St Patrick’s Festival team reveals this year’s theme

Diversity to lead the way in the Emerald City

EDITOR'S VIEW A kaleidoscope to grab and shake PLANS are already in place for this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The St Patrick’s Festival Chill Áirne, now in its third year, has been a major success story in the town’s growing festival portfolio and last year’s parade brought the tourism season to a colourful start. This year’s theme, Diversity, presents every age group and all businesses, clubs and organisations with a fabulously broad canvas. A wonderful prism through which to portray your very own take on our Emerald City celebrations, it is sure to give you plenty of scope to conjure up ideas to make the festival your very own. So grab and shake the kaleidoscope and let your imagination throw some

dazzling shapes this March 17. Our columnist Anne Lucey’s report last week on issues in Killarney National Park elicited a huge response from our readers and this week Killarney Advertiser brings you an overview of the threat of rhododendron to our native woodlands; see pages 40-41. Last but not least, whether you are a seasoned golfer or have always planned to get in the swing of things but haven’t yet teed up for action, check out our golfing special this week.

THE wizards behind the St Patrick’s Festival Chill Áirne have been hard at work over the winter months preparing for this year’s big event, Killarney Advertiser can confirm. The festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly has just announced this year’s theme for the parade. “One year on from the centenary year we have decided to celebrate our Diversity, the parade will celebrate our variety of sports, activities, clubs, musicians, dancers and local characters,” said Anne Marie. “We invite you to use your creative skills and imagination to interpret the theme with lots of colour and fun. This is a call to action for all participants, we want energy, creativity, imagination, humour, music and dance. Preparations are well underway so feel free to contact us if you would like to get involved in the parade or the festival.” Anne Marie put particular emphasis on the support received from businesses and the local authority. “We would like to thank all our sponsors for last year, their support is critical, especially Kerry County Council, without their co operation and financial support the festival and parade could not happen,” she said. “New sponsorship opportunities are evolving and we are happy to meet with any sponsors to discuss.” Killarney Advertiser is delighted to support the festival, which is organised by a subcommittee of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and together with the support of Kerry County Council and local volunteers organises a full weekend of family-friendly activities. Watch this space in coming weeks for further details and the committee can be contacted at Stpatricksfestivalkillarney@gmail.com

Fr Kevin lashes out at the Bandits MOYVANE parish priest Fr Kevin McNamara has lodged a complaint with the Broadcasting Authority after Holy Communion was called “haunted bread” on air. Fr Kevin said the “ridiculing of the Eucharist” had left him “hurt beyond words”. The description was used by Blindboy Boatclub of The Rubberbandits on RTE’s Late Late Show on January 6 – the Feast of the Epiphany. Fr McNamara, who ministered for many years in here in Killarney parish, criticised the comments made by the comedian, who's real name is David Chambers. on the rise, David Chambers said young people attending Midnight Mass at Christmas were ‘not going there for haunted bread, but because it was a family event. Everyone at Midnight Mass is half-cut anyway’. “It hurt me beyond words to see the Eucharist ridiculed on RTÉ’s socalled flagship chat show.” Fr Kevin, who is a former curate of Rathmore/Gneeveguilla, added: “Mr Chambers said ‘That’s what it is’, arguing that the Church ‘does not want us to use critical thinking’ and is ‘asking us to eat the ghost of a 2,000-year-old carpenter’. I have made a complaint to the Broadcasting Authority.”

Want to have your say on future use of Áras Phádraig? KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has launched a public consultation process on the future use of the Áras Phádraig building in Killarney. Exodea Consulting Ltd has been appointed to carry out a feasibility study to assess the potential future use of the property on Lewis Road. As part of the feasibility study, Kerry County Council will next week launch an online survey through which people can share their views. A public meeting on January 26 will also give members of the public an opportunity to suggest how the Áras might best be utilised for the benefit of the community. There will also be engagement with key stakeholders and community and voluntary groups in the locality over the coming weeks. The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, said public engagement on the future of Áras Phádraig is essential to ensure its full potential is realised and that the public has a stake in its future. “This facility has enormous potential for Killarney and the surrounding area given its size and location close to the centre of the town. We are now inviting people to contribute their proposals and ideas for its future use and these suggestions will be considered by the consultants who will draw up the feasibility study,” he said. Killarney Municipal district manager Angela McAllen said that the consultants have been asked to identify how any of the social, enterprise, community and arts and culture needs of Killarney could be addressed in developing Áras Phádraig. “To help us identify redevelopment opportunities, we are inviting everyone to attend an open, facilitated public meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday, January 26, in the Killarney Avenue Hotel,” she said. Written submissions can also be made to: Micheál Ó Coileáin, Killarney Municipal District Officer, Kerry County Council, Town Hall, Kenmare Place, Killarney. The online survey will be available from next week on the Municipal District page on the www.killarney.ie website: (http://killarney.ie/killarney-municipal-district/ kerry-county-council/)

Kerry Airport reports 6% soar in passenger numbers in 2016 OVER 325,000 passengers travelled through Kerry Airport last year, marking a 6% increase on the figures for 2015. The positive details of the passenger numbers follow the recent pre-Christmas funding allocation of €2.77 million for Ireland’s four regional airports, including Kerry Airport. The chairman of Kerry Airport, Denis Cregan, said: “We very much welcome the Minister’s announcement and the continued support of the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. Kerry Airport is a key asset for the county and the region and welcomed over 325,000 passengers in 2016, up approximately 6 % on 2015. The Airport needs continued investment and the approximate 600k received recently will assist Kerry Airport in growing passenger numbers into the future. The Airport is looking optimistically forward as tourism numbers to the Island of Ireland grew by almost 11% and while the 6% growth year on year is to be welcomed, Kerry Airport is falling short of the national figures of 11% growth for the period, which is a concern but also an opportunity. This key investment in infrastructure in the airport will ensure we can help deliver the key economic objectives for the region, increased tourism numbers, sustainability and job creation.”

Serious traffic collision on Killarney-Cork road A SERIOUS road traffic accident occurred on the N22 Killarney-Cork road on Monday evening. The crash, in the Pike Hill/Lissivigeen area, involved an articulated truck and a car and took place at 5.45pm. The ambulance and fire service were in attendance. A one-lane traffic system was in operation there temporarily for two hours.

Killarney Advertiser 20.01.17

The grants announced recently provide assistance towards the operational costs incurred by the four regional airports – Kerry, Donegal, Ireland West Airport Knock and Waterford and were in addition to capital grant funding of €2.7 million that was paid in 2016 towards safety and security investments at the airports. Kerry Airport is ideally located for anyone wishing to travel on business or pleasure with direct flights to seven destinations including: London Luton, London Stansted, Frankfurt-Hahn, Alicante and Faro (summer 2017) with Ryanair and to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional. Forty-bed mental health services facility remains unopened in Killarney

Kerry PNA representatives Cormac Williams, Mary Delaney, Pat Murphy, Ruth Adams and Finbarr Murphy outside Deer Lodge.

Friends rally to help Maureen LIFE changed beyond recognition for popular Headford lady Maureen Kelliher when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February of last year. But her friends and the greater community promptly joined forces to come to her aid, forming the Friends of Maureen Kelliher to help support Maureen. “We want to raise funds to cover unforeseen costs and to help take the pressure off,” said Maureen’s friend Ann Courtney. Maureen, who has always been an active member of the community, is unable walk without any support and uses a walking aid to go about her everyday life. “What most would take for granted like simply being able to sit in a car or do the shop-

ping, is a struggle Maureen strives to overcome,” said Ann. Eager to start 2017 on a positive note, Maureen paid tribute to her friends, family and community for their support, as well as the community, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Health Service Executive. The mum of four is a founding member of Glenflesk Ladies GAA and is also a long-time member of Killarney Celtic FC as well as a supporter of Killarney Athletic FC. Friends of Maureen has set up a bank account at Killarney Credit Union with account number 60169, BIC KIROIE21, IBAN IE81KIRO99219319086211; and at Rathmore Credit Union, account number 14087, BIC RDRNIE21, IBAN IE65RDRN99106300229745.

FUNDING is not currently available to open and staff a major new mental health unit in Killarney, it has emerged. In September, Killarney Advertiser highlighted how members of the Kerry branch of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association were concerned that the brand-new complex was lying idle. Following a meeting between the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association (PNA) and the area manager for the Health Service Executive South, Sinead Glennon, last week, the Health Service Executive (HSE) informed the PNA that no funding was currently available to open and staff Deer Lodge, the new 40-bed mental health unit at St Margaret’s Road. The PNA said it was told the funding for Kerry Mental Health Services of €1.65m announced in the 2017 HSE Service Plan would be spent exclusively on renovations works at the acute admission unit, Kerry University Hospital, Tralee. Deer Lodge will replace the current longstay O’Connor Unit on the grounds of St Finan’s Hospital, Killarney. “Ms Glennon said that HSE South was actively attempting to source funding for the opening of Deer Lodge from the Department of Health and it was hoped funding would be made available in the coming months,” said Cormac Williams, Killarney, of the Kerry branch of the PNA. “The staffing proposals as were outlined by the HSE for Deer Lodge were rejected as unacceptable by the PNA as the ratio of healthcare assistance to nurses proposed (one HCAs for every two nurses) was far too high and would not be in keeping with a higher skill, therapeutic, recovery and rehabilitative-based model of care.” The PNA has also expressed a wish to see new service concepts such as crisis intervention beds made available in the new Deer Lodge complex. “Currently no crisis intervention beds are available within Kerry mental service area,” said Mr Williams.

