KERRY’S highways and byways are set for some serious TLC tomorrow as the fifth annual County Clean-Up Day takes place. Businesses, community groups and individuals will be sweeping into action for the event, which is held in association with KWD Recycling. As ever KWD Recycling will supply and collect all bags free of charge after the event at a predesignated collection point so there really is excuse not to get involved and give your local roadway

Please show your support and log onto www. countycleanup.com where you can register your group and order a free “Clean Up Day Pack” which includes reflective vests, red branded refuse sacks, event posters and information on how to organise your group. TEEING up for a unique charity golf event, Killarney Lions Club has joined forces with SouthWest Counselling Centre. The Killarney Lions Club hosts the fundraiser every year at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, and this year’s event, in aid of SouthWest Counselling Centre, will take place on Wednesday, April 13. “What makes this event stand out from others, is that although it’s organised by the Lions, it could not be held without its sponsors and benefactors,” said Killarney Lions Club President Con Stack. “To get an 18-hole golf course for the day is difficult, getting one at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is another matter entirely.” And to make the day even more special, the refreshments (breakfast or lunch, depending on the time slot) are sponsored by the five-star Aghadoe Heights Hotel, with Jason Higgins, operations manager at the Aghadoe Heights personally, overseeing the day’s proceedings. The fourball event also offers some superb prizes, sponsored by Tricel (Killarney). “The Lions Club is 100% voluntary, with no salary nor expense paid to members. Outside of the events' running costs, what we collect in the Lions Club goes locally to charities and organisations that need our help,” said Con. "This year we are supporting the Southwest Counselling Centre in Lewis Road, Killarney. Southwest Counselling (telephone 064-663 6416), has been providing counselling in Kerry since 1994.” There are still some places left to take part so if you would like to enter a team, contact John O’Callaghan on 086-3844834.

EDITOR’S VIEW A MIXTURE of pride, dignity, solemnity and good cheer marked the 1916 commemorations as they unfolded in Dublin and parts of Kerry over the past weekend. The overall tone of events, including the four hours of celebrations in the capital, was as impressive as it was inclusive as the courage of men and women of Easter Week 1916 was remembered. Kerry was a key part of plans for 1916 and has unveiled a whole series of events to come. See our coverage on pages 18 and 20. Meanwhile, pride in our county will be in force tomorrow as Kerry celebrates annual county clean-up day in association with KWD Recycling. The Kerry Hospice Foundation thanked all who supported its annual Good Friday walks at the weekend, including walks in Muckross, in memory of Vivien O’Shea, and in Kilcummin; see page 14. Easter was an occasion of pageantry for all. See our coverage of the Easter ceremonies on page 10 and community celebrations, pages 28-29. Last but not least, the very best of luck this Saturday to St Brendan’s College in the Hogan Cup final. EVE KELLIHER, EDITOR •Have you got a story or an opinion you would like to share? Easter Ceremonies In Killarney THE Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne and Killarney parish administrator Fr Kieran O'Brien led the Holy Week and Easter celebrations in St Mary’s Cathedral. They commenced on Holy Thursday night when Bishop Browne and Fr Kieran led a procession to the cathedral where a celebration of the Last Supper, the Gift of the Eucharist took place.

Question My father has had a stroke and is critically ill. The doctors say that he has very little time left. Am I entitled to leave from work to be with him? Answer If you have a family crisis, the Parental Leave Acts 1998 and 2006 give an employee a limited right to leave from work. This is known as force majeure leave. You can take force majeure leave where, for urgent family reasons, your immediate presence is necessary because a close family member is ill or has been injured. The definition of a close family member includes a child or adopted child, a spouse or partner and a parent or grandparent. The maximum amount of leave is three days in any 12-month period or five days in a 36-month period. You are entitled to be paid while you are on force majeure leave. Your employer may grant you further leave. However force majeure leave does not give any entitlement to leave following the death of a close family member. If your father dies following his illness, you don’t have a statutory right to leave after his death. You may be entitled to compassionate leave under your contract of employment or custom and practice in your workplace. Alternatively, you may be given some bereavement leave at your employer’s discretion. Further information about force majeure leave is available from the Workplace Relations Commission's Information and Customer Service Lo-call: 1890 80 80 90 or from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Happy 90Th Birthday, Donie!

Donie Sheahan and Colm Cooper.

Killarney House & Gardens in the picture THE finishing touches were put to a mural at the Golden Gates yesterday as the town got set for the eagerly anticipated preview of Killarney House & Gardens this Sunday, April 3. This special preview opening will afford locals the earliest opportunity to see first hand the on-going restoration and re-creation of the gardens, which has been funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland. The inside of house itself will open a little later in the year but even at this early stage it is easy to see the huge potential of this development. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, in association with Kerry County Council, cooperating with local management of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, are marking the event from 2pm-4pm with music, pageantry, activities and fun for all the family.

THIS month sees popular Killarney pharmacist Donie Sheahan, MPSI, celebrate a landmark birthday. Donie, who turns 90 on April 21, shares a birthday with Queen Elizabeth, who will be 90 on the same day. A native of Listowel, Donie opened up his familyrun pharmacy business with his late wife Carmel at 34 Main Street in 1953. Donie must have prescribed medicines to at least six generations of Killarney people. “Donie was always available 24/7 to look after people’s healthcare needs, a South Doc before his time,” said his friend Donal Whitty O’Sullivan. His passion for Gaelic football and horse-racing is well known. Dr Crokes GAA Club, of which he is patron, is very close to Donie’s heart. Donie is also a former Crokes player and won a county championship in 1951. He has served as trainer, officer, and selector with the Crokes as well as serving as a selector for Kerry football teams in all grades. One of his proudest moments came in 1975, when Kerry won the All-Ireland Senior Football Final. Donie also trained East Kerry in 1971 to win the AllIreland Club Football Championship and was also a member of the East Kerry and Kerry County Boards and Fitzgerald Stadium committees. As a horse owner, Donie has had a lot of success down the years, and his interest in and knowledge of horses and the sport of horse racing is greatly respected. Enjoy your 90th birthday, Donie, with your family, Liam, Kieran, Paul, Kathryn, Aileen, grandchildren and many friends.

Putting Their Best Foot Forward For Kerry Hospice GOOD FRIDAY has become synonymous in Kerry with stepping it out in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. In Muckross, a Good Friday walk unfolded in memory of Killarney woman Vivien O’Shea. Walkers began at the Garden Restaurant, Muckross House, and two walks were on offer. The 8km walk wound its way from Muckross House via Dinis, taking in a section of the Torc Trail, and returned to Muckross House. Some availed of the shorter route offered, to Bricin Bridge, which covered around 6km. A Good Friday Hospice walk took place in Kilcummin on March 25 also. “The organisers say a sincere ‘thank you’ to all those who helped and took part in the walk,” said a spokesperson. This year’s collection will be donated to the Palliative Care Unit. This year all those registered were entered into a draw. There was a choice of two walks, 5km and 10km. Refreshments were served in the hall after the walk. Participants also availed of the opportunity to place names of loved ones who died of cancer in a special memory book.

