Welcome

T

o this month’s Home & Living. We were all excited at the prospect of featuring children’s rooms in this edition. We hope to inspire you in decorating or updating rooms for you little (or big) prince or princess! My favourite from this month is the little red and flower chair from Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets. It’s a fun way to add colour and comes at a great price, at €99. Having two boys, though, I’m drawn to the Shell bedside cabinet with tin. Also from Corcoran’s Furniture, it would work right up to the teenage years. My boys have picked the eight-ball footstool, €60, from Mylestone Interiors, which is great for gaming and neater than a chair if space is tight. Have fun decorating this summer and don’t forget a trip to Tiger for all those colourful accessories!

Yours in decorating,

Noelle

Something for the little ones DECORATING a baby’s room is great fun, but babies grow into toddlers in a flash, so why spend money on something you’ll have to change in a few years? But that’s not the case if you can choose carefully, as this way you can ensure the room will grow with them. You also need to think of your own comfort – as a parent you will spend a lot of time in there with your bundle of fun. First of all, choose a neutral colour. Take a look at the wonderful greys and pinks our expert paint advisers have chosen for the walls. You don’t need to fill the room. A cot is a necessity but why not get a chest of drawers instead of a changing table. Just pop a change mat on top and voila. And it saves you from having to buy a chest of drawers in the future. You can steal a chair form another room or splash out but remember it has to be comfortable for those nights the baby is wide awake at three in the morning and can’t understand why you’re not. For the fabric use classic and timeless patterns. A gingham check or denim blue stripe will see your baby’s room through to the toddler stages and maybe even into pre-teens. Have fun and use your imagination – the baby won’t mind!

Pretty in pink A GIRL’S bedroom is her sanctuary from the outside world as she grows up. But how do you future-proof it so she is not stuck in a time warp and so her room’s décor will grow with her, from Barbie to makeup! The best way to do this is to stay away from heavily themed rooms. Also, keep it simple. Choose a pretty shade of pale pink or grey as a base. Select solid furniture for the bedroom and simply add some fun, cheap accessories which can be changed as her taste changes. The bedroom opposite features a sophisticated grey with pale pink accessories and is sure to keep any little girl dreaming sweet dreams.

Decorating a boy’s bedroom DESIGNING a room for your little boy isn’t as hard as it seems. Future-proofing it could be a bit of a challenge but is also a lot of fun. As with a little girl’s room, keep it simple. For instance, when choosing your wall colour think in terms of a grey or blue background with a large poster or print. You can also feature colour from in the accent throws or pillows. It’s worth splashing out on good quality furniture with clean lines and just changing prints and accessories. As the room’s owner grows, the focus will turn to removing toy storage to make room for a desk for study. It won’t be long before you find them switching their attention from Thomas the Tank Engine to Grand Theft Auto! Orange accessories with a grey background is hugely on trend right now and sure to please your little boy of any age.
