Why Planning Ahead Is A Joy Rather Than A Chore For Three Kerry Families IN THE lead-up to Organ Donor Awareness Week, I met three inspirational local people who underwent life-saving kidney transplant operations. All spoke of how they and their families are now able to plan ahead and enjoy life. As they launched this year’s campaign, spearheaded by the Irish Kidney Association, they joined forces in Killarney with Kerry GAA legend and newly crowned Dancing with the Stars winner Aidan O’Mahony to send out a message to carry an organ donor card (see our story in this week’s edition). Overall, 280 organ transplants were carried out during 2016. This marks the second highest yearly performance achieved, with an average rate of 23 transplants per month. The Irish Kidney Association’s Organ Donor Awareness Week 2017 will take place from tomorrow, April 1, until April 8. The main focus of the campaign is to continue to remind the Irish public to have the important family discussion about their wishes concerning deceased organ donation. This weekend also sees Killarney’s quiz whizzes em-

bark on a quest for the national Credit Union school quiz title. Killarney Advertiser wishes the team from Gaelscoil Faithleann the very best in the final, which takes place in the RDS Dublin on Sunday. Best of luck also to reigning All-Ireland champions St Brendan’s College who are defending their title in the Hogan Cup final tomorrow; see Killarney Advertiser’s sport section for previews of the big game. Again on the sports front, the excitement following Dr Crokes’ epic All-Ireland victory last week continues to lift spirits in the town. Why not call into our office to pick up our celebratory poster. And kudos to Killarney Celtic which has unleashed a powerful campaign ahead of the club’s historic FAI Junior Cup semi-final against Sheriff FC. The progressive club has enlisted the support of none other than Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill, who has expressed his admiration for Killarney Celtic in a video posted to the club’s Facebook page. Changing Of The Guard At Kerry Branch Of Irish Hotels Federation EVERY good wish to Patrick O’Donoghue as he takes the helm as chairman of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation. Mr O’Donoghue, managing director of The Gleneagle Group, follows in the footsteps of outgoing chairman Terence Mulcahy, of the International Hotel. The changing of the guard took place on Tuesday after Mr O’Donoghue was elected to the position at the annual general meeting of the Kerry branch of the IHF. Mr O’Donoghue leads one of Ireland’s most successful hotel groups, which in Killarney alone incorporates The Gleneagle Hotel, The Brehon and Scott’s Hotel as well as the INEC, Killarney. “I am honoured to be elected chairman of the Kerry Branch of the IHF. It is one of the most progressive and effective branches in the country and I look forward to representing our members from throughout Kerry in the weeks and months ahead,” Mr O’Donoghue said. A driving force in the tourism industry, Mr O’Donoghue is also a former director of Bord Fáilte and spearheads key tourism events in Killarney, including The Gathering, the annual BikeFest, FolkFest and BeerFest as well as numerous conferences.

Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, who was from Killarney, was dubbed the Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican, and was instrumental in saving the lives of more than 6,500 people during World War Two, applying his own simple yet profound belief that “God Has No Country”. Nominations in no more than 500 words should be submitted in writing to the awards committee at Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society, c/o Killarney Chamber of Commerce, 2nd Floor TIO Building,

THE Ring of Kerry Charity has now received almost 8,000 entries. However there are still places available for those looking to take part on Saturday, July 1. The event, now in its 34th year, is the biggest one-day charity fundraising event in Ireland, attracting over 10,000 leisure cyclists, completing the 112-mile challenge across the spectacular Ring of Kerry, while at the same time fundraising for worthy charities. “There has a brilliant response to the beneficiary charities involved in the cycle this year, with the Temple Street Foundation, Down Syndrome Ireland and Recovery Haven all at full capacity for registrations,” said cycle PRO Cathal Walshe. Cyclists can still register to cycle on behalf of the remaining charities which include Derrynane Inshore Rescue Services, Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre, Talbot Grove, Social Action Group Rathmore, Kerry Parents & Friends Association, Camphill Community Dingle, and Valentia Island Hospital. To celebrate this achievement the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have announced a competition to win a brand-new bicycle courtesy of O’Sullivan Cycles for any registrants looking to take part. This competition will be hosted on the Ring of Kerry Facebook page and will be open for entries until Monday, April 3. “We are thrilled that the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has received so many entries since we opened registration this year, the response has been overwhelming,” said Cathal. “We encourage cyclists around the country to continue to sign up to take part in the cycle and register with one of our excellent beneficiary charities.” He added: “We are reminding participants to cycle regularly in preparation and to stay safe on the roads.” For more information visit www.ringofkerrycycle.ie, or the Facebook page RingofKerryCharityCycle, or @RingofKerryCycle on Instagram and Twitter.

THE “text alert” system in practice in communities across Kerry has been key to apprehending a number of suspects for burglary in the Killarney area, a meeting in Fossa heard on Tuesday. Crime prevention and reduction was the focus of the very well-attended event, held at the Innisfallen Hotel. Speakers at the annual district Community Alert meeting were Superintendent Flor Murphy, Inspector Niall Crowley, Crime prevention officer Sergeant Jim Foley and Diarmuid Cronin of Muintir na Tire. The meeting was attended by representatives and liaison Gardaí from each of the Community Alert groups in Killarney, as well as those from South, East and Mid Kerry. Supt Murphy emphasised that Community Alert was a partnership approach between the community and An Garda Siochána. “It works on the principle of shared responsibility for crime prevention and reduction,” said Supt Murphy who highlighted the re-

cent success of “text alert” in the apprehension of a number of suspects for burglary in the Killarney area. The Killarney Garda Superintendent acknowledged the role played by the Community Alert groups in Beaufort and Glencar in assisting Gardaí in the apprehension of the suspects for the Waterville Post Office robbery last August. Sgt Jim Foley encouraged homeowners to install an intruder alarm and not to keep cash in their homes. Diarmuid Cronin of Muintir na Tire provided representatives with

property registrations books to record serial numbers of expensive items. He encouraged people to photograph their valuable items and to note the serial numbers to enable Gardaí to identify stolen property and return it to its rightful owners. These books are available from Community Alert representatives for €5. Inspector Niall Crowley encouraged people to report any suspicious activity within their communities to the Gardaí and highlighted the Garda website www.garda.ie for crime prevention advice.

Update Sought On When Killarney House Will Be Open To The Public SEANAD leas-chathaoirleach Senator Paul Coghlan has sought an update as to when Killarney House will be open to the public. Speaking in the Seanad on Wednesday, the Killarney-based senator asked the Minister for Regional Development, Michael Ring, to outline his plans and make a detailed statement on Killarney House and when it is to open to the public.

Senator Coghlan complimented the Minister on the opening of the gardens and talked about the huge numbers already visiting that area of the National Park. “As we know a budget of €10 million has been invested involving Fáilte Ireland as well as two Departments and the House once opened is capable of becoming our foremost tourist attraction and not

having it open at this stage is akin to ‘hiding our light under a bushel’,” said Senator Coghlan. it is intended to have an interpretative exhibition area to introduce visitors to an understanding of Killarney National Park within the House so its prime focus will be as a visitor centre for the Park, added Senator Coghlan. “The gardens, which were opened last

year, are of huge benefit to both locals and visitors alike and is in effect something of a town park, our own St Stephen’s Green,” said Senator Coghlan. “ I welcome the fact that the Minister will open the historic rooms element during the summer and that the various works still in progress and being advanced will finish soon and will be opened to the public thereafter as soon as complete.”

Recording History AT THE March meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed that relatives would favourably consider the inscribing of the birth and death dates of their loved ones on the grave headstones. Councillor Gleeson in proposing the motion stated that many people come to Ireland to trace their roots and to visit the ancestral homestead and the graveyard where their forebears lie. “It can be very disappointing for them on locating the grave to find that the dates of birth and death are not shown,” said Cllr Gleeson. “Inscribing those basic facts on a headstone is not betraying a secret and it can and often does serve to inform and enrich.” The dates on headstones can and do also inform of how times past were from the perspectives of health and longevity. “The Franciscan Friary in Killarney has a little graveyard beside the Church in which 34 people are interred. Of those born in the 19th century, 13 of the 24 dies before the age of 50 – i.e. 54%,” said Cllr Gleeson. “Of the 10 born in the 20th century, 3 died before age 50 – i.e. 30%. That little piece of history shows how life expectancy has greatly extended in 60 or 70 years. It shown the impact of the introduction of Penicillin and other aspects of modern medicine and nutrition.”

The space was fitted out using upcycled materials where possible, and a parent in the school brightened up the appearance of the walls with murals and a “reading tree”, while a “reading throne” was installed to be used for reading and storytelling. Children were involved in painting “book covers” to decorate the room. School principal Proinsias Mac Curtain said: “We now have an amazing library which the children love. This is a wonderful new resource for the school where children can come and relax and read. All our children will look forward to their library slot every week.” He added: “This will create enthusiastic young readers and writers for

VOLUNTEERS are being asked to participate in the 2017 County Clean-Up Day which will take place on Saturday, April 8. Now in its sixth year, the County Clean-Up, which takes place with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling, has proven to be a wonderful community event in which people clean up their respective areas and make their localities spick and span. The event was launched on Monday at the Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee to coincide with seminar for Tidy Towns groups from across the county. Last year 3,500 people volunteered their time to clean sections of road and other public places in Kerry, and collected 7,000 bags of waste – amounting to 70 tonnes of waste. This year the County Clean-Up Day is being extended and adopted by our neighbours in west Cork. It is hoped to have as many groups, communities and individuals as possible out on the day to help create

awareness and in turn help prevent people littering. If you would like to get involved you can register by logging onto www.countycleanup.com.

