Wall collapses at popular riverbank walk in Killarney A WALL bounding the Deenagh River and Port Road in Killarney partially collapsed into the river last weekend.

The wall, opposite St Mary's Cathedral, lines a route which is hugely popular with walkers and stretches along the

riverbank for one kilometre. The damage will now be assessed by Kerry County Council. “We are waiting for a specialist contractor to inspect it and advise on the appropriate remediation measure,” stated Kerry County Council.

EDITOR'S VIEW Killarney on the march for January THE ancient Roman god Janus, who inspired this month’s name, would be delighted to see Killarney is striding forth with gusto in every sense this year.

Janus, in Roman mythology, is the god of beginnings and transitions, as well as gateways and doorways, and so is depicted with two faces.

Last Saturday the gateway to good health swung open for the 147 men, women and children (some with four-legged friends in tow) who gathered at the entrance to Muckross Traditional Farms in Killarney National Park to take part in the seventh annual National Operation Transformation Walk Day. Organised by the volunteers behind the Parkrun walks and runs, the event’s impressive turnout was a tribute to organ-

And the future and the past combine wonderfully at Cinema Killarney this month in a bid to save lives; see details on this page of how Ireland’s first “talkie”, The Dawn, will be screened every Tuesday for the rest of the month and on the first Tuesday in February in aid of the Heart of Killarney project which aims to set up a “telephone box” defibrillator in Woodlawn.

THE classic movie The Dawn, which was written and directed by Killarney man Tom Cooper in 1936, was the first talkie made in Ireland and now it is poised to help generate funds to help saves lives in Killarney.

In December, moviegoers were delighted to see it restored to its former glory at Cinema Killarney, owned by Mr Cooper’s grandson Tom Cooper, and the good news is it will be screened again in Cinema Killarney on Tuesday, January 17, Tuesday, January 24, and Tuesday, January 31, Tuesday, February 7. Admission is €5 and all the money will go towards the Heart of Killarney project, which

aims to see old Irish telephone boxes used to highlight the locations of, and house, defibrillators.

The first telephone box was established on Main Street in November and plans are in place for another, with the Woodlawn area proposed as its location. "We would like to say a special thanks to the Cooper family and Cinema Killarney,” said Damien Baker of Heart of Killarney. “Killarney has inspired towns across Ireland to role this idea out so we can look forward to seeing phone boxes play an important role in Ireland once again." Tickets are available from the box office at Cinema Killarney.

Aidan O’Mahony on fire for first performance

HIS odds to win Dancing with the Stars shortened to 7/1 after Aidan O’Mahony’s sizzling salsa on Sunday evening, according to odds compiled by BoyleSports Bookmaker.

RTÉ’s Dancing With The Stars garnered an average audience of 640,000 viewers for its debut episode.

Judges said they felt the Rathmore and Kerry football star could well be the “dark horse in the competition”.

One of 11 celebrities to line out for RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars, Aidan’s fancy footwork was also a hit in December when he took part in Strictly Come Dancing at Killarney’s INEC in aid of the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland.

For the TV series, the two-time All Star and multiple All-Ireland winner is partnered with professional dancer Valerie Milova.

The 12-week show, presented by Amanda Byram and Nicky Byrne, airs on RTÉ One from 6.30pm.

KILLARNEY mourned gifted artist Ted Jones who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday night at the age of 65.

Dublin-born Ted, who had lived in Killarney for many years, created works that are seen in businesses and homes across the globe.

A famous collection, the Seven Deadly Sins, will be familiar to many, while another iconic painting was a portrait of Antarctic explorer Tom Crean.

His first one-man exhibition in Killarney 12 years ago rapidly sold out.

"Ted's legacy to us all, his paintings and prints, adorn the walls of many public and private collections the world over,” said his friend and owner of Killarney Art Gallery Declan Mulvaney.

“At his best he was masterful in his chosen profession. Through his talents he brought much joy to many. His work will live on, may he rest in peace."

Suspicious visits to homes in Kilcummin area KILLARNEY GARDAÍ have received reports of suspicious visits by a man to residences in Kilcummin.

Yesterday, Wednesday, January 11, a male called to three homes in the area, claiming to be from the Department of Social Protection. “This male stated that persons over 70 years could avail of free tel-

History brought to life to conclude centenary celebrations THE commemoration of the name change of Henn Street to Plunkett Street and Pound Row to Michael Collins Place marked the conclusion of the centenary celebrations 1916-2016 at the end of last month.

The commemoration of the name-change, which took place in 1968, was hosted

by Craobh na nÁirne, Conradh na Gaeilge, and unfolded at Killarney Outlet Centre.

Councillor Brendan Cronin, mayor of Killarney Municipal District, outlined the State occasions and other events staged in the county by Kerry County Council.

Senator Paul Coghlan traced the efforts of Killarney Urban District Council in the 1965-1966 period to hold plebiscites among the ratepayers to bring about a change in the streetscape giving us both Plunkett Street and Michael Collins Place. This honoured the principal military tacticians of 1916 and the War of Independence.

Local historian Conor Doolan presented an illustrated talk about Michael Collins and his association with Killarney.

Sean O Luanaigh of Craobh na nÁirne, Conradh na Gaeilge, delivered a short biography of Joseph Plunkett and at intervals Diarmuid Coakley brought the details to life as Plunkett speaking in his own words. “Killarney School of Music finished off the interactive commemoration with a wonderful rendition of the poignant song Grace and the National Anthem,” said Sean.

RATHMORE and surrounding areas were shocked The late and saddened by Denis (Garry) O’Leary. the death of Denis (Garry) O’Leary who passed away suddenly on January 3.

Tributes were paid to Mr O’Leary, of Gleann na Gréine and The Forge, Rathmore, at the Requiem Mass in St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore, led by parish priest Fr Pat O’Donnell on Saturday.

A busy taxi driver, Mr O’Leary was well known in Rathmore and beyond. His neighbour Michael O’Mahony said: “He was as a great husband, father and brother, a great neighbour, successful businessman, a cyclist and greyhound owner.”

A keen cyclist who had completed the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle several times, Mr O’Leary was a member of Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club and Rathmore GAA Club, both of which provided a guard of honour at the funeral.

During the funeral Mass, Fr O’Donnell noted how the Epiphany was an appropriate backdrop. “Like the Magi Garry knew all about journey – it was how he spent his life,” said Fr Pat. The parish priest added: “There are certain professions which lend themselves to an almost confessional nature. People on the journey have time and in people like Garry have a listening ear. Yes, Garry (or Denis!) I’m sure often times heard of joyful achievements, hopeful dreams, and yes too of heartbreak and broken promises.”

Fr Pat added: “Garry was often late but not because he had forgotten but because he added those little touches of decency, like linking the elderly to the door, listening to the other person’s story, and above all watching for the young. He was like a guardian angel.”

Mr O’Leary is survived by his wife Antoinette, children Laura, Alan and Eoghan, extended family and wide circle of friends.

Expand your horizons as Killarney Community College hosts careers fair ARM yourself with information by attending Killarney Community College’s careers fair on Wednesday next, January 18.

The fair, from 5.30pm-8pm, offers a prime opportunity to students to gather information from Irish universities, Institutes of Technology, Post-Leaving Cert (PLC) colleges and employers, Local and National.

“This will enable them, with their parents, to make informed choices regarding their College Courses and post school opportunities,” said principal Stella Loughnane.

Staff members from University College Cork, University of Limerick, NUI Galway, Institutes of Technology Tralee, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, Kerry College of Further Education, St. John’s Central College, Killarney Community College, Mallow College and North Kerry College of Further Education are among the education institutes who will be attending.

Liebherr Container Cranes will host a stand focusing on careers and O’Carroll Engineering will be on hand to talk about its apprenticeship programmes.

An Garda Siochána will also present a stand and will be on hand to explain its recruitment process.

Killarney Credit Union and Bank of Ireland will advise on the financial supports they offer to students, sensible savings plans and the value of forward planning.

“The careers fair is open to everybody in the Killarney catchment area, so if you are a Leaving Cert student or parent and are still unsure about CAO choices this fair is an opportunity to come and talk to the experts from the universities and Institutes of Technology and to firm up possible PLC programmes,” added Stella.

“Fifth year is the time to research post-school opportunities, look around, see which college offers what, become familiar with basic minimum entry requirements, specific subject requirements and costings.”

Community pays tribute to Bernie MacMonagle LARGE crowds attended the funeral just after Christmas of the late Bernie MacMonagle (nee Cusack) of Ardshanavooly, Killarney.

Married to the late photographer Donal MacMonagle (who predeceased his wife in 2001), Bernie was much liked in the community having moved here from her native Limerick in 1972.

Mourners travelled from all over the country to pay their final respects at her requiem Mass. Bernie was much loved in the community but especially in the Conroy Hall and St Mary’s Parish Hall where she played bingo for nearly 40 years.

Bernie’s late husband Donal, was one of Ireland’s leading press photographers from Ireland’s oldest press photo agency set up by Daniel MacMonagle in 1913.

