Welcome

W

ITH a hurricane and a storm in one week we are still reeling, with some parts of the country only getting their power back this weekend. We escaped lightly; I lost one of my favourite trees but no one was hurt and we had power all the way through so I’ll count my blessings. Our thoughts go out to all those who were affected by Hurricane Ophelia. We are looking at living rooms this month, how to choose a sofa and curtains; there are so many choices now it can be a bit of a scary experience. Also we spoke to Ildanach Studio about adding “a touch of glass” to your living room or entrance. With such a huge trend for homemade bespoke pieces, these stained glass windows tick all the boxes. We all love our front cover picture this month; these beautiful curtains are available from Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets, our other top picks are the beautiful corner unit from Hal-Lou Furnishings and my favourite – the Fama Astoria range available from Moriarty’s of Killorglin and Killarney Furniture and Carpets. Hopefully our weather was not a sign of what’s to come, even if it is, we hope you will be cuddling up on the perfect sofa, cozy and warm.

Take a Seat WHETHER you are looking for a place to sit and chat or a cosy spot to plop down and read a book, sofas are a staple in any lounge area. But with endless options at our fingertips, finding the perfect sofa can be overwhelming to say the least. Consider the following main points before choosing a sofa and your shopping experience will go from intimidating to exciting.

COLOUR The colour you choose for your sofa is very important and can make or break your room. It can either match the rest of the dĂŠcor in its general lines or it can coordinate with certain key elements. It can also be the one piece that stands out without having to match anything. Once you decide if your sofa will be an accent or neutral colour, you'll need to decide if your sofa will be light or dark. Your floor colour has a big effect on choosing the right sofa colour. If you're considering a potential sofa sitting on your floor, will it float on a sea of dark wood floor or carpet or will it blend into it? Because a sofa is traditionally large and upholstered, and most fabric absorbs light, it can darken a room considerably. A trick I use when considering a new sofa colour is to find a sheet or blanket in a similar colour and drape it over the existing sofa. This gives you an idea of how the colour will look, and if the sofa will be too dark or too light for the room. Don't forget accent pillows and throws as the finishing touches when coordinating your new sofa with your room decor. These little pops of colour give your living room that pulled-together look.

SIZE Consider how large your room is, the height of the ceiling, and which other furnishings you want to incorporate in the room. Make sure the sofa’s length, depth, and height are in proportion to your room. Making up a template in cardboard or newspaper and putting it on the floor gives you a great idea of what space your sofa will take up and if there is enough space for ease of movement in the room, and for your other furniture.

TYPE The size and function of your room will dictate the type of sofa that best fits your space. Is this a small, formal area for conversation? Opt for a loveseat, settee, or sofa with more petite dimensions. Is this a large room where you gather to relax or watch a movie? Choose a deep sofa or corner sofa where you can tuck up your feet and snuggle in for the night.

UPHOLSTERY Select a fabric that is in line with the function of the space. Determine if it is a high-use area. In a formal living room or master bedroom you can get away with a light cotton or linen upholstery, but in a high-use area with kids and pets, stick to a textile that is easy to clean. Removable covers are an option, or choose leather.

Window of Opportunity How to Pick the Perfect Curtains

COLOUR & FABRIC Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time. If they're too heavy, they may not fold crisply when drawn; too light and they may not fall well. Try holding fabrics up to a window, even in a fabric showroom. Pleat it like an accordion at the top and let it drape, if it starts to flare like a piece of crinoline, then it's not going to fall nicely on the window." Try and work with a big sample, at least two yards, since a smaller piece may not show the fabric's true drape. It may be worth buying a yard as if it’s a large area mistakes can be costly. Sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room gets a lot of light, it's smart to avoid bright colours, since they tend to fade faster, if you like to change your rooms often, you can be less concerned with fading. Neutral colours, are less likely to fade and more likely to blend into a room's decor. Linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet are best choices to use for window treatments since they tend to hang the best, Faux silk tends to be the most durable, and in a particularly sunny room, faux silk doesn't deteriorate as quickly as real silk. Some fabrics can help keep out the cold. Many hotels use suede, velvet, tapestry, or tweed since their weight helps block light and keep heat in. Still, nearly any fabric can be interlined—a piece of fabric slipped between the lining and the face fabric—can help prolong the life of the curtains. If silk is unlined, it will rot, lining and interlining are what give curtains their body and fullness.

LENGTH & WIDTH Before you take out the tape ve measure, decide how high abo ins the window you'd like the curta to begin. Keep in mind: Hanging will panels higher than the window room. give a sense of height to the Designers often hang curtains about six inches above the winlook, dow frame, but for a dramatic some go higher. For a more traditional look, with the the curtain slightly puddled on or floor, you'll want to add two a three inches to your length. For panel modern, crisp look, have the fall flush with the floor. your When measuring the width of to window, be sure to add four eight inches on both sides and re double the total number to ensu dealso will This ess. fulln curtain using. pend on what pleat you are
