Brew up support for Killarney Cardiac Response Unit THE opportunity to learn how you can help save a life is on offer thanks to Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. Killarney Advertiser caught up with its volunteers this week to get an update on their experience since the project was launched on August 25. Since going live with the National Ambulance Service (NAS) on that date, Killarney Cardiac Response Unit has attended 54 emergency cardiac calls. “This means 54 lives have been positively impacted, thanks to the dedicated group of volunteers. This amazing service could not be provided only for the group of responders who make it all possible. It takes countless amounts of hours on call, training and fundraising to make this service possible for the town of Killarney,” said co-ordinator Damien Baker. All are welcome to join the unit, which is seeking more volunteers. To raise funds and awareness, it will be holding a coffee morning in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on February 26, from 9am to 11.30am. “We are asking people to pop along and have a cuppa and support us. It is a dual fundraiser and awareness-raising gig,” said Damien. “We are also seeking volunteers to undergo training.” To join you are required to be 18 years of age and living within 6km of Killarney. “You will also need to have access to or own a fully insured vehicle and be interested in saving lives,” said Damien. Damien also paid tribute to Niall Kelleher and Linda Gordon for the continued use of their premises as headquarters at The Courtyard, Fairhill. Training will be commencing on Saturday, February 20, 9am to 6pm, with medical equipment and training provided. All are also welcome to the coffee morning in the Killarney Plaza on February 26. Contact Killarney Cardiac Response Unit on 086-8255280 for further details on volunteering.

In recent years two sections of the railings have been replaced. While this has improved these sections' appearance, it has only served to highlight the complete dilapidation of the remainder. A combined initiative of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Killarney Looking Good and the Church of Ireland parishioners involves the renewal of the railings to the exact same design as before using top quality materials. “In a ‘leap of faith’ in community generosity the decision had been taken to start works in January 2016 with completion planned before St Patrick’s Day,” said Reverend Simon. Donations of all sizes are invited and may be sent by cheque to Robert Harman, Hillcrest, Mangerton Road, Killarney or directly by bank transfer to “St Mary’s Select Vestry” AIB, Main Street, Killarney; BIC: AIBKIE2D; IBAN: IE44AIBK93611145482449.

BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

Dingle Cookery School An Choill, Dingle THE Dingle Cookery School prides itself on personal attention and service, ensuring all customers leave satisfied and with the confidence to cook for themselves. Situated in Dingle town with over 40 classes to choose from, the school offers a wide range of classes to suit all. Why not join expert chef Mark Murphy, current Food Ambassador for Ireland, at one of the classes. Hands-on classes start with tea/coffee and perhaps home-baked goods. An introduction to the class follows. Mark is very keen to reinforce basic skills and fundamentals all the way through. Dingle Cookery School champions local produce, with explanations of each ingredient used and sourcing. Meat comes from a local butcher, fish from the boats in the harbour, and much seasonal produce from local growers and small-holders. Participants work for two-and-ahalf to four hours, before sitting down to eat what’s been made and have some lively discussion. Cookery sessions can be tailored to suit the group. “We do classes for family groups, hen and stag nights, corporate groups and work colleagues. We try to focus on fun and enjoyment as well as the real process of learning. All our stu-

dents go home with a full recipe pack of the dishes made,” said Mark. The school also welcomes food and cookery experts. A favourite is the “Catch and Cook Class”, where participants go out on a boat from the harbour for a couple of hours to fish, and then bring their catch back to the school to prepare, cook and eat. Friday night supper club classes begin on Friday, January 22, and run on a fortnightly basis exploring the cuisine of India, Spain, Italy and Mexico along with curries of the world and modern vegetarian cookery. Other upcoming classes include a Dinner Party Masterclass, Cure, Smoke and Cook, All about Pastry and Healthy Cooking for Diabetics. Question I earn €377 a week and pay Class A PRSI on my earnings. Will I get the new PRSI credit? Answer Starting on 1 January 2016, a new Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) credit applies to earnings between €352.01 and €424 per week. (If you earn less than €352 you do not pay any PRSI.) Previously people who earned very little more than €352 had to pay 4% PRSI on all their earnings. The new credit will reduce the amount of PRSI you have to pay. The credit is tapered and the amount of the credit depends on your earnings. The maximum credit is €12. For example, if you earn €352.01 per week, you will get the maximum PRSI credit of €12. On these earnings of €352.01, your PRSI charge (calculated at 4% of your earnings) would be €14.08. After the €12 credit is deducted, you will pay PRSI of €2.08 instead. If you earn between €352.01 and €424 per week, the maximum credit of €12 is reduced by one-sixth of the amount of your weekly earnings over €352.01. You work out how much PRSI you will pay in four steps. First, calculate one-sixth of your earnings over €352.01. Then subtract this from the maximum credit of €12 to get your PRSI credit. Then calculate the basic PRSI charge at 4% of your earnings. Finally, deduct your PRSI credit from the PRSI charge. The result is the amount of PRSI you pay. For example, for gross weekly earnings of €377: 1. One-sixth of your earnings over €352.01 is €377- €352.01 = €24.99, divided by 6 = €4.17. 2. Subtract this from the maximum credit of €12, giving you a credit of €7.83. 3. The basic PRSI charge is 4% of €377 = €15.08. 4. You will pay €7.25 PRSI weekly in 2016 (€15.08 minus your €7.83 PRSI credit). Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

‘Our Club Could Have Been Completely Wiped Out’ ONE of Killarney’s oldest rowing clubs, Workmen’s RC, is only accessible by boat since the recent storms and flooding and has sustained damage estimated to run to over €60,000. Its chairman, Timmy Moynihan, has warned: “If something like this happens again it could wipe out our club.” The club, situated at Reen Pier, Ross Castle, Killarney National Park, suffered damage to its 200-year-old boathouse and racing boats. Because of its location on the shores of Lough Lein, the members are worried that further flooding will render the boathouse unusable. Members braved the elements in late December to save some of the boats and move them to higher ground. Killarney has a long tradition of rowing on Lough Lein, dating back 260 years. It is a very important amenity in the community. Timmy Moynihan, said: “We cater for over 60 members, including families, youths and volunteers. We are worried for the safety of our members, who train four days a week, all year round. It is a wonderful facility, but the future is uncertain. “We are desperately looking for help, one solution would be the building of an environmentally friendly structure to house the valuable racing and leisure boats, and could also be available for other leisure activities on Lough Lein.” Only for the bravery of club members, Anthony McCarthy, Mickey Joe Burns, Sylvie Barltet and John O’Leary, who rescued what they could of equipment, “the story could have been much worse”, added Timmy. “Flooding also occurred in 2009. We cannot sit back and let it happen again. This flooding was more serious this time, a complete wipe-out. It would be wrong of us to let this happen again as the many young people in the club would be devastated,” said Timmy. MEP Sean Kelly was on hand to view the damage and problems caused by recent storms and flooding at Ross Castle and Lough Lein.

Golf club tees up to prevent future flood damage KILLARNEY GOLF & FISHING CLUB is to take stock and examine what can be done in the short and long term to combat flooding. The club’s manager Cormac Flannery was speaking in relation to the fallout resulting from the floods of December and January. “The club’s capital expenditure plans are currently being reviewed and we’re looking into what can be done in the short and long term. We’ll be putting a plan in place for both as soon as possible,” he said. Flooding at the course started with Storm Desmond on December 5 and remained, cutting off

access until last week following Storms Eva and Frank. The biggest impact of the storms was the hundreds of tonnes of debris which was washed up on the high water line. “Our maintenance team did a great job following Storm Desmond cleaning up the affected areas and we had a hugely successful member clean up on December 19th which had us pretty much cleared up throughout both courses,” added Mr Flannery. “I was amazed by the great spirit shown by our members on the day as the weather was very bad but we still had over 60

people show up. We are very lucky to have such support and the progress made on that day was phenomenal. Sadly Storm Frank hit us since then and we will have to do it all again this Saturday morning, but I have no doubt we will have a strong showing once again and will have the place back to normal in no time. “The courses are drying up quicker than we expected and we hope to have Mahony’s in play later this month, with Killeen to follow by St Patrick’s Weekend in time for the season.”

Climbers with KerryClimbing.ie on Kerry's snow-capped peaks this week.

FORGET about the Alps, winter has well and truly arrived in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and they are looking simply sensational. It is a mountaineer’s paradise up there at the moment, but only for those experienced enough to venture out in these arctic conditions, according to Catherine Kelly of KerryClimbing.ie That means being competent and having the right equipment and skills, she said. “Ice axe and crampons fitted to suitable boots are essential tools before considering venturing into the mountains now and of course knowing how to use them!” added Catherine. “It is a busy time for local mountain guiding company KerryClimbing as normal ascents must be rescheduled and our winter skills courses put in place. Then of course mountaineering and in particular winter mountaineering is our passion so any ‘day off’ is spent heading up into the mountains for some personal icy fun!” You can view further information by checking out www. kerryclimbing.ie, where regular winter conditions updates are also posted for experienced climbers. “Our Facebook page gets a huge amount of interaction and in particular when there is snow on the mountains. We are the only source of publication of winter Climbing conditions reports for the MacGillycuddy's Reeks,” said Catherine. “They prove a vital source of information for experienced climbers looking to get out and make the most of the snow-covered mountains!”