Senator Mark Daly receives approval for consultation on Amhrán na bhFiann THE Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, the Irish Overseas and Diaspora, Senator Mark Daly, is due to act coordinator of the public consultation to be held by Seanad Éireann on the national anthem in 2017. The purpose of this initiative is to invite submissions from interested parties or citizens to consider the most appropriate way for the State to treat the National Anthem. “The basis of this public consultation comes from the recent change to the copyright of both the music, and lyrics, in Irish and English, of Amhrán na bhFiann. All are now out of copyright since 2012, and it’s imperative that rules and guidelines are put in place to protect the anthem,” said Senator Daly. Over the next number of months, Seanad Éireann will consult with citizens on their views on this issue. “The National Anthem should be respected, and protected, and I am delighted to see that there us such cross-party support for such measures,” said the Kenmare-based Senator. “When copyright expired in 2012, Fine Gael gave a strong commitment to act on the issue. However, despite many attempts by me and other members of Seanad Éireann to force them into acting, they have done nothing to protect this important anthem.”

Kerry businesses to champion Kerry as one of the top choices in Ireland

Shane Walsh, general manager, JRI America, Aislinn Desmond, captain, Kerry senior ladies, and Colm Cooper, AIB, Tralee.

Pretty Polly among a number of sites to be developed this year THE former Pretty Polly factory in Killarney is one of a number of buildings and facilities earmarked for development in 2017, Kerry County Council CEO Moira Murrell has confirmed. Strong growth in the county last year gives reason for optimism in 2017, according to a stakeholder group in Kerry, which added that cross-agency collaboration is key to winning investment in the county. The group, comprising representatives from Kerry County Council, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, IT Tralee and Kerry Local Enterprise Office (LEO), said a number of successful initiatives during 2016 have combined to give reason for optimism around investment for 2017. The chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, agrees that 2016 has seen major progress on economic development in the county including, in the council’s case, supports and investments such as a €60m investment in capital projects, a €30m upgrade of the county’s largest water supply scheme, and the establishment of enterprise hubs. “The former Denny factory site and the former Pretty Polly site in Killarney will be progressed further in 2017 and millions

of euro will be invested in rural areas through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and Clár funding,” said Ms Murrell. This year will also see the Kerry Technology Park coming into full Kerry ownership, she added. “As a centre for education, innovation and incubation, it is key to our economic expansion as a county,” said the council CEO. Ms Murrell added: “Tourism continues to grow and our new Tourism Strategy will drive that growth across Kerry.” Many companies in Kerry are expanding which is indicative of confidence in the local economy, according to Ms Murrell. “The council now has a dedicated Economic Development Unit and a newly appointed Economic Development Officer and this will drive the implementation of the new jobs and enterprise plan for the county,” she added.

WE REPORTED in the past fortnight how 14 of Kerry’s largest industries together with 10 sponsors have collaborated on a major road signage campaign to encourage visitors and emigrants to come live and work in Kerry. The collaboration involves Kerry County Council, IDA and Enterprise Ireland and organisations such as the GAA and Kerry District League and highlights a major Kerry Expo which will take place in the INEC Killarney on April 9. The signage points to over 1,000 job vacancies in the county, and so “depicts the reality of that what lies behind the Kingdom’s magical scenery”, according to campaign and expo organiser Liz Maher. “The campaign references some of Kerry’s major employers who are either currently recruiting or will be recruiting in in the near future,” said Ms Maher. “Some of these job vacancies will be showcased at the Kerry EXPO in the INEC Killarney on April 9.” Last year the Kerry EXPO showcased 120 businesses throughout the county. “The exhibition serves as a platform for all businesses operating within the Kerry region to promote their goods, services and products to the general public,” added Ms Maher. Businesses interested in exhibiting should email Kerryexpo@gmail.com or register their interest in receiving an exhibitor application

Global success for marathon man Conor

Conor Cusack showing some of his marathon medals.

HE LACED on his running shoes for his very first marathon in March 2014 and just under three years later Kerry man Conor Cusack has distinguished himself at some of the world’s most famous athletic events. Tralee native Conor, who works in the Department of Arts in Killarney, completed his 50th medal in Clonakilty in December. “My sister Catherine who lives in the UK is also a runner, and I have her to thank for putting the idea of running into my head,” Conor told Killarney Advertiser. While completing the Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon, Conor met Boston Marathon icons Bobbi Gibb, Amby Burfoot and Adrianne Haslett. “I’m a proud member of the Born to Run marathon club in Tralee and Marathon Club Ireland who have helped me immeasurably to get to where I am today,” said Conor. “I am now a running mentor to a ‘Couch to 42’ training group who will complete their first marathon in Tralee next March.” Conor’s dazzling medal haul comes from across the globe. “I’ve run in 15 different countries: Ireland, UK, Portugal, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, USA, Morocco, Turkey, Netherlands, Sweden, Malta, South Africa and Poland,” he said. Among the highlights of his running career to date are the 56k Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town, South Africa. Conor also ran with the famous Team Hoyt, from Boston, when they were in Courtmacsherry, west Cork, in 2015. “Dick Hoyt has pushed his son Rick in over 1,000 races including marathons, duathlons and triathlons (six of them being Ironman competitions),” said Conor. They use a specially designed “Hoyt Running Chair” which is now used by assisted running families all around the world. “It was an honour to push Rick at the Courtmacsherry race.” Conor added: “I have made so many lifelong friends both in Ireland and abroad through running, it has truly been a life-changer.” The Kerry runner also has medals from the Berlin and Paris marathons as well as from the 60k Ultra Marathon in Central Park, New York, and the 100k Tralee Ultra Marathon. “I will be competing in two of the marathon ‘majors’, Boston and Chicago, this year,” he added. A selection of Conor’s many marathon medals.

Tragedy in Currow as man dies in fall

Head chef has the recipe for an awardwinning start at Cahernane House Hotel

THE community of Currow has been numbed following the tragic death of a popular young local man, Aidan Daly. Mr Daly, of Lyre, Currow, passed away on Monday following a fall. The 32-year-old had been working on a farm project in the Currow area when the accident occurred at around 11.30am. Emergency services attended the scene and brought him to University Hospital Kerry by ambulance. This is the second fatal accident in as many months in the area. In mid-November, Currow was in mourning following the loss of Shane Foley, 43, in a farming-related accident. Mr Daly is survived by his parents Batt and Rose, brothers John, Cathal and Kevin, sisters Eimear and Róisín, niece and goddaughter Sadhbh, sister in law Maria, partners Kerrie, Deirdre, Patrick and Bernard, grandmother Nellie O’Sullivan, uncles and aunts, cousins and friends. The Requiem Mass takes place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, at 11am today, Friday, with burial in St Michael’s Cemetery, Currow.

PAUL O’CONNOR has marked his recent appointment as head chef at the Cahernane House Hotel, Killarney, with the addition of two AA Rosettes for the four-star hotel’s Herbert Restaurant. The hotel, an elegant 19th-century manor house on the edge of Killarney National Park, recently re-opened under new ownership. Paul brings extensive experience from a career that includes award winning establishments such as the Sydney Opera House and, closer to home, Sheen Falls in Kenmare, Killarney’s Lake Hotel, which received its first AA Rosette under his guidance, and more recently the Muckross Park Hotel. “Paul is a very welcome addition to our team,” said Cahernane House Hotel general manager Emer Corridan. “We want to delight guests with our cuisine at the Cahernane House Hotel and we look forward to the new and exciting menus that he will create for our guests.”

Creative wizardry gives Legion website a brand-new look A HUSBAND and wife team together with a Kerry Rose helped ensure Killarney Legion GAA Club’s brand-new website took centre stage this week. Club members gathered at Randles Bros Nissan Dealers, Killarney, to unveil the new website on Friday and you can access it at www.legiongaa.com. “With technology now making the world a much smaller place the role of club websites and social media has never been as prevalent,” said club PRO Adam Moynihan. “Members and supporters are now spread far and wide across the country and even the world and their only means of keeping up with club affairs is through these avenues.” With this in mind Killarney Legion GAA Club enlisted the help of IT wizards and husbandand-wife team Eoin and Joanne O’Carroll who gave the club website a visual and virtual revamp and with the help of senior player Cathal Sheahan the website is now live. Kerry Rose and Legion stalwart Danielle O’Sullivan officially relaunched the website. You can now play the club lotto online as well as pay membership through the website. This is possible due to a partnership

with myclubfinances.com who cater for the facility with a secure and highly reputable system. An online shop where you can view and purchase the latest club merchandise is now available also. “Huge thanks to Eoin and Joanne and also to Cathal who put timeless hours into presenting the sleek new look to the website,” said club chairman Enda Walshe. The website launch also afforded the club the opportunity to un-

veil its own Garda vetting procedure for within the club. “This is always an ongoing process so it is our goal to ensure that every member is vetted,” said Enda. “The GAA recently launched a new, easy to use e-vetting system and the club was delighted to appoint Christina Tangney as its dedicated children’s officer. Christina is a qualified social care worker and therefore provides an ideal profile for her position.”

WE CAUGHT up with the team from Killarney Credit Union on Wednesday morning as it officially launched its online banking system. The new IT system now allows its 25,000 members full access to their accounts online, which includes internal and external funds transfers and bill payment. A mobile app is also available to download on Apple and Android devices. Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union, said: “We transferred to a new member IT system last October and this involved the implementation of the online banking module for members. We have seen a very strong take up of this service with nearly 600 members signed up to date.” Members can register for the online banking service by calling into the branches at Beech Road and Park Road, Killarney, or in Kenmare to sign up. Alternatively, they can register online on www.killarneycu.ie and can receive their PIN by post. The online banking system is delivered by Progress Banking (an IT supplier to 175 credit unions in the UK and Ireland,) and delivers a high level of safety and security on its software and holds ISO27001 certification. The online banking system offers many benefits for both members and the credit union, according to Helen Courtney Power, business development officer, Killarney Credit Union. “Members have full access to their accounts through the website and mobile app. They can also sign up to receive statements and AGM notification electronically,” said Ms Courtney Power. “These also help the credit union, in that it reduces staff costs with accounts queries and postal costs with statements.” Killarney Credit Union will be rolling out additional electronic services in the coming months to include membership sign up and loan applications online. A direct debit service will also be rolled out which allow members to set up direct debits from their accounts. This will facilitate easier loan repayments, bill payments and regular savings transfer.