TRIBUTES are flowing this week as dedicated Killarney Races board chairman John Buckley (pictured) gets ready to hand over the reins after 13 years of voluntary service. John joined the team dedicated to promoting Killarney Races at the request of his friend the late Finbarr Slattery, who was secretary of venture from 1977 to 1991. “Finbarr knew no boundaries when it came to contacting people and getting them to do things for the good of the races,” said John. John, who became a director of Killarney Races in 1992, added: “Killarney Racecourse has gone from strength to strength to become one of the best tracks in the country. We are attracting all the best trainers, horses and owners and the quality of racing has improved no end, as have the facilities.” Racing started at the course, near Bunrower, in 1936, and facilities at the Ross Road course now include the addition of a new stable block. Over the years some of the most famous faces from the worlds of sport and politics have been welcomed trackside. “We have had all of the Taoisigh over the years, and of course all the Ministers for Agriculture,” added John. A highlight for the outgoing chairman was the celebration of Killarney Races’ 80th anniversary last year, which was attended by Minister Michael Creed. John also takes pride in the fact that Killarney Races has celebrated links with events in the UK and France, including Bordeaux Racecourse.

Dancing with the Stars

Aidan O’Mahony Lifts The Glitterball Trophy

Aidan O’Mahony and Valeria Milova celebrate winning the Final of RTE’s Dancing with the stars.

IT was back to business for newly crowned Dancing with the Stars winner Aidan O’Mahony this week. His high-octane performances with dance partner Valeria Milova last Sunday night saw him lift the “Glitterball” trophy. “I was like a statue on week one when I came in,” he said. “To get me to here is incredible. We enjoyed it thoroughly. “Valeria brought me along and brought me to this

point. I genuinely think our last dance was the best – we gave it everything and had four days down in Kerry preparing for that.” Viewers watched as Aidan’s dancing became ever-more confident over the 12-week series and his wife Denise was among those congratulating him moments after his triumph on Sunday. And this week it was back to business as he enjoyed resuming dad duties with their newborn daughter Lucia and he is

looking forward to returning to the day job Tralee Garda Station. Aidan’s first dance on Sunday was the judges’ choice and he performed a much-improved American smooth to My Baby Just Cares for Me by Michael Buble. For his second dance, he chose the salsa from his very first week and for his third dance Aidan scored a full 30 points to a routine danced to Holding Out for a Hero.

Art’s The Way To Do It ARTISTS and art teachers Tracy and Daniel Sexton’s paths first crossed while they were completing their degrees in Fine Art in the Crawford College of Art and Design. After they finished their Higher Diplomas and Master Degrees in Art and Design Education, the husband-and-wife team taught in Cork for 10 years and these experiences have been invaluable in preparing them for their exciting new venture, The Art House Studio & Gallery, at Upper Park Road, Killarney. “We have been very involved in the art community in Cork city over the last few years and we formulated a professional development initiative for art teachers called art group 7, which allowed us to exhibit our work and provide workshops for our students,” said Tracy. “Now with The Art House in Killarney we are excited to equally engage with the artistic community here in Kerry.” Last summer Tracy won The Screaming Pope Prize at Kfest Music and Art Festival. Daniel, who specialises in portraiture, recently presented a painting to President Micheal D Higgins. “As art educators and practising artists we are very

interested in inclusive projects which link art, people and place,” said Tracy. Daniel added: “We have always dreamed of opening our own art school and studio and to do it from our home which is so close to the centre of Killarney is ideal. We hope that it will be a centre of creativity, learning and will promote participation in the arts and its promotion in the local and wider community here in Kerry.” For details about The Art House’s upcoming spring and summer art courses, email thearthousekillarney@gmail.com or find it on Facebook @thearthousekillarney or contact 086-3197247 or 0862140728.

Pres Girls Ensure Daffodil Day Blossoms In The Classrooms

By

Kelliher

THE big-hearted students and staff at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School were out in force to host their annual fundraiser on Daffodil Day in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Of course yellow was the colour du jour. “Students and staff wore their most vibrant yellow attire and there were prizes for the best dressed,” said school PRO Vivienne Buckley. “The students were quite adventurous in their outfits and a fun-filled atmosphere filled the school.” The students also held a bake sale with mouth-watering pastries arriving from home much to the delight of the students and as a result hundreds of goodies were sold by the lunchtime. Additionally, a raffle took place thanks to the support of our sponsors who donated many prizes for this hotly anticipated event. “None of this would be possible without the enthusiasm of the students, sponsors and the staff,” added Ms Buckley. “Many thanks to the students who were involved and who volunteered of their time supporting Daffodil Day. The proceeds of the events will be presented to the Killarney branch of The Irish Cancer Society who continue to do such wonderful work.”

Apprentice Chef Finalists

From Killarney Community College KILLARNEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE students Alanna Loughnane and Aoife O’Brien have reached the final of the prestigious Apprentice Chef Programme. The two very enthusiastic Home Economics students both love to cook and bake, according to Máire Keane, their Home Economics teacher. The girls, who are in second year, excelled in creating two mouth-watering dishes that impressed the judges on the day of the semi-final in the IT Tralee last week. Aoife prepared, cooked and served an Italian main course dish of free-range local chicken with a pesto stuffing, wrapped in Parma ham in a white wine and cream sauce with olives, cherry tomatoes, basil leaves and parmesan, served with Italian polenta, roasted tomatoes and a green salad. Alanna served up green tea smoked chicken wings with cauliflower rice and apple and fennel slaw, with a cup of organic green tea to finish. Almost 30 schools from across Munster signed up for the Apprentice Chef programme this year. This is the fifth year of the successful programme which was established by Mark Doe of Just Cooking Cookery School and Mark Murphy, senior lecturer in Culinary Arts at IT Tralee. After a cook-off and written project, 80 students were chosen for the semi-final which took place in both the IT Tralee and IT Waterford with the final taking place in May.

The event, now in its ninth year, was organised by staff members Mary Fuller, Denise O’Sullivan and Joanna Hughes. Nine acts battled it out in the

grand final and the judges were Siobhan O’Brien, Brian Hehir and Mike Lynch and student judge Abigail Graham. “The school’s spirit is uplifted on days like this when the whole school community shares their many talents through drama, song or instrumental playing,” said Ms Hughes. Principal Stella Loughnane added: “This show was one of the highlights in the arts calendar as it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the amazing talents of the students.”

Kerry Families Highlight Importance Of Organ Donor Awareness Week By

Eve

Kelliher

FOR three Kerry families, life has been transformed utterly since their loved ones received kidney transplants. This week Pankaj Sharma, Killarney, Donal O’Brien, Loughquittane, and Stephen Byrne, Tralee, joined forces with GAA legend and newly crowned Dancing with the Stars winner Aidan O’Mahony to launch Organ Donor Awareness Week. The life-saving campaign will take place from April 1-8. All three Kerry donor recipients had the same message – that their new lease of life had a knock-on effect for their families. “We can plan ahead when it comes to activities when we are no longer on dialysis and it also has a knock-on effect when it comes to lifting the restrictions on our diet,” said Stephen. The annual awareness campaign aims to highlight the ongoing and ever-increasing demand for organ transplantation which relies on the public for organ donation. Its key message is that families need to discuss organ donation and keep the reminders of their willingness to donate visible by carrying the organ donor card, downloading the Digital Donor Card and permitting Code 115 to be included on their driver’s license. For the second year, living kidney donor and RTÉ broadcaster Vivienne Traynor continues in her voluntary role as ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness Week which is organised by the Irish Kidney Association. There are approximately 600 people

Pankaj and Eileen Sharma, Teresa Looney, Aidan O’Mahony, Stephen Byrne and Donal O’Brien.

in Ireland awaiting life-saving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants. In 2016, 280 organs transplants were carried out in Ireland. 230 were as a result of the generosity of the families of 77 deceased donors and the remaining 50 were from living kidney donors. For more information on the work carried out by the Irish Kidney Association in Kerry contact Teresa Looney on 087-2059205 or Con Brosnan on 087-6266810. Organ Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association LoCall 1890 543639 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050 or visit website www.ika.ie. Taoiseach’s Visit

Taoiseach’s Words Of Praise For Killarney Companies By

Eve

Kelliher

THE Taoiseach Enda Kenny had high praise for Killarney company Tricel during a visit to Kerry on Monday. Mr Kenny arrived at Tricel’s headquarters, at Ballyspillane Industrial Estate, as part of a whistle-stop tour of the county. Referring to Tricel’s business links across the globe, the Taoiseach said: “Tricel is an example of an Irish company that is going the way it should be moving, not just focused on one country.” Mr Kenny had also been present at Tricel’s signing of contract agreements during an official visit in 2015 which took place in France. Following this, the Taoiseach highlighted his intention of visiting Tricel’s company headquarters in Killarney once the opportunity arose, and this visit was duly scheduled for Monday. Mr Kenny was taken on a tour of the plant, where the owners, the Stack family, highlighted the company’s continued expansion, which includes the purchase of three new companies last year and the current opening of a second French location based in Avi-

gnon. The ongoing success of the company has generated a large listing of job opportunities and led to the filling of over 65 new positions last year and a further 24 so far to date this year alone, both in Kerry and throughout the UK. The Taoiseach, who concluded his visit to the county in the newly refurbished Coastguard station in Waterville, started his itinerary in Tralee. He turned the sod on the new Kerry Sports Academy at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. This €16.5 million facility is scheduled to open in autumn 2018. The Taoiseach also joined forces with the CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan, to cut the ribbon on the IDA’s new Advance Technology Building in Tralee as well as unveiling IDA Ireland’s new website promoting Kerry for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), “Invest in Kerry”. Mr Kenny also performed the official opening of The Kerry Food Hub in Firies. The Kerry Food Hub provides production facilities for small food business.