In a moving tribute to his mother, her son Don spokes of how Bernie preferred being in front of the camera rather than behind it and although thousands of photographs of her exist, she had in fact only ever taken one photograph, at a family event at Christmas in 2000. Bernie is survived by her children, Rosaleen, Kathleen, Louise, Don, Mary, Ann, Sean and Edel and her extended family.

Council deputation meets TII on Macroom Bypass A DELEGATION from Kerry County Council met with officials from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in Dublin on Thursday to discuss progress on the provision of the Macroom-Ballyvourney bypass scheme.

The delegation included Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael O’Shea, Chief Executive Moira Murrell, Director of Operations Charlie O’Sullivan and Cllrs Brendan Cronin, Johnny Healy-Rae, Mike Kennelly and Patrick Connor-Scarteen.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Michael O’Shea said the meeting was a very positive and constructive one: “The delegation was arranged to impress upon TII the urgent necessity for the provision of this project which is of enormous importance to Kerry from a tourism, business and economic development point of view.

“The TII indicated that there will be progress on the 22km scheme very shortly and the delegation was very pleased with the commitments received in this regard.”

‘Physical activity can only enhance wellbeing and happiness, so why stop now?’

Putting their best foot forward

DENSE fog lifted just in time to provide ideal conditions for the start of Kerry’s National Operation Transformation Walk Day events on Saturday.

Enthusiastic walkers and runners limbered up at the Muckross Traditional Farms in Killarney National Park to participate in the seventh annual event.

Other walks took place in Listowel and Tralee, with the events in Killarney and Tralee being facilitated by the respective local Parkrun groups.

“Across the county a total of 606 participants took part in the walks/ runs. Record numbers were reached in Killarney parkrun at 147 and 319 at Tralee parkrun, while 140 took part in Listowel,” said Córa Carrigg, co-ordinator with Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership.

She added: “It was fantastic to see so many people of all ages and abilities starting the New Year with a bout of physical activity. Based on the number of smiles witnessed on the day physical activity can only enhance wellbeing and happiness, so why stop now? We have beautiful town parks as well as the National Park in our county which ensures Kerry people have a number of off-road walking routes which are safe and suitable for all the family.”

As a follow-on from the Operation Transformation Walk Day, Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership has linked up with a number of walking/running groups, throughout Kerry. These groups are offering a six-week programme; visit www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie for a list of participating groups and contact their local group for further details.

And the silence is deafening. Locally. Maybe the state of the rhododendron, deer mismanagement and upland burning is accepted. Maybe there is a feeling the least said, the better.

For the sake of tourism. I meet that attitude in other circles in Killarney particularly with regard to late night drunkenness, over-enthusiastic bouncers and horrific assaults. Keep the lid on, is the thinking.

But while you can have late-night drinking anywhere and violence is everywhere there is only one world biosphere reserve national park and it is being choked from the ground up.

Take a drive along the Kenmare Road, the Mill Road, walk the Queen’s Drive and now the Yew woods near Muckross Abbey, and there is a sea of rhododendron marching on the oaks and the beech and everything else.

Thirty years ago Killarney had the distinction of electing the first Green councillor in most of western Europe. There was a small diverse group in the Kerry Greens, before Ireland became diverse, local and not so local and we pulled it off against the odds, a political feat that was never fully appreciated.

The impetus for the Green voice in Killarney came from the national park and the determination to arrest what was a decline even then.

The Lower Lake was in a pitiful state, exclosures were being introduced in the woods to see could anything be done to safeguard their regeneration; there was concern at the

JUST nine of the 42 speed van speeding summonses before Killarney District Court last week resulted in a conviction and fine. And some were reluctant convictions.

Never mind that 40 of the summonses were as the result of detection at one spot, the notorious Faha East 60km zone on the 80km R563, Killarney to Dingle road.

I have been at other courts where other roads involved and the motorists didn’t get the fixed charge notices for these either.

Or the husband and owner of the car didn’t give it to the wife, or the wife hid it in the husband or they sent it back late. Myriad, are the imaginative excuses that are offered to escape the penalty points.

There are judges, though not our own local judge, it has to be said, who are taking out the sledgehammer rather than the gavel and branding people liars for saying they never got the post when it comes to speeding fixed notices.

Our judge has a more nuanced appreciation of the matter – would they have not got the post if it were a prize bond? he asked.

But the books aren’t balancing, he observed, and it is unfair on people who step up to the plate.

And he is right. But dare I say it – when the law is an ass, does this mean we should all be donkeys?

The law is an ass when it comes to speeding fines for a number of reasons, not least because a gal or a guy doing 69km in a 60km zone (that is 5.5 miles) will get the

introduction of engines on the lake, the big water buses and the over commercialisation of the park; as well as the golf course trying to snatch part of the demesne.

We went hacking rhododendron in the backlands; we organised regular clean-ups of the lakeshore with help from the Girl Guides under the late Norma Lougheed and others.

The Greens had a proud record in Killarney. There was widespread cynicism. John O’Donoghue in the Dáil dismissed the Greens as “ the brown rice and sandals brigade” – he omitted the organic wine!

The Greens were outside the metaphorical political pale.

But my, my, how times have changed! The shoe, if not exactly the sandal, is on the other foot now, and brown rice is good for you after all.

Green thinking has gone mainstream. Challenge climate change now (Danny Healy-Rae in the Dáil) and you are seen as daft and a caricature.

But while green thinking has become common currency nationally, and the rest of the world is marching on, the local town which sparked the green movement and the green thinking in this country is consigned to the backwoods.

There is little point giving out about the NPWS where staff numbers have been cut to shreds. To paraphrase that great green phrase: The solution is local, not global.

A local tourism tax would solve much. Let us say a contribution of 50 cent for people who take jaunting car trips in the park, who take boat trips, who sleep in beds and eat in restaurants, take part in charity runs, cycling tours and walking tours, to go directly to the park to finance employing people to manage the woodlands and deer, tackle the ivy and clean up the beauty spots. It should bring in a half a million euro. Oh, and a big contribution too from the tea and craft rooms in Muckross to go towards research and the upkeep of the gardens.

Three penalty points and rising insurance for three years and on conviction five penalty points and costly insurance etc.

The real worry is the unholy alliance between penalty points and the insurance costs. We are already paying the highest insurance in the western world. And in Kerry there is little public transport.

Motorists are the most beleaguered sector in the country, clamped, ticketed, arrested, taxed, penalised at every turn on bad roads.

Get the costs of the insurance down, or at least grade the penalty points so that someone doing a couple of miles over the limit does not get the same punishment as someone blackguarding the thing entirely.

And finally send the notices by registered post! This would make a few bob for our beleaguered post offices.

DANCING AT DAWN

IF MOTORISTS won’t dance to the tune of the speed vans, then dancing is again a craze as it was during the 20s and 30s between the wars.

I was reminded of this at the special screening of the digitally remastered Dawn shortly before Christmas. A wonderful occasion, but apart from the polished acting and moving story line, there were a few scenes which stood out.

One was the graceful set dancing near Ross Castle. No leaping and roaring like wild bullocks, and sweating like the proverbial, which passes for a lot of set dancing these days – this was Killarney dancing, small steps, gentle and graceful. The stuff our mothers talked about.

And the talking – the Killarney accent precise and musical English is heard in all its glory - as well as the curse of the day “Bad cess to you!”

The conventions of the day are there too and number one rule it seems is companionship - which is not as simple as it seems but which includes lots of argument.

The Dawn is a film feat, but it is also social history.

HE winter sun smiled on the recent nuptials of Debra Duggan and Mike O’Sullivan.

Debra, from Lisardboula, Tralee, and Mike, from Rusheen, Castlemaine, first laid eyes on one another in February 2009 at the Firies GAA Club social in The Dromhall Hotel. “My cousin Frances Henderson introduced us and the rest is history,” said Debra. Frances took on maid of honour duties at the couple’s recent nuptials in St Mary’s Church in Dingle where they were married by Fr Brendan Walsh.

Renowned Killarney photographer and videographer Sean Kelly and Richard Kelly captured the big day on camera.

Debra’s parents, Nora and Denis Duggan, and Mike’s father, Jackie O’ Sullivan, helped the couple lead the celebrations at the reception, in the Dingle Skellig Hotel. “Mike’s mother, Mary, who passed away in 2009, was most definitely looking down on us on the day as we were blessed with beautiful weather,” said Debra. “We had a lovely crisp winter’s day which created a great atmosphere. Sunglasses were needed rather than umbrellas.”

The bride’s friends Noreen Casey and Sophie Houlihan were bridesmaids.

The groom’s brother Ger O’Sullivan was best man while Debra’s brother Alan Duggan together with Mike’s friend David Cronin were groomsmen.

Family friend Sophie McNamara travelled from the UK especially to take on flower girl duties and the bride’s cousin and groom’s godson John Henderson enjoyed the key role of pageboy.

At the reception, acclaimed wedding band Truly Diverse ensured the dance floor was the place to be, followed by DJ Andrew Morrissey.