GOLFING KINGDOM 2017

You’ll be on a par with the best thanks to David Keating Golf PGA Team THE team at David Keating Golf is looking forward to the 2017 season at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. The team, comprising David Keating, Stephen Hoey, Diarmaid Fraser and Mark Beckett, promises to ensure all ages enjoy the perfect experience on the fairways. “The giant strides taken over the last few years have been immense with significant investment in all things golf,” said David Keating. “From a retail perspective we are currently refitting our pro shop to provide our customers with a special experience when they visit our store with a brighter and more spacious unit.” Younger golfers will also benefit from new developments this year. “There’s some great news for junior golfers also with the launch of our first-ever junior golf after school programme,” said David. “We have teamed up with Junior Golf Passport and our aim is to introduce golf to children in a structured learning environment under the guidance of a PGA professional. Junior golfers will learn about all aspects of golf including short game and long game as well as becoming familiar with a golf club environment. “They will also learn life skills such as honesty, sportsmanship and concentration. We are also starting our weekly junior lessons on Saturday mornings from 11am-12pm in Lacabane and the cost per junior golfer is €4.” The big move forward for Killarney Golf & Fishing Club this year will be the introduction of junior tees in Lacabane which will create an environment where children can play a course length that is suitable for their age group, added David. “This will bring junior golf development into line with other sports that use reduced-sized pitches for underage games and will mean that golf is much more fun for juniors,” he said. And of course adult members and customers will also enjoy the year ahead. “We certainly don’t want to forget about our adult members and customers who want to continually improve as golfers,” said David. “As well as having two teaching/club fitting bays in Killarney we also have TrackMan high-speed cameras and a brand new club fitting programme on site. Our PGA team are also organising weekly ladies coffee mornings in February and everyone is welcome.” Individual lessons are available seven days a week. GOLFING KINGDOM 2017

Tee up at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club KILLARNEY GOLF & FISHING CLUB has recently finished its third season since becoming a members club in 2013. Year on year, the club has made huge strides forward in terms of course presentation, condition, consistency and playability. Last season saw the courses present better than ever before, and they received huge amounts of positive feedback from members and visitors alike. It was recently announced that both Killeen and Mahony’s Point have climbed in the Golf Digest Ireland Top 100 course rankings for the second successive year, with Killeen now ranked in the Top 10 parkland courses in the country for 2017. The club re-invested more than €300,000 into the courses last year alone, with the main projects undertaken as follows:

Killeen

•Major re-model of greenside water hazard and fairway re-grade to our eighth hole •Re-instatement of existing wall along the first hole and construction of new stone wall from beginning of fairway up to green. The club also re-modelled the fairway undulations and approach during this time. This project is to be continued in 2017 by extending the stone wall around the green and “migrating” the green towards the lake •Construction of new pathways throughout Killeen – almost 800m this far

Mahony’s Point

•Construction of two new tee complexes on the par 3, 4th and the 14th holes. This was a total re-design of our Championship, White, Green, and Red tee boxes on both holes •Re-design of the greenside bunker on the 4th and 13th holes including the installation of the market leading bunker blinder liner. Re-model of bridges on the 4th and 13th fairways. Both of these projects are part of an overhaul of all bunkers and tee boxes on the club’s Mahony’s Point layout over the next number of years •Major drainage project and bunker redesign on the par 5, 16th holes including upgrade of bridges and pathways on approach

MEMBERS

The club currently has a number of membership options, all of which offer superb value for money.

Quality course and warm welcome at Dooks DOOKS GOLF CLUB, situated half an hour from Killarney on the Ring of Kerry and on the Wild Atlantic Way, is one of the top-class links courses in the South West region. The club had an exceptional 2016 reporting record green fee revenue, which had increased by 24% on the previous year and a 3% increase in membership revenue. The majority of this increased business was from the North American market. Feedback on the course condition was very positive with many guests and members commenting that the greens were some of the best they had played on. This was reflected in the club jumping three places to 25th in the an-

nual Golf Digest rankings (http:// www.theirishgolfblog.com/2017/01/ golf-digest-ireland-top-100-ireland. html?m=1). And the club confirmed it won’t be standing still. Plans are steadily taking shape to develop the recently acquired 90 acres of additional land which will help the club to carry out a re-design under the guidance of the world-renowned course architect Martin Hawtree. This re-design will also include new state-of-the-art practice and range facilities. Following the recent appointment of Dan Sugrue as PGA head professional, the club is also installing a new TrackMan studio, this will be used to coach members, club

teams and visitors alike. It’s exciting times ahead for Dooks, noted Maurice O’Meara, general manager. “I was delighted to see the increased activity at the club in 2016, bookings are very strong for 2017,” he said.

“The new projects that are on the horizon will be milestones for the club which will allow us to continue to compete at the very highest level. We have a great team of staff here at Dooks and the course has been in amazing condition” When you come to Dooks you will get a sense of a quality course with a warm welcome.” Dooks is currently offering fantastic membership packages; for further details on membership and rates for 2017 email office@dooks.com. community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 4:12-23: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.” Jesus applies this to himself and his message. Who have been the Jesus people who have been a source of light to you? Have you been such a light for others? His message was a call to repentance, to a change of attitude toward God, from seeing God as one to be feared, to seeing God as a God of love. When have you heard that call in your life? What was it like for you? Jesus invited disciples to join him in his mission. In responding, the disciples “left their nets: to follow Jesus. Sometimes we have to disentangle ourselves from other things to give ourselves freely and wholeheartedly to a commitment. Have you experienced being ‘enmeshed’ and being free? Where did you find life? In v. 23 we have a summary of the ministry of Jesus – “proclaiming the good news of the kingdom” and witnessing to this by teaching and healing. Who have been the people you have known who have witnessed to the “kingdom”, the reign of God in our world? What have been the signs that accompanied their witness? When have you done this yourself? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

THE CHOICE IS OURS

YOU may have heard this story before: An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A battle is going on inside all of us,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good – joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed”.’ In a way, it is as simple as that. Each one of us faces hundreds of choices every day. Mostly, they are minor decisions that may not seem important at the time. But they all add up to something. They make us the person we are. Do our choices make us the kind of person who follows Jesus, or the kind of person who goes in the opposite direction? We can stay stuck where we are, repeating the same old patterns, or we can leave it all behind and choose a new path, like Peter, Andrew, James and John did. They were called, and they took decisive action. This initial choice to follow Jesus was reinforced and remade, day in and day out, during their discipleship journey, just as it is on ours. Tríona Doherty

Reflexology promotes relaxation

Reflexology works with the central nervous system, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

THE theory that reflexology works with the nervous system builds on research done in the 1890s by Sir Henry Head and Sir Charles Sherrington, who began to show through their research that a neurological relationship exists between the skin and the internal organs, and that the whole nervous system adjusts to a stimulus. According to the theory, the reflexologist's application of pressure to feet, hands, or ears sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves in these extremities to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level. This enhances overall relaxation, brings internal organs and their systems into a state of optimum functioning, and increases blood supply. Reflexology reduces pain by reducing stress and improving mood. This theory suggests that pain is a subjective experience created by

your brain. The brain does this in response to the sensory experience of pain, but it can also work independently of sensory input and create pain in response to emotional or cognitive factors. According to this theory, reflexology may reduce pain by reducing stress and improving mood. Yet another theory holds that there is a "vital energy" in the human body. If stress is not addressed, it leads to congestion of energy, which in turn causes bodily inefficiencies, which can lead to illness. According to this theory, reflexology helps keep the energy flowing and when the energy is following it's preventing illness in the long term. All major health insurance companies recognise that reflexology prevents illnesses , therefore depending on your insurance package some clients relieve 12 sessions a year covered or half paid by their insurance. Eve Kelliher reviews the Sothys Paris Collagen Hyaluronic facial now available at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

THE idea of a steam clean always appeals but have you ever thought of how steam can benefit your complexion? Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio this week unveiled the top-class new Sothy’s Paris Collagen Hyaluronic facial. “This is a deeppore cleansing facial with steamer and hot towels,” explains Jill. This is a super-effective treatment, which involves extractions, yet is still seriously relaxing – you simply lie back on the luxurious heated bed and let your therapist do the rest. The Sothys deep-pore cleansing treatment aspect of the facial definitely leaves the complexion feeling balanced and also boosts radiance – so much so that I feel you can even consider skipping the foundation if you wish the next day! “This is a facial that can be customised according to the skin’s requirements and is recommended for all ages,” adds Jill. The therapist will begin the facial by thoroughly cleansing the face. Skin analysis follows, to determine your skin type and choose the appropriate products and treatments. Exfoliation comes next, using a mechanical or chemical exfoliant to rub away the surface dead skin cells, before the steam machine is pressed into action. “We use a machine that directs a thin vapour of warm steam to your face,” says Jill. “This is relaxing and helps soften up any blackheads and whiteheads to be extracted.” Following an extraction (or two), lie back and enjoy the facial massage. “This both relaxes and stimulates your skin and facial muscles,” says Jill. Last but not least, a facial mask is applied targeting your skin type and condition. “At the end we use Sothys toner, serums, moisturiser, neck and sunscreen,” said Jill. “It's important to maintain results with correct home care.” Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio stocks the entire Sothys skincare range and has some excellent special offers. Call 064-6632966 for more details.