WEDDING bells rang out for Tanya Palmer and Shane Kerrisk-Ashe recently. The bride, from Firies, and groom, from Aughills, Keel, were wed in the Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Mary T O’Shea officiated at the civil ceremony which was followed by a reception in the fivestar venue. Photographers Ian Cronin and Riona MacMonagle captured the big day on camera. Helping the newlyweds celebrate were both sets of parents, Michelle and Sean Palmer and Margaret and Francie Ashe, as well as the bride’s grandmothers, Betty Palmer and Maureen Houghton. The maid of honour was Esther Hourigan, while Edel Cronin and Orla Murphy were bridesmaids. Johnny Daly lent his support as best man with Stephen O’Connor and Shane Dwyer as groomsmen and Connor Ashe enjoyed taking on pageboy duties. The couple’s paths first crossed in the Anvil Bar, Boolteens nearly six years ago and they got engaged in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day last year, on February 12. “Our big day was amazing – it was everything we wished for an more – even with the rain!” said Tanya. She and Shane were delighted to welcome family and friends from near and far for the occasion. The bridal hair and makeup was by Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty, Killarney, and the bride sourced her wedding dress in Unique Boutique, Castleisland. “My dad made our personalised cake stand and table numbers which was an extra special touch on the day,” said Tanya. The newlyweds, who will reside in Firies, enjoyed a mini-moon at Inchydoney Lodge & Spa, Clonakilty, and will travel to Lagos, Portugal, for their honeymoon in May. Pictures:

Welcome

T

o the March edition of Home & Living. The change in temperature has us all up and about, giving us some Vitamin D and the energy to tackle all the projects we put off over the winter months. If you’re planning a kitchen refurb or just a quick update with new table and chairs or a light, then this month’s kitchen special will be right up your street. The kitchen is the heart of the home and often the room we spend the most amount of time in, so updating this vital room can change the way you live in your home, especially if you follow the trend of a kitchen extension. My top picks for this month are the Little Greene Paint Company’s French Grey. If you’re thinking of repainting your kitchen you can’t go wrong with this palette of colours, available from Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets, Killarney. If you have space I love a freestanding dresser, the Cromwell large buffet and hutch is good-looking as well as practical storage for your kitchen; available from McElligotts, Castleisland. Our house this month is amazing. Set on a hilltop in Kenmare, its views are outstanding, and the double-height living room is to be coveted.

Top Trends for Kitchens

2017

French Grey and Dark Ledd Little Green Paint Available at Corcoran's Carpets & Furniture.

1.DARKER FLOORS

Are seeing a comeback. If you’re planning a white or pale-coloured kitchen use the floor to add warmth and texture.

2.GREY

We are still not bored with grey, but this year we are seeing different undertones – for example greengrey purple-grey, adding warmth and personality to the plan grey kitchen.

6. QUARTZ OR GRANITE TOPS

A huge number of people are opting for luxury kitchen surfaces. When you think of the overall spend this is one area you get big bang for your buck, increasing the grandeur of your kitchen as they are often a huge selling point,

RANGE COOKERS

7.

Apparently have come out top on a survey as one appliance people would put in their dream kitchen. They give a real homely look. Get one in black and you’ll be right on trend!

3.PATTERNED TILES

Are showing up everywhere and are a big trend in bathrooms this year. They work amazingly well if the rest of your room is neutral. The only drawback is the trend for open-plan kitchen/dining/ living rooms, which can mean this is a big statement if you use them on the floor. Maybe opt for a backsplash instead.

9. WARM METALS

4.BLACK APPLIANCES

Stainless steel has its merits but can seem sterile or clinical and depending on the finish can be a nightmare to keep. Black also makes a big statement and works with all the neutral-colour kitchens on trend right now.

5. DECORATION

We sometimes forget to add homely touches to our kitchens with our need for clean surfaces, but small things add life to a sometimes-clinical area, a plant pot, picture or just a colourful fruit bowl. Bring your personality into the kitchen and serve up a little softness. Grand Posy Liquid Art Avaialble at Moriarty's of Killorglin - €185

STORAGE SOLUTIONS We are moving away from the traditional trend of high cabinets over countertops. Separate tall larders and floor-to-ceiling presses give pantry-type storage with easier access. Drawers are also the way forward with kitchen storage, with runners that allow drawers to fully extend, providing easy access to everything in the drawer meaning no wasted space.

Gold is popping up everywhere – on handles, taps, even lights. A trend that we thought we would never see again, it just shows everything comes back. Home & Living - March 31, 2017

UNDERFOOT KITCHEN flooring does need to be practical and easy clean, but with the huge choice of flooring available now it doesn’t need to be dull. With the increasing trend for openplan kitchen/dining/living areas we are looking at different finishes and styles to warm up what can be a clinical space. Choose your flooring at the same time as you choose your cabinetry colours to get a more cohesive look and to avoid clashes in colour. But what to choose? Porcelain tiles tend to be the most hardwearing. They are generally waterproof, stain-resistant and scratchproof and – most importantly – easy to clean. They work well with underfloor heating. The only downside is your floor needs to be flat or it can cause major problems when fitting. And if you opt for the shiny porcelain it can be quite slippery when wet. Patterned tiles are the big thing for this year. They are great for creating zones in an open-plan area. Problems of where to

start and finish tiles and matching other flooring and finishes can be a headache, but patterned tiles make an amazing statement if done right. Laminate floors have come a long way. You can get the look of wood flooring or tiles with no maintenance. They will work as well with or without under floor heating, with no grout it’s simple to clean. The Alsa floor from National Tiles boasts the highest abrasion rating on the market. Wooden floors are not as tiring on the feet as tiles and warmer if you don’t have the luxury of underfloor heating, but need maintenance with wear and tear or scratches choose an engineered board as it is less likely to warp but with at least 4mm solid wood so as it can be refinished in the future if it requires it. Polished concrete stared with the industrial look but is creeping its way into our homes it’s hardwearing and easy to clean and low maintenance, but it’s not to everyone’s taste and colours are limited.

A new kitchen, is it an investment? IN THESE uncertain times we all want to spend our hard-earned cash wisely. Research by consumer watchdog Which? shows a new kitchen costs on average €10,000 but could add around 6% to the value of your property. The kitchen is often the focal point of a home it may be the first thing a buyer looks to replace so if you can provide a readymade attractive space buyers may be willing to pay more to save themselves the hassle of arranging a new kitchen.

And if you’re not thinking of selling in the near future you get the value of a new lease of life for your home. We use or kitchens daily and we spend a good portion of our home time in this hardworking room, so making it a place we enjoy to spend time in is essential. If you are planning on selling down the road keeping your kitchen neutral white is always a good option, as it doesn’t date as much as trend colours.

Add colour on your walls or accessories, which can be easily changed later. Another option if budget restricts changing the whole thing, is painting your kitchen as this can change the whole look on a budget.

How to create a contemporary chic kitchen THE design concept was to create a kitchen that is suitable for entertainment and private dinners using as many natural materials as possible. The couple wanted a combination of having a bright and airy kitchen and also be able turn down the lights to suit the mood of the moment.

The kitchen leads on to a bright and airy dining room where sit down meals can be enjoyed. It is an open-plan kitchen that has a private lounge area to one side. This is an ideal area for relaxation while the dinner is cooking away. The velvet couch and rich colour palette of the space adds a touch of glamour to the overall kitchen design.

The kitchen area has got walnut floors (from MD O'Shea, Killarney) that feel much softer underfoot than the tiles and also give a sense of warmth. The kitchen units are in a timeless greygreen colour that works well with the mud-brown quartz counter top. The curved cabinets link in well with a seating area and small round table. The fabric on the chairs is a natural linen sourced from South Africa. This is more gentle to the touch than the leather. The natural look connects well with the garden that is seen from the kitchen window. The walls are being decorated with an on trend blush pink paint, this enhances the silver grey door handles and the cooker hood.

T: 087 282 69 02 E: kadribormeister@gmail.com

The lighting plan ensures that all work areas are well lit. There is extra lighting under the units. The lights are on dimmers, to create a cosy ambience if desired.