Richard Behal Calls For Amnesty For Political Prisoners KILLARNEY’S Richard Behal read the Proclamation of Independence at Arbour Hill Cemetery on Easter Monday as part of the parade from the Garden of Remembrance to the GPO to Arbour Hill. Earlier in the month, Mr Behal, a former IRA prisoner who escaped from Limerick Prison 50 years ago, had called for an amnesty for all political prisoners to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Richard Behal (78), a Sinn Féin candidate in the 1984 European elections who describes himself as an “independent republican”, made the suggestion in Limerick where he

marked the jubilee anniversary of his prison break. He walked to Limerick Prison from Pery’s Hotel with Walter O’Dunphy (75), who was jailed along with him and the late Edward Kelly in connection with an attack on a British naval ship in Waterford in 1965. The three men were given ninemonth jail sentences following the attack. They were in prison awaiting a retrial when Mr Behal made a daring escape after using tiny hack saw blades to cut through the iron bars of his cell window. Some of the men who helped plan

the prison break in February 1966, including Marcus Fogarty from Cashel in Co Tipperary, were among those who joined Mr Behal outside

Limerick Prison to mark the 50th anniversary of his escape. On the night of the escape the then 27-year-old Mr Behal used bed sheets and ropes which were thrown over the wall to scale the prison’s perimeter after rubbing his body in butter to squeeze through a space measuring 9 by 18.5 inches. Having the reunion on the centenary of the 1916 Rising was “fitting” according to Mr Behal. Asked if amnesty should be given to all political prisoners including those who have taken lives, he said you could not have “a struggle for freedom where lives are not lost”.

Help Reel In Cash For A Good Cause CALLING all anglers – here’s your chance to enjoy a memorable day out and also reel in some cash for a deserving local charity. The 29th annual charity Lough Lein Anglers Fly Fishing Competition has been launched on the shores of Lough Lein, Killarney, and will be held on Sunday, April 17. This year’s chosen beneficiary is the Killarney/South Kerry Branch of the Irish Cancer Society. “The society provides vital support and back-up services to patients and families affected by cancer,” said organiser Timo O’Sullivan. The competition is held in association with sponsor Lee Strand and to date the annual charity fly-fishing event has raised in excess of €200,000 for local charities. At the Launch the 29th Annual Charity Lough Lein Anglers Fly Fishing Competition which will be held on April 17 were Eleanor O'Doherty, Killarney/South Kerry Branch Irish Cancer Society, Timo O'Sullivan, organiser, Jerry Dwyer, manager, milk operation, Lee Strand, sponsor, Corry O'Flaherty and Rory O'Flaherty, Lough Lein Anglers Association. Restaurant Fundraiser Serves Up Cash For Charity A UNIQUE beef tasting event in Killarney restaurant Gaby’s proved to be the recipe for successful fundraising for a good cause. The team at Gaby’s, led by owner and head chef Geert Maes, cooked up a storm for the Battle of the Breeds night in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House, in the process raising some €6,280 for the centre. “Our guests ranged from local business people, the farming community, national print and TV media and friends from the wider community,” said spokeswoman Mai De Barra. Guests sampled six “mystery” steaks as part of their dinner menu and voted for their favourite. The cheque was handed over to the charity at Glen South Farm, Co Cork, this week. Glen South Farm, which is Europe’s first robotic beef farm, is co-owned by Frank Murphy of Monex Financial Services in Killarney and his wife Dr Teresa McSweeney. This was the second such event, the first of which took place at Beeftro Res-

taurant, Dublin, in 2015 and was featured in a recent episode of the Rare Breed series on UTV. The evening showcased great Irish produce sponsored by Spillane Seafoods and master butcher Jack McCarthy with beers supplied by the Killarney Brewing Company. Sponsors also included Killarney hotelier Joe Scally, John Collins, Beeftro Dublin, and venue hosts Geert and Marie Maes. “Gaby’s kitchen and front of house team deserve a special thanks for kindly offering their services free of charge to support the fundraiser,” said Mai. The winning streak of the evening was the Belgian Blue. Frank Murphy addressed the gathering detailing the impact which quality feed and good husbandry can have on the finished product. Dr Teresa McSweeney gave a heartfelt speech on behalf of Recovery Haven, referring to her own personal journey and the support received by Recovery Haven.

Lake Hotel Joins Exclusive Tranche Of Two AA Rosette-Holders In Kerry THE AA has announced the latest additions to its restaurant awards, with The Castlelough Restaurant at Killarney’s Lake Hotel winning two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence. Head Chef Noel Enright said of his two AA Rosette triumph: “We have had a long affiliation with the AA that goes back to 2010, so I’m really pleased that they have continued to support us. This fantastic accolade is a real coup for us.” Chef Enright is the only chef to currently hold two AA Rosettes in Killarney, and one of just four in Co. Kerry, joining the ranks of acclaimed eateries such as those at Ballyseede Castle, Sheen Falls Lodge and Park Hotel Kenmare.

As with all inspections, the AA hotel inspector used an alias when booking their unannounced visit to the Lake Hotel, ensuring an authentic guest experience. The most discerning of diners, the AA inspector's experience at The Castlelough Restaurant did not disappoint. To start, Dingle Bay crab paired with crisp apple, ginger mayonnaise with a refreshing mango salsa was taken. This was followed by a tender piece of venison accompanied by carrot purée and chestnuts. However, it was the dessert of red wine poached pear that almost stole the show. Served with a citrus sorbet, muscovado jelly and a honeycomb flavoured tuile, it was the perfect end to a fine dining experience for the AA inspector.

1916 COMMEMORATIONS IN KERRY

Kerry was central to plans for the Rising

THE past weekend has seen national commemorations of the 1916 Rising unfold in creative fashion and now, following the conclusion of the 1916 Commemorations in Dublin and elsewhere over the Easter Weekend, focus is turning to a series of planned commemorative events in Kerry. Our county was central to plans for the Rising and the scene of numerous pivotal events during the insurrection of 100 years ago. Kerry County Council’s Commemorations Office has unveiled plans for several commemorations, particularly at Valentia Island, from where the telegram was sent to US to alert Clan na Gael to the outbreak of the Rising; at Ballykissane near Killorglin, where three Volunteers drowned on their way to seize wireless radio equipment; and at Banna Strand, where Roger Casement, Robert Monteith and Daniel Bailey came ashore on Good Friday 1916. Renowned actor Dominic West will read the 1916 Proclamation tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, in Scoil Iosagáin, Ballybunion, at the commemoration in honour of Michael Mulvihill (Ballyduff), The O'Rahilly (Ballylongford), and Patrick Shortis (Ballybunion), the three north Kerry men who died in the Rising. Mass will take place at 7.30pm. A commemorative stone will be unveiled at Valentia Island on April 17 at 3pm; there will be a ceremony at Ballykissane Pier on April 21 at 8am; and there will be a State Commemoration at Banna Strand on April 21 at noon with the President of Ireland in attendance. The Kerry 2016 Office is inviting members of the public to participate in those commemorations and celebrate Kerry’s often-understated role in the events of a century ago. “Kerry was central to the preparations for the Rising with Tralee man Austin Stack charged with organising the landing of arms at Fenit at Easter 1916,” said Kate Kennelly, Kerry 2016 Co-ordinator. On Saturday, April 30, a plaque will be unveiled to Thomas Ashe and also that day, there will be a series of events in Ballylongford to honour The O’Rahilly.