Mike surprised Debra during a holiday in June 2014 in Kusadasi, Turkey, by popping the question. When Debra said yes, she was whisked off to see the final diamonds being added to her engagement ring, which was being made.

The newlyweds will reside in Tralee.

Killarney’s motorsports stars wheel centre stage

Killarney and District Motor Club presented Geraldine McCarthy of the South Kerry branch of Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland with a cheque for €2,000

MOTORING into the spotlight was Killarney and District Motor Club for its recent celebration in the K-Town Bar in Killarney.

Some 150 people gathered for the event during which all the local cups and awards that were won throughout the year were on display, with old club videos and in-car cameras also shown.

There was a standing ovation for Mike Marshall of Muckross Road when the club made a special presentation to him of a Lifetime Dedication Award. “This acknowledged the endless time, commitment and passion for motorsport in the club over the past four decades,” said club PRO Johnny Hickey.

Club chairman Diarmuid Cronin presented the Club Person of the Year award to Martin Farrell, Loreto Road. “Martin was honoured for his outstanding work as the club’s chief marshal and for his dedication in the running of our rallies within the club,” said Johnny. Emma Looney, Kilcummin, received an award acknowledging her service to the club as club secretary for the past five years.

Club competitors were also acknowledged for their achievements throughout the year – Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin as winners if the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship; Charlie and Johnny Hickey as winners of the plasticbags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship; Donal O'Connor, Rathmore, as winner of the Historic category Southern 4 Rally Championship.

A special recognition award was given to motorsport photographer Ray Corkery, Killorglin, for his continued support.

Also acknowledged on the night were father and son Pat and Denis Walsh, Mastergeeha, and Billy Ant McCarthy, Gneeveguilla, for their service and help as marshals throughout the year.

Club chairman Diarmuid Cronin spoke of the club’s strength, with members competing in the Irish, British, European and World Championships.

He also paid tribute to Paul Nagle, Robert Duggan, Ger Conway and Noel O'Sullivan's success. "Next year it looks very promising as we will have at least four members of the club competing in rounds of the World Rally Championship,” said Diarmuid.

The club also presented Geraldine McCarthy of the South Kerry Branch of Multiple Sclerosis with a €2000 donation on the night.

The organisers of the night Diarmuid Lynch and Johnny Hickey thanked the management and staff of K-Town Bar for hosting the event.

Magical night for The Malton’s Martina SCREEN stars were out in force for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards early this week, but Monday night in Killarney saw people who play a starring role in the hospitality industry step into the spotlight.

All eyes were on the prize for The Malton Hotel team as it hosted its annual staff awards ceremony at its sister business the Killarney Royal Hotel.

And one particular lady shone on the night, with popular staff member Martina O’Leary receiving the Overall Employee of the Year award from Joe Scally, proprietor, The Malton Hotel, Stephen Quinlan, chairperson of hotel’s social committee, and Sinead Marron, deputy general manager.

Michael Hussey, meanwhile, was honoured with the Staff Manager of

the Year prize, and Eileen O'Connor received the Self-Catering Staff Person of the Year award.

Adam Mackowiak was presented with the Guest Services Staff Person of the Year award, while Przemyslaw Firek (Firo) received the Leisure Centre Staff Person of the Year award.

The gong for Restaurant Staff Person of the Year went to Estera Cernianskaite, while Serena O'Brien received the Kitchen Person of the Year award, Kieran Belshaw was presented with the award for staff night porter and Jasmin Khanom received the Accommodation Staff Person of the Year award.

Water funding I WELCOME the announcement by Irish Water that it will invest €900,000 for the replacement of water mains from Glencuttane to Ardmoniel Killorglin, which is approximately 7.25 km long.

I also welcome the announcement that Irish Water has selected Castleisland as a location for one of its 11 Capital Offices in the country. This is very important for to secure further investment for water pipes in County Kerry along with bringing more much needed jobs to the region.

JOHN 1:29-34: John is one who directs people to Jesus as the one who had a life-giving message for them. Who have been the people in your life whose example or advice pointed you in the direction of a fuller life? Who has helped you to appreciate the importance of Jesus and his message?

In the narrative, John recognised that Jesus had more to offer people than he himself. He had the humility not to need to be the star of the show.

Whom have you known with that grounded sense of their own place?

John proclaims Jesus as one who takes away the sin of the world. Who have been the people who, for you, continued this mission of Jesus and led you from sin and guilt to forgiveness and freedom? For whom have you done this?

It was not just on the cross that Jesus gave his life as the Lamb of God. His public ministry was a constant struggle against injustice and oppression.

When have you shared in this mission of Jesus? Who have been models of this for you?

LAMB of God: Say a prayer today for the Church in Syria which is being decimated by five years of war. It was the Syrian Church in the seventh century that gave us the prayer Lamb of God which we recite three times at Sunday Mass. A timely prayer for mercy and peace to prevail in face of the pervasive warring “sin of the world”.

Not the Lamb, “meek and mild” of Blake’s poem of Innocence, in Mass this weekend, but the ‘Lamb who was slain’, mentioned 30 times in the Apocalypse, and identified by Philip in Acts 8 as the Suffering Servant for the benefit of the open minded and enquiring Ethiopian.

John the Baptist was the first to say Jesus is the Lamb of God, the first to say in a universalist way that Christ would take away not only Israel’s sin but the sin of the whole world. His weapons are mercy and peace. Spread them widely.

IT’S HARD to know what, or who, to believe any more. During the recent US presidential race, “fact checking” became something of a buzzword.

After each of the major debates, newspapers and news sites churned out articles investigating the validity of the candidates’ claims. Research was rapidly carried out, sources were checked, and statements from the past were dragged up to prove or disprove many a point.

With the Internet making it possible to “fact-check” in mere minutes, it is so easy to be caught out. Those in public life have to be more careful than ever that they are speaking the truth, that they are not contradicting what they have said previously, and that they can back up their statements with authoritative evidence.

John the Baptist may not have been subject to such rigorous “fact checking”, but he was at pains to explain the source of his authority: “I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven…I have seen and I am the witness.” John knew that people might not immediately take him seriously, so twice he emphasised that he did not know Jesus himself.

He was not out to trick or mislead people. We can believe what this first witness says about who Jesus is, because his words come directly from God.

Chic ladies conclude the festive season in style in Killarney A STROLL around the town on January 6 showed that Women’s Christmas or Nollaig na mBan is an extremely popular date on the calendars of ladies throughout Killarney.

Venues were very busy, with revellers seeing out the festive season in style in the Killarney Grand Hotel’s Liquid Lounge.

INGREDIENTS 1 deboned lamb shoulder 2 sprigs of fresh thyme 1 sprig of fresh rosemary 1 sprig of fresh flat parsley 1-2 cloves garlic 1 fresh bay leaf 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp sea salt flakes 2 medium onions 2 medium carrots 3 sticks of celery 1 tbsp tomato puree 2 cloves of garlic 4 sprigs of fresh thyme 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 1 cup red wine 1 litre chicken stock METHOD Finely chop herbs, garlic, bay leaf and mix with sea salt and olive oil.

Massage mix over lamb and tie with string.

Preheat oven to 250 degrees C, place shoulder in roasting tray and cook for 15 minutes. Turn over and add chopped veg. When golden add tomato puree and herbs, pour in the red wine and chicken stock and turn heat down to 125 degrees C. Turn every 30-45 minutes. It takes three to four and a half hours to braise.

Remove string, cover with tinfoil and a tea towel and rest for 10 minutes.

Strain liquid and reduce slightly. Place 4 the on a warm serving dish and pour hot sauce over it.

It’s a good idea to look to the past as well as the future, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

WE ALL seem to be striving to re-invent ourselves and what better time to do it than at the beginning of a new year?

I would like to ask you to look at things differently, even if just for a moment. Instead of picturing yourself as a brand new, changed 'you', trying looking back at the child you once were. Children are constantly in a creative state of mind as everything they do is a new creation. I think that it could do us adults the world of good to try to see the world through the eyes of a child.

When I learned songs as a child I don't remember feeling like it was a chore. I actually don't really remember ever learning songs, I just knew them! I think this may have been because my mind was so open to everything.

When I painted a picture I didn't see it as a mindful activity, I just did it! Maybe we all need to take time from our busy lives to create, like a child would. Try something new, something that may not even benefit your

everyday life in any practical sense.

Try not to do it for any other reason than the fact that you've never done it before. If, as a result, you make your life better, then that is a great bonus.

I asked my fiancé to buy me a whistle for Christmas. Now, this may seem like an obvious thing for a musician to do but I have actually never formally learned an instrument before. I tried piano lessons when I was a teenager but I gave up because I was used to being able to progress quickly and I hated not being instantly good at something. Singing came naturally to me, that does not mean that playing an instrument will! In fact, it is quite daunting for me to make ugly sounds as that is something I have always struggled with. I am impatient with imperfection and I can be very hard on myself.

The child version of me would know better. “Child me” would pick up the whistle and start from scratch with no major expectations. Try being a child again!