Surprise birthday party for Vincent HE HAD thought he was going to dinner with his family but when Vincent Casey arrived at The Dromhall Hotel last saturday he was greeted by over 200 people. The group had gathered to wish him well at the surprise party to celebrate his landmark 50th

birthday. And the stalwart Dr Crokes man was delighted to see that the Andy Merrigan Cup, won in the All-Ireland club final on St Patrick’s Day, was among the guests of honour at the event. Of course, Vince was a full-forward on the 1992 team that had

previously won the title. In fact, the milestone birthday celebration had been delayed a week because of the 2017 fixture. The surprise party was organised by Vince’s wife Bernadette and their children, Tara and Luke.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around The World

What Does Brexit Mean For Tourism And Industry Kerry? Eve Kelliher speaks to industry leaders who share their views on how Britain’s departure from the EU could affect business here

“UNCHARTED WATERS”. The immediate response of Killarney’s first citizen Councillor Brendan Cronin summed up the general feeling locally when it comes to the potential fallout of Brexit. Britain’s departure from the European Union this week has been met with mixed reaction among local tourism and industry leaders. “Brexit has huge implications for us – we are sailing into uncharted waters,” the cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, told Killarney Advertiser. “I have read that there is already a big drop in British bookings coming to this country and I would be very concerned about tourism as well as about exports and imports. “There is a huge onus on our current Government to fight tooth and nail for our tourism sector, industry and agriculture. Brexit will have a knockon effect.” Newly elected chairperson of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation Patrick O’Donoghue noted that some of the effects have already been felt here. “In the context of the change in valuation of sterling, it will reduce spending power,” he added. However, Mr O’Donoghue said that the domestic and American tourism markets could compensate for a drop in visitors from the British market. Economic fallout from Brexit could also result in opportunities for Killar-

ney and Kerry should companies be looking to establish themselves elsewhere, he pointed out. “I don’t see any reason why Killarney and Kerry shouldn’t put their hand up and see if they can get any investment that is going as a result,” said Mr O’Donoghue. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill said Brexit was “definitely a concern”. “Just as we were seeing a return of the UK visitors it looks like we will see a reduction in numbers again,” he said.

“All we can do is continue to give the best possible service and offering that we can. It’s going to be a bigger task than anyone can imagine.” Alex Connolly, Head Of Communications, Fáilte Ireland, noted that challenges lie ahead for tourism. “Obviously we don’t know. What the final outcome of Brexit will be. The only thing we can be certain about is the uncertainty.” Mr Connolly added: “Our nearest competitor is now going to be stronger, competing with us for overseas

visitors. Firstly, we have to remain competitive and secondly we need to make sure we’re diversifying and minimising our risks.” No sector should be dependent on one market, he warned. “We shouldn’t put all our eggs into one basket,” he said. Pointing to the United States and the Continent as other strong markets for tourism, Mr Connolly said: “Fáilte Ireland will work with tourism interest on the ground to ensure that we are well positioned in those markets.”

Presidential Salute For Kerry Author Brendan Kennelly ACCLAIMED Kerry author Brendan Kennelly has won the inaugural Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award. Professor Brendan Kennelly was presented with the accolade by President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins at a reception in the Shelbourne Hotel on St Stephen’s Green on Wednesday. President Higgins presented a bespoke piece of Dingle Crystal to Brendan and in his address, President Higgins paid

tribute to his close personal friend and fellow poet. The President spoke of Brendan’s “immense” influence on Irish arts and society. The Kerry Association in Dublin was established in 1951 and aims to develop the great sporting, literary and cultural heritage of Kerry. 2017 is the inaugural year of the Association’s Arts Award which was sponsored by Kerry Group plc and it is intended to be an annual

reward, to recognise a Kerry individual’s excellence in the Arts. Professor Kennelly was chosen by the selection committee to be the first recipient of the award for his outstanding achievements in Literature. The World

Home&Away Inspired By Danny Casey

Major breakthroughs continue It has been a busy few weeks in the science arena, says Trevor O’Donoghue IN THE shadow of NASA’s announcement on the “Earth-like” planets around other stars, we heard that we no longer need to have our five portions of fruit and veg a day. We should now be aiming for 10 portions a day. The more, the merrier if you want to significantly reduce your chances of getting heart disease, stroke and cancer. In China significant inroads have been taken on the road to clean nuclear fusion, with a major breakthrough in burning hydrogen at a temperature hotter than our sun for well over a minute. This is one of the key requirements for a fusion reactor, which would offer unlimited clean energy and a move away from fossil fuels. Scientists might also have got a breakthrough in fighting the common cold. They now think they have a good grasp on the mecha-

nism by which the cold virus replicates and are now working on a procedure to interrupt this mechanism Reports on the story of a successful face transplant illustrates the tremendous progress made in this field, since the first full face transplant was performed in 2010. Before the end of 2017, if we are to believe the reports, a professor Sergio Canavero will attempt to perform the first head transplant. His partner / patient in this endeavour is Valery Spiridonov, a 31 year old suffering from Werdnig-Hoffman’s - a muscle-wasting disease which has left him confined to a wheelchair. A lot of the medical profession are sceptical to say the least and do not believe that medicine has advanced enough to allow for a successful surgery. Professor Canavero on the other hand is 100

% confident that the he can do it, and all going well expects Valery to be up and about having a chat shortly after the operation. Whether he is a crackpot or not remains to be seen, but one thing he does have in common with great scientific revolutionaries like Darwin and Galileo is that their revolutionary ideas were also initially met with raised eyebrows and criticisms.

Tributes As Jimmy Deenihan Retires From Politics TRIBUTES flowed to former Minister Jimmy Deenihan as he announced that he would not be seeking re-lection to the Dáil in the future. Mr Deenihan’s work rate as a public representative was “phenomenal”, ensuring he won ten elections in a row during his career, noted his party colleague Kerry TD Brendan Griffin. “Jimmy Deenihan has given decades of outstanding service to his county and country through his role as a public representative in the Oireachtas for over 30 years,” said Deputy Griffin. He added: “I personally owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jimmy for giving me the opportunity to learn from him as his Parliamentary Assistant for three years, an experience that has enormously benefitted my work in public service. “Jimmy gave everything to his work, first as a Kerry footballer and then as a politician. He is a true man of Kerry and can be proud of countless achievements at local, national and international level.” Jimmy Deenihan served county and country exceptionally well, added Killarney’s Senator Paul Coghlan. “The people of Kerry were fortunate to have such a diligent public servant working on their behalf,” he said. “It was my pleasure to know Jimmy throughout his political career and we always worked well together. I wish him all the very best for the future.” Kerry Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris added: “I would like to offer my best wishes to Jimmy Deenihan on his retirement from politics. While Jimmy was an opponent and rival of mine on and off the field over many years, I would have to say he never mixed personal issues with political and like on the football field he was tough but fair, I know politics can consume you and I hope Jimmy and his family enjoy his retirement and I also know that he will still make a contribution to Kerry and his local community in the coming years.”

David Clifford mobbed by his young fans when he returns to Fossa school

TO CELEBRATE the launch of the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Star Awards, Electric Ireland travelled to Fossa – the home parish Kerry Minor star David Clifford – to see the effect their successful Minor team has had on the local kids. After winning their third All-Ireland in a row last season, it seems the Kerry Minor team are becoming major role models in the lives of children all over the county. David Clifford, who will captain Kerry Minor in 2017 as they go on the hunt for an unprecedented four in a row, was mobbed by students at break time as they soaked up every bit of advice he could give them. Not only did the students create home-made posters of their hero but they even wrote and sang a song for the Kerry captain! We hope to be hearing “Da – Do – David” ringing out in Croke Park for years to come. Clifford was delighted to see the admiration that the students had for him and his team remarking: “It was great to see all the Kerry jerseys and all the kids around playing football… Hopefully someday some of them will become Kerry Minors too.” The inaugural GAA Minor Star awards will recognise the best individual performers from the entire season, including provincial and All Ireland stages. The best player in each position will be selected by a panel of four GAA legends.

Health And Wellbeing To Take Centre Stage At Lee Strand Event

Unveil a new complexion with Sothys medical grade glycolic acid peeling treatment, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

THIS luxury Sothys facial features an intensive resurfacing peeling treatment that combines Alpha and Beta Hydroxyl acids together with H2CR™ Cosmeceutical Cellular Renewal and oxygenating actives, resulting in a pronounced radiance effect. It is suitable for all skin types from ageing to acne except sensitive, reactive skin. The first phrase of the facial offers detoxifying effects. An exfoliating paste in a clay base with natural crystals of corundum eliminates dead skin cells and deeply cleanses the pores of the skin. The paste incorporates an anti-pollution peptide to encourage elimination of environmental pollutants and micro-particles that accumulate and asphyxiate the skin’s tissues. The second phase resurfaces with a peeling renovator. Liquorice extract has been added to the formula to reduce any irritation potential. A steam treatment and extractions are preformed at this stage. Following the peeling phase the skin’s pH is corrected and calmed with the Rebalancing Balm, a calming emulsion. The final phase features a cooling and oxygenating mask to encourage cellular oxygenation. A hydra-softening complex containing a natural amino acid is included to soothe and hydrate the tissues with the soft clay mask taking any warmth from the skin... the result is a radiant and energised skin. Lifestyle The Healy-Rae World Tour Of Kerry Is Well Under Way

31.03.17

THE Healy-Raes have embarking on a world tour of Kerry in a new play written by Killarney storyteller and actor Ray O’Sullivan. “The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes” is the hilarious and sometimes-poignant story of bachelor brothers Densey and PJ Doona who appear time-locked in a life of loneliness and celibacy in their small family farm in Kerry. But “foreign women”, love, elections and politics combine to change their lives, with the well-oiled HealyRae machine at the centre of the miraculous transformation. Written by Ray O’Sullivan, it’s the Cork native’s first full-length play. O’Sullivan, who also stars the play, is no stranger to the stage and has earned a reputation as an original and tal-