Rathmore’s 1916 Commemoration THE Tricolour was blessed during 11.30 Mass on Easter Sunday in St Joseph’s Church in Rathmore. Following Mass, Corporal Breda O'Sullivan presented the lrish flag to a member of the Kingdom Hunt who formally brought it to the monument in Rathmore, where it was raised by Dan Joe O'Connor, nephew of Patrick O'Connor who died in action at the end of Easter Week 1916. He was assisted by Stephen Duffy, grandson of Jeremiah O'Leary, member of the lrish Volunteers. A wreath was laid at the monument by Breda Roche, grandniece of Padraig O'Keeffe who was part of the GPS Garrison Easter 1916. Anther wreath was laid by Michael O'Mahony on behalf of National Graves Association. The National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann, was played by Paul Sheerin on trumpet. “It is customary to recite the Rosary each year on Easter Sunday, but this year the decades were interspersed with information about Rathmore links with the Rising by John Stephen O'Sullivan,” said Michael O’Mahony of Rathmore Community Council. The Commemoration was concluded with the recitation of An Aisling."

Killarney Urged To Reach Out To Help Kenyan People In Need IT’S now an annual fixture on Killarney’s social calendar and the Kenya Education Project quiz takes place at the Castlerosse hotel on Thursday, April 7. The Kenya Education Project helps young people in a poor slum village of Embulbul, Nairobi. “At present 50 young people are sponsored to complete their secondary education as their own family circumstances make it very difficult to meet the cost of books, uniforms and fees,” said Eddie Sheehy of the Kenya Education Project. Some past pupils of the school are also helped to continue their education and training by paying college fees as well as travel and subsistence allowances. “To date the project has helped students to obtain training in childcare, computing, journalism and social work which is a major boost to their families in their dream of obtaining a job to ease the financial burden on their families,” said Eddie. He added: “Last year a 35-year-old man, Charles, who is visually impaired, living in the slum, with no means of an income was supported to attend a special school for the blind for the next two years hopefully to give him some skills to enable him to live independently and gain some employment.” The project continues to support sporting activities in the school and village by providing playing gear, footballs and training equipment to those involved in soccer, basketball and volleyball. “The support the project continues to receive each year is encouraging and heartening which enables many young people to be helped and supported. Thanks to everybody who has supported the project to date,” said Eddie.

How Has Killarney Fared Since The Abolition Of Town Councils? Plans for the biggest shake-up of local government in the history of the State came into effect following the local elections in 2014. Killarney Advertiser examines how it has affected our town THE abolition of town councils was wrong and should be reversed, according to Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin in 2015. While maintaining some reform was needed of the old system, he said Labour should include the restoration of local democracy and town councils in its election manifesto. Locally, it is believed the real impact has yet to be felt. “The real test will be in another three or four years,” said Councillor Michael Gleeson. The abolition has to have an overall impact as prior to abolition Killarney had its own revenue stream through rates and government allocations, noted

Cllr Gleeson. “Most of the money collected was for Killarney-specific purposes,” he said. “Approximately €2 million per annum went to Kerry County Council for what was termed the county at large charge (e.g library, fire service etc).” All revenue collection now is by and for the county at large where every area is rightly entitled to equality of treatment, added Cllr Gleeson. “The simple example that I sometimes give is: If Killarney is entitled to have Christmas decorations then so is Barraduff, Rathmore etc,” he said. “Thus far Killarney has been protected in this regard as special consideration has been given to the town in order to al-

low some continuity of service. But it is unlikely that this will continue indefinitely.” Killarney’s community groups and volunteers have enriched the area, but should they cease to exist there could well be serious implications, noted Cllr Gleeson. Since the abolition of the town council all Killarney businesses are paying a progressively increasing annual rate, he added. “This is so in order to achieve countywide rates harmonisation over eight years. The Killarney Municipal Authority does not have any meaningful specific budget,” said Cllr Gleeson. “It is allowed a relatively small discretionary sum each year to progress/achieve agreed projects within the entire Municipal District.

“I believe that the challenge to Killarney will become greater with the passage of time because rightful demands from elsewhere in the municipal district will increase. “Killarney is also blessed to have a wonderful staff indoors and out who have exceptional commitment to the welfare of the town. It is vital that this would continue.”

Councillor Michael Gleeson.

‘It Is Vital That The High Standards Of The Town Council Be Maintained For Killarney’ SIGNIFICANT changes in personnel meant that in some ways, Killarney’s business community had to start afresh when it came to engaging with the local authority following the demise of Killarney Town Council and the emergence of Killarney Municipal District. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Kate O’Leary said: “The transition from town council to municipal district authority was smooth, but as there were significant changes in personnel, time had to be invested in fostering new relationships.” Ms O’Leary added: “Killarney Chamber had over many years established a very successful working relationship with the Urban District Council.” Killarney Municipal District has put great work into developing strategies for the area with quite a lot of consultation, added the Killarney Chamber President. “It is absolutely vital that the high standards and achievements of the town council be maintained for Killarney, particularly in infrastructure, development and tidy towns,” she said. “In the lean years of the recession Killarney relied heavily on volunteerism for many town projects, this is unsustainable and will have to be

addressed. “We still feel strongly that there should be a dedicated tourism unit in Killarney as it is the tourism capital of the county and indeed the country.” Killarney has very specific marketing needs and as the key economic driver of tourism in the county, these needs cannot be overlooked, added Ms O’Leary. Having a mayor of Killarney is absolutely essential and this position must be upheld, while proportionate reinvestment is also key, she feels. “It is vital the Killarney Municipal District and Kerry County Council see that there is proportionate reinvestment into Killarney to the rates generated by Killarney,” said the Killarney Chamber president.

Killarney Chamber President Kate O’Leary.

‘Transition From Town Council To Municipal District Has Gone Well’ THE change from town council to municipal district went quite smoothly, many believe. Councillor Brendan Cronin said: “There was a lot of concern regarding the Government decision to abolish town councils; however in Killarney, I think the transition from town council to municipal district has gone well.” This is a result of the Killarney Municipal District having its own budget and maintaining council investment in services and important works in Killarney town, he noted. “It is also due to the joint collaboration and input of elected

members, council management and staff, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and voluntary organisations all working to benefit Killarney town and its hinterland,” added Cllr Cronin.

Brother And Sister Team Up For Charity HER brother William lent his support as Hannah Sherry held a special fundraiser in aid of a school in Africa. Hannah and William, from Headford, ran a crepe stall at Killarney Outlet Centre on Easter Sunday to generate cash for Dreamland School in Ghana. William also organised a raffle for an Easter egg to help fundraise for his sister. The sale of crepes and the raffle together raised an amazing total of €300 for which Hannah is very grateful and wanted to publicly thank and acknowledge all the people who bought crepes, donated or bought raffle tickets. Hannah’s school, Repton in Derbyshire, has forged close links with the Dreamland School in Ghana. “I will be one of eight fifth-year students from Repton travelling to Dreamland for two weeks in July,” said Hannah.

Hannah and her fellow students will spend two weeks helping improve conditions for their counterparts in Dreamland. The principal of Dreamland, Pastor James Dugger, made a lasting impression on Hannah and her classmates when he visited Repton in recent months. “Pastor James brought tears to our eyes when he thanked Repton for being such a massive part of Dreamland,” said Hannah. “We were all very moved as so many students at Dreamland are orphans or from underprivileged backgrounds and wouldn’t have had an education otherwise.” Watch this space for Hannah’s fundraisers or you can donate to the special fundraising account, Hannah Sherry, Bank of Ireland, Killarney, 65165754, Hannah and William Sherry, Killarney, with the Easter Bunny at The Killarney Outlet Centre. sort code 90 57 58. GARDEN MAGIC IN KILLARNEY MOST conversations around town over the past week will have had a reference to excitement revolving around the preview of Killarney House & Gardens on Sunday, April 3. This special preview opening will afford locals the earliest opportunity to see first hand the on-going restoration and re-creation of the gardens, which has been funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland. BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY DURING PREGNANCY Reflexology is a gentle therapy that encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

NEARLY everyone can benefit from reflexology during pregnancy, according to the Association of Reflexologists. During labour itself, reflexology can be used for relaxation and pain relief and research has shown that women who have regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy have far shorter labours than those who don't. Other benefits include relief from common pregnancy ailments such as morning sickness, backache, fluid

retention and swelling. Reflexology can also help you adjust to the demands of coping with a new baby and supports your body as your menstrual cycle returns to normal. As well as this, more research has shown that reflexology is excellent for maintaining or increasing milk supply as well as helping with postnatal depression and general relaxation. You can contact Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966.