Leah and her family help set wheels in motion for health link bus fundraisers

A

S SHE battles with a rare form of cancer, generous-spirited Glenflesk teenager Leah Lynch is urging the community to get behind a major fundraiser to help fellow cancer patients in the county. Leah, 19, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in November, and started chemotherapy treatment at Cork University Hospital in the weeks before Christmas. Her mother, Breda Lynch, is one of the founding members of the Glenflesk ag Rith jogging group. The Kerry Cork Health Link bus, which brings patients from Kerry to Cork for cancer treatment, passes Breda’s house five days a week and the importance of this service struck a chord with Breda and Leah. Although Leah herself is not using the bus, as her treatment requires her to stay at the hospital, the teenager and her family are keen to help organisers of the Run for the Bus events staged by Glenflesk ag Rith in aid of Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus. The first Run for the Bus event is a 5k family fun run, which takes place at Glenflesk GAA pitch on Sunday, January 29. The suggested donation is €10 per adult and €5 per child, or €20 per family (two adults and two children). The run takes placed for 12 noon until 2.30pm and spot prizes, music and refreshments will be available. “Everyone is welcome and we would greatly appreciate your support,” said organiser Niamh O’Connor of Glenflesk ag Rith. “Following this the Glenflesk ag Rith members will aim complete a 10k run, a half marathon and all going well the final event is the Dublin marathon next October. The Kerry/Cork health link bus takes cancer patients to and from Cork five days a week to receive treatment and follow-up appointments,” said Niamh. “Funding comes entirely from sponsorship and fundraising events. No Government or HSE funding is received.”

Make a date to help Killarney volunteers save lives

ENJOY some eye-catching photography through the months ahead and help save lives the bargain by picking up one of the last remaining calendars produced by Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. The calendars feature mesmerising photography by acclaimed local snapper Konrad Paprocki who teamed up with volunteers of the unit throughout last year to capture the calendar boys and girls on camera. Proceeds from the sales of the calendars, priced at €10, will go towards buying vital new lifesaving equipment for the unit, said its co-ordinator Leo O’Connor. “There are a few remaining calendars so get them now!” told Killarney Advertiser. “All the funds raised by the calendar will go towards purchasing life-saving equipment.” Leo paid tribute to Helen Duggan and Nikki Taddei of the group who organised the production of what is the unit’s first-ever calendar. The calendars are available in Horan’s Healthfood Stores, Eason Killarney, Eager’s Newsagents and Sheahan’s Off-Licence. One of many eye-catching scenes from the calendar. PICTURE: KONRAD PAPROCKI

Chance to explore Lourdes this summer

KILLARNEY company O’Callaghan Coach Holidays has some exciting new additions to its portfolio including an eight-day tour to Lourdes in June. O’Callaghan Coach Holidays is one of the only coach tour companies in Ireland offering this type of itinerary in which the Lourdes trip travels by coach directly from Ireland to France without flights. This tour also includes a visit to lovely Bordeaux along the way. Lying at the foothills of the Pyrenees, the little village of Lourdes in southern France has been welcoming millions of pilgrims from across the globe for over 150 years. On February 11, 1858, 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous saw the first of 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the grotto of Massabielle. Today the little town welcomes almost six million visitors annually, and is listed as the third most visited site for pilgrims, after Rome and the Holy Land. While in Lourdes, passengers will have plenty of time to explore the main sites in the town as well as attending a morning mass and taking part in the nightly torchlight procession. “We are very excited to include Lourdes to our travel schedule for 2017, and one of the only coach companies offering coach travel directly from Ireland, we have already received a lot of enquiries”, said Catriona O’Callaghan. For any enquiries or further information on the Lourdes tour, call 064-6631095 or email info@ocallaghancoachholidays.ie

Killarney Advertiser’s resident cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on familiar faces and places

Grace Notes In praise of artists like Ted Jones Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley reflects on the lasting effects artists have on us

“WHO wants to live forever?” In my opinion, every artist can do this. 2016 was a year when the world lost so many great artists, from David Bowie to Leonard Cohen. I was very struck by the fact that fans across the globe grieved the passing of people whom they have probably never even met. An artist can have such a profound and lasting effect on others and perhaps they are not even aware of it. Recently we mourned the loss of the wonderful artist, Ted Jones. Ted Jones captured the imagination and humour of people worldwide. I have always felt that his work has a very broad appeal and is very relatable. His paintings will hang in homes, bars and hotels for years to come. He, like many others, has been immortalised in his creations. As someone who recently created an album I have become very aware of the longevity of everything that we send out into the public domain. I was so

caught up in my own recording bubble that I think I forgot people would actually listen to it! I was extremely protective of my creation up until the point when I had to “let go and let God” and just put it out there for people to make up their own minds about it. To create something like a painting, a song or an album is to put a piece of yourself out into the world. This piece of you will live on, even after you have gone. How many times have we heard that an artist's work is actually far more valuable after they have passed away? This just goes to prove that an artist's creation has the power to reach people forever. This magical power of eternal living is quite amazing. Next time you buy a piece of art, a book or an album, take a moment to think about the fact that you are taking home a little piece of the heart and soul of another person.

Birthday celebration leads to big day out BY EVE KELLIHER

C

UPID’S arrow struck for Orla Coffey and Donal Horgan when Orla was out celebrating her birthday in February 2013 in the Killarney Grand Hotel. Strangely, although Orla, from Scartaglin, and Kilcummin native Donal Horgan lived a mere 10-minute drive away from one another, their paths never crossed before that night. “We had our first date a week later and haven't looked back since,” said Orla. Donal proposed at home on Christmas Eve 2015 and the bride, the daughter of Margaret and Jim Coffey, and groom, the son of the late Eileen and Danny Horgan, were married recently in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kilcummin in a ceremony led by Fr John Lucid, and held their reception in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Photographer Nerijus Karmilcovas of K Photography captured the big day on camera, including a photoshoot at Muckross House and Gardens. Orla’s sister Imelda Coffey lent her support as bridesmaid while Donal’s brother Michael Horgan was best man. The bride looked stunning in a Verise wedding gown and she and Imelda’s hair and makeup were by the team at Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty, Killarney. The church music was by Lily MacMonagle while Donal’s sister Mary of Adam’s Jewellers supplied the rings. The Pat Fitz Wedding Band ensured dancing continued long into the night. “Will King did an amazing job with our wedding cake,” said Orla. “As Donal is a dairy farmer, Will designed a four-tier, dairy farmthemed wedding cake which everyone enjoyed.” Staff and management at the Killarney Avenue Hotel ensured the couple’s celebrations were perfect, from their engagement party in January 2016 to their wedding reception and a party the day after. Guests travelled from across Ireland and beyond for the occasion, with the bride’s sister Molly arriving from Canada especially. “It was a perfect day we will always treasure,” said Orla. The newlyweds, who will reside in Kilcummin, honeymooned in Sydney, Australia.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TACKLE RHODODENDRON? Killarney Advertiser takes an overview of the rhododendron threat and the views that have been aired in recent weeks on how to try to solve the problem

The rhododendron thriving on Shehy Mountain. PICTURE: DONAL WHITTY O'SULLIVAN

latest news | photos | keeping you up to the minute ....

SEEING THE WOOD FOR THE TREES IN JUNE 2014, headlines were sparked across the globe when a couple out walking were trapped by plants for five hours. Sounds like a B-movie hinging on a jungle horror plot, but the facts of the matter were all-to-frighteningly real and close to home: These two experienced hillwalkers were lost in a thick “virtually impenetrable” forest of rhododendron plants in the Knockmealdown Mountains. And rhododendron has also turned traditional walking routes in Killarney into an impenetrable forest. Rhododendron plants are an invasive non-native species that are widespread in Ireland. The species was introduced to the country in the early 19th century as an ornament and as game cover. Killarney National Park has spent hundreds and thousands of euros in an effort to eradicate the “destructive” plant each year. So what’s to be done? Various ideas have been mooted in the past few weeks

‘Nothing short of calling in the Army will suffice’ TOM ROCHE of Just Forests raised a rallying cry in December on the subject of rhododendron, describing the situation as “an ecological disaster” in the first national park to be established in the State. According to Tom: “One of the world’s oldest oak forests is slowly dying. The rhododendron infestation and increased deer population across the region has not been adequately tackled.” The infestation is now out of control, noted Tom. “It is annihilating native flora and preventing new native species of oak, etc, from growing. Nothing short of calling in the Army to break the back of the problem will suffice.” Just Forests has called on the Government to put the necessary financial and legal instruments in place to make the proper removal of rhododendron from every garden, hedgerow, field, forest and woodland in this area compulsory as a matter of urgency. “We are calling for an Invasive Species Action Plan For Kerry & Cork Region,” added Tom. “The objective of the plan is to eradicate rhododendron and control the spread of existing invasive alien species (IAS) and to prevent any new IAS from becoming established in the Kerry/Cork region. “The real value of biodiversity to tourism, agriculture, fisheries and the forestry sectors in Ireland is priceless and beyond question. It is now time to act and give the next generation the security of a functioning and healthy natural world before it’s too late. It is not unusual for small states around the world to deploy their armies to act in the public interest — now is such a time for Ireland.”