The Provocateur NO MORE BLUE MONDAYS EXPERTS have been swift to tell us this week to harness positive thinking to get through a month traditionally not associated with a sunny outlook, in every sense of the phrase.

Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) reported to be the most depressing day of the year for countries in the Northern Hemisphere.

The concept was first publicised as part of a 2005 press release from holiday company Sky Travel, which claimed to have calculated the date using an equation.

Fair enough, Blue Monday is nothing but a marketing gimmick, but surely such concepts are quite damaging. It’s not all that helpful for anyone, no matter how optimistic, to wake up with the expectation that everyone’s Monday will be a “blue” one.

Instead, it’s a better idea to take control of banishing ideas of “doom and gloom” and turn our attitude around. Physical exercise is another way of feeling your best.

In the Irish Independent this week, motivational speaker Ewa Pietrzak offered simple but effective advice to ensure you see the lass as always half full.

“Being in the presence of upbeat people can shift us from seeing the glass half empty, to the glass half full,” she said.

“Every day can be a challenge if we let it, but the key to staying positive is to surround ourselves with optimistic people and engage in uplifting conversation.’’

She also advised the practise of gratitude.

“Learn to appreciate life and be thankful for everything you have today. Life is the greatest gift and most of us take it for granted,” she said.

Indeed, homelessness comes with many other burdens not least being the isolation and the sense of not belonging anywhere or to anyone. Maybe the homeless begin to believe that being unhappy is their permanent condition.

A loyalty to unhappiness is something everyone feels now and again; how much more can the feeling be if you have no one or nowhere to call your own? Homelessness gives death a time to live and its victims a time to die. Homelessness is not a choice but is often associated with the weaker, more vulnerable and more marginalised members of our society. Perhaps, shamefully, we have come to accept that. Now they find they are governed by bad laws, the worst sort of tyranny, legally bound to Vulture Funds which are out to destroy them. These pirates can come in and buy up bank loan books at massive discounts and then set about to make a tax-free profit on their ill-gotten gains. You couldn’t make this up.

It is the first time that the tourist trade from all part of the county will be represented at the nine-day show and its part of the new aggressive marketing approach by the Destination Kerry Tourism Forum and Kerry County Council to attract even greater numbers of European visitors to the county. The travel fair is expected to attract 300,000 visitors.

Why didn’t the government step in and force the banks to give these discounts to the renters and the mortgage holders thus making it easier and cheaper for them to pay off the loans, mortgages or whatever. Can you imagine the difference it would make to rent-paying tenants if they were told they could take over the mortgage on the property at a discount in excess of 40%? They would literally be laughing all the way to the bank. Or if a mortgage holder was told the capital owed was now less than half of the original sum how he, too, would laugh?

No, instead billions of euro worth of loans and mortgages were sold to foreign vulture funds at knockdown prices driving them to dispose of these properties ruthlessly, efficiently and mercilessly throwing people out on the street to gain vacant possession and a more saleable property. In the past we knew how to deal with these black and merciless entities who drove the huge numbers of repossessions in the aftermath of the famine. The Irish Land League knew how to deal with the likes of Captain Boycott. Who would have thought that over a hundred years later the Irish would still be fighting for fair rent, fixity of tenure, and free sale in their own country?

Airport has proved to be a major success for Kerry tourism and there will be additional direct flights from Germany to Shannon and Dublin during 2017.

Kerry Airport is currently pursuing new direct routes from Northern Germany to Kerry for 2018. The Destination Kerry stand will be part of the large Tourism Ireland display and be located next to the Star Wars exhibit which should attract a lot of interest. Tourism trade representatives from Killarney, Tralee, Dingle, Kenmare, Ballybunion, Castleisland, Ring of Kerry, North Kerry, Skelligs Coast, Valentia, and Kerry Airport will all be participating at different stages.

Joan McCarthy, Head of Tourism Development, Kerry County Council, said: “Forty-six per cent of all German visitors visit the South-West and Kerry is their preferred regional holiday destination. Kerry County Council recently hosted a visit by TUI, Germany’s largest tour operator, which is seeking to expand its Irish business.”

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD RHODODENDRON UPSETS THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM The spread of rhododendron is a significant problem that requires significant resources to solve, says Trevor O’Donoghue AT THE end of 2016 the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) called for Killarney National Park’s designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve to be withdrawn. This call was backed up by the leader of the Green Party, Eamon Ryan. Both IWT and the Green Party cite mismanagement of the park, overgrazing by deer and the threat that invasive species including rhododendron poses to the national park as being key concerns.

Killarney National Park is without a doubt the jewel in the crown of tourism in Kerry, perhaps even tourism in Ireland and is known worldwide for its unique and precious habitats and species. Extensive, mature oak woodlands, yew forests, large stands of holly and the lakes play host to our red deer, wild trout and salmon, biologically significant populations of arbutus, and the Killarney fern and Killarney shad.

Rhododendron ponticum on the other hand is a nasty, insidious plant, boasting pretty flowers and shiny leaves much beloved by the Victorians. Since its arrival in Killarney, it has spread throughout the park. Its thick growth creates a dense canopy of leaves that can stop other plants from growing and stops these plants and associated animals from thriving, upsetting the natural ecosystem.

Hard work by the staff and volunteers at Killarney National Park can only do so much.

problem that requires significant resources to tackle it. A trip through the park will show the extent of the problem. Our woodlands are being taken over and unless a serious effort is made to tackle the problem, our national park is under threat. With tourism accounting for a significant portion of the economy of Kerry and particularly Killarney, it behoves us to take better care of this unique resource that has been at the heart of our town and tourism industry for years.

Perhaps this call by the IWT will serve as a wake up call for the powers that be and funding can be found to tackle this problem.

In the meantime, maybe some of our politicians might sit up and take note. It would be some vote getter and a great legacy to boot, to be the man or woman who sorted out these problems and helped save Killarney National Park.

SINCE popular Headford woman Maureen Kelliher was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February of last year, her life changed utterly.

Now her friends and the community have joined forces to form the Friends of Maureen Kelliher to help raise funds for Maureen. “We want to raise funds to cover unforeseen costs and to help take the pressure off,” said Maureen’s friend Ann Courtney.

Maureen, who has always been an active member of the community, is unable walk without any support and uses a walking aid to go about her everyday life.

“What most would take for granted like simply being able to sit in a car or do the shopping, is a struggle Maureen strives to overcome,” said Ann. Having ignored her symptoms for such a long time, Maureen said she wishes she had contacted her doctor sooner.

Eager to start 2017 on a positive note, Maureen paid tribute to her friends, family and community for their support, as well as the community, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Health Service Executive.

The mum of four is a founding member of Glenflesk Ladies GAA and is also a long-time member of Killarney Celtic FC as well as a supporter of Killarney Athletic FC. Ted Moynihan is Kerry Person of the Year DEDICATED Kerry Hospice Foundation campaigner Ted Moynihan has been selected as Kerry Person of the Year for 2017.

Mr Moynihan is a dedicated campaigner and tireless fundraiser for the foundation which supports a wide range of palliative care services to patients in Kerry, dealing with serious illness.

Mr Moynihan, a native of Blennerville, was instrumental in organising the first ever fund-raiser for the Kerry Hospice with a 150mile walk along the Kerry way on the Iveragh Peninsula in 1990. Through his fundraising efforts, a palliative care facility was opened in 2007 and recently in 2016, the sod has been turned on a new palliative care in-patient unit in the daycare centre in Tralee which will consist of 15 beds, costing €6.2 million.

At the beginning of the New Year, everyone is full of good intentions, says Debby Looney

MY INTENTION for 2017 is to eat more vegetables, and preferably the homegrown variety. While it is still too cold to do much planting, it is a great time to plan out your veggie plot. I think the first conundrum we all face is: Size.

For a family of four, 200 square meters is plenty. For salad greens and shallots, 10 square meters is enough.

Our next quandary is: Which veg?

Take the time to research. Last year I grew “asparagus peas”, or, Tetragonolobus pupurea, and they were a delight. The flowers are red and very pretty, even in a flower border, and the peas themselves have a slight asparagus taste. Kohl rabi is another favourite, not very well known, but bursting with vitamins and minerals. A member of the cabbage family, when eaten grated and raw in a salad it crunches like an apple, and for those who don’t love cabbage, they are a superb alternative.

When sowing seeds we face the next problem: Quantity. Now is

when you have the time to calculate how many plants you will need, for example, if you eat beetroot every day you will need 365 plants, but, if you’re honest about it, and beetroot is but a New Year’s resolution, you may need significantly less!

Quite a few gardeners have emailed me wondering when the best time is for cutting back raspberry canes. Autumn-fruiting plants may be pruned back to ground level in February, They flower and fruit on the one years’ growth. Summer fruiting plants produce fruit on the previous years’ growth, so the canes from which you harvest should be the ones cut back immediately after harvesting. Keep around six of the strongest new shoots and cut the others back to ground level.

In February you may want to cut the canes you have kept back to about four feet.

So, fellow gardeners, sit back, relax, peruse some seed catalogues, hard work is just around the corner!