Killarney Events Raise Aware-Ness THE dedicated work being carried out by depression support organisation Aware is finding back-up in Killarney. Two local ladies were behind key fundraisers at the end of the year that generated cash that will be put to good use by the charity locally. The now-annual Christmas Day dip at Dundag, organised by Niki McCarthy, Tiernaboul, raised an impressive €5,431 for Aware this year. Meanwhile, a new event, a special Christmas concert, was the brainchild of local singer and singing teacher Grace Foley. Grace co-ordinated the concert along with Paul O’Raw in the Church of the Resurrection and it raised €785. “Christmas can be such a magical, happy time of year, but it can also be a very difficult time for some people. I was aware of the fact that some people feel quite low and alone at Christmas and all the festivities and celebrations can be very overwhelming,” said Grace. “I am already brainstorming for this year's concert and I hope even more people will come along and not only experience something quite unique, but also support a very good cause. Aware is a very important charity. We all have either experienced low times in life, or know someone who has, so the support that Aware provides is invaluable.” Thanking all involved in the fundraisers, Dolores Gallagher, Aware’s Kerry co-ordinator, said: “Aware support groups support people who are impacted by Depression, anxiety and other mood-related disorders.” Meetings in Kerry are held in Killarney on Mondays in the local Kerry Diocesan Youth Service centre at 8pm and in Tralee on Tuesdays, at the rear of St John’s Church, at 8pm. Aware Support Groups are free to attend, no referral necessary. www. aware.ie

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIGHT OUR OF DARKNESS

IN THE words of Helen Keller: “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of people overcoming it.” There are people in our world and all around us who overcome suffering every day. We all know people who keep smiling and joking through serious illness or misfortune, and people who have many problems of their own but are still always available to help others. There are brave folks who, having lost a loved one to illness, go on to dedicate their time to charitable works and fundraising in the hope that others might avoid the same agony. And then there are people who, though themselves in the depths of pain or despair, can help others simply by empathising with their suffering. In different ways, these are all “Easter people”, full of hope and light amidst the darkness. They remind us that even in the darkest of situations, God’s light can shine. Today we celebrate the ultimate victory over suffering and death. We have journeyed this week through the darkness of loneliness, betrayal and abandonment into the light of forgiveness, healing and new life. In her poem Dawn, the poet Emily Dickinson wrote: “Not knowing when the dawn will come, I open every door.” Dawn will always emerge from darkness. If we want to be “Easter people”, we need to be open to throwing ourselves into the ups and downs, the sufferings and the joys of life, always open to experiencing resurrection and hope in all their forms. Christ is risen – alleluia! Tríona Doherty

‘Mr Brightside’ rendition boosts donor card requests IT BECAME an Internet sensation this week and now the rendition by a Killorglin man of The Killers hit Mr Brightside has boosted inquiries about organ donor cards. Last Thursday, Brian O’Sullivan got up on the bar in Falvey's pub and blasted out a rousing and emotional cover of Mr Brightside that got everyone in the crowd singing along with him. It was a moving tribute to local man Ger 'Farmer' Foley, whose funeral had taken place that day. Ger died, aged just 45, from complications from cystic fibrosis, leaving behind his wife and two children. Speaking to the Anton Savage Show, Brian said the song had special meaning to them as they had sung it together every New

Year's Eve. Ger, who was a sound engineer and music fan, received a double lung transplant 12 years ago which Brian says gave him "a new lease of life" and the opportunity to have his two children. Brian’s performance got the seal of approval of The Killers who tweeted: “Brian O'Sullivan, if Brandon ever needs a fill-in, we're calling you! May we all have friends like this.” The video went viral and prompted a surge in support for the Irish Kidney Association. Theresa Looney of the Kerry branch of the IKA said she has received a huge number of calls since the video, ahead of Organ Donor Awareness Week, which takes place next week.

Calling All Humanitarian Heroes NOMINATIONS are now being invited for the 2016 Hugh O'Flaherty International Humanitarian Award. As part of the ninth annual Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend, which will take place from Friday, November 4, to Sunday, November 6, in Killarney, the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society is inviting the public, NGOs/voluntary bodies and organisations to nominate the person or organisation they feel is doing outstanding humanitarian work and most deserving of the 2016 Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award. The 2015 Humanitarian Award recipient was Fr Sean Myers, a Redemptorist missionary in Brazil. From the spring of 1960, Fr Sean dedicated his life to the spiritual and practical needs of his vast parish in the remote areas of northeast Brazil. Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, who was from Killarney, was dubbed the Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican for his high-risk humanitarian exploits during the World War II Nazi occupation of Rome. During the course of the war he was instrumental in saving the lives of more than 6,500 anti-Fascists, Allied escapees, Jews and many others by hiding them from the Gestapo in a number of safe houses throughout Rome. Nominations for the 2016 Humanitarian Award should be submitted in writing to the Awards Committee at the below postal address, or by e-mail to hofmemorialsociety@gmail. com before Friday, June 24. The nomination, in no more than 500 words, should clearly outline the reasons why the nominator feels that the nominated individual/team/organisation, merits consideration for this award.

HOW TO SUPPORT ORGAN DONOR AWARENESS WEEK THERE are approximately 550 people in Ireland awaiting life-saving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants. Thanks to the gift of organ donation over 3000 people in Ireland are enjoying extended life. In 2015, 266 organs were transplanted, 233 were as a result of the generosity of the families of 81 deceased donors and the remaining 33 were from living kidney donors. St Vincent’s Hospital conducted 61 liver transplants in 2015. The Mater Hospital conducted a record 36 lung transplants as well as 16 heart transplants in 2015 and Beaumont Hospital carried out 153 kidney transplants including 33 from living donors. The focus of Organ Donor Awareness Week is to raise awareness about the ongoing and ever-increasing demand for organ transplantation which relies on the public for organ donation. Its key message is that families need to talk and keep the reminders of their willingness to donate visible by carrying the organ donor card, downloading the Smartphone App and permitting Code 115 to be included on their driver’s license. Organ Donor Awareness Week also serves as a fundraising exercise for the Irish Kidney Association. During the week, April 2-9, the association’s volunteers will be out on the streets selling forget-me-not flower emblems. All proceeds will go towards the Irish Kidney Association’s aid for patients on dialysis and those patients fortunate enough to have received a kidney transplant. You can also text “kidney” to 50300 and €2 will be donated from your mobile phone account to the IKA. The Irish Kidney Association is the national organisation charged with the promotion and distribution of the organ donor card in Ireland, on behalf of Organ Donation Transplant Ireland. Organ Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association on LoCall 1890 543639 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050. Visit website www.ika.ie It is now possible to store an organ donor card, the ‘ecard’ on Smart mobile phones. Simply search for ‘Donor ECard’ at the IPhone Store or Android Market Place.