Rhododendron cutting in Killarney National Park. PICTURE: DON MACMONAGLE

Significant resources needed to tackle problem RHODODENDRON upsets the natural ecosystem, according to Killarney Advertiser’s science columnist Trevor O’Donoghue. The spread of rhododendron is a significant problem that requires significant resources to solve, he notes. Killarney National Park is known worldwide for its unique and precious habitats and species. “Extensive, mature oak woodlands, yew forests, large stands of holly and the lakes play host to our red deer, wild trout and salmon, biologically significant populations of arbutus, and the Killarney fern and Killarney shad,” he said. “Rhododendron ponticum on the other hand is a nasty, insidious plant, boasting pretty flowers and shiny leaves much beloved by the Victorians. Since its arrival in Killarney, it has spread throughout the park. Its thick growth creates a dense canopy of leaves that can stop other plants from growing and stops these plants and associated animals from thriving, upsetting the natural ecosystem.” But hard work by the staff and volunteers at Killarney National Park can only do so much, notes Trevor. “The spread of rhododendron is a significant problem that requires significant resources to tackle it. A trip through the park will show the extent of the problem,” he said. “Our woodlands are being taken over and unless a serious effort is made to tackle the problem, our national park is under threat.”

‘Solution is local, not global’ WRITING in these pages in the wake of calls by the Irish Wildlife Trust on the United Nations body Unesco – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – to strip the Killarney National Park of its biosphere reserve status, our columnist Anne Lucey noted how locally “the silence is deafening”. She noted: “Maybe the state of the rhododendron, deer mismanagement and upland burning is accepted. Maybe there is a feeling the least said, the better.” Adding that the world biosphere reserve national park is being choked from the ground up, she wrote: “Take a drive along the Kenmare Road, the Mill Road, walk the Queen’s Drive and now the Yew woods near Muckross Abbey, and there is a sea of rhododendron marching on the oaks and the beech and everything else.” In the 1980s regular clean-ups of the National Park included help from the Killarney Girl Guides while families and individuals cut their own path. “There is little point giving out about the NPWS where staff numbers have been cut to shreds. To paraphrase that great green phrase: The solution is local, not global,” added Anne

Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal in action.

A constant battle since the early-1980s THE fight against rhododendron has been “a constant battle since the early ’80s”, according to Donal Whitty O’Sullivan, Killarney. Donal, a volunteer with the Killarney Tidy Towns group Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal, which organises clean-ups in the national park, said: “The rhododendron in my opinion can be very romantic and beautiful in full bloom and when it’s kept under control. But when its gets out of control, it is invasive and destroying our oak wood's and other woodlands. According to some experts, rhododendrons affects approximately two-thirds of the oak woodlands of Killarney.” 20.01.17 Killarney Advertiser

The Provocateur HEAD DOWN AND BARGE LIKE A BULL PULL like a dog became a bit of a mantra among us Irish after the Olympics as the O’Donovan brothers’ charm flowed over the airways. But it was the opposite of charm and good manners that prevailed as the words “head down and barge like a bull” immediately popped into my head on Monday when I had the vexing experience of a fellow motorist cut across me on an otherwise traffic-free Killarney roundabout. Bullish was the only way I could describe his expression as he dipped his head over his steering wheel in determination, clamped his jaw, and bullied his way into my path. I suppose many drivers feel like Don Corleone when they are cocooned in their own cars, whether they are cruising along motorways or negotiating city streets or the highways and byways of towns and villages. But the protective “barriers” are flimsy ones, particularly if you are in the unwelcome position of finding your involved in a crash, however minor. At the other end of the scale, the “barriers” melted away in more welcome fashion last Friday night. Jammed into a parking space in a supermarket car park in Killarney, for once I found it hard to negotiate my escape route, seeing as I was surrounded in front, beside me and behind by giant four-by-fours. Not to forget a random, unpredictable pedestrian who insisted on slowly circling my reversing car while she smoked her cigarette and chatted on her mobile phone, all the while gawping in the windows of my car. As if it wasn’t enough of an obstacle course. Immediately a lady (in the true sense of the word) who was loading her groceries into the boot of her own car arrived over, tapped on the window and asked if I wanted help. She swiftly and superefficiently proceeded to give the best directions I have ever received from anyone, to help me manoeuvre my way out of the trap. Good manners, charm and random acts of kindness are still in vogue among some, thank goodness! Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? AAWEEKLY WEEKLYROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + CHARITY BOSS HITS BACK AT RTÉ CLAIMS THE founder of Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (AHAR), Suzanne Gibbons, has defended AHAR’s standards of governance after an RTÉ investigation suggested issues with its bookkeeping and financial transparency. AHAR operates a rescue centre for animals in Castleisland, mostly taking in dogs and horses. The charity was the subject of the investigation shown on Monday night’s Claire Byrne Live show. In a statement on Tuesday the charity said it fully supports prope r

governance and procedures in charities, and had “already identified failings with committee paperwork in the past”. “We admit having difficulties with former treasurers and committee members who failed to implement the proper procedures, but this has been addressed since 2016,” stated AHAR’s executive committee. “We are presently working on the recommendations made by the Charities Regulatory Authority and are confident we can satisfy them all.” The charity added it would be releasing a further statement addressing the specific allegations made against it and “addressing the facts RTÉ deliberately omitted and other inaccu-

racies contained in the programme”. Ms Gibbons also stated: “I deeply respect every cent or penny donated. Every cent means the start of a new life for the most important souls in all this. The animals.” AHAR is “a tremendous success story for all concerned”, she noted. “Especially our army too, but most of all for all the souls we have saved. I have fallen down in certain areas for not seeking expert advice at the right time of by not diverting funds raised away from the animals to administration of AHAR, including committee meetings.” AHAR had previously claimed to be a “completely volunteer-run” organisation, but later admitted paying a salary to its founder Suzanne Gibbons. While there was no indication any money had been misappropriated, analysis of its bank accounts in the RTÉ investigation showed large cash withdrawals and donations of around €1 million over two years. Killarney students show community spirit

THE big-hearted Leaving Certificate Applied Students from Killarney Community College took time out from their studies and braved the elements to fundraise for the Irish Cancer Society prior to

the Christmas holidays. During the week, the students thanked the generous people of Killarney for the great support they received on the day. The students along with their teacher John Keane,

principal Stella Loughnane and deputy principal Eilish O’Leary presented a cheque for €2,423 to Eugene O’Sullivan and Eleanor O’Doherty of the Irish Cancer Society.

VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRYAND ANDAROUND AROUNDTHE THEWORLD WORLD VIEWS THE WINTER NIGHT SKY IS A GLORIOUS SIGHT The winter sky is dominated by the imposing constellation Orion the hunter, says Trevor O’Donoghue THE prominent constellation of Orion the hunter and its bright stars act as stellar signposts helping us navigate the winter sky. Look high in the south at 9pm or 10pm and a distinct line of three stars can be found. These stars make up the belt of Orion. Draw an imaginary line through these stars and extend it off to the left and you will arrive at the brightest star in the sky, Sirius the Dog Star. This star also happens to be one of the closest stars to the earth located at a distance of 8.5 light years. Many people believe that it is the North Star that is the brightest star in the sky, but Sirius has the honour. The North Star is doesn’t appear that bright at all. Back to Orion’s belt again and now look just above and to the left. Here we find a bright red/orange star called Betelgeuse. This star is at the end of its life, having almost completely burnt all of its fuel. It is in its death throes and any time soon (or in a few thousand years, no-one knows exactly when) it will explode in a massive supernova, blowing itself to bits and lighting up the night sky. Back to Orion’s belt again, and this time just look underneath where you will see a few faint stars and a faint fuzzy patch

Michael Flatley to perform at Trump inauguration

in between. This fuzzy patch is a stellar nursery and is known as the great Orion nebula. Here, new stars are being born out of clouds of hot gas and dust. If you have a set of binoculars, pull them out as have a look at this through them. It’s not something you will forget in a hurry. Finally, back to those three stars of Orion’s belt again and now extend the imaginary line off to the right until you reach a bright star at the tip of a V shape of stars. This star is called Aldebaran and is in the constellation of Taurus the bull. Keep extending the line and you will reach a small tight star cluster known as the seven sisters. You can see these without optical aid, but the view through binoculars is breathtaking.

TMZ has reported that Flatley and his troupe are the latest act to be added to Friday night’s Liberty Ball lineup. The list includes country music sing er Toby Keith, Jon Voight, 3 Doors Dow n, 10 of the 13 Radio City Rockettes, The Fron tmen of Country, Lee Greenwood, The Pian o Guys, Jackie Evancho and DJ Ravi Drum s. Artists who refused to perform included Charlotte Church, Elton John Celin e Dion, Garth Brooks, Rebecca Ferg uson and Andrea Bocelli. • Get yourself a top-class professional CV

An obvious one, but a prerequisite nevertheless. Send your CV to chris@ workingforyou.ie if you would like an impartial, honest and above all FREE review of your current CV. You are under no obligation to proceed with a CV design by availing of a free CV review.

• Be LinkedIn

LinkedIn is likely to be the first website a recruiter refers to when researching you beyond consideration of your CV. You need an online presence to achieve your resolution, so make sure you’re well connected and your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. In addition, LinkedIn’s excellent Jobs section must be explored if you are serious about achieving your goal. We can help if you need any assistance in creating a LinkedIn profile.

Killarney Advertiser 20.01.17

• Do the simple things

Make your online job search work for you by creating relevant job alerts on good job websites like Indeed and Irishjobs. Also, don’t forget the importance of tapping up your social networks (both in real-life and online) for job leads.

• Put yourself out there

Don’t just wait for the job to fall on your lap, make efforts to bring it to you. Speculative job applications have a higher rate of success than those submitted in response to an advertised vacancy. Identify who you would like to work for and approach them directly in a polite and considered manner.