On target for the Maye Breen Cup THE Maye Breen Cup final and semi-finals were played on Monday in Murphy’s Bar. In the first semi-final Maureen and Gery McCormick beat Danielle and her father Danny Looney.

In the second semi-final Laura Keane and Paraic O’Mahony beat Helen O’Neill and Dale McCarthy in a cracking game to set up a final with the McCormicks.

In the final Paraic and Laura, after a struggle, got the better of 1990 winner Maureen and Gery to win the Maye Breen Cup for the first time.

“Congratulations to all players for a great night and thanks to everybody for taking part in this year’s Maye Breen competition,” said Sean Murphy of Murphy’s Bar.

OVER 10,000 PIECES OF SCRAP METAL WERE METICULOUSLY CHOSEN TO RE-CREATE THIS 1955 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SLR

1955 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SLR CREATED OUT OF SCRAP METAL IN 1955, the Mercedes-Benz built two coupé versions of the 300 SLR racing car, winning that year's World Sportscar Championship before a catastrophic crash and fire at Le Mans ended its domination prematurely.

Unfortunately these super cars of the time never found their way into any customers’ hands.

Mercedes cancelled its racing program after the Le Mans disaster and the project was shelved.

Many of the legendary works ‘Silver Arrow’ racing cars of the time were never sold to the public.

Company design chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut, architect of the 300 SLR racer appropriated one of the leftover mules as his personal driver. The

coupé was far and away the fastest road car in the world in its day. Uhlenhaut was allowed to drive it when travelling on business – and he made extensive use of this privilege. Legend has it that Uhlenhaut, late for a meeting in Munich (2 ½ hours from Stuttgart by car today), climbed aboard the 300SLR and arrived at his destination an hour later. Retired employees recall that when their boss occasionally drove the SLR home, they could hear him returning the next morning when still 5km away. It’s no wonder he needed a hearing aid in later life. The car became known as the “Uhlenhaut Coupé”.

Now, three German friends decided to recreate

one of the greatest car ever scrapped by Mercedes – and they decided to build it out of scrap.

In order to pay their respects to the 300 SLR, the group called Giganten aus Stahl (Giants of Steel), meticulously chose over ten-thousand pieces of metal for the sculpture.

It took them took seven months to perfect using more than 10,000 pieces of metal.

It is believed that if either of the models were sold today, they would pull in bids in the tens of millions and easily become the most expensive car in history. As for the scrap metal MercedesBenz 300 SL sculpture, it was valued for a mere €70,000 after completion.

Heavy diesel vehicle NOx emissions less than diesel cars

MODERN diesel cars emit more exhaust emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) in real-world running than do heavy diesel trucks, according to a study released recently by the International Council on Clean Transportation. The report comes in the wake of the #dieselgate scandal that engulfed Volkswagen last year, and revealed systematic cheating on emissions in the US. The ICCT report does not discuss pollution per se, just the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

The ICCT study states the “crux of the debate is that under normal operation many of these vehicles [diesel passenger cars] far exceed the limits imposed by regulation and certified by official type approval tests”. In Europe, diesel cars are under Euro VI guidelines while trucks only have to meet Euro IV guidelines. However, diesel trucks, according to the ICCT, don’t emit more NOx than their certification states because

of different testing methods.

Indeed, the report reveals that trucks in Europe emit around 210mg/km of NOx which is less than half of the 480-560mg/km of NOx some diesel cars have been measured as emitting under independent, real-world testing by the German government. The Euro VI emissions guidelines call for passenger cars to emit 80mg/km of NOx. In Europe, diesel trucks are measured via mobile devices while on the road which meant that there was nowhere to hide and manufacturers had to produce cleaner diesel trucks.

Which they did. Not so for diesel cars which are measured in a lab.

There is a new test being introduced this year in Europe called the Real Driving Emissions test protocol for light vehicles. This test will supplement the improved lab-based test also being phased in this year and will be mandated for

all new vehicle registrations in September 2019.

The RDE test will measure vehicle emissions during on-road driving within defined boundary conditions.

What does all this mean? Basically, that the testing of light diesel vehicles will now fall into line with that of heavy diesel vehicles with PEMS testing in the real world to ensure NOx emissions meet mandated guidelines. However, some of the issues relating packaging of diesel passenger cars and how that affects the pollution gear fitted to reduce NOx will mean that further development is required by the car companies and could mean that the price of diesel cars increase slightly. A small price to pay for cleaner cars, though, especially when you consider the many thousands of people who die each year related to air pollution caused by diesel cars.

Killarney Credit Union highlights its personal car loan plans THIS year is set to be a bumper one for car sales, with 45% of Irish consumers intending on buying. It is also the year when a number of first round Personal Contract Plans (PCPs) are ending.

Many will simply opt to roll-on their existing PCPs to finance the purchase of a new car, noted Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer, Killarney Credit Union.

“Headline rates on some car finance deals such as PCPs can easily distract from a range of additional charges, and a great deal of inflexibility,” said Helen. “With a personal car loan from Killarney Credit Union, you own the car from the outset. If you run into difficulty, you can talk to us about adjusting

the repayment schedule and if you are in the happy position of being able to repay the loan early, you can do so without any complications or rescheduling fees."

Helen added: “In addition, you need to be conscious of the mileage you are racking up on the car, because the balloon payment, or guaranteed minimum future value (GMFV), of the car will have been calculated with your annual mileage in mind. Crucially, with a PCP you are also restricted with what you do while you are still ‘hiring’ the car.

Rugby news & views ANOTHER action-packed weekend full of rugby has just gone by. European rugby as well as local rugby were the order of the day as the new year kicked off in earnest. Munster were on the emotional rollercoaster as they travelled back to Paris to take on Racing Metro in the postponed match from last October.

The Red Army made an emotional return to the Paris suburbs and to the Stade Yves de Manoir in Colombes. Last October, Munster players and fans alike received the shocking news that our head coach had passed away in Paris. The return trip was always going to be a tough on the lads. With stories from the travelling fans about how the Racing fans were opening their homes to the reds, something special was on the cards. However, watching the match, I noticed how much the lads kept their emotions in check. A truly stunning performance ensued with Simon Zebo, CJ Stander, Andrew Conway and Niall Scannell crossing for tries. Every single player stepped up but for me Donncha Ryan was the man of the match, a fearless warrior who enjoyed the sing-along with the fans after the whistle blew. Another amaz-

ing memory from Munster this season. Axel would have been so proud of his charges! A special bond now exists between these two clubs and it will be truly amazing to witness the visit of the Parisians to Thomond Park in a few weeks.

Closer to home, we had four squads in action over the weekend with the U14s, U16s and Senior winning vital matches. Our U18s were extremely unlucky not to win their match against a combined Castleisland/Abbeyfeale and can feel rightly hard done by with two very questionable disallowed tries!

Our Seniors made the short trip to Listry to take on Killorglin in the semi-final of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. A cracking game ensued, with the home side and visitors going toe to toe for the whole match, trading tries and a fantastic drive from the pack getting Colin O’Sullivan in for the match winner. Well done to the Ger Moynihan and his charges, who now face Fethard in the final, scheduled for the end of February.

Brian Spillane’s charges are 40/1 outsiders to go all the way, while Newmarket are available at the relatively short price of 14/1. (Reigning champions Sheriff YC of Dublin are favourites at 5/2.)

Nevertheless, Celtic will make the journey up to Clare rightly believing they have a real chance of causing an upset. They’ll need big performances from one to eleven but centre half Jamie Spillane, who was excellent against Mervue, will have an especially key role as he and his fellow defenders look to contain the free-scoring Newmarket strike force, while in the crucial midfield area Gary Keane, Pa McGrath and Matt Keane will hope to gain a foothold in the match. If they can get on top and feed the likes of Wayne Sparling, who has the pace and skill to cause any team real problems, they’ll be in with a fighting chance.

1 - Brendan Kealy I played with Brendan in the Sem. He was always No. 1 coming up through those years. He went on to play two years minor and three or four years Kerry U-21, and of course everyone knows what he achieved with the seniors. He was also a top class soccer keeper – if the football didn’t work out he could have probably went abroad.

2 - John Payne Probably the most underrated corner back in the county. He’s been corner back for the Crokes for ten years or so and he’s had a lot of tough defeats but he also has five County Championships. I don’t know how he didn’t get a better look in with Kerry – but that’s how high I rate Payno.

3 - Luke Quinn

4 - Kieran Cahillane

Luke is a born leader. He’s very vocal on the pitch and he’s a County Championship-winning captain. His speed as well is totally deceptive. You’d think for a guy with his build that he’d be a bit on the slower side but he’s exceptionally quick and exceptionally strong.

Kieran was exceptional. He was a frightening all-round sportsperson. He could have played cricket and he would have been good at it. Unfortunately he passed away in his younger years but before he passed he was just making his mark in with the Crokes seniors.

5 - Eanna Kavanagh

6 - Eoin Brosnan

7 - Karl Foley

Eanna is probably one of the most skilful players I’ve ever played with. Growing up he would have been the same age group as Gooch and Ambrose O’Donovan and they would have been the three main players in that team. He was a Kerry minor and U-21 and was unlucky not to get more of look-in with Kerry.