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

JOHN 11:1-45: Martha and Mary were people of faith but Jesus led them to an even deeper faith. Who were the people who led you to a deeper faith in Jesus? Remember them and give thanks. Martha and Mary were struggling to come to terms with their bereavement. What has helped you in similar situations? The concern of Jesus is palpable and touching. Recall those who matter to you and to whom you matter. Such love mediates God’s love, which surpasses human love with the gift of new life and Easter joy. One can imagine Lazarus as a symbol of people and groups that are written off as dead (sometimes by themselves), and yet through faith come back to life again. Have you had the experience of being revived by faith? Has faith helped to free you from what held you in bondage, or was destructive of your life? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Come Forth Lazarus

IN THIS Gospel Jesus is surrounded by a culture of death. The disciples are afraid to go back to Bethany, the Jews want to stone Jesus to death, Mary and Martha are distraught over the death of their brother Lazarus, and Lazarus himself lies bound in the darkness of the tomb. It appears as if there is no hope. Jesus weeps for his friend and for those around him. Yet, surrounded by a culture of violence and despair, Jesus gives hope, compassion, and resurrection to those in turmoil. It is easy to say that nothing can be done when we are faced with difficult situations in our own lives. Yet Jesus says, “Lazarus, come out”, and to the people he says, “Unbind him, let him go.” It is a message for all of us to come away from a culture of death; to help unbind one another and to also allow ourselves to emerge from the tomb. We are called to take away the stone. Sunday’s Gospel is a story of liberation. Jesus gives a new insight into the power of faith over death. “Hope means to keep living amid desperation and to keep humming in the darkness. Hope is knowing that there is love, it is trust in tomorrow, it is falling asleep and waking to work when the sun rises. In the midst of a gale at sea, it is to discover land. In the eyes of another, it is to see understanding. As long as there is hope, there will also be prayer. And God will be holding you in his loving hands.” Jane Mellet, Veritas

Anam Cara

The organisation that supports bereaved parents, is hosting its monthly meeting for bereaved parents on Tuesday, April 11, from 7.30pm to 9pm in Recovery Haven, 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee. The meeting offers parents a safe and comfortable setting where they can connect with other bereaved parents who will understand the depth of their loss and grief. A bereaved mother speaking about the benefits of Anam Cara meetings said: “Nothing is normal after the death of a child and it never will be again. Anam Cara helps. People may say that after, for example, two years you should just be able to pull up your socks and get on with it, but life is not like that when you lose a child. There is no timeline for getting over grief, it’s a continuous, daily thing. I would encourage any bereaved parents to come along. I know that anything that is unknown is often really scary, however, it’s important people know there is no pressure or onus on anyone to talk at the meetings, just being there can help.” For more information or to order a free copy of the information pack, you can email info@anamcara.ie or ring the information line on 085-2888 888.

Killarney Advertiser’s resident cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on familiar faces and places

Grace Notes Why Stop Singing? Music doesn’t stop at age 18, it is for life, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

I HAVE been teaching singing for a number of years and now the time has come for my first students to fly the nest. I will never forget these students as I feel I have grown up with them. I began to see singing from a different angle when I sat behind the piano in front of them for the first time. I firmly believe that we learn more about ourselves by teaching others and that is exactly what has happened to me. While we try to keep certain boundaries between ourselves and our students, we can’t help but form a special bond with some of them. I am about to say goodbye to a number of young people who I have grown very fond of and, while I know I will see and speak to them in the future, I am saddened to know that I will never sit on the other side of the piano from them again.

My experience was a little different to most of my students as I wanted to pursue a career in music and therefore the singing lessons and practising didn’t stop for me just because the Leaving Cert came along. I understand that hobbies can fade and college life brings a whole host of new opportunities for these young people, but I do find it hard to know that most people will stop singing and stop playing instruments once the Leaving Cert practical is done. I’m sure they will always love music, but their close relationship with it may end. I always say that I have students from age 8 to 18 and age 40 plus but sadly the vast majority of people don’t continue or begin to attend music lessons in their 20s and 30s. Some people even ask me if adults can do singing lessons! If you are about to sit your Leaving Cert, please take time, if only now and then, to pick up your musical instrument or take out your song folder. Music doesn’t stop at age 18, it is for life. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

STAFF and pupils at French for All/Killarney School of French had the recipe for success when it came to an educational and delicious day out at the weekend. The adult students of Helene Courtney and her co-teacher Vin-

cent Leprince tucked into “galettes” (pancakes) at Ballyseedy Garden Centre last Saturday. “Some of the students have been with French for All for 12 years and we added two new classes this year,” said Helene.

“The weather added to the treat last Saturday too! I would also like to say ‘bonne chance’ to the Leaving Certificate students who will be doing their oral French exam next week.”

A School Project!

Sbarro Eight Hot Rod Concept Motorsport

Ferrari Back To The Top Step CAN you remember what you built at school? Maybe a papier-mâché volcano for science class or a stool in woodwork? The students of ESPERA Sbarro Montbéliard, France built something with a bit more detail: the Sbarro Eight hotrod concept. Yes, they have to hand them this win on school projects. ESPERA Sbarro School of Automotive Design was created by a Swiss designer Franco Sbarro over two decades ago. Its aim is to foster creative ideas in the field of auto design, in an age of overly-regulated and sterilized car designs. Students come there from all over the world, and over a period of 10 months are taught all the basic aspects of automotive technology and design, culmi-

nating in the creation of one-off automotive design studies like the Sbarro Eight here. This unique combination of old school American hot rod and futuristic stealth bomber looks features a striking design of sharp corners and aggressive angles. Under the bonnet is a 3.2 litre twin turbo Maserati V8 that turns out 368 horsepower with custom side pipes and the trademark hot rod wheel combination of large rear and small front. The interior features plenty of real wood and leather, custom built fiberglass seats with hand-stitched leather pieces and a Parrot Asteroid Smart car audio with a 6.2-inch screen bringing the interior technology bang up to date. Tempted to go back to school…

FERRARI took top honours in last weekend’s F1 season opener in Melbourne, Australia. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took the top step ahead of Lewis Hamilton in second followed by his new teammate Valtteri Bottas in third. Coming into the season opener Mercedes were considered to be the title favourites, however Ferrari showed good pace and beat Mercedes on a straight fight. Hamilton had no answer only stating that the new cars were impossible to overtake however not acknowledging that it was F1’s young sensation, Max Verstappen that he couldn’t overtake. Verstappen’s ability to make his car wider than everyone else on track is what is making F1 exciting

again. Thankfully the new regulations seam to support racers over strategists. The big back-story from last weekend was Fernando Alonso’s frustration with Honda. This has triggered rumours that he could quit the team before the end of the season if McLaren Honda don’t show pace very soon. McLaren have had a dismal start to the season with most of pre-season testing spent in the garage or on the back of a recovery truck and to add insult to injury, a non-finish on their first outing has understandably fuelled this speculation. McLaren is depriving fans of potentially one of the most epic battles in F1 history, Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton up front.

Audi Halts A4 And A5 Production A FIRE at a key supplier has brought Audi’s flagship Ingolstadt production plant to a skidding halt. Audi has simply run out of the parts it needs to keep building the A4 saloon and estate and the A5 Coupe, Sportback five-door hatch and the Cabriolet. At least 8,500 of the plant’s 43,000 workers will take most of this week off, with Audi losing out on building at least 5,600 cars. The A4 and A5 ranges will continue to be built at Audi’s neighbouring plant at Neckarsulm, whose supplies were not affected by the fire. A visit to what is Audi Group’s biggest production site in the past couple of years brought home to me just what an enormous and slick operation it is. As the second-largest automobile plant in Europe, it produces more than half a million cars, and the ultra-modern Audi Forum Ingolstadt is a key visitor attraction in the scenic Bavarian town.

As our train pulled into Ingolstadt railway station, we were greeted by the sight of gleaming consignments of new Audi models awaiting transportation. Reminders that Ingolstadt is proud to be Audi’s hometown were everywhere, with the signature “four rings” emblem prominently displayed. The Audi Forum and museum, located in the centre of the appealing medieval town, is definitely well worth a visit for anyone with even a fleeting interest in motoring, showcasing all models throughout the company’s history, from the early Horch models of the last century and also encompassing police vehicles from various decades. A record-setting 592,337 entirely built Audi models were produced in Ingolstadt last year. An automobile drives off the assembly lines every 30 seconds, or more than 2,500 a day.

7TH ANNIVERSARY BROSNAN

In loving memory of a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother Masie Brosnan, late of Upper Coolies, Muckross Killarney who departed from this world on 30th March 2010, Age 65. No special day is needed For me to think of you, You are always in my heart No matter what I do, So dearly loved and sadly missed by your loving husband Mike. MOM Although you cannot hear her voice, Or see her smile no more, Your mother walks beside you still Just as she did before, She listens to your stories And wipes away your tears, She wraps her arms around you, And she understands you fears, It’s just she isn’t visible to see With human eye, But talk to her in silence and Her spirit will reply, You’ll feel the love she has for you, You’ll hear her in your heart, She’s left her human body, But from us she’ll never part. Sadly missed by her children and partners, Josie, Esther, Johnny, Martn, Sharon, Deirdre, Danny.

19TH ANNIVERSARY O’SULLIVAN

We cannot bring the old days back When we were all together The family chain is broken now But memories live forever. May he rest in peace dear Jesus In Thy Heavenly home above With the Sacred Heart of Jesus In His own eternal love.