Happy hunting! www.workingforyou.ie

Garden Magic Colouring in

As the days are getting longer, we are seeing more and more colours in the garden, says Debby Looney

PRIMROSES are the joy of spring, and these dry days are exactly what they love. I came across a new variety the other day, it sells under the name PrimaSan. A Mr Matsunaga has dedicated 40 years of his life to bring us a stunning new variety all the way from Japan. The buds look like rosebuds, and they open into a beautiful large bloom. Naturally one came home with me. When you are changing your winter pots, always replant your primroses. No matter how tired they look, they will show themselves next year in the most unexpected spots… if like me, you forget where you put them! Two plants which are at their best now are Viburnum bodnantense Dawn and Garrya Elliptica. Viburnum bodnantense Dawn has the sweetest smelling, waxy, pale pink flowers, which come out before the leaves. If you have one, and the flowers don’t look great, blame the birds, as they love them! Garrya Elliptica is a very robust evergreen, with tassels at this time of year which are almost six inches long.

If you are planning out a vegetable garden, I would wholeheartedly recommend creating an asparagus bed, and a patch for Jerusalem artichokes. It is a shame that the vast majority of the asparagus we enjoy comes from Peru, while it is a fairly easy crop to grow at home. It requires a sunny, and well-drained site. It is not a crop which you will be rotating, so the work you put in, only needs to be done once! It will be two-three years before you have a substantial crop, but the great thing is that it freezes well once you do. I have only just taken up the last of my Jerusalem artichokes, they are a great winter crop. They are not a well-known veg, but are becoming more popular due to their nutritional value. The tubers can be eaten raw, roasted or steamed, and they are the easiest crop to grow. Plant them near the edge of your veg garden, where they will not cast too much shadow, as the plants grow up to 8ft tall. Both asparagus crowns, and Jerusalem artichoke tubers are currently available for planting.

Meeke and Nagle kick off their World Rally Championship bid this weekend THE wait is over for Irish rally fans and rally fans in general. The 2017 season sees the biggest shake-up in many years with the shock departure of VW, the current World Champion on the open market, Toyota returning to the WRC after a 17 year break, new regulations producing fantastic looking cars and an Irish line up not seen before with Paul Nagle, Kris Meeke and Craig Breen in a full works programme with Citroen and to make it even more interesting, this year’s sea-

son opener has many new stages. Friday is the longest day with more stages on Saturday before Sunday's final leg that includes the renowned Col de Turini, where ice and snow can cause problems, this legendary mountain pass defined by hairpins and sheer drops near Sospel. Sebastien Ogier (pictured) and M-Sport partnership got off to a great start setting the pace in the new-look Fiesta on the 3.35km 'shakedown' over mountain roads around the town of Gap in

southern France on Wednesday. Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen was second fastest in a Skoda Fabia and Ogier's Estonian teammate Ott Tanak was third. Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala was fourth ahead of Toyota's return to the championship after a 17-year absence. Citroen was not sighted in the top 10 as the team deliberately opted to run on slick tyres in order to save its winter tyres for the special stages.

AT A recent meeting of Killarney Environs Protection Group, congratulations were extended for all the superb accolades recently received and much gratitude was extended to all the voluntary groups in the town that helped in the success of Killarney – a few that came to mind were the Meitheal Group, Tidy Towns and Chamber of Commerce. We have come a long way in a very short time and the outlook is looking very good for the future. Patsy Hanley. However, for the enjoyment of all, we must be careful that the tourism is sustainable, that the traffic is manageable and that we provide adequate car parks. We must also make sure that the town isn’t choked at peak times as was stated by a concerned guest speaker at a recent tourism forum. We must take the good comments with the bad and public parking outside every small residential area is not fair. Also newly designated car parking on the New Road is both dangerous to the hundreds of schoolchildren using same and for those emerging from St Mary’s Terrace, the view of oncoming traffic, from the right has been taken – thus making the situation very dangerous here. With all the goodwill in the town, it is hoped that these matters will be looked into. Again, congratulations to all. Patsy Hanley, Chairman, Killarney Environs Protection Group, Killarney

‘The Government needs to realise the value of Killarney National Park’ I WOULD like to comment on Anne Lucey’s excellent article, "Call for Killarney National Park to lose 'biosphere’ status”, in last week’s issue. I would agree with much, but not all, of what Anne had to say. Killarney National Park has serious problems. The number of deer in Knockreer Estate (opposite St Mary’s Cathedral) seems to have quadrupled in recent years. These days it’s not uncommon to see over 100 deer in one field. While we all like to see deer when we walk in the Park, the over-population is causing havoc in the woodlands. The introduction of rhododendron ponticum here in the 1800s was an ecological disaster. As Anne rightly points out in her article, it has reached alarming proportions. The Park hosts the last of Ireland’s oakwoods, one of only three major yew woods in Europe and rare wet woodlands. These are all under threat. Rhododendron never sleeps and it requires a constant battle to save these woods.

The problems in the Park are not helped by the over 50% reduction in the number of park rangers. The skeleton staff that remains cannot be expected to properly oversee 25,000 acres. However, when these issues are raised with the authorities, the common reply seems to be “we don’t have the money”. Anne in her article suggests a 50 cent charge for “people who take jaunting car trips in the Park, who take boat trips, who sleep in beds and eat in restaurants, take part in charity runs, cycle tours and walking tours, to go directly to the Park”. While I don’t have a problem with commercial operators in the park having to make a contribution to its maintenance costs, I would not like to see individual visitors being charged. The National Park is there for everyone to enjoy, welcoming all, from kings to paupers. I remember when there was an entrance charge for visitors at the gates of Knockreer Estate. Our parents and grandparents remember a time when these estates were walled and there was no access. What

we have here in Killarney is very precious. To me, shortage of money is not the issue, it’s a question of priorities. As long as there’s €80 million to be wasted on consultants for Irish Water, €300+ million wasted on tribunals, hundreds of millions written off by NAMA for developers, money is not a problem. The Government needs to realise the value of Killarney National Park to the people of Ireland, and to appreciate the millions it has received in taxes as a direct result of the visitors it attracts from all over the world. I can appreciate where the Irish Wildlife Trust are coming from when they say that Killarney National Park should lose it’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status due to the problems in relation to deer, rhododendron etc but let’s not be flippant about this. To have our National Park in the same category as Madagascar and Yellowstone National Park is a great honour. I would ask the government to give Killarney National Park the recognition it deserves. Let’s all take an interest in this, make sure that the problems in the Park are tackled and that it deservedly retains its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. Kevin Tarrant, 3 Castlerosse Cottages, St Mary’s Road,

MURPHY Birthday remembrance of our son Damian O’Shea, Oak Hill and formerly St. Brendan’s Terrace, whose tenth birthday away from home occurs on the 25th of January 2017.

Leave my body wherever it may lie, but remember my soul at the alter of the Lord The twenty first of January, two thousand and eight, A date in our memories we’ll never forget A son, a brother, a true friend. You fought so bravely to the very end Though it was in Cork that you passed away, A Kerry man to the bone until your dying day. When we’re feeling down or a little bit blue, We’ll just close our eyes and think of you We’ll hear you in each wind that blows Or in the fall of each December snow A true gentleman you made no fuss It was Johnny time, no need to rush Now he’s playing with angels in heaven up above We’ll keep our special memories And treasure them with love The month’s stretch on before us So bleak and so long We pray you’ll walk beside us, help to keep us strong, And when our life is over, come to us that day, Come smiling towards us and carry us away And now the time has come, to say our last goodbye, But we’ll always remember you, the apple of our eye We’ll go the rest of our lives and never again will see A beautiful gentleman, our one and only Johnny. Sadly Missed by the Friends of Johnny.

Your special day approaches A memory to hold dear But a special person’s missing How we wish that you were here It’s hard to hide the sadness But it’s something we must do Because of all the gifts in life However big or small We were privileged to have you as our son This was the greatest gift of all. Loved and remembered everyday from all your family with all our love. xxxxxx

Killarney Celtic boss hails ‘brave’ players Brian Spillane’s side seal passage to the last 16 with an historic win in the FAI Junior Cup, writes Adam Moynihan KILLARNEY CELTIC have booked their place in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup following a remarkable victory over Newmarket Celtic in Clare on Sunday. Kerry teams seldom make it beyond the last 32 in junior soccer’s showpiece competition (Celtic last made it this far thirty years ago) and manager Brian Spillane believes his players’ willingness to play possession football was pivotal to their success. “When you come up against the top teams you have to be brave,” he said. “You have to be able to play soccer. When it was 2-2 we were keeping the ball, we were working triangles, and even when we went 3-2 up with four minutes to go we were still holding onto the ball. There was loads of confidence in the team. We were very brave.” In a pulsating tie that ebbed and flowed, the boys from Killarney showed great character to come from

behind and eventually overcome very strong and highly fancied opposition in Clare champions Newmarket. Spillane certainly wasn’t thrilled when their name came out of the hat. “Before the draw was made Newmarket were one of the teams I just didn’t want to play. Especially away from home - I don’t think they had been beaten there in three years - so I knew it’d be a tough task.” Indeed Celtic were 11/2 outsiders to prevail on the day and any brave Killarney punters would have feared the worst when Newmarket took a first half lead through Paddy Purcell, the former League of Ireland centre half heading home from a corner. Celtic responded well, however, and they found themselves on level terms shortly after, last season’s Player of the Year Wayne Sparling latching on to Cathal O’Shea’s pass before firing coolly beyond the home keeper.