Eoin is an absolute warrior on the pitch. The best game I’ve ever seen him play he nearly got concussed a few minutes in against Limerick and he came back out with a bandage strapped around his head. I think he was marking John Galvin that day who is a fantastic footballer and Eoin was just phenomenal for the whole game.

I really liked playing with Karl in the Sem and with East Kerry. He was very skilful in a couple of different codes and he brought that with him onto the GAA pitch. He was so tough and another player who was a bit underrated. He wouldn’t have been out of place in a Kerry minor squad in those years.

8 - Johnny O’Sullivan

9 - David Moloney

Johnny is gone from Ireland with a good few years but before that he obviously played a lot with the Crokes. Woo had hands like shovels. He’d pull anything out of the sky. He’s not in my midfield for his footballing ability but as a goalkeeper myself he was a good go-to guy if you needed someone to win a ball.

He’s probably the most versatile player on my team.

He’s an U-21 All-Ireland-winning goalkeeper, he’s won County Championships in midfield for the Crokes and he’s been thrown into full forward on numerous occasions. Until injury took him for a few years he could have played anywhere and excelled no problem.

10 - Brian Looney

11 - Jimmy Falvey

12 - Johnny Buckley

Brian in my eyes is Mr Dr Crokes.

The last ten or twelve years he’s constantly been there and he’s a County Championship-winning captain as well. If a defender beats him to a ball you can be sure that he’s going to skin that defender three or four times in the next few plays. When he gets the ball in his hands he’ll turn any man and leave him for dead.

I would have wanted to go into any sport playing with Jimmy Falvey. It didn’t matter where you were playing, it could have been a challenge game or a training game below in the Sem, and Jimmy was giving 110%. He was a bit of a Roy Keane; very aggressive and if you made a mistake he was going to let you know about it.

There isn’t too many midfielders in the country that you could say have the skill level of Johnny Buckley. He’s a very big, strong lad, very good in the air, he can kick points and he’ll work back for you.

I put him at wing forward because that seems to be where he’s shining with Kerry. He can also drop back into that deeper role and help his midfield.

14 - Diarmuid O’Carroll

15 - Kieran O’Leary

There’s no point saying too much about Gooch. In our generation we’re not gonna see much better than him. People talk about Diarmuid Connolly and Brogan but in my eyes there’s no one that has the vision, the skill, the athleticism that this guy has. How he’s never won Player of the Year is beyond me.

He went on to play professional soccer with Glasgow Celtic but before that he was a big player for the Crokes and the Sem. Diarmuid could have played anywhere, he was just a fierce athletic guy and very skilful, tall, good in the air, and if he stuck around and didn’t make it as a professional soccer player would have been a minor and U-21.

SUBS: 16 - Kieran Cremin There are two keepers I would have looked up to growing up. Peter O’Brien is one, although I never got to play with Peter, and Kieran Cremin was the other. He was a fantastic goalkeeper and he was in with Kerry for a number of years.

17 - David Murphy David was an exceptional footballer. He was a good guy as well as a good footballer (Adam: Are we talking about the same David Murphy?].

He would have played with Leary and Brian Looney at Kerry minor level and he was a big, big talent. He was always top notch for the Sem. 18 - Ambrose O’Donovan Ambrose is an exceptional club player and probably unlucky intercounty-wise. If you look at the last ten years or so you’ll hardly get a more consistent midfielder than Ambrose. He’s been there year in, year out. He’s come up against great players like Bryan Sheehan and Maurice Fitzgerald and taken it in his stride.

19 - Fionn Fitzgerald He’s a joint All-Ireland-winning captain and he was one of my sticky ones, I had him in my starting team once or twice but in the end I went with who I played with more. Fionn is definitely one of the best footballers I’ve played with.

20 - Jamie Doolan It goes to show the strength in depth that’s there at the moment when a guy like Jamie doesn’t play week in, week out. He’s two years younger than me but he came into our minor team when he was U-16 and straight

People underrated Kieran for a long time but you have to look at what he was up against, the likes of Mike Frank, Colm Cooper, Star, Tommy Walsh… If he was playing for any other county, including Dublin, Kieran would have started every championship game. I hold him in that high a regard. away you could tell that he was gonna be top class. In the last couple of years injuries have probably set him back a bit but he’s still a very important player .

Bainisteoir - John Galvin John probably doesn’t get a lot of the credit he deserves. A lot of the guys who have been the backbone of the Crokes for the last seven or eight years would have been coached by John for the bones of four or five years between minor and U-21 and he probably set the benchmark for us when it came to stepping up the ranks.

In conversation with Patrick O’Sullivan Eamonn Fitzgerald talks to Patrick O’Sullivan who retired from the Kerry County GAA Board recently OF HIS 19 years’ service with Kerry County Board, Patrick O’Sullivan spent 10 as county development officer and 5 as county chairman. Earlier this week he had surgery done on a troublesome ankle injury in Ray Moran’s Santry Sports Clinic. I met up with Patrick before he left Killarney for surgery.

Born in New York in 1967 he will be celebrating his 50th birthday later this year. He lived in the Big Apple until he was eight years old and moved to Killarney when his parents, Eddie and Bridie, bought the Tatler Jack pub in Plunkett Street and set up a thriving business. His early boyhood memories were of the Sunday visits to Gaelic Park in the Bronx. His dad was in charge of the Carlow team in New York, which drew its players mainly from counties Kerry, Carlow and Cavan. His education in Killarney was in The Mon, St Oliver’s Ballycasheen, St Brendan’s College and Pallaskenry College in Limerick.

Among his classmates in the Mon his best buddy was Colm O’Shea, who encouraged him to join the Dr Crokes club and attend the Saturday morning football coaching lessons. In his mid-20s he became involved in the coaching and he took charge of the under-14, U 15, U 16 and the Crokes minor team. At one stage his knee was in plaster of Paris, but that did not deter him from his roles as team manager. His most treasured medals won as a player were two minor county leagues and the under-21 county championship won in 1986, centenary year of Dr Crokes. He was a very competent goalkeeper in those campaigns.

“THE CROKES CLUB MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME,” HE SAID. He acted as a very popular chairman and helped raise significant funds in sponsorship along with Der Brosnan.

With this money the club was able to develop the stand, lighting up to the standard of match play and the terracing in the Bridgefield side of the grounds. “Those were great years and I got great satisfaction leading Crokes developing its facilities in Lewis Road to such a high standard as it is today,” he said.

COUNTY BOARD His first connection with the Kerry county board came in 1997. “Sean Kelly asked me to help out in fund raising for the county board. Along with Tom Prendergast, Seamus Mac Gearailt, Terry Dunne from Tralee and Pat O’Connor from Na Gaeil, we organised a massive golf classic which brought in £ 24,000 and that was pounds at the time, so it really swelled the board’s coffers.

“So many officers of the county board encouraged me to run for office in the board. These included Sean Walsh, Mike Larkin McCarthy, Eamonn O’Sullivan and Tony O’Keeffe. I was elected county development officer and I spent 10 years in that role. I travelled all over the county advising clubs on how to go about getting grants to purchase club grounds and then how to develop the requisite facilities. This was very rewarding work as I got to know so many people throughout the county.

Minister John O’Donoghue was also very helpful to the clubs by securing National Lottery funds.”

He then spent five years as vice-chairman before taking over the top spot in the county Board. He was chairman for the past five years and had to retire from office before Christmas because of the five-year ruling to stay in office.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE I asked him for his thoughts now after five years in the chair. “It was very satisfying to see the clubs develop their facilities, but it became very obvious to Sean Walsh and myself of the need to develop a Centre of Excellence to train and develop the county teams. It was very hard to get pitches during the winter and early spring because clubs had put so much money into their own pitches that they wanted to close them during the bad weather to recover again for the club playing season. I had this vision of a Centre of Excellence to cater for all and it took off from there. It was going to be very costly to deliver to the highest specification, but that did not stop me pursuing this dream. We raised money locally for the centre at Currans and raised considerable funds among the GAA and particularly the Kerry diaspora. As expected we had hugely

successful fundraisers particularly in the USA and in England. It took a tremendous amount of co-ordination but I had some great contacts abroad and this proved to be the way in to raise the funds. The buildings have been roofed and the pitches are coming along nicely. All will be ready for the opening in March of this year. It is a dream come true and a great sense of satisfaction.”

HIGHLIGHT Another highlight during his term as chairman was to see Kerry winning the 2014 All-Ireland senior title. “I had the right man in charge in Eamonn Fitzmaurice and if you have the best people in charge you will succeed,” he said. “Jack O’Connor and Peter Keane also delivered with All Ireland minor titles after a famine in this age group for so many years.”