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team Warning IN RECENT days, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team urged climbers to be careful in the snow-covered slopes. It stated: “Conditions on the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks are dangerous at present with deep soft snow in gullies, particularly around Carrantuohill, and ice along exposed ridges.” The rescue team added: “Walkers and climbers are advised to stay away from steep ground in the McGillycuddy's Reeks, unless they are experienced in winter mountaineering and are well equipped for winter conditions. Walkers and climbers are advised to apply this advice to all the high mountains of Kerry at present.”

The Malton Hotel Staff Take A Bow THE red carpet was unfurled for top-performing hotel staff in Killarney over the past week. There were rounds of applause for the dedicated team at The Malton Hotel this week as they were acknowledged for excellence and outstanding customer service. The Malton staff celebrated in style at sister hotel Killarney Royal Hotel as the owners, the Scally family, hosted a thank you meal and night out for their employees’ hard work throughout the year. The annual staff awards ceremony proved a great success as over 100 employees attended for a night of celebration and fun. “The staff awards is an opportunity for employees to be commended for their hard work and outstanding customer service,” said a hotel spokesperson. “Each department nominates an exceptional member of their team for their enthusiasm and commitment.” Mariusz Nowaczyk, a member of the guest services department was the overall Employee of the Year winner. The other awards were as follows: Eugene McGillycuddy – maintenance; Mike McEnery – leisure; Raul Asuncion – kitchen; Natacha Pacheco – accommodation; Betty Doody – accounts/sales; Franziska Cronin – reception; Tom O’Riordan – bar; John Fitzgerald – restaurant; Dora Browne – management; Eoin Foran – conference and banqueting; Kieran Belshaw – guest services/night porter; and Mariusz Nowaczyk – guest services (overall employee of the year). Owner Joe Scally congratulated the individual award winners on their achievements and thanked all the staff for their hard work and dedication throughout 2015. The Malton is currently closed for refurbishment and will be welcoming guests back on Friday, January 22.

Mountain rescue team search on Mangerton KERRY MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM was called to investigate an incident on Mangerton Mountain last week in response to a report that what appeared to be a paraglider or hang-glider crashed near the summit. The team was called out at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon, after a member of the public, who had been walking on the Old Kenmore Road, reported seeing a paraglider or hang-glider appear to crash near the summit area of the mountain. Twenty members of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team carried out sweep searches of the snow-covered summit area. During the evening, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter was tasked to assist with the search, but the weather closed in and they returned to base. No evidence of a crash was found during the search and there had been no report of a missing person. In conjunction with the Gardaí and Irish Coast Guard it was decided to stand down the search at 10pm. Kerry Mountain Rescue Team returned to base at 10.30pm.

Huge support for Mary’s Nepal fundraiser A REAL trip down memory land was on the cards last Friday night as Mary O’Leary hosted a top-class fundraising dance. Some 500 people packed The Gleneagle ballroom and toe-tapping tunes ensured the floor remained full as everyone jived, waltzed and disco-danced the night away. Mary organised the event as she will travel to Nepal next summer to volunteer as part of the Umbrella Foundation project to help schools recover from the devastating earthquake that struck in April. Mary, pre-school leader at Naionra Faithleann, honeymooned in the country over two decades ago and will return to spend six weeks working in communities there. “After news of the earthquake broke last April, I decided I had to do something to help,” she said.

Nepal’s most vulnerable people were left struggling to rebuild their lives last April and Mary will help in the education sector there when she travels there in July. She decided to use her birthday (which has a zero in it) to raise funds for the schools in Nepal. “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who turned out to support it on Friday night last, it was brilliant to see so many familiar faces and it was a real trip down memory lane,” said Mary. “Thank you to all the local musicians who turned up on the night to entertain us. I would also like to pay tribute to my family who gave me such help and support and the wonderful committee who helped me organise everything, the ticket sellers, sound engineers and background

helpers who all gave their time selflessly, The Gleneagle for their kindness, to the local businesses who generously gave spot prizes and all those who donated.” The donations are still pouring in, added Mary. “People's kindness has just overwhelmed me enormously. Many thanks again,” said Mary.

Concerns Expressed In Relation To Killarney Roundabouts ROAD users have expressed concern in relation to roundabouts in Killarney, such as the Cleeny Roundabout, and proximity of pedestrian crossings to the roundabouts. They have also highlighted the difficulty of access on and off the bypass, including from the top of Lewis Road. Older road users in particular fear accessing the Cleeny roundabout. “A number of elderly people have said to me that they get nervous about this roundabout,” said Cllr John Sheahan. “It can be down to the speed some road users are travelling at. Sometimes younger road users don’t seem to realise what effect they’re having on older people.” The proximity to the roundabouts of pedestrian crossings is also a matter for concern, several road users told Killarney Advertiser. “I have raised the issue of the pedestrian crossings near the Cleeny roundabout at council level. The policy comes down from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII – formerly the National Roads

Authority) which wants the traffic to be moving slowly,” said Cllr Sheahan. Councillor Brendan Cronin also said he has had a number of concerns raised to him in relation to the Cleeny roundabout. “These concerns included that exiting from the Reeks Gateway is very difficult due to close proximity of traffic from the Grotto/Allman’s Terrace exit,” he said. “Exiting from the Grotto/Allman’s Terrace is very dangerous for buses and HGVs as they have to cross the two lanes to avoid mounting the footpath by the reeks.” The location of pedestrian crossings so close to exits from roundabouts is another issue

Cllr Brendan Cronin.

that has been highlighted to Cllr Cronin. One local road user noted: “It’s very dangerous if you are coming from the bypass from the Cork direction, going back towards Killorglin. Some drivers come around and have indicated for Killorglin and the next thing they shoot into the Reeks. It can give you an awful fright.” He added: “I also think the pedestrian crossing should be back further, it is too near the roundabout.” One sales rep described his experiences on the roundabout as “a nightmare”. “I’m speaking as someone who drives a thousand kilometres a week. Trying to get

on to it and off it can be difficult, especially after 8am. You can lose half an hour due to the volume of traffic. Also the speed that people enter it when coming off the bypass is a problem,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. He also highlighted the proximity of the pedestrian crossings to the roundabout as hazardous. Senator Marie Moloney said: “It is hard to get on to the roundabout when exiting the filling station and the medical centre and it is also hard to get on to the bypass from Kilcummin. “In addition, when you are coming around the roundabout and want to go onto the bypass, you are watching traffic on the right and you are suddenly on top of the pedestrian crossing, which is just too near the junction. Senator Moloney also said accessing the bypass from the top of Lewis Road is “a nightmare”. Let us know what you think of traffic issues at newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie or 0646632215

KILLARNEY ACTORS IN THE LIMELIGHT ON THE WORLD STAGE

OSCAR NOMINATION FOR MICHAEL FASSBENDER T

HE lead-up to this year’s Oscars will be more exciting than usual in Kerry as Killarney’s Michael Fassbender has been nominated in the Academy Awards’ coveted Best Actor category. Michael was previously Oscar nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2014 for Twelve Years a Slave. Meanwhile, fellow Irish thespian Saoirse Ronan has received the nod for Best Actress for her performance in Brooklyn. The Carlow native was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2008 for her role in Atonement. An unprecedented two Irish films have been shortlisted for Best Film at the year's Oscars. Room, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, and Brooklyn, directed by John Crowley, are among on the 10-strong Best Picture shortlist. Abrahamson is also shortlisted for Best Director. Recent Golden Globe winner Brie Larson was also nominated for her performance in the Irish co-production Room. Room author Emma Donoghue is among the Best Adapted Screenplay nominees for her script of her own bestselling novel, and is joined in that category by English writer Nick Hornby, who adapted Colm Tóibín's Brooklyn for the big screen. The Oscars, hosted by Chris Rock, take place on Sunday February 28.

Glittering times for Michael Fassbender THE awards season is really proving to be an exciting one for homegrown Hollywood star Michael Fassbender. Just days before his Oscar nomination, he bagged a BAFTA nomination for his role in Steve Jobs. He is up against Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Matt Damon, Bryan Cranston and Leonardo DiCaprio. Michael was spotted out and about as he enjoyed a break in Killarney over Christmas before jetting Stateside to accept a coveted International Star Award at the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. His co-star in the movie Steve Jobs, Kate Winslet, presented Michael with the prestigious award. Michael’s dazzling turn as the Apple co-founder and CEO also led to his nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role, Drama, in last Sunday’s Golden Globes.

WAR AND PEACE A TRIUMPH FOR JESSIE

K

ILLARNEY performer Jessie Buckley has been wowing viewers and television critics alike in her star turn in BBC series War and Peace. Jessie, the daughter of Marina Cassidy and Tim Buckley of Muckross, plays Marya Bolkonskaya, a key character introduced in episode two of the BBC epic. Marya is Prince Andrei's (James Norton) sister, a kind young woman who has a tough time living with her distant father on his remote country estate. When Andrei leaves his pregnant wife Lise in her care, she dotes on her and does everything she can for her. While other wealthy women her age have gone out into society, Marya lives in terror of angering her father. And in episode two, she shows some impressively strong will. The Financial Times gave the 25-year-old a rave review as did The Guardian, which noted: “I always think how miserable it must be for actresses to be cast as ‘the plain one’ (especially when they are usually anything but; see America Ferrera when not on the set of Ugly Betty). But Buckley played this beautifully (while managing to look as ‘plain’ as the role demanded) and you could virtually hear cheering across the land she uttered the lines: ‘I thank you for the honour. But I shall never be your son’s wife.’” Super-talented singer and actress Jessie came to fame when she finished second in BBC talent show contest I’d Do Anything. She subsequently starred in West End show A Little Night Music and later graduated from RADA. Jessie went on to play various roles on stage and also acted in Endeavour and Rosamunde Pilcher’s Shades of Love on TV.

