WELCOME Welcome to September’s Home and Living. It’s been an unusual month with the return back to school, and with nearly a month down for most students some of the trepidation we felt sending them back is easing slightly, and we are getting into our new normality. We are looking at everything Hygge this month, and how the Danes cope with their long dark winters. Hygge is a word that can’t be directly translated, but it is a lot to do with living in the moment and enjoying the small pleasures, from lighting your favourite candle to making your favourite dinner, or just watching a movie curled up in blankets with your family. I think we all need a bit of Hygge to get us through this winter. Next month we are going to look at Christmas gifts for all the family. Santa has told us here in the Killarney Advertiser that the elves have been busy all year and he will still be delivering his gifts on schedule this year, and Mrs Claus has been making him some lovely new masks.

hygge 30

/ˈh(j)uːɡə,ˈhʊɡə/ noun a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).

31 Hygge, which is actually a word of Norwegian origin, is pronounced “hoo-gah” and loosely translates to “coziness”. But while coziness is a major piece of the puzzle, Hygge is really more of an attitude or mindset. As Natalie Van Deusen, professor of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Alberta, puts it:

“The best translation is coziness, but not the physical coziness that you get when you put on a sweater or cuddle up with a blanket. It’s more of a state of mental balance and psychological well-being. And, believe me, the Danish know what they’re talking about. Despite their dismal winters, with as many as 17 hours of darkness per day, the Danes remain among the happiest people on the planet. You don't plan it, you don't create it, it's not something that can be manufactured or sold, it's a state of being, the

pursuit of everyday happiness. It’s using the winter months to focus on the simple pleasures in life, strive for relaxation and comfort, and pursue togetherness on a daily basis. When you look at winter through a lens like that, it feels a whole lot warmer. How can we learn from the Danes? As Irish people we talk about the weather a lot but never seem to be happy with it! Well, a positive attitude towards winter is a must - we can’t change it, but we can work with it. Get your home comfortable and cozy with lots of candles and lamps, wash all your throws and buy a basket for them so they are accessible, get some new mugs and stock up in hot chocolate, some good books, a kindle, or line up some boxsets, Netflix series you've wanted to watch or a list of movies new or old that tickle your fancy. Try some new board games or a deck of cards, invest in some cozy lounge wear or PJs and those all-important slippers, and get comfortable. Put together a reading corner with a lamp and side table, have everything ready to go and enjoy this relaxing time. If you are more into braving the elements and walking or hiking your way through winter invest in the gear; waterproof runners or boots and a proper rain jacket are a must for comfortable winter walks.

Cozy Up FOR WINTER

It’s time to think about those cozy long winter nights in, and what could be cozier than a stove to warm your toes while you’re Netflix and chilling or curled up with a good book and cup of hot choc-

olate – it’s Hygge at its best. Along with less dusting (always a plus for me!) a stove can be up to three to four times more efficient than an open fire. It’s also a great investment for a sunroom as it

can mean using this room all year round, and with gas stoves that can be vented through a wall without requiring a traditional chimney or bio ethanol fires, there are so many options to choose from.