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

A GENERATION DENIED TRADITIONAL RITES OF PASSAGE THE patriots of 1916 fought for freedom for future generations to take hold of their destiny, but what would they make of the plight of young people today? Many will complain of the generational injustice that sees the up and coming generation denied traditional rites of passage, such as moving out from home, buying a house, getting a job. As a society we place a great deal of value on education. Ireland has one of the highest rates in the world of university education. Today more than half of Irish people under 35 have third-level qualifications. That is the highest in all of Europe.

But the unemployment rate for younger workers has been higher than for older workers throughout this recession. The youth unemployment rate in Ireland averaged 18.48% from 1983 until 2015, reaching an all-time high of 31.1% in June 2012. This has forced many out of their own nation to make their life in other countries. The new income requirements together with increased deposits introduced by the Central Bank, price most young people out of the housing market while rents have soared to ridiculous heights. Studies show the average age that young people try to buy their first home is currently up to 35. Writing in the Irish Independent this week, Lorraine Courtney describes how the “barriers to adulthood are being reinforced rather than coming down”.

Is it right that we live in a society that has conspired to push the dream of a bright future ever farther away for younger generations?

MIGRANT CHAOS UNHCR and Médecins Sans Frontières say they will not be involved with EU-Turkey deal to send people back from Greece. A severe blow has been dealt to the integrity of the EU-Turkey migration deal after the two leading aid groups refused to work with Brussels on its implementation, and a senior Greek official said nobody knew how the agreement was supposed to work. The UN refugee agency said it was suspending most of its activities in refugee centres on the Greek islands because they were now being used as detention facilities for people due to be sent back to Turkey. UNHCR was later joined by Médecins Sans Frontières, which said it did not want to be involved in the blanket expulsion of refugees because it contravened international law. The UNHCR spokeswoman, Melissa Fleming, said: “UNHCR is not a party to the EU-Turkey deal, nor will we be involved in returns or detention. We will continue to assist the Greek authorities to develop an adequate reception capacity.” In a separate and stronger statement, Marie Elisabeth Ingres, MSF’s head of mission in Greece, said: “We will not allow our assistance to be instrumentalised for a mass expulsion operation and we refuse to be part of a system that has no regard for the humanitarian or protection needs of asylum seekers and migrants.” Over the past year, around one million people have crossed the narrow straits between Turkey and Greece to try to claim asylum in Europe. In an attempt to stop this flow, the EU and Turkey reached a deal last week that would see almost all asylum seekers returned to Turkish soil. To do this, the EU has deemed Turkey a safe country for refugees; a decision strongly contested by rights groups. Turkey is not a full signatory to the UN refugee convention, and while it has accepted more Syrian refugees than any other country, it has sometimes forcibly returned Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan asylum seekers to their countries of origin. While a law introduced in January nominally allowed some Syrians to gain legal work, aid groups said they had not yet heard of any Syrian being granted a work permit under the law. There are severe practical problems with the deal. Greece needs an extra 4,000 asylum officials from the rest of the EU in order to deport such a high number of people. Scenes of chaos awaited the thousands of EU staff when they arrived on the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios to begin processing asylum seekers under a controversial EU deal to deport them back to Turkey. Protests erupted in detention camps on Lesbos and Chios where living conditions have become increasingly squalid following the withdrawal of the NGOs. Clashes also broke out between Greek security forces and activists. While arrivals have declined significantly over the past week, migrant boats are still making the trip and there are questions over how rapidly the 4,000-strong EU team will be able to process the asylum claims, each of which must be assessed individually. The returns are to begin on April 4, with one Syrian refugee to be relocated from a Turkish camp to Europe in exchange for each migrant deported. The aim is for 6,000 relocations to be completed within the next month and at least 20,000 by mid-May 2016. An estimated 47,500 migrants are currently stranded on Greek territory after the route through the Balkans slammed shut.

New dual role for chief superintendent in fight against crime THE chief superintendent for the Limerick Garda Division will be Kerry’s head police officer until a permanent appointment has been made. Chief Superintendent David Sheahan now has a dual role which sees him take charge of running the Kerry Division in addition to Limerick. Delays appointing a replacement for the recently retired Kerry Division Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan were exacerbated by the lack of a government. Although Chief Superintendent Sheahan’s appointment is temporary it is unclear when a successor to Chief Supt Sullivan will be appointed. Chief Superintendent Sheahan, who has helped lead the fight against gangland crime in Limerick, said there has always been a good relationship between gardaí in Kerry and Limerick.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD LABELS Many children are needlessly prescribed drugs to combat ADHD when they are just immature, a study suggests. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is vastly over-diagnosed with many cases simply immature children who are the youngest in their class, a new study suggests. The term ADHD is often used for a collection of behavioural problems linked to poor attention span including impulsiveness, restlessness and inability to concentrate. Around three to seven per cent of British children are believed to have ADHD, about 400,000, with many being prescribed drugs to try and improve their concentration at school. Prescriptions for drugs like Ritalin have doubled to 922,000 a year in the last decade for children diagnosed with ADHD but such medications can cause adverse reactions such as weight loss, liver toxicity, and suicidal thoughts, and in the short-term may suppress pubertal growth. Now a study of nearly 400,000 children between four and 17 years old in Taiwan has shown that the percentage of youngsters diagnosed with ADHD significantly changes depending on month of birth. Where just 2.8 per cent of boys born in September have the condition, the figure jumps to 4.5 per cent in August, rising steadily over the school year. For girls it rose from 0.7 to 1.2 per cent. The authors say that many cases may be caused by teachers comparing the behaviour of more mature children to those of youngsters who are up to a year younger. “Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder. ADHD begins in childhood and manifests as an inability to marshal and sustain attention and modulate activity level and impulsive actions,” said lead author Dr Mu-Hong Chen, of the Department of Psychology at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. “When looking at the database as a whole, children born in August were more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD and/or receive ADHD medication than those born in September. Relative age, as an indicator of neurocognitive maturity, may play a crucial role in the risk of being diagnosed with ADHD and receiving ADHD medication among children and adolescents. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering the age of a child within a grade when diagnosing ADHD and prescribing medication to treat ADHD." The NHS describes the disorder as being 'a group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness'. Common symptoms include a short attention span, restlessness or constant fidgeting and being easily distracted, the health service says. Many people with ADHD also have learning difficulties and other problems such as sleep disorders. The condition is normally diagnosed between the ages of three to seven. However some neuroscientists believe the condition does not exist at all arguing that most people will display some, or all, of the signs during their lifetime. Dr Kuben Naidoo, Consultant Psychiatrist & Chairman of ADHD Foundation, said: “The study highlights the importance of ensuring the assessment for ADHD is rigorous and relies on a variety of sources of information that support the clinician in deciding whether the diagnosis is met. In the UK setting the assessment and diagnosis of ADHD across the lifespan is robust and relies on information gathered from a number of sources including the family and school. This then coupled with information obtained from a clinical interview by a specialist paediatrician or psychiatrist. The option to treat with medication is not taken lightly and consideration is also given to psychological strategies to support the individual. This decision on the type of treatment would be influenced by the degree of impairment experienced by the individual. The issue is not as simple as assuming that age, as an indicator of neurocognitive maturity, influences ADHD symptoms as we do see a significant number of adults presenting to psychiatric services for the first time with symptoms of ADHD.” The research was published in the Journal of Paediatrics.