But can we beat the Dubs at senior level; they appear to be untouchable at present? “We have won the minors three years in a row and over the next few years some of these excellent players will make the breakthrough at senior level to take the place of those seniors who are retiring and who served the county so well over so many years. We were very close to defeating the Dubs in these past two years and if you look back on the videos you will see that we got no favours from the referees. Some vital refereeing decisions went against us and there was only a kick of the ball between us in the final analysis. That is not sour grapes over Dublin winning. I am also very proud of the steady successes of the county hurlers made, especially under manager Ciarán Carey.”

The role of chairman was fulltime work, even if it was done on a voluntary basis.

“I enjoyed it and it would not have been possible only for the support in particular of my family,” he said.

“My wife Frances encouraged me all the way along with my children TJ, Zoe and Laura. Frances is very involved at club level with the Crokes. She is the club registrar and is kept very busy working with the hugely successful Events committee and the various roles they play in the club. Frances is a mighty woman to work. I must also thank my mother and father, Bridie and Eddie, as well as my siblings and close friends, who kept my own business (the Tatler Jack Bar) going when I was away doing county board work.”

I asked him how life has changed since he left office in December. “The big thing is that the phone is more silent.

I was constantly on the phone while I was chairman. I will adapt to a more normal life and look forward to getting back in with the Crokes in whatever capacity they want me to work. I will be fully supporting Sean Walsh in his bid to become Uachtarán of the GAA.” RELAX How does he relax? “I have made some great friends through the GAA in so many different places and ways and I value their friendships. We have had some great times together. I love listening to U2 and love to cycle. That will be an important part of my rehabilitation as I recover from the ankle surgery. That will mean 20 weeks in the rehab boot. I should mention of course Ger Harte and Colm Fuller who were so helpful after my previous surgery.”

Patrick, if there was a free transfer if the GAA what 2 players would you buy for Kerry? Without hesitation he mentioned Lee Keegan of Mayo and Diarmuid Connolly of Dublin and his outstanding Kerry players of the past 40 years.

“There were so many great players in the different eras. Look at the likes of Mikey Sheehy, John Egan, Charlie Nelligan and Jacko from O’Dwyer’s era.

When we weren’t winning too many All Irelands you had star players such as Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan and the brilliant Connie Murphy. In more recent times you have the O Se brothers, Declan O’Sullivan and the brilliant Colm Cooper, just to mention a few.

Time to stop the tape as the affable Patrick prepares for his trip to Dublin for surgery. We wish him well. It is always a pleasure to talk to such a pleasant ge ntleman.

Killarney Cougars Deerpark Pitch Basketball Club JUVENILE NEWS & Putt Club U16 Boys Killarney Cougars 50 St Brendan’s 34 Cougars hosted St Brendans at the Pres Gym and produce a good second half performance to take the win their was little between the sides in the opening half with Cougars just ahead 13-11 at the end of the opening qtr and they increased the lead before halftime thanks to good performances from Daniel Aleksenjenko, Colm Talbot and David Bartlett to see Cougars ahead 30-20. Cougars maintained the lead throughout the second half with Eoghan Myers and Ruairi Murphy adding some great scores to see Cougars finish comfortable winners.

U17 Boys Killarney Cougars 53 Vixens 54 A thrilling game at the Pres saw the Vixens withstand a late Cougars comeback to take the win in a very entertaining game. The visitors with held the lead throughout with the three point shooting of John Sexton and Andy Ahern. Cougars stayed in touch with Sean O’Brien Nykta Poutkalis and Eoin Talbot all in good scoring form.

Athea led 29-27 at halftime but lead by 45-35 entering the last qtr with Cougars mounting a big comeback in the closing but time ran out a s Athea just held out for the win.

U18 Div 1 Girls Cup Semi-final Killarney Cougars 41 Caherciveen 42 A thrilling Cup semi-final at the Pres Gym saw Caherciveen win the game from the free throw line in the final second in a game neither side deserved to lose with overtime looming.

Cougars led in the early stages with good baskets by Shelley Clifford and Niamh Griffin and led 10-8 at the end of the opening qtr. The visitor led 2-1 at the break. After this Mastergeeha pushed forward and created some good chances but the visitors scored on the break. MUNSTER SCOR NA NOG FINAL All Ireland glory beckons for the Spa Set Dancers of Kianan O Doherty, Liam Spillane, Gary O Sullivan, Cian O Sullivan, Erin Holland, Meghann Cronin, Aine Brosnan and Orlaith Spillane from the East Kerry Football Board as they had to get over some tough opposition to enter the winners enclosure at the County Cork venue of Ovens where a packed Community Centre enjoyed the best of Music, Song, Dance and Act at the Munster Finals of Scor Na nOg on Sunday last January 8th. Competition was most certainly of the highest standard and in fairness the adjudicators had to make difficult decisions before their final deliberations The remaining five Kerry representatives Spa in Figure Dancing, Cian Sheehan; Firies in the Recitation, Glenflesk in Ballad Group, Instrumental Music by Ballydonoghue and in Leiriu, Na Gaeil with each performing brilliantly but just proved a bridge too far on this occasion; but in a few of those disciplines the Kerry representatives must feel hard done by. However it was a great honour for Scor in the County to have so many involved at this stage of the competition and all the participants can feel proud of their performances, they did both their respective Clubs and County proud on the day.

Of course the Spa Club will be doubly involved at National level as their Quiz Team of Louise Fleming, Daniel O Sullivan, James Lynch, Kieran O Doherty who qualified at the County Finals last November in the C.Y.M.S Hall, Killorglin; and due to a change in this category the County champions in each County will go directly through to the All Ireland Finals.

Spa who are the National champions in this discipline will be all out to make it three in a row of All Ireland titles.

Besides the Clubs involved Kerry were well represented with Fear a Ti Liam O Laoire, formally of Rathmore and now domiciled in Cratloe, County Clare, Tom Herlihy, Ballymacelligot who is Chairman of Munster Scor and Jackie Walsh from the St. Senans Club who is the Counties Delegate to Munster. Presentation of medals to all the winners was performed by the Chairman of the Munster Council, Diarmuid O Sullivan, Cork. The next step in the journey will be the Waterfront Theatre, Belfast On Saturday February 11th commencing at 3pm where the All Ireland Finals of Scor Na Nog will take place. The Quiz will go ahead at the same venue with a starting time of 11am.

killarney notes FAI NATIONAL CUP Killarney Celtic will face Newmarket Celtic of Clare in McDonagh Park in Newmarket next Sunday in the FAI National Cup at 2.00pm. This is a repeat of the same fixture played 30 years between the two sides, and Killarney Celtic progressed by a 3-1 win. Hopefully history will repeat itself!

The club are running a supporters bus which has been filling very fast.

They trailed 1-0 at the break and went down 2-0 shortly after, but switched Cian Casey as a lone striker and that made a huge difference as Celtic’s work rate got them back into the game. Cian made it 2-1 and there was still enough time left for him to nail an equaliser. A well deserved and hard-earned point by players and management.

U16 Girls: Mastergeeha 2 Killarney Celtic 7. A very good display and convincing win. The outstanding Kate Murphy claimed a hat-trick, as did Lauren Burke, with Mairead Bennett also on target.

YOUTHS U14’s: Killarney U14 welcomed neighbours Castleisland to Aghadoe on Saturday last for the first game of 2017, in phase

2 of the West Munster u14 league. Not having played a proper game for a few weeks meant that the team did not start with the now accustomed flair but they quickly found their feet. With a wet ball the emphasis was always going to be on doing the basics well and no player disappointed. Changes were made in majority of positions with a number of first “caps” for some of our younger warriors who got their first taste of playing on a full pitch and really stepped up. Castleisland never gave up and helped serve up a nail biting match where Killarney came out one try ahead. Finally, many thanks to all the supporters that continue to give this team the support from the sidelines. We are looking forward to resuming training outdoors under the new lights from 7 to 8p.m. On Tuesday.

Next match is at home next Saturday against Tralee.

U16’s: Killarney travelled to Listowel last Saturday for the first-round game of the Under 16 Munster Bowl competition.

As expected, Listowel were really up for this game as Killarney had beaten them comfortably on their previous two encounters this year. A tight encounter with defence the key, saw Killarney finish the first half 3-0 up, with a penalty kick coolly converted from the 22 by no. 9 Chris Carey. The second half resumed as the first ended with both sides defending aggressively, Killarney’s breakthrough came on 45 minutes when no. 10 Cian Murphy scored under the posts off a rehearsed rolling lineout maul, Murphy then converted his own try to make it 10-0. Almost immediately from the restart, Listowel scored a converted try under the posts as a result of a huge defensive mix-up by Killarney’s backs. Killarney’s Chris Carey again scored a long range penalty kick, with 10 to go to leave the score 13-7, again almost identical to the first try. Killarney finished off the game with captain Richard Wallace scoring off a rolling maul, final score 18-7. Next game v Dolphin at home next Saturday to KO at 11.30am. Training in Aghadoe Thursday 6.45 to 8pm U18’s: Last Saturday, KRFC were hosts to the combined squad of Castleisland/Abbeyfeale in the first round of the U18 Bowl competition. Things started badly as the official referee never turned up and a visiting person agreed to refereed the match. A hugely competitive match got underway with the visitors scoring two unconverted tries in the first half, and the fantastic Alan Lynch crossing the white line for Killarney, with Kieran O’Connor converting, with 5 minutes to go in the second half. The visitors scored a third try to make the score 15-7, early in the second half.