In memory of our good friend Kieran O’Sullivan, late of Killarney. We shall not stand at your Grave and weep, You are not there, you do not sleep; You are the thousand Winds that blow You are the diamond Glints on snow You are the sunlight On ripened grain, You are the soft Autumnal rain. When we awaken in The morning hush, You are the warm uplifting rush Of soaring birds in circled flight You are the stars that shine at night So we do not stand at your Grave and cry You are not there you did not die. Deeply missed by your friends Mike McSweeney, Connie Murphy, Denis O’Leary, John G. O’Leary, John O’Connor, David Sheehan, Pa Sugrue, Tony Sugrue.

killarney advertiser 21 april 2006

Along the road to yesterday That leads us straight to you Are memories of happy days Together we once knew. A silent grief that’s in our hearts No human eye can trace For many a broken heart is hid Beneath a smiling face. Always remembered by your loving sons Danny, Mark, Mike, Vince and Colm, daughters Geraldine and Karen, sons-inlaw, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Initials: MM

As we remember Tom on the 1st anniversary of his sudden death, his loving wife Maureen, daughters Cathy and Emily, brother Gerard, John and Cyril, sister-in-law Angela, nephews Paul, David and Noel and niece Geraldine wish to thank most sincerely all those who paid their respects on our heartbreaking loss. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the love and support of our wonderful friends, neighbours and relatives. They have been with us every step of the way, helping us through each and every day. Your presence was very comforting as we deeply mourned the loss of a wonderful fun loving husband and dad. Our thanks to those who attended the rosary, removal, funeral mass and burial. To everyone who visited our home, telephoned, sent mass cards, perpetual enrollments, letters of sympathy and flowers and to those who travelled long distances and from overseas to pay their respect our sincere thanks.

In loving memory of Joe O’Connell late of 60 Park Drive, Killarney who died on the 4th April, 2005. Let us not look for you only in memory, Where we would grow lonely without you. In loving memory of Joan “Flor” Sheehan late of Shinnagh, Rathmore, Who died on the 2nd of April 2015. Looking back with memories Upon the path you trod We bless the hours we had with you And leave the rest to God. From all her family.

ST. THERESA St. Theresa the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from thy heavenly gardens and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to please grant me the favour I thee implore and tell him I will love him each day more and more. Amen. K.H

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Garden Magic

Slug Patrol The relatively mild winter has been welcome in many respects, but has one major drawback, says Debby Looney

THE mild winter has meant there have been no plant losses due to frost, many semi-evergreens remained in full foliage, and some roses flowered throughout the winter months. However, there is one major drawback to contend with…slugs! They seem to be waiting in regiments to munch their way through everything, and in retaliation we scatter blue pellets of certain death. But have you ever wondered how and why these pellets work? The toxic ingredient in slug pellets is metaldehyde, which is lethal to slugs and snails because it damages the cells which produce mucus. This causes the slug to first produce huge amounts of slime and then dehydrate. Between 1% and 5% of the actual pellet is poison, which is why it sometimes seems that one brand of pellets is more effective than another. If used in small amounts they are not toxic to larger animals, but every year there are cases of pets being poisoned by them. In wildlife, however, metaldehyde is posing a serious problem. The numbers of predators of slugs, such as birds, shrews and hedgehogs is decreasing significantly, while the number of slugs is increasing. Ask yourself, when are slugs most active? During wet weather, as all gardeners know. But what happens to slug pellets in the rain – yes – they disintegrate, and the metaldehyde leaches out. The solution is simple, fellow gardeners. Try organic slug pellets, which use iron phosphate as the active ingredient. This causes the slug to dry out, which makes it unappealing for wildlife. When it decomposes it is harmless to the environment. If it gets wet it actually becomes more appealing to slugs, so, even if it is a little more expensive than traditional pellets, you will use a lot less. Again, they are available in the Neudorff range of organic products. It may seem that I advertise Neudorff, but sadly, there are not many options when it comes to organic products. If we all try to use organic products, hopefully chemical companies will eventually change their ranges to accommodate us! It is, of course, best practice to encourage as many natural predators of slugs into our gardens as possible. The fewer chemicals we use, the more wildlife we will see!

‘High Time To End Bi-Annual Clock Change’ IN RELATION to the clocks going forward an hour at 1am last Sunday morning (26 March) in keeping with the bi-annual time change, I called on the European Commission to bring forward proposals to abolish the “archaic” practice. I am Ireland’s only member of a group of MEPs campaigning for the bi-annual clock change and hasve voiced serious concerns for public health in calling for the abolition of the time change. My colleagues and I are concerned by the serious health and safety concerns that this change of time presents to citizens. Various studies prove that going against the natural rhythm has a detrimental impact on sleep and overall health, leading to weakened immunity, increased anxiety and depression in some cases. More recently, we have noted increased calls from citizens for an overhaul in this regard. I am therefore fully supportive of a European Parliament Motion to end the practice. We have asked the European

Commission to bring forward proposals to abolish the clock change. In the meantime, we are taking this issue to the public. I would encourage constituents to contact me or the European Commission in order to express their views and preferences in relation to this. I believe it to be an unneces-

sary, archaic exercise and it is high time – all puns intended – that we address the issue of daylight savings and put an end to this unnecessary practice. Sean Kelly, Ireland South MEP, Killarney

National Secretary To Attend Retired Nurses Agm RETIRED nurses of various disciplines in Kerry are invited to attend the 20th annual general meeting of the Kerry Branch of the Retired Nurses Association, at the Killarney Court Hotel on Friday, April 7, at 11am. Since its formation in 1996 the Kerry branch has been proactive in the welfare of all retirees from the nursing profession as well as organising social events and outings to places of interest each season. This year’s AGM will be addressed by the national secretary Eddie Kelly. Eddie is a former All-Ireland hurler whose three main interests in life are the GAA, Wexford hurling and the welfare of retired nurses. He will address any issues that may arise during the meeting on April 7. This year’s outing will be to a one-day trip to Cobh and Spike Island on Tuesday, April 25, and members are reminded that bookings for this trip will be taken at the AGM. The national conference of the association is again scheduled to take place in The Hudson Bay Hotel in May and based on the success of last year’s conference a large attendance is expected at Athlone for the 2017 conference which will be preceded by a golf outing on the course adjoining the hotel and is open to all the various branches. Finally a special appeal is extended to all retired members to attend the AGM . Sem Footballers Aiming To Go Back-To-Back The reigning All-Ireland champions are hoping for more of the same in Croke Park, writes Adam Moynihan

SATURDAY could be a historic day for the Sem senior footballers. If Garry McGrath’s charges can carry their great run of form into the final and beat St Peter’s of Wexford, they would become the first Sem team to retain the Hogan Cup. There was a 23-year gap between the school’s first and second titles (1969-1992), and it was 24 years before they lifted the trophy again in 2016, so to win two in a row would be an incredible achievement. Following on from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne’s remarkable triumphs in 2014 and 2015 -– and, of course, their own heroics in 2016 – the Sem will also be hoping to complete a unique fourin-a-row for Kerry colleges in the Hogan Cup. Their form so far this season has been nothing short of spectacular. The Killarney school beat Dingle in the final of the O’Sullivan Cup before making light work of ISK, De La Salle (Macroom) and Bandon in the group stage of the Corn Uí Mhuirí. They then defeated Dingle again with fifteen points to spare in the quarters and booked their place in the final with another comfortable win over Flannan’s

in the semis. After a relatively difficult first half against Tralee CBS in the Munster final they eventually found their feet, running out 2-20 to 0-11 winners, and it was a similar story against St Colman’s (Mayo) in the Hogan Cup semi-final. They won that game 3-13 to 1-11; their three goals were their first three scores of the second period.

This is an exceptionally talented Sem team

Hogan Cup Final St Brendan’s College v St Peter’s College, Wexford Saturday, April 1, at 4pm (Croke Park)

The Sem put up some huge numbers en route to last year’s All-Ireland and they’ve somehow managed to carry that phenomenal free-scoring form into this campaign. They’ve averaged exactly 25 total points over the course of their ten competitive games and only twice have they failed to break the 20-point barrier. The holders will go into this game as favourites but Leinster champions St Peter’s will certainly provide a stern test. The Wexford school will be making

Towering S. Brendan’s College footballers Billy Courtney (6’3”) David Shaw (6’4”) and Mark O’Shea (6’3”) ahead of the Hogan Cup final. PICTURE: EAMONN KEOGH

their first appearance in the AllIreland football final although they do have decent pedigree when it comes to the small ball. They’ve won the Dr Croke Cup four times. St Peter’s defeated Coláiste Eoin, Knockbeg College, Wicklow Schools and then Moate (Westmeath) in the final to clinch their first-ever Leinster Championship before earning their place in the Hogan Cup decider with an impressive 2-10 to 2-9 win over St Mary’s Magherafelt of Derry.

Defensively their record is quite good. That semi-final was the first time they conceded two goals in a match and they’ve held their opposition to under ten points (excluding goals) in all but one game so far. This is an exceptionally talented Sem team, many of whom have played (and won) in Croke Park multiple times already in their young careers, but you can be sure that St Peter’s will be ready to seize their opportunity if the Killarney lads aren’t at their best.