Algal bloom on Killarney’s lakes AT THE December meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson called on Government to devise a national protocol in consultation with bodies such as local authorities, the Health Service Executive, Uisce Éireann, Inland Fisheries and the EPA in order to deal with algal bloom outbreaks in lakes. The council replied that it has in place its own protocol for dealing with such outbreaks. These were most recently successfully activated on Lough Leane during the summer of 2015. “The council is most fortunate in having a highly qualified team of experts who undertake the vitally important analysis when evidence of a bloom appears. This allows for prompt action to be taken in order to have appropriate signage erected and public warning notices issued,” it stated. “The developing of a national protocol for algal bloom is a matter for consideration and for cooperation among a number of agencies.” Councillor Gleeson asked that the request would be forwarded to the Government as not all counties have facilities or expertise as advanced as Kerry. This proposal was agreed by the council.

Get In The Saddle For Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle

Front from left are John Rice, Sr Elizabeth Farrell and Sr Helena Lyne (St Joseph's Nursing Home), Tim O'Brien, Chairman, Karena McCarthy, Kieran O'Brien (Pieta House Kerry) and Grace Sheehan (St Ita's & St Joseph's). Cycle vital for charities NOW in its 33rd year, this fundraising cycle to date has raised over €10.6 million for charities that benefit all the communities across the county of Kerry. Michael Moriarty, of St Joseph’s Home, Killorglin, explained how important the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is in their fundraising ef-

forts. “St Joseph’s Home provides vital care for the elderly in the Mid and South West Kerry area,” said Michael. “In order to maintain the high standard of care offered and meet HIQA requirements, in 2017 we need to convert existing three-bed wards to single rooms, which will

require significant investment. “Without the financial support raised through the Ring of Kerry Cycle, this will not be feasible. It is thanks to this one-day fundraising event that we are able to keep our doors open and our valued staff can continue to serve the community.”

NOW’S the time to get on your bike and start training for this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. The 10 main charities that will benefit from the 2016 Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle were announced on Wednesday evening in Killarney. The Kerry-based beneficiaries are South West Counselling Services, St Joseph's Nursing Home, Killorglin, Aras Mhuire, Listowel, St Ita’s & St Joseph's Special School, Tralee, Pieta House, Kerry, the Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Recovery Haven Cancer Respite, St Francis Special School, Derrynane Inshore Rescue, and Talbot Grove, Castleisland. Organisers were “genuinely overwhelmed” by the number of submissions received, said Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe. The charities were chosen after an application process that began before Christmas. “It was hard to choose from so many deserving causes and we would like to thank all the unsuccessful applicants for their efforts,” said Cathal. “The chosen charities provide fantastic support to the people of Kerry and will benefit hugely from the money they receive from this year’s Fundraising effort. Last year over €1.85 million was raised and shared amongst the nine chosen charities as well as 28 smaller charities in Kerry.” Reminding interested participants how this year’s registration process will work, Cathal said: “This year the charities will have a limited amount of places to fill and we cannot reiterate enough that the best chance of getting a place is to register your interest online. Registration for the lottery closes on January 31, leaving less than three weeks for people to register, I would suggest that all interested parties get moving and get registered!” This year’s cycle will take place on Saturday, July 2.

Chairman Enda and senior manager Kieran take the helm at Legion HE STARTED out with Killarney Legion GAA Club as a six year old and 35 years later it was a proud moment for Enda Walshe when he took up office as its chairman at the weekend. Enda and Kieran Cronin, new senior manager, are at the helm following the club’s annual general meeting in the clubhouse last Friday. Enda, who spent three years as vice-chairman and one year as juvenile chairman, said: “The club has come a long way in that time when you see the superb facilities we have, the thriving membership and the on field progress. This is due to the outstanding work of previous

Killarney Legion chairman Enda Walshe.

chairmen, officers, members and executives.” Kieran Cronin, whilst playing for the Kerry under-21s, suffered a career-ending injury which necessitated an extended spell in hospital. Following recovery he kept up his GAA passion by getting involved in coaching. Having been involved in the background of St Michaels Foilmore's All-Ireland Intermediate success he stepped forward to spend four years (one as selector and three as manager with his native club). In that period they cemented their place in the top four of the County League Division 1 and under his management won back-to-back

South Kerry Championships. Having moved to Cork, took up the role of coach with the Macroom senior team and spent two years in that position. He is currently assisting Jack O’Connor preparing the Kerry under-21s based in Cork. His backroom team will be finalised in the very near future. Outgoing chairman Jimmy Reen thanked the committee for its ongoing hard work. In more recent times the club has seen a sharp upturn, noted new chairman Enda, with All-Ireland medal winners (senior men and under-16 girls) All Star and Footballer of the Year Awards.

Michael Gleeson Decision On Election Plans KILLARNEY councillor Michael Gleeson was last night meeting with his party members about whether he plans to contest the next general election. At the Kerry Independent Alliance annual general meeting, the main item on the agenda was whether Councillor Gleeson planned to put his name forward as a Dáil candidate. Cllr Gleeson, a retired teacher, has a very strong polling record and finished just short of 5,000 first preference votes in the 2011 general election. He is also a former Kerry footballer, with three senior county championship medals, a Munster senior championship and All-Ireland senior club championships with East Kerry. Cllr Gleeson also won a Sigerson Cup with UCD and an All-Ireland junior title with

Kerry. He was on the senior team from 1969 to 1972. Cllr Gleeson would not be drawn yesterday on whether he would contest the election but said the matter would be decided during the AGM. In 2015 the party changed its name from South Kerry Independent Alliance to Kerry Independent Alliance.

Kerry candidates to take part in live radio debate KERRY candidates contesting the general election will be grilled on the issues relevant to voters in an outside broadcast with Newstalk Lunchtime on Monday. The broadcast will take place at The Gleneagle Hotel, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Presenter Jonathan Healy and an invited audience will question a number of the declared candidates on the issues of the day, and the issues most prevalent in the Kingdom in 2016. Rural crime, whether the economic recovery has reached the south-west, lost post offices and the effect of emigration are expected topics.

Kevin Murphy signs up for National Women’s Council of Ireland manifesto INDEPENDENT election candidate Kevin Murphy has signed up for the National Women’s Council of Ireland manifesto. Women are always the hardest hit victims of austerity and a prime example here is the cuts to one-parent family payments, said the Killarney candidate. “One-parent families make up 20% of all families in Ireland. Lone parents are more likely than any other social group to be living in poverty even though half of them are working,” said Mr Murphy. “Over 90% of one-payment family payment recipients are women. They are our sisters, our children, our nieces, our neighbours, our friends. They are part of our communities.” Since 2011 the age limit for the payment has been reduced time and again, he added. “In July 2015 it came down to under-sevens only. This cut and the reduction in the age limit, come on top of years of cuts to child benefit and the back-toschool allowance, even after this government said that austerity was over.

He

added: “A lone parent, working 20 hours per week on minimum wage, with one child, will lose a massive €108 per week.” Two thirds of lone parents live in poverty, added Mr Murphy. “Many of those working will be forced to give up their job because of this cut and the age limit reduction,” he said. “One-parent families are caught in a vicious trap. If Lone parents cannot afford childcare while they are at work, they will not work.”

Hats off to pink ladies and gents HEADGEAR of a rosy hue was in vogue in downtown Kenmare during the week as the town launched Pink Hat Day. Kenmare Mart Co-op was the centre of the action and will host the event at 1pm on Monday, February 8. Pink Hat Day is organised in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support, which provides support for those living with cancer, their families and carers. “The aim is make a world record of the largest number of people wearing pink hats at a mart at one time,” said a spokesperson. “The hats have been kindly sponsored by Dairymaster, located in Causeway Co Kerry.”

Thieves strike as family watch television RAIDERS targeted a property in the Muckross area last Thursday night as the family sat watching TV. The burglary took place on Mangerton Road, between 9.45pm and 10.45pm. Chillingly, the couple whose house was burgled were in the residence along with their adult son when the burglars struck. The family only made the discovery when they went into the bedrooms. It is reported that the thieves broke through a bedroom window and robbed a number of bedrooms before making off with cash as well as a handbag containing keys to the couple’s car and home. Muckross Community Association has called a public meeting next week to discuss home security and to introduce a text alert system. There are also fears that criminals involved in such raids are acting on inside tip-offs. If you have any information that will help in the investigation contact Killarney Gardaí on 064-6631222.

Record Numbers Raise Record Funds For Aware

Swimmers taking part in the annual dip in aid of Aware at Dundag.