Man makes public plea for teenage sister's life-saving operation 'If she stays in Kerry for another two or three days, the most likely outcome is that she'll die’ A MAN has made a moving public plea on behalf of his sister who he says will die within the next few days if she doesn’t get a lifesaving operation in Cork or Limerick. Paddy Kevane contacted the Right Hook on Newstalk and said his sister Brenda Kevane (18) will die unless she gets a life-saving operation. He said Ms Kevane is currently in an induced coma in Kerry University Hospital awaiting a hospital bed Cork or Limerick, where she can have a lifesaving operation on her airways. “The issue now is every hospital is overflowing and she can’t get a bed in either hospital,” Mr Kevane told George Hook. He added that his sister couldn’t travel to Dublin or anywhere beyond Cork or Limerick as she “won’t make it”. “The issue with travelling to Dublin is that she wouldn’t make it. They think it would be safer if she went to Limerick or Cork,” he said. The HSE later issued the programme with the statement stating that it is “inappropriate to comment on individual cases. "We would advise the individual who contacted you to speak directly with the patient’s medical team. We have contacted the two hospitals involved to get an update on the overall ICU situation but we would stress that patients are prioritised on the basis of clinical need.” Ms Kevane, who will be 19 in two weeks’ time, has been in the intensive care unit in Tralee for the past 10 days. “My sister is dying. No consultant no ICU bed available,” said Paddy in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon.

Rower Monika inspires Kerry’s leaders and champions to dream big with Nissan

KILLORGLIN rower Monika Dukarska is playing an inspirational role in encouraging Kerry’s next generation of leaders and champions to follow their dreams with the support of Nissan. Monika has become one of the country’s top rowers since she joined the Nissan Generation Next programme which provides Ireland’s rising stars with a brand new, taxed and insured Nissan to drive for a year. Applications for this year’s Nissan Generation Next programme are now open and Monika is calling on Kerry’s innovators and movers and shakers to apply so that they might follow in her footsteps. “Anyone who wants to get ahead should apply. It is definitely worth it. I did not really expect to win when I applied but anyone who is ambitious should not underestimate their chances of getting the keys to a brand-new Nissan,” said Monika. Monika drove away with the keys to a Nissan Pulsar when she was selected from the hundreds of high achievers around the country who applied to be part of the Nissan Generation Next programme in 2015.

Recent illness has forced Monika to pull back from her attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio, but she has bounced back with a move from the women’s pair discipline to single sculling as part of a longer-term strategy to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. “Without the car I would not be able to train as easily as I do. It has given me huge independence to travel from Kerry to Cork for training, to Tralee for college and to the lake in Cromane which is great for training 24/7 because I don’t have to worry about low tides,” Monika said. “People in Kerry are definitely more aware of who I am driving the car. My coach was telling some locals in Cromane that I would be coming to train there and they told him they already knew that because they had seen me in the Nissan Generation Next ambassador car.” Applicants for the 2016 Nissan Generation Next progamme can apply online at www.nissangenerationnext.ie.

Kerry hotels to star on the small screen KERRY hotels will b hotels featuring in a new nostalgic six-part series on the history of Ireland’s hotels. The programmes, which will be aired on Sundays, starting from April 3, and repeated on Mondays, feature untold stories, fascinating nuggets of history and heart-warming personal experiences. The Gleneagle, the Lake Hotel, The Malton and the Killarney Park Hotel are Killarney Hotels featuring while the Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville also participates in the series. Using a mixture of interview, narration, and archive this series reveals the extraordinary stories behind some of Ireland’s most famous hotels and the impact they have had on their local communities. It explores a wide range of different hotels all over Ireland – some very well known, others less so – but all with great stories to tell: The history of these hotels allows us to tell bigger stories of war (World War 1, the Easter Rising, the War of Independence), celebrity visits. We also find out about the family dynasties that pioneered the Irish hotel industry.

Fossa Fundraiser In Aid Of Burns Unit ALL are welcome to support a coffee morning in aid of the burns unit at St James's Hospital on Friday, April 8. Cathriona and Pat Clifford will host the event in their home in Dromin, Fossa, from 10am to 1pm. Cathriona is fundraising to help her friend Joanne McMahon who received life-saving treatment at the unit. Joanne, from Newcastlewest, trained as a nurse with Cathriona in 1985 in St John’s Hospital in Limerick. Joanne was cooking at a family barbecue when the accident occurred, on May 30, 2014. She didn't realise there was an open flame on the bain-marie (a type of heated bath used in cooking) when she threw methylated spirits onto it. The front of her body, including her face, neck and hands, were engulfed in a ball of fire. The mother-of-five was initially airlifted from her home to Cork University Hospital, and then transferred to the National Burns Unit at St James's Hospital, where she spent a month in an induced coma, and a total of 131 days re-learning how to walk and swallow. Joanne has set up the Joanne McMahon Thanksgiving Fund. “My ultimate aim is to give back to the burns unit. I wasn't familiar with the burns unit until I ended up there myself,” she said. Study says mortgage repayment affordability improves

"

MORTGAGE affordability for firsttime buyers is improving, according to the latest EBS DKM Affordability Index. This is due to a combination of lower loan to value (LTV) ratio for first-time buyers, a two per cent increase in average earnings in 2015 and a reduction in average mortgage interest rates to 3.7% in January 2016 compared with 4.3% one year earlier. Affordability is defined as the proportion of after-tax

5 Aghadoe Woods, Barleymount Middle, Aghadoe, Killarney THIS fine detached family home has just been launched to the market by DNG Ted Healy. The property offers a great opportunity to acquire a detached family residence in a strong residential location close to Killarney. The Barleymount, Aghadoe area has long been an attractive address for residential homes. The property forms part of a private development of eight detached residences and boosts wonderful mountain views. The property sits on a generous elevated site of approximately one acre and has a large detached garage. Accommodation is spacious with two reception rooms on either side of a large entrance hallway. The large kitchen feeds off to a side sunroom which benefits from all-

day sunshine. A utility room, guest bedroom and WC facilities complete the ground floor. On first floor one finds four bedrooms (two ensuite) and a family bathroom. The house has oil central heating, PVC woodgrain double-glazed windows and septic tank drainage. The BER is C1. This property is on the market for €350,000 and selling agent Ted Healy, expects significant interest. “Given the location and nature of the property we expect a high level of interest in this fine family home. Renault Megane Sport Tourer: It's the new 2016 Megane estate THE new Megane estate is claimed to have the longest maximum load length in the sector at 2.77m, and its boot space can be split into different sections to store the paraphernalia of family life. At 580 litres the boot is the same size as the previous-generation Megane estate, but now features new lateral storage bins on either side next to the wheelarches, and a brace of bag hooks. The boot floor has two positions, the upper one to create a flat floor when the rear seats are folded and the lower to help load tall items, and there are separate sub-partitions to help prevent items sliding forwards and backwards. There’s space for the roll-up luggage cover under the floor. A vertical luggage net is an option. The rear seats split 60:40 and flip down via handles in the boot, but the Megane Tourer’s ace card is its fold-flat front passenger seat, which enables that near2.8m load length handy for skirting boards, flat-pack wardrobes and the like. Up front, there’s a colour headup display, 7in digital instrument panel and 8.7in portrait-format

touchscreen. The warmed-up GT model is a kind of halfway-house Renaultsport performance estate, perked up with the addition of a sportier front air dam, anodised roofrails and honeycomb-mesh grille, with flash diamond-cut finish 18in alloys an option. It’s a similar story inside: bucket seats with integrated headrests, blue stitching and optional alcantara trim for the full faux rally experience, aluminium pedals and a sportier gearlever (or shift-paddle) design. The GT spec model also gets ‘4Control’, claimed to be the world’s first four-wheel steering system offered on a C-segment estate. It adjusts the rear steering angle up to 100 times a second, swivelling the wheels in parallel to the fronts for stability and faster corners and the opposite way at parking speeds to decrease the turning circle. Renault claims the Megane Tourer is the lowest vehicle in its class with the widest track, so it’s already off to a head start on the stability front.