However, luck was not on Killarney’s side as Shane Looney crossed the line for the first of our disallowed tries.

However, Killarney dominated the action and with 10 minutes to go, Dylan McCarthy, playing the game of his life, crossed the line, and Kieran converted again, bringing the scores to 14-15 in the visitors favour. With the game almost over, and Killarney pushing for the win, Alan Lynch again crossed the line to the delight of the home crowd.

However, the referee deemed the last pass a forward pass, and did so from almost the half way line! The general consensus was the try was perfect and with the referee 50 yards away, it’s a

decision that irked the home crowd.

A hugely disappointing finish for the lads, a game they did not deserve to lose. Special mention has to go to Alan Murphy, Cathal Healy and Jack Kelliher who were outstanding with the sublime Dylan McCarthy leading from the front as he has done all season.

SENIORS Our Seniors travelled the short distance to Ballymalis in Listry last Sunday to take on Killorglin in the semi final of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. Conditions were perfect for the epic encounter that ensued, with Killorglin steaming ahead in the opening exchanges scoring a penalty and a try within the first ten minutes. Our lads responded with a very well worked try coming from Aaron Jones on the left wing, leaving a difficult conversion which went left and wide. Just before half time, Killorglin scored another try, however we were awarded a penalty try following some serious pressure on the home side’s line. Killarney’s Paudie Sheahan slotted some excellent penalties home to bring the scores even with a few minutes to go. The pack was outstanding in the scrum and when Killarney were awarded a penalty at the death, with the scores 18 points each, Killarney went for the scrum, with Colin O’Sullivan crossing for the winner. The final score was 18-23 to Killarney and the crowd witnesses a cracker of a match from Ger Moynihan’s charges. Colin McCarthy and J.P. Kissane really stood out as the whole team played cracking rugby. The final has been fixed for the 26th of February with venue to be confirmed.

Happy New Year to everyone. Our U13 boys basketball team is participating in the county competition this Sunday, 15th Jan at 10am in Duagh. It is the first event in 2017 for us. Best of luck to the team. A huge thanks to Tim O’Sullivan for managing the boys, and Emir Coffey for assisting. Our U13 boys Futsal team also began training last weekend in preparation for the county competition on 5th February. The National Final of both these events take place in Dublin on 6th May as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Community Games.

PLOUGHING New Years Day saw club Member Tony Wharton head off to Macroom for the first ploughing match of 2017. Mentored by club member and brother Thomas Wharton, Tony finished in 3rd place in the Intermediate Section with 85 points. It was a very successful ploughing match with over 50 competitors taking part. The next ploughing events will take them to Causeway on the 5th February, Ardfert on the 12th February and Ballyduff on the 19th February, weather permitting! ONGOING TRAINING On an off-water training continues as per coaches’ texts. We have had some amazingly pleasant sessions on the water right through December and the early days of January and let’s hope this continues.

Recent Activities As well as our usual training sessions , our club enjoyed a festive ‘Ho Ho Ho’ Row just before Christmas, where everyone took part by wearing some seasonal attire for a row out, followed by warming drinks and festive fare at the clubhouse.

Many thanks to everyone who helped out in any way to mark the Christmas season. To follow this, many of our senior members joined forces with scores of our juniors for two sessions on the ice at Killarney Ice Rink, one session just before Christmas and due to popular demand, another session just after.

No bones were broken and the speed and agility by some of our skaters surprised even themselves!!

UPCOMING EVENTS Our next event on the rowing calendar is the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships being held in the University of Limerick on Saturday 21st January. Registrations are in by now, so best of luck to all partaking!

The Maye Breen Cup final and semi-finals were played on Monday 9th January.

In the first semi-final Maureen & Gery Mc Cormick beat Danielle and her father Danny Looney. In the second semi-final Laura Keane and Paraic O Mahony beat Helen O Neil and Dale Mc Carthy in a cracking game to set up a final with the Mc Cormicks. In the final Paraic and Laura after a struggle got the better of 1990 winner Maureen and Gery to win the Maye Breen Cup for the first time.

Congrats to all players for a great night and thanks to everybody for taking part in this year’s Maye Breen competition.

Our 73rd AGM took place recently in the Dromhall Hotel. Anglers from Kerry, Cork & beyond were in attendance.

Matters arising from last years AGM were discussed & reports from the outgoing officers were presented to the meeting. Once again “The Charity” fishing competition was hugely supported with anglers raising 8750 euro.

Under our new Chairperson John Lyne, we elected officers & a club committee for 2017.

SCOR NA NÓG MUNSTER CHAMPIONS Well done to all the competitors in the Munster Scor na nÓg final held in Éire Óg GAA Club, Ovens, Cork. Our figure and set dancers performed brilliantly. Our set Dancers were successful and will join our Quiz team to compete in Belfast in the All Ireland on Saturday 11th February. Spa were the only Kerry Club successful in Munster but all performed magnificently. Standard were extremely high. Well done to coaches Triona and Mairead Mangan.

Firies Coiste na nOg

Our Club was very proud to have the talented Cian Sheehan represent Firies GAA Club in the Munster Finals of Scòr na nOg in Ovens, County Cork last weekend. Unfortunately, despite a fantastic performance, the title went to the Rebel County. Well done Cian, you did both the Club and County very proud.

On Sunday, 8th of January, Firies Coiste na nÓg celebrated the achievements of the clubs’ young men.

Overall, the season proved to be very successful for the club. The U-12s, U-14s, U-15s and the Firies Minors from 2016 were all in receipt of their medals from their individual age category and subsequent successes. Eugene Cosgrave, Chairman of the Coiste na nÓg along with their diligent coaches presented the medals and expressed their delight in their achievements throughout the year.

COACH EDUCATION East Kerry/ Kenmare clubs interested in doing a Foundation Level coaching course should contact Vince Cooper as soon as possible. The course can be delivered over two nights or on a Saturday. Clubs must have at least twelve people in attendance. Amalgamations will be accepted between clubs to reach the required numbers. This course is aimed at assistant coaches.

Courses will be given on a first come first served basis.

Kerry footballers get new season off to a flying start Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary reports on the opening round of the McGrath Cup KERRY, who fielded a side drawn entirely from their Under 21 squad and managed by Jack O’Connor and the Under 21 management team, had little difficulty in disposing of a weakened Tipperary fifteen in the opening round of the McGrath Cup before a surprisingly large attendance of over 1,500 people at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Sunday last.

Jack will be happy with this display ahead of the Under 21 championship campaign which gets underway with a game against Clare at the Austin Stack Park venue on March 8 but given the strength of the opposition the last day, he is hardly going to get carried away with the 3-11 to 1-3 victory. thew O’Sullivan who played two games for the Under 21s last year before being ruled out of the Munster Final against Cork due to injury, helped himself to two of those goals as Kerry displayed a refreshing appetite for the task in hand running out easy winners in the end having led by 1-8 to 1-2 at the break.

It was interesting to see that the new “mark” rule had very little impact on proceedings on Sunday last but no doubt managers are sure to use it to their advantage as the season progresses.

So Kerry, with Eamonn Fitzmaurice in charge of the senior panel this time, head to Mallow for their second game on Sunday next against Cork

knowing that a win there will earn them a place in the McGrath Cup final on January 22. Cork open their campaign midweek on this Wednesday evening away to Tipperary and on the same evening Clare are away to Limerick where a win for the Bannermen would secure them a final place. At a recent press briefing Eamonn Fitzmaurice gave an up-date on the current situation with regard to player availability for the foreseeable future – and one man who will not be part of the panel this year is Padraig O’Connor of Legion who has emigrated to America.

Kerry will be without players from Dr Crokes, Kenmare and Glenbeigh-Glencar until their respective club championship campaigns have finished and the likes of Gavin Crowley (Templenoe), Jack Savage (O’Rahillys), Ronan Shanahan (Austin Stacks), Kevin McCarthy (Kilcummin) and Shane Murphy (Dr Crokes), once his club championship commitments come to an end will be in training with the senior panel.

Neither Aidan O’Mahony nor Kieran Donaghy have yet committed for the coming year but they are expected to make a decision on their futures in the green and gold jersey in the coming weeks as is Colm Cooper once his club championship Commitments have finished.

Following the retirement of Marc Ó Sé, Kerry will also of course have to plan without a member of that family in the side for the first time since the late Paidi made his debut as a Minor way back in 1971.

Kerry returned to training on Tuesday of last week and apart from a slight injury being carried by Anthony Maher they are relatively injury free for the Cork fixture which throws in at the Mallow GAA complex at 2pm.

Incidentally, the situation with regard to the Kerry senior captaincy for the coming year is that Dr Crokes, as county champions, have the honour of naming the new Kerry senior football captain but they have chosen to delay that announcement until their Club Championship campaign has been completed. Until then, Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice will appoint an interim captain.