THEY braved dismal conditions in aid of a good cause and 80 people took the plunge in Dundag, Muckross Lake, on Christmas Day in aid of depression support organisation Aware. The turnout was a record one, said organiser, Tiernaboul woman Niki McCarthy. The fundraiser, organised by Niki, has been taking place on December 25 for the past seven years at Dundag, and generates much-needed cash for Aware. "We’ve raised €5,000 so far this year and I was amazed at the number that

turned out, even those who came to watch!” said Niki. “The event has generated €30,000 for Aware over the past seven years.” Niki organises the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money, who took her own life 11 years ago, aged just 26. “I wanted to do something that celebrated Sylvan’s life. This allows me to remember her and at the same time try to help others who may be suffering,” she said. “I would like to thank lifeguard Derek O'Leary,

the Order of Malta who have provided the ambulance and first aid volunteers every year, the Franciscan Friary for their very generous donations, and MD O'Shea's and Daly's SuperValu who provide the refreshments.” In addition, staff of Penneys collected money for the event instore. Local filmmaker Dennis Earlier also captured the dip on film which can be seen on his Facebook page.

Funding For Kerry Organisations THERE has been a welcome in Kerry for funding announced under a new round of a scheme to support national organisations. This grant scheme provides multi-annual funding towards the core costs of national organisations in the community and voluntary sector to assist them to operate and fund core staff positions. The funding that will be provided will focus on addressing poverty, social exclusion and on promoting equality. Kilcummin-based Labour senator Marie Moloney said: “I am delighted that Government can help the efforts of voluntary organisations. I have worked on this initiative over the years and I am delighted that funding is being provided again this year. This scheme is vital for the community and voluntary sector to support key staff positions. The staff involved do a wide variety of valuable work that enhances Irish society.” The scheme will be administered by Pobal. Further information on the Scheme, including the Application Guidelines, Application Forms and details to register for an information event on January 19 are available at www.pobal.ie There is a budget of approximately €10 million over three years for the SSNO, subject to a number of factors. The amount that organisations can apply for is between €20,000 minimum and €90,000 maximum, and they must show evidence of need.

Kerry’s Chief Superintendent to retire THE county’s Chief Garda Superintendent Pat Sullivan is to retire. Chief Supt Sullivan was promoted to the role in May 2010. Originally from Glengarriff, Co Cork, he has been a member of An Garda Siochana since 1975. Humpback whales on their way to Killarney

Moments in Time

KILLARNEY LIBRARY will screen an acclaimed documentary on humpback whales next weekend. Canola Pictures in association with The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) will present the screening of the film The Humpback Whales of Cape Verde at 2.30pm on Saturday, January 23. Filmed off West Africa, Malta and Ireland the documentary follows GMIT’s Dr Simon Berrow and an international team of marine scientists as they try to prove humpback whales from both the northern and southern hemisphere use the Cape Verde archipelago as a breeding ground. If successful the expedition will change our understanding of whale migration in the Eastern Atlantic. The road show coincides with the 25th anniversary of all Irish waters being declared a whale and dolphin sanctuary, the first of its kind in Europe. By observing how whales thrive and survive in the ocean we have learned a great deal about their social structure and how they communicate with one another. For these marine mammals the development of a healthy society is crucial to their survival. After each screening, experts from IWDG will be on hand to discuss the film and answer any queries from the audience.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘Environmentalists are more concerned about birds and trees than human beings’ MY HEART goes out to those people whose homes were affected by the flooding. It’s a rude awakening for not only the Government but all the county councils around the country. They are going to have to go back to basics. First of all, all rivers are going to have to be tackled and drainage issues looked at, including those of the Nore, the Barrow and the Suir. This is not something that can be done overnight but in the long term this needs to be done. Even looking at the river near the Port Road, you can hardly see the water, it is so overgrown with trees. It appears to me that environmentalists are more concerned about birds and trees than about human beings.

We need to cut out the red tape and baloney. Gullies around the town are blocked up. It is essential such clearing needs to be done on a on a regular basis. I can remember a time, in the 1950s and 1960s, when a man with a donkey and cart would go around carrying out such work. It annoys me to see the state of the rivers. They need to be dredged and cleared out. I heard it was over 100 years since the Shannon had been cleaned. The same applies to all rivers. It’s an eye-opener to everyone. There’s no guarantee this flooding won’t happen again.

Kilcummin pays tribute to Catherine THE death of Catherine O’Leary, 54, came as a great shock to us all. All that was good about Kilcummin and the GAA was evident over the past few days as tributes were paid to her. Kilcummin GAA Club postponed its Pink Night as Catherine, who was one of the ladies committee who was organising the event, passed away on the day of the event.

She was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Kilcummin. The Pink Night will be re-scheduled as that is what Catherine would have wished. Billy Doolan, Kilcummin GAA Club, Via email

Good quality and excellent pricing are key attractions NOW that the ever-more-cutthroat pricing between purveyors of alcohol over the Christmas period is at an end, it is time, once again, to refocus on everyday value. with Portugal, Verdehlo. In its Australian incarnation though, Verdehlo has really come into its own. Highly regarded for the honeysuckle and lime flavours in produces, the blending with chardonnay is as much about grape brand recognition for the customer as about improving the wine itself. Carol by Patricia Highsmith

THERESE is just an ordinary sales assistant w o r k ing in a New York departm e n t s t o r e when a beautiful, alluring woman in her thirties walks up to her counter. Standing there, Therese is whol-

ly unprepared for the first shock of love. Therese is an awkward 19-year-old with a job she hates and a boyfriend she doesn't love; Carol is a sophisticated, bored suburban housewife in the throes of a divorce and a custody battle for her only daughter. As Therese becomes irresistibly drawn into Carol's world, she soon realises how much they both stand to lose. First published pseudonymously in 1952 as The Price of Salt, Carol is a hauntingly atmospheric love story set against the backdrop of 1950s New York.

Sun holiday proposal for travel consultant BY EVE KELLIHER CHOOSING the perfect honeymoon destination was all in a day’s work for bride Lorraine Roche. Lorraine, who worked as a travel consultant for Torc Travel in Killarney before relocating to Limerick, and her bridegroom Brian O’Connor holidayed in the Bahamas and Florida after their recent nuptials. And it was while on another sun holiday, just over a year before, that Lorraine and Brian, a technician and farmer, got engaged. The couple enjoyed a night out in the Vilamoura resort in Portugal watching Kerry win the All-Ireland football final. Lorraine, from Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick, had spent several years living and working in Killarney so the Kingdom’s victory on September 21, 2014, was all the sweeter when on her return to their hotel room, Brian surprised her by popping the question. “Brian had set the scene with champagne and candles on the hotel room balcony,” said Lorraine. She and Brian, from Labasheeda, Co Clare, were married recently in Templeglantine, Co Limerick, and held their reception in The Brehon

Hotel, Killarney. Helping them celebrate were the bride’s parents Patsy and John Roche and the groom’s mother and father Ann and Bernard O’Connor. The bride’s sisters Annmarie Roche and Jane Roche were bridesmaids while the groom’s brother Barry O’Connor and brother-in-law Derek Gallagher lent their support as groomsmen. Lorraine’s cousin Daniel O’Connor and Brian’s nephews Conor and Eoghan Gallagher were pageboys. The bride’s cousin Izzy O’Connor and the groom’s niece Caoimhe Gallagher were flower girls. Guests partied the night away to the sounds of Crystal Swing and Video DJ Donal. “The big day was a great success, flawless. The Brehon did a fantastic job,” said Lorraine. Lorraine’s sister Annmarie took care of the floral arrangements and their aunt Margaret created the brooch bouquet. The bride’s neighbour, Marie Collins, baked the wedding cake. The newlyweds will reside in Co Clare. •If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Aran Sweater Market Introduces the Luxury Aran Cashmere Collection

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan gives an overview of the benefits of toning tables

Relieves stress on joint and muscles THE most obvious benefit of the toning tables is that they relieve stress on joints and muscles. There isn't any jumping or straining of muscles and joints that goes along with more traditional exercising. Tightens muscles The toning table is believed to relax muscles that are overused while tightening underused muscles at the same time. The body is basically repositioning itself with the toning table, which improves the body's form and posture. Improves circulation The toning table can help improve circulation, so it is good for people who are easily fatigued when exercising. The tables can also increase blood and lymph-fluid circulation. Each section performs a different function to manipulate different parts

of the body along with the core muscles in the back and abdomen. The sections are set to specific numbers of movements designed to improve the entire body's muscle tone, circulation and joint flexibility. Improves posture Another great benefit of the toning table is that it actually can re-engineer a person's body posture. Improved body posture is what Stauffer believed would benefit people the most, because it would take away the stress on joints and muscles from bad body positioning and would force other muscles to come into play.

Eliminates toxins The toning table is thought to increase blood and lymph-fluid circulation, which is important because an improved lymphatic system will carry toxins away from the cells and into the lymph nodes much more readily. The lymph nodes filter toxins and send them to the kidneys, where they are released. To book a free one-to-one trial on the toning tables call us on 064-6632966.