It didn’t take long for Sparling to double his tally. This time Gary Keane provided the assist for the talented forward w h o broke free of the Newmarket defence and lobbed the keeper from outside the box. A controversial incident ten minutes before half time led to a double red card when Celtic striker Cathal O’Shea apparently got involved in a bust up of sorts with a Newmarket defender. Both players received their marching orders so Celtic will have to plan for the next round without O'Shea and also left back Brendan Falvey who broke his hand during the game. Confidence was high after the restart but Celtic suffered a major setback on the hour mark when Newmarket were awarded a questionable penalty. Star striker Eoin Hayes duly converted and the sides were level once more. With the game deadlocked at 2-2 and the final whistle fast approaching it appeared as though extra time was on the cards – but there was still time for

The Killarney Celtic team that triumphed over Newmarket Celtic.

one final twist. Substitute Conor Randall's corner was cleared but the ball made its way back out to him on the wing. At the second time of asking his cross found right back Chris O’Leary who rose highest to head Celtic into the last 16 and send the travelling support into raptures. Spillane felt those away fans were crucial. “They made a big difference. There were a lot of old heads on the sideline, guys like Frankie Roberts, the two Huggards, Ray Hoctor, Pat O’Neill, Karl McMahon, Noel Brosnan… All the players have huge respect for these fellas and when you see them on the line it raises it another level. Altogether there were about eighty supporters. It was fantastic.” Celtic can now look forward to the draw for the last 16 and the manager is clear on what they want. “We’ll be looking for a home draw and then try to get to a quarter final,” Spillane said. “The way we’re playing this year and the confidence we have at the moment it’s going to take a good team to knock us out.” Celtic (4-2-3-1): Roy Kelliher; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Brendan Falvey; Gary Keane, Pa McGrath; Wayne Sparling, Matt Keane, Stephen Hayes; Cathal O’Shea. Subs: Peter McCarthy (for Falvey), Conor Randall (for McGrath), Connall Murphy (for Sparling).

Smalltalk

Spa footballer Cassandra Buckley talks to Adam Moynihan about a mixed year with Kerry, teammates on Tinder and transfers

A: How would you rate 2016 out of ten? C: We had a good league campaign with Kerry and were unlucky to lose to Mayo in the semis. A personal highlight was captaining the side for two matches. The championship was disappointing but overall I’d give it a seven. A: What are your goals for next season? C: Well I’m taking a step back from Kerry this year - I’ve been there since 2006 - so I’d like to wish the girls all the best of luck. Personally I’m looking forward to going back playing club football. A: Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? C: Amanda Brosnan. She’d probably talk me into another off-season trip to Tenerife. A: Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? C: It was often discussed on the bus trips with Kerry, either to swipe left or right, but what happens on the bus, stays on the bus. I can’t name names! A: Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? C: I have to pick a club teammate, although she also played with me for Kerry, Katie Gleeson. Top-class defender. A: Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? C: Bernie Breen. She never stops running. A: Who’ll be the next players from Spa to play for Kerry? C: Ciara Moynihan and Mairead Bennett. A: Who’ll be the next Kerry player to get an All-Star? C: Louise Ní Muircheartaigh. A: If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? C: Well I’ve already been to a few clubs! [laughs] So I think I’d have to retire before I transfer again. A: If you had to play for another county, who would it be? C: It’s hard to look past Cork with the success they’ve had but I couldn’t pick them because of the rivalry, so Limerick. A: What’s your proudest sporting moment? C: In football, beating Cork in the Munster Final in 2015. In basketball, winning our first National Cup with St Paul’s U-19. A: What’s your most embarrassing sporting moment? C: There’s probably been a few but just being clumsy and tripping over myself with no one around! A: Who’s your favourite sportsperson outside of football? C: I’m going to keep it local and say Lynn Jones. Top-class basketballer.

A: If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, who would they be? C: The Olympic rowing brothers, Gary and Paul O’Donovan, and Jessica Ennis. A: Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? C: Tennis. A: What’s your least favourite sport? C: Fishing. Is it even a sport? A: What’s your favourite-ever sporting moment? C: Katie Taylor winning gold at the Olympics. A: Do you have any nicknames? C: Just "Cass". A: Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? C: Probably Facebook. A: What’s your favourite emoji? C:

A: What’s the best show on TV? C: Red Rock. A: What’s your favourite song at the moment? C: Picture This - Take My Hand. A: What’s your go-to number when a singsong kicks off? C: I’d usually shy away from a singsong but I’m good for a nursery rhyme or two in school. A: Who’s the most famous person in your phone? C: Mary Jo Curran but Mags Cronin is up there now with her debut in Strictly Come Dancing just around the corner. A: What would you have for your last meal? C: Granda Buckley’s bacon and cabbage with brown sauce. A: Where’s the best food in town? C: Tough choice but I’d probably say the Porterhouse. A: Who would play you in a movie about your life? C: I’d have to pick my favourite actress, Sandra Bullock. I’m being a bit generous to myself but… A: Can you tell me a joke? C: Oh God. Why did Paddy Irishman get fired from the pasta factory? A: Why? C: Fusilli mistakes. A: It took me a second but I got there. That was great, thanks! C: No problem!

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

East Kerry team that won first-ever All-Ireland SFC club title Eamonn Fitzgerald casts an eye back to 1971 to review the first senior club competition SEVERAL readers of this column have asked me to outline the East Kerry team that won the first-ever All Ireland SFC club title in 1971. Here it is, as

taken from the official match programme. The team was Eamonn Fitzgerald, Donie O’Sullivan, Derry Crowley, Jim Gleeson, Gerald Cullinane,

Rugby news & views with Liam Murphy ANOTHER step forward for most of the provinces in the European Champions Cup last weekend, as Connacht and Leinster registered two home wins, albeit against very poor opposition. Clocking up an average of 62 points each, these matches were a mere runout for these teams as they all but qualified for the quarter-finals. Ulster lost to Exeter last Sunday, which effectively sees them crash out of the Champions Cup after a very poor campaign. Munster on the other hand had it much tougher, with a trip to face Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun on the cards for Rassie’s men. The Red Army travelled in force. A tough encounter ensued as Glasgow were certainly not showing too much respect to Munster. Finn Russell had a good game for the home side and looks a shoe in for the Lion’s Tour to New Zealand in the summer. He kicked a penalty to put the Scots in front with only 12 minutes on the clock. A high tackle gave Munster the chance to even the scores. Stuart Hogg had an excellent game and kicked well. Penalties were exchanged and finally Hogg was sin binned for another high tackle by the home side, giving Munster the chance to push on, and Saili duly obliged with the game’s only try. In all it was a strange game. The booing is something you just don’t hear at Thomond Park. Conor Murray was clearly targeted by the home side, duly seen as the biggest threat. However, a win is a win. Next weekend it’s Racing 92 at Thomond Park, a game that looks certain to be another sellout. Closer to home, our Seniors earned a great team victory over Douglas/Carrigaline in the Munster Junior league in front of a bumper home crowd at Aghadoe. Ger Moynihan’s charges welcomed back players from injury and with Damien Carroll, Paudie Sheahan and Ollie O’Neill scoring tries, the result was never in doubt. A fantastic win for the men in Red and Black. Next weekend it’s a trip to Bantry for the lads and hopefully another win in the league!

Killarney Advertiser 20.01.17

4-5 Eire Óg, Carlow 0-11. 1971 was the first year of the senior club competition, but there were provincial championships played for some years before that. The Andy Merrigan Cup was presented by his Castletown club in memory of the great Wexford man. A new ruling came out after the 1971 final that divisional board teams were no longer eligible to compete in the provincial and All-Ireland series. During his tenure as President of the GAA Seán Kelly extended the club All-Ireland series to intermediate and to junior ranks. This was a wonderful initiative by Seán as any club, irrespective of its status can now bid for All-Ireland glory.

Kerry GAA Club Forum takes centre stage this weekend Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary gives an overview of the weekend in sport

THE Kerry GAA Club Forum takes centre stage this weekend at the Rose Hotel Tralee. There is little doubt that the club structure is the most important unit within the GAA – without the clubs there would be no players and consequently no GAA. Therefore, it goes without saying that it is vitally important that the views of the people running these clubs are aired and that cognisance is taken of their views and opinions. During the winter months, the plight of the clubs and their players has been highlighted and debated at a national level as never before and we have seen increased funding for the Gaelic Players Association, and more recently we have seen the advent of the Club Players Association. There are fierce challenges facing the clubs of this and any other county you wish to mention so there has probably never been a more appropriate time to act in relation to clubs, the issues facing them and their requirements. In a big county with such a diverse geographical spread as Kerry has, clubs are facing different challenges. Rural de-population is a major issue for clubs especially on our south-westerly seaboard and by the same token, the migration of families to urban areas is posing problems of quite a different nature for clubs in those areas. Coping with the ever-increasing financial burden on all clubs is an age-old problem while acquiring volunteers for the various tasks associated with running clubs is an issue that is becoming a major problem in all clubs. These of course are but a few of the challenges facing clubs and no doubt, by close of business on Saturday many more important issues will have been highlighted. Each club is requested to have four members present. It is imperative that the chairman and secretary of each club is present together with two more members and ideally one of these should be from the Juvenile section of the club. Saturday’s event will mark the first important step in in the development of a strategic plan

Islam Slimani (Leicester City), Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City), Sofiane Féghouli (West Ham) and Adlène Guédioura (Watford).

Noel Power, Jerh O’Donoghue, Pat Moynihan, Pat Casey, Paddy O’Donoghue, Dan O’Keeffe, Dinny Healy, Denis Coffey, Mick Gleeson (captain), Donal Kavanagh; subs, Weeshie Fogarty, Mikey Lyne, Jimmy Hegarty, Tom Looney, Johnny Cronin and Johnny O’Mahony. The selectors were Donie Sheahan (team trainer), Donie O’Leary, Brendan Walshe, and Denis Fenton. The final score was East Kerry 5-9, Bryansford (County Down champions) 2-7. Other Kerry senior club winners were as follows: 1976, Austin Stacks 1-13 Ballerin, Derry 2-7; 1985, Desmonds 2-2 St Vincent’s, Dublin 0-7; 1992, Dr Crokes 1-11 Thomas Davis, Dublin 0-13; and 1996, Laune Rangers

that will bring Kerry GAA into the next decade. The forum commences at 10:30 and finishes at 4pm.