Martin O’Neill Backs Celtic Ahead Of FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final I obviously wish you all the very, very best

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND manager Martin O’Neill has expressed his admiration for Killarney Celtic ahead of their historic FAI Junior Cup semifinal against Sheriff YC. Speaking in a video posted to the club’s Facebook page, O’Neill praised Celtic for getting so far in Ireland’s showpiece competition. “I think that Killarney Celtic have done absolutely fantastically in getting to the semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup,” the former Leicester City, Glasgow Celtic and Aston Villa boss said.

“I obviously wish you all the very, very best.” The video is the latest in a series featuring Celtic supporters from all over the world offering encouragement to the players in the run up to the big game. Ex-players, fans, family and friends from the UK, Chicago, New Mexico, California and Australia have already sent in videos as the club gears up for the most important match in its history. The fixture will be played in Mastergeeha’s Kilbrean Park on Saturday, April 8, at 5pm.

St Brendan’s College Defend Their All-Ireland Crown

Rugby News ... Eamonn

As St Brendan’s College line out to defend their All-Ireland SFC title in Croke Park tomorrow, Eamonn Fitzgerald gives a preview of the big game

St Brendan’s College mentors Garry McGrath, Arthur Fitzgerald, and Hugh Rudden with the squad ahead of the Hogan Cup final. PICTURE: EAMONN KEOGH

ST BRENDAN’S will defend their All Ireland SFC title in Croke Park tomorrow, where St Peter’s College, Wexford, provide the opposition. In last year’s final Brendan’s ran up a big score of 2-13 and they have been maintaining that high scoring rate throughout the 2017 campaign. In the semi-final they defeated St Coleman’s of Claremorris 3-13 to 2-11. Looking over the records of the winners;’ scores in recent years we note as follows: 2016, St Brendan’s College, Killarney 2-13; 2015, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Daingean Uí Chúis 1-12; 2014, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Daingean Uí Chúis 1-8 and in 2013, St Patrick’s College, Maghera 1-20. St Brendan’s will be hoping to do the two in a row just like the Dingle school did in 2014 and in 2015. This is a very good St Brendan’s team. They are slow to start but then in the second half they score freely. Robert Osborne has kept a good goal and in particular the half back line of centre back Michael Potts as well as his wing men of Jack Griffin and Niall Donohue is very solid. Midfielders Billy Courtney, the dual All-Ireland minor winner along with Cian Gammell, need to assert superiority from the start because the Brendan’s forwards are very good. Chief scorer is corner forward David Shaw, another All-Ireland winner with Kerry. Mark O’Shea has been very influential as a score creator. Also showing good form are centre forward Donnchadh O’Sullivan and the ever-reliable Dara Moynihan, the man with the mighty engine. In the Wexford v Mahera semi-final Rory O’Connor scored a cracking 41st minute goal into the wind which proved crucial as St Peter’s College withstood a late surge from St Mary’s to edge to a one-point victory in this excellent Masita All-Ireland PPS Senior football ‘A’ championship game played at Inniskeen, Monaghan, last week. This was an unusual semi-final pairing as St Mary’s had just won their first ever McRory Cup, while St Peter’s, more renowned for their hurling exploits, were still seeking their first All-Ireland senior football title.

We wish the best of luck top the local college. They can bring back the All Ireland Hogan Cup to Killarney following on the recent success of Dr Crokes who won the All Ireland club title on St Patrick’s Day. KERRY V CAVAN Amazingly Kerry continue to be caught up with in the final minutes of their national league games. It happened again in Breffni Park on Sunday last as Cavan came from behind in injury time to draw level with Kerry. In the previous round Kerry were superb against Dublin in Tralee, but then they also conceded 2 late points to tie the game. One league point dropped to the Dubs and another point lost to Cavan. Kerry got 7 of their points from frees and shot 13 wides in their total of 13 points, while Cavan scored 1-10. That puts Kerry out of contention for the league title and adds extra importance to their meeting with Tyrone at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday next, March 5. It all comes down to this the final round of the league. SCOR NA bPAISTI COUNTY FINALS Quiz: 1st St Senans, North Kerry Football Board; 2nd. Glenflesk. ANOTHER relatively quiet weekend on the rugby front following an action-packed Six Nations. As the international players return to their provinces, the focus returned to the Pro 12, with one eye on the European Cup this weekend. Munster were in action against Zebre in Parma, Italy. Rassie’s men won 50-14 as they consolidated second spot in the Pro 12, however all eyes are on Thomond Park this Saturday as Munster host old European foes Toulouse in the quarter final of the European Cup or the Heineken Cup as some of us still call it. Thomond Park is a sell out with a few months and tickets are like hens’ teeth, but a cracker is in store. Speaking of which, our own Killarney RFC seniors played in a cracker of a match themselves last Sunday in glorious conditions at Aghadoe. Dungarvan was the opposition and the match was the second round of the promotion playoffs in the Munster Junior League. With everything to play for and the home side in a good vein of form, a tight match was always going to be on the cards. Ger Moynihan’s men finished out the match with a two-point win and both teams were nip and tuck for the whole match. Killarney were five points ahead with four minutes to go and the visitors ran in for a try, much to the consternation of the sizeable home crowd. However, the lads won a penalty in the dying minutes and Paudie Sheahan stepped up, cool as you like to slot home the penalty to win. Ger Moynihan almost scored a try from the kick off, however the men in black and red will now face neighbours Killorglin in a winner takes it all promotion battle this weekend. The prize is promotion to Division 2! Who needs to go to Thomond Park or Lansdowne Road for top-drawer rugby when you can witness games like this on our doorstep! Well done, lads!

Killarney RFC seniors played a cracker of a match against Dungarvan last Sunday at Aghadoe in glorious sunshine and in front of a great vocal home crowd, with the home side victorious on a scoreline of 25 to 23.

FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final! Killarney Celtic will play Sherriff FC of Dublin in Mastergeeha on Saturday, April 8th, at 5.00pm. This is an absolutely huge game for the club, the biggest in a lifetime, and support will be crucial. FAI Senior Cup Killarney Celtic’s exploits in the FAI Junior Cup have given us entry to the Senior Cup, and we will play Boyle Celtic at home in Celtic Park on the weekend of April 30th. Results Denny Premier: Killarney Celtic 1 Tralee Dynamos 1. Danny Roche opened the scoring early on for Dynamos. Celtic had more of the play but found them very hard to break down until Wayne Sparling made a great run before neatly squaring the ball for Matt Keane to slot home, making it 1-1 at the break. Celtic again pressed hard in the second half but Dynamos defence was resolute and it took a great save late on from close range by Roy Kelliher to give us a share of the spoils. U17 League: Killarney Celtic 6 Killorglin 1 A powerful display saw Celtic take complete control and rack up a big total. U15 Kerry Cup: Tralee Dynamos 2 Killarney Celtic 1. A brilliant effort by everybody against a very good Dynamos side. Ryan O’Grady hit the target for us but it wasn’t enough on the day. U15 Div Two: Fenit Samphires 3 Killarney Celtic B 5. Cian Doe (2), Kasper Prusak, Tom Doyle, and Eoin Walsh got the goals to help us win a great match. Cathal Higgins and Harry Buckley were outstanding for Celtic. Fossa

Fossa GAA: Lotto 26th March 2017 Numbers drawn were 2, 16, 18, 24. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €14,250. Seniors Fossa played Ballymac in the second round of the County league on Sunday. This proved to be a high scoring, open and entertaining game of football. Ballymac raced into an early two point lead before Fossa struck for a goal from Tadgh O’ Shea in the 5th minute, however Aidan Breen kept Ballymac in touch with a brace of frees. Paudie Clifford kicked a couple of excellent frees and Tadgh O’ Shea and Donald O’ Sullivan was causing the Ballymac defenders plenty of problems whenever the ball went into them. Fossa played well in this half with some great teamwork leading to good scores and they lead at half time 1-08 to 0-09. Ballymac had the aid of the breeze in the second half and became more assertive around the middle third of the pitch. Fossa kicked three points in the first 6 minutes of the half but struggled to win enough possession after that to kill off the game, Ballymac got to grips around midfield and continued to kick some good points from distance. With the game entering the closing stages, Ballymac took the lead and despite the vallient efforts of the Fossa players to get back on terms they couldn’t break down a resolute Ballymac defence. Final score, Fossa 1-13, Ballymac 0-18. Ladies Football Well done to our Fossa players Erica McGlynn and Anna O’ Reilly who helped the Kerry Ladies Minor team to a comprehensive win over Waterford on

The Fossa senior ladies recorded a six point win over Ballymac on Sunday morning so well done to all concerned. Minor County League Div. 3 The minors had a good win over Churchill 5-11 to 2-10 on Saturday evening, this was a good game which ebbed and flowed on several occasions. Fossa conceded two penalties which gave Churchill a lifeline but some fantastic scores from David Clifford and Emmett O’ Shea sealed an important win for Fossa.