URCHASING an Aran sweater is a fashion statement as well as an investment in one’s ancestry. The Aran Sweater Market has just unveiled its latest offering with its collection of luxury Aran with cashmere. The collection offers a range of both classic and contemporary Aran sweaters, cardigans and accessories made from a unique blend of wool and cashmere for extra comfort and softness. “This range is perfect for those that love the look of Aran but may not like the feel of pure new wool against their skin, as these have a snugly soft and luxurious feel,” said brand manager Laura MacSweeney, Killarney. of the more traditional Aran styles such as the classic Fisherman Sweater in báinín white as well as more modern styles such as the Troyer and Shawl Neck Collar Sweater for men, whilst also featuring more fashionable fitted knits with ornate Aran detailing for women. The range marries the elements of traditional Aran, which the brand prides itself on, with modern taste, whilst still retaining the high quality we have come to expect from authentic Aran knitwear. “As a brand, we recognise that today’s market has a huge appreciation for Aran, however many people still have a preference for more fitted and fashionable knits which is why this collection strikes the perfect balance between the two,” said Laura. .

Feeling a bit stressed?

Yoga can help! Elaine O’Donoghue of Navé Yoga explains how yoga can benefit you DID you know that deep breathing and matching movement with breath, just as is done in vinyasa classes, strengthens all of the muscles of the respiratory system, increasing its efficiency and expanding lung capacity, clearing the nasal passages and calming the central nervous system? This calming of the central nervous system makes us more relaxed and counteracts the effects of stress by allowing the immune system to recover and function more effectively. It increases the blood flow to the organs and glands and reduces muscle tension. Blood flows in the body more easily when the body is relaxed. So while you are de-stressing and breathing deeply in a vinyasa practice you are also toning your body, building strength and releasing toxins through your yoga practice. There is a lot more to yoga than the external benefits that we see on the outside, there are many internal benefits too. Yoga is excellent as a complementary practice to sports such as swimming, running, gym, football and cycling, as it helps to stretch and lengthen the muscles that these sports can tighten and it makes the body more flexible and therefore less prone to injury. We have classes for beginners right through to advanced and a range of teachers so check us out today at www.naveyoga.com or call on 087-2601624

How to look and feel your best Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio offers advice on how to look and feel your best with the help of toning tables IF YOU are trying to keep those New Year’s resolutions to get fit, like most of us having used the excuse it's raining or tomorrow, you have no excuse now we are offering a free trial for everyone to see for yourself the amazing benefits of toning tables. Looking for a good, thorough workout without running down the body and increasing the probability of injury? Many trainers believe that toning tables represent such a breakthrough. But, is this just another case of something that’s too good to be true? How can a machine that seemingly does all the work for you be an effective mode of exercise? EXPLOITING YOUR STRETCH REFLEX Toning tables support a form of passive exercise and work by exploiting your body’s natural stretch reflex. Every muscle automatically reacts when it’s stretched out, whether done so through nerve signals from the brain, or from an outside apparatus. By taking

course on how to best execute every facet of your routine. EASE INTO YOUR REGIMEN In addition to helping avoid injury, toning tables are also ideal for those who are just coming off an injury and looking for a low-impact program (in order to get themselves back into shape). Jill Duggan.

your body repeatedly through the motions of normal exercise, toning tables improve overall strength motor response even in the absence of the apparatus. PROPER TECHNIQUE One of the main benefits of using toning tables is that they promote proper exercise technique. Most exercise and sports related injuries are attributable to poor technique. Toning tables are perfect for beginners because they literally walk you through each exercise step by step. Even if you’re more experienced, these devices offer a perfect refresher

NO PAIN, NO GAIN It should be noted, though, that in order to get the most out of a workout regimen that includes use of toning tables, you must not let the machine do everything for you. You still must exert yourself as you let the machine guide you through the process. In fact, that’s an excellent metaphor for what these devices should be seen as: guides. As with every new regimen, you are encouraged to consult your physician before diving in full speed ahead.

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F WHY DID IT HAPPEN? The head of Cologne’s police force has been suspended from his post as anger continues to mount over the handling of mass sexual assaults in the city on New Year’s Eve. New Year's Eve in Cologne rapidly descended into chaos involving sexual assault and theft, most of it apparently committed by foreigners. It has launched a bitter debate over immigration and refugees in Germany, one that could change the future not just of Germany but Europe. According to Spiegel, a lot happened on New Year's Eve in Cologne, some of it contradictory, some of it real, some was coincidence, some was exaggerated but all of it was horrifying. In its entirety, the events of Cologne on New Year's Eve and in the days that followed brought events to a head which many people has anticipated, feared and hoped would never happen. But it did happen and it cannot be undone. The fears of both immigration supporters and virulent xenophobes came true. The fears of PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident) and their opponents starkly exposed. For some, the events finally bring to light what they have always been saying: that too many foreigners in the country bring too many problems along with them. For the others, that which happened is what they have been afraid of from the very beginning: those ugly images of ugly behavior by migrants would endanger what has been a generally positive mood in Germany with respect to the refugees. Though the happenings in Cologne are unclear, it is obvious that difficult days lie ahead. Germany must ask if it can handle the influx of refugees and the people must decide if they want to become the country in Europe with the greatest number of immigrants. Gangs of men described by some of the alleged victims as being of North African or Arab descent are reported to have robbed, threatened or sexually assaulted 121 women as revellers partied near the city’s Gothic cathedral. The consequence of their actions could easily trigger a radical shift in Germany's refugee and immigration policies. The pressure built up by the images and stories from Cologne make it virtually impossible to continue on as before. The pressure would be no less intense even if not a single one of the refugees and migrants who arrived in 2015 were among the perpetrators. Because of Cologne, it doesn’t matter whether they are refugees, asylum seekers, migrants or foreigners or whether they are friendly or evil or long-term residents, the fear now is that xenophobia will find fertile ground and that there will be long-term repercussions. The happenings on the square between the Cologne Cathedral also exposed the state’s powerlessness in the face of chaos and crime. Two months after the attacks in Paris, one can have one's doubts as to whether Cologne represents a "completely new dimension of violence," as has been repeated by both police officials and politicians. What is clear, however, is that the police were unprepared and that they failed. The officers on site were reduced by the circumstances they faced to playing a pitiable role. The right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany and the xenophobic movement Pegida have been critical of refugee policies and the perpetual problem of violence against women. German federal police have confirmed that at least 32 people are suspected of playing a role in the violence on New Year’s Eve, 22 of whom are in the process of seeking asylum. Of the 32 suspects, nine were Algerian, eight Moroccan, five Iranian, and four Syrian. Three German citizens, an Iraqi, a Serb and a US citizen were also identified. Authorities are growing increasingly concerned by the rising number of sex attacks against women by gangs of migrants which initially happened in Germany and have spread across Europe. Women have been warned not to go out at night alone after sex attacks similar to those in Cologne, Hamburg and Stuttgart were reported in Finland, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland. And yet, it still isn't entirely clear what actually happened on New Year's Eve in Cologne. Or why.

PETIT SAC POUR LE CHIEN, SVP! You may find asking for one problematic but doggy bags may finally become an established part of eating out in France with restaurants across the country now legally obliged to provide them. The new law, which came into effect on New Year’s Day, is part of a drive to cut down on the vast amount of food wastage seen in the country each year. The French restaurant industry alone accounts for some one million tonnes of food waste annually, according to government figures. But from now on, larger dining establishments – those with around 150 covers a day and more – will have to provide a doggy bag or take-away box for any customer that asks for one. It forms part of an initiative launched by the French government in 2013, with the aim of reducing food wastage by 50 percent by the year 2025. Despite the law change, getting the average French diner to carry their leftover coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon home with them could prove a challenge, however. While doggy bags are a mainstay of dining out in countries around the world, particularly in the United States, they are practically unheard of in France. The French do not even have their own

term for the concept, instead referring to “le doggy bag”. A regional government survey conducted in 2014 found that while 75 per cent of French people are open to the idea of doggy bags, 70 per cent have never taken leftovers home with them. For many, asking for a doggy bag at a high-end restaurant is seen as something of a faux pas, while some chefs also have a problem with the idea of their immaculately presented dishes being scraped off into a bag or box. “In France, the obstacle is mostly cultural,” a government-commissioned report into food wastage released this year said. “The majority of diners don’t dare to ask for the leftovers of their meal, while the restaurateurs see it as a ‘degradation’ of their dishes.” However, French authorities and the restaurant industry are seeking to change perceptions. An initiative launched in Paris in December saw 100 restaurants adopt the use of doggy bags. Meanwhile, the hotel and restaurant industry union UMIH has been promoting the use of the term “le gourmet bag” to replace “le doggy bag” in an attempt to give the concept an image makeover in the eyes of French customers.

FAMILY SEARCHES FOR MISSING DIARMUID

THE devastated father of a missing man, Diarmuid Twomey, is to leave his home in Rathmore after the disappearance of his son before Christmas and the death of his wife a week ago. Diarmuid Twomey, 31, grew up on a farm with his parents Jim and Anne, in Annagh, east Kerry. He went missing in the early hours of December 20 when he failed to return home to Carrignavar, Cork, where he now lives with his partner, Ciara Byrne, and their two children. Diarmuid travelled from Cork regularly to care for his parents who had been staying in sheltered housing provided by the local Rathmore Social Action Group. Anne Twomey tragically passed away on January 6, just two weeks after Diarmuid was last seen. Jim, who is in his mid-70s and a wheelchair user since suffering a stroke, has now moved to residential care in Cork. Gardaí have appealed for information in tracing the whereabouts of Diarmuid, who is described as 6ft tall, of stocky build, with dark brown hair. When last seen he was wearing a blue check shirt, beige chinos and brown runners. You can contact Gardaí at Gurranabraher Garda Station, 0214946200, or the Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666 111.

FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD 1916

Bowie’s last release, Lazarus, a ‘parting gift’

Of course it is right and proper that we celebrate the centenary of 1916. I fear, however, that we are in danger of losing sight of what actually happened back then, as those historic events are being shrouded by television analysts and newspaper columnists who are commenting on it as if it were a recent cup tie. What’s done is done. We remember the bravery and heroism of the men and women of 1916, the enormity of the task they faced and the huge debt we owe them. Their motives and their actions are being scrutinised at this distance in time by commentators who should know better. I have, at times, wondered how the insurgents felt at that time. Did they really believe they could take on the might of the British Empire or did they really believe that theirs was to be a blood sacrifice? Did they really believe they were going out to die? Is it possible to have so strong a conviction that it would lead to certain death? Of course it’s impossible to properly understand them as any revision benefits from the benefit of

hindsight. We can look back because we know the outcome but they didn’t. They must have known the futility of their actions and that their deaths were inevitable. And yet, does any one of us really believe we are going to die? 1916 was very much a Dublin event. As we know, the planned Rising was cancelled at the last minute and Volunteers all over the country were stood down. 10,000 Volunteers were ready, all over the country, for Easter Sunday 1916, when the order for the Rising was countermanded. The sinking of the Aud and the capture of Casement put paid to any rising in Cork and Kerry as the “20,000 rifles” on the Aud were destined for the Men of the South. Apparently, the guns were obsolete Russian rifles captured on the Eastern Front and had seen the best of their days. Indeed, it is said that Casement himself was so unconvinced of German support and of the usefulness of the cargo that he intended to have the Rising called off.

ALARM BELLS RBS has advised traders to "sell everything" in an alarming research note that warns of a global deflationary crisis. That would mean prices start to decline, creating a vicious cycle where people hang onto their money rather than invest it in the economy. “Sell everything except high quality bonds. This is about return of capital, not return on capital. In a crowded hall, exit doors are small,” RBS said in a note to clients. RBS said that major stock markets could fall by a fifth and that oil may plummet to $16 a barrel. Oil flirted with $30 a barrel on Tuesday in lows not seen for over a decade. Morgan Stanley, the American investment bank, said that Brent would slide further to $20 a barrel on currency alone, because the dollar is gaining in value, and oil is valued in dollars. Oil has already lost 11 per cent of its value so far this year. The FTSE 100 is suffering its worst start to the year in four decades. Sharon Bell, a Goldman Sachs European

equities strategist, told the BBC that European stocks were so cheap that they were an attractive buy for medium term investors, proving it's not all sell, sell, sell. Chinese deflationary fears are weighing on investor sentiment. Trading of Chinese shares was halted twice last week when an automatic circuit breaker kicked in following losses of 7 per cent. China then removed the circuit breaker over fears it was making the situation worse. China shares suffered another brutal start to the week on Monday, dropping a further 5 per cent. RBS said that China was at the centre of global stress. “As China slows, as it now is doing now that the credit binge comes home to roost, it is taking the world with it. This is your number one theme for 2016, without any question in my mind,” Andrew Roberts, part of the interest rate team at RBS, said in the note. Roberts' team first warned about another slowdown in November. It said the US Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates had hastened the decline.

DAVID BOWIE'S final record was a carefully orchestrated farewell to his fans, his producer has confirmed. Lazarus, released on the Bowie's 69th birthday just two days before his death, opens with the lyrics: "Look up here, I'm in Heaven!" Its video, which will be viewed in a very different light by millions of fans following his death, features the musician in a hospital bed, and finishes with him retreating in to a dark closet. Tony Visconti, the producer who worked with Bowie to complete his final album, has released a statement saying it was deliberately created and timed as a "parting gift" for his fans. In a statement on his Facebook page, he said: "He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way.”

Alan Rickman dies aged 69 ACTOR Alan Rickman, known for films including Harry Potter, Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has died at the age of 69, his family has said. The star had been suffering from cancer, a statement said. He became one of Britain's best-loved acting stars thanks to roles including Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films and Hans Gruber in Die Hard. Harry Potter author JK Rowling led the tributes, describing him as "a magnificent actor and a wonderful man". She wrote on Twitter: "There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman's death." She added: "My thoughts are with [Rickman's wife] Rima and the rest of Alan's family. We have all lost a great talent. They have lost part of their hearts." Emma Thompson, who appeared with Rickman in productions including Love Actually and was directed by him in The Winter Guest, said he was "the finest of actors and directors" and "the ultimate ally".

Condition of Tralee Courthouse raised in the Dáil KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae raised the issue of Tralee Courthouse in the Dáil this week. Replying to his parliamentary question, the Minister for Justice & Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, made a statement about the condition of Tralee Courthouse and its environs. “I am informed that the Courts Service is very aware of the accessibility issues and the limited facilities at Tralee Courthouse,” said Minister Fitzgerald. “The Courts Service has stated that it is not be possible to provide appropriate facilities including full accessibility within the site of the current courthouse due to the nature of the building and the restrictions of the site. “The Courts Service proposes to build a new courthouse in Tralee, however they have advised that this will be dependant on securing an alternative site and the availability of funding. This will enable the Courts Service to provide improved facilities for all users and also allow the issue of accessibility to be addressed comprehensively.”

Average price of semis rises in Kerry

"

THE price of the average three-bed semi detached house in Kerry has risen by 4.12% to €177,000 in the last three months, a nationwide property survey has found. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the end of the selling season in December. REA agents in Kerry are predicting a fur-

ther 8.8% rise in prices in 2016, after a rise of 16.07% in the price of the average three-bed semi in 2015. According to Donal Culloty from REA Coyne & Culloty in Killarney, prices will rise as no new houses are being built. The average semi detached house nationally now costs €188,370, the Q4 REA Average House Price Survey has found – a slight rise on the Q3 figure of €186,102. “The market is improving and we are of the opinion the same will continue to improve into 2016,” said Eddie Barrett

from REA North’s Tralee. “If supply does not match demand as is the current situation, it will create further price increases.” Prices in Dublin city and county fell by -0.75% in Q4, while Dublin city alone fell by -0.69% – the average three-bed semi now costing €357,500. However, the biggest growth was in the rest of the country outside the commuter belt and larger cities, where house prices increased by 0.95% in the last three Donal Culloty. months.

Can New Car Sales For 2016 Hit The Heights Of The Boom? WITH new car sales up 30% for the second year running can the increases continue this year? The latest figures for new car sales in 2015 show the Irish market is up 30% year on year. The industry had estimated total sales of approximately 115,000-120,000 units at the start of 2015 and the final tally has exceeded these predictions yet again. This is the second year running that sales have increased by a factor of 30% as the recovery in the motor trade has met and exceeded expectations. Just short of 125k (125,950) new cars were registered in 2015, up from 96k units in 2014 which was also a 30% increase on 74k units registered in 2013. It has been a long road back from the highs of 2007 when 186k new cars were sold. But can these levels of increases continue and will the motor trade reach the heady heights of 2007 this year? New car sales fell in 2009 and despite increases, which were artificially supported by scrappage, in 2010 and 2011 sales decreased again 2012 and 2013 and it’s really only in the last year that the motor trade has returned to healthy new car sales levels. Whether the levels seen back in 2007 are reached or not, another year of positive growth is being predicted by the sector. The light Commercial and HGV sectors also experienced year on year increases up 42% and 9% respectively. Sales of used cars decreased year on year and with the Euro weak against sterling used car imports also decreased by almost 12% meaning the lack of used stock is more pronounced. Some 71% of new cars sold were diesel whilst 27% of new cars sold were petrol. However petrol sales increased by 40% whereas Diesel sales only increased by 26%

TOYOTA ADOPTS FORD SMARTDEVICELINK SOFTWARE A FIRST wave of automakers and industry suppliers – led by Toyota Motor Corporation – is adopting Ford SmartDeviceLink software. This is regarded as a huge step toward giving consumers more choice in how they connect and control their smartphone apps on the road. SmartDeviceLink is the open-source software on which the Ford SYNC® AppLink™ platform is built. It provides consumers an easy way to access their favourite smartphone apps using voice commands. Automotive suppliers QNX Software Systems and UIEvolution also are adopting the technology, with plans to integrate it into their products. By adopting this Ford technology, automakers and suppliers are helping accelerate an industry standard that will increase the number of apps available for in-vehicle use. With common industry software, devel-

opers can focus on creating the best experience on one platform – SmartDeviceLink – which will be available to customers of many brands. PSA Peugeot Citroën is investigating adding SmartDeviceLink to its vehicles. Automakers Honda, Mazda and Subaru also are considering adding the software. “The true benefit of a common smartphone app communications interface is that it creates an industry standard – enabling great experiences for customers while allowing different companies the freedom to differentiate their individual brands,” said Don Butler, Ford executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services. “Ford is making the software available as open-source, because customers throughout the industry benefit if everybody speaks one language.”