After 59 years, Jaguar rebuild XKSS sports carsv NINE new XKSS's will be hand built by Jaguar Classic, to the exact specification as they appeared in 1957. Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said, "The XKSS occupies a unique place in Jaguar's history and is a car coveted by collectors the world over for its exclusivity and unmistakable design." "Jaguar Classic's highly skilled team of engineers and technicians will draw on decades of knowledge to ensure each of the nine cars is completely authentic and crafted to the highest quality," Hannig further added. The original cars were earmarked for export to the USA, however, just 16 were completed before disaster struck. On the evening of Febru-

ary 12, 1957, a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying nine of the twenty-five cars that had already been completed or were semi-completed. Most of the surviving 16 XKSSs were sold in the USA. Jaguar have announced that it would be completing the original 25-car order from 1957 by building from scratch the remaining nine cars destroyed by the plant fire. The cars are expected to sell for more than €1.3 million.

20th Birthday Remembrance

A thousand words could never say, How much I miss you every single day, My thoughts are always with you, Your place no one can fill, In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. I know you walk beside me, And when my life is through, I pray that God will take my hand, And lead me straight to you. So dearly loved and sadly missed by your loving wife Nor. xxx Dad Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, Still we have so many memories, Of the one we loved so much, Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you in His keeping, We have you in our hearts. Loved and missed everyday From your son Padraig, Elaine, Lauren, Jason, Adam and Rebekah. Rest In Peace xxxx It’s been seven long years since I saw your face, Heard your voice, you bought a pint or watched a race. Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. In God’s care you rest above, In my heart you rest with love. Rest in peace Dad. Loved and remembered by your loving son Gerard. xxx The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. I often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a trip down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, But missing you is the heartache, That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you shall remain. For those who still have their Dads, Treat him with tender care, You will never know the emptiness, As you turn and he’s not there. Always in our thoughts Dad, your loving daughter Majella, Kieran and Doireann. xxx

In first place were Luke Walsh and Luke Sweeney with an excellent score of 41 points, this was a huge boost for youth overcoming experience, with many of our seasoned “foursomes” partnerships failing to even qualify, and it was just as well that the Club Captain and his partner were automatic qualifiers for the knock-out stages as their score was well off the qualifying mark of 29 points. In second place were the seasoned and experienced pairing of Shane Connole and Mike Tangney, Liam says that they would have been one of the bookies “pre tournament” favourites having gone a long way in last year’s competition, 50 pairs took part and the top 31 qualified to join the Captain and his partner. 1st Luke Walsh (8) and Luke Sweeney (14) with 41 points. 2nd Shane Connole (9) and Mike Tangney (10) with 38 points. 3rd David MacIndoe (13) and Ewan MacIndoe (16) with 38 points. 4th Jason Arthur (6) and Patrick Buckley (16) with 37 points. Open Day, Monday 28th March played on Mahony’s Point. The “Open” day

took place on Mahony’s Point on Monday the 29th of March it was played in very trying conditions once again, as storm “Katie” was still hanging around, the top two places were filled by our own members who would have enjoyed an advantage over visitors in such weather conditions, and the winner was Shane Connole who has been featuring regularly in the prize winners enclosure, as is Tony Walsh who was in second place, Tony plays off 20 handicap, but probably not for much longer, and, no doubt, they have come to the attention of Club Handicap Secretary James Curran once again. 1st Shane Connole (9) with 42 points. 2nd Tony Walsh (20) with 41 points. On a counter attack Rafa Barthy got on the end of a Maison Ferris cross to finish. A defensive error left Castlegregory in for an equaliser to leave the sides level at half time. With 2 changes at half time, athletic upped the tempo and it was substitute Daniel O’Sullivan who took a pot shot with his left leg from 30 yards that left the keeper stranded. Further goals from Rafa Barthy and a cracker from man of the match Ciaran Spillane ensured a 4-1 victory. Best for athletic were Ciaran Spillane, Dylan Hayes and Shane Lyne. Retired Nurses Association Update AT THE annual general meeting of the Kerry Branch of Retired Nurses Association held in the Killarney Court Hotel chairman Ned Brosnan paid tribute to the officers and members of the various sub committees who had contributed to the success of the branch during 2015. Honorary secretary Nora Moynihan reported on the various activities which the branch was engaged in during the season which included a most enjoyable two-day trip to Galway, as well as the annual Christmas dinner. Nora paid a special tribute to assistant secretary Maureen Young who introduced the text messaging system as a means of keeping the members of the association aware of its activities. A special word of thanks was extended to the management of the Killarney Court Hotel who facilitated meetings of the branch and the various media outlets. Nora also complimented the local SIPTU office and the HSE for their assistance and co-operation with the branch. Various issues relevant to retirees were under discussion and it was generally felt that there should be better feedback from the Alliance of Public Servants with which the RNAI is now aligned. Call for new road from Castlelough to Lissivigeen I BROUGHT a notice of motion before the full meeting of Kerry County Council asking for a new road from Castlelough to Lissivigeen. I am very disappoint- Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae. ed with the negative reply from Transport Infrastructure Ireland as it states that it has no plans to progress this at present. on the ball

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry in prime position for an Allianz Football League semi-final spot KERRY put themselves in a perfect position for a semi-final place when a tremendous second half performance saw them get the better of Monaghan by an eight points margin (1-17 to 1-9) in the Allianz Football League Round 6 game at Clones on Sunday. Employing extra men at the back, the home side gave as good as they got during the first half after which the sides retired on level terms six points apiece. With wind advantage, Kerry upped the tempo in the second half hitting an amazing six points in 11 minutes and though they conceded a goal against the run of play that reduced the deficit to just three point, Kerry hit back to score 1-3 without reply something that must have pleased manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice no end. So, with one round of the League proper to go, Kerry will no doubt be pleased to have put a four game winning streak together given that the prophets of doom were forecasting a visit to Division 2 following a poor start which saw them ship defeats at the hands of Dublin and Roscommon. Performances in those games were certainly disappointing but Kerry have recovered well with many of their injured stars returning to training and some of those that had been absent making a welcome return to form. Semi-final place up for grabs at Austin Stack Park Kerry and Cork renew rivalry on Sunday next in Tralee’s Austin Stack Park (2pm) in a game that will decide who will advance to the League semi finals. Kerry of

course have put together a four-match winning streak but their opponent’s season has been a bit topsy-turvy mixing the good with the bad. Cork opened with a good win over Mayo and had two good wins in the last two rounds over Down last Sunday and Monaghan, however, they shipped a heavy defeat at the hands of Roscommon and also lost to both Donegal and Dublin. They did perform very well in that game against Dublin it must be said and that performance gave them the impetus for successive wins in the last two rounds. While the points at stake will be vital on Sunday, I have no doubt that both sides will also have an eye on a possible championship meeting later in the year and neither side will want to give an inch. Cork of course are under new management in Peadar Healy, a man who is no stranger to Kerry football having been involved with the Dr Crokes management team last year and no doubt he will be wanting to lay down a marker in his opening game against the “ould enemy”. Everything points at a cracking game of football, a big crowd and an electric atmosphere in Austin Stack Park.