KERRY QUALIFY FOR THE MCGRATH CUP FINAL

Kerry qualified for the McGrath Cup final following a deserved 1-13 to 1-9 victory over Cork in Mallow on Sunday last. Kerry, with Jack Savage in fine form, led by 1-8 to 0-5 at the break, the penalty goal coming from James O’Donoghue and despite Cork getting a goal of their own during the second half, Kerry retained their advantage and ran out deserving winners. Kerry now meet Limerick in the final on Sunday next at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. The venue was decided on the toss of a coin. A double bill at the Gaelic Grounds will also see Kerry hurlers take on Limerick in the CoOpSuperstores.ie Munster Senior Hurling League in the opening game at 1pm followed by the McGrath Cup final at 3pm.

KERRY GAA SUPPORTERS CLUB ANNUAL SOCIAL

The Kerry GAA Supporters Club Annual Social will take place on Saturday, January 28, at Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee. Guests of honour on the night are each football legends in their own rights in the persons of Darragh, Tomás and Marc Ó Sé. These three remarkable footballers have won everything possible in the game bot as individuals and as a group. The have played and won together and now they are being honoured together by the Kerry Supporters. Other guests will include minor football winning captain Sean O’Shea, minor hurling captain Shane Conway, junior football captain Paul O’Donoghue along with the respective team managers and 2016 All-Star, Paul Geaney. Music is by Neily O’Connor. Tickets are available from club members.

Killarney RFC News

U14’S On Saturday last the U14 travelled to Tralee in the next round of the U14 West Munster League looking to maintain the current unbeaten run. Tralee were excellent hosts and facilitated the game being played on their excellent top pitch with is sand based and was exceptionally dry underfoot. The second half saw additional tries from a range of forwards and backs with some really intelligent plays some straight from the training ground which did give the head coach a lot to smile about. Next up is a trip away to Abbeyfeale on Sunday 22nd Jan. U16’S Last Saturday the U16’s travelled to Cork to take on Dolphin RFC, in the next round of the Munster U16 Bowl competition. The lads fought bravely but lost a player to injury, forcing the remaining 14 lads to take on the challenge. Well done to Tom Campbell and his brave U16 as well as the many parents who travelled to Cork for this match. Next weekend it’s another road trip for the lads as they travel to Douglas for the next round of the competition. round of the Munster Junior League. Ger Moynihan’s charges were hoping to build on from the previous week’s win over Killorglin and certainly did not disappoint the bumper home crowd.Following some fantastic phases of play in the latter stages of the first half, Damien Carroll crossed the line for our first try, which Paudie Sheahan converted. The pack were strong all day with stalwarts Peter Kelly and Ollie O’Neill leading from the front. With only a few minutes to go, Ollie scored the home side’s final try to send the game beyond doubt. 22 - 5 was the final score, in a match where everyone worked hard and the subs bench was used to good effect. Stand out players on the day were Paul O’Sullivan, Paudie Sheahan and Connie O’Leary was the man of the match with another storming display. Next Sunday the lads travel to Bantry in the next round of the league. Kick off is at 2:30pm.

Killarney Celtic FC

CONDOLENCES It may have been a good week for the club on the playing fields, but off it we had terrible news when it emerged that Terence Moriarty, a hugely popular Killarney Celtic and community figure, sadly passed away. Terence encouraged and coached many young players at Killarney Celtic, including but not only his own sons, and Killarney Celtic were proud to form a Guard of Honour at his funeral. May he rest in peace and love forever. JUVENILE NATIONAL CUP DRAWS Killarney Celtic U15s have been drawn at home to Ferrybank of Waterford and our U12s have been drawn at home to Carndonough of Donegal. Both of these games will take place at the end of January in Celtic Park. RESULTS FAI JUNIOR CUP: KILLARNEY CELTIC REACH LAST 16 KILLARNEY CELTIC 3 NEWMARKET CELTIC 2 A huge and cheerful Killarney Celtic contingent made their way to McDonagh Park in Clare to take on the home side in a real winner-takes-all roller coaster. Brendan Falvey and Cathal O’Shea cut open Newmarket’s defence and Wayne Sparling, who was superb all through, was never going to refuse an invitation like that! Wayne struck again in the 39th minute and Celtic took a lead into the second half. Make no mistake, though, Newmarket are a very good side and they came back with a penalty. 2 all. Killarney Celtic had the legs though and were dominating late in the game, with Conor Randall sending a great cross. Superb game; superb moment in our club’s history. U16 Premier: Killarney Celtic 0 Park 2 Irish international Sean McGrath scored for Jordan Barry added another to give Park victory, but Celtic can be proud of the battle they put up. U15 SFAI Regional Final: Nenagh 0 Killarney Celtic 3 Killarney Celtic were in action in the new Skechers Regionals and in the 15’s they progressed to the semi-finals where they are at home to Limerick FC. Celtic were 3-0 winners away to Nenagh to reach the Regional last 4, and are of course also in the Last 32 of the National Cup. In Nenagh the damage was done in the first half when Jack O’Connor scored twice for Celtic and Jason Kerins once to see the Hoops lead 3-0 at the break. Killarney Celtic controlled the game to book a home tie in the semi-finals. U15 Div Two: Park C 2 Killarney Celtic B 8 Celtic defeated Park C thanks to goals

from Harry Buckley, Cian Doe, Adam Keane, Tom Doyle, Roy Hurley, Casper Prusak, Owen Walsh and Tyrese Coffey. U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic 7 Castleisland 0. Senan O’Leary was on the end of a great team move for the second. John Kelliher scored from a well-worked corner and Cian McAuliffe hit a superb shot for the fourth. William Harty skillfully tucked away on the break as Castleisland tried to push forward. John Kelliher scored from a direct free kick and Pedro Alonso scored on his debut. A great industrious display all round, with Calum O’Grady outstanding and Timothy Moynihan, Robert Brooks, and Jack O’Neill in top form. U13 Div Two: Killarney Celtic B 4 Inter Kenmare 2 Killarney Celtic B had goals from Gary Wynne, Jim O’Brien, Jack O’Sullivan and Martin O’Brien as they defeated Inter Kenmare 4-2. We are now four points clear at the top but second placed Ballyheigue have a game in hand. U12 Div One: Fenit Samphires 0 Killarney Celtic 1 Nacho Zulategui kept up his striking record with the crucial goal to give Celtic all three points.

David addressed the young footballers encouraging them to ‘stick together and keep it going’ He recalled the many great times he has had through football with his club - training sessions, playing games and travelling to and from games etc. Tommy and David are both great ambassadors for ‘sticking with it’. Both have been very unfortunate with injuries but their resilience determination and dedication has ensured that they continue to play this great game. After the medal presentation, the boys posed for photographs and signed autographs for their many excited fans. Basketball News by Eamonn Keogh

THE St Paul’s U-12 Division 2 boys team hosted St Brendan’s of Tralee last Friday evening in the Killarney Sports Centre. St Paul’s got off to a rocky start, only scoring one basket in the first quarter, and three baskets in the second. It wasn't until the third quarter that St Paul’s pulled away from St Brendan’s, scoring an impressive 12 points, proving that they were worthy of the victory. From this point on, St Paul’s were able to hold on to the lead until the end. The final score was St Paul's 24, St Brendan's 19. Team: Dara O'Shea, Tim Moynihan 2, TJ O'Sullivan, Jack O'Sullivan 2, Gearoid Healy, Tim McClaine, Darragh O'Connell, Mark Sheehan 2, Robbie Harnett, Shane O'Donoghue 2, Eoghan Crowley 14, Sam Norton, Luke O'Neil. St Paul's U-11 girls were defeated in the cup final last weekend. They put a great display and did the club very proud. Well done to coach Anne Moynihan and her squad. They are top of league table at the moment and hopefully they can stay there until the end of the season.

FLASHBACK

1996: On Saturday January 20, 1996, Kerry Spring defeated Killester 106-95 in a superleague men's clash in Clontarf, Dublin. The Killarney side led 51-

48 at half-time and extended their advantage to 16 points at one stage before winning by nine in t h e end. Top scorers for Kerry Spring St Paul's were: Greg Ford 37, Vince Daly 21, Corey Jackson 20, Cormac O'Donoghue 10 and Brian Clarke 9. 1991: On Wednesday, January 16, 1991, St Paul's senior ladies team and men’s division two team travelled to Dingle for a double-header fixture. The ladies had a particularly strong team during this era and were coached by the late Donal O'Doherty. Against Dingle, they enjoyed a runaway 52-18 victory with Trish O'Halloran (11), Anne Cashman (9), Tracey O'Shea (8) and Paulette O'Shea (8) leading the way. The St Paul's men’s division two team also enjoyed success in the other match defeating Dingle 57-45. Top scorers were Seanie O'Shea (16), John Buckley (14), Der Brosnan (12) and Gearoid Cronin (12). The double celebration continued long into the night in Dingle and some "persuasive" members of the men’s team and their supporters managed to convince the bus driver to take a "detour" back to Paidi O Se's pub in Ventry for one quick stop before heading home. Historians will remember that January 16 and the early hours of January 17th 1991 was the date that US President George H. W. Bush announced the start of the air campaign of the Gulf War with an extensive aerial bombing campaign. In Baghdad, Saddam Hussein said the "mother of all battles had begun". Dramatic footage and news coverage of the event was beamed worldwide in the early hours of January 17, 1991. With the late Paidi O Se flicking through he news channels for up to the minute coverage, his bar full of basketball players and supporters were in no hurry to get home!