Financial services company gears up for future growth

FINANCIAL services company JRI America Inc, which established a software development operation in Tralee in 2011, this week geared up for the next phase of growth in the town with a move to new, larger premises at Kerry Technology Park. The new premises were officially opened by Minister for Diaspora Affairs Jimmy Deenihan. JRI America, Inc, is a subsidiary of the Japanese IT financial services company Japan Research Institute

Ltd. (JRI) which is the specialist IT subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG). SMFG owns Japan’s second-largest bank Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) by asset size and is a Fortune Global 200 company. It offers a broad range of financial services, primarily banking related. The group is also engaged in leasing, securities, credit cards, mortgage securitization, venture capital and other credit related

businesses. SMFG employs 68,000 people worldwide with a stated objective of further global expansion. The Tralee operation supports the group’s Western Hemisphere IT operations including US, Europe, Moscow, Dubai and other markets. The team in Tralee has grown to almost 70 staff since the initial announcement in late 2011 with the staff employed there providing support for a broad range of

Applause for Killarney’s gangsters and molls IT PROVED a real talking point over the past month and tributes are still pouring in for Killarney’s budding young singers, dancers and actors who brought Bugsy Malone to life. One of the most popular musicals ever made, Bugsy Malone was staged in Killarney Racecourse for four nights. The production was performed by transition-year students from St Brendan’s College and St Brigid’s

Presentation Secondary School. “This was the first time that both schools have worked together on a musical and it was the performance of the year!” said Mairead Lucey, deputy principal of St Brigid’s. Bugsy Malone is a 1976 British musical gangster film, which was directed and written by filmmaker Alan Parker. “The success of the film, which famously featured an all-child cast, inspired numer-

ous stage productions around the world,” said Mairead. Set in prohibition-era New York, the film is loosely based on events from the early 1920s to 1931 but specifically on the exploits of real-life gangsters like Al Capone and Bugs Moran, as dramatised in cinema. The students were directed by Valerie O’Leary, Mish O’Donoghue, Niamh O’Connell and Rosie Healy and supported by the staff in both

The move to the new 14,000sq ft premises is part of its strategic plan to position the company for growth into the future in Tralee. Business Sentiment In Tourism Sector ‘At Levels Not Seen Since The Celtic Tiger’

Michael Cawley, chairman, and Shaun Quinn, CEO, Fáilte Ireland.

ACCORDING to Fáilte Ireland’s latest Barometer Survey business sentiment across the tourism sector is now at levels not seen since the Celtic Tiger and expectations for the 2016 season are very upbeat with strong growth projected across all parts of the industry. Irish tourism is now well placed to deliver significant employment and foreign earnings growth to 2020 and beyond provided we maintain competitiveness and sustain investment in the new portfolio of tourism brands now coming to market. This was the key message delivered this week at Fáilte Ireland’s Annual Tourism Industry Review. The recent upturn in tourism fortunes, although very welcome, has been fuelled largely by factors external to the tourism industry. Improving economies of key source markets, favourable exchange rates and increased air

access all contributed to making 2015 a record year. To build on this initial success, the next phase of growth must be driven by factors from within the sector including; sustaining better value for money and offering more compelling and authentic branded visitor experiences rather than relying on a hazy green image and warm welcome. With recent Fáilte Ireland branding initiatives just entering the market (The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East and Dublin - a Breath of fresh Air), it is expected that two key objectives of Fáilte Ireland can be achieved: significant growth in visitors can be secured across all regions with targeted marketing of specific consumer segments; and the tourism season can also be lengthened – significantly boosting visitor numbers and revenue. Optimism for the years ahead, however, needs to be tempered by the fact that challenges remain in the sector. Speaking at the briefing in Fáilte Ireland’s HQ, chairman Michael Cawley said: “In 2015, driven by benign external factors and competitiveness at home, we experienced a record year for overseas visitors. However, I believe that further growth is yet to come as we deploy our new brand offerings to greater effect in helping Ireland to become more compelling as a holiday destination within an intensely competitive marketplace. “The Wild Atlantic Way has been a great success locally but its impact internationally remains quite modest. If awareness levels across key markets are increased appreciably over the next few years, then the true potential of the Wild Atlantic Way as a driver of tourism growth to the West of Ireland will be realised. Similarly, our Ireland’s Ancient East brand is only taxiing up the runway and it too can, and will, deliver game-changing growth for the East, Midlands and South. Thirdly, in the Capital, there is considerable potential to sustain tourism growth provided we can successfully reposition the city and county as a more vibrant destination with our new Dublin brand.” To underscore his point, Mr Cawley highlighted the recent consumer research commissioned by Fáilte Ireland which indicates that, currently, awareness of key Irish visitor attractions is much lower than many commentators might expect.

Will those who think of Bernie today, A little prayer to Jesus say. Sadly missed and remembered by his wife Sheila and family.

prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. B.L.

NOVENA to st. Claire Ask St. Claire for 3 favours, one business, two impossible and say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with lighted candle. Pray whether you believe or not. Publish on ninth day. Powerful Novena. May the sacred heart of Jesus be praised, adored, glorified and loved today and every day throughout the whole world forever Amen. Say six times daily for nine days. Your request will be granted no matter how difficult it may seem. Favour publication must be promised. B.L.

precious mother of jesus Mother of Divine Grace, you can find a way, where there is no way. Please hear my prayer and grant me my request. (Say 6 times daily & your request will be granted). B.L.

When we all get together, we laugh, we cry, we remember you Ian with that great big smile. We will comfort one another here As your nana and grandad comfort you.

Memories drift to scenes long past, Time rolls on but memories last, Sunshine passes, shadows fall, Love and remembrance outlasts them all. Always loved and sadly missed, Grandad O’Riordan.

Until we meet again, I ask God to protect and comfort you and the ones you loved so much. Your Aunt Sheila and cousin Paul.

3rd anniversary O’Riordan

We love you so much. Everywhere we go, we know you are always with us. If we would go to the beach we would write your name in the sand, watch the waves come in and see your name slowly fade away. It is a reminder of how cruel life can be and how our time here on earth is so short, so enjoy every moment while you can. We love and miss you everyday but we know you are beside us every step of the way. We miss and love you lots, Ger, Noreen, Sarah and Laura.

3rd anniversary O’Riordan

In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013. Unendingly I mourn my precious son Too early yet this earthly home he left, Perfidious sleep confounded nature’s order To leave his loves perpetually bereft. Those golden dreams and aspirations, The seed of yesterday a withered bloom, Those baubles which are cause to celebrate, In death now mock us gently from his tomb. How treacherous death does steal on youth’s exuberance, To wreak such havoc from the ecstasy of life, Where once was only joy and future promise Tormented hearts endure eternal strife. Sadly missed by your father John, brother Liam, sisters Melissa and Saerlaith and by Treasa.

Memorare to st. Anne Remember, Good Saint Anne whose name means grace and mercy, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence I come before you, sinful and sorrowful, Holy Mother of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and loving grandmother of the Saviour do not reject my appeal but hear me and answer my prayer. Amen B.L.

Our hearts are full of memories With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same. Those special days will not return When we were all together But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever.

In loving memory of a dear sister Noreen, who died on 20th of January 1968. R.I.P. Time and years go gently by, But love and memories never die, No longer in our lives to share, But in our heart you are always there. “Forever young.” Always remembered by Sheila and family.

In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013. Even in our darkest days, Since we’ve been apart, Memories of the times we shared, Help to warm our hearts. Everyday we miss the smile, That no one can replace, But still it brings us comfort, In the sadness that we face. Life is full of mysteries, That no one can explain, But we know someday, somewhere, We will meet again. Until we do we’ll find the strength, To live through each new day, Grateful for the happy years before you went away. Sadly missed by Bernie, Mohammed, Allanah and Laila. xx

Silent memories keep you near As time unfolds another year Out of our lives you may be gone But in our hearts you still live on.

Your mother is always with you She is the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street. She is the smell of certain foods, flowers you pick and the fragrance of life itself. She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well. She’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She’s the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep and the colours of the rainbow. She’s your mornings and your nights, Your mother lives inside your laughter. She is the place you come from, your home and she’s the map you follow with every step you take, she’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you, not time, not space, not even death.

If roses grow in heaven Lord Please pick a bunch for us, Place them in my Mother’s arms And tell her they are from us. Tell her we love and miss her And when she turns to smile Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while. Because remembering her is easy We do it everyday But there is an ache in our hearts That will never go away.

Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky. Though heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always there to guide us, And forever in our hearts.

No length of time can take away, Thoughts of you from day to day, Though absent you are always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear.

38th anniversary

8th anniversary

In loving memory of Johnny Murphy, 2 Lower Sunnyhill, Killarney who died on 21st of January 2008.

In loving memory of Pat O’Mahony, Ballydowney and Knockeenduve who died on the 20th January 2015.

Togetherness Death is nothing at all – I have only slipped away to the next room Whatever we were to each other, that we are still Life means all that it ever meant It is the same as it ever was There is absolutely unbroken continuity All is well. Nothing is passed, nothing is lost One brief moment and all will be as it was before – only better Infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ.

