ourain rug, a hanging chair, some plants, and you’re almost there! There may be some good news out there for those of you entertaining children for the summer, or just want to do some gardening or replace the patio – the sun is predicted to make an appearance! A rare 7ft shark was caught and released off the coast of west Cork last weekend - the third shark of the season, which according to the charter company is a sign of good weather to come! We’ll take all the good signs we can get!

Your teenager's bedroom may be amongst the hardest rooms in the house to design.

BEDROOM

IDEAS

It needs to spotlight their personal style and interests while still fitting in with the rest of the house. You want to make sure it grows with them through the teenage years, and you want to avoid any nuclear meltdowns when they demand something like black walls. The best way to avoid this is to let them have their say. It may be hard to release control a little especially if you are interiors obsessed like me but think of it as handing over your flair for design to your children! Set up a Pinterest page and pin some pictures that you like, then get them to do the same. Explain that this is a discussion and they may not get everything they want. We are in the process of this in our house, and I find that explaining how much things will cost and how long they will have to live with their decision works well with things like black walls. Dark colours are such a big thing now so navy or dark grey could be a great compromise. Have a look through our top tips for a teenager’s room together and you may just find that compromise!

YOU AND YOUR KIDS WILL BOTH LOVE

1. SAY YES TO SMART STORAGE This bedroom is the perfect example of how to decorate a space that can grow with a person. It has smart storage solutions with playful yet grown-up décor on display. If you’re decorating for your pre-teen your child may not want to throw away all the trappings of childhood yet, but may not want to display that coveted bear/car/doll collection, so storage is the way to go. This can be used later to store all those clothes when they truly get into the teen years. A hanging rail is also a great option if you have the space as they can display their favourite outfits and it stops the dreaded clothes living on the floor or chair.

2. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER If your teens share one large room and if you have the space, consider two small double beds instead of two twin-sized beds. The upgrade will make sharing a room feel a lot more mature and comfortable. Incorporate boho elements with a patterned rug, bright sheets and pillows, and rattan ottomans. Abstract photography is a chic, modern touch.

3. HAVE FUN WITH DÉCOR When decorating a kid's room, always invest in classic staples and then have a little more fun with the artwork and accessories. These are a lot easier to swap in and out and can introduce just as much personality. A printed upholstered headboard and fun throw pillows bring in a sense of youth. Go find a large poster of their favourite band or sport event and frame them for a more refined feel that still puts them in the spotlight. A great way to work those prints for their wall is a picture shelf giving them the chance to swap pictures later on as they change their trends without leaving you with nail holes everywhere.

4. GIVE THEM PRIVACY If their bedroom is big enough, carve out a little seating area in the corner so they have somewhere private to relax and hang out. If you have the room, add a small sofa or seat for them to read or entertain their friends in their own space.

5. PUT THEIR HOBBIES ON DISPLAY They may have grown out of Lego or model toys, but may not want to part with them yet, so putting a few of the nicer ones in a glass cabinet makes more of a collector’s display and can look really funky without the dusting!

6. GIVE IN If you can persuade them away from black. Here's proof that you can be bold and dark while still maintaining a clean, sophisticated aesthetic.

7. GO ALL OUT If your teen has a favorite colour and knows exactly what they want their room to look like, why not go all out? Make it feel like something they'll still want to sleep in when they're older by opting for good quality bedding and timeless lighting fixtures. Layering different textures also brings in some warmth. We're big fans of the gallery wall of mirrors above the bed for added dimension and light.

8. KEEP IT CLEAN AND SIMPLE Not all teenagers love bright colors, posters, and patterns. If your teen prefers neutral color palettes, bring in more dimension with a fluffy carpet, luxe bedding, and an interesting bed frame. If they want to add in more color or décor later, that's always an option - it's best to start with a solid base they can build upon.

9. BOOST PRODUCTIVITY WITH A WORK SPACE A personal work space will make them feel so much more independent (and hopefully boost productivity).

10. HANGING AROUND A hanging chair is always a hit if you have the space, and they are the height of fashion at the moment. They can often be more reasonable than buying a fully upholstered bedroom chair and add big bang for your buck for a fun element. They will be the envy of all their mates and it’s a chair that might get used for something more than just a clothes hanger!

Things you need to know

before decorating your nursery 1. Make sure everything you could possibly need is within easy reach of the changing table. Baby won’t lie there while you go and get the babygrow from the hotpress. Have a changing table or chest of drawers with a changing mat at hand, and put EVERYTHING in there from wipes, babygrow vests etc. 2. A void clutter. You will be carrying a very precious bundle and you don't want to trip over that lovely decorative basket in the middle of the night. 3. T wo words: washable paint. Not to put you off - but babies are messy! 4. D on't be afraid of the dark. Backout blinds are a must, great for when baby is taking a nap in the middle of the day or if you live in a lit-up area. 5. Pick a theme. Choose one accessory or picture and build around that, it makes for a cohesive room. 6. A rt makes a difference. It doesn't have to be specifically for a baby room ei-

ther, it can be a colourful poster or print you love or an original piece that you've bought or made yourself. They can take it with them to their own home and this will happen a lot sooner than you think! 7. B aby furniture. It does not have to be specifically made for a baby. For example, you can buy a chest of drawers and put a changing mat on top instead of buying a changing table. 8. I f you have room, put a bed in there. When you do decide to put baby in the nursery you will be spending a lot of time there. If you don't have room for a bed and a cot together, make sure the chair you choose is comfortable. And remember, babies don't care what the nursery looks like. This is mainly for you and it won’t be long until your little tiny baby will be telling you what they like and want in their room. So enjoy yourself when decorating the nursery - you have free rein!

Nursery with a playful character The aim was to create a welcoming, playful and child friendly nursery that would stand the test of time. The mustard walls wake up the decor in the room and form a pleasant, warm and joyful atmosphere. The rich yellow green wall colour connects with the outside, works with the light in the room

and helps to keep the space appear warm to the eye. The navy is the perfect accent to go with the mustard. The natural wood flooring and linen-look curtains bring a feeling of calm and help to keep the overall interior scheme that is balanced and restful. This all helps to bring a sense of individuality to the nursery. Interior Design by KADRI BORMEISTER