Killarney RFC News

U14’s: Next Saturday our U14’s compete in the semifinal of the West Munster U14 Cup at Aghadoe. The lads will be looking to build on from winning the league and will look to push to add to the coveted silverwear for the season. John O’Connell, Eoin Seery and Seamus Greally have done sterling work with all of their charges right across the season and will be looking for a strong finish to the season and will hope for a good home crowd to support the lads. The match kicks off at 11am. Best of luck lads! U16’s: Killarney U16s travelled to Charleville last Saturday to play in the last round of the U16 KCL plate competition. This was a game that both teams needed to win to qualify to play Listowel in the final. Killarney started the game with plenty of pace and aggression, dominated territory & possession for the first 15 minutes, and were rewarded with a fine break by winger Mark Sheehan to score in the corner. This was converted with an excellent placed ball by Cian Murphy from the touchline. From the restart Killarney continued with their dominance in both territory and possession and were it not for an excellent defence by Charleville they would have scored on several occasions, before lock Sam Casey broke the tackles of two backs to score near the posts, unfortunately the conversion was narrowly wide of the posts. Killarney looked like they would end the half 12-0 leaders however a succession of penalties lead to a converted Charleville try to leave the score 12-7 to the guests at the break. From the interval, Killarney pressed their advantage and from a succession of penalties, conceded by the hosts Killarney extended their lead to 18 points to 7, from two shots at goal, Charleville were however rewarded with a try late on to leave the score Killarney 18 Charleville 12. Best wishes to Chris Carey who went off injured early in the first half, and congrats to all the lads who put in a fine shift. The U16 KCL final takes place this Sunday at 1pm in Tralee. Seniors: Our seniors played a cracker of a match against Dungarvan last Sunday at Aghadoe in glorious sunshine and in front of a great vocal home crowd. Ger Moynihan’s men started strongly with Brian Lynch crossing the line for the first try of the day. Another try was added by stalwart second row Alan Mulligan before out-half Paudie Sheahan crossed the whitewash to add to the home side’s score. Paul O’Sullivan scored in the closing stages of a hugely dramatic match and the game was tit for tat right across the 80 minutes. With Killarney leading and a few minutes to go, Dungarvan crossed for the lead. Then in a final twist, Killarney won a penalty. Paudie Sheahan cooly stepped up and slotted it away to see the home side win 25 points to 23. A cracker of a match in front of a great vocal and supportive home support. Well done lads. Next Sunday the lads make the short trip to Ballymalis in Listry to take on Killorglin RFC in the Munster Junior League Playoff Final. A coveted promotion to Division 2 is at stake for the winner and Ger Moynihan’s men will be looking to continue the good form of late. So, let’s get to Ballymalis this Sunday and support the lads. Kick off is 2:30pm. Video Night at the Races: Killarney RFC present a night at the races with a twist on Friday the 28th of April next at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. This promises to be a great night of fun and we will have horse races on the big screen with betting on the races sure to bring out the fun on the night. The competition will initially run on a Divisional Basis with the Divisional winners qualifying for the County U 13 Skills Final. If clubs are interested in taking part they are asked to initially run an internal club competition among their U 13 players to determine who represents the club in the Divisional Final. The club competition could take place on the night of a club training session with a station set up to test the U 13 players. Each club will then be asked to send a team of 3 players to their Divisional Final. The idea behind the competition is to get as many players as possible participating through the internal club competition. The competition will encourage players to practice the skills with the main emphasis of the tests being on improving the skill of kicking. The Games Development Administrator in your Division will be in contact shortly to let you know the Date, time and Venue for The Divisional Final in your area. The County Final is due to take place on Thursday 20th April with the winning team being determined by the highest combined scores of the 3 players. I would like to encourage all clubs to take part as it will lead to an overall increase in the skill levels of the young players involved. Contact PJ Reidy GDA South / Mid Kerry with any queries. Senior League: Division 1: Our seniors were away to Rahilly’s on Saturday last. Both Milltown Castlemaine and Kerins O’ Rahilly’s lined out without a number of regulars but still served up a highly competitive affair -with never more than a couple of points separating the teams. Rahilly’s went in up a point at half time on a score of 8pts to 7pts. The second half resumed with an exchange of points that saw Milltown Castlemaine take the lead before an opportunistic goal by Rahilly’s saw them take the lead by 2. Milltown Castlemaine fought back to earn a deserved point after two Kerins O’ Rahilly’s players saw red in their efforts to keep Milltown Castlemaine at bay. David Roche and Pa Wrenn at midfield were outstanding despite conceding height difference to their opponents and defensively Stephen Roche and Nigel Wrenn led from the front. Top scorers on the day were Jonathon O’Sullivan, Cathal Moriarty with Pa Wrenn and Jerome Flynn also contributing. Our seniors are at home to St. Mary’s on April 9th with a 3.00 p.m. start. So why not give them your support. Minor League: Our minors were unlucky in their encounter with Waterville/Dromid on Saturday last. Played in glorious sunshine, the final score was 2:13 to 1:09. Michael Foley opened the Spa tally, followed by his second and a point from the reliable sharpshooter Mike O’Donoghue. A super move by Liam Kearney and Craig Hickey set Michael McCarthy up for Spa’s first goal as points from Craig Hickey and Dan O’Donoghue followed, it was Shane Cronin’s effort that finished to the back of the net before the break to make it Spa 2-8 Listry 0-7 at half-time. Listry opened the second he with an onslaught of points, but Spa replied with seven unanswered scores from Andrew Garnett, Michael Foley (2), Mike O’Donoghue (4). Late scores from Liam Kearney and Mike O’Donoghue put an end to a great result. Lotto Numbers drawn in Jimmy’s Bar, 10,12,18,20. No Winner. Draw next week Arbutus Jackpot €4,800.

Killarney Legion GAA

GIRLS The U14 girls had a fruitful trip to Carrigadrohid during the week taking on Cork kingpins St Vals in a challenge game.18 brave Legion girls made the trip on a frosty night but was well worthwhile outing against a strong St Vals team. Some excellent performances across the team including a number of debuts for some new U14 girls. Congratulations also to Aisling Stack and Keri Ann Hanrahan who played for Kerry u14s last week in their Munster Championship victory over Cork. U16’S: The U16 Girls had a challenge match against Kilcummin under lights at Direen on Wednesday night in very cold conditions, this was their first game this season as they form up for the challenges of County League Division III. The first League game is away to Scartaglen ,followed by a home game against Na Gaeil, home again following that to Ballymac and then the last game of the league away to Glenflesk,Hopefully following on from that campaign there will be a final to look forward to. SENIORS COUNTY LEAGUE Killarney Legion 1-8 Kenmare 1-4 The second game in the county league saw the seniors travel to sunny Kenmare and maintain their unbeaten record. A gale force wind made things difficult for both sides and the contest eventually came down to sheer determination and fitness. Going in leading on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-2 it looked ominous as Kenmare had the benefit of the elements in the second half. However the Legion squad displayed a doggedness and allied to a fine showing by the defence they overcame the setback of a Kenmare goal with 15 mins to go by threatening to hit the net themselves on two occasions. The goal eventually came fittingly from a turnover ball by the Legion backs and a quick move upfield saw the willing Jack O Neill punch to the net - no more than they deserved in fairness.

Discipline and some tidy tackling kept Kenmare to a very manageable total of 1-4 and therein lay the reason for the win. Chris Davies at centre back was outstanding while Finbar Murphy at full forward continues to show great potential.. LOTTO Winning no’s - 2,10,23,24. No winner. Next week’s jackpot - €7,300.

Dr Crokes GAA

Senior County League Division 1 - Round 2 Dr Crokes 3-12 Rathmore 2-12 played in Lewis Road In a game which was played at championship pace we got out on top with an injury time goal. The game looked like ending in a draw as we entered into time added on. Rathmore were on the attack but a great ball win by substitute Brian Fitzgerald led to an attack by us and a wining goal by Tony Brosnan. The teams exchanged points on three occasions in the first ten minutes. A goal by the visitors in the 11th minute put them a goal in front. A goal and a point by Tony Brosnan put us a point ahead at the end of the first quarter. The teams just scored two points each in the second quarter to leave us leading at half time 1-6 to 1-5. Whatever was said to the visitors at half time they came out strongly at the start of the second half. They had three points without reply in the first five minutes of the third quarter. We had a point in the thirty ninth minute but a goal by the visitors two minutes later put them four points clear. We had two points to Rathmore one in the next few minutes to leave the visitors a goal in front at the end of the third quarter. We got back on level terms in the 47th minute when Chris Brady struck for a goal. The game was now there to be won. Both sides sent over a free each and exchanged a point each from play as we entered injury time. Rathmore went on the attack but we won a ball in our defensive area, attacked up field and scored a match winning goal. The highlight for us were Tony Brosnan’s 2-4 from play and goalkeeper Shane Murphy three points from placed balls, two 45’s and a free outside the 45 and his great kick outs which set up many attacks. Our opponents should be disappointed as they probably deserved a draw after giving a great display. Both sides were missing a number of influential players but the quality of the football showed that both sides have plenty strength in depth. Final Night of Progressive 31 Final night of Progressive 31 will be on Wednesday night April 5th in Crokes Clubhouse at 8pm. It will resume again in the Autumn. Impressive was the seventeen points from play out of a total of nineteen during the hour. Next game is away to Legion in two weeks’ time. Team and scorers Kieran Fleming, Sean Brosnan, Donal Maher, William Maher, Mikey O Shea, Daniel O Leary, Jamie O Donoghue, Shane McSweeney, Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy, (0-1) Kelvin Teahan, (0-1) Philip Casey, (0-7 2 f) Paul O Riordan (0-1), Noel Duggan, (0-4) Richie O Connor (0-4) Subs used Matthew Keane (0-1) , Daniel Moynihan, Tadgh Ryan, Dean Cronin. MINOR FOOTBALL Despite losing this co league game the work being done with these young players is progressing well and they kicked some fine scores in an open 13-aside game. 2-13 was a praiseworthy score but by the very open nature of the game the six goals conceded were hard to overcome.