God gave us strength to bear it And courage to fight the blow What it has meant to lose you God alone will ever know. Our family chain is broken Nothing seems the same But as God calls us one by one The links shall join again. Always remembered and forever loved, Your loving daughters Louise, Denise, Martina, Deirdre, Helen and sons John Paul and David, sons-in-law Timmy and Gerry, Claire and Kathyrn.

13th anniversary lyne

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Sean, JJ., Margaret, Diarmaid, Dan, Ena, Martin, Helen and nieces & nephews, Ashling, David, Cliodhna, Sadhbh, Jamie & Teddy. Anniversary Mass, St. Mary’s Cathedral, at 6.15pm on Friday, 22nd January, 2016. In loving memory of my dear wife Eileen Lyne late of Pinewood, Killarney who died on the 15th January, 2003.

Miracle prayer Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted.

A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God could have spared you If just for a few more years. A silent grief that’s in my heart No human eye can trace For many a broken heart is hid Beneath a smiling face. Always loved and remembered by your husband Denis.

Shane O’Donoghue It is with great sadness that we announce the death has occurred in the USA of Shane O’Donoghue, the son of the late Laurence O’Donoghue and grandson of Roddy and Joan O’Donoghue of High Street, Killarney. Men’s Committee announcement re Course clean-up Club Captain Liam Hartnett and Lady Captain Mary O’Rourke wish to advise all of those persons who may be interested that the proposed next course clean up will take place on Saturday next, the 16th of January, and similar to the previous clean-up which took place on the 19th of December last, all are requested to come to the maintenance sheds at 8.30am where Course Manager Enda Murphy and his maintenance crew will be on hand to indicate what work will be undertaken, where to go, and what needs to be done. Please bring with you either a pitch fork, a rake or a shovel, whichever you will be most comfortable using, and it is envisaged that the “work shift” will end at approximately 12.30pm when soup and sandwiches will be served once again at the clubhouse as a small gesture of “thank you” from the Club. If you are unable to come at 8.30 then please come along at whatever time that you may be available, and you are only being asked to do as much as you may feel comfortable with. Captain Liam Hartnett has advised that some of our neighbouring Golf Clubs have indicated their willingness to help out and to participate in the clean-up, and all are most very welcome, and a

special thank you goes to the crew of 6 Dooks Golf Club members who assisted so very willingly in our previous cleanup in December. It is very much hoped that as much of the work required will be carried out on the day as possible, Enda Murphy was most thankful to all of those who assisted in the December clean-up when over 60 intrepid persons participated, despite working in atrocious weather conditions, that work was carried in a great spirit of good humour and camaraderie and he very much hopes for at least a similar, if not even bigger turn out next Saturday, Enda says that the amount of work that was completed on the last occasion was just staggering, and he is once again hoping very much for a similar effort which will almost completely “break the back” on what needs to be done to get our Golf Courses back up and running and in good shape as quickly as possible.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Firstly on commencing our notes for 2016, may we thank all the many people who contributed so generously, in adverse weather conditions it must be said, to our annual collection on the weekend of the 02nd/03rd January, Your assistance is greatly appreciated as we conduct our affairs in 2016 and beyond for the generations to come .It was very interesting to note as well the amount of people, anglers and the non angling fraternity, who commented that they looked forward to the opening day of the Salmon season ,the 17th January, as a marker in the calendar when the days are lengthening and activities again commencing out of doors. It seems very fitting to commence communications on the opening week of the Salmon Season and on that note may we wish all anglers a very Safe Season and Tight Lines. We have had our AGM on the 07th January and the following personnel have been returned to office as a result: Chairman: DJ O’Riordan Secretary: Mike Doody Treasurer: Gary Fleming Committee: Mike Connor, Pat O’Callaghan, Liam Buckley, Pat Casey, Gerry Bambury, Stuart Steadwood, Tony Sugrue. As part of the AGM, we had updates from the various affiliated bodies and we received some interesting news from FISSTA ( Federation of Irish Salmon and Sea Trout Anglers )presented by their Treasurer Donal Doherty, relating to the massive fish farm plans afoot for Galway Bay. It would appear that after some very effective works by said organisation along with other like-minded parties -BIM have withdrawn their application for the colossal farm. This has been a great achievement, both for the potential saving on the environment and also the future of salmon smolts on our coast. While Donal did sound a cautionary note that a new BIM application for a smaller undertaking may well appear for that location, it would also meet with a united resistance ably assisted by FISSTA. More local to us as well, a licence granted for a 5000 Ton fish farm in nearby Bantry Bay has been appealed to the aquaculture appeals board, with hopefully sufficient grounds to force a reapplication on behalf of the applicant there and again buying time for Salmon and the Environment. Our AGM moved a vote of acknowledgement for the great efforts put in by the officers of the FISSTA organisation in their sterling efforts on behalf of anglers and the environment. A great concern voiced again at the meeting was the need to get more legislation in place to protect the Salmon Stocks and to this end, the club would be following up on the instigating of an exclusion zone on county estuary waters for any aquaculture licence for fish farms. With an eye as well to associated matters and upcoming training courses , if any members are interested in following up from their initial training with the Children in Sport course, the next level of “Club Children’s officer “ course will be taking place in Killarney on the 04th February, being run by Kerry Recreational and Sports. Please contact the secretary soonest as places will be limited and we will have to apply asap. We will have our provisional calendar for the year in next weeks edition.

Bryan Sheehan Nominated To Be The New Kerry Captain COUNTY CHAMPIONS South Kerry have informed the secretary of the Kerry County Committee that Bryan Sheehan is to be their nominee to captain the Kerry Senior Football team in 2016. The St Mary’s clubman, who previously led the Kingdom in 2010, and who made his championship debut against Tipperary back in 2005, has made 60 championship appearances in the green and gold for Kerry scoring a whopping 6 goals and 153 points. The nomination will be ratified at the next meeting of the Kerry County Committee.

all by the end of the first quarter. A penalty by Kerry minor Michael Foley saw Spa lead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the break. Denis Daly with a goal, and a point from Bryan Sheehan, had the sides level on the resumption but with Michael O’Donoghue and Dara Moynihan in fine form, Spa added on the winning points. Spa and John Mitchels will now meet in the final of the promotion playoff this weekend with the winners joining Templenoe and Kenmare in Division 1.

Understrength Kerry go down to Clare in McGrath Cup

A largely experimental Kerry side, that contained none of the All Ireland match day squad, went down to Clare by three points in their opening game of the McGrath Cup before 805 spectators at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Kerry had the better of the first half after which they held a four points lead, but a much improved second half performance from the Bannermen was too much for the home side and the visitors ran Kerry, who have no chance of making the final of the competition will now play Tipperary on Sunday next in Tipperary Town in Round 2 at 2pm. With the opening round of the Allianz Football League against Dublin just over two weeks away, Kerry returned to full training on Tuesday of this week and among those that will be part of the panel for the first two game, away to Dublin and at home to Roscommon, will be the ex Kerry Minor duo of Brian Ó Beaglaoich (An Ghaeltacht) and Tom O’Sullivan of Dingle.

SENIOR TEAM MANAGER Killarney Legion GAA Club are delighted to announce that, following ratification by the club’s executive, the new senior team manager is Kieran Cronin. Kieran, whilst playing for the Kerry Under 21s, suffered a career ending injury which necessitated an extended

spell in hospital. Following recovery he kept up his GAA passion by getting involved in coaching. Having been involved in the background of St Michaels Foilmore’s All Ireland Intermediate success he stepped forward to spend 4 years, 1 as selector and 3 as manager with his native club. In that period they cemented their place in the Top 4 of the County League Division 1 and under his management won back to back South Kerry Championships. Having moved to Cork due to employment he took up the role of coach with the Macroom senior team and spent 2 years in that position. Currently assisting Jack O’Connor preparing the Kerry Under 21s based in Cork. A keen believer in the modern game and methods we are delighted to be

welcoming Kieran as our Senior team manager. His back-room team will be finalised in the very near future. WHERE ARE THEY NOW The club hopes to send off its roaming reporter around the globe again in the near future where he hopes to catch up with s few more Legionnaires who have departed their hometown. This time last year the club caught up with twelve clubmen and found out s little about how life is treating them now and of their memories of their days playing in the green n white. GAA LOTTO: Our next club lotto draw for €5,600 will be on Friday January 15th 2016 in Griffin’s Bar, Castlemaine. Lotto tickets are available from usual sellers and at various outlets in Milltown and Castlemaine. Special thanks to our generous sponsors and also to our many loyal supporters and ticket sellers. FUN FOOTBALL: Marcus, Garry, Mike, Turlough and John along with other club mentors are continuing FUN FOOTBALL in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. A startling report recently released by the WHO remarked about the level of inactivity among children in Ireland, how sedentary children are becoming and how Ireland’s children are going to be the most obese in Europe by 2030. Drop out from sport is huge in the teenage years due to being ‘bad’ at sport. If children realise that they are really good at some sports or at a particular aspect of a sport then they can go ahead and pursue that- be it Basketball Athletics, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, swimming…The list is endless and it is important to remember that all sports will complement each other. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our Face-Book Page. Kerry Senior Team: Well done to our own club player, Cathal Moriarty who lined out with the Kerry senior team on Sunday last, in their clash with Clare in the McGrath Cup.