On Saturday, in a division 1B round 1 back game, Kenmare travel to Listry, for the home teams last round game in the league, in a game that is important for both teams, where relegation to division 2 remains to be decided. In order to support these club competitions/ skills tests, all clubs have been sent a copy of the skills and marking sheet for selecting the 3 players to take part in the Divisional final.

Tickets may be pre-purchased or are available on the day at the ticket vans which will be located in the main entrance Car Park. Stiles, including those at the Mitchel’s and Horan’s ends, will open at 12pm. There will be a designated stile for season ticket holders.

Credit Union Senior Football League

A curtailed Round 2 of the Credit Union senior football league went ahead over the weekend. A Number of games, particularly Division 3, were deferred to the coming weekend due to the senior football championship qualifier game on Friday evening between St Brendans and Shannon Rangers. So there is a full round of fixtures in Division 3 this weekend, and two more in Division 4 and at the time of going to press, all of those games are scheduled for Sunday at 12 noon, however, it is very likely that some, if not all of the games will be brought forward to Saturday. The Division 1 meeting of Milltown-Castlemaine and John Mitchels will be played on Saturday at 5.30pm. Meanwhile, following last weekend’s games, Dingle, Dr Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and newly promoted Templenoe have full points in Division 1; St Marys, An Ghaeltacht and Emmetts have maximum points in Division 2; Fossa, under new manager John Evans, and Skellig Rangers have full points ion Division 4 and in Division 5, Tuosist, Castlegregory and Austin Stacks top the table with full points.

Fossa

Fossa GAA: Lotto 27th March 2016 Numbers drawn were 1, 6, 13, 18. There was no jackpot winner and the Next weeks jackpot will be €6,450. Tickets are on sale at The Golden Nugget Bar, The Castlerosse Leisure Centre, The Travel Inn, The Old Killarney Inn, Foley’s Spar Shop, The Laurels Bar and Committee members. Seniors Fossa played Renard in Fossa on Sunday afternoon in Round 2 of the county league. This was a very hard fought and entertaining game which was in the balance right to the final whistle. Fossa held on to win by the slimmest of margins 0-10 to 1-06. This was another good win for Fossa where their fitness and work rate in the second half paid off, their substitutions worked well with Davod Osterloh, Chris Myers, Mikey O’Shea and Daniel O’Connell playing a huge part in this win and the experience of players like Shane Malone, Dara Rice, Fintan Coffey, Tadgh O’ Shea, Donald O’Sullivan and Paudie Clifford really complementing the younger players on the team. Minors Fossa had a tough outing against Castlegregory on Friday evening in the Minor county league, conditions weren’t great with a strong wind making scoring difficult. Fossa started brightly and took the lead with points from Eamonn Murphy and Liam Buckley, however Castlegregory struck for two quick goals and never lost the lead thereafter. Cian O’ Shea won great ball at centre field and Liam Buckley was unerring from placed balls, Gary Cronin kicked a great point but they trailed 3-02 to 0-06 at half time. Castlegregory, with the aid of the wind, controlled the second half and ran out winners 4-11 to 0-06. Fossa were without some key players on the evening and this young team will have better days ahead. Best of Luck Fossa GAA Club would like to wish David Clifford the very best of luck next Saturday when he lines out with the Sem in the All-Ireland final of the Hogan Cup where they play St Pat’s of Maghera in Croke Park at 3pm. David is a fantastic talent and we hope he gets to display all his skills in the home of Gaelic football. This is a prestigious competition which is the premier competition for schools football. Golf Society Old Killarney Inn Golf Society membership now available. New members welcome. 1st outing to Kenmare Saturday 9th April. Legion

COUNTY LEAGUE Saturday evening’s trip to Strand Road ended in disappointment as the lads fell to their second defeat of the campaign. Our kicking left plenty to be desired and with Tommy Walsh racking up the frees at the other end, it was always going to be an uphill battle. First half goals from Conor Keane and Billy McGuire kept Legion in it at the break and when Donal Lyne added a third just after half-time the sides were level, in spite of the fact that we had yet to kick a point. Rahillys, meanwhile, were far more efficient in front of the posts and eased back into the lead. David O’Sullivan kicked our only point of the day with five minutes remaining and the home side held on for a comfortable six-point win. Final score: Kerins O’Rahillys 0-16 Legion 3-1. LADIES Our ladies picked up another win in the Division 4 Championship on Sunday, beating Kerins O’Rahillys on a 5-20 to

0-1 scoreline. FASHION SHOW “One of the greatest, most glamorous Fashion Shows ever held in this country.” That’s how last year’s show was described and this year’s event promises to be even better. We are delighted to be heading back to The Malton Hotel on Thursday, April 28th, and once again the Norma O’Donoghue Modelling Agency will be hosting the show. Exhibitors will include the very top fashion designers and boutiques in Ireland. MC for the night will be Alan Finn and hoping to take time out of his busy schedule to join us will be TV3’s Noel Cunningham. All this for the unbelievable value of €25, which includes a wine reception. Demand for tickets is already huge so don’t miss out. Tickets available at The Malton Hotel, Sewells Pharmacy, Keanes Jewellers, Kerry’s Boutique and any member of the Club Executive. PARADE Well done to everyone involved in our fantastic entry for the St Patrick’s Day parade. Legion walked away with the overall winners prize, the Seán O’Keeffe Perpetual Trophy. A great achievement and well-deserved. LOTTO SELLERS A reminder that the club are seeking new lotto sellers in an effort to raise much needed funds to run the club. We’re looking for as many people as possible to sell just five tickets a week. Each ticket costs €2 but if you add up a year of selling just five tickets a week, you would be generating over €500 for the club. We’re looking for parents, players and supporters to row in behind us in this venture as every euro raised goes towards improving the club’s facilities. If interested please contact Seánie Culloty on 087 2225325. CLOTHES COLLECTION Another reminder that we’ll be collecting unwanted clothes throughout the year. The next collection is on Saturday, April 16th before twelve noon. All unwanted clothes, bags, belts, shoes, blankets, towels, curtains etc. will be accepted, as will old phones and laptops. EXAM STUDENTS: We wish all our club members the very best in their forthcoming oral and practical examinations in the Leaving Certificate. This can be a very stressful time for students, so let’s all do our best to support them. UNDER 16’s: Our U16 team went down to Churchill by a single point, in Churchill, on Thursday evening last- on a score line of 2-10 to 2-11. It was their first outing this year- so great credit is due to every player given the very competitive performance in what was a very tight game. The team will learn a lot from this game and no doubt improve as the year goes on. Next game is away to Glenbeigh/ Glencar/Cromane On Easter Monday. Milltown Listry’s ladies Football

Milltown Listry Ladies played Austin Stacks in Listry today. It was a very exciting and entertaining game even though conditions weren’t great, this didn’t stop the girls from both teams of giving a great display of football. At half time Milltown Listry had a good lead with the wind in their favour . The second half was a different story with Austin Stacks having the advantage of the breeze and they ploughed their way back into the game and gave us a very exciting finish. Final score was Milltown Listry 3 goals and 9 points to
